Unintended Consequences (Stone Barrington) Excellent fast moving mystery story by one of my favorite authors. Enjoyable well written story involving some of Woods favorite characters but you hadn't needed to read previous book to follow. Mystery , a little romance and even a bit of humor. Enjoyable.
Vengeance Bound The ending of the story was really satisfying to me. Without saying too much, I didn't expect certain things. I love when a writer is able to surprise me, while at the same time creating a conclusion that's believable, and Vengeance Bound accomplishes this in spades. I honestly can't wait to see what Ireland writes next. This was SUCH a great read.
Zazen The bombings create a sense of community, though less with among the victims than those responsible, and after falling in with a crew of Baader-Meinhof type radicals, Della is pulled in different directions: alienation in one extreme and and connectedness in the other. She is also ineffectual at almost everything she tries, whether it's leaving town or convincing the person on the other end of the phone that her bomb threat is real.
True I enjoyed this. It had a plausible plot and was a good page turner. More should read this book. It was entertaining.
The Shadow Lines Some of the most important questions the novel probes are the various faces of violence and the extent to which its fiery arms reach under the guise of fighting for freedom. Ghosh's treatment of violence in Calcutta and in Dhaka is valid even today, more than ten years after its publication. What has happened recently in Kosovo and in East Timor show that answers still evade the modern world. On all scores, Ghosh's novel is excellent reading and would make a very impressive film. Excellent Must Read!

The Might Have Been I rarely read a book of fiction to the end, because I don't often find characters or plot points entirely believable. Mr. Schuster's book engaged me to the very end (though there is one sentence that so ominously foreshadowed the ending that I wish it hadn't been there). As I turned the last page, I wished Edward Everett well. I think I just might peek into the dugout of our local AA team on opening day and look to see if he's there.
The Maze - The Lost Labyrinth (Suspense Thriller)
Once again, Jason Brannon proves he knows how to write. This book is one you won't be able to put down until you've turned the final page. It will linger with you long after as well. Great characters and a highly developed plot.
The Girl Who Couldn't Say No: Memoir of a Teenage Mom Her story is captivating and honest. It is her story and she tells it well. It gave me insight to her as well as other young moms. I know this is her story only but I am sure that there are other young moms out there that experience much of the same. This gives me, the average reader, so much insight and a new found respect for every young mother, whatever their journey.
The Cry of the Icemark The Cry of the Icemark comes with a Compact Disc in the back containing conversations between the author and publisher, with the author reading excerpts from the novel. Although younger readers might not find these conversations interesting, older readers and their parents will be intrigued.
The Book Borrower At first I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. The style is sparse and mysterious, especially at the beginning, and I didn't think I wanted to embark on such a challenging journey. Yet something on the page beckoned the fine writing
pulled me in and seduced me, as did the characters. It was the same feeling I had while reading THE ENGLISH PATIENT and THE HOURS. A whisper... trust me, trust me. And so I did, and was not disappointed!

Retribution Denver Hamilton’s secrets have never been revealed to anyone… any human that is. She made sure of it, changing her life as it was warranted. Decades have passed and what she thought was a final stop is about to change. Everything she’s lived for, everything she’s hidden will come to light and all because of the day he came into her life.
Once You Go Demon Most def felt those feelings. But at the end when the "fake" blah blah blah happened and Riona is like "well now my heart and head are in the same place lets do this thing for real" I wasn't feeling it. I didn't have a change of heart cuz seriously I've always been team "Him", but the story was so interesting and engaging that I didn't mind that part so much. It's probably cuz it was written in third POV and I generally don't get emotionally invested when a book is written like that.
Legends of the Dragonrealm: Shade If you have not read any Dragon Realm books- stop and read from the begining, why deny yourself the discovery. Not that this is not or cannot be a stand alone book, its just dont miss out. The Dragon realm is full of magic and intregue, sword and sorcery and treachery. There are a multitude of races and inhabitants. All of these components are creatively put together by Knaack.
Inside Out Girl I loved this book! It is a beautiful story with wonderful characters. I loved Olivia, a quirky and adorable mix of innocence and heart breaking vulnerability. I loved the relationship between Len and his daughter Olivia. A moving story and a great read from cover to cover.
Don't Go I loved this book because of its steady storyline which takes a good man to the brink of his endurance and brings him back again. There is a courtroom scene which was compelling in its emotion and honesty.

Daddy's Gone a Hunting In her latest novel Mary Higgins Clark, the beloved, bestselling “Queen of Suspense,” exposes a dark secret from a family’s past that threatens the lives of two sisters, Kate and Hannah Connelly, when the family-owned furniture firm in Long Island City, founded by their grandfather and famous for its fine reproductions of antiques, explodes into flames in the middle of the night, leveling the buildings to the ground, including the museum where priceless antiques have been on permanent display for years.
Awakening It's hard to believe this is a first offering. I very much enjoyed reading this book and had a hard time putting it down. I can't wait for volume 2.
A Welcome Grave (Lincoln Perry)
This is the third of the Koryta books that I've read and I have enjoyed every one of them. Other reviewers have referenced the plot line, the character development and how it is even stronger than in the first two novels, and so on. There is almost little to add but I'm going with this. When the winner of the Kentucky Derby goes on to the Preakness and wins out over all the others but by a larger margin, and then goes to the Belmont and repeats it but by an even larger margin, the world knows it has a champion.
A Trouble of Fools (Carlotta Carlyle Mysteries) One does a disservice to an author/series if one reads book #3 or #4 or #5 and then goes back to read #1. Characters develop, relationships develop, and authors develop. I read this first Carlotta Carlyle book before I read the rest, and enjoyed it just fine. Yes, the following books get better as they go along, but you'll have missed out on several important relationship/character points if you don't read this one before you read the others.
A Thief in the Night: Book Two of the Ancient Blades Trilogy Malden fears accompanying Croy and the barbarian MOrget on their quest to dispatch a foul creature of nightmare . . . nor does he want to disturb the vengeful dead. But with an assassin on his heels, the young cutpurse is left with no choice. And there is the comely sorceress, Cythera, to consider promised to Croy but in love with Malden not to mention the fabulous treasure rumored to be hidden in the depths of the demon’s lair . . .

A Tale of Two Castles Carson Levine's story is as magical as it is well-written. Her characters are colorful and endearing. Books like this are time portals for me. I was delighted with this story from start to finish and was sad to see it end. Happily, the end of this novel is the start of a new adventure, one that I shall look forward to reading.
A Spy in the House This book kept me up until the early hours of the morning to finish up the story. As the end approached, I ran to my computer to order the next book in the trilogy, The Body at the Tower. I can't recommend this enough, so definitely give it a chance if you can!
A Song in the Morning Perhaps the most interesting character is Jeez, a steadfast and long-suffering subject in Her Majesty's service, who's come to expect reciprocal loyalty from the London desk jocks who send men into harm's way. But this isn't the old days, and the remnant of Empire is the worse for it.
A Shot in the Dark: A Jesse James Dawson Novel A Shot in the Dark was released earlier this summer, and sequel to A Devil in the Details. Let me get this out of the way, did not enjoy it as much as the first one, but still very much enjoyed. It has more to do with my tastes more than anything. The second books was a bit more of a horror book in a secluded cabin scenario, which in all I'm not a fan of those. But that aside, everything that I enjoyed in the first one, was present in this one. The world keeps expanding and more dimensions get revealed.
A Rising Thunder The thunder of battle rolls as the Solarian League directs its massive power against the Star Kingdom. And once again, Honor Harrington is thrust into a desperate battle that she must win if she is to survive to take the fight to the real enemy of galactic freedom–the insidious puppetmasters of war who lurk behind the Mesan Alignment!

A Princess of Landover So begins an eventful odyssey peppered with a formidable dragon, recalcitrant Gnomes, an inscrutable magic cat, a handsome librarian, a sinister sorcerer, and more than a few narrow escapes as fate draws Landover’s intrepid princess into the thick of a mystery that will put her mettle to the test and possibly bring the kingdom to its knees.
A Prince Among Killers: Oathbreaker Part II As with ASSASIN'S APPRENTICE, the characters and world in A PRINCE AMONG KILLERS were compelling and thrilling. I enjoyed getting to know the characters further and the promise of exciting revelations kept me turning the pages.
A Monster Calls This an incredible book about the enormous burdens of responsibility and grief and loss. I read most of it with anxiety in my heart and as the story intensified, the ache in my throat got worse and worse. By the time I reached the end, hot tears were dripping onto the last two pages, and continued to fall as I immediately read those pages again, and as I read them yet again.
A Flaw in the Blood "A Flaw in the Blood" is an engrossing and well-researched blend of fact and fiction (slightly marred by occasional touches of melodrama) that explores the ways in which each one of us, from the lowliest peasant to the most exalted sovereign, is subject to the same needs, passions, and human imperfections.
A Fatal Grace: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel Every mystery series needs a good detective and a good setting, and Penny is better than most at evoking her small Canadian town and the vivid people in it. And Gamache is a memorable creation I really hope we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the years ahead. Not since Agatha Christie's Marple and Poirot have I found such a likable crimesolver. If you enjoy good writing, fair clues and surprising solutions, you're going to love this series. Highly recommended.

A Darker Domain The police and the reporter are going to collided in this excellent mystery thriller that weaves time and people together in a way only Val McDermid can. Ms. McDermid has filled her book with characters you're going to love and characters you're going to hate and she wraps them with emotion and suspense and ties it all up into a dynamite mystery. But why would you be surprised, everybody knows you can't go wrong with a Val McDermid book.
A Breath of Magic The man in the drawing is someone else. Chloe meets this other man (Ben) and there are a lot of sparks between them. Then her magic finally starts and this was a huge surprise but it also leads to a spoiler so I don't want to ruin it. Verda is back and funnier then ever and we get to meet Alice's baby and learn she has powers already.
Win Forever: Live, Work, and Play Like a Champion Pete Carroll is a classic example of living life to the fullest no matter what period in life a person is at. This book covers what a positive attitude can bring to the table. More importantly, however, is the clear vision he has for his team and how he articulates that. There is no gray area very clear points. In short, I love it!
Whistle It could be argued that it is the weakest of the trilogy. Jones hurried to write the book before his early death at age 55. It was published more than 20 years after the war's end and suffers somewhat from the knowledge of those 20 years. The references to the songs seem more nostalgic than informative. His analysis of the sexes would have been brilliant in 1946, but easily made in the 1970s. But those are minor points, because the book is every bit as honest as gritty as anything that he ever wrote. Good enough that you don't want it to end, but harsh enough that you're afraid to read it a second time.
What We Become This is a fast moving adventure. Too bad it's not more appropriate for 12 year olds upwards, but there's just too much cursing and sexual innuendo. It should be more carefuly marketed to mature teens, or else better edited.

Voyage Across the Stars Voyage Across The Stars contains two entertaining sidebar Hammer's Slammers outer space thrillers. Both are well written and exciting though somewhat similar in tone as each Slade battles a gauntlet of foes though one is at the end of a glorious career and the other is coming of age at the start. With respective nods to the classics Odyssey by Homer and The Voyage of Argo by Apollonius of Rhodes, readers will enjoy the escapades of the uncle and nephew in the Hammer's Slammers galaxy.
Villains Inc. (Wearing the Cape) After the heartbreak in wearing the cape I needed more Astra in my life. This book did not disappoint! I enjoyed wearing the cape so much and was so happy to discover there was a sequel. Cant wait till the next book in the series comes out!
Vampire Vacation I loved the humor that was woven throughout this engaging story. It was a pleasure to read the well-edited pages. There were quite a few secondary characters within the story but the author did a great job individualizing the important ones so that it was easy for me to keep track of who was who. The descriptions of the landscape glistening
under a heavy blanket of pristine snow in the near continuous darkness were so realistic and believable that a few times I actually shivered. Vivian sets the bar high with her alluring sexuality and there are several scenes that are intense and provocative. The exceptionally erotic sex-scenes, however, are written in a fun, playful manner and the reader is encouraged to abandon inhibitions and fully enjoy the freedom of the fantasy. This book is the first in a planned series by this debut author and I am looking forward to further madcap adventures with Vivian, the sometimes despotic ruler of her domain, Rafe, her soul mate and fierce protector, and all the other unforgettable characters who serve the dedicated and loving couple.
Usurper of the Sun The huge amounts of speculation given over to scientific concepts can make Usurper of the Sun a little bit heavy and dry reading for certain passages of the novel, but only because Housuke Nojiri takes the time to consider the matter deeply, from a scientific as well as a from a human viewpoint. It takes in the nature of intelligence and communication - and how artificial intelligence may provide us with the means to communicate, and more importantly, 'think' about the universe around us on another level if we are to make any significant breakthroughs in how to reach beyond. What is marvellous is that the author is able to consider these ideas within the context of what remains a fascinating and often thrilling science-fiction adventure.
Underdogs The boys have a serious falling out and are eventually brought back together by two particularly heart wrenching scenes, one involving a yappy ball of fur and the other is a rescue worthy of a "Best Brother Ever" award. By the end of the book, the boys are still close, but a shift has taken place and new respect has been earned. It becomes clear that neither Cameron nor Ruben stands in anyone's shadow. They've both realized that they don't have to live up to the standard the world has set for them, only the standard they've set for themselves and they're fighters and fighters keep fighting until you can't get back up.

Touch & Geaux Two recommendations here: If you haven't given this fabulous series a try and you enjoy strong male leads in action romance, then you need to get busy and start reading these- beg, borrow or steal if you have to (kidding, sort of). If you're a fan, get this the second you can and make sure you have lots of time set aside to read because you won't want to lay it down once it gets going.
Try Not to Breathe I really enjoyed this story. Even though it's about a very serious and a potentially very depressing subject, the story felt very positive throughout. It really makes you think about how you treat people on a daily basis and how your actions could possibly affect them. It also makes you think about how profoundly people are affected by suicide, even when it's an unsuccessful attempt. I look forward to reading more from Jennifer Hubbard.
Ties That Bind This is a well plotted thriller about serial killings that are first thought to be suicides. Her main characters, Kanesville Police Detective Samantha Monthomery and Salt Lake City Police Detective Gage Flint, are believable everyday people, investigating a murderer called Vengenace for supposed wrong doings by the victims. This story kept me turning pages until it was finished. It is a fast paced, exciting thriller and very informative about the Mormon Culture. I highly recommend this book to all suspense and thriller readers.
Those That Wake This compelling teen science fiction noir is a page turner with sharply delimited characters struggling against a grey world and a tangled mystery. Karp does great world-building here, setting up a New York City a decade or two from now. Cell phones are the principle point of human contact (and are pretty much essential to life), in this city bleak with consumer distrust of one another and overall despair. The author has done a great job of getting at issues of identity, privacy, security, and how delicate perceptions of self and society can be.
Third World America: How Our Politicians Are Abandoning the Ordinary Citizen The `positive' aspects of the book and back-of an-envelope economic masterplans are nowhere near so interesting, but they are not what make the book significant. The book's importance is in adding a dimension of articulacy to what the American masses might, just might, be preparing to do from a sense of outrage and injustice. If they have nothing to lose but their pink slips, salaries, homes, wages, pensions and benefits but for some reason did not realise that fact, then this is a book that can leave them in no doubt. Do they feel like uniting?

The Typewriter Girl I have to admit, reading The Typewriter Girl was an uphill battle...well, most of the time. The first 200 pages or so, my attention kept wandering - I wondered what to make for dinner, how on earth I was going to make the deadline for my lit papers - essentially doing everything but focusing on the book.
The Thin Red Line "The thin red line" is fiction, but barely. The last sentence of the book gives Jones away. It's fiction in the sense of characters ann their development, and building atmosphere. It is very good fiction, really a masterpiece. And it's a true account on the horrors of war. Fiction and truth, ballanced. Enjoy both parts.
The Stone Demon The narrative is a nice blend of romance and action. Both are handled skillfully without gratuitous or easy copouts. The scenes of romance are touching and believable though I am not a 17 year-old girl, likely reflect personal experiences and feelings. The action is fast and the sense of danger is felt for all concerned. Though violence occurs, it happens mostly in the mind of the reader as Mahoney does not dwell on it. Violence begets sacrifice and loss which
is very much present by the end of the story. The losses create reflection and in most cases, respect but moreover, a real assessment of what sacrifice means and what violence does.
The Still Point of the Turning World In doing so she brings the reader the news at the end of the world and urges each person to embrace the time we have and understand the place death and grief holds in every life. Her writing is lovely. The book is replete with searing quotes from around the world of poets and philosophers. It celebrates the lives of all our ill and hurting children.
The Quality of Mercy As Sullivan wends his way to the north, so too does Erasmus Kemp, the two in fated collision since Sullivan's kindness to Kemp's dying cousin aboard the "Liverpool Merchant". In the microcosm of the north, Unsworth renders an intimate view of the miner's life and limited expectations, save one, James Borden, brother-in-law to the deceased Billy. James dreams of a garden on a small patch of land where things can grow, where a man might escape the mines. In intricate layers, Unsworth erects an elaborate maze of conflicting aspirations, one an edifice to progress as men define the laws of governance and commerce, where mercy falls into the hands of the few who interpret "the natural order of things" the other built of hope, luck and a trick of fate, the adamant rights of propriety and property failing to inhibit the blossoming of a humble man's dream for a life free of other men's legislations.

The Practice Date - (Young Adult Romance) The parents in the novel don't quite reach John Hughes level, and barely show up to say, "Hi," a couple times. Of course, the life of a teen girl with a crush rarely revolves around her parents, so with only 11,000 words to play with, they relative invisibility of both Jane's parents, and Lance's, is forgivable.
The Lost Files: The Last Days of Lorien The fifth of the mini books between the real novels. Great one sitting read. Love this author and series. Thank you pittacus!
The Jerusalem Inception Thus, the title of the book, "The Jerusalem Inception," highlights adventures of the "Six Day War" and the rebirth of Jerusalem as the united capital of Israel, and the birth and manipulation through lies of Abraham's son, Jerusalem, as an agent for his country.
The Flaming Motel The Flaming Motel had me hooked in the first chapter. I can usually figure out most mysteries in the first third of the book...this one puzzled me well into the final third! I love Ollie and can't wait to read more!!
The Games The result is a highly specialized killing machine, its genome never before seen on earth. Not even Silas, with all his genius and experience, can understand the horror he had a hand in making. And no one, he fears, can anticipate the consequences of entrusting the act of creation to a computer's cold logic.

The Farmer's Daughter The third roughly 100-page-novella in here is the more spiritual, a vampire story of altered consciousness, alienated but advancing toward love, at last remarking how wonderful it is to finally make love with someone you actually love.
The first novella opens with a line of alienation. The closing of the third novella ends with the protagonist recognizing the interconnectedness of living things, the ME of LonesoME diminishing in the evolution of the self toward empathy, a recurring point in Jim Harrison's Buddhism/naturalism worldview.
The Xecutioness With The Xecutioness, Tobias Buckell becomes the hero of middle-aged mothers everywhere. Since I'm now one of those, I loved this story about a mom who loses her family and finds herself. Tana is a desperate woman who just does what any mother would do in the same circumstances. It's hard for me to imagine becoming a hero, but Tana's story is completely believable and after hearing it, now I wonder if maybe I could be... I can highly recommend The Alchemist and The Xecutioness to fantasy lovers of all ages. I wish they had been longer.
The Crazyladies of Pearl Street For Trevanian fans, this novel is double fulfilling because it gives you an insight into the mind of this mysterious author. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his takes on radio versus television, IQ tests, religion, contemporary American politics... Some of which are in his cybernotes, not in the novel.
The Dead Room This book had me reading till 4 in the morning trying find out who the killer was! I never figured it out on my own. Mystery, Suspense, Danger, Tears, Ghosts.. and Nikki Blackhawk and Adam Harrisoun really made this an all round superb read for me.
The Curve of the Earth Start with the first book in the series Equations of Life and enjoy the ride, and an exciting ride it is. Good writing (a truly wonderful thing in this time of poorly written ebooks), character you will care about, humor, action, science, provocative social thinking and great world-building. Big fun!

The Book of Madness and Cures Gabriella does not follow the well trodden commerce road we know as the Spice route. Instead she uses cues taken from cherished letters, some many years old, to find the man she calls Father, also a physician. Perhaps most appealing of all are the medical lore and excerpts of the book of Diseases Gabriella strives to compile, with her father's notes as well as her observations. These are at times remarkably accurate, others will leave you chilled or perhaps bring a chuckle.
Star Wars: Darth Plagueis Overall, I was pleased to see how James Luceno built Darth Plagueis, Darth Sidious, and Darth Maul into truly compelling and evil characters. It easily stands head and shoulders above most Star Wars novels both for its character development and its storytelling. I haven't been the biggest fan of Luceno's books in the past, but it's clear he dedicated a lot of time, thought, and love to this book. A must read for any Star Wars fan!
Strong Enough to Love This is a novella that is a preview of the author's upcoming series. This is a good story about two people who were best friends and wanted to be more but he was married and left town to give his marriage another try. Two years later he is back. . . . and divorced. The author packs a lot in a very few pages-you definitely root for this couple because
they did act ethically two years ago and it's interesting to see what happens when the obstacles are removed. As a teaser for the series this is effective and the price is right.
Strangers in Love Rachel gets to the train station every morning with a spring in her step because of that mysterious guy who catches the same train. He`s tall, dark and handsome and she`s hoping he`ll notice her.
Stilettos and Steel STILETTOS AND STEEL was going to be another one of those fictionalized "misery memoirs," but decided to read it anyway because of the interesting historical backdrop. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. At the heart of this taut, well-written, noir-esque crime book is an endearing love story. The author's writing is visceral, entertaining, yet at the same time literary and evocative. I really enjoyed getting to know the colorful cast of characters and immediately became invested in every one. Overall, the book is terrific and I will recommend it to all my friends. I find it hard to believe this is the author's next book. I hope there are more on the way!

Stay This is Allie Larkin's first novel, yet it reads as though she's written a dozen or so already. I am thoroughly impressed with her style of writing, and will be keeping my eyes peeled for more of her works in the future.
Snowbound There is no shortage of villains in Crouch's Adventures in Criminal Land, part Dan Simmons (Carrion Comfort) minus the social context, part just plain outrageous enough to make a good thriller. While the plot is certainly a reach, Innis the weak link in agreeing to this misadventure, the result is a shocking and brutal contretemps crawling with killers, man and wolf. Crazy enough to keep me reading.
Sidewinders Great new series by a wonderful writer. Have read others of his books which are mostly about the Old west and mountaineering. This takes a new twist to the western genre with characters who are much older than the usual gunfighters written in the dime store novels. A great read over all.
Shot Girl Karen E. Olson manages to tie up the series nicely by providing a terrific thrill ride, packed with a variety of her usual, unusual characters. In this book we manage to meet a male stripper, a couple of "shot girls", a somewhat mysterious youth minister, wayward kids and teachers, and most importantly, Annie's ex-husband, who's a trip all by himself. Watching Annie fall into yet another untenable situation, this book really ratchets up Annie's background and emotional history. It's completely satisfying from start to finish.
Secondhand Smoke Annie is a hard-edged character, a bit foul-mouthed, callous and world-weary, and sick of her job after years of reporting on New Haven's criminal class. She seems to go to some trouble to hide her humanity from herself and others, but it's not clear to me precisely why she so armors herself. It's true that her relationship with her mother is strained, and her job as a reporter necessarily distances her from would-be newsmakers who don't want their peccadilloes showing up in the paper. The job contributes to Annie's identity as an outsider in her own neighborhood. But I'm not sure these sufficiently explain her cynical detachment. It would be nice, at any rate, to see her character develop some emotional nuance in subsequent outings.

Secrecy The Renaissance is long gone, and the city is a dark, repressive place, where everything is forbidden and anything is possible. The Enlightenment may be just around the corner, but knowledge is still the property of the few, and they guard it fiercely. Art, sex and power - these, as always, are the obsessions. Facing serious criminal charges, Gaetano Zummo is forced to flee his native Siracusa at the age of twenty, first to Palermo, then Naples, but always has the feeling that he is being pursued by his past, and that he will never be free of it. Zummo works an artist in wax.
Rush Me Because of the realism of the characters and their interactions, this book came off as a really fresh take on a classic romance, boy-meets-girl storyline. And how they met, for those of you who haven't read the book, is unexpected and absolutely hilarious. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Satan's Stone: Demon Kissed I can't express how great this series is.. I couldn't put any of the books down.. I read non-stop one book after the other, You have to read this and it just a a fact.. You will love this series..
Reefs and Shoals: An Alan Lewrie Naval Adventure This time, at the beginning of 1805, Lewrie is sent to the West Indies to hunt privateers. By his own admission, this is not the most glamorous or lucrative employment for such an experienced naval officer, but as ever, Lewrie manages to make it very entertaining in his own inimitable style and it does give him the chance to command a squadron for the first time. One of the most interesting aspects of this series is not only the character of Lewrie but also the cast of supporting characters, such as Lieut. Westcott, his second-in-command, who has featured in the last book as well as various other new commanding officers such as Lieut. Bury of the sloop Lizard. All of these are very well drawn, with their odd quirks and foibles. It keeps the whole sequence of books fresh, especially as Mr. Lambdin has a very clever habit of introducing these secondary characters from the past into the current books and thus we can follow their progress even if it is in a very truncated form. It is a very clever way of giving the whole series added continuity. Although a self contained book that leaves Lewrie in a comfortable position by the end, the big event of 1805 has not happened yet, although there are references to its build up throughout this book. I do hope that Mr. Lambdin manages to involve Lewrie in said event in the next installment. He is certainly in the right area geographically. There are hints in the afterword that he might.
Rabbit Hole As the characters interact, we see them as individuals, not just as participants in the terrible drama of their shattered world, but we also see that grief is not and cannot be a full-time activity. Many moments of humor make their lives more realistic and provide relief for the audience.

Prophet of Bones The new Michael Crichton is how I would describe Ted Kosmatka after reading this book. This thing reads, but it's also steeped in fascinating science that doesn't hamper the thriller-like pacing, but rather, somehow, actually speeds it up. The writing is phenomenal too it's actually better than Crichton's work in that regard. I'm buying his first book, THE GAMES now and imagine I'll be a loyal reader or this author for years to come.
Promises to Keep Told from eleven-year-old Roz's perspective, the complexity of emotion is deep as she struggles to understand family dynamics. Tillie is a story unto herself. To say she's a character is an understatement. She's a hoot, adds some gentle humor to the saga, and is the kind of character all writers love to discover. Ann Tatlock is a master storyteller, one of the best, and in Promises to Keep, she outdid even herself. Novel Journey and I give it our highest recommendation. A must read.
Prince of Wolves I have to say that I was absolutely delighted when I began to read this book. I had not heard anything about it, the title and cover just caught my eye. I love the characters, the theme, and the "swoon." I found myself laughing out loud numerous times, especially at the humor between Jacque, Jen, and Sally. It was one of those books that you don't
want to put down. It will make you want to find your own "Fane" also. There was such a great balance of humor, romance, action, and drama. If you love young adult fiction (whether you are a young adult or not), I think you will be pleasantly suprised with Prince of Wolves.
Plan Bee (A Queen Bee Mystery) This is the kind of book where you can recognize some characters, relax and enjoy them, learn something new, but remain on high alert for the chase to find answers and solve the mystery. A very enjoyable book, #3 in the series, it gets better all the time.
Nightingale Just when I thought I had figured out what was going on with the political unrest, Miller tossed in a curveball to shake things up. Her descriptive writing helps the reader to make a connection and feel like they are a part of the story. Lark's personality is easy to insert ones self into as we experience her angst and confusion. I could feel what Lark was feeling as if I was part of the story and inside the character. Her love for Beck is innocent and pure but her Mother's plan to sabotage it is enough to break anyone's heart. No matter whom Lark turns to for answers, she ends up walking away with even more questions. It seems the only way to solve all of the problems is to figure out Malin's past and to find a way to use that information to improve herself.

Mrs. Perfect Ms. Porter takes us through the painful process as Taylor Young is stripped raw of the layers of veneer that make up her life. It's certainly not pretty, and in these hard economic times, indeed, it's rather painful. But as always with a Jane Porter novel, it's real. Breathtaking, heartwreching, can't-stop-reading-even-though-it's-1 AM-real.
Men in Black: How the Supreme Court Is Destroying America A good example is the recent decision striking down all state sodomy laws. The first time the court considered this was in 1987, when a majority applied a originalist interpretation in concluding that the ratifiers could not have intended to create a constitutional right to sodomy. That was obvious given that sodomy was universally outlawed when the Constitution and relevant amendments were ratified and for over 150 years later. As the court pointed out, societial norms may have changed since ratification, but the proper way for that to be addressed is by our elected representatives, not a court decision. The recent sodomy decision reached the opposite conclusion, with the enlightened public policy of our robed masters overruling our state legislatures.
Matchplay: A New Adult Romance I'm conflicted about this book. Great read. Rainy was a strong character, but I wanted Rainy to have a part in bringing down the disgusting tournament. I thought the ending was way too short.
Lightspeed: Year One The writing cannot be denied as excellent throughout this collection of stories. However, the majority of the stories are exceedingly dark. Not the right read if you're looking to be uplifted about stories of the future.
Inferno: Chronicles of Nick The story took so many paths that I had definitely not predicted. Simply could not put it down till I finished it...

Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?
This was and is a very good book to listen to every day to reinforce the change we can make in our lives to live a better life.

Larry Bond's Red Dragon Rising: Blood of War This continues the series, and it's really a pretty good continuation too. I looked forward to getting it, and it's easily as good as going to a couple of good movies. Author' character development, and the interactions of people, are well arranged and written into the story. Just another enjoyable read.
Larkstorm (The Sensitives) (Volume 1)
This is a good book for young-adult readers - the Hunger Games and Harry Potter age group. It's certainly not high fiction but Larkstorm is great if you're in the mood for an adventure.
How Huge the Night This book was written in a way that EVERYONE, young readers and old, can fully grasp the knowledge of the happenings during WWII. It truly amazes me that that time in history was as bad as it was. When I read a book like this, I can completely engross myself so that I feel the actual turmoil of each and every character. They become real to me.

Hansel and Gretel (Faerie Tale Collection) I loved Hansel from the very beginning! He was funny, loving, the ultimate protector and just all around great guy! He brings a smile to my face just thinking of things he did throughout the book. And Gretel! She's a little feisty thing! But also very sweet and loving! Hansel and Gretel is a cute, fun, quick read! Perfect for a Sunday afternoon! And I can't wait to read about their kids in Jack and the Beanstalk! It's going to be another good one... I just know it!
Glue GLUE is written in Welsh's signature style of working-class Scottish dialogue, which makes the experience of reading this novel very rich and animated. If you are familiar with TRAINSPOTTING than GLUE will be familiar in its form and context. There are even cameo references to the characters and plot of TRAINSPOTTING in this book. My only complaint with GLUE refers to the torture killing of the guard dogs occurring in the first part of this book. I was repulsed by the gruesome details and I strongly wonder about the merit of including this scene at all. This must be an attempt by Irvine Welsh to push the literary boundaries. Regardless, GLUE is a novel written from the imagination of Irvine Welsh and therefore is sure to entertain those readers wanting a unique reading experience.
God Hates You, Hate Him Back: Making Sense of The Bible Authors and sources such as Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett and alike are brilliant if you've got a mind for science and it is safe to say that few fundamentalist/evangelical/creationist Christians do. As such using their methodical logic to logically disprove something that is utterly illogical, i.e. the Bible, is pointless. This book allows you to take a new, fresh and utterly hilarious look at one of history's most revered works. It makes biblical doctrine accessible like never before.
Gideon's Corpse (Gideon's Crew)
Maybe not as good as Gideon's Sword, but I'm very glad they brought him back. I liked it a lot.
Former People: The Final Days of the Russian Aristocracy Former People is a well written and thorough study of how a group of people who before 1917 were stereotyped as frivolous bon vivants managed to cope with and survive the harshest change of fortune possible, doing so with dignity, determination, and strong religious faith.

Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson, Book 7) This book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but not everything is tied up in a neat bow. I am still very interested in what is going to happen with the fae and how that is going to effect the other supernatural beings. Humans tend to fear everything that is different and fear often evolves into anger and hate. We have not seen the last of the issues that exploded in this book. You will be sad. You will be jubilant. You will rejoice. This book will pull emotions out of you and it will all be worth it. You will wonder how you can possibly wait for the next adventure, but then you definitely will.
Follow the Money This is the story of Oliver (Ollie) Olson, a law student who's finished his second year of school. Now, allow me to translate the complete meaning of this sentence for anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of attending law school. Ollie knows the law school drill now and can probably brief case opinions in his sleep. However, when it comes to dealing with the real world aspects of dealing with actual clients with genuine problems, Ollie's a nice guy, but about as clueless as they come.
Edge of Midnight (The Chasing Evil Trilogy) Mia remembers nothing of her ordeal, but agrees to help McFarlane buy taking part in an experimental hypnotism project in an attempt to regain those lost memories. With a growing attraction between Hale and McFarlane the suspense becomes that much more intense as they battle a ticking clock before this madman can collect anymore victims.
Dreamside DREAMSIDE is the American release of the debut novel of award winning author Graham Joyce (see THE TOOTH FAIRY and DARK SISTER). The story line is exciting and filled with increasing terror that works because the characters seem real as they struggle to cope with needing each other to survive even as they know that being
together intensifies their individual and group fears. Although, a superb novel that showcases Mr. Joyce's talent, the climax seems abrupt and left questions unanswered. Still, this is classic science fiction along the lines of the Outer Limits and Flatliners.
Earth Below, Sky Above The final episode of The Human Division, John Scalzi's new thirteen-episode novel in the world of his bestselling Old Man's War. Date Me (The Keatyn Chronicles) (Volume 3) I even came to like Whitney a little bit. Jillian Dodd is amazing at making you fall in love with her characters. She is an all around amazing author. I highly recommend this. No doubt about it I am dying for Love Me and Hate Me!!! Another solid book from Bandit Publishing!!!!
Corvus: A Life with Birds The author captured me from word one. She weaves animal anecdotes and bird facts into interesting and touching stories of her family and their daily life in Scotland. Her love for birds and nature in general is evident in every sentence. This is a delightful book. She describes the birds she cares for in anthropomorphic terms, but that doesn't bother me - I do the same when asked to describe our resident household birds and the birds I've cared for temporarily with animal rescue and rehabilitation. The book is easy to read and very uplifting.
Close Enough to Touch There are lighter moments in Close Enough to Touch. Some occur between Cole and Grace, but many are provided by the delightful secondary cast of characters. Bartender Jenny is wonderful, and she is the first person to slip past Grace's defenses. Eve Hill is Grace's boss, but also her friend. Grace's Great Aunt Rayleen Kisler is gruff and no nonsense, but she also has an undeniable charm that makes her one of the most enjoyable characters in the novel.
Captive - An Erotic Novel You never know when you wish for something you might just get it. The woman in this story wished for a partner who was into bondage and her wish came true. She is free but will she leave of stay for some more of the hottest sex of her life? You will have to read it to find out because I am not telling. Enjoy!
Broods of Fenrir His character takes you right to the edge till you're holding your breath, unsure of what he might do next. My second favorite character was Alice, as her feelings of friendship for Brand run so deep, and despite being considered weaker, she's the last one you want to make snap. All of the characters in here are exceptionally real and have something about them to love, or in the case of their adversaries, seriously hate.

Blood of Aenarion King's writing has a great flow. It's a steady story, and King takes us through the twins' journey to Lothern, their exploration of the city and learning about the political rivalries of the city, and then to their testing with great skill. The brothers are both possessed of considerable, innate talent in battle (Tyrion) and magic (Teclis), but King has done an excellent job of not making it appear too easy for them. They do not morph from unskilled children into master-level warrior and mage overnight. Indeed, they remain largely unschooled at the end of this novel - although they are clearly exhibiting some of the skills they will eventually come to master. There are mistakes made and lessons learned, and King has made their progression feel very natural.
Broken Voices I was very taken with Taylor's writing, his patient approach to story telling. He seems to know that it's what we don't see clearly or understand fully which is most frightening. As an aside, the ratting scene is, I think, heartbreaking, a foreshadowing of what was to break upon these boys and their unsuspecting society in but a few short years.
Black Flagged Apex (Volume 3) Konkoly's writing and pace have never been sharper, but what most impressed this reviewer about Apex is the keen, world-weary dialogue that takes place between longtime bureaucrats situated in high positions. It's as almost as if the author worked in one of these agencies himself. Apex is his longest book and one that will lead the reader on a long, adventurous and breathless journey through the deepest secrets of American government and corporate culture. This book wins on many levels and will surely secure its status in the genre.
Amaranth (The Resistance Trilogy, Book 1) This book was amazing the characters are so realistic and you hang on every word. Gavin and Camille are the perfect couple and I cant wait for the next book. This book is a must read and i recommend it to all readers.
Ad Nauseam This is C.W. LaSart's debut book, and let me just say that it is one hell of a debut. Having followed her other short stories published in previous anthologies, I was beyond excited to dig into a collection consisting entirely of her own work. And I was not let down. LaSart is quite new to the scene, but she certainly doesn't write like it I will not be surprised if I soon see her name on a Bestseller's list.

A Veiled Deception (A Vintage Magic Mystery) A VEILED DECEPTION with its magical element and vintage take on the clothing so often seen in the chick lit genre will appeal more to romance lovers than mystery buffs looking for a clever mystery with a clever hunt for the culprit. Sweet, funny and heart-warming at times, A VEILED DECEPTION is a charming story of a young woman's homecoming, a homecoming fraught with funny and outrageous incidents. As a mystery, however, A VEILED DECEPTION leaves one wanting more clue twists, more discovered history and more of the center of the story.
A Razor Wrapped in Silk Complex, interesting, well written and accurate to historical setting. The main characters are engaging and well drawn. Links to literature and Russian culture add interest.
A Shade of Vampire 2: A Shade of Blood A Shade of Blood is not only a story about Vampire's and Hunter's, but it's about the constant struggle within. The need to follow your heart, yet lead with you head. The want of choosing what's right, instead of choosing what's right for right now. It's about understanding that no matter how desperate one is to bring about change in bettering
themselves, but learning to cope with the demons within and accept them as part of your make. I absolutely love this series and it's definitely topping my favourites.
A Deadly Penance (A Templar Knight Mystery) For the first quarter of the latest Templar Knight mystery, Bascot does not appear as Richard and Ernulf start the investigation. The four detectives make a wonderful team as their discussions are intelligent and relevant. Fans of medieval cozies, set in a vividly described background in which readers will feel the cold, will enjoy A Deadly Penance.
A Dangerous Age Just when you think this book is going to center around Winifred and Louise, Gilchrist takes her readers to Tulsa where she introduces us to their black sheep cousin, Olivia, a tough-as-nails newspaper editor who is forced to change her view of the war. She revisits a first love, only to find loss of another kind. There was something just a bubble off plum about this book. While the writing style is solid, the plot feels incomplete.

A Dance of Ghosts PI John Craine is struggling to cope with the weight of his past. Sixteen years ago his wife, Stacy, was brutally murdered. Craine found her body in their bed. And since then, to escape the pain and the unanswered questions, he has buried himself in work by day, and whisky by night.
$200 and a Cadillac Add me to the list of readers impressed by this book. Fingers Murphy knocked this one out of the park, and he did it with believable characters, spot on dialog, lots of cool atmosphere, and a very tight plot, all of it done up in a style of writing that keeps the reader in the pocket for the entire ride. I'd never heard of this author before, but believe me when I say he's on my short list of ones to watch. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. I mean seriously, how can you not dig a book written by a dude named Fingers, and with such a cool cover to boot?
The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-200 This is a comprehensive and definitive read and should be required reading for anyone who wants to know what went on - direct from the horses' mouths. It gives a whole new perspective on how future military entanglements will unfold. Shock and awe may have to share turf with military diplomacy - not such a bad idea.
The Gap Year The story is told in turn from both Cam's and Aubrey's perspectives and delves deep into the mother/daughter relationship with wisdom and compassion. Ms. Bird is a master at recreating the ups and downs of family life and this is one of her best books to date. If you enjoyed Ms. Bird's other books, then you'll love this one, too. A compelling, good read.
The Gamekeeper's Lady Frederica Bracewell grew up under a cloud of shame. As an illegitimate child, she was treated by her uncle like a servant. It wasn't until she encountered the new gamekeeper that shy, innocent Frederica started to feel like a true lady‌.

The Gallows Curse This is a story full of treachery, lies, treason with a murder or two thrown in for good measure! The original plotline kept me hooked throughout all 500+ pages, the story never slowed down, I didn't think there were any boring parts.
The Gallows Bird Ms. Lackberg had a great idea for a story but lacked some effort and imagination to really put it captivatingly as in her previous books. I know it's only a fictitious book but in such a context (unless it's Sci-Fi or Fantasy) it should still be in a way for the reader to get into the story. Here, it was just too unbelievable and made all the characters appear foolish in a completely unthinkable fashion, given the personalities attributed to them from previous novels.
The Future of Us Very clean, easy read. It was interesting, I enjoyed reading it, but it is not the deep impact sort of read. And the message was worthwhile.
The Fury There is much to love in THE FURY. Pinter has been slowly but steadily building a supporting cast around Parker that manages not to overshadow the main character and yet remains memorable in their own individual ways. Pinter is also quite adept at sprinkling surprises throughout his narratives, and THE FURY is no exception: it is like unwrapping a Christmas present from beginning to end.
The Frenzy The plot, while thin, was interesting, and certainly different from other werewolf tales. I also liked how real the characters were, even though some of them felt under developed. I feel like several story lines, especially Pace's, were not explored enough and kind of left me feeling confused. Overall, a so-so book.

The Girl in the Steel Corset (Steampunk Chronicles) The Girl in the Steel Corset is an exciting new series to watch for, and one that will appeal not only to fans of steampunk, but readers who enjoy characters with enhanced abilities, a female main character with a feisty personality and the strength to back it up, a story that has action and mystery and some seriously creepy inventions, and not just one, but two love triangles.
The Girl in the Blue Beret Stone remembers the great kindness he was shown and especially the unbelievable courage of these people. He especially remembers a teen-age girl in a blue beret, who guided him through war-torn Paris to meet his contacts. His escape route took him on a harrowing journey over the Pyrenees to Spain, but he made it back to his base and never looked back. Now a 60-year-old widower and anxious to make peace with his past, Stone returns to Belgium determined to find the brave people who saved his life so long ago. What follows is an amazing story of courage and redemption and another chance at love. And yes, he does find the girl in the blue beret, whose own story is both powerful and effecting.
The Gilded Seal
This is the first novel I have read by Twining. I found it interesting but not compelling. For the first third of the book it was difficult to keep the cast of characters in mind & I often had to look back to see who was who. It has an interesting plot with many twists. The historical references interwoven in the story made it worth the read. Lots of violence and murders.
The Gift of Illusion: A Thriller I loved this story until the end. The conclusion was fine, how the bad guy was stopped was good but the story was missing the epilogue where the reader is shown how everyone is alright or scarred or mourned.
The Geometry of Sisters Who knew that math would make a good idea for a great read! Combine the math with the close relationships of two generations of sisters and Luanne Rice rates an A plus in my book! As we follow grieving mom Maura Shaw moving her two children Beck and Travis from Ohio to Newport, RI, we learn more about the death of her husband and what caused her oldest daughter Carrie to run away. The sister plot thickens as there is also a deep rift between Maura and her own sister Katherine, some sister ghosts at the academy, and two other rich sisters at the academy.

Attila: The Gathering of the Storm I was curious to see if the second book of the Attila the Hun series would be as interesting to read as the first, and it was. I normally don't like stories told by a third person (in this book it was by a scribe), and sure enough, I ended up skipping some pages which I hate to do! I just don't think this type of writing helps most stories. I do wish I knew before I bought the series, that the story would be written in this manner and I probably wouldn't have felt as guilty about skipping pages. Mr. Napier is a good author, but Conn Iggulden did a much better job with his Genghis Khan series.
The Gathering (Darkness Rising, Book 1) I went in expecting a slower paced first book with a cliffhanger ending. Personally, I am enjoying the introduction of a previously unknown supernatural race from Armstrong's universe. (At least, I don't remember this particular race being mentioned before.) Werewolves and necromancers are fun and all, but we've seen them before. Maya is something new!
The Gatekeeper As long as you're not looking for a fuzzy soft cozy with a older lady solving a caper, this book isn't for you, but otherwise, action, twists, intrigue and just a really great read, go, stop reading this review and definitely read this book.
The French Maid It would be unfair to give this book a low rating because it is very short. Yes, the story is very short about a 20 minute read. If you don't like the book because it was too short, it isn't a big deal because "The French Maid" is free! Maybe I'm biased because I am a Sabrina Jeffries fan. I like the story...it was sweet and short. The characters are likeable and despite the length chemistry and clear emotions are present between the characters. I recommend the book so get it and enjoy!
The Fourth Perimeter While a lot of the book deals with the emotional issues between Kurt and his fiance, brought on by his son's death, some of the story deals in suspense. I felt the story was too predictable. From the beginning I knew who was behind the murders and that made the whole story frustrating. Kurt's gullibility didn't help. I've read all Tim Green's books and this is my least favorite...

Unexpected Consequences: Why the Things We Trust Fail Published: 2011-09-12 | ISBN: 0313393117 | PDF | 280 pages | 3 MB The world is full of wonderful products and services that occasionally disappoint and even harm us. Unexpected Consequences: Why The Things We Trust Fail explores the reasons these failures occur, examining them from technological, human, and organizational perspectives. Using more than 40 recent catastrophic events to illustrate its points, the book discusses structural and machine failure, but also the often-overlooked failure of people and of systems related to such things as information technology, healthcare, and security. As the book demonstrates, faulty technology played a surprisingly small part in many of the scrutinized disasters.
Author James William Martin finds cognitive factors and organizational dynamics, including ethics, are major contributors to most unexpected and catastrophic failures causing loss of life and extensive property damage. With that fresh perspective in mind, Martin is able to suggest remedies that address service failure and just may help prevent future disasters from taking place.
The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking: How Irrational Beliefs Keep Us Happy, Healthy, and Sane 2012 | ISBN-10: 1594630879 | EPUB | 304 pages | 0,5 MB What is so special about touching a piano John Lennon once owned? Why do we yell at our laptops? What drove the Yankees to dig up the Red Sox jersey secretly buried beneath their new stadium? And what's up with the phrase "Everything happens for a reason"? Psychologists have documented a litany of cognitive biases—misperceptions of reality—and explained their positive functions. Now, Matthew Hutson shows that all of us, even the staunchest skeptics, engage in magical thinking all the time—and that we can use it to our advantage, if we know how to outsmart it. Drawing on cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, and anthropology, Hutson shows us that magical thinking has been so useful to us that it's hardwired into our brains. It encourages us to think that we actually have free will. It helps us believe that we have an underlying purpose in the world. It can even protect us from the paralyzing awareness of our own mortality. In other words, magical thinking is a completely irrational way of making our lives make sense. With wonderfully entertaining stories, personal reflections, and sharp observations, Hutson has written a book that is entertaining, useful, and ever so slightly alarming.
How to Use, Adapt, and Design Knitting Patterns: How to knit exactly what you want, every time—with confidence! 2010 | ISBN-10: 0764145029 | 144 pages | PDF | 19 MB Here's an easy-to-follow self-teaching course that shows knitters how to get exactly the results they want from lessthan-perfect commercial patterns. The authors begin with the basics, explaining the meanings of the symbols and abbreviations used in knitting patterns. Next they show readers how to take their own body measurements and how to identify their body landmarks--those especially important points that need to be measured in order to get good results when adapting and modifying patterns. A detailed section on the specifics of adapting patterns shows how to change necklines and sleeves, how to change a pullover sweater into a cardigan, how to transform a chunky wool pattern into a lightweight design by changing yarns, and much more. A separate chapter instructs ambitious knitters on designing their own patterns from scratch. The book concludes with seven ready-to-use knitting patterns that less-confident knitters can copy and adapt. This book, which is suited to the needs of knitters of all skill levels, features hundreds of color photos, line illustrations, and diagrams.

He is not merely a magician, but a genuine mystic, an intensely private person who is absorbed in what Blake called “the inner worlds” and their mystery....David Conway was brought up in a remote country district of Wales....When he was four he was taken to see a local farmer, Mr. James, (who) remained his chief mentor, introducing him to the basic principles of magic...Someone should persuade him to write about his apprenticeship; from the hints he has dropped, I suspect it would be as fascinating as Carlos Castaneda's accounts of Don Juan, as well as being rather more truthful.” Colin Wilson in his Introduction to David Conway's Magic: an occult primer, 1988

Decoding the Message of the Pulsars ISBN: 1591430623 | 2006 | EPUB | 190 pages | 3 MB A new interpretation of nearly 40 years of interstellar signals and the prophetic message they contain • Contains extensive analysis of pulsar data, revealing new ideas about the origins and functions of pulsars • Provides proof of an extraterrestrial communication network • Includes information about the formation of crop circles and force-field-beaming technology In 1967, astronomers began receiving and cataloging precisely timed radio pulses from extraterrestrial sources, which they called pulsars. These pulsars emit laserlike radio beams that penetrate through space much like searchlight beams. Paul LaViolette, who has been researching pulsars for over 25 years, shows that while these pulsars have long been assumed to be spinning stars, the true nature of these radio sources has been grossly misunderstood. In Decoding the Message of the Pulsars, LaViolette shows that pulsars are distributed in the sky in a nonrandom fashion, often marking key galactic locations, and that their signals are of intelligent origin. Using extensive scientific data to corroborate his theory, he presents evidence of unusual geometric alignments among pulsars and intriguing pulse-period relationships. Equally compelling is the message LaViolette contends is being sent by these extraterrestrial beacons: a warning about a past galactic core explosion disaster that could recur in the near future.
Calamities & Catastrophes: The Ten Absolutely Worst Years in History ISBN: 1907595457, 1780720166 | 2011 | EPUB | 288 pages | 927 KB They say that history is written by the winners. Not according to Derek Wilson. In this fascinating, revelatory book, Derek tells the story from the point of view of the losers - collating a catalogue of calamities and catastrophes which have shaped our world more than historians tend to let on. In ten lucid and entertaining chapters, Wilson identifies the very worst years of human history, from the destruction of the Roman Empire in 541 through the march on Leningrad in 1942 to the Vietnam War of 1968. Condensing two thousand years of war, plague, misrule and political villainy, he identifies the traitors, scumbags and villains, whose lust for power - and sometimes, sheer incompetence - brought such terror to their times. He delves into the natural forces beyond human control that have wiped out whole peoples. And, most of all, he shows how history has a horrible habit of repeating itself.
Blood in the Snow, Blood on the Grass: Treachery, Slaughter, Murder and Massacre - France 1944 ISBN: 0752470264 | 2012 | EPUB | 192 pages | 4 MB Nearing D-Day, Allied intelligence used thousands of young men hiding in France's forests and hill country to avoid compulsory labour service in Germany as bait to draw German forces away from the Normandy beaches. There are two principles of guerilla warfare: never to concentrate your forces or rish a pitched battle. But with RAF airdrops of pistols and Sten guns came British, American and French liaison officers who concentrated these untrained civilians in remote areas of France. They thought Allied airborne foreces would land and help them drive the Germans out of their country, but instead were hunted down by collaborationist French paramilitaries, Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS troops. They died in the snows of winter through high midsummer. Those taken prisoner were raped, tortured and shot or deported to death camps in Germany. Many of their killers were themselves murdered after the liberation, when thousands of French women were also publicly humiliated as sexual traitors.

Britain BC: Life in Britain and Ireland Before the Romans ISBN: 0007126921 | 2003 | EPUB | 512 pages | 700 KB Based on new archaeological finds, this book introduces a novel rethinking of the whole of British history before the coming of the Romans. So many extraordinary archaeological discoveries (many of them involving the author) have been made since the early 1970s that our whole understanding of British prehistory needs to be updated. So far only the specialists have twigged on to these developments; now, Francis Pryor broadcasts them to a much wider, general audience. Aided by aerial photography, coastal erosion (which has helped expose such coastal sites as Seahenge) and new planning legislation which requires developers to excavate the land they build on, archaeologists have unearthed a far more sophisticated life among the Ancient Britons than has been previously supposed. Far from being the woaded barbarians of Roman propaganda, we Brits had our own religion, laws, crafts, arts, trade, farms, priesthood and royalty. And the Scots, English and Welsh were fundamentally one and the same people.

Beyond Belief: The Secret Lives of Women in Extreme Religions ISBN: 1580054420 | 2013 | EPUB | 328 pages | 480 KB
Beyond Belief addresses what happens when women of extreme religions decide to walk away. Editors Susan Tive (a former Orthodox Jew) and Cami Ostman (a de-converted fundamentalist born-again Christian) have compiled a collection of powerful personal stories written by women of varying ages, races, and religious backgrounds who share one commonality: they’ve all experienced and rejected extreme religions. Covering a wide range of religious communities—including Evangelical, Catholic, Jewish, Mormon, Muslim, Calvinist, Moonie, and Jehovah’s Witness—and containing contributions from authors like Julia Scheeres (Jesus Land), the stories in Beyond Belief reveal how these women became involved, what their lives were like, and why they came to the decision to eventually abandon their faiths. The authors shed a bright light on the rigid expectations and misogyny so often built into religious orthodoxy, yet they also explain the lure—why so many women are attracted to these lifestyles, what they find that’s beautiful about living a religious life, and why leaving can be not only very difficult but also bittersweet.
The Perfect Egg and Other Secrets ISBN: 0747576319 | 2005 | EPUB | 160 pages | 4 MB A witty and erudite little book about the joys of food, with line drawings by New Yorker artist Saul Steinberg. “The writer who never talks about eating, about appetite, hunger, food, about cooks and meals, arouses my suspicion, as though some vital element were missing in him.” Scholarly, playful, idiosyncratic, and witty, Aldo Buzzi’s The Perfect Egg is an excursion into the food that has obsessed, provoked, and intrigued the author through his life. A book of genial and highly refined chat, enriched with personal anecdotes, recipes, and quotations from literature and history, it is a tribute to the profound pleasures of food. Along the way, the reader discovers recipes from Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and the United States, related by Buzzi in a tone that is casual but delightfully attentive to detail. He writes about how to make lime soup, what goes into an olla podrida, varieties of futurist cuisine, the difference between edible and inedible pigeons, and the emotional resonance of overcooked pasta. And, of course, he reveals how to cook the perfect egg.

The Monty Hall Problem: The Remarkable Story of Math's Most Contentious Brain Teaser English | 2009 | ISBN: 0195367898 | 208 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Mathematicians call it the Monty Hall Problem, and it is one of the most interesting mathematical brain teasers of recent times. Imagine that you face three doors, behind one of which is a prize. You choose one but do not open it. The host--call him Monty Hall--opens a different door, always choosing one he knows to be empty. Left with two doors, will you do better by sticking with your first choice, or by switching to the other remaining door? In this lighthearted yet ultimately serious book, Jason Rosenhouse explores the history of this fascinating puzzle. Using a minimum of mathematics (and none at all for much of the book), he shows how the problem has fascinated philosophers, psychologists, and many others, and examines the many variations that have appeared over the years. As Rosenhouse demonstrates, the Monty Hall Problem illuminates fundamental mathematical issues and has abiding philosophical implications. Perhaps most important, he writes, the problem opens a window on our cognitive difficulties in reasoning about uncertainty.

Gorbachev, On My Country and the World English | 1999-11-15 | ISBN: 0231115148 | 300 pages | PDF | 12,2 MB Here is the whole sweep of the Soviet experiment and experience as told by its last steward. Drawing on his own experience, rich archival material, and a keen sense of history and politics, Mikhail Gorbachev speaks his mind on a range of subjects concerning Russia´s past, present, and future place in the world. Here is Gorbachev on the October Revolution, Gorbachev on the Cold War, and Gorbachev on key figures such as Lenin, Stalin, and Yeltsin. The book begins with a look back at 1917. While noting that tsarist Russia was not as backward as it is often portrayed, Gorbachev argues that the Bolshevik Revolution was inevitable and that it did much to modernize Russia. He strongly argues that the Soviet Union had a positive influence on social policy in the West, while maintaining that the development of socialism was cut short by Stalinist totalitarianism. In the next section, Gorbachev considers the fall of the USSR. What were the goals of perestroika? How did such a vast superpower disintegrate so quickly? From the awakening of ethnic tensions, to the inability of democrats to unite, to his own attempts to reform but preserve the union, Gorbachev retraces those fateful days and explains the origins of Russia´s present crisis. But Gorbachev does not just train his critical eye on the past. He lays out a blueprint for where Russia needs to go in the next century, suggesting ways to strengthen the federation and achieve meaningful economic and political reforms. In the final section of the book, Gorbachev examines the "new thinking" in foreign policy that helped to end the Cold War and shows how such approaches could help resolve a range of current crises, including NATO expansion, the role of the UN, the fate of nuclear weapons, and environmental problems. Gorbachev: On My Country and the World reveals the unique vision of a man who was a powerful actor on the world stage and remains a keen observer of Russia´s experience in the twentieth century.

The Way of the Knife: The CIA, a Secret Army, and a War at the Ends of the Earth ISBN: 1594204802 | 2013 | EPUB | 400 pages | 3 MB A Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter’s riveting account of the transformation of the CIA and America’s special operations forces into man-hunting and killing machines in the world’s dark spaces: the new American way of war The most momentous change in American warfare over the past decade has taken place away from the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq, in the corners of the world where large armies can’t go. The Way of the Knife is the untold story of that shadow war: a campaign that has blurred the lines between soldiers and spies and lowered the bar for waging war across the globe. America has pursued its enemies with killer drones and special operations troops; trained privateers for assassination missions and used them to set up clandestine spying networks; and relied on mercurial dictators, untrustworthy foreign intelligence services, and proxy armies. This new approach to war has been embraced by Washington as a lower risk, lower cost alternative to the messy wars of occupation and has been championed as a clean and surgical way of conflict. But the knife has created
enemies just as it has killed them. It has fomented resentments among allies, fueled instability, and created new weapons unbound by the normal rules of accountability during wartime. Mark Mazzetti tracks an astonishing cast of characters on the ground in the shadow war, from a CIA officer dropped into the tribal areas to learn the hard way how the spy games in Pakistan are played to the chain-smoking Pentagon official running an off-the-books spy operation, from a Virginia socialite whom the Pentagon hired to gather intelligence about militants in Somalia to a CIA contractor imprisoned in Lahore after going off the leash. At the heart of the book is the story of two proud and rival entities, the CIA and the American military, elbowing each other for supremacy. The CIA, created as a Cold War espionage service, is now more than ever a paramilitary agency ordered by the White House to kill off America’s enemies—in the mountains of Pakistan and the deserts of Yemen, in the tumultuous civil wars of North Africa and the chaos of Somalia. For its part, the Pentagon has become more like the CIA, dramatically expanding spying missions everywhere. Sometimes, as with the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, their efforts have been perfectly coordinated. Other times, including the failed operations disclosed here for the first time, they have not. For better or worse, their struggles will define American national security in the years to come.
The Secret Sentry: The Untold History of the National Security Agency ISBN: 1596915153 | 2009 | EPUB | 432 pages | 4 MB In the first complete history of the National Security Agency, America’s most powerful and secretive intelligence organization. In February 2006, while researching this book, Matthew Aid uncovered a massive and secret document reclassification program—a revelation that made the front page of the New York Times. This was only one of the discoveries Aid has made during two decades of research in formerly top-secret documents. In The Secret Sentry, Aid provides the first-ever full history of America’s largest security apparatus, the National Security Agency. This comprehensive account traces the growth of the agency from 1945 to the present through critical moments in its history, from the cold war up to its ongoing involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. Aid explores the agency’s involvement in the Iraqi weapons intelligence disaster, where evidence that NSA officials called “ambiguous” was used as proof of Iraqi WMD capacity, and details the intense debate within the NSA over its unprecedented role, pressed by the Bush-Cheney administration, in spying on U.S. citizens. Today, the NSA has become the most important source of intelligence for the U.S. government, providing 60 percent of the president’s daily intelligence briefing. While James Bamford’s New York Times bestseller The Shadow Factory covered the NSA since 9/11, The Secret Sentry contains new information about every period since World War II . It provides a shadow history of global affairs, from the creation of I srael to the War on Terror.

Optimal Detox: How to Cleanse Your Body of Colloidal and Crystalline Toxins English | ISBN: 1594774897 | 2013 | EPUB | 176 pages | 1 MB A practical guide to identifying and targeting toxins with the most appropriate and effective detox methods • Reveals the two main types of toxins: colloidal, which affect circulation and organ function, and crystalline, which cause tissue damage and pain • Explains the toxins behind specific illnesses and which of the 5 excretory organs--liver, intestines, kidneys, lungs, or skin--should be stimulated for optimal detox • Details how specific foods can produce these toxins and trigger illnesses The lasting benefits of detoxification and internal cleanses are becoming well-known and accepted—in part, because these practices are more vital than ever for optimal health and longevity and in the fight against environmental and dietary toxins. Christopher Vasey shows how accumulation of toxins is the primary cause of illness and how the key to successful detoxification is identifying the type of toxin--either colloidal or crystalline--polluting your biological terrain. He explains
how colloidal toxins hinder circulation and organ function, while crystals move around the body damaging tissues and causing lesions and pain. Left unchecked, the two forms can combine to create “stones--such as gallstones or kidney stones. Beyond finding the cause of an illness, the most important reason to correctly diagnose your type of toxin is to ensure you choose the most effective method of detoxification and stimulate the appropriate excretory organ--liver, intestines, kidneys, lungs, or skin. For example, a person seeking to purge his system of crystals should increase his fluid intake to stimulate the kidneys not encourage bile production, because crystals cannot be expelled via the liver. With clear, practical instructions and guidance, Vasey explains how to identify which type of toxin is triggering your illness and which medicinal herbs, hydrotherapy techniques, or nutritional options are the best choice for each specific condition or combination of ailments. He reveals which foods produce colloidal and crystalline toxins and should therefore be avoided. This targeted method of detoxification enables each of us to cleanse our bodies of accumulated toxins safely, accurately, and successfully.
