Tuf Voyaging This is SciFi at it's best, very character oriented with enough strange planets, strange beings, strange traditions, and technology to satisfy the hungriest of SciFi palates. Even more enjoyable if you are a cat lover like myself. Get out and buy this book now! Enjoy!

To Brie or Not To Brie (Cheese Shop Mystery) What a wonderfully-crafted story that I could not put down. With all the elements that I love in a good mystery: intriguing plot twists, suspicious suspects, a mix and humor and romance and great characters, this was a very enjoyable read that quickly became a page-turner as I had to know what happens next. I had to laugh at Rebecca, who in her quest to help Charlotte solve this murder mystery, was relentlessly asking questions of the police, by mimicking what she saw on the TV crime shows. Reading this book is like coming home again and I can't wait for my next visit with Charlotte and her friends in this fabulous series oozing with delectable flavor.

What the Spell (Life's a Witch) WHAT THE SPELL is a fun, charming, bittersweet and utterly delightful story of magic, mean girls and boys, actions and consequences, and the price one girl is willing to pay to fit in. A quick and engaging read, with just a touch of the

paranormal to differentiate itself from its contemporary peers, this story will hold readers captive as they follow Brooklyn Sparks as she treads the line between right and wrong in her attempt to shed her cloak of invisibility and find out just who she really is.

Written In Red: A Novel of the Others There are a lot of characters and a few different stories taking place, but you never feel overwhelmed and they are woven together beautifully. The result is a book I didn't want to put down for things like sleep and work.

Blood Oranges (A Siobhan Quinn Novel) It seems that the purveyors and readers of run-of-the-mill urban fantasy and ParaRom weren't paying attention in Honor's English during the discussion of SATIRE. Caitlin R. Kiernan writing here as Kathleen Tierney has done so to make a delineation between her more serious oeuvre. Our anti-heroine Siobhan Quinn shows the World its ugliness as an addict, a survivor of child abuse and neglect, and as an outsider. If you want an interesting and sly take on the whole monster slayer trope check out this gritty confection.

The Geek Girl and the Scandalous Earl Jamie falls through a mirror and into a room. And let's just say that shorts and a top is not exactly what a proper young lady would be wearing. She and Micah are like dogs and cats. She says her meaning, swears, he is a true gentleman and does not know what to make of this..person. Talk about a when cultures clash. They are also meant to be, but she is nobody, he is an earl. She is staying at his place (an unmarried woman!). Scandalous.

This is Not a Game The book in some sense does not break new ground, but it does tell a good story well. The netbots, for example, could be the programs that currently do automated trading. We have seen in real life how it is sometimes necessary to thwart them to prevent major financial damage. Those are fairly simple codes. The kind let loose here are not so controllable.

The Virtuous Ward What I love about Karla Darcy's Sweet Deception Regencies is the snarky humor! Such fun! I keep picturing Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey (just adore that character, don't you?) and find myself laughing out loud sometimes. The

wit and dialogue fairly sparkle. I didn't think the relationship between Amity and her guardian would be as good as it is, so that was a pleasant surprise. If you haven't read the entire Sweet Deception Regency series by Karla Darcy, you're in for a real treat! Start now!

The Sound of Rebellion It was the shortest episode so far, but for me it was also the most engaging episode. With only five episodes left I worry that there might not be enough time to resolve everything, but Scalzi has a proven track record of awesome and I suspect those so called "filler" stories will turn out to be far more important than people thought.

The Skybound Sea If you're an avid reader, you know that there is a time in your life when you read one of THOSE books. The books that make you call in sick to work with a family emergency (the protagonist could DIE), lock yourself in a room to escape any family distractions, forget to eat anything beyond easily accessible finger foods because putting down the book would be unthinkable, and sometimes, affecting your speech for the next week and creating chaos in all your conversations. Yes, you've been there, and I must warn you, The Skybound Sea is one of THOSE books.

The Half Life of Stars I saw this book in Barnes & Noble and it looked like it could be good, so I read it. It's an ok story, not that great but I've read worse. What really annoyed me were the misspellings which abounded, not to mention a few misued apostrophes. For example: Majitos (mojitos), tikkii hut (tiki hut), chilly (chili) and the plural of "it" spelled "it's". Oh, and Salma Hayek is referred to as "Selma Hayek". If I could have gotten past all the grammatical errors I probably would have given it 4 stars.

The Fourth Wall The protagonist of the Forth Wall is a former child star who is doing an almost passable job at returning his career from the land of third world syndication. Parts of the book are about him dealing with his drinking and substance issues (This is not done in a heavy handed way). Some of the book is about him dealing with the way his parents exploited him as a kid. Most of the book covers people around him being murdered and his attempting to make sure he is not next.

Shifting Dreams: A Cambio Springs Mystery

Throw in a lot of unemployed people needing jobs and the murder ties in with the possibility of a new hotel resort being built which would benefit the town and you have all the necessary elements for a good murder mystery then add it the romance and the paranormal aspect and it all melds together perfectly.

The Demonologist The literal demon and metaphorical demon converge within the Demonologist in a haunting, truly scary story. I read the first part of it late at night and when I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore, I stopped reading. But couldn't sleep because I was so disturbed by what I had read. And the next morning, even though I had terrible, uneasy sleep, I had to pick it up again to finish reading and was yelling at the book, "Don't go down the cellar. Please don't go down there. I don't want to know what's waiting for you!!!" But he did go down the cellar and it did freak me out.

Slashback: A Cal Leandros Novel This is a wonderful new addition to the series. I love the alternating points of view in the past/present, you learn a lot about the brothers and little Cal is hilarious. Lots of action, humour, some interesting backstory and a very creepy bad guy. If you're a fan of the Leandros brothers this book can't be missed.

The Different Girl I enjoyed this story a lot. I like how it didn't tell you everything and you learned the reasons and some of the truths at the same time as the 4 main characters the girls. The young women were bonded to each other for what they were and because of circumstance. I loved the new girl who arrived on the scene rather evil at times to discover she really had a heart.

The Book of Killowen What sort of book is worth a man’s life? After a year away from working in the field, archaeologist Cormac Maguire and pathologist Nora Gavin are back in the bogs, investigating a ninth-century body found buried in the trunk of a car. They discover that the ancient corpse is not alone pinned beneath it is the body of Benedict Kavanagh, missing for mere months and familiar to television viewers as a philosopher who enjoyed destroying his opponents in debate. Both men were viciously murdered, but centuries apart so how did they end up buried together in the bog?

Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, Book 1) One of the best parts about Rosemary and Rue is the fact that while it is one step into the world of the Fey, changelings, pixies, trolls, and goblins, there is still a true sense of reality. Having once lived in the San Francisco Bay

Area, where the story is set, I can imagine the world of Oberon's court just beyond visible sight. The places are real. The emotions are real. The pain, loss, and infrequent joys are real. So real that sometimes this is a hard book to read. Fortunately, it is a harder book to put down.

One Salt Sea: An October Daye Novel This series got off to a bit of an awkward start for me. The first book had problems but also promise. I'm so glad I stuck with it though. So much happens in this book, wow. A bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I'm not one for long reviews but I loved LOVED getting to know Luidwaeg better and loved seeing Toby's character grow and mature more. Finally we get some closure on her relationship with her daughter Gillian and there's definitely some romance. Over all, great book and a wonderful read.

Forsaken Dreams (Escape to Paradise) This book is the first in an unforgettable series. I couldn't put it down. The book is set when north and south were at war, Eliza has had a tough life and after losing her husband she sets off to forget her old life and she joined a group aboard the New Hope. Whose mission was to start over in Brazil. Along the way she never expected what was to come about.

Monsoon Season When her boyfriend Ben hits her, she doesn't know what to call it. She does know to pack her things and run to the one place that feels safe home. Riley discovers she's pregnant and her emotions become tangled. She can't shake the fact that she's still in love with Ben..

Me & Emma I can't say much more for fear of ruining the story. Suffice to say you will be mesmerized by the poignancy of this story, your heart will absolutely break for their suffering, and you will be torn between rooting for a happy ending and just wishing the pain would stop at whatever the cost. There were chapters that left me shaking in sobs, I was so in pieces over the graphic abuse. And reading it from a child's perspective is what made it all the more heart wrenching.

Late Eclipses (October Daye, Book 4)

I like this series a lot. I follow a lot of series, but this one is one of the ones that I look forward to reading the most. Yes, there are some holes in the plots sometimes, and things can be a little obvious to the reader, while October still hasn't caught on, but these books are very creative and entertaining. I also like how they don't have sex scene after sex scene like some other fantasy books with strong women as the main characters, and I just love books about faeries. I'm not going to sum up the story, since other reviewers have done that already, but I do definitely recommend this book.

Kristmas Collins All Kris Collins wants for Christmas is to survive. With everyone from a ruthless assassin to the FBI, and even his exfather-in-law after him, it almost makes him long to return to the safety of prison, where he'd spent the last three years.

Into the Dark Emilie Davis has accumulated more than her share of emotional scar tissue in her thirty-four years of living but she has found a fragile balance in her life. That balance is abruptly shattered when she becomes the focus of a psychopath's obsession. Enter Nathan Madigan, SWAT team member and hostage negotiator, and the sparks begin to fly in more ways than one.

Damascus Countdown I couldn't put this book down. The suspense, action is non-stop. Rosenberg captures your imagination of just one possible end time scenario. A lot of scripture is used throughout this novel. I look forward to more books by Rosenberg.

Forest of the Forsaken: An Adult Re-Telling of Grimm's Hansel and Gretel This was a great interpretation of modern day Hansel and Gretel! The fictitious characters were ideal in this story and the descriptive nature is part of why I enjoyed reading this book. I was not wanting the book to be over when I reached the last page, the book does not have any slow moments and you become invested in the two main characters you want even more to happen! Definitely enjoyed this one but would only suggest more background story and maybe more buildup to the climax it happens too soon but that also makes for a nice surprise.

Feral Nights When sexy, free-spirited werecat Yoshi tracks his sister, Ruby, to Austin, he discovers that she is not only MIA, but also the key suspect in a murder investigation. Meanwhile, werepossum Clyde and human Aimee have set out to do a little detective work of their own, sworn to avenge the brutal killing of werearmadillo pal Travis. When all three seekers are snared in an underground kidnapping ring, they end up on a remote island inhabited by an unusual (even by shifter standards) species and its cult of worshippers.

Deep State I am not one who especially likes series with a recurring hero/heroine, but Dagmar Shaw is pleasantly believable: flawed without being overwrought and angst-ridden, capable without being a Mary Sue, concerned about the ethics of her job without getting preachy. Williams also does a nice job of sketching out the various locations in which the narrative occurs, providing enough detail to help the mind's eye without getting bogged down in florid detail.

Deadly Offer (A Darby Farr Mystery) Another great installment in Doudera's series with smart real-estate agent Darby Farr. This one takes place in the wine country of my home state and despite Vicki being a Mainer, she does a superb job of evoking the light and landscape of the wine valleys north of San Francisco. Clever plot, believable villains, great twist at the end. She pulls off changing narrator point of view, including a realistic teenage girl voice. Intrigue in the vineyards will keep you glued to the page.

Tome of the Undergates (The Aeons' Gate, Book 1) The debut novel from an extraordinarily talented twenty-five-year-old author. Fantasy's next global star has arrived. Lenk can barely keep control of his mismatched adventurer band at the best of times (Gariath the dragon man sees humans as little more than prey, Kataria the Shict despises most humans, and the humans in the band are little better). When they're not insulting each other's religions they're arguing about pay and conditions. So when the ship they are travelling on is attacked by pirates things don't go very well.

Undead and Underwater Betsy, queen of the undead, and Fred, the dour could’ve-been-a-princess mermaid, reluctantly team up to help a mutual friend in trouble. After all, a friend in need is a friend who, well, can really test your patience because Betsy and Fred aren’t exactly BFFs. What they do have in common is the source of the problem: a man. And what’s more troubling than love?

Untouched Bound by duty to her Highland clan, Tessa Brodie must do the unthinkable she must cast aside her dreams of love and marry Angus Grant, a man old enough to be her grandsire to secure a war-time alliance.

Yes Chef, No Chef Can kneading bread dough be erotic when your man is behind you nibbling at your ear? And is it always bad manners to refuse an invite into your hunky neighbours greenhouse to examine his glorious courgettes?

Band of Sisters Fans of Cathy Gohlke's Promise Me This will find they will love this book just as much even though its very different. It still has Cathy's excellent story telling, historical accuracy and a page turning book you can't put down. What is doesn't have is the romance story but it has a powerful story that will stay with long after you turn the last page.

Assignment in Brittany I am a fan of Helen MacInnes novels. They read like travelogues and she draws interesting characters with tightly woven plots. This one deals with the period between the fall of France and the Battle of Britain. The major character is an English agent who is parachuted into France to impersonate a French POW who is his double. He studies the man's life history and the plan is to carry the impersonation on long enough to conduct surveillance of German preparations for invasion. The location is Brittany and the story is well done.

Ashes of Honor: An October Daye Novel Ashes of Honor was the big payoff for those of us following this series. I won't regurgitate the plot. Needless to say, Toby has another seemingly impossible task on her plate to complete. As usual her task is filled with danger at almost every turn. But the difference this time is while the task is still dangerous, Toby has changed.

An Artificial Night (October Daye, Book 3) AN ARTIFICIAL NIGHT has the most interesting storyline so far in the October Daye series. Instead of playing the role of a failed detective, we watch Toby's attempts at being a hero. And let me just say that I enjoyed this approach much more than the detective route, simply because there was more action and adventure as opposed to idly standing around, clueless.

All Souls' Rising: A Novel of Haiti This story of the Haitian revolution is violent and disturbing, but its violence is handled with care and placed in the context of each character's psychology and motivations. The characters are believable, the history seems painstakingly accurate, and the sensory descriptions are rich and vivid. The book leaves you with new, unresolved questions about what race is a topic which obsesses many of the characters in the book as well. An unforgettable read and an important one.

All that Follows This is a modest, engaging story, with a protagonist who is not that common - a nice guy who is not very adventurous. I enjoyed how his wife's attitude evolved, as she reconnected with his good qualities and their importance. The various characters were all well done. The one negative: Leonard is often alone and when this happens, the novel sometimes bogs down.

All Men of Genius Overall this was a spectacular read. The book is exquisitely written with beautiful descriptions and witty dialogue that really make the story come alive this makes this book a slow read but a wonderful one. The characters are absolutely wonderful I was especially drawn to Violet and her desire to make it as a technically adept woman in a male dominated field. The intertwining love stories remind of The Importance of Being Earnest or even some of Jane Austen's works. Those who love that type of Victorian style of writing should check this out. Fans of steampunk stories should check this out as well, there are a ton of wonderful devices in this book.

All Kinds of Magic: One Man's Search for Meaning Across the Modern World This is the story of a man who embarked on a quest that many of us have dreamed about. Disillusioned by a world hooked on material wealth and scientific fact, he decided to travel across the globe in search of something more meaningful: the magical, the mystical. His journey takes him from snow-blanketed villages in the Himalayas to tiny, covert communities of whirling dervishes in rural Turkey from the world's largest religious festival on the banks of the swollen Ganges to a dappled, ancient Sufi quarter in Delhi. Lyrical and clear-sighted, "All Kinds of Magic" is a fascinating exploration of the hidden world of miracles that is at once deeply personal and universal in its scope.

All He Saw Was the Girl This is a really fast paced, engrossing story. It starts out in Rome with a stolen taxi cab and then cuts to Detroit and a mob enforcer. I loved the back and forth between the two cities. Just as I was totally into the story in Rome it jumped

to Detroit. But since both story lines are so well done I was never upset to leave one to see what was happening with the other. This is the 3rd novel by Peter Leonard and I think he just keeps getting better and better. I highly recommend this book.

Airborn I think it is correct to compare this book to the works of Robert Louis Stevenson the author does an excellent job of creating an entirely new world, where airships cruise the skies and airplanes were never invented, where men wear top hats and women wear hats with feathers and flowers. I enjoyed the radical setting, the characters, and the plot which became quite gripping all the way to the end. So, if you are interested in an exciting read, one that harkens back to a different day and age, then this book is for you!

Agincourt Cornwell's books are populated with stout, resolute heroes, noble enemies and the treacherous plots of evil men. AGINCOURT is no exception the differences are largely in the areas of weapons technology, strategy and the intricate details of late medieval life. Its principal hero, longbowman Nicholas Hook, differs from most Cornwell protagonists in his religious faith (notwithstanding that it's hard to be a good Christian when your job description involves stabbing people in the eye).

Agents of Innocence The author draws heavily from his experience covering the growth of terrorism in Lebanon for the Washington Post. To an extent, the book is a fictionalization of life of real-world CIA man, Robert Ames. Purportedly, this novel is on the reading list at "The Farm" (the CIA's training ground at Camp Peary near Williamsburg, VA), and CIA Director George Tenet himself recommended this book in an interview on NPR several years ago. On top of that, it also does an admirable job of making sense (as far as possible) of the wild and varied religious, cultural and political forces operating in the region today. That being said, this is fiction, not journalism while the history it covers is essentially true, it would be a good idea to do some non-fiction reading as well if you want to more fully understand the Middle East picture. Still, the glimpse it gives of life in the field is fascinating, and as entertainment it is an excellent read. The prose is straightforward, the plot is gripping, and the characters are believable and engaging.

A Prisoner of Birth Wow! I read THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO as a teen, and it's always been a favorite of mine, so I was delighted to learn that Jeffrey Archer's new novel was a modern version of that well-loved tale. But A PRISONER OF BIRTH is a good deal more than a new spin on Alexandre Dumas it's a fascinating, edge-of-your-seat thriller that actually makes a few valid points about the world today. From courtroom to prison to freedom with a glamorous new identity and a burning desire for revenge, the young hero of Archer's book is a worthy contemporary counterpart of Edmond Dantes, the "Count" of Monte Cristo. But you don't have to be familiar with the Dumas original to enjoy this terrific story. It's a good, old-fashioned page-turner that succeeds on its own merits. Highly recommended.

Squeeze Play Made Easy 1982 | 157 Pages | ISBN: 0346125316 | PDF | 4 MB This is a practical book on learning common types of squeezes. You won't find exotic (rare) sqeezes that belong in "Adventures in Card Play". Rather you will be taught general technique. Its explained clearly with good examples. (They are double dummy so you need to cover up the E/W hands) Reese says that squeeze possibilities exist in 1 in 6/7 hands. That a lot! Even if other techniques will work (end play) you can still pull off some of the simpler squeezes once every 12 - 20 hands you declare. Imagine making an extra hand every 20 times you declare, thats quite an improvement in your success rate. After reading this book I became more aware of squeeze possibilities. A good warning sign is when you have two 4-3 fits. Its likely that one opponent is long in both suits if neither divides. Also covered is defense against squeezes and what to look for. Reese says that Squeeze technique can't be picked up by playing, it needs to be studied. He suggests coming back to this book several months later and reading it again, and again.

The Art of Betrayal: The Secret History of MI6: Life and Death in the British Secret Service ISBN: 1605983985 | 2013 | EPUB | 528 pages | 3 MB From Berlin to the Congo, from Moscow to the back streets of London, these are the stories of the agents on the front lines of British intelligence. And the truth is often more remarkable than fiction. MI6 has been cloaked in secrecy and shrouded in myth since it was created a hundred years ago. Our understanding of what it is to be a spy has been largely defined by the fictional worlds of Ian Fleming and John le Carre. Gordon Corera provides a unique and unprecedented insight into this secret world and the reality that lies behind the fiction. He tells the story of how the secret service has changed since the end of the Second World War and, by focusing on the people and the relationships that lie at the heart of espionage, illustrates the danger, the drama, the intrigue, and the moral ambiguities that come with working for British intelligence. From the defining period of the early Cold War through to the modern day, MI6 has undergone a dramatic transformation from a gung-ho, amateurish organisation to its modern, no less controversial, incarnation. Gordon Corera reveals the triumphs and disasters along the way. The grand dramas of the Cold War, the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 11 September 2001 attacks, and the Iraq War are the backdrop for the individual spies whose stories form the centrepiece of the narrative. And some of the individuals featured here, in turn, helped shape the course of those events. Corera draws on the first-hand accounts of those who have spied, lied, and in some cases nearly died in service of the state. They range from the spymasters to the agents they controlled to their sworn enemies. And the truth is often more remarkable than the fiction.

American Vampires: Their True Bloody History From New York to California ISBN: 1601632290 | 2012 | EPUB | 256 pages | 5 MB "Just sit back and relax as Dr. Bob Curran takes you to places that only your mind can create with his words and stories. He will delight the imagination." --Tom Danheiser, producer, Coast to Coast AM Vampires are much more complex creatures than Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Twilight, True Blood, or scores of other movies and television shows would have you believe. Even in America. American vampire lore has its roots in the beliefs and fears of the diverse peoples and nationalities that make up our country, and reflects the rich tapestry of their varied perspectives. The vampires that lurk in the American darkness come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can produce some surprising results. Vampires in North Carolina are vastly different from those in South Carolina, and even more different from those in New York State. Moreover, not all of them are human in form, and they can't necessarily be warded off by the sight of a crucifix or a bulb of garlic. Dr. Bob Curran visits the Louisiana bayous, the back streets of New York City, the hills of Tennessee, the Sierras of California, the deserts of Arizona, and many more locations in a bid to track down the vampire creatures that lurk there. Join him if you dare! This is not Hollywood's version of the vampire--these entities are real!

The Battle of Blair Mountain: The Story of America's Largest Labor Uprising English | ISBN: 0465077730 | 2006 | EPUB | 296 pages | 1 MB In 1921, some 10,000 West Virginia coal miners-- outraged over years of brutality and exploitation-- picked up their Winchesters and marched against their tormentors, the powerful mine owners who ruled their corrupt state. For ten days the miners fought a pitched battle against an opposing legion of deputies, state police, and makeshift militia. Only the intervention of a Federal expeditionary force ended this undeclared war. In The Battle of Blair Mountain, Robert Shogan shows this long-neglected slice of American history to be a saga of the conflicting political, economic, and cultural forces that shaped the power structure of twentieth-century America.

Getting It Wrong: Ten of the Greatest Misreported Stories in American Journalism English | ISBN: 0520262093 | 2010 | EPUB/MOBI | 288 pages | 3 MB/1 MB

Did the Washington Post bring down Richard Nixon by reporting on the Watergate scandal? Did a cryptic remark by Walter Cronkite effectively end the Vietnam War? Did William Randolph Hearst vow to "furnish the war" in the 1898 conflict with Spain? In Getting It Wrong, W. Joseph Campbell addresses and dismantles these and other prominent media-driven myths--stories about or by the news media that are widely believed but which, on close examination, prove apocryphal. In a fascinating exploration of these and other cases--including the supposedly outstanding coverage of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina--Campbell describes how myths like these can feed stereotypes, deflect blame from policymakers, and overstate the power and influence of the news media.

38 Nooses: Lincoln, Little Crow, and the Beginning of the Frontier's End English | ISBN: 0307377245 | 2012 | EPUB | 384 pages | 5 MB In August 1862, after decades of broken treaties, increasing hardship, and relentless encroachment on their lands, a group of Dakota warriors convened a council at the tepee of their leader, Little Crow. Knowing the strength and resilience of the young American nation, Little Crow counseled caution, but anger won the day. Forced to either lead his warriors in a war he knew they could not win or leave them to their fates, he declared, “[Little Crow] is not a coward: he will die with you.

So began six weeks of intense conflict along the Minnesota frontier as the Dakotas clashed with settlers and federal troops, all the while searching for allies in their struggle. Once the uprising was smashed and the Dakotas captured, a military commission was convened, which quickly found more than three hundred Indians guilty of murder. President Lincoln, embroiled in the most devastating period of the Civil War, personally intervened in order to spare the lives of 265 of the condemned men, but the toll on the Dakota nation was still staggering: a way of life destroyed, a tribe forcibly relocated to barren and unfamiliar territory, and 38 Dakota warriors hanged—the largest governmentsanctioned execution in American history. Scott W. Berg recounts the conflict through the stories of several remarkable characters, including Little Crow, who foresaw how ruinous the conflict would be for his tribe; Sarah Wakefield, who had been captured by the Dakotas, then vilified as an “Indian lover” when she defended them; Minnesota bishop Henry Benjamin Whipple, who was a tireless advocate for the Indians’ cause; and Lincoln, who transcended his own family history to pursue justice. Written with uncommon immediacy and insight, 38 Nooses details these events within the larger context of the Civil War, the history of the Dakota people, and the subsequent United States–Indian wars. It is a revelation of an overlooked but seminal moment in American history.

The Last of His Kind: The Life and Adventures of Bradford Washburn, America's Boldest Mountaineer English | ISBN: 0061560944 | 2009 | EPUB | 352 pages | 2.4 MB American Brad Washburn had an impact on his proteges and imitators as profound as that of any other adventurer in the twentieth century. Unquestionably regarded as the greatest mountaineer in Alaskan history and as one of the finest mountain photographers of all time, Washburn transformed American attitudes toward wilderness and revolutionized the art of mountaineering and exploration in the great ranges. In The Last of His Kind, National Geographic Adventure contributing editor David Roberts goes beyond conventional biography to reveal the essence of this man through the prism of his extraordinary exploits from New England to Chamonix, the Himalaya to the Yukon. Washburn's remarkable achievements—including nine first ascents of North American peaks—would stamp him not only as one of a kind, but as one of a kind they don't make anymore. Born June 7, 1910, to a Boston Brahmin family whose roots trace back to the Mayflower, this highly intelligent, impatient, and stubborn iconoclast published books, made a monumental first ascent in the French Alps that would become a touchstone in mountaineering history, and lectured on his adventures—including an address to the National Geographic Society—while still in his teens. In 1935, at the age of twenty-four, while others were turning their attention to the Himalaya, the Harvard-educated Washburn led a three-month journey across what was then the largest remaining unexplored territory in North America—the 6,400 square miles of glaciers and mountains in the frozen heart of Alaska's Saint Elias Range. In addition to his prowess as a mountaineer and photographer, Washburn was also a renowned surveyor and cartographer, producing maps of little-known terrain—the Grand Canyon, Mt. McKinley, and Mt. Everest—that surpassed those that came before, and several of which remain the standard. He was also a scientist who would take a regional natural-history museum and transform it into one of the outstanding teaching institutions of its kind in the world. Roberts introduces the family, teachers, friends, colleagues, and rivals who would play important roles in this legendary man's experiences, and re-creates his enthralling journeys to some of the most remote and beautifully wild

places on earth. An exciting narrative of mountain climbing in the twentieth century, The Last of His Kind brings into focus Washburn's deeds in the context of the history of mountaineering, and provides a fascinating look at an amazing culture and the influential icon who shaped it.

Given the choice, he'll go on vacation to Devon or Wales or, if pushed, eat English food on a package tour of the Mediterranean. The Afterlife Experiments : Breakthrough Scientific Evidence of Life After Death English | 2002 | ISBN 074343658X | PDF | 400 pages | 18,2 MB An esteemed scientist's personal journey from skepticism to wonder and awe provides astonishing answers to a timeless question: Is there life after death? Are love and life eternal? This exciting account presents provocative evidence that could upset everything that science has ever taught. Daring to risk his worldwide academic reputation, Dr. Gary E. Schwartz, along with his research partner Dr. Linda Russek, asked some of the most prominent mediums in America -- including John Edward, Suzane Northrup, and George Anderson -- to become part of a series of extraordinary experiments to prove, or disprove, the existence of an afterlife. THE AFTERLIFE EXPERIMENTS This riveting narrative, with its electrifying transcripts, puts the reader on the scene of a breakthrough scientific achievement: contact with the beyond under controlled laboratory conditions. In stringently monitored experiments, leading mediums attempted to contact dead friends and relatives of "sitters" who were masked from view and never spoke, depriving the mediums of any cues. The messages that came through stunned sitters and researchers alike. Here, as they unfolded in the laboratory setting, are uncanny revelations about a son's suicide, what a deceased father wanted to say about his last days in a coma, the transformation of a man's lifelong doubts about the afterlife, and, most amazing of all, a forecast of a beloved spouse's death. Dr. Schwartz was forced by the overwhelmingly positive data to abandon his skepticism, reaching some startling conclusions. Compelling from the first page to the last, The Afterlife Experiments is the amazing documentation of groundbreaking experiments you will never forget.
