You Are Mine I would definitely recommend this story to all fantasy lovers, as well as all YA fans. It's a brand new story from a brand new author, filled with refreshing and exciting new ideas. This is one debut novel you don't want to miss because I'm positive the future of writing is bright for Janeal Falor.
What Dies Inside: An Inspector Carlyle Novella London, October 1984: Irish terrorists have blown up British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in a hotel near London. Gerry Durkan, the prime suspect, is on the run in west London and Constable John Carlyle is drafted in to join the hunt to find him.
We are Made of Stardust - Peaches Monroe #1 To start with I was laugh my buns off there is so much fun in the pages that you get carried away. I really can't wait for book 2 I need it like yesterday.. I fell in love with both dalton and peaches. You will definitely fall in love with this book and want book 2 just as bad. You have comedy, love, drama and sex what more can you ask for..
Two of a Kind The town of Fool's Gold is the site of unity, family, healing and strength. I enjoy the story lines with the military aspect in the the most. I don't think people realize the difficulty that these men and women have adjusting back into our everyday world after the things they've had to endure. The message of healing old wounds an learning to open your broken heart to the possibility of love and family was heartwarming and refreshing.
The Taming of Ryder Cavanaugh (Cynster Sisters) This is a long book, over 400 pages, but it is a can't-put-down read. In the first half of the book we see Ryder's attempts to woo a totally Not-having-any Mary. But bit by bit Ryder makes in roads until Mary is swept up in the inevitable understanding that just perhaps she has found the hero she is looking for. Many books would stop right here but there is evil a foot and Ryder and Mary are the targets. This becomes a very exciting, action filled novel along with the very hot and very sexy romance. The Epilogue gives us a look at the many other Cynsters we have come to love.
The Shadow Tracer Sarah and Zoe are on the run. Everyone is looking for them. The police, the FBI, and Zoe's father's family who want Zoe and will kill anyone that gets in their way. Sarah doesn't have anyone to turn to. Except.....would he help her? She last saw him five years ago when she killed a man in the woods and he told her to run. She makes the call and things go spiraling out of control. Meg Gardiner originally hails from Santa, Barbara California but now lives in London. She has ten other books that include the Jo Beckett series and the Evan Delaney series. The Shadow Tracer was fantastic page-turner.
The Newcomer (Thunder Point) Robyn Carr writes books that make you feel like you are coming home. Heartwarming, sincere, real characters that become friends from the moment you open the pages of her books. Emotionally captivated to every up and down in the character's lives, The Newcomer is a journey of love, heartache and growth. Brilliant writing Robyn Carr, you captured the soul of a small Oregon town and poured it into this fabulous book for us to share.
The Miss Education of Dr. Exeter This latest installment of Paranormal Investigator does not disappoint. While searching for Phaeton Black with a very pregnant America Jones, Dr. Exeter and Mia's story unfolds with Paris, France as the back drop. Exeter and Mia have some real challenges to face with their relationship. But admist the dangers in the search for Phaeton, these two have sweet and highly sexually charged moments. To steal a line from the Sound of Music, "How do you solve a problem like Mia," in this case? This books answers that question beautifully.
The Innocent All and all, I found The Innocent to be a very successful entertainment. More like this, please, Mr. Baldacci! And I'm left pondering who among the characters really was the eponymous "innocent" of the title.
The House Swap Vanessa hopes she and John will reconnect once they take a break from their hectic city life and get away from John’s band. Things get off to a great start for them as they settle into Brian’s gorgeous oceanfront home, but when John runs into his favorite rock star on a night out, he becomes obsessed with becoming a famous musician all over again.
The History Keepers: Circus Maximus The second instalment of the internationally acclaimed series which follows the adventures of Jake Djones and the extraordinary secret service that protects the true course of history . . .
The Good Thief's Guide to Venice: A Mystery I love this book even though it sounded like a first novel and I am willing to forgive that when the story is captivating. This is a captivating story in the solid English tradition set by Christie and Sayers. The characters are developed and the plot twists are perfectly timed. The main character, Charlie, is a very charming and likeable man. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
The Game Changer Thank you for writing this book! I loved the insight to their story. All I can say is more please!!!! What a roller coaster ride that was and you drew me right in!!
The First Imperium: Crimson Worlds IV It is a rollicking adventure in outer space. Not much deep thought, just good action from the beginning to end. I would have enjoyed learning about the new enemy and their motivation, but I have a feeling that will come later...
The Favor Underlying all of the events in the present are the secrets of the past. Flashbacks to pivotal moments from Janelle and Gabe's relationship provide insight into both characters and vague hints of coming events. Excellent foreshadowing gives readers a good idea of what might have occurred but Ms. Hart has a few unexpected plot twists up her sleeve. And the favor that sets in motion the unstoppable and tragic chain of events that changes everyone's lives? It is kept tightly under wraps for much of the novel but it is well worth the wait as it ties all of the various threads of the plot together in a very dramatic and spellbinding ending.
The Eye of God: A Sigma Force Novel I honestly don't know how long James Rollins can possibly come up with these convoluted tales he spins. Surely he's written about every single interesting thing in the universe by now? But apparently not. As long as he keeps writing them, I'm going to keep reading them!
The Blood Bride (Blood Secrets) I loved this book, once I started I couldn't put it down. I love vampires and thoroughly enjoyed Imogene's unique twist on the genre. There's lots of detail, Imogene's love of research shining through, which adds another level to the story. I can't wait for book 2 in this series!
Tell Me A fabulous read.... A fragile line between professional and personal lives is being balanced here by the two main characters. Both in the business of investigating, uncovering......one very constrained by rules and regulations, the other.......not so much. Great tension/respect between Nikki and Reed. As for the storyline....a delicious, sultry build up of a mystery, with a twisted finale!!!
Star Trek: Enterprise: Rise of the Federation: A Choice of Futures When a new threat emerges from a force so alien and hostile that negotiation seems impossible, a group of unaligned worlds asks Starfleet to come to its defense, and the Federation’s leaders seize the opportunity to build their
reputation as an interstellar power. But Archer fears the conflict is building toward an unnecessary war, potentially taking the young nation down a path it was never meant to follow. Archer and his allies strive to find a better solution . . . but old foes are working secretly to sabotage their efforts and ensure that the great experiment called the Federation comes to a quick and bloody end.
Slingshot: A Spycatcher Novel I recommend this series, with the qualification that readers understand the steep curve of writing quality. The second book is much better than the first, and the third is much better than the second. Plus, this seems to be an exponential rather than linear improvement.
Shadows (The Rephaim) It's almost a year since Gaby Winters watched her twin brother die. In the sunshine of a new town her body has healed, but her grief is raw and constant. It doesn't help that every night in her dreams she fights and kills hell-beasts. And then Rafa comes to town. Not only does he look exactly like the guy who's been appearing in Gaby's dreams, he tells her things about her brother and her life that cannot be true, things that are dangerous. Who is Rafa? Who are the Rephaim? And who is Gaby? The truth lies in the shadows of her nightmares.
Shadow Rider: Blood Sky at Morning This book, which serves as my introduction to Jory Sherman, reads like a detective story out of the old west. I mean that in the best sense. The writing style throughout this books shines beyond nearly every Western I've ever read. I don't know why I didn't notice this auther before (since he's been writing for years), but he's amazing. Descriptive language in the book such as "The Colt bucked in his hand as it exploded with orange flame, belching out golden fireflies of burnt powder..." paint pictures like few Westerns. Though I haven't yet reached the last page of the story, I had to say what a rare work of fiction this is. I will most definitely begin reading other works by this author.
Ruby Redfort Take Your Last Breath This book is worth a read, but is not as BRILLIANT as the first book. The beginning is quite good but the book keeps getting better as you read. Some things in this book are a bit unrealistic and strange but overall it was really good!
Real Wifeys: Get Money: An Urban Tale This story kept me on the edge of my seat. This book is about Luscious and her life with her rapper boyfriend. She has deep rooted issues from her childhood that come out after the drama with her boyfriend. Will she dust herself off and keep it moving? Or will she make everyone pay for what they have done to her.
Lost Souls (A Caitlyn O'Connell Novel) The story is solid with a fairly icky demon antagonist. There were times when the descriptions of the scenes got to me. Right? Not the sex but the dead bodies. I know!
Lip Lock (Country Fever) From the moment he spots the blonde bombshell in the small-town Reedy, Wyoming, grocery store, Brant Foxfire can’t help but check her out all the way to the checkout line. He always hoped he’d see her again, but never thought it’d be this way with her young son in his orthodontist chair for a consultation. It’s not the boy’s overbite that captures his attention. It’s the single mom’s mouth. Her luscious lips…and that one charmingly off-kilter tooth.
Killing Them Softly He did it again. I am also a big fan of Roy Glenn, I love all his books and like the reviewer before me stated you won't be disappointed. All I can say about this book is you will not want to put it down. Good job Mr. Glenn, keep them coming.
Killer Ambition (A Rachel Knight Novel) Once again, Marcia Clark has taken us into the life of Rachel Knight with this amazingly written and action packed story. Only someone like Marcia Clark who has such an in depth knowledge and insight into the legal realm could bring us stories of such depth and with such life like characters, that by the time you have read the book, you feel like you know them!
Kat Fight This book is full of wonderful characters but my favorite by far has to be Adam. He was so funny and someone I would love to have as a friend. I think I laughed out loud at his antics and witty one liners as much as I did at Kat's (which earned me many funny looks from friends, strangers and family members along the way).
It Happened One Midnight: Pennyroyal Green Series Overall, another solid winner from Julie Anne Long in a very strong historical romance series. This story could easily be read on its own but it will make you anxious to read previous ones and new ones yet to come. Wit, charm, true love, heat, family with a deeper undertone that is sure to touch your heart, It Happened One Midnight is sure to please historical romance fans!
Invisible (Smith High) It was refreshing to read a YA that is on the lighter side and can make me laugh, but still manages to pack an emotional punch with well-developed story lines and character struggles.
In the After In the After is a page-turning dystopian thriller with a compelling heroine. The bond Amy and Baby form is strong, yet tender and I was hoping for a great outcome for them both. A romance is alluded to for Amy but it doesn't really go anywhere, so if you're looking for the cookie cutter love triangle, you won't find it here. The world building is riveting, the pace fast and the plot tense and hopeful. I can't wait for the next one!!
Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles, Book Six) Hunted was really good. It has plenty of twists and turns that will drive you crazy. There are several WTF moments throughout the book. Seriously, I almost threw my iPad across the room on several occasions.
Home Invasion I highly recommend this book as a fast-paced and thought-provoking read, which is one in a series.
Hissers Loved this book. The characters were great and I loved the fast pace of it. If only they made horror movies this good nowadays. Also liked how the zombies were different from normal zombies. Almost like monsters at times, and how the kids were so good at fighting them but still being kids. I plan to read more by Ryan Thomas. Great book!
Hide and Seek The story itself seems rather simple and conventional: two young men and two young women go to an abandoned house out in the woods of Maine in order to play a game of adult hide and seek the house has long been the subject of gossip and rumors but it cannot really be characterized as haunted. The idea for this seemingly foolish pursuit comes from Casey, a complicated, fascinating female character. Her constant shows of bravado and risk-taking bother our protagonist yet he never refuses her requests. The first half of the novel establishes Casey's character and background pretty well, so the context of the game makes sense to the reader. When the gang arrive at midnight and commence their game, this novel quickly shifts into overdrive. Having to follow our protagonist around this creepy house in the dark, searching for the hiding places of his friends, got this reader's blood pumping a little harder, but the increasingly scary nature of the game is actually no more than a prelude of the horror to come.
Hidden (Avena) Thane and the angels were great secondary characters. While we spend very little time with some of them, I still found it easy to like and build interest in them. There isn't much romantic interlude here, but what little there is, I did enjoy. And there's an action packed battle that had my heart pounding in my chest.
Forged in Steele (A KGI Novel) Loved the storyline, it felt natural except maybe a little rushed. It was fairly predictable what was going to happen. Its good to see a different side of Steele and have his back story. Maren can handle Steele, and is an interesting and strong character on her own.
Fling: A BDSM Erotica Anthology This book is classified as a BDSM romance however, I found the BDSM to be tolerable and not over the top 'Yikes' so this sound be a pleasant read for all. Is this a great book? Yes. Would I recommend it to my friends? Absolutely! Do I wish I was on that island? *Grins* Welcome to Fetish Week!
Faith In either case, Faith is a science fiction debut of the highest order. It has fascinating, well-rounded characters who will remain with you for a long time. It has gorgeous, understated prose. It is chock-full of tension, making it a compulsive page-turner. It has an intriguing fictional universe which, I hope, will host more novels in the future. It's got one of the highest signal-to-noise ratios I've encountered in a long time, which, if you think about it, is really something, given that the vast majority of it describes one long, protracted battle. Faith is a novel I maybe would have expected from the mind of Iain M. Banks and if that isn't a compliment for an SF debut, I don't know what is. What I do know is that it's only early January, and I'm already sure that this novel will end up on my list of 2012 favorites.
Exposed (Tracers) I highly recommend Exposed, and its six predecessors in the Tracers series, to any reader who genuinely enjoys Romantic Suspense, that is, a balance between the two genres.
Exclusive This fast paced treasure from Sandra Brown delivers us into the secretive world of politics. Barrie Travis, a news boadcaster, is privy to information of the death of the First Lady's infant son. And is twisted into doing the story, the whole story. Between the mania of the press, the sleazy political characters, the mental health of the First Lady & Barrie's own tangles with her bosses, this is an intriguing plot that is plausible & very bold.
Dreamless (Starcrossed) First 50 Pages: There is an odd phenomenon going on with writers lately. For some reason, there are a lot of books coming out that have main characters that are possibly related falling in love with each other. If you have read Starcrossed, then you know that Helen and Lucas believe they might be cousins, even though the math doesn't really add up properly, and as the reader, YOU KNOW that it isn't true. This was the most frustrating aspect of both books, because it continues into Dreamless, this odd guessing game. I'm not going to tell you if this pseudo-mystery gets resolved in this book. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't...but it is extremely annoying all the same. Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system before I continued with my review because other than the whole inbreeding thing, I really liked this book. Characters & Plot: Poor Helen in Dreamless looks like she is wasting away. She is so thin, completely drained from all of her nights spent in hell, quite literally. The poor thing is so stressed out and it has begun to take its toll on Helen physically and mentally. Helen also still believes that the love of her life is her cousin, which is also taking a toll on her and her relationship with Lucas. Neither Helen or Lucas wants to loose what they have together, but how can they continue to be a couple when the world feels like it is wrong for them to love each other the way that they do?
Dragons of the Watch Even though I reminded myself of this, I was caught up in the story and found myself feeling a genuine concern and worry for Ellie, Bealomondore, and the other characters. I fell in love with the book, and especially with Ellie. She just might be my favorite character yet out of Mrs. Paul's books that I've read. I may not have her patience nor her purity of character, but there are so many other character traits that I identify with.
Dragon's Ring Dave Freer always impresses me with his ability to find ways to twist common elements of SF/F and make them his own. I can't think of another author that could make a protagonist who is intent on bringing Armageddon a sympathetic, and entertaining character, certainly not with so few words spent in doing so. The story revolves around Fionn and Meb and we get to watch them learn a bit from each other as they go about getting Fionns plan to fall into place.
Dragons of the Valley Dragons of the Valley begins and ends with bursting excitement. Even without The Vanishing Sculptor as a prior guide, the story stands solidly on its on merit. Paul succeeds where so many have failed before her. The middle book in her Chiril series pulsates with enthusiasm and energy, avoiding the sophomore slump many authors embrace unintentionally. Valley delivers subtle undertones of Spiritual instruction, guaranteed to please both the devoted follower of Christ as well as the non-believer in need of His Word. This book is a must read for any and every fan of fantasy fiction. Without giving too much of the story away, the adventure centers again on Tipper, Bealomondore, and Prince Jayrus and their adventures in the realm of Chiril. Together, they must join with the dragons of the valley to overcome the ultimate test.
Deviant While on some levels, it was hard for me to connect with these characters, the underlying internal struggles are somewhat familiar to all of us, even in the best of circumstances. The struggle to figure out who you are and who or what you are really fighting against are universal. While others may have viewed this story as very dark, I saw that there was a message of hope buried within the pages. This is one that I think all teenagers should read. If they were to take absolutely nothing else from the story, they would gain a new perspective on things. I know I have.
Dance of the Red Death
Ms. Griffin has given us very memorable characters and a beautiful (and scary) world in two novels and a novella. This novel tied up many plots and every character plays a role in trying to redeem or destroy the city. Araby evolves from a girl that wanted to dress up and get high everyday to a girl that would risk everything to save the world.
Covet There was always something going on in Covet. It starts with what happens to Savannah's grandmother and the action and plot just doesn't really stop until the end of the book. Oh, the end of the book! I was flipping the pages on my Nook just as fast as I could for the last twenty pages or so. I absolutely cannot wait until next year to find out what happens next. I have a feeling that the next book is going to be just as great as Crave and Covet were.
Confessions of an Almost-Girlfriend Rose really grew into herself in this book though and a big part of that was learning how to control her anger and finding things she was good at like singing. As much as I love Jamie, and believe me I do, I'm still missing that connection with him that makes me feel like he's perfect for Rose. Sure they had some sweet moments, but ultimately he didn't treat her the way she should be treated.
Choices I got to read this book before it was released. I loved it! The book is so well written that I lost myself in the story. I experienced all the emotions that Quincy did. The lust and longing, the uncertainty between what she wants and what is actually best for her, and the pain and guilt she suffers through (I don't want to give anything away). Once you start reading its hard to put down and if you are like me it will leave you wanting more. A must read!
Caged Warrior: Dragon Kings Book One The greatest drawback of the story is the lack of necessary background to help me fully understand these warriors and the challenges they face: What's the story behind the origin and powers of the Dragon Kings? Why are Dragon Kings affiliating with human crime organizations? Is it always by choice or are they forced into it like Audrey? How exactly does Dr. Aster "help" Dragon Kings with their fertility problems? I hope the author will flesh out more of this fantasy world she has created to make the read more enjoyable.
Beneath the Surface A big fan of Roy Glenn novels and this is just another one I enjoyed a great read!!! Pick it up
After Daybreak: A Darkness Before Dawn Novel I could not put it down! Lots of action and romance.I loved the way Victor developed in this last book, almost human but not totally. Michael and Teagan as great friends of Dawn, all the new characters... it could give material for more books. Very good plot, just the final battle was kind of rushed. I wanted to see more of the new order.
A Thousand Lies The good and evil twists and turns kept me hooked with one surprise after another. This is a definite "must-read" by Sharon Sala. You will not be disappointed.
A Kiss of Blood: A Vamp City Novel If the darker elements in A Blood Seduction turned you off, you should give the series another try by reading A Kiss of Blood. I think you would agree that by the end, you'll be wanting more of Arturo and Vamp City.
A Hero to Come Home To This is the first in Ms Pappano's Tallgrass series and I'm impatiently looking forward to finding out how the other cast of characters deal with their circumstances. This book will give you faith in the human spirit and how life can beat you down but not take you out.

Why Love Hurts: A Sociological Explanation 2013 | ISBN-10: 0745671071, 0745661521 | 304 pages | PDF | 3,8 MB Few of us have been spared the agonies of intimate relationships. They come in many shapes: loving a man or a woman who will not commit to us, being heartbroken when we're abandoned by a lover, engaging in Sisyphean internet searches, coming back lonely from bars, parties, or blind dates, feeling bored in a relationship that is so much less than we had envisaged - these are only some of the ways in which the search for love is a difficult and often painful experience. Despite the widespread and almost collective character of these experiences, our culture insists they are the result of faulty or insufficiently mature psyches. For many, the Freudian idea that the family designs the pattern of an individual's erotic career has been the main explanation for why and how we fail to find or sustain love. Psychoanalysis and popular psychology have succeeded spectacularly in convincing us that individuals bear responsibility for the misery of their romantic and erotic lives. The purpose of this book is to change our way of thinking about what is wrong in modern relationships. The problem is not dysfunctional childhoods or insufficiently selfaware psyches, but rather the institutional forces shaping how we love. The argument of this book is that the modern romantic experience is shaped by a fundamental transformation in the ecology and architecture of romantic choice. The samples from which men and women choose a partner, the modes of evaluating prospective partners, the very importance of choice and autonomy and what people imagine to be the spectrum of their choices: all these aspects of choice have transformed the very core of the will, how we want a partner, the sense of worth bestowed by relationships, and the organization of desire. This book does to love what Marx did to commodities: it shows that it is shaped by social relations and institutions and that it circulates in a marketplace of unequal actors.

Only four men in American history have been promoted to the five-star rank of Admiral of the Fleet: William Leahy, Ernest King, Chester Nimitz, and William Halsey. These four men were the best and the brightest the navy produced, and together they led the U.S. navy to victory in World War II, establishing the United States as the world's greatest fleet. In THE ADMIRALS, award-winning historian Walter R. Borneman tells their story in full detail for the first time. Drawing upon journals, ship logs, and other primary sources, he brings an incredible historical moment to life, showing us how the four admirals revolutionized naval warfare forever with submarines and aircraft carriers, and how these men-who were both friends and rivals-worked together to ensure that the Axis fleets lay destroyed on the ocean floor at the end of World War II.
The Saga of the Volsungs: The Norse Epic of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer ISBN: 0520066839, 0140447385 | 1999 | EPUB | 160 pages | 2 MB One of the great books of world literature--an unforgettable tale of jealousy, unrequited love, greed, and vengeance. Based on Viking Age poems and composed in thirteenth-century Iceland, The Saga of the Volsungs combines mythology, legend, and sheer human drama in telling of the heroic deeds of Sigurd the dragon slayer, who acquires runic knowledge from one of Odin's Valkyries. Yet the saga is set in a very human world, incorporating oral memories of the fourth and fifth centuries, when Attila the Hun and other warriors fought on the northern frontiers of the Roman empire. In his illuminating Introduction Jesse L. Byock links the historical Huns, Burgundians, and Goths with the extraordinary events of this Icelandic saga. With its ill-fated Rhinegold, the sword reforged, and the magic ring of power, the saga resembles the Nibelungenlied and has been a primary source for such fantasy writers as J. R. R. Tolkien and for Richard Wagner's Ring cycle.

Cracked: Why Psychiatry is Doing more Harm than Good
2013 | 332 Pages | ISBN: 1848315562 | PDF | 3 MB An expose of the current state of psychiatry that reveals how the pursuit of pharmaceutical riches has compromised the patients' wellbeing. In an effort to enlighten a new generation about its growing reliance on psychiatry, this illuminating volume investigates why psychiatry has become the fastest-growing medical field in history; why psychiatric drugs are now more widely prescribed than ever before; and why psychiatry, without solid scientific justification, keeps expanding the number of mental disorders it believes to exist. This revealing volume shows that these issues can be explained by one startling fact: in recent decades psychiatry has become so motivated by power that it has put the pursuit of pharmaceutical riches above its patients’ well being. Readers will be shocked and dismayed to discover that psychiatry, in the name of helping others, has actually been helping itself. In a style reminiscent of Ben Goldacre’s Bad Science and investigative in tone, James Davies reveals psychiatry’s hidden failings and how the field of study must change if it is to ever win back its patients’ trust.

The Girl Who Loved Camellias: The Life and Legend of Marie Duplessis ISBN: 0307270793 | 2013 | MOBI | 304 pages | 5 MB
From the author of Nureyev, the definitive biography of the celebrated Russian dancer, now comes the astonishing and unknown story of Marie Duplessis, the courtesan who inspired Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel and play La dame aux camelias, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata, George Cukor’s film Camille, and Frederick Ashton’s ballet Marguerite and Armand. Sarah Bernhardt, Eleonora Duse, Greta Garbo, Isabelle Huppert, Maria Callas, Anna Netrebko, and Margot Fonteyn are just a few of the celebrated actors, singers, and dancers who have portrayed her. Drawing on new research, Julie Kavanagh brilliantly re-creates the short, intense, and passionate life of the tall, pale, slender girl who at thirteen fled her brute of a father and Normandy to go to Paris, where she would become one of the grand courtesans of the 1840s. France’s national treasure, Alexandre Dumas pere, was intrigued by her, his son became her lover, and Franz Liszt, too, fell under her spell. Quick to adapt an aristocratic mien, with elegant clothes, a coach, and a grand apartment, she entertained a salon of dandies, writers, and artists. Fascinating to both men and women, Marie, with her stylish outfits and signature camellias, was always a subject of great interest at the opera or at the Cafe de Paris, where she sat at the table of the director of the Paris Opera, along with the director of the Theatre Varietes, the infamous dancer Lola Montez, and others. Her early death at age twenty-three from tuberculosis created an outpouring of sympathy, noted by Charles Dickens, who wrote in February 1847: “For several days all questions political, artistic, commercial have been abandoned by the papers. Everything is erased in the face of an incident which is far more important, the romantic death of one of the glories of the demi-monde, the beautiful, the famous Marie Duplessis.” With The Girl Who Loved Camellias, Kavanagh has written a compelling and poignant life of a nineteenth-century muse whose independent and modern spirit has timeless appeal.
The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics ISBN: 067002581X | 2013 | MOBI | 416 pages | 11 MB For readers of Laura Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit and Unbroken, the dramatic story of the American rowing team that stunned the world at Hitler's 1936 Berlin Olympics Daniel James Brown’s robust book tells the story of the University of Washington’s 1936 eight-oar crew and their epic quest for an Olympic gold medal, a team that transformed the sport and grabbed the attention of millions of Americans. The sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the boys defeated elite rivals first from eastern and British universities and finally the German crew rowing for Adolf Hitler in the Olympic games in Berlin, 1936. The emotional heart of the story lies with one rower, Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not for glory, but to regain his shattered self-regard and to find a place he can call home. The crew is assembled by an enigmatic coach and mentored by a visionary, eccentric British boat builder, but it is their trust in each other that makes them a victorious team. They remind the country of what can be done when everyone quite literally pulls together—a perfect melding of commitment, determination, and optimism.
Drawing on the boys’ own diaries and journals, their photos and memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, The Boys in the Boat is an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate story of nine working-class boys from the American west who, in the depths of the Great Depression, showed the world what true grit really meant. It will appeal to readers of Erik Larson, Timothy Egan, James Bradley, and David Halberstam's The Amateurs.
