Picturing Perfect It's got ups and downs, moments where I held my breath, moments where I happy cried, it's just an all around great read. Melissa Brown has done it again and I'm going to even go as far and say, this is her best yet.
Outcast The book was left in a way that I could be a stand alone book but there was also more to draw on should it be a series and if that is the case I look forward to reading the next installment.
One (One Universe) (Volume 1) I loved this book. I love Merrin, the clever, angry, unsure-where-she-fits-in-the-world protagonist. I love Elias (mmm, Elias) her equally clever and utterly adorable boyfriend. I love the conflict between Merrin's need for independence
and her growing attachment to said wonderful boyfriend. I really love that. Merrin's determination to stand on her own two feet is probably the best thing about this book, and it's definitely why I'll be recommending it left, right, and center.
Nebula Awards Showcase 2013 The Nebula Awards Showcase volumes have been published annually since 1966, reprinting the winning and nominated stories in the Nebula Awards, voted on by the members of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America(R). The editor selected by SFWA's anthology committee (chaired by Mike Resnick) is two-time Nebula winner, Catherine Asaro. This year's volume includes stories and excerpts by Connie Willis, Jo Walton, Kij Johnson, Geoff Ryman, John Clute, Carolyn Ives Gilman, Ferrett Steinmetz, Ken Liu, Nancy Fulda, Delia Sherman, Amal ElMohtar, C. S. E. Cooney, David Goldman, Katherine Sparrow, E. Lily Yu, and Brad R. Torgersen.
Murder at Wrigley Field: A Mickey Rawlings Baseball Mystery The appealing and resourceful Mickey probes at the very source of America's neuroses at a time when the music of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven is banned, the director of the Boston Symphony jailed for playing German music, German-Americans are being lynched, and even innocent Dachshunds and German shepherds neglected or killed. But the world will right itself again, and even professional baseball survives the turmoil. Soos's characters are fully developed and intriguing. His portrait of an earlier America in the throes of war hysteria says a lot to us today. We can take the warning to heart. There are no lectures here, though, just a rousing good tale.
Murder at Fenway Park: A Mickey Rawlings Baseball Mystery This is the third Mickey Rawlings mystery I've read, and I look forward to the others. The characters are well drawn and consistent, and ring true for the period. Very well researched for early baseball accuracy, and the murder keeps your interest, too.
Murder at Ebbets Field: A Mickey Rawlings Baseball Mystery In this 1914 period piece, sometime infielder Mickey Rawlings hopes his NY Giants will beat the Dodgers and earn a shot at the World Series. There's a movie crew shooting the game and right next to the Dodger's dugout, Mickey sees the luscious and famous movie star, Florence Hampton. When the director asks for a man from each team as bit players, the Dodgers pick Casey Stengel and the Giants choose Mickey.
Monument to the Dead (A Museum Mystery) I love all of Connolly's books and this is no exception. She does such a wonderful job of not only telling a story, but educating the reader about behind the scenes workings with which that series deals. In the case of this series, it is what goes on in a historical museum.
Linked It focused on Lissa, character development, action and family and friendship for a good bit, so the love aspect didn't even really come into play until around the middle of the book. Although I sensed a possible development early on. I enjoyed where it went though.
Leaving Lancaster As I read Leaving Lancaster I finally put my finger on an issue that is common with novels set in the Amish Community. The characters are drawn to the community based on the community itself, the simplicity in which it lives, and the character's tie to family. It isn't often that we get an in depth view of the character's relationship with God. It seems that the Amish are more known for living off the grid than they are for their faith. Leaving Lancaster hints at spirituality, but doesn't fully deliver.
Land of Marvels The elements may sound familiar, but author Barry Unsworth travels back to 1914 when the Ottoman Empire was in the closing act on the world stage and would soon be carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey in the aftermath of World War One (Iraq was created in 1920 by a League of Nations mandate and under the protection of the United Kingdom). The historical novel focuses on the already strong push by the Western super powers to gain a strong and lasting presence in the region as the empire was teetering on the brink of irrelevancy.
Wired for War Eli Colden believed he was a normal kid. He believed that it was the 21st century. That the year was 2013. Eli Colden has been living a lie. His life has been micromanaged by people he has never met. The town he lives in does not exist. The year 2013 has ended centuries previously. His friends are merely actors, given orders and information in order to carry out the deception.
Winter Queen (Fairy Queens #1) Ilyenna is fatally wounded when a neighboring clan attacks her village. Instead of letting her die, the winter fairies heal her and make her their queen...but it comes at a price. She'll lose everything. Her humanity, her emotions, her memories, her family...her love.
Wild Abandon At a once vibrant communal-living property in the British countryside, back-to-basics fervor has given way to a vague discontent. A place that once buzzed with activity, from the polytunnels to the pottery shed, now functions with a skeleton crew. Founder Don Riley surveys his domain with the grim focus of someone who knows what’s best for everyone—and isn’t afraid to let them know. Especially when those people are related to him.
Who Murdered Garson Talmadge These books have a good plot line, a little humor and not overloaded wit explicit sex. A very good read.
Valley of Shields (Empire of Bones) Cast out from his homeland, Sendatsu has used his sword-fighting talents to survive in the foreign land of the Vales. With the assistance of Rhiannon - the first human to use magic in hundreds of years - Sendatsu has helped Huw and the Velsh defeat an invading army. Better still, Sendatsu now has the key to reclaim his children.
Treacherous Toys (Renaissance Faire Mystery) Treacherous Toys is the fifth book in the Renaissance Faire Mysteries by Joyce and Jim Lavene and it didn't disappoint!! I have enjoyed getting to know the main characters Jessie Morton and Chase Manhattan. Treacherous Toys takes place during the Christmas season, the other Ren books take place during the summer so this was an exciting change for me since I love Christmas time.
To Catch a Rabbit A perfect crime novel, gritty and true to life....There are loads of characters that just make you want to read the sequel. Will there be one?
Throne of Oak (Maggie's Grove) As usual ms Bell delivers a great read, full of likeable characters and fun. In this book I loved the way Mina and Draos interacted. I can't wait to get the story about Ash and Selena, Greer and Mollie and Iva and Noah!
The Third Son The Third Son has everything I look for in a book: memorable characters, an intriguing plot, wonderful writing and beautiful and evocative settings. The story takes place in a tumultuous and terrifying period of Taiwan's history, as the Chinese Nationalist Army takes control of the island. It tells the story of Saburo, the least favorite son of a Taiwanese politician. He is unloved and abused by his parents and older brother, but his gentle spirit and strong character enable him to endure. But his life changes one fateful day in the forest, when he meets a young girl, Yoshiko - his first love that he never forgets. Yoshiko helps him become the man he struggles to be as he is torn between his culture and duty and his determination to be free to make his own choices. I highly recommend this dazzling debut by Julie Wu.
The Third Coincidence Jack McCall has a great love for his country as he has proved many times before and will prove one more time, as he accepts a special assignment form the President to find out who is killing the Supreme Court justices. Jack puts together a team of agents he trust, which includes Rachael Johnstone, a former love interest. This is a story of mystery, murder and investigations, it makes you think you are involved in a real special ops investigation. This author has done a superb job of making the characters life-like and the story almost real. Congratulations on a wonderful book Mr. Bishop!
The Silver Star This book is definitely along the same vein as "The Glass Castle" and "Half-Broke Horses" - many of the themes are the same - but this is a slight step below. If this had been my first Jeannette Walls book, I would have loved it, but since it is my third, I felt the ending was slightly rushed and that the writing was a little too cutesy at times. However, this is like comparing two exceptional pieces of art against a third good piece by the same artist. It's still pretty good, just not as great as the first two.
The Pirate's Wish
After setting out to break the curse that binds them together, the pirate Ananna and the assassin Naji find themselves stranded on an enchanted island in the north with nothing but a sword, their wits, and the secret to breaking the curse: complete three impossible tasks. With the help of their friend Marjani and a rather unusual ally, Ananna and Naji make their way south again, seeking what seems to be beyond their reach.
The Last Warner Woman Beautiful descriptions, playful structure. I bought this book to help me make the transition to life in Jamaica. It's a fun read and will take you in unexpected directions!
The Last Academy This book kept me up late into the night reading. The writer's voice was strikingly refreshing and unusual. The main character, Camden, has a perspective on the world that is at times hilarious, sarcastic, and self-effacing, which is an interesting contrast to a plot line that becomes progressively darker. It captures the awkward, uncoolness of the high school experience in a way that is raw and at times frankly uncomfortable, but it's real.
The Inner City The stories in this book are not dry exercises or rigorous academic proofs. And they don't strain for profound insight. And they certainly aren't overwritten or full of MFA huffing and puffing. They are clever, imaginative, engaging and rewarding. That's a lot right there, and certainly enough to make this book worth a close look.
The Humans The unimaginable happened when the alien Andrew Martin, living as Isobel's husband and Gulliver's father soon transformed his alien self into something human. The process of his transformation provides one of the most fascinating insights anyone could have into what it means to be human. Could it be that only an alien can see how ridiculous it is for anyone to eat beef, not because there is anything inherently objectionable in that, but in calling a cow beef when it is being eaten ("A cow is a cow even when you call it beef")?
The House of Impossible Loves In Cristina Lopez Barrio's "The House of Impossible Loves," Clara Laguna is a daughter of the town witch. Her mother reads futures with the help of a bag of cat bones, and creates potions and amulets to ward off danger. Nothing can protect Clara from a curse inherited by all of the Laguna women. Each woman is destined to suffer for love, until the curse is broken with the birth of a boy. For generations, the spell hasn't been broken. Clara falls victim too the curse,
but instead of suffering, Clara plans revenge. The first dozen pages are hard to get through, but once Clara announces that she is plotting revenge, the story picks up significantly. Definitely a book to read!
The Family Mansion THE FAMILY MANSION is an intensely charming book that is truly laugh-out-loud funny from cover to cover. It is both smart and witty, full of sophisticated surprises, great insights and very unique historical perspectives. It delves heavily into philosophy and really entertains. This is not the type of novel with which you will easily get bored. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys wonderful writing, great humor, or human interest stories.
The Eye of Moloch The Eye of Moloch is a frightening tale of a government surveillance/police state out of control. Information is power. In the wrong hands it becomes a weapon manipulated by a wealthy mastermind whose objective is to create the chaos that will destroy the US Constitution and man's freedom. In it's place the new world order will emerge, controlled by a priviledged few.
The Execution of Noa P. Singleton I really did not know what to expect from this novel. Our protagonist is not a sympathetic or even likeable character. The story chronicles the last few months of Noa as she awaits execution for murder. The story covers quite a bit of her life much of which is not good. This is the build up for the crime, trial and incarceration. The story twists and turns and does have an unexpected ending. Does the mother of the victim really want to help her murderer? Does Noa's estranged father have a secret that could help or hurt? Does the Englishman have the answer to save Noa? Why will Noa not help save herslf? These are just some of the issues that pop up in this novel. It is a quick read with a surprise.
The Engagements We initially are introduced to the true life advertising executive, Mary Francis Gerety who penned the slogan "A Diamond is Forever". The year is 1947and Mary Francis is 32 years old and trying to make a name for herself in the world of advertising. She has a job as a copywriter at the most powerful Ayer advertising agency, and working on the De Beers Diamond campaign. In 1947, women were hired only to provide a feminine point of view, however Mary Francis is married to her job and wants to further her career.
The Disappearing Girl The Disappearing Girl is a well written, captivating, heartfelt story, and the fact that there are Kaylas all around us makes it that much more powerful. Anyone who has ever dismissed anas and mias as just being overly dramatic should be required to read this, if only to glimpse the hell these girls put themselves through in order to be accepted.
The Crossroads Cafe I went through many emotions reading this book, laughing on one page, crying on the next. I have recommended this book to everyone i know and i just know it will touch their heart as it did mine. If biscuits are food for the soul through your stomach...this is food for the soul through your eyes. Beautiful.
The Center of the World The painting in question bears the same title as the novel, and it is a work of both erotic power and remarkable beauty and detail. Thomas Van Essen leads us, deliberately and steadily, through the stories of the different people in different times who experience the painting. From its inspiration and creation by J.M.W. Turner at Lord Egremont's estate in the 19th century to its discovery hidden away in a humble barn in the 21st century, we see how it changes hands over the years, and how each person who sees it is changed in their turn.
The Blackmail Club, A Jack McCall Mystery Author David Bishop presents the second book in his Jack McCall series titled: The Blackmail Club. McCall, a former assistant to the CIA Director, emerges as the owner of a Washington, D.C. based detective agency. McCall learns of a dear friend's death and is hired by the widow to learn why her normally stable psychiatrist husband committed suicide. Nora Burk, McCall's partner and confidant, uses her native instinct and intellect to work in harmony with McCall, while radiating feminine charm and sensuality that only dead men could ignore.
The Automaton's Treasure I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has read and enjoyed any of the books and/or stories in the Assassin's Curse series. This is a nice, quick read that will allow readers to get to know one of the more mysterious characters from the books, and will take them on a completely different adventure than we've previously seen in the series. I would give this a 4/5, and suggest that if you haven't read any of the Assassin's Curse books, you go do that ASAP!
Surviving High School It's amazing! M. Doty did a masterful job of combining the realities and tensions of high school with a fast paced, adventure filled story. As you'd expect with a high school novel, he throws in a healthy dose of romance, too. I love how Emily starts out as a freshman with her swimming and you get to see her mature and evolve, not just as an athlete or student, but as a person.
Stormbringers (Order of Darkness) Italy, 1453. Luca and Isolde grow more and more attracted to each other as they continue their journey to unravel the mysteries throughout Christendom. But their travels are delayed by the uprising of an intense religious crusade that threatens the balance of the civilized world. Death lingers in the air as war ravages on, but this religious conflict is nothing compared to the arrival of an intense and deadly storm.
Spartan Frost (Mythos Academy) Ms. Estep's Mythos Academy is sure to appeal to all those who love a good character-driven YA that uses humor, snark, and seriousness to create a world you won't want to leave.
SECRET I discovered this book browsing through and was immediately drawn to the premise/plot. I found I really identified with Cassie in ways I never have with other book characters, and I was excited to go on her little journey of self discovery with her. I wish there was a SECRET club in my area. LOL I will definitely be buying any sequels of this novel. People keep comparing this book to 50 Shades, but really, they shouldn't. The two are nothing alike. If you hated 50 Shades, try this book instead. If you loved 50 Shades, and want to read something a little more adult, this is the book to read.
Rush: The Game: Book 1 RUSH lives up to its name, delivering adrenaline, suspense and action, as well as fully developed characters, and a swoon-worthy hero. I'm ready for the next one!
Rescuing Rapunzel (The Charming Nobles) Nick is a Charming Noble, through and through. He's dedicated to his duty, his family, and his best friends, who just happen to be the other Charming Nobles. What's not to love about charming, wealthy, eligible bachelors after all? Getting tangled up with Rapunzel turns his life inside out, upside down, and spins him into a journey he never thought he'd take. The one to finding his true love.
Reasonable Fear It's hard to top some of the wonderful reviews already posted, but I just finished reading Reasonable Fear and once again Mr Pratt kept me reading late into the night (a work night at that) and I absolutely loved it. If there is one thing that I tell friends, whom I've recommended Pratt's novels to, it's to expect the unexpected in any Joe Dillard story. Well, when I got to Part 3, I had no idea how the author would pull off the ending of the novel, but he did it and left me wanting more.
Real Ugly (Hard Rock Roots) (Volume 1) This book had me from beginning to end I don't normally read rocker romance but this was frigging awesome sh^%. I loved how it started to how it ended with characters and the scene of rockers. I can't wait to read more. Not mean for under 18 due to language and content mature readers only.
Kill Zone (A Spider Shepherd Short Story) I was fortunate to get an advanced copy and found it an easy, pacy read as always with Stephen Leather's writing style. Great story, characters are made very real by great dialogue. Thoroughly recommend it.
Ignite (Volume 1) Wonderfully written. I've fallen in love with the characters and story. I could not put it down! Cannot wait to read more!
Hunting a Detroit Tiger (Mickey Rawlings Baseball Mysteries) This is highly entertaining addition to a highly entertaining series. Mickey Rawlings is nicely drawn as the 25th man on the roster, always struggling to keep his spot on the team, ever mindful that injury to himself or getting on the wrong side team management could mark the end of his baseball career.
He's Gone Thus Dani proceeds to fill us in on their back-story and the lives they have had that led up to the morning of Ian's disappearance. This is not always a pretty story, and that makes Dani and Ian true-to-life characters because they are far far from perfect people. But as all avid readers know, it's the flaws in characters and their bad choices that make for riveting reading. Dani is a fairly reliable narrator her internal monologue is well written and mature. The character doesn't hide her sins or make too many excuses for them, although I suspect some readers will be set against her on principle.
Ghost Time I love the way that the story is told: from a single point in time, we're treated to the stream-of-consciousness thoughts of 15-year-old Thea. Each chapter either takes us further back in time to relive days and weeks past, or days and weeks into the present. You get to uncover their stories bit by bit and it made it really hard to put down and go to sleep (or pay attention to my kids, but anyhow).
Free Fall: A Prelude to Hidden Order The Carlton Group led by Scott Harvath has landed on the Sierra Star to rescue this ship from Somalia pirates. One of their the rescuers has injured his knee upon landng on the Sierra Star. The rescue is now down to three members. The Carlton group has agreed to accept no paymeny if they are not sucessful
Fatal Descent (An RM Outdoor Adventures Mystery) The clients include a family off on what may be there last adventure together, 3 ladies that plan a special adventure trip together once a year without the hubbies, and a divorced couple with their daughter who just cannot accept her parent's marriage is over. All their different stories create compelling subplots to the mystery.
Extinction Point Extinction Point by Paul Jones was a good read, but expectations kind of got in the way for me. I love post-apocalyptic fiction and this novel definitely fits that bill, but I wasn't expecting science fiction. And science fiction is a better label for Extinction Point than post-apocalypse. Having said that, the science fiction elements were still interesting even if rather weird.
Exodus (Extinction Point series) This book is much more polished than the first one. I found no slow parts of this book. I was with Emily every minute, due to the skill of the author's characterization and suspense building. I read it and literally could not put it down. I have been waiting for this book since February. Now i need another one.
Damnation Marked: The Descent Series (Volume 3) With out a doubt one of SM Reine's finest efforts, showing a new and more serious side to her writing. When it was over I had to simply stop and decompress as I came back to the real world and left the desert and the demons that inhabit it in so many forms. A must read for fans of the series.
Buried In a Bog (A County Cork Mystery) I just finished this book late last night. I love it. While there were a couple of mysteries to be solved, the biggest part of the story is Maura's introduction to her grandmother's origins. She has just lost the only family member she has ever known, and honors her grandmother's last wishes by going to Ireland for a week. It's a journey from a busy, big, and impersonal city in the US to a place time seems to have stopped. A journey I think many of us wish we could take. Add this to your list of favorites by Ms. Connolly. It is a winner and I'm looking forward to more time with Maura.
Broken Arrow A legend reborn in the flames of war!- More than a year has passed since Robert Stokes defeated De Falaise, the self-styled Sheriff of Nottingham. In that time, The Hooded Man has been training a new force to police the area: The Sherwood Rangers. But cracks are beginning to appear in this fledgling system – the men are overstretched and a new threat has appeared in the shape of a dangerous Satanic cult. Meanwhile, an old enemy has persuaded ‘The Tsar’, the Emperor-like ruler of Russia, to move against Robert.
Boy Nobody I recommend Boy Nobody to all action buffs out there and to reluctant teenage boy readers as the action is non-stop. Thrilling, gripping, compelling and at times heart-tugging, Boy Nobody is a book you won't be able to put down. In the end, your heart will go out to a heartless teen. I certainly cannot wait for the sequel.
Born of Illusion The character of Marguerite Van Housen, Anna's fake-medium mother who has put her through so much in life, first grates on readers' nerves and only seems to get worse as the novel goes on. Needing your child to break you out of police custody or jail? Putting her in charge of your finances at age twelve? Horrible! Their relationship as mother and daughter is fraught with distrust, anger, and resentment, but despite all the problems they have with one another, they still love one another and Marguerite is still a person. It's only toward the end of the novel that we get a good sense of just how human she is with the help of Jacques, her manager.
Bad Monkey Bad Monkey is the latest offering in a long line from author and journalist Carl Hiaasen, and speaking subjectively, this one does not disappoint. The familiar South Florida locations are there, and with some interesting alternative Caribbean localities added in as a slight change of pace. It's not easy to offer a good synopsis without dropping a few spoilers, as this book offers so much occurring in a typical Hiaasen fashion that will quickly be recognizable to readers of his previous tales
Ashen Winter My feelings were invested in all their decision making. The pacing was fast and action packed! I was glued to every page, nothing was slow or left me bored. It was seriously like BAM! This happened BAM! That happened, BAM! Twists and turns were everywhere... this is a book I couldn’t put down, which hasn’t happened to me in a while. If you’re looking for thrills, action, romance and suspense all packed into one book, this book is for you!
Arrowland Even the spirits of his beloved Sherwood Forest aid him, sending him dreams to guide his path. But now Robert's dreams are threatening and strange - a dragon rising over Wales, a spider crouching over Edinburgh - and new foes are rising against him in his own homeland.
An Outlaw in Wonderland Fantastic book! Lori Austin knows how to write a captivating story. She gives all the details, which allows the reader to put herself into the story, and knows exactly what's going on and why. This is the second book in this series. Book 1 was great! This one, book 2, was amazing!!! Never a dull moment! I can't wait for the next book in this series :) Thank you Lori Austin, you continue to keep us coming back for more.
A Whole Nother Story Mr. Cheeseman, his three relatively odor-free children, a psychic hairless dog, and a sock puppet named Steve are on the run. Why? Because Mr. Cheeseman invented a time machine, of course. Now they're being chased by international super spies, top secret government agents, and a genius monkey. Dr. Cuthbert Soup, the head of the Center of Unsolicited Advice, narrates this wild adventure that will lead readers straight into next season's sequel: Another Whole Nother Story.
Wish On her 16th birthday, Sydney discovers she's not going crazy like the women in her family seem to do, but that she's becoming a Witch. With actual powers. Now Sydney has to figure out how to use her new powers quickly in order to save her mom from being trapped in a magical Institute. All while dealing with the guy she's secretly crushing on, who may or may not be after her powers too.
Where Love Finds You If you enjoy books like The Notebook, this is the book for you. From beginning to end it's a page turner. The characters live and breathe, and feel like real people. I was drawn through the book effortlessly. I loved it and look forward to book two.
We are Here It should have been the greatest day of David's life. A trip to New York, wife by his side, to visit his new publisher. Finally, after years of lonely struggle it looks as though the gods of fate are on his side. But on the way back to Penn station, a chance encounter changes all of that. David bumps into a man who covertly follows him and, just before he boards the train, passes by him close enough to whisper: 'Remember me.' When the stranger turns up in his home town, David begins to understand that this man wants something from him...something very personal that he may have no choice but to surrender.
Treecat Wars On pioneer planet Sphinx, ruined lands and the approach of winter force the now Landless Clan to seek new territory. They have one big problem there’s nowhere to go. Worse, their efforts to find a new home awaken the enmity of the closest treecat clan a stronger group who’s not giving up a single branch without a fight
The Tudor Plot: A Cotton Malone Novella Steve never fails to deliver and his deviations from history, like his research into history are taut and truly humming with deviousness. The man has a mind of a master plotter. Machiavellian in depth and scope.
The Tailor For those that have read book 1, this is definitely a nice companion piece and will give you insight into Genya's character.
The Space Merchants Mitch Courtenay is an executive copywriter with Fowler Schocken, an advertising agency that has been given the task of selling the notion of colonizing Venus, an environmental hell-hole, to an over-populated and environmentally stressed earth. Courtenay, born with a proverbial silver spoon in his mouth and unaccustomed to anything but a pampered lifestyle is attacked by a deadly corporate conspiracy, robbed of his identity and imprisoned in an impoverished third world environment, the very existence of which came as a complete shock to him.
The Price of Faith (Book 3 of The Ties that Bind) A well planned and executed story - that is, all three books. Inventive and down-to-earth, this was an engaging and enjoyable read. Yes, it could use some editing, mainly missing words. But nothing that distracting.
The King's Deception: A Novel (Cotton Malone) The author builds his plot around actual historical facts and places. As usual, he has done his homework and accurately describes the places and historical events. One actually gets the feeling reading the book that one is really in those places described. One of the reasons I enjoy Berry's writing. Many of the places used in the book are ones that I have visited myself and can actually picture in my mind's eye exactly what he describes.
The Improper Life of Bezellia Grove I absolutely loved this book. The author was spot on with her writing about the life of the people in the South during the 50's and 60's. I was transported back to my teenage years and felt like I was reliving the past. I highly recommend this novel.
The Importance of Being Married Jessica Wild isn’t big on commitment. But after inheriting millions from Grace, a sweet old lady she met in her grandmother’s nursing home, the situation seems to have changed. To put an end to the many questions about her nonexistent love life, Jess had led Grace to believe she had a boyfriend-turned-fiance-turned-husband: her glamorous boss, Anthony Milton. But Jess’s fantasy to keep Grace happy has backfired–Grace has passed away and left her fortune not to Jessica Wild but to Mrs. Jessica Milton.
The Heresy Within (Book 1 of The Ties that Bind) The first few chapters are traumatic! I do not normally read anything as dark as this, however this author dives straight in where lesser beings fear to tread! From the first page his main character starts to wrestle with moral dilemmas. This is a theme not just through this book but throughout the trilogy, yet never does the book slow in pace or give a hint of bias...it simply states it as it is in the living of the characters lives.
The Good Fairies of New York Needless to say I recommend you read this out loud with someone you love. Failing that, try not to race through it because a book like this comes around once in a lifetime and the first reading should be savored.
The End: A Post Apocalyptic Novel Well written. I appreciate the way the characters we're developed. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
The Colour of Vengeance (Book 2 of The Ties that Bind) The Color Of Vengeance is not simply a revenge saga, no more than The Lies of Locke Lamora is simply a story of thieves. It's much more than that and possibly the best fantasy book I've read so far in 2013. Don't take my word for it and start reading this series to see why I think Rob J. Hayes is the next fantastic Brit addition to the field of dark, gritty fantasy and another Indie gem after last year's Anthony Ryan.
The Butt When Tom Brodzinksi flicks his last cigarette out of his hotel window, he inadvertently sets off a chain of events that threaten to upset the tenuous balance of peace in a not-too-distant dystopian land…A profoundly disturbing allegory, The Butt reveals the heart of a distinctly modern darkness.
The Burning Air Following THE POISON TREE and THE DARK ROSE, Erin Kelly's latest literary coup d'eclat disguised as a psychological thriller ratchets up tension to equal that of a cable-stayed bridge. If you read only one book this year, make it THE BURNING AIR, which is likely to earn Kelly a Pulitzer nomination.
The Damned The dialogue on political power struggles, a light shining in the dark, people standing up for what's right no matter the cost, an all-star cast with their own depth different but the same.
The Carbon Murder: A Periodic Table Mystery This mystery involves "buckyballs", horses, research, computer ID chips and of course murder or murders. As if Gloria doesn't have enough to cope with, throw in cancer, friends in danger and a spiteful lover's sister. If you really like cozies, this is highly recommended!
The Arrivals This is a wonderful debut novel depicting modern family life and problems, bringing a family together to cope, learning responsibility and forgiveness and how to survive life today in this fast-paced world.
Terminus I would recommend this book for any fan of paranormal fantasy. While there are some religious undertones, Mr. Graham is never the type to beat one over the head with proselytizing. For an age group I'd say ages mid teen to adults due mainly to subject matter and some of the storylines. It seems that Mr. Graham left the door open for more stories within this world, and I for one look forward to it with eager anticipation.
Stroke of Midnight I love Olivia Drake 's books. I'm a huge regency era fan. This book was a good read. Loved the characters. Surprised who the villain was. Can't wait for the next book.
Stolen When Abby Henshaw is brutally attacked by two strangers in the countryside, her first thought is for the safety of her baby daughter, Beth. But what follows is a mother’s worst nightmare: Beth is gone and Abby's world collapses around her. As DI Michael Gardner begins to investigate Abby and her family, he discovers lives built on secrets and betrayals. Under pressure from his bosses to find the missing child and to unearth the truth, Gardner finds himself struggling to stay emotionally removed from the case, and from Abby herself. After the authorities finally shelve their investigation, Abby receives a message telling her where she can find her daughter. But how can she convince those around her that the girl really is Beth when they are the very people she knows least? A gripping and haunting debut, Stolen is a richly imagined psychological thriller from an exciting new talent in crime writing.
Steadfast Lionel Hawkins is a magician whose act is only partially sleight of hand. The rest is real magic. He’s an Elemental Magician with the power to persuade the Elementals of Air to help him create amazing illusions. It doesn’t take long
before his assistant, acrobat Katie Langford, notices that he’s no ordinary magician and for Lionel to discover that she’s no ordinary acrobat, but rather an untrained and unawakened Fire Magician. She’s also on the run from her murderous and vengeful brute of a husband. But can she harness her magic in time to stop her husband from achieving his deadly goal?
Independent People The book is pervaded by a strong spiritual tone. Bjartur for most of the book represents a position of independence and utter skepticism, but at key moments he does things not fully consistent with his stated beliefs. The book is framed by old Icelandic pagan legends and by spirits who are said to continue to haunt Bjartur's farm. We see various Christian ministers who in general are satirized in the course of the novel. But I was most impressed with the following erudite, and well-taken reference to Zoroastrianism, the religion of good and evil, which is alluded to many times during the course of the book and frames its story. In a moment of irony, Laxness puts the following speech early on, at Bjartur's first wedding, into the mouth of the bailiff's wife.
In Darkest Depths (Wilderness, #56) A book filled with mystery, strength of character, scenes of excitement and life and death situations, humorous banter, wonder, and beautifully written descriptions of the wilderness...and its weather. Not to mention the emotionally charged moments of coming eye to eye with the creature.
Foul Play at the Fair (A Celebration Bay Mystery) A nice level of detail about Liv's job and the setting was woven into the story without slowing the pacing. The suspense came from Liv's worry about losing her job and from some scenes involving potential physical danger. The characters were interesting, and their motives were always clear. While they came across as realistic, we didn't get to know the characters (beyond the heroine) very well. Only the bumbling and super-arrogant out-of-town detectives came across as cliche.
Somebody Tell Aunt Tillie She's Dead So very well written! I enjoyed every moment of it, even when things got a little dicey towards the end. Just as everything in our heroine's LA life is closing in around her, a gift from the grave comes to her rescue...or does it? Our poor heroine is so very haunted that she can't tell from one moment to the next what is real.
Supernatural Devices This book is a fun read, and Gow's story line moves rapidly holding your interest hostage with the twists and turns. Although the men in Scarlett's life imply that they would like to be intimate with her, Scarlett only kisses them. This is my first foray into the steampunk genre, and I was completely surprised at how much I enjoyed Gow's book. I would recommend this book to teens, or anyone, who enjoy vampires, mysteries, or love stories because Supernatural Devices is all that.
Sounds Like Crazy A wonderful, well-written story that tells us how far our minds will go to inhibit trauma and holding on to master everyday tasks. I found the story very moving. The main character Holly has to face life with 5 distinct personalities in her head. (The committee) ruling her day-to-day decisions. What happend to Holly in the past? What caused these interlopers to take residence in her head? The book is well-developed, from laughing out loud to teas - the book was very unpredictable. 5 stars for sure!
Shadowbrook: A Novel of Love, War, and the Birth of America I could not put Shadowbrook down. I hope she continues to author entrancing books such as this I will be a lifelong reader if she does. She has managed to turn my eye away from historical fiction set in Europe toward that set in America.
Shadow Rising (An Otherworld Novel) Ms. Galenorn does it once again with a fast-paced book which manages to include plenty of plot development where a few things get solved but plenty is left to continue the story, the characters are believable and ones you can really care about even with their flaws, and leaves you anxiously pacing the house cursing that the next one is still a few months away. I absolutely love this series and it just seems to get better with each book.
Sex, Drugs, Ratt & Roll: My Life in Rock I was very interested to see what SEP said about the other members of RATT, and I found him to be complimentary about them and especially their musical talent. He was obviously open about the feuds, and every fan knows he and Bobby has some personal stuff between them. However, there is no slanderous insults by any means.
Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives I thoroughly enjoyed reading Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives! Josie Brown weaves a clever tale of what goes on in upscale suburbia! The characters seem so realistic. You find yourself eager to turn the page to see what happens next. It's so easy to get absorbed into this story. Josie Brown is a really good writer and a does a wonderful job with this book! I highly recommend this read!
Pray for the Dying The killing was an expert hit. Three shots through the head, as the lights dimmed at a celebrity concert in Glasgow. A most public crime, and Edinburgh Chief Constable Bob Skinner is right in the centre of the storm, as it breaks over the Strathclyde force. The shooters are dead too, killed at the scene. But who sent them?
Postcards from Nam Postcards from Nam is a captivating story and gives a very interesting picture of Vietnamese culture. Uyen Nicole Duong's writing is precise, clear, and easy to read. I highly recommend the book.
One Tiny Lie It contained many not so innocent parts that will have your stomach getting all gooey with impure thoughts. This is a fabulous book by a fabulous author. I would highly recommend this book.
No-One Ever Has Sex On A Tuesday: A Very Funny Romantic Novel This truly is an hilarious read. The wit and humor had me laughing out loud. I had planned to save the book to read when relaxing in the sun (waiting for that Summer that I knew was soon to arrive) but I read the first page (she had me at mashed potato) and that was it, all plans for the day went out of the window and I just lapped up the book. Tracy takes you down memory lane encountering situations that make you hold your breath and recall times you loved and times you'd rather forget! With musical references to sounds from the past its a great book to get lost in. A perfect holiday read.
Never End: A Chief Inspector Erik Winter Novel Edwardson's nicely paced novel chronicles the arduous, dispiriting measures that the police go through while dealing with their own personal conflicts. He rightly devotes a more than adequate effort in character developement which adds reality to his plot
My Butterfly This is one of the best love stories I have ever read. Will's POV was just what I needed. If you are looking for a great love story then this is the one. Just be sure to have tissues handy. It will make you smile, laugh and cry. Thank you Laura Miller for such an awesome book!
Me and Mr Jones Three charming brothers, which would you choose?
May We Be Forgiven Most families have some type of dysfunction in them and Harold's family has plenty. However, who would not care for a sick brother or sick mother? Who would not care for the other characters that come into Harold's life. I think Homes has a good insight into our lives and it shows in this good book.
Magic Dreams: A Penguin Special from Ace "Magic Dreams" is set in the same world even the same city as Ilona Andrews' glorious Kate Daniels' series, but the focus is on a character we haven't seen before. And Dali is a refreshingly realistic heroine: despite being a rare white weretiger, she's nerdy, puny and not very intimidating. And unlike most UF heroines, she uses her brains rather than brawn.
Looking for Me The characters breathed their existence onto the pages, showing me who they were and helping to reveal who Teddi was. While Beth is as good as ever at writing setting, it is the people of Looking for Me who had me turning page after page, not wanting to stop. As I read, I was reminded of the work of two of my favorite authors of women's fiction: Marisa de los Santos and Joshilyn Jackson. I can only hope that we don't have to wait another three years for Beth's next story.
Little Girl Gone Through the love of a dog and the curiosity of a 12 year-old boy Medora starts to question her life and the choices she has made. She now sees that beyond not being her guardian angel Willis may in fact be the exact opposite. How do you escape from the hell that is your life if you have nowhere to go and feel there is no one who cares about you? For Medora she may have someone that is missing her, and there is someone who wants to help her escape. The question going through her mind is after all these years does she even remember her name.
Kneading to Die (Pawsitively Organic Mysteries)
The mystery itself kept me interested and kept me guessing. I wasn't able to guess correctly who the murderer was ahead of time. I enjoyed the romantic interest and hope that continues in future books in the series. I hope no "romantic triangles" develop in the series because I find that distracting but I like the way the author has things moving in this first book in the series.
Karlology: What I've Learnt So Far You have to be open minded and have a good sense of humor to buy this book. I bought this book as a gift for my b/f, but I actually started reading it myself and its one of those books that you read when you want to have a good laugh. I listen to Ricky Gervais podcasts on and off and Karl is basically the person that adds the comedy to the show. If you're one that gets easily offended or don't like dry humor, I would not recommend this book. The tone of the book can sometimes sound like a man-child writing in his journal. This is a very nice short read for humor.
Irreparably Broken Aside from the amazing co-characters, I got to read about Tori and Brady. Both are in love with each other but neither one wants to admit to it. I do not want to go into too much detail about them and what they go through. I will tell you this though, when they do finally give in, IT'S HOT! Now as much as I love Tug, anyone who knows me will tell you if the guy is tattooed and/or pierced, I am soo there. Brady is most definitely that, and with his green eyes, holy hotness. Although, his stubbornness and need to keep everyone arm's length because of his secrets, drives Tori to look at a different more stable suitor. Who she chooses well, you have to find out.
Forever, Interrupted Elsie Porter is an average twentysomething and yet what happens to her is anything but ordinary. On a rainy New Year’s Day, she heads out to pick up a pizza for one. She isn’t expecting to see anyone else in the shop, much less the adorable and charming Ben Ross. Their chemistry is instant and electric. Ben cannot even wait twenty-four hours before asking to see her again. Within weeks, the two are head over heels in love. By May, they’ve eloped.
Fearsome Journeys: The New Solaris Book of Fantasy A brand new series briging you Fantasy stories from some of the biggest and most exciting names in the genre! The authors appearing in the launch volume include Trudi Canavan, Elizabeth Bear, Daniel Abraham, Kate Elliott, Saladin Ahmed, Glen Cook, Scott Lynch, Ellen Klages, Ellen Kushner & Ysabeau Wilce, Jeffrey Ford, Robert Redick and KJ Parker.
Father Knows Death (Stay at Home Dad Mysteries)
Mr. Allen has a great sense of humor which adds to the stories, he is a great voice for his daughter and his wife and with a new baby in the picture, I am looking forward to a new addition that he will be able to play with. I used to read a lot of cozies and just became a little bored, cooks, bakers, librarians, the genre was getting stale. I am so glad I found Mr. Allen. The books may be quick, quiet reads compared to a lot of the thrillers and mysteries I read, but they are never boring, they always make me laugh, and I always find myself wishing they were a longer!
Family (Firstborn) I think I enjoyed it because finally Dayne got to connect with some of his family, his relationship with Katy stregnthed and went to a new level and his relationship with the Lord only got stronger. Be sure to have a hankerchief on hand for some touching but happy moments.
Extinction: A Thriller Most readers of techno-thrillers aren't concerned about a little clumsy exposition. Most are looking for some smart, speculative science buried in a propulsive plot. They're looking for a glimpse of that old Crichton magic. And they just might find it in Extinction.
Every Trick in the Book (A Novel Idea Mystery) The characters are superb and Lila's new hire could prove to very interesting in the next editions. The rest of the agents at Novel Idea Literary are starting to gel. Lila's son Trey's path is changing. Lila is getting settled in her cottage after a little moving day drama and her relationship with Sean, the policeman, is moving forward even as he wishes she would just stay out of his cases.
Endure (The Protector Book 4) Endure is full of action. Something is going down at every turn of the page. Whether it's the gang fighting some demons on another dimension or figuring out how Chase needs to become the PROTECTOR, this book does not disappoint in action. I wasn't a fan of Vincent at first. He started to get under my skin in Release but he completely dived under it in Endure and I can honestly say I have a place in my heart for the opinionated vampire. Tiki became a force to be reckon with. He's everything Chase needed at the moment he needed courage. He also gave one of the best pep talks I've ever read, I want to share it with you, but it's quite long so instead when you read this book and come to location 6013 this is what I'm talking about. You'll know it when you see it.
Encounter with Tiber
The novel leaves the reader wanting more, as Clio(an astronaut traveling in the late 21st Century) discovers that her journey is just beginning. It leaves room for a sequel, which depending on your attitude towards the story is good or bad. I enjoyed this rich novel, and recommend this for anyone who really wants to know why we should try to go to Mars.
Eden's Warriors: Volume Four of the Distant Eden Series I loved this book and enjoyed the characters immensely, and not just because I am a native born Texan. If you have been reading this series, buy this one and rejoice. If not, shame on you. Go read the first three books, then read Eden's Warriors. Go ahead, we'll wait.
Dreams of the Dead (Nina Reilly) The unexpected but realistic twists to this Nina Reilly thriller make for a powerful tale as Nina recalls what her then boyfriend prosecutor said when she defended Jim that. He believed the man was a psychopath who will go after her and her family if he is convicted. She believes he is back in Tahoe while her "protector" Paul von Wagoner knows someone stalks his former lover. Dreams of the Dead is a super thrilling twister.
Dream Spinner Scandal has always seemed to follow dark and enigmatic Kent Deverall, Duke of Radcliffe and the tragic, mysterious death of his young wife only added fuel to the flames of gossip. But spirited and beautiful debutante, Juliet Carelton sees something in the Duke of Radcliffe’s eyes a dark intensity that calls to her impetuous nature.
Defiance Stephanie Tyler did such an amazing job taking our minds and submersing them into this futuristic yet archaic world. She did it with such intricate detailing that we could not help but live this story step by step with the characters from start to finish. I can without a doubt say this is the best book I've read this year. As readers we are constantly hoping that the time we spend reading a story is worth the price of a book or more importantly the time we put into it. We are here to tell you this book is worth it, we haven't been this excited about a book together in a long time. It was brilliantly written and the story gets better and better the more you read. It's one you don't put down until the very end.
Dark Studies (Arcaneology)
I read Dark Studies in about a day. I love supernatural romance, especially books with vampires and plucky heroines, and this book left me feeling like a child at the dessert buffet. I will say that it was more explicit than what I usually read, but I liked it better that way. I won't give away any of the plot, just say that Dark Studies is pretty twisty.
Darius & Twig The world has a way of grounding the soaring ambitions of our youth and, in Myers' Harlem, it's even worse. Everywhere you look you find broken families, gang violence, misguided values, and vicious cycles of poverty, apathy, and anger. Yet somehow, this is also the world of two hopeful teenagers, Darius and Twig, who both dream of getting out.
Criminal Enterprise (A Stevens and Windermere Novel) This book is a pretty good FBI/bank robbery procedural. I like the team of Stevens and Windermere, in the first book they tackled kidnappers and seem to make a pretty good team. Despite the book being 406 pages it was a pretty quick read. The writing is easy to read and get into. Anyone who likes these FBI procedurals should definitely give it a try. The author is working on the 3rd and 4th Stevens and Windermere books already.
Close Knit Killer (A Knitting Mystery) Sefton wonderfully ends up the story by setting up the next book. I wouldn't even be surprised if there isn't another romance blooming in the next book.
Casino Infernale: A Secret Histories Novel So full of snark it could be cut with a chainsaw, yet it has a huge heart. Green always has that incredible mix of hope and sarcasm that only a Brit can bring.
Carniepunk: Parlor Tricks Good short story and you can't beat the free price. The inclusion of a page or three from other authors was confusing to say the least. Initially, I thought it was a download error.
Blood Guilt (Book One of the Blood Hunters Series) I really enjoyed this new book in the world previously created and liked getting to know more about this previously introduced characters. It was also fun to get to see other characters from the previous series and see what they are up to now. It helps to satisfy my curiosity because I always want to know what happens to them next.
Black Mamba Boy I could have used a foldout map and a glossary to help with comprehension, but terms that I needed to know could be figured out in context. Situations feel real because they are based upon the life of the author's father. This may be more of an adult book that YA but an interested teen could enjoy this book. It would be good to suggest to someone who has read and enjoyed The Kite Runner, Three Cups of Tea or Purple Hibiscus.
An Ideal Wife With another humorous yet earnest nod to Oscar Wilde (see The Importance of Being Married), the third Wild Affair is another zany jocular tale that is fun to read. A madcap comedic series of misunderstandings lead Jess to go over the top of Big Ben in order to keep Max with her. Although the plot is thin and ideal is not what one would describe Jess as, fans will enjoy her latest wildly insane exploits.
A Wild Affair This was a fun read and I was sorry when it was over. I am hoping that Townley chooses to continue this series as I have come to find myself attached to these characters and I want to know more about their lives. But please, in the next one - give us back the old Jess from the first book.
A Bat in the Belfry: A Home Repair Is Homicide Mystery Jake doesn't get knocked out! others do, but I'm glad the heroine was only in semi-danger this go around. Terrific!
Joyland (Hard Case Crime) Over the years, I've loved some books more than others, but the Dark Tower series were really what convinced me that he could do no wrong. But after his accident had taken its toll and a string of books read somewhat uninspired and formulaic, I figured his best work was behind him. I was a little sad, of course, but grateful for all the entertainment and inspiration I found through his previous books. Besides, everyone has to lose their mojo eventually, right?

Don't Go Back to School: A Handbook for Learning Anything
2013 | 214 Pages | ISBN: 0988949008 | PDF | 1 MB Here is a radical truth: school doesn’t have a monopoly on learning. More and more people are passing on traditional education and college degrees. Instead they’re getting the knowledge, training, and inspiration they need outside of the classroom. Drawing on extensive research and talking to over 100 independent learners, Kio Stark offers the ultimate guide to learning without school. Don’t Go Back to School tells you how to learn what you need to learn in order to do what you need to do, without having to bend your life or your finances to fit into traditional schooling. This inspiring and practical guide provides concrete strategies and resources for getting started as an independent learner. Don’t Go Back to School is essential reading if you’re considering traditional higher education-and if you’re ready to become an independent learner. Praise for Don't Go Back to School "You don't need school for that! This is not a book about an easy path, but a book about a path that works. If you want to learn, go learn. But you don't need school for that." Seth Godin, author, Stop Stealing Dreams "Don't Go Back to School makes good on the advice offered on the cover. It is a brisk, useful guide to learning what you need to learn without having to finish college, or go to grad school. Kio Stark has interviewed a roster of amazing, self-taught talents about how they did it, and distilled those observations into an essential guide." Clay Shirky, NYU Professor, author, Here Comes Everybody and Cognitive Surplus “Not going to graduate school felt like a failure at the time, but wound up being the best choice I ever made. It set me out on a path of self-learning and discovery that led me to work I love, work that would've never flown in an academic setting. How I wish I'd had Kio's book as a guide to help me along the way!” -Austin Kleon, author, Steal Like an Artist

Raising a Self-Reliant Child: A Back-to-Basics Parenting Plan from Birth to Age 6 English | 2013 | 246 Pages | ISBN: 1607743507 | EPUB | 6 MB With this practical guide, parents can end daily power struggles with their preschoolers, toddlers, and infants and create more time for the family to spend on things that matter by encouraging early childhood independence skills. We’ve all heard the news about helicopter parents and boomerang children—but how can parents safeguard against these trends when our children’s lives are increasingly scheduled and competitive? Pediatrician Dr. Alanna Levine offers a commonsense parenting approach that avoids divisive strategies and helps parents find a balanced ground between overindulgence and strict control. Raising a Self-Reliant Child focuses on teachable moments where parents can instill independence, such as sleep time, toilet training, mealtime, and playtime. With Dr. Levine’s practical strategies and techniques, young children learn to take responsibility for their daily routines: babies learn to sleep through the night, toddlers learn to nap without their parents stretched out alongside, and school-age children learn to dress themselves and make breakfast with little parental intervention. Overprotection and micromanagement keep young children from the self-development that comes naturally from learning and doing on one’s own. And children who don’t learn independence skills at an appropriate age grow into adults who expect others to fix challenges and conflicts for them. Dr. Levine helps you break the cycle of daily power struggles so that you and your family will have more time to focus on the things that really matter.

Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life: A Book by and for the Fanatics Among Us ISBN: 1400066204 | 2010 | EPUB | 240 pages | 2 MB Drooling fanatic, n. 1. One who drools in the presence of beloved rock stars. 2. Any of a genus of rock-and-roll wannabes/geeks who walk around with songs constantly ringing in their ears, own more than 3,000 albums, and fall in love with at least one record per week. With a life that’s spanned the phonographic era and the digital age, Steve Almond lives to Rawk. Like you, he’s secretly longed to live the life of a rock star, complete with insane talent, famous friends, and hotel rooms to be trashed. Also like you, he’s content (sort of) to live the life of a rabid fan, one who has converted his unrequited desires into a (sort of) noble obsession. Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life traces Almond’s passion from his earliest (and most wretched) rock criticism to his eventual discovery of a music-crazed soul mate and their subsequent production of two little superfans. Along the way, Almond reflects on the delusional power of songs, the awkward mating habits of drooling fanatics, and why Depression Songs actually make us feel so much better. The book also includes: • sometimes drunken interviews with America’s finest songwriters • a recap of the author’s terrifying visit to Graceland while stoned • a vigorous and credibility-shattering endorsement of Styx’s Paradise Theater • recommendations you will often choose to ignore • a reluctant exegesis of the Toto song “Africa” • obnoxious lists sure to piss off rock critics

Alone on the Ice: The Greatest Survival Story in the History of Exploration ISBN: 0393240169 | 2013 | EPUB | 368 pages | 3 MB His two companions dead, food and supplies vanished in a crevasse, Douglas Mawson was still one hundred miles from camp. On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Douglas Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp. The dogs were gone. Now Mawson himself plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface. Mawson was sometimes reduced to crawling, and one night he discovered that the soles of his feet had completely detached from the flesh beneath. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizably skeletal, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, “Which one are you?” This thrilling and almost unbelievable account establishes Mawson in his rightful place as one of the greatest polar explorers and expedition leaders. It is illustrated by a trove of Frank Hurley’s famous Antarctic photographs, many never before published in the United States. 24 pages of illustrations
The Black World of UFOs: Exempt from Disclosure ISBN: 097664262X | 2010 | EPUB | 196 pages | 3 MB About the sources. Since the initial publications of the book the FBI has done an outstanding job along with prior Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in threatening or silencing those same sources who then try to discredit the work being done here (mentally ill is a favorite term used by government CI) but, that can't silence the Presidents like Reagan or as... President Obama said recently to Will Smith's son Jaden in May 2012, 'The aliens, right? ‌ OK, I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of extraterrestrials but I can tell you if there had been a top secret meeting and if there would have had to have been a discussion about it, it would have taken place in this room.' Neither confirm nor deny? Within Intelligence circles that says the President was, 'read in.' The Black World, Core of a Cover-up
X Descending ISBN: n/a, ASIN: B007LSDHQ8 | 2012 | EPUB | 310 pages | 2 MB Two startling films and the facts behind them reveal, once and for all, the existence of an incredible technology behind the UFO phenomenon. As no other book has ever done, X-Descending documents how private study of an unpublished daylight, multiwitness UFO movie, filmed by veteran UFO researcher Ray Stanford, resulted in a major aerospace propulsion breakthrough. Until now, no book could show that aerospace propulsion science has directly benefited from studying a UFO movie. Author Christian Lambright not only does that, he provides an in-depth documentation of how it has occurred. Lambright doesn't stop there. He goes on to open up the mysterious Paul Bennewitz case with startlingly detailed, hitherto unpublished color film-frame images clearly revealing that whatever objects Bennewitz saw and filmed within the Manzano Weapon Storage Area at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., they are exotic, technological, and nothing with which, even today, we are familiar. Included in the account of the early experiences of Paul Bennewitz is a serious examination of the counterintelligence effort to suppress the evidence of what he had seen and filmed. This book names names.
Ufos In Reality: Programmed Aerospace Monitors Of Our Species ISBN: 1456771590 | 2011 | EPUB | 312 pages | 2 MB This book is the serious work of a professional aerospace engineer. It shares profound discoveries made during 40+ years of objective research, about the nature of UFOs, especially those with craft-like characteristics. It covers virtually all aspects of the phenomenon, including those stories of close encounters with alien creatures and of time-loss and claimed abductions by the witnesses. Within these pages you will discover that genuine sightings and encounters are shown to have been in accordance with (now identified) ages-old programmes, referencing the sun and selected stars. This predictable system seems to have been set up, aeons ago, to facilitate long-term monitoring of our species by fully automated craft, some of which could be operating routinely, without occupants, from the outer fringes of our solar system. The technology being used is currently beyond us - but why should we expect it to be otherwise? It is revealed that several alien species seem to be co-operating and generally following the same rules of engagement with this planet. The UFO phenomenon is now shown to be a serious matter, requiring the full attention of scientists and, indeed, of everyone living on this planet. This book demonstrates that we humans seem to live in a wider reality than we are programmed, naturally, to experience from birth. The visiting craft seem to operate in that wider reality and have the ability to open the minds of selected individuals, enabling those people to share that enhanced state of consciousness with them. Why not judge that for yourself after you have considered the testable evidence now being revealed by this mind-expanding book? Herein you will discover facts that, almost certainly, have been withheld by official investigators since the end of WWII.
Inside Animal Minds: The New Science of Animal Intelligence eISBN: 1426210035, ASIN: B007SGYIXO | 2012 | EPUB | 55 pages | 4 MB The Animal Intelligence Bundle: “Minds of Their Own” by Virginia Morell (March 2008) “Almost Human” by Mary Roach (April 2008) “The Genius of Swarms” by Peter Miller (July 2007) In “Minds of Their Own,” Virginia Morell provides an overview of the science of animal intelligence. She introduces you to an African gray parrot named Alex, a bonobo named Kanzi, and a border collie named Betsy. Each of these animals tells us something interesting about the way they perceive and manipulate their world. The article also looks at what scientists are learning about the intelligence of dolphins and crows, beyond mere communication. In “Almost Human,” Mary Roach takes us to the savannahs of Senegal to meet a group of 34 chimpanzees, whose behavior and social structures have given scientists some important clues about the nature of their communication and intelligence. In “The Genius of Swarms,” Peter Miller looks at the collective behavior of ants, bees, and other insects for what they can tell us about social organization and how sometimes intelligence lies outside of the individual brain. This article served as the basis for his book, The Smart Swarm: How Understanding Flocks, Schools, and Colonies Can Make Us Better at Communicating, Decision Making, and Getting Things Done.
The Secret Life of Trees ISBN: 0713996986, 0141012935 | 2006 | EPUB | 452 pages | 4 MB What is a tree? As this celebration of the trees shows, they are our countryside; our ancestors descended from them; they gave us air to breathe. Yet while the stories of trees are as plentiful as leaves in a forest, they are rarely told. Here, Colin Tudge travels from his own back garden round the world to explore the beauty, variety and ingenuity of trees everywhere: from how they live so long to how they talk to each other and why they came to exist in the first place. Lyrical and evocative, this book will make everyone fall in love with the trees around them.
Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan: Eyewitness Accounts of the Occupations
ISBN: 1931859655 | 2008 | EPUB | 240 pages | 1 MB “The only way this war is going to end is if the American people truly understand what we have done in their name.”— Kelly Dougherty, executive director of Iraq Veterans Against the War In spring 2008, inspired by the Vietnam-era Winter Soldier hearings, Iraq Veterans Against the War gathered veterans to expose war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. Here are the powerful words, images, and documents of this historic gathering, which show the reality of life in Afghanistan and Iraq. Iraq Veterans Against the War argues that well-publicized incidents of American brutality like the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the massacre of an entire family of Iraqis in the town of Haditha are not the isolated incidents perpetrated by “a few bad apples,” as many politicians and military leaders have claimed. They are part of a pattern, the group says, of “an increasingly bloody occupation.” "Here is the war as it should be reported, seeing the pain, refusing to sanitize an unprovoked attack that has killed over one million people. All over America are victims who have returned from this conflict with hideous wounds -wounds that turn the lives of the entire family upside down. And the American people are not seeing this. Until now. "Winter Soldier, an enormously important project of Iraq Veterans Against the War, cuts this debacle to the bone, exposing details hard to come by and even harder to believe. This is must reading for patriots who have already begun the effort to insure that this never happens again." --Phil Donahue "Winter Soldier makes us feel the pain and despair endured by those who serve in a military stretched to the breaking point by stop-loss policies, multiple combat tours, and a war where the goals and the enemies keep shifting ... [and] also make[s] us admire the unbreakable idealism and hope of those men and women who still believe that by speaking out they can make things better both for themselves and for those who come after them."--San Francisco Chronicle Formed in the aftermath of the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) was founded in 2004 to give those who have served in the military since September 11, 2001, a way to come together and speak out against an unjust, illegal, and unwinnable war. Today, IVAW has over seven hundred members in forty-nine states, Washington, DC, Canada, and on military bases overseas. Aaron Glantz is an independent journalist who has covered the Iraq War from the front lines. He is the author of How America Lost Iraq (Tarcher) and a forthcoming book on the Iraq War from the University of California Press. Anthony Swofford is the author of Jarhead: A Marine’s Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles.
Coconut Oil Cures ISBN: 1481886290 | 2013 | EPUB | 64 pages | 478 KB There are an incredible number of benefits to using coconut oil in everyday life. The moment I realized this, my life underwent a small revolution. Now, not a day goes by in my own family when we aren’t using it for a myriad of reasons. From minor infections to serious diseases, coconut oil cures it all. It does this in a completely delicious way, too! Coconut oil is one dose of “medicine” no one in your family will hesitate to take, especially once they’ve learned about the good it’s doing them. Throughout this book, I’m going to open your eyes to these benefits. Let’s begin with the basics. We know about some of the benefits from studying Pacific Islanders, for whom using coconut oil is a way of life. Research shows that the studied islanders were completely devoid of issues such as kidney disease, high cholesterol, and obesity – issues we have come to accept as only being cured by pharmaceuticals. Yet regular consumption of coconut oil has shown that in fact the opposite is true. It’s easy to eat and digest coconut oil. In fact, ingesting coconut oil can be very cleansing to the colon. Coconut oil also helps to dissolve and remove toxins from the body. This helps those who ingest it to maintain ideal and healthy weights. It’s no secret that many people in our culture have an overgrowth of yeast in their bodies, which leads to many health issues. Coconut oil is a natural anti-yeast treatment, thanks to some of its natural acids. It can kill fungi and yeasts that cause ringworm, athlete's foot, thrush, and diaper rash. Several people with Candida yeast infections have reported all over the internet how coconut oil has turned the tables on the infection. (Not to mention it’s one of the more affordable treatments on the market.) In addition to being a powerful yeast-killer, coconut oil is also an antibacterial agent. Whether we’re talking minor maladies or intense infections, none of it stands a chance against the MCFA in coconut oil. Studies have shown that coconut oil can successfully overpower viruses that cause influenza, herpes, measles, hepatitis C, SARS, and AIDS – and more. It also kills bacteria that cause afflictions like ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, gum disease and cavities, pneumonia, and gonorrhea. And did I mention that it also kills tapeworms, lice, giardia, and other parasites? If this is all sounding too good to be true, just run a quick internet search – and you’ll see that coconut oil really is just about as perfect as it gets. You can eat it raw, or you can use it in cooking. It’ll soften your skin and hair, and it can fight yeast and bacteria better than any antibiotic on the shelf. Even if you take just a few tablespoons a day, it’ll still be one of the best things you can do for your health. And this is just the beginning of all the things I can teach you. Keep reading, and let’s get into the more advanced aspects of coconut oil. To Your Health, Sharon Daniels

Papa Spy: A True Story of Love, Wartime Espionage in Madrid, and the Treachery of the Cambridge Spies ISBN: 1408803097, 0802717969 | 2009 | MOBI | 416 pages | 6 MB In the 1930s Tom Burns was a rising star of British publishing, whose friends and authors included G. K. Chesterton, Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, the artist Eric Gill and the poet David Jones. And among his glittering social circle he had set his heart on the beautiful Ann Bowes-Lyon, cousin of the Queen. When war was declared in 1939, Burns joined the Ministry of Information, effectively the propaganda wing of the secret services. Sent to Madrid as press attached at the British Embassy, where the Ambassador was the formidable and very Protestant Sir Samuel Hoare, Burns used his faith and his deep love of Spain in the propaganda war against the Nazis, who at the time had pretty much unrestricted access to the Spanish media. Burns' brief was to do all in his power to keep Franco neutral and so protect Gibraltar and access to the western Mediterranean. The strategy was simple, but the tactics were more complicated, especially when Burns found he had begun to make enemies at home, not least among them Kim Philby and Anthony Blunt, head of the MI6's Iberian section. By 1941 he felt far from the real fighting, Ann had pledged herself to another man, and Burns was spending as much time protecting his back as fighting the Nazis. How he overcame these odds, was involved in the Man Who Never Was decoy plot, arranged Leslie Howard's fatal propaganda trip to Portugal and Spain, and finally found true love while loyally serving his country is the story told in this extraordinary book by his son.

Deployed: How Reservists Bear the Burden of Iraq English | 2008 | ISBN: 047205029X | PDF | 216 pages | 9,9 MB What is it like to be one of the citizen-soldiers summoned to duty in Iraq and Afghanistan? The events of 9/11 were a call to arms for many reservists, as shock, anger, and fear propelled large numbers to volunteer for the opportunity to serve their country in the Middle East. Even the most patriotic, however, had not expected that the wars would last so long or that the Army Reserve would supply so much of the manpower. Using the soldiers' own voices, Deployed draws upon the life stories of members of an Army Reserve MP Company, who were called to extraordinary service after September 11. The book explores how and why they joined the Army Reserve, how they dealt with the seismic changes in their lives during and after deployment, the evolution of their relationships inside and outside their military unit, and their perspectives on the U.S. Army. Musheno and Ross uncover five pathways that led these citizens to join the reserves, showing how basic needs and cultural idioms combined to stimulate enlistments. Whatever path led to enlistment, the authors find that citizensoldiers fall into three distinct categories: adaptive reservists who adjust quickly to the huge changes in their lives abroad and at home, struggling reservists whose troubles are more a product of homegrown circumstances than experiences specific to serving in a war zone, and reservists who are dismissive of military life while they live it and
oppose the war even as they fight it. Perhaps most important, Deployed challenges the prevailing stereotype of returning soldiers as war-damaged citizens. "Deployed is an important and deeply moving book. Here, in this story, the heroic tradition of the American citizensoldier lives on." ---Andrew J. Bacevich, Professor, Boston University, and author of The New American Militarism: How Americans Are Seduced by War "Whatever your feelings about Iraq, Deployed is an important and compelling work that illuminates the real human cost of the war, and gives voice to those compelled to fight it." ---Ken Wells, Senior Editor, CondĂŠ Nast Portfolio "Currently, there are few to no books dealing with the sociology of Iraq, and even fewer have empirical data on the experiences of American soldiers. More important, this work provides a strong and needed voice for soldiers---their words are compelling, rich, and moving." ---Morten Ender, Professor of Sociology, United States Military Academy at West Point "This is a unique book that weaves historical, ethnographic, and organizational approaches for a study of Iraq-War military reservists. . . . the authors' findings challenge the pervading wisdom on reservists' motivations for service; the chemistry between family, reserve duty, and relations with regular military; and the effect that service in Iraq had on them." ---Jerry Lembcke, Associate Professor of Sociology, Holy Cross College
