Zero Hour (The Numa Files) "Zero Hour" opens with a Prologue that would do Mary Shelley proud. This novel has all the elements of fun fiction: a luchador for a villain, a beautiful physicist, the world on the brink of possible destruction, and Kurt Austin. It's a volatile mix. This is the third time Clive Cussler and Graham Brown have collaborated on a novel from the NUMA Files, and they keep getting better at it. The story is equal parts dialogue and action. I agree with the first two reviewers, it's a great summer read.
Whisky On My Mind Sawyer loves his MC and he loves Whisky. He is caught in a bad place trying to keep the piece. I was completely caught by surprise on the stories twist, floored. Was extremely happy to see a HEA with no cliffhanger.
The War of Immensities A read with pace.No speed bumps or sargasso sea here. We visit all realms on earth.A matrix enveloping and uniting all peoples.Something wrong, a small volcano in far flung New Zealand escalates to a super event which threatens the planet to the core. For the heart of the matter is the core.Something is eating out our planet like a worm in the apple and destiny beckons our return to dust. So who is to save us.Who are these saviours. They are flawed people drawn
from happenstance to utilise reason and hope. Resolution is directed through a maligned scientist who like our climate change scientists is subject to ill will. In short a ripping read.
The Vanishing Tribe This one is good to read although I did not like it as well as many of the other Rogue Angel books. It seemed a little vague to me at times and the topic was not as solid as many of the other stories.
The Troika Three connected, lost souls wander the desert submerged in madness and despair. Did I mention that one of them is a Jeep? This surreal story is at once intensely tragic and hopeful. I highly recommend it.
The Third Secret (The Chapman Files) I loved this series, I had to buy them all at once and read and finished them all in one weekend! (yes i didnt leave home or turn on the TV!) Very enjoyable
The Son I was so captivated by the lives and doings of the McCullough family, the Comanche Indians and the other interconnected families on both sides of the Texas/Mexico border of this story, that for the past few days I've found myself in an altered state of mind, doing little else but reading this novel as fast as I could but not wanting it to end. When I did reach the last page yesterday, THE SON continued to gallop full speed across the plains of my imagination. I have yet to come to a halt and the story continues to insinuate itself intellectually and emotionally into my mind.
The Sunday Arrangement I understand this is the first part of a series. The thing that I liked about it is that there were a number of good, interesting mysteries in the story and I'm sure the resolutions of some of these mysteries will be very entertaining. You get just enough background to really pique your interest! I also like the idea that the woman in this story is a takecharge executive who maintains her independence throughout.
The Secret Lives of Emma: Beginnings Thirty-something Emma Benson is a free spirit. For her a good life means a life of sensuality. So it's a surprise to everyone when she marries David, a successful businessman, and settles down in the suburbs.
The Secret Lives of Emma: Distractions This series has been selling like hotcakes in Australia (the books are set in Mosman, an exclusive harborside suburb of Sydney) but it seems to have flown under the radar in the US. That's a shame, because this is one of the most refreshing series I've read in ages. So if you are open-minded and like books that contain realistic situations (plus some truly erotic sex scenes) you are sure to enjoy The Secret Lives of Emma: Distractions.
The Secret Lives of Emma: Unmasked I really loved this book. The erotic scenes were just as hot as in the previous two books, but there were also some deeper issues dealt with such as whether loving someone means that you are willing to accept them as they are. In this book, there was no more deception - everything was out in the open, and it was a question of whether David's love for Emma could triumph over his conventional morality. Of course, this being Emma, she puts her husband to the ultimate test: will he participate in an orgy on a luxury yacht in the Mediterranean?
The Return of Her Past Housekeeper's daughter Mia Gardiner knew her feelings for multimillionaire Carlos O'Connor were foolish. Until the day she caught the ruthless playboy's eye. Now Mia is older and wiser, but she has never forgotten the feel of his touch. Then, like a whirlwind, Carlos returns.‌
The Prosecution Rests New Stories about Courtrooms, Criminals, and the Law Great drama, great story-telling, great twists, great characters and great dialogue ... all in all, an anthology that is enjoyable from first page to last. I hope that Ms Fairstein will consider putting together a second collection to follow up this winner. Highly recommended.
The Nightingale Sisters To the student nurses at The Nightingale hospital, the ward sisters are heartless and frightening, with impossibly high standards. But the sisters have troubles of their own...
The Midnight Breed Series Companion This is a must for fans of the series. Avid readers may not do well on the trivia portion - I couldn't even remember some of the character's names let alone their backgrounds so didn't spend much time on that. But it was fascinating to look into the author's mind and it demonstrated how much thought and how much creativity went into creating this amazing world of the Breeds and Breedmates. I loved Gideon and Savannah's novella. That alone was worth the purchase.
The Man in the Snow The Man in the Snow by Rory Clements has descriptive copy which is not yet available from the Publisher.
The Lost Recipe for Happiness Barbara O'Neal tells the story of Elena Alvarez's spiritual and emotional recovery with unmistakable authenticity. The colorful details of the Colorado and New Mexico Southwest flavor the book as fully as the recipes she's included, and the food is as much a character as is Elena's dog Alvin - and anyone who regularly reads Barbara's blog knows of her enjoyment of cooking, her passion for her heritage, and her love for her animals. I found myself hungry for tamales and churros and pork pie, and dying to try the pomegranate baklava.
The Lost Ones (Quinn Colson) Atkins has a knack for portraying the culture and characters of the deep South. His descriptive prose, gripping suspense, and implied violence are a pleasure to read. His dialogue continues to be spot-on and believable as are his characters and their motivations. The pacing of this effort was less frenetic that in "The Ranger" with the real action not engaging until well into the last third of the narrative but the suspense and palpable danger kept this reader engaged with the characters throughout. I recommend "The Lost Ones" and Quinn Colson for those readers who
enjoy strong independent men of virtue who are not afraid to do what must be done to ensure a way of life in which they truly believe.
The Light Fantastic: A Novel of Discworld Slapstick, parody, biting satire, word play, and philosophy are all here to enjoy. The plot is neatly tied up at the end, so at this point you can move forward to another book in the wizardry series, or switch to one of the other Discworld tracks. But in either case, there is much more to explore in the wacky and magical world of Terry Pratchett.
The Garden of Happy Endings Elsa opens up her old childhood home in Pueblo, and invites her sister, Tamsin, to live with her when Tamsin becomes homeless. Tamsin's husband has suddenly disappeared and brought scandal and financial ruin to her family. The relationship of the two sisters with such diverse lifestyles begins to grow and mature as each questions her status in life and how to find meaning in the lives they face.
The Knife's Edge: The Ronin Saga Matthew Wolfs writing is enchanting, I found myself lost in his world. Not only were his characters so well developed that I could see them as vividly as my own family (he writes so you feel every death and triumph right along with his characters), but the settings were so well described that I felt like I could see everything the characters could, from beautiful trees to small and cozy cabins. Its the kind of book you read again and again. I look forward to returning to this amazing world in Wolfs next book.
The Hitwoman Gets Lucky (Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman) Maggie trusts her mentor, Patrick Mulligan, so she doesn't think twice when he asks her to help him with a job in Atlantic City. It just so happens that she has tickets to a Barry Manilow concert and was planning to go anyway. So she and her good friend Armani (who is unaware of Mulligan's job) head off to AC with Maggie's lizard along for the ride because he didn't want to stay home alone. It's always a fun time for the reader when Godzilla (or god as he likes to be called) makes an appearance. He finds himself making quite an unexpected appearance during the job. That's all I'll say about that or the rest of the plot. You'll have to read to find out. It's a quick, fun read.
The Fourth Victim (The Chapman Files) This is not only a thriller, it delves into a complicated plot as the reader learns about the Witness Protection Program, cops gone bad, upstanding citizens who are anything. The story is up-to-date and dynamic, and you learn about
characters from previous books as well as the flawed protagonists. Kelly has issues, particularly with being on the victim end of a case, as does the damaged Clay Thatcher. However, these are likable characters who you will cheer all the way to the end.
The First Wife A bigamist ex-husband, an anonymous stalker, a murder inquiry. Magazine editor Jane Hamilton is not having a good month. But with the support of her best friend, Brad Manchester, she's coping—until they become lovers and Brad complicates things even more by proposing marriage.
The Forgetful Tooth Fairy This is a great little tale for the young ones. It is short and it will keep their attention. I also liked the cover, it is very well done. The book content is also very well done. It is organized with a good storyline. I recommend this book to parents with little kids that are looking for a great story.
The Edge of Darkness (Darkness Trinity) Arayda has lost everything but still comes out strong and fierce, however, there are some circumstances that makes her rely on others beyond her capability but don't let that confuse you with her independence. Then Ryland shows up and forces her to reach outside her boundaries and shows her the love and care she has been missing for so long. Only Ryland doesn't realize Arayda is saving him as much as he is saving her, that is until their families get involved and forbid them to be together and are sure to keep them apart no matter the cost.
The Couple who Fooled the World Most women would kill to be on Ferro Calvaresi's arm. The enigmatic Italian is one of the richest men in the world and at the top of his business game. Julia Anderson is not most women. She's as rich as Ferro and twice as hungry.
The Cooked Seed: A Memoir I enjoyed the book but a lot of it was repetitive from Red Azalea which I read and loved. Ms. Min spends a lot of time on some of the same things that were covered in that book and which I feel could have been better edited. These are small criticisms as overall, the book is quite heartrending and educational. To see how Ms. Min triumphs over all her problems and obstacles is a miracle.
The Broken Places (A Quinn Colson Novel) Colson has been Sheriff for a year and, as usual, is dealing with a multitude of problems, both big and small. A turnip thief is loose. Three convicts have broken out of a nearby prison. An infamous killer from that same prison has been pardoned and returned to the area as a preacher. The victim's family is incensed and want something done about him.
The Cinema Girl S.R. Vicente has done it again with this stand-alone book, The Cinema Girl in her The Girls Series. She creates unique situations and has her girls in the stories enjoy creative experiences that will get your blood flowing. Stephanie in this story loves the cinema, which she attends weekly and now is uniquely a part of as she accepts an invitation from a stranger. Oh what fun she has...
The Bling Ring: How a Gang of Fame-Obsessed Teens Ripped Off Hollywood and Shocked the World The only caution I have to give in regards to this book is that Sales spends a fair amount of time referencing sociological studies about fame & going on small tangents comparing mastermind Rachel Lee & Prugo to people like Bonnie & Clyde, using historical evidence to support her thought process. This could be a bit dense for some readers, who might expect more sensationalism from such a tabloid-friendly case. It's worthy information and it certainly helps with context, but it does make the book a bit deeper than the case appears to be from a cursory look.
The Black Country (Scotland Yard's Murder Squad) Finally, a word of caution. Once picked up, The Black Country (Scotland Yard's Murder Squad) is very hard to put down. There are two "interlude" chapters where Grecian gives some backdrop history to two characters. If you plan on getting any sleep the night you start reading the book, take advantage of these interludes and set the book down. You won't be able to stop turning the pages otherwise.
The Baby Blue Rip-Off (A Mallory Mystery) Great short mystery! Finished while waiting at airport, transferring planes, and during flights. Could hardly wait to start reading again, after each break!
The Asylum This terrific Victorian gothic novel start out with 21 year old Georgina Ferrars waking up in a room in an insane asylum in Cornwall. Georgina has no working memory of how she got to this room, and her situation is made all the worse when she finds out that everyone there thinks she is a woman named Lucy Ashton. Indeed every indication is that she is Lucy so why are all her memories of Georgina? And why when she asks the doctor to wire her uncle to verify her identity both he and the maids indicate that Georgina is there with him and never left and that the woman in the asylum is an impostor?
The 19 Dragons The story is paced perfectly. It gets more and more tense and fast-paced as you read it, until you're on the edge of your seat, afraid the world is going to fall apart- literally. The ending is neat and satisfying and fits perfectly with the rest of the story.
Tartarus Enjoyable sequels are always nice to find. Fans will hope for a long series, though I'm not sure how the author can manage that, given the sweeping creativity in his story line.
Take Me I'm Yours (Coffee House Chronicles) Marion Parker is mending a broken heart. When her fiance leaves her at the altar on their wedding day, she picks up the pieces and tries to get on with her life. Not interested in dating, she finds solace in her work at the gym and painting lessons. She vows to bubble-wrap her heart to protect it from ever shattering again.
Student Body - Taking One for the Team I have to start by saying that I can't wait for the next one! This is a great erotic read. I felt like I could feel the frustrations and the satisfaction of Kelly Shaw. She is strong, attractive and takes charge.
Something Wicked In a nutshell, a killer is at work in Deception Bay, Oregon. There's also a cult with dark hidden secrets. Are the two connected? Detective Savannah Dunbar is 8 months pregnant, a surrogate, carrying her sister Kristina's baby when all hell breaks lose and people are being murdered. Savannah was just about to start maternity leave, but this killer has other plans.
Southern Cross the Dog Having lost virtually everything in the fearsome storm—home, family, first love—Robert Chatham embarks on an odyssey that takes him through the deep South, from the desperation of a refugee camp to the fiery and raucous brothel Hotel Beau-Miel and into the Mississippi hinterland, where he joins a crew hired to clear the swamp and build a dam.
Salvage and Demolition Written in spare prose that mimics the noir style, in contrast to Power's usual rich Victoriana, Salvage and Demolition moves deliciously fast, in fact, there is enough here that is toothsome that it could easily have been a full length novel, but works well as a love song to the genres of noir, adventure and time travel. I am a fan of Powers in general and Salvage and Demolition gave me a couple hours of pleasure on a snowy afternoon and I will re-read it some day. The highest praise from this reader.
Scent to Her Grave (Bath & Body Series) Persia Vanderbuilt has come home to Gull Harbor, WA. After living in Seattle for years, having a nasty break-up with her ex, and suffering through a terrible job, Persia decides to pack it up and go home to her Aunt Florence. Florence raised Persia after the death of her mother, and Florence operates a dayspa for women called Venus Envy. This is perfect for Persia, who blends her own intoxicating fragrances, and now she can do it for customers.
Safe Word The ending action was also somewhat confusing...I'm still not sure who did what to who, and not quite understanding why it all happened, but because I also feel that the background story was in fact simply that, background, it was not
as important to me as the "romance" storyline. Overall, even though it was not the "hot" read I anticipated, it was enjoyable, and I would read other titles by this author. However, in the future I would avoid the teasers to ensure that I will be reading pivotal scenes for the first time in the book.
Renegade The entire heaven and hell series is about to end!! Noo.. :( all that's left is an anthology! This book was truly amazing, I felt every emotion that each of the characters in the book felt as my own. This is a truly unique series and what can I say but the fact that Cambria has outdone herself this time. The conclusion though was wonderful it still had a twinge of heartbreak that all the ending books have but I thought the ending was enough to make me a happy camper!!
Nice Weekend for a Murder (A Mallory Mystery) Writer Mallory's mystery weekend turns out to be a bit more of a challenge than he'd expected. He thinks he'll participate in a weekend of fun and mystery games. On the first night, however, Mallory is gazing out the window and sees a brutal murder. He raises the alarm but the body can't be found! The game goes on as planned, with everyone thinking that what Mallory saw was part of the game. Mallory isn't convinced, though, and he soon finds proof that what he saw was real. A blizzard hits and players and guests are trapped in at Mohonk Mountain House. With a killer? It would seem so!
No Cure for Death (A Mallory Mystery) I have just started reading this book and it is going to be very good. This is an excellent author.
My Boyfriend and Other Enemies The moment Tash Sinclair sets eyes on family rival Aiden Moore she knows she's in trouble. His vendetta against her is bad enough, but the fact that she finds Aiden outrageously attractive makes everything a million times worse!
Love-shy Love-Shy is a lively, entertaining and warm-hearted romantic comedy filled with serious secrets, ambitious plans, awkward moments and unexpected friendships - funny and engaging to the very last page.
Monument 14: Sky on Fire I enjoyed the first book so much that when I finished it I immediately bought this book. I could not stop reading it, the only regret is I finished it so fast...
Malled to Death (A Mall Cop Mystery) A cat that tangles shoe laces two injures to fix-up a head of security the can only design unwanted/unneeded uniforms at least one murder........I could go on, but that would spoil the fun.
Little Green: An Easy Rawlins Mystery In sum, this is one Easy outing that you will want to set aside the day for, preferably with a glass of light, crisp and aromatic white wine, with a little snack to nibble on as you weave around sixties Los Angeles with this inner-city sleuth, taking on racist cops, under-handed Flower Children, vengeful, jilted exes, and other colorful characters making up LA's social tapestry.
Love's Price Helen Stewart never understood why as a tiny girl she and her twin sister Harriet were sent away to boarding school and never allowed home for holidays. At age sixteen, they were shocked to discover that they are the illegitimate daughters of the notorious rogue, Charles Sinclair. Cast out by their relatives, they moved to London, and Helen has made a life for herself as a lady’s companion. In her line of employment, she must maintain a stellar reputation, but she’s exhausted by the fussy whims of the debutantes she’s forced to chaperone. She’d give anything to change her fate.
Lily (Song of the River, No. 1) Lily soon finds out that she actually only bought 51%(controlling interest) of the boat. Enter Blake Matthews, he won 49% ownership from a card game with Jean Luc Champney. He plans to turn the boat into a floating casino and Lily wants to run cargo... While Lily and Blake figure out how to work together and make money Jean Luc secretly plans to find a way to get his boat back even if it means breaking Lily's heart. Blake at first can't stand Lily but soon finds
himself wanting to make her happy and his heart slowly falling for her. Will an accident keep them apart forever or help them find true love?
Kiss of Fire The emotions, the history, the characters and everything about the story is well written. The author does a good job of showing the depths of Joclyn and Ryland's history and the characters are well developed. Nothing irritates me more than the "love at first sight" stories that plague bookshelves and this story tugged my heart in all the right places.
Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life JEREMY FINK AND THE MEANING OF LIFE is a wonderful, emotional read. Yes, I cried at the ending, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. This is a book that is about so much more than growing up a book that is about so much more, even, than finding a way to open a birthday present. For Jeremy, those weeks before his thirteenth birthday are about becoming closer to the father he lost too soon, about learning the value of friendship, and about learning that the meaning of life, quite possibly, is something that each and every one of us can find inside ourselves.
Kill Your Darlings (A Mallory Mystery) This is a terrific little mystery novel for hard core mystery fans. The story is set in a mystery writers convention (Bouchercon) and includes a clever blend of real writers and fictional characters. There's lots of inside info and jokes about the mystery writing profession not to mention numerous pop culture references which really make the book fun. Collins throws in a solid whodunit and the whole thing adds up to an enjoyable reading experience. Max Allan Collins is an extremely popular and versatile writer and although this is one of his earlier and lesser efforts, its still a worthwhile book.
Is This Tomorrow The 1950's setting is pitch-perfect. You can practically feel the uneven shaggy carpeting of Eve's house under your toes and taste the warming nutmeg in her pies. And you can smell the animosity that this Norman Rockwell-type community feels for a divorced Jewish mother who dares to date and has to work. Is This Tomorrow is a gem. And (hopefully) a future film.
Intervention I t's been more than thirty years since New York City medical examiner Jack Stapleton's college graduation and almost as long since he'd been in touch with former classmates Shawn Doherty and Kevin Murray. Once a highly regarded ophthalmologist, Jack's career took a dramatic turn after a tragic accident that destroyed his family. But that, too, is very much in the past: Jack has remarried-to longtime colleague and fellow medical examiner Laurie
Montgomery-and is the father of a young child. But his renegade, activist personality can't rest, and after performing a postmortem on a young college student who had recently been treated by a chiropractor, Jack decides to explore alternative medicine. What makes some people step outside the medical establishment to seek care from practitioners of Eastern philosophies and even faith healers?
In Petrakis's Power To safeguard her family's future, Natalie Carr must make a deal with the devil, Ludo Petrakis. She doesn't trust him, but the energy between them leaves her breathless and powerless. So Natalie agrees to his outlandish proposition: travel to Greece as his fiancee!
Impostor: A Variants Novel I liked the storyline, although Tessa seemed to fool people really easily into believing she was Madison. I felt really sorry for Madison's friends and family who believed her to be alive and well, when really she was dead, and I also felt sorry for Tessa who found herself part of a loving family - something that she herself hadn't had for years.
How to Bake a Perfect Life The creation of a book, much like the making of a loaf of bread, requires the careful combination and layering of many aspects plot, structure, characterization, voice. "How To Bake A Perfect Life" takes all those elements and adds a dash of the unknown, a willingness to take a chance by focusing the story on an older heroine. There's a lot going on, but somehow Ms. O'Neal simply makes it work, and the result is one of the best books I've read in ages.
Hot Springs Everyone is flawed and everyone is fascinating in HOT SPRINGS. It is a book that hooks you in from the very first sentence and keeps you hanging on until the very end.
Honor Bound As a middle book, it has a bit of a catch. There are numerous things going on. We get a little more detail on the elves of the setting, a little more detail on the fey of the setting and a little more background of the city and its recent past rulers. These things quickly eat up the space of the book and when the next big reveal comes, its ended and we've got a short wait til the third book.
Honor Among Thieves I was extremely happy to find this latest work of Elaine Cunningham's. I have always enjoyed her work and I am happy to add this to my collection. I am absolutely comfortable with the length of this piece and I agree with her statement on her website of sending out work more often. Bring more to us!
Home Fires (Hope Springs) Colt attempts to come to the rescue with $10k when she needs it for Angels' surgery and Casie does not want to take it... He is also there to lend her farm a horse for the guest that is paying for the next several weeks. and he's there to help heal the horse with a foot problem. More trouble arises when Sophie learns of what a farm closeby does to the mares that are pregnant-for health procedures and she enlists Ty to help rescue some of the horses...
His Most Exquisite Conquest In the boardroom men quake at Michael Finn's business prowess and in the bedroom women beg for his touch. Nothing eludes the Australian tycoon's grasp, except for free spirit Lucy Flippence, his employee's sister who tests his practiced charm.
Hereward The Normans occupied England (not Scotland or Wales) and pretty much dominated it all, Hereward was based in the Isle of Ely and the Fens, an inhospitable area that the Normans struggled to gain control over. The original outlaw he ran a running campaign against the Normans. This book deals with his early years from exile to the start of his campaign against the Normans and it is interesting, page turning stuff.
His Brand of Passion Billionaire Aaron Bryant lives and works on a knife's edge his dark, brooding persona and fearsome reputation hide a shameful family secret. So sassy maid of honor Zoe Parker is an unwelcome distraction when, at his brother's wedding, she hides Aaron's ever-ringing phone down her tight pink dress!
Haunted House The main characters are all survivors of horrific, terrifying, traumatic bloody events and I recognized them immediately...These people needed to go into hiding after signing documents, government cover-ups, suffer with severe PTSD and all have guns beside their beds...At the same time across the world they will all receive a strange knock on their doors between 2:30 Am to 3:15 Am....
Ghost Doll and Jasper What happens when a broken doll is touched by stardust? She becomes a ghost doll, of course! The newly awakened Ghost Doll and her companion Jasper, a mangy black cat, set off in search of a safe place to live. But the city is new and dangerous territory for Ghost Doll (who fell asleep in quieter times). The noise and rush of traffic terrifies her, and as for the new style of toy complete with computer chip and battery she can’t think of anything worse. But there is something far more sinister and dangerous lurking in the city. Someone else witnessed the falling star and is anxious to get a hold of the fragment and Ghost Doll for his own evil purposes. How will Ghost Doll and Jasper escape their hunter and find a home where they both are safe and loved?
Going, Going, Ganache (Cupcake Bakery Mystery) This has been my favorite mystery series, but I wasn't going to post a review until I saw that the other 4-star reviews dinged their star-value for the same reason I've done so here. I don't like to add any negative sounding flak on a good read, and like them I don't want to post spoilers, especially since the main mystery was great and the characters are fun and I have been looking forward to every issue. However, let's just say the "end hook" is not a mystery that will keep me buying a series. I know the editor probably suggested it, they seem to do this with every mystery series anymore, but it truly puts me off, no matter how much I liked the series up until then.
Glossed and Found (Bath & Body Series) When police suspect that Venus Envy's new makeup artist has drowned, Persia Vanderbilt knows there's more to it than meets the eye.
Ghost Knight Along with the relationships that are built within this book, there are also enough twists and turns to keep you reading. The chapters are short and the story moves right along- a feat that will keep a young-reader audience engaged. To her credit, Funke is able to build depth while knowing the hearts of the pre-teen world. She keeps the action moving without getting too deep into relationships, but be mindful, the foundation is being built.
Gears of a Mad God: A Steampunk Lovecraft Adventure Proper young ladies in the 1920s don't get dirty, and they certainly don't get into fights. But Colleen's favorite uncle has died under mysterious circumstances, and she wants answers. When a sinister cult comes after her, she pushes back - hard. Soon she's running for her life, hunted by the cult of Katharis and aided by a secret government agency. It will take all of her courage, all of her strength, and every steam-powered weapon she can devise to keep her alive long enough to unravel the mystery of her uncle's death. The cult thinks she knows her uncle's secrets. They'll do anything, hurt anyone, to make her talk. But they've made a grave mistake. Colleen is going to take the fight to them, again and again, until the people she cares about are safe - or have been avenged
Further Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman If the animals weren't enough, she now has three romantic interests. None of them are quite right for her. One is a cop who appears to have some excess baggage one is man who's already married twice and one is an old crush from school she thought was gay. Watching her balance relationships and worrying about her feelings for all three is fun. She's not sure what she wants or who with they all have their attractions. Thank goodness one of them is an expert killer and can offer her advice on how to take out her assigned hit.
A Tale of Time City All in all, there's enough adventure to keep a reader turning pages at blinding speed until the end. On the lighter side, of course, there are also butter-pies (if only they existed!) and Jonathan's father, Sempitern Walker, who is dry, boring, and runs around screaming in his underwear for a half hour before every major ceremony. What can I say? This book is delightful. It deserves all the recognition it can get.
A Shroud for Aquarius (A Mallory Mystery) This was the first Mallory Mystery I had read. I was pleasantly surprised with the writing. It was an enjoyable read so I will be reading more in the series.
A Spoonful of Murder (A Soup Lover's Mystery) Coming back to Snowflake and keeping her parent's business operational was top of mind until a dead boy is found in the back alley. When her chef is arrested, believing in his innocence and trying to keep her business afloat, Lucky seeks clues to find the real killer. I like this book. The writing was comfortable as was the tone of this endearing drama. The mystery was good and every time I thought I knew the identity of the killer, the author changed directions
and caught me by surprise when the killer was revealed. Lucky is a great character who is surrounded by a wonderful supporting cast which includes her grandfather Jack, a friendly doctor and patrons who dine at her soup shop. This is a terrific read and I hope we get to see more of Lucky and her friends for a long time in this charmingly enjoyable debut with a bonus of delectable recipes.
A Hideous Beauty (Kingdom Wars Series #1) Cavanaugh keeps the reader on the edge of their seat in the fast-paced thriller. Snappy, sarcastic dialogue seems to be the forte of his hero, Grant Austin, and it works for him. Dazzling imagery plus unexpected twists complete this great novel. Recommended!
A Chain of Thunder: A Novel of the Siege of Vicksburg Fans of military fiction should read this, for we learn of Grant's brilliant campaign in Mississippi. Students of the Civil War should read this to better understand that there was more to the war that what happened in the east. Fans of good fiction should read it for its gripping story. That's what Shaara focuses on. Though he writes true history, his purpose is to draw out the human drama.
Breaking Josephine At 22, Josephine Sinclair thought she'd finally closed the door on her past and gotten on with her life. With a stable job as a waitress, a nice apartment in town, and scenic Cannon Beach a two-mile jog to the west, she had everything she needed.
Block 24 Natalie Clarke might be spiteful at best and vicious at worst, but was that reason enough for Phillip Gise to leave her lonely and diseased? Fortunately, she has a set of devious plans that just might keep her busy enough to forget her present situation.
Bowled Over There's also a bit of romance in this story but unfortunately Jaymie's romantic path is a bit cloudy. Her sister Becca's path is pretty clear yet again. Jaymie has given herself a six month deadline to decide how she feels about the men in her life. The next book should be very interesting!
Bone and Jewel Creatures In Bone and Jewel Creatures, a beautiful new novella by Elizabeth Bear, Bijou the Artificer creates her own servants and companions by animating bones. When her former apprentice, Brazen the Enchanter, brings her a feral, mute child, she is presented with the challenge of fixing its misshapen arm... which is also infected by a mysterious disease that soon turns out be the first sign of a sorcerous plague.
Big Teeth: A Steampunk Fairy Tale Truly enjoyed the retelling of this classic fairy tale. Many authors, when they try to rework a story, simply re-skin it, adding bits and pieces and changing names. Instead, this story has been rebuilt entirely from the ground up and set in a clockwork world of science and alchemy.
Behind the Bookcase I do have two quibbles with the story the first is that Sarah feels like a vehicle for the events more than a person sometimes. Once you are in a reading groove, though, that issues doesn't matter as much. My second quibble is that some of the text feels too explanatory. Especially when discussing how Sarah feels, there are paragraphs that feel like they could have been done in half the words. Both of these are personal opinions, though, and don't detract too much from the story. All in all, this is a fun adventure story with nice, spooky atmosphere. Not everyone will like it, but it has so many great scenes and well-timed chills that many kids will love it.
Being Me (Inside Out Trilogy) Sara McMillan is still searching for Rebecca, the mysterious woman whose dark, erotic journal entries both enthralled and frightened her. Tormented by a strong desire to indulge the demands of her new boss while also drawn deeper into her passionate bond with the troubled artist, Chris Merit, Sara must face a past as deeply haunting as Rebecca’s written words. In one man’s arms, Sara will find the safe haven to reveal her most intimate secrets and explore her darkest fantasies. But is safety just an illusion, when the truth about Rebecca has yet to be discovered?
Antiagon Fire (Imager Portfolio)
Antiagon Fire succeeds on a number of levels. Quaeryt remains a self-sacrificing hero, but his willingness to make hard choices in order to have a future that matters is pretty cool. The compelling sense of a mission not complete permeates the book. Quaerty will not give in to small challenges, but he keeps going in spite of risks. It makes for interesting introspection.
Altai When a fire breaks out in the Arsenal of Venice in 1569, everyone suspects Joseph Nasi, number-one enemy of the republic. But it is the enigmatic Emmanuele De Zante, spy catcher and agent of the Venetian secret service, who finds himself in jail accused of treason, having been betrayed by his lover.
An Apple a Day: A Memoir of Love and Recovery from Anorexia Wonderfully hopeful and honest on the path of recovery from anorexia. I have suffered for as long as I can remember, and I could relate to many sections. It can be triggering from my perspective, but not as bad as other books I have read. I like ending the book hopeful.
Amity & Sorrow As in life, there are many shades of grey within Amity and Sorrow that prevent a reader from feeling unequivocal sympathy towards any of the characters. Similarly, a reader will struggle with understanding and accepting the sense of camaraderie that occurred in Amaranth's polygamous environment and with utter revulsion at what is later revealed. As one can imagine, such conflicts of feeling make the novel a dark reading experience, one in which not just the main characters will leave the story with scars. Yet, the chance to dive deeper into a polygamous culture makes it utterly fascinating. Fans of any of the current television shows about polygamous relationships should not pass up the chance for yet another viewpoint on this interesting and titillating lifestyle.
Afterglow Just as the word Afterglow has many definitions (and all of them fit this story), this book has a lot of levels. It is a little bit fantasy, a little bit science, a little bit romance and a whole lot of story. Building on the story line started in the first Brotherhood of the Blade book, this book takes the characters deeper. There are vampires, werewolves, and humans all working to bring down Vlad the Impaler from the Swiss Alps to Transylvania. You will enjoy the trip
Affairs of the Dead
The book itself is really well paced, which I love. Of course like all books there is a few moments here and there where the story does slow down, however the book keeps a good pace. The best thing about a well paced book is that feeling that you can't put the book down, and I definitely got that feeling from reading this book.
Finned: The Merworld Water Wars (Volume 1) This book was very entertaining. Had me hooked from the very beginning. Well rounded book with mystery, action, love story, and comedy.
Fire Caste With regards to the plot, there is a rather interesting mix between past and present, with flashbacks giving the reader glimpses into the past of the 19th Arkan Confederates, but also glimpses into Iverson's past. I will not say more about the plot which is full of intrigues and plots and may perhaps feel a bit over-complicated at times. I found the last part of the story, in particular, a bit rushed and not entirely convincing, but then maybe I did not "get it"...
Finding Claire Fletcher Finding Claire Fletcher contains so many secrets it is hard to review with no spoilers, so I will part ways with the story here and say this. You open this book expecting suspense, you close it with a whole new look on life. No more will you pass by the abducted child posters and not look at them with interest, no more will you see a young girl on the street and not wonder where is her mother and does anyone care about her and no more will you ever think "not my child." Claire Fletcher is every child and Lisa Regan has told her story with respect and dignity. I can't name one seasoned author who could have told this story with as much precision, emotion and well thought out story line or pulled it off as gracefully as Ms. Regan. If you love suspense this book is a must read, but more importantly if you love children this book is a must read. Kudos on a well told story Ms. Regan, I'll be back for more.
Dead, White, and Blue (Death on Demand Bookstore) I love the Darlings and I always enjoy trying to solve the mystery alongside them. I also dearly love Broward's Rock and the Death on Demand bookstore. The secondary characters that appear in each book have endeared themselves to me over time, and I always look forward to taking another adventure with them. If you haven't picked up this series yet, be sure to begin with Death on Demand. Like a glass of fine wine, these books have only gotten better with age, and I can't wait to see what Carolyn Hart has in store for us next.
Driving the Saudis: A Chauffeur's Tale of the World's Richest Princesses (plus their servants, nannies, and one royal hairdresser) Larson found that extreme wealth kept pesky rules about speed limits and indentured servitude from affecting the Saudis. At the end of the exhausting assignment, she also discovered that even as an American, she was affected by their medieval beliefs about the status of women. And that she, to her surprise, and like most of us at some time in our lives, was not above trading dignity for the promise of money.
Demon Dark (Rae Wilder #3) Rae’s fragile emotions are becoming unhinged. Lochlann demands she keeps the bond with his brother secret, and the duties of High Priestess threaten to crush her rebellious nature, diminishing her glow. Breandan is her warrior, her light in the dark, but even he cannot hope to protect Rae from her own blood, and the extremes his need to possess her push him to. At odds with his kin, struggling with his own purpose, he fights for his claim on Rae to be honored. The he-witch gathers power, and the land is disquieted. Cael’s evil taints everything he touches, and the sky burns red, a herald of his war. But something about him draws Rae, compels her to seek him out. Rae must break the irons of doom to embrace her fate. She must become the Priestess demonkind cry out for, and wield magics that are hers by birthright. Or watch from the arms of her love as the world perishes in flames.
Darkness Before Dawn I feel like Claire Contreras is an author who doesn't receive the attention that she should. She definitely knows what readers want and knows how to deliver it. Both books flowed beautiful with a compelling storyline. The Darkness books is a series that should not be passed by. It should be read and devoured- with love.
Criminal The first half of the novel was the whole Nikki being obsessive over Dee, but when she got busted for the crime, and you see the reality of being tangled up with the wrong people and how your life could be wasted for this tiny mistake, that is when I started flipping the pages like a madwoman, trying to find out what will happened to Nikki, Dee, and the relationship between Nikki, Bird, and even Nikki's mother. The whole trial and court dealings were something I was very interested in and in the end I did enjoy the novel overall. I think the second half redeemed the novel for me and I was glad I stuck through with it to the end. If you are looking for a glaringly honest and realistic story of a girl ending up being an accessory to crime and how that changed her whole life, you should definitely pick Criminal up.
Crime Beat: A Decade of Covering Cops and Killers Before Michael Connelly became a novelist, he was a crime reporter, covering the detectives who worked the homicide beat. In these vivid, hard-hitting pieces, Connelly leads the reader past the yellow police tape as he follows the investigators, the victims, their families and friends and of, course, the killers to tell the real stories of murder and its aftermath.
Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight To dismiss this book as an apologia for narcissism or self-absorption is to miss two of the key points of sociopathy: extreme self-focus and the power-over-others motivation driving most of the author's human relationships. Both dynamics give rise to the use of people as means to the sociopath's ends. Thomas writes of all these with the expected dispassion of someone trained as a lawyer, yet with enough detail to keep the reading fascinating.
Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman You'll laugh, laugh, laugh your head off as you follow Maggie on her mission of making a little cash to pay the bills. Throw in the talking lizard, the sexy cop, the up and down suspenseful twists, and you've got yourself one heck of a 5 Book worthy novel. I can seriously see this turning into a series....hint hint, Ms. Lynn! Maggie Lee would definitely make an awesome person to make come back in other novels.
Casper the Commuting Cat: The True Story of the Cat Who Rode the Bus and Stole Our Hearts As a cat lover and prolific reader of cat lit, I have to say how much I enjoyed reading about Casper's adventures. Having owned numerous cats who often went off on their own adventures, leaving me worried about where they had
got to, I really identified with this story! This is one of my favourite cat books of all time, along with the fantastic 'Serendipity's Secret' where the heroine goes on a journey of self-discovery rather than Casper's physical one!
Changing Lanes An amazing book about life, love, heartache, moving on, and living. This book opened my eyes to truly living again. I am definitely one to live in the past and stick to memories and heartache. Changing Lanes showed me what living was, in a novel..of course. Needless to say it's worth the read and tears and it's definitely a page turner.
A Hidden Enemy Survivors is an amazing book series! I like the cliff hanger ending, and all the description in the story. I recommend you read it!
A Fresh Start I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. The story was well developed and both of the pasts of the hero/heroine were exposed early on so that the reader is not always wondering. There was a sweet romance (clean and totally PG rated), but the book doesn't totally revolve around the romance. I was expecting the romance to be more dominant, but it was excellent the way that it became secondary to the overall plot line. The heroine was a strong person who stood up for what is right no matter the cost. I would gladly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a sweet romance and suspense-filled novel.
A Blush With Death (Bath and Body Mysteries) This was a great sequel! I enjoy both the strong character of Persia and her relationship with her aunt (although the nickname "Imp" seemed a bit out of character for Persia and slightly annoyed me). The mystery was good and the characters likable. There is a bit of a new romance for Persia...and I was surprised to see a bit of a rebellious side to her. Sporting a fairy tattoo and body piercings, she is not your everyday cozy character. However, she is smart, tough, and loyal to the end...which is a great formula for any good cozy detective.
War in the Age of Intelligent Machines 1991 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 0942299752 , 0942299760 | PDF | 28 MB In the aftermath of the methodical destruction of Iraq during the Persian Gulf War, the power and efficiency of new computerized we apons and surveillance technology have become chillingly apparent. For Manuel DeLanda, however, this new weaponry has a significance that goes far beyond military applications; he shows how it represents a profound historical shift in the relation of human beings both to machines and to information. The recent emergence of intelligent and autonomous bombs and missiles equipped with artificial perception and decision-making capabilities is, for Delanda, part of a much larger transfer of cognitive structures from humans to machines in the late twentieth century.

The Savior Generals: How Five Great Commanders Saved Wars That Were Lost - From Ancient Greece to Iraq 2013 | ISBN-10: 160819163X | EPUB, MOBI | 320 pages | 3,9 MB Leading military historian Victor Davis Hanson returns to non-fiction in The Savior Generals, a set of brilliantly executed pocket biographies of five generals who single-handedly saved their nations from defeat in war. War is rarely a predictable enterprise--it is a mess of luck, chance, and incalculable variables. Today's sure winner can easily become tomorrow's doomed loser. Sudden, sharp changes in fortune can reverse the course of war. These intractable circumstances are sometimes mastered by leaders of genius--asked at the eleventh hour to save a hopeless conflict, created by others, often unpopular with politics and the public. These savior generals often come from outside the established power structure, employ radical strategies, and flame out quickly. Their careers often end in controversy. But their dramatic feats of leadership are vital slices of history--not merely as stirring military narrative, but as lessons on the dynamic nature of consensus, leadership, and destiny.

Official Truth, 101 Proof: The Inside Story of Pantera 2013 | ISBN-10: 0306821370 | EPUB, MOBI | 304 pages | 3,7 MB Few heavy metal acts survived the turmoil of the early 1990s music scene. Pantera was different. Instead of humoring the market, the band instead demanded that the audience come to them by releasing a series of fiercely uncompromising, platinum albums, including Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven—two #1 albums that, like Metallica’s And Justice for All, sold millions of copies despite minimal airplay. Rex Brown’s memoir is the definitive account of life inside one of rock’s biggest bands, which succeeded against all odds but ultimately ended in tragedy when iconic lead guitarist Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott was murdered midperformance by a deranged fan. This is a lucid account of the previously untold story behind one of the most influential bands in heavy metal history, written by the man best qualified to tell the truth about those incredible and often difficult years of fame and excess.
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves 2013 | ISBN-10: 0399162097 | EPUB, MOBI | 320 pages | 3 MB From the New York Times–bestselling author of The Jane Austen Book Club, the story of an American family, middle class in middle America, ordinary in every way but one. But that exception is the beating heart of this extraordinary novel. Meet the Cooke family: Mother and Dad, brother Lowell, sister Fern, and our narrator, Rosemary, who begins her story in the middle. She has her reasons. “I spent the first eighteen years of my life defined by this one fact: that I was raised with a chimpanzee,” she tells us. “It’s never going to be the first thing I share with someone. I tell you Fern was a chimp and already you aren’t thinking of her as my sister. But until Fern’s expulsion, I’d scarcely known a moment alone. She was my twin, my funhouse mirror, my whirlwind other half, and I loved her as a sister.” Rosemary was not yet six when Fern was removed. Over the years, she’s managed to block a lot of memories. She’s smart, vulnerable, innocent, and culpable. With some guile, she guides us through the darkness, penetrating secrets and unearthing memories, leading us deeper into the mystery she has dangled before us from the start. Stripping off the protective masks that have hidden truths too painful to acknowledge, in the end, “Rosemary” truly is for remembrance.
Paris to the Pyrenees: A Skeptic Pilgrim Walks the Way of Saint James ISBN: 1605984329 | 2013 | EPUB | 352 pages | 3 MB Part adventure story, part cultural history the author of Paris, Paris: Journey into the City of Light explores the phenomenon of pilgrimage along the age-old Way of Saint James in France Driven by curiosity, wanderlust, and health crises David Downie and his wife set out from Paris to walk across France to the Pyrenees. Starting on the Rue Saint-Jacques then trekking 750 miles south to Roncesvalles, Spain, their eccentric route takes 72 days on Roman roads and pilgrimage paths—a 1,100-year-old network of trails leading to the sanctuary of Saint James the Greater. It is best known as El Camino de Santiago de Compostela—“The Way” for short. The object of any pilgrimage is an inward journey manifested in a long, reflective walk. For Downie, the inward journey met the outer one: a combination of self-discovery and physical regeneration. More than 200,000 pilgrims take the highly commercialized Spanish route annually, but few cross France. Downie had a goal: to go from Paris to the Pyrenees on age-old trails, making the pilgrimage in his own maverick way. 32 pages of color photographs by Alison Harris. 32 pages of color photographs
