Watch Me Disappear WATCH ME DISAPPEAR is an awesome read, both for YA readers and adults. Lizzie is a complex young woman with whom many readers, young and old, will identify. The issues in the novel are timeless - belonging versus standing out, accepting yourself, learning to deal with conflict, negotiating difficult and complex relationships - but presented in a thoroughly modern context. Parents will find that it can serve as an enthralling read and the impetus for rich discussion with pre-teens/tweens, and older readers will at once feel nostalgic for "simpler times," utterly heartbroken for the unique challenges faced by the characters, and totally relieved to no longer be a teenagers negotiating the difficult teenage landscape.
Watch Over Me Watch Over Me is story about long and difficult journey of learning to enjoy your life and live it to the fullest even though things are not always ideal or going the way we wish. Watch Over Me is about fulfilling your dreams and letting go of the darkness that consumes you.
When She Was Gone Linsey disappears from her home at 26 Sycamore Street one late summer morning just days before she's supposed to leave for college at Cornell. The people who live in the homes surrounding hers in the New Jersey neighborhood all
have a story to tell. One or two saw her leave. One found the note she left after it fluttered away out of the mailbox. One heard her discussions with her boyfriend in the weeks leading up to her disappearance.
Whistling Past the Graveyard In the summer of 1963, nine-year-old spitfire Starla Claudelle runs away from her strict grandmother’s Mississippi home. Starla hasn’t seen her momma since she was three—that’s when Lulu left for Nashville to become a famous singer. Starla’s daddy works on an oil rig in the Gulf, so Mamie, with her tsk-tsk sounds and her bitter refrain of “Lord, give me strength,” is the nearest thing to family Starla has. After being put on restriction yet again for her sassy mouth, Starla is caught sneaking out for the Fourth of July parade.
Vampire Island Of all the vampire children, Maddy has the most trouble adapting to the vegan diet, but she''s willing to try some interesting new foods. She drinks hot pomegranate juice every morning, pretending it''s blood. She eats mosquitoes and ticks to get the blood they have taken from others. She also has a keen sense for uncovering and hunting down pureblood vampires. When two move in across the street from the Livingstone''s, she is not about to let them hurt her family. She''s an awful cook, but that doesn''t stop her from making cookies with garlic and holy water. She can also be bossy. She gets Hudson, her younger brother, to dress up as a girl elf scout, and has him sell the special cookies to the vampires. She''s also disappointed that her brother looks better in her elf scout uniform then she does.
Under the Moon (Goddesses Rising, Book 1) Another point I have to mention is that while I have read more about love triangles than I care to admit, and while some I feel get a bit old, this one I enjoyed. It at least for me was very believable and fresh. Quinn, who is conflicted with her needs with Sam and her hidden love for Nick. I honestly don''t blame her with her conflcted emotions for both of these guys, I loved them both myself. What girl wouldn''t love to have two Nice, protective guys to love her. Sign me up :)
Twelve Drummers Drumming: A Mystery The Christmas pair finds life in the village soothing as they heal from their loss. However, at the fair, someone murders the daughter of the choirmaster Sybella Parry's body is found inside a large drum. Although most locals assume drugs were involved in the homicide, Tom thinks otherwise. As he makes inquiries and uses the confessional to gather information, Tom finds several suspects who could easily have killed the teenager. This is an enjoyable English village mystery that stars a fascinating widower who employs a unique way to gather data. The story line starts slow to establish the cast and setting, but once done accelerates into a fast-paced entertaining whodunit with a great surprising final spin.
Troll's-Eye View: A Book of Villainous Tales
Everyone thinks they know the real story behind the villains in fairy tales?but the villains themselves beg to differ. In Troll?s-Eye View, you?ll hear from the Giant?s wife (?Jack and the Beanstalk?), Rumpelstiltskin, the oldest of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, and many more. A stellar lineup of authors, including Garth Nix, Jane Yolen, and Nancy Farmer, makes sure that these old stories do new tricks!
Tight Little Stitches in a Dead Man's Back Wow. I''m not really sure how to rate this book. I don''t want to give it 5 stars, because I can''t say I "loved" a story this dark - but it is so well written, I can''t give it a lower rating.
The Suicide Run: Five Tales of the Marine Corps Styron is a master of metaphor. A character has eyes with irises "like thin blue flakes of splintered glass, twinkly with scorn." Fallen soldiers have "pureed brains." On a more pleasant note, the "afternoon sacrament of ice cream." In a parade on Fifth Avenue in New York, the narrator of "Marriott, the Marine" sees General Douglas MacArthur, just having been removed by President Truman from his post as commander of United Nations and Amerian forces in the Far East. He glances straight at the narrator and "behind the raspberry-tinted sunglasses his eyes appeared as glassily opaque and mysterious as those of an old, sated lion pensively digesting a wildebeest." Finally the same narrator says "Flaubert''s enormous craft, his monkish dedication, his irony, his painstaking regard for the nuances of language all of these commanded my passionate admiration." These very words could be used to describe the genius of Styron, himself.
The Shy Little Kitten This picaresque novella will soften the hardest heart. When a mother cat leads her kittens into the barnyard sunshine, one kitten lingers behind and thus begins her adventures. She takes a walk with a mole through the countryside and the two hap upon a frog whose enormous mouth sends them into gales of laughter. A shaggy puppy then offers to lead the kitten home but not before he busies himself yapping at a squirrel who drops a nut on his nose! Home at last, the kitten joins a barnyard picnic but a bee-stung frog causes a stir and everyone dives into the brook for safety! It isn''t long though before merriment is restored. ''This was the best day ever!'' the little kitten exclaims. Tenggren''s illustrations are lovely and most pleasing. A memorable tale and one the reader will return to time and again.
The Men of Medicine Ridge I enjoyed this book! It is two different stories in one book! The first is about a rich cattle rancher named Mack, and a pretty young woman named Natalie, who is going to be a schoolteacher! At major life changing times, in their life, Mack and Natalie have always been there for each other! But things start to change when Natalie finally becomes old enough for Mack to date, Natalie is a young woman Mack can hardly resist, and Natalie and Mack fall in love! I also enjoyed the second story about a man named Gil, who is part owner of a wealthy cattle ranch, with his brother John. John encourages a pretty young secretary, named Kasie, who is looking for a job, to work for him and his brother Gil. Gil interviews Kasie and gives her the job! Gil''s two little girls really like gentle Kasie! Kasie has secrets in her past, that makes her keep her distance, and Gil doesn''t trust women, because of his past, but he finds it is hard to resist sweet Kasie, who thinks it is a sin to wear her hair down! Gil and Kasie fall in love!
The Julian Game In The Julian Game, a Facebook prank turns into a campaign of online bullying at an all girl''s prep school on the Main Line of Philadelphia. I received an ARC of this book, and before I could read it, my 13 year old daughter disappeared with it drawn by the fascinating cover. Luckily, it didn''t take long to get it back: she finished it in a single afternoon, completely unable to put it down. As a new Facebook user herself, she was sucked into the subject matter and hopefully came away from the book a little wiser.
The Coincidence Engine The book has several protagonists, and each chapter shifts the point of view from one character to another. Slowly, we learn the back story of each character through flashbacks and conversations. I had trouble with this format, as it was difficult to really like or sympathise with anyone until about 2/3 of the way through the book, as we learn about their flaws and weaknesses long before we understand why they act the way they so. So, unlike a previous reviewer, I found the first 2/3 of the book a bit of a slog, and it picked up for me at the end. I felt the hanging ending was totally in tune with the general quirkiness of the story.
The Charmer
I loved it. I couldn''t put it down. Although I thought it ended too abruptly it by no means take away from a very good book.
The Blood of Heaven The book of which this one reminded me the most, and which readers who found this one to their liking would no doubt find even more enriching to read is Mario Vargas Llosa's equally imbrued and brutal work of historical fiction The War of the End of the World. Llosa is a master stylist and Nobel Laureate, and the book is on Harold Bloom's list of must-reads in the Western Canon. It's no small feat for an author so young to write a book that even approaches such a masterpiece.
That Time I Joined the Circus Who Should Read It: I would seriously recommend this book to any fan of contemporary. People who loved Water for Elephants should definitely pick it up. And if you are like me and adore when authors incorporate music into their books, you HAVE to read it. Everyone pay attention to the name J. J. Howards because many more great things will be coming out of her writer's pen.
Sterling (Mageri Series: Book 1) After brutal training sessions and four months have passed Samil decides it is time to claim his Learner. Well let''s just say all hell breaks loose in a battle to save Zoe from Samil who has his own not so kind agenda for his progeny. All in all a very good start to a rather interesting concept for a story. Nice and refreshing to meet a different type of Character/Breed etc. The ending was great. Nice action, lead-ins for what''s to come. As Zoe learns who she is we the reader are on that same exact journey with her.
Spells & Stitches (Knitting Mysteries) This bewitching charmer is filled with humor as it takes a village to raise a baby sorceress. Fast-paced the collision between the MacKensie human horde and the paranormal residents of the Vermont village is jocularly entertaining. However, it is Laria who makes this a fresh tale as she has typical baby needs and some extraordinary extras as Laria has unique ways of "communicating." Although it behooves sub-genre fans to read the previous A Knitting Mystery romantic Green Mountain village fantasies (see Spun by Sorcery) to understand family dynamics, Barbara Bretton provides an engaging tale of parenthood.
Run for Your Life A new killer is on the loose who calls himself the Teacher. He's a chameleon of sorts as he changes his looks between each of his killings. His targets seem to be people who are rude, but he has a much more sinister agenda that doesn't become clear until towards the end. Until then, his killings were a bit random until the Teacher and
Bennett meet on the phone. That's when the killings turn personal. Bennett soon finds himself the next target of a madman.
Ravenwood: A Tanyth Fairport Adventure Nathan Lowell once again delivers top quality story-telling with his own unique touch in this wonderfully entertaining tale. His world-building touch is deft in this first book of the Tanyth Fairport adventures no long, rambling history lessons, just the right amount of scene-setting to whet the appetite for more. As always in Lowell's books, the characters immediately draw the reader into their world Tanyth and the villagers quickly seem like friends and neighbors and the bad guys are a believable blend of menace and denseness. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next Tanyth Fairport adventure.
Questions of Travel Michelle de Kretser's wonderful ideas regarding the meaning of travel. Travel as a tourist, as an escape from evil or personal pain or a quest for something more, is all dealt with here in a very skillful way. Laura, the unloved woman searching for a life, spends years traveling from one country to another and then, finding nothing, settles back into her home country. Here she travels through various relationships in a desperate attempt to find love, life and home. Ravi, the refugee from Sri Lanka travels to escape savagery and enormous grief and finds there is no relief, especially amongst those who, from lack of similar experiences, would never understand.
Prized (The Birthmarked Trilogy) I was a little surprised by Prized. It''''s not the the book was bad at all, but just not what I expected and, frankly, a little out there compared to where the story was going in Birthmarked. I kind of felt like there wasn''''t a great deal of cohesion between the first book and this one, other than the presence of the main character, almost like the plot went off into something else completely -and I think it became somewhat obvious that the author didn''''t originally intend for Birthmarked to be a trilogy. But despite this, I really enjoyed this book. Gaia is a strong character that readers want to see overcome her circumstances and succeed. The setting is even more chilling than in Birthmarked and, most importantly, Prized was filled with unexpected twists and turns that kept me filling pages up until the very end.
Orchard Valley Grooms This was a book split into two parts about sisters finding their future husbands. It begins with three sisters getting the dreadful news that their beloved father is having a major heart attack and needs critical surgery. In this book, the romantic lives of Valerie, and Stephanie are told to us. The fun element is that Daddy, during his clinical death, has a grand talk with his beloved, Grace...the girl''s Mother, and learns not only the persons the girls will marry, but when and how many children they will have.
Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart
Alice Walker has done it again. She has created a deeply rich world full of amazing characters that you hate to leave when the book is finished. Unlike most of her other works, this book has an extremely modern feel to it. It takes place in the present, and although it happens mostly in the jungles, it still feels like home. Kate, the main character inspired by Walker''s grandmother, channels a lot of Walkers feelings about the world today, and growing older. In the past, I''ve always felt the ancestors in Walker''s work, but never much of herself. This book combines the two elements beautifully. Do yourself a favor and big pick up this remarkable book, by one of the greatest voices of our time.
Never Trust a Dead Man I thought this book was fabulous. The characters are fully-realized, and the plot zips right along. My favorite thing about it is the relationship between Selwyn & Farold, who were enemies in life, but grow to be friends after Farold''s death and transformation into a bat. Their banter is hilarious, and I also loved Elswyth, who is probably the smartest, and certainly the most sensible character in the book. Highly recommended for fantasy/mystery fans age 10 and up.
Mixed Signals
In MIXED SIGNALS Liz Curtis Higgs has created a world as delightful as Jan Karon''s Mitford, populated with characters so real I could almost feel their heartbeats. This book is filled with humor, joy, and grace abundant, the kind of story you want to curl up with and have last forever. If I could, I would give this fast-paced, warm and wonderful story six stars!
Limits of Power (Paladin's Legacy) I waited for over a year for Limits of Power to be released, and I am happy to say that it was not only well worth the wait, but also made me even more eager to read the next one! The return of Paks to the storyline was a welcomed readdition to the storyline, and even though you can see a lot of foreshadowing for the next book, it doesn't detract from the storyline as a whole. I just wish I didn't have to wait at least another year for the next one....
Infamous: A Fame Game Novel Loved Infamous- a great end to the Fame Game series, which I loved as much as the LA Candy series. Great, quick, fun reads! Does anyone know if Conrad has more books to come?
Incident On and Off a Mountain Road
The writing here in this story completely puts the reader in the scene. I felt dread, fear, and horror, all mixed together. When he slashed at her, I jerked back. That is just how much I felt part of this story. And when Ellen came across that macabre scene in the woods, it chilled me and made me sick. This short story is horrifying and scary, just one moment of suspense after another. As I finished the story, the author got me with an unexpected twist, a sure jab almost as sharp as that knife, and I loved it. This story is about a thirty to forty-minute read that is very well done, disturbing and gruesome, and full of the type of scenes that stick in your mind and hang tight. I fully expect to have a nightmare about this tonight.
In the Dark Ms. Graham is a very talented author who has returned to her roots as a serial romance author with her latest effort. As a result she has given us another great read that is short and to the point but has great characterization and a fast moving plot that will have readers turning the pages. The suspense portion of this read is great. You are really left to guessing who the killer is out of a cast of several likely suspects. There are enough red herrings thrown out that you are truly left guessing until the final pages. The chemistry between our main characters is great and the fact that they have a past relationship actually only addes to the the push and pull of their new and growing attraction.
Herself The amount of detail, particularly with respect to the political campaigns, really made this feel like a true story in places. When the story begins, Tessa is a speech-writer for a successful and charismatic Congressman, David, that she has been in a secret relationship with for three years. She seemingly has it all, until things start unraveling. When David breaks up with her, Tess crys on the shoulders of her cousin, Imogen, and her best friend, Venus. They convince her to schedule a trip to Ireland to "find herself." When she gets to Ireland she quickly finds Jamie, a fisherman from a large family. She doesn''t want to give up her alone time or use Jamie as her rebound guy and then David shows up in Dublin.
Hammer of Angels: A Novel of Shadowstorm In G. T. Almasi’s thrilling alternate reality, the United States, the USSR, and the Republic of China share a fragile balance of power with Greater Germany, which emerged from World War II in control of Europe and half of the Middle East. To avoid nuclear Armageddon, the four superpowers pursue their ambitions with elite spies known as Levels, who are modified with mechanical and chemical enhancements.
Golgotha Run (Dark Future) Stone also seems to have trouble creating an interesting plot to go with all of the "mad ideas" that he throws into these stories the characters tend to be one-dimensional, the narratives are frequently fragmented, and you get the impression that Stone's more interested in showing you all of these neat ideas than in creating a story. At one point, he even has a character in the story describe the plot of Gologtha Run as a book he's reading, which is a bit of metafiction that's already been done by the Illuminati trilogy. It's not a bad book by any means, but it doesn't live up to the potential that I was hoping for.
Flesh Worn Stone Loved this book. It keeps you wondering from the first page until the end... and then it leaves you wanting to know what happens. I can't wait for the second book to come out!! It really makes you think about what you would do in that same position and how you would survive the game... or if you would want to...
Evil and the Mask The writing is well articulated and clear in its meaning. Even with the impossible plot switchbacks, I felt I was following the author's development of his story. The character development is fascinating. You might find yourself muttering to yourself several times, but that still doesn't change the fact that this is an intriguing little story.
Equilateral Superbly written, the prose is pared back to the bone with every word precisely placed to create an atmospheric, sometimes poetic, and entirely absorbing narrative. Even the geometry becomes magical in this author's gifted hands as the red planet reprises its eternal sci-fi role as a place of mystery and wonder. An unexpected delight.
Envy Olsen uses the historic mill town to great effect, beautiful on the surface with a chilling undercurrent of something creepy about to happen. Olsen takes true crime stories, mixes in equal parts fiction and not a small amount of humor in spite of some dark themes. Just when I thought I knew what direction the story would take it veered off in a completely different direction. The teen detectives, twin sisters Hayley and Taylor are likable, intelligent and fun. I thought that their use of "paranormal" abilities would be creepy, but it was more a gift that they had which was used for good. Having read only one other Gregg Olsen true crime story, I suspect that Envy brings together the best of his writing abilities both factual and fictional. The story is tightly written and moves forward at a quick, even pace. You won''t want to stop reading until the story is told. And you will want to visit the real life Port Gamble. You may even want to paint your fingernails envy green, just for fun.
Diary of a Vampeen The book is clogged with moment-by-moment descriptions of the protagonist''s apparel, with brand name everything from clothes, of course, to stores and transportation and even food. It''s wierd, given the love/happiness/sharing end of the book. But part of what makes it so funny. And we go from teeny-bob passsing notes in class, texting, talking IRL
that sounds almost authentic to these characters, to gobs of stuff that they are supposed to say spontaneously that has clearly been labored over, again and again, the author sweating and digging deep to get it just so horribly wrong.
Day of Vindication Author James Rupe approaches the story from many different sides including, the media coverage, the government reaction, and the FBI investigation. He also divides the story into two parts which was really my only issue with this book. Part two seemed rushed and wasn''t as fully fleshed out as part one. I would have rather seen the book end with part one and have the loose ends tied up in a well-developed sequel. Other than that, Mr. Rupe has painted a terrifying picture of our worst nightmare, a nuclear attack on American soil. Often, it seemed too real and I felt like what I was reading was really a vision into the not-so-distant future if we, as a country, let our guard down. It is a riveting, suspense filled novel that I hope will always remain nothing more than a chilling work of fiction.
Dancing Towards the Blade and Other Stories They are waiting for the boy on his way home, the racist thugs. For Vincent, it is the latest in a string of violent events his family has faced since moving to England.
Creepers Doc Fletcher is striving to engineer a ground cover that is drought resistant. It would be a plant that would work as a creeping ground cover in the desert, with the intentions of eventually reworking the soil into something that could hold vegetation. It looks good on paper, but what happens if you can''t stop the plant from taking over everything?
Bookends Although the heroine of this story was distinctly unlikable in the beginning of the book and made some choices I felt were not actually true to the character as written, Liz did a fairly good job at showing "the new man" God can create when our lives are turned over to him. This love story is multi-layered and heartening and definitely worth the read.
Become: A Novel of Desolation This novel is a refreshing new take on good vs. evil and how choices play out against destiny. The characters are wonderful, deliciously complex, and more than typical stereotypes of good or evil. I love the characterization of Lucifer''s daughter, Desolation. At times she is such a teenager. Other times, she has the strength of her mixed parentage. From the first chapter, I cared about Desolation. The plot moved quickly in waves of seduction, regret, sin, and love. I love the use of Norse mythology to explain the worlds and characters within, as Lucifer = Loki, Asgard = Heaven, Midgard = Earth, etc. I laughed, cried, cared, and loved, and did not want to put this book down.
April Showers I loved this book. It was well thought out and written. Both Isaac and Lukas had a secret that created major twists that left me unable to put the book down so I could find out how the story developed. The dialogue was fantastic! Sarcasm is my favourite type of humour and April Showers is full of sarcastic comments that had me laughing from beginning to end. It was captivating, funny, sweet, realistic, and a truly brilliant debut Novel with an ending that left me desperate for book two. Karli Perrin is definitely an Author to look out for.
Another Little Piece Another Little Piece is a very different book, filled with violence and deception but also intense feeling and mythology. I wasn't sure I was going to like it at first, not because of the storyline itself but because I felt the book initially dragged in the first 50 pages the very slow revealing of the layers of Annaliese had me wanting to skim ahead until the real action was revealed.
After All Brandt is just trying to stay afloat as a single father of two teens—both of which he had when a teen himself. The last thing he’s looking for is to fall in love, but when his new neighbor, Ashley, finds her way into his life, it’s as if they’ve found their missing piece. But Brandt knows he doesn’t deserve this kind of happiness. Not after the way he let his family shatter.
Addicted to You Great book! I couldn't put this book down! Easy read and very intriguing! Can't wait for the next one to see what happens next!
A Turn of Light (Night's Edge) This first fantasy novel by science fiction troubadour Julie Czerneda, A Turn Of Light, slips the reader into complete wonder. Julie has always entertained us in truly immense ways with her stories of far yonder places in science fiction. This one truly shines as a fantasy debut.
A Dash of Magic: A Bliss Novel Together with her long-lost grandpa, his sarcastic talking cat, and a turncoat French mouse, Rose and her brothers race around Paris to find essential and elusive magical ingredients that will help her outbake and outmagic her conniving aunt.
A Corner of White: Book 1 of The Colors of Madeleine Jaclyn has packed this book full of wit, humor, warmth, and completely unique ways of looking at the world and *creating* a world. This is, by far, my favorite book of 2013, in both adult and 'children's' literature. For anyone who is looking for something a bit different, a bit clever, a bit perfect, then I recommend this book tremendously.
A Beautiful Idea Isabelle Clark always had ideas, but that’s all they ever were . . . until now. She grew up in a world filled with poverty and hatred from the person who gave birth to her and had decided she would finally make her ideas a reality. After moving away to college as a junior she ran into the University of Maryland’s walking one-night stand. Literally.
Dear Fatty ISBN: 009951947X | 2009 | EPUB | 374 pages | 2 MB One of the greatest comedy actresses of our time, Dawn French has a career that has spanned nearly three decades, encompassing a vast and brilliant array of characters. Loved for her irreverant humor, she has achieved massive success while pushing boundaries and challenging stereotypes. In this memoir in the form of letters to people in her life, she describes her journey. Beginning her career as part of the groundbreaking alternative comedy group the Comic Strip, she then helped firmly establish a place for women in British comedy with Girls On Top, which teamed Dawn with Jennifer Saunders, Ruby Wax, and Tracy Ullman. As part of the wildly successful and much-loved duo French and Saunders, Dawn helped create a repetoire of brilliantly observed characters, parodying popular culture and impersonating everything from Harry Potter to The Exorcist. How would our habits change if we shed the excess of money, clutter, and food in our lives? In More or Less, readers will learn how to draw a line of "enough" in their consumer choices, how to see generosity as a chance to experience freedom in a greedy world, and how to make small changes now that will help others forever. Being in Balance: 9 Principles for Creating Habits to Match Your Desires (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2006 | 5 hours and 15 mins | ISBN: 1401910718 | MP3 32 kbps | 76 MB In this inspirational work, best-selling author and lecturer Wayne W. Dyer shows you how to restore balance in your life by offering nine principles for realigning your thoughts so that they correspond to your highest desires. Imagine a balance scale with one end weighted down to the ground, and the other end—featuring the objects of your desires—sticking up precariously in the air. This scale is a measurement of your thoughts. To restore the same balance that characterizes everything in our universe, you have to take up the weighty thoughts so that they match up to your desires. The seasons reflect the overall harmony of life. For example, winter passes and the blossoms emerge. This is balanced by a need to have the trees rest, so autumn arrives on time and helps the trees ready themselves for another period of repose. This book is dedicated to the idea that we’re a vital component of this creative process and have within ourselves the wherewithal to create all that we want if we recognize and revise out-of-balance thoughts.

Ernan has pioneered an impressive Voice of Customer process that enables marketers to engage customers on their terms. His book provides readers with a step by step guide for achieving the same levels of success as he has achieved for his impressive list of Fortune clients." -Philip Kotler, S.C. Johnson Distinguished Professor of International Marketing, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University In Voice of the Customer Marketing, Ernan Roman, the award-winning marketing guru who created the IDM (Integrated Direct Marketing) and Opt-in marketing methodologies shows you a proven, step-by-step process for understanding the expectations of your customers and prospects for more effective relationships and deeper levels of value. His first book, Negropedia, is a wide-ranging, deeply idiosyncratic tour through the tricky racial landscape of the Obama era, aimed at pop-culture consumers at the intersecting fan bases of South Park and Chappelle’s Show, Scott Pilgrim and The Boondocks. Whether deconstructing Lil Wayne’s “no homo hypocrisy,” outlining the all-important Clair Huxtable code for finding a mate, or assessing Susan Sontag’s street cred, Evans provides a stream of daring outsider anthropology.

Large mammals never seen before by Western science have popped up frequently in these mountains in the last decade, including a half-goat/half-ox, a deer that barks, and a close relative of the nearly extinct Javan rhino. The result is a race between preservation and destruction. Containing research gathered from famous biologists, conservationists, indigenous peoples, former POWs, ex-Viet Cong, and the first U.S. ambassador to Vietnam since the war's end, Gold Rush in the Jungle goes deep into the valleys, hills, and hollows of Vietnam to explore the research, the international trade in endangered species, the lingering effects of Agent Orange, and the effort of a handful of biologists to save the world's rarest animals.

Shooting the Boh: A Woman's Voyage Down the Wildest River in Borneo ISBN: 0679740104 | 1992 | EPUB | 272 pages | 2 MB Some women seek adventure to test their mettle, suck down jolts of adrenaline, and prove they haven't grown old and indolent. In Shooting the Boh, journalist Tracy Johnston identifies other motivations for joining a group scheduled to raft down a previously uncharted section of the Boh river in Borneo. "I am by nature a passive person who likes excitement; a person with no magnificent obsessions who loves to participate in them," she says. And, too, if she agreed to write an article about it, the trip was free. So began an arduous, ill-conceived journey that started with her losing a duffle bag of top-notch river gear and swiftly ran up against treacherous rapids, foot rot, hot flashes, Tarzan-like leeches, clouds of sweat bees, and other nerveracking flora and fauna. While traversing a section of steamy rain forest, Johnston says, "a quarter of the things I touched had thorns or sharp spines and the rest were covered with ants." She replays the highs and lows of the trip in Technicolor, summing up her fellow travelers and their wild ride in fluid, punchy prose. --Francesca Coltrera
The Tank Killers: A History of America's World War II Tank Destroyer Force ISBN: 1932033807, 1932033262 | 2010 | MOBI | 339 pages | 5 MB The Tank Killers is the story of the American Tank Destroyer Force in North Africa, Italy, and the European Theater during World War II. The tank destroyer (TD) was a bold-if some would say flawed-answer to the challenge posed by the seemingly unstoppable German blitzkrieg. The TD was conceived to be light and fast enough to outmaneuver panzer forces and go where tanks could not. At the same time, the TD would wield the firepower needed to kill any German tank on the battlefield. Indeed, American doctrine stipulated that TDs would fight tanks, while American tanks would concentrate on achieving and exploiting breakthroughs of enemy lines. The Tank Killers follows the men who fought in the TDs from the formation of the force in 1941 through the victory over the Third Reich in 1945. It is a story of American flexibility and pragmatism in military affairs. Tank destroyers were among the very first units to land in North Africa in 1942. Their first vehicles were ad hoc affairs: Halftracks and weapons carriers with guns no better than those on tanks and thin armor affording the crews considerably less protection. Almost immediately, the crews realized that their doctrine was incomplete. They began adapting to circumstances, along with their partners in the infantry and armored divisions. By the time that North Africa was in Allied hands, the TD had become a valued tank fighter, assault gun, and artillery piece. The reconnaissance teams in TD battalions, meanwhile, had established a record for daring operations that they would continue for the rest of the war. The story continues with the invasion of Italy and finally that of Fortress Europe on 6 June 1944. By now, the brass had decreed that half the force would convert to towed guns, a decision that dogged the affected crews through the end of the war. The TD men encountered increasingly lethal enemies, ever more dangerous panzers that were often vulnerable only to their guns while American tank crews watched in frustration as their rounds bounced harmlessly off the thick German armor. They fought under incredibly diverse conditions that demanded constant modification of tactics. Their equipment became ever more deadly. By VE day, the tank destroyer battalions had achieved impressive records, generally with kill/loss rates heavily in their favor. Yet the Army after the war concluded that the concept of a separate TD arm was so fundamentally flawed that not a single battalion existed after November 1946. The Tank Killers draws heavily on the records of the tank destroyer battalions and the units with which they fought. Veterans of the force add their personal stories

Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter English | 2005 | ISBN: 0740750372 | 219 pages | EPUB | 3 MB Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's deepest wish is that everyone understand that knitting is at least as fun as baseball and way cooler than the evil looped path of crochet. Every project, from a misshapen hat to the most magnificent sweater, holds a story. Yarn Harlot tells all those stories with humor, insight, and sympathy for the obsessed. Over 50 million people in America knit. The average knitter spends between $500 and $1,700 a year on yarn, patterns, needles, and books. No longer just a fad or a hobby, knitting has advanced to a lifestyle. Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter moves beyond instructions and patterns into the purest elements of knitting: obsession, frustration, reflection, and fun. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's humorous and poignant essays find humor in knitting an enormous afghan that requires a whopping 30 balls of wool, having a husband with size 13 feet who loves to wear hand-knit socks, and earns her "yarn harlot" title with her love of any new yarn--she'll quickly drop an old project for the fresh saucy look of a new interesting yarn. Since the upsurge in knitting began in the early '90s, the number of women under 45 who knit has doubled. Knitting is no longer a hobby for just grandmothers--women and men of all ages are embracing this art. Describing its allure is best left to Stephanie who explains: "It is a well-known fact that knitting is a sparkling form of entertainment, as spiritual as yoga, as relaxing as a massage, and as funny as Erma Bombeck trapped in a PTA meeting."

The Healing Power of the Human Voice: Mantras, Chants, and Seed Sounds for Health and Harmony English | ISBN: 1594770506 | 2005 | PDF | 192 pages | 8,7 MB A complete introduction to using the sounds of the voice to promote healing • Explains the emotional meanings and healing attributes of human vocal expression, from vowels and consonants to natural sounds such as laughter or sighs • Includes easy-to-follow vocal and breathing exercises • Contains chants and mantras from cultures around the world As infants and children we use our vocalizations to express our needs and emotions. As we grow older these vocalizations become confined to language. The suppression of emotional sounds because they may be considered childish or undignified is quite commonplace in Western cultures. Yet when done with vigor, the sounds made by laughing, groaning, humming, keening, and sighing hold within them great power for healing. In The Healing Power of the Human Voice James D'Angelo introduces the concepts behind sound healing and provides simple, practical exercises for beginners. He explains in detail the meanings and healing attributes of the whole range of human vocal expression, from vowels and consonants to the natural sounds of laughter or sighs. He praises the power of singing and reveals the ways in which group singing can contribute to physical and mental health. He also presents authentic classical chants and mantras from cultures around the world and shows how we can combine various vocal sounds to form our own mantra to help clear chakra blockages. All of the sounds discussed, as well as the techniques for producing overtones, are placed in a ritualized context and are accompanied by simple movements to enhance tuning the body toward inner harmony, health, and peace.
101 Freshwater Fishing Tips & Tricks English | ISBN: 1602390002 | 2007 | EPUB | 160 pages | 9,3 MB One of America’s best known fishermen with more than 50 years of on-water experience, Bill Dance is also a tournament champion and a television personality. His tips will help any angler catch more and bigger fish. Even experienced fishermen may not know that dark-colored lures work best during low light conditions; that reluctant bass often bite at smaller lures fished slowly; that 75% of all line failures occur at the knot, so good knot tying is essential to success; that when waters rise, bass move shallower—when it falls, they move deeper. Dance’s knowledge is so wide-ranging that absolute beginners and crusty old veteran fishermen alike will be educated and entertained and amazed. This book is being supported by The International Game Fish Association (IGFA), a leading authority on angling and the keeper of fishing’s world record.
Across Atlantic Ice: The Origin of America's Clovis Culture English | ISBN: 0520227832 | 2012 | EPUB | 336 pages | 5,6 MB Who were the first humans to inhabit North America? According to the now familiar story, mammal hunters entered the continent some 12,000 years ago via a land bridge that spanned the Bering Sea. Distinctive stone tools belonging to the Clovis culture established the presence of these early New World people. But are the Clovis tools Asian in origin? Drawing from original archaeological analysis, paleoclimatic research, and genetic studies, noted archaeologists Dennis J. Stanford and Bruce A. Bradley challenge the old narrative and, in the process, counter traditional--and often subjective--approaches to archaeological testing for historical relatedness. The authors apply rigorous scholarship to a hypothesis that places the technological antecedents of Clovis in Europe and posits that the first Americans crossed the Atlantic by boat and arrived earlier than previously thought. Supplying archaeological and oceanographic evidence to support this assertion, the book dismantles the old paradigm while persuasively linking Clovis technology with the culture of the Solutrean people who occupied France and Spain more than 20,000 years ago.

Beyond A Love Supreme: John Coltrane and the Legacy of an Album English | ISBN: 0199733236, 0199733244 | 2013 | PDF | 176 pages | 1,5 MB Recorded by his quartet in a single session in 1964, A Love Supreme is widely considered John Coltrane's magnum opus and one of the greatest jazz albums of all time. In Beyond A Love Supreme, Tony Whyton explores both the musical complexities of A Love Supreme and the album's seminal importance in jazz history. Marking Coltrane's transition from the bebop and hard bop of his earlier recordings to the free jazz style perfected throughout the rest of his career, the album also embodies the deep spirituality that characterized the final years of his life. The titles of the four part suite--"Acknowledgment," "Resolution," "Pursuance," and "Psalm"--along with the poem Coltrane composed for inclusion in the liner notes, which he "recites" instrumentally in "Psalm," reflect the religious aspect of the album, a quality that contributes to its mystique and symbolic importance within the canon of major jazz recordings. But Whyton also shows how A Love Supreme challenges many of the traditional, unreflective assumptions that permeate jazz culture--the binary oppositions between improvisation and composition, black music and white music, live performance and studio recording. He critically examines many of the mythologizing narratives about how the album was conceived and recorded and about what it signifies in terms of the trajectory of Coltrane's personal life. Sifting through the criticism of late Coltrane, Whyton suggests ways of listening to
these recordings that go beyond the conventional ideologies of mainstream jazz practice and open the music to a wider range of responses. Filled with fresh insights into one of the most influential recordings in jazz history, Beyond A Love Supreme is an indispensable resource for jazz scholars, jazz musicians, and fans and aficionados at all levels.
A Profound Mind: Cultivating Wisdom in Everyday Life By H. H. the Dalai Lama 2011 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 0385514670 | PDF | 5 MB For the first time for general readers, the Dalai Lama presents a comprehensive overview of the most important teaching of Buddhism. Perhaps the main difference between Buddhism and other religions is its understanding of our core identity. The existence of the soul or self, which is central in different ways to Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, is actually denied in Buddhism. Even further, belief in a “self is seen as the main source of our difficulties in life. Yet a true understanding of this teaching does not lead one to a despairing, cynical worldview with a sense that life has no meaning—Far from it, a genuine understanding leads to authentic happiness for an individual and the greatest source of compassion for others. In 2003 and in 2007, the Dalai Lama was invited to New York to give a series of talks on the essential Buddhist view of selflessness. This new book, the result of those talks, is now offered to help broaden awareness of this essential doctrine and its usefulness in living a more meaningful and happy life. While the Dalai Lama offers a full presentation of his teachings on these key philosophical points for contemplation, he also shows readers how to bring these teachings actively into their own lives with recommendations for a personal practice. It is only by actually living these teachings that we allow them to bring about a genuine transformation in our perception of ourselves and our lives A Profound Mind offers important wisdom for those committed to bringing about change in the world through developing their own spiritual capabilities, whether they are Buddhists or not.

The Subtle Energy Body: The Complete Guide English | 2010 | ISBN: 1594773394 | ISBN-13: 9781594773396 | 416 pages | PDF | 19 MB A global study of the psychospiritual body and its central role in the esoteric and spiritual traditions of the world • Explains the nature, purpose, and functions of the subtle body • Explores the role of the subtle body in such traditions as Alchemy, Ayurveda, Tantra, Qi Gong, and Yoga • Shows how the various layers of the subtle body provide a map for various levels of consciousness Ancient traditions of both the East and West have long maintained that the human being is a complex of material and nonmaterial systems, or energy bodies. The "subtle body" is an energetic, psychospiritual entity of several layers of increasing subtlety and metaphysical significance through which the aspirant seeks knowledge of the self and the nature of God. In many traditions, the component parts of the subtle body serve as a map of the different levels of consciousness. The practices and disciplines that evolved from an awareness and understanding of the subtle body, and how the material and nonmaterial work together, form a coherent system of psychospiritual transformation that is central to numerous and extremely diverse spiritual practices--including those of the Gnostics, Sufis, Native Americans, Vedic seers, Chinese, and Greeks. The subtle body plays an essential part in more recent traditions such as Anthroposophy and Gurdjieff's Fourth Way and the cutting-edge science of Ervin Laszlo's research into the Akashic field. But the benefits of understanding the role of the subtle energy body are not confined solely to the spiritual plane. The energetic bodies provide a coherent system of life-affirming principles and practices for the diagnosis and treatment of the whole person that is not only part of many traditional healing systems, such as Acupuncture and Ayurveda, but also is forming the basis for a synthesis of traditional and contemporary healing practices that could lay the foundation for the medicine of the future.

The Teatime Islands: Adventures in Britain's Faraway Outposts ISBN: 0141010460, 0718145712 | 2004 | MOBI | 288 pages | 6 MB Welcomed with open arms, derided as a pig-ignorant tourist and occasionally mocked mercilessly for his trouble, Ben Fogle visited the last flag-flying outposts of the British Empire. With caution, dignity and a spare pair of pants thrown to the wind, he set out to discover just exactly who would choose to live on islands as remote as these and - more importantly - tried to figure out exactly why. Landing himself on islands so isolated, wind-swept, barren and just damned peculiar that they might have Robinson Crusoe thinking twice, Fogle: - Almost becomes lunch on the appropriately named Carcass Island - Gets deported from Pitcairn for being both a spy and a smuggler - Uncovers the story of the tyrant who became St Helena's most unwilling and least popular guest - And witnesses a shark attack from a respectable distance. Why he went, what he did when he got there and how exactly he got back in one piece makes for an eye-opening but affectionate look into life in these unique, peculiar places.
The Fellowship: The Story of a Revolution ISBN: 0713997451 | 2005 | EPUB | 352 pages | 3 MB From the bestselling author of Science: A History comes the enthralling story of a revolution that shook the world. Seventeenth-century England was racked by civil war, plague and fire; a world ruled by superstition and ignorance. A series of meetings of 'natural philosophers' in Oxford and London saw the beginning of a new method of thinking based on proof and experiment. John Gribbin's gripping, colourful account of this unparalleled time of discovery explores the impact of the Royal Society, culminating with Isaac Newton's revolutionary description of the universe and Edmund Halley's prediction of the return of a comet in 1759. This compelling book shows the triumph not as the work of one isolated genius, but of a Fellowship.
How Hitler Could Have Won World War II: The Fatal Errors That Lead to Nazi Defeat
ISBN: 0812932021 | 2000 | MOBI | 352 pages | 8 MB Most of us rally around the glory of the Allies' victory over the Nazis in World War II. The story is often told of how the good fight was won by an astonishing array of manpower and stunning tactics. However, what is often overlooked is how the intersection between Adolf Hitler's influential personality and his military strategy was critical in causing Germany to lose the war. With an acute eye for detail and his use of clear prose, acclaimed military historian Bevin Alexander goes beyond counterfactual "What if?" history and explores for the first time just how close the Allies were to losing the war. Using beautifully detailed, newly designed maps, How Hitler Could Have Won World War II exquisitely illustrates the important battles and how certain key movements and mistakes by Germany were crucial in determining the war's outcome. Alexander's harrowing study shows how only minor tactical changes in Hitler's military approach could have changed the world we live in today. How Hitler Could Have Won World War II untangles some of the war's most confounding strategic questions, such as: Why didn't the Nazis concentrate their enormous military power on the only three beaches upon which the Allies could launch their attack into Europe? Why did the terrifying German panzers, on the brink of driving the British army into the sea in May 1940, halt their advance and allow the British to regroup and evacuate at Dunkirk? With the chance to cut off the Soviet lifeline of oil, and therefore any hope of Allied victory from the east, why did Hitler insist on dividing and weakening his army, which ultimately led to the horrible battle of Stalingrad? Ultimately, Alexander probes deeply into the crucial intersection between Hitler's psyche and military strategy and how his paranoia fatally overwhelmed his acute political shrewdness to answer the most terrifying question: Just how close were the Nazis to victory? Why did Hitler insist on terror bombing London in the late summer of 1940, when the German air force was on the verge of destroying all of the RAF sector stations, England's last defense? With the opportunity to drive the British out of Egypt and the Suez Canal and occupy all of the Middle East, therefore opening a Nazi door to the vast oil resources of the region, why did Hitler fail to move in just a few panzer divisions to handle such an easy but crucial maneuver? On the verge of a last monumental effort and concentration of German power to seize Moscow and end Stalin's grip over the Eastern front, why did the Nazis divert their strength to bring about the far less important surrender of Kiev, thereby destroying any chance of ever conquering the Soviets?
Spectator in Hell: A British Soldier's Story of Imprisonment in Auschwitz English | ISBN: 1840246146 | 2007 | PDF | 256 pages | 4 MB In 1942 the young soldier Arthur Dodd was taken prisoner by the German Army and transported to Oswiecim in Polish Upper Silesia. The German name for the place was 'Auschwitz': a name now synonymous with man's darkest hour. Auschwitz-Birkenau, the most infamous German death-camp of the Second World War, functioned for the incarceration and extermination of those that the third Reich deemed "undesirables": Jews, homosexuals, Communists. What is less known is that it was the fate of hundreds of British POWs to find it their prison, and to behold the atrocities meted out by Hitler's SS. This is the true story of one of those witnesses. Forced to do hard labour, starved and savagely beaten, Arthur thought his life would end in Auschwitz. Determined to go down fighting, he sabotaged Nazi industrial work, risked his life to alleviate the suffering of the Jewish prisoners, and aided a partisan group planning a mass break-out.

Whitey: The Life of America's Most Notorious Mob Boss 2013 | 448 Pages | ISBN: 0307986535 | EPUB | 4 MB From the bestselling authors of Black Mass comes the definitive biography of Whitey Bulger, the most brutal and sadistic crime boss since Al Capone. Drawing on a trove of sealed files and previously classified material, Whitey digs deep into the mind of James J. “Whitey Bulger, the crime boss and killer who brought the FBI to its knees. He is an American original --a psychopath who fostered a following with a frightening mix of terror, deadly intimidation and the deft touch of a politician who often helped a family in need meet their monthly rent. But the history shows that despite the early false myths portraying him as a Robin Hood figure, Whitey was a supreme narcissist, and everything--every interaction with family and his politician brother Bill Bulger, with underworld cohorts, with law enforcement, with his South Boston neighbors, and with his victims--was always about him. In an Irish-American neighborhood where loyalty has always been rule one, the Bulger brand was loyalty to oneself. Whitey deconstructs Bulger's insatiable hunger for power and control. Building on their years of reporting and uncovering new Bulger family records, letters and prison files, Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill examine and reveal the factors and forces that created the monster. It's a deeply rendered portrait of evil that spans nearly a century, taking Whitey from the streets of his boyhood Southie in the 1940s to his cell in Alcatraz in the 1950s to his cunning, corrupt pact with the FBI in the 1970s and, finally, to Santa Monica, California where for fifteen years he was hiding in plain sight as one of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted. In a lifetime of crime and murder that ended with his arrest in June 2011, Whitey Bulger became one of the most powerful and deadly crime bosses of the twentieth century. This is his story.
