Screwed Screwed is the type of book that all teens should read. The readers will rally behind Grace and be cheering for her until the end. I know I was doing exactly this. What a courageous young woman Grace was. She had a steep hill to climb with being pregnant and homeless. Yet she found some good friends in her neighbor and her great nephew.
Silver Rain The Depression of the 1930s was tough on everyone, and it hit Elsie's family hard. After they lost their house and her Dad went missing, and then her mom and uncle left her alone with her grandmother she couldn't imagine things could get any worse. But as her Nan often said, "Desperate times sometimes call for desperate measures," and Elsie will stop at nothing to get her family back together again.
Period 8 Heller High senior Paul Baum aka Paulie Bomb tells the truth. Not the "Wow, that's an ugly sweater" variety of truth, but the other kind. The truth that matters. It might be hard. It often hurts. But Paulie doesn't know how not to tell it. When he tells his girlfriend Hannah the life-altering, messed-up, awful truth, his life falls apart. The truth can get complicated, fast.
Parallel The premise is totally mind blowing and pretty complex, but Miller ties things together extremely well and makes everything easy to follow. The idea of parallel universes can be difficult to wrap your mind around, but you learn about them as Abby learns about them, so things are explained in a really easy to understand way.
New Amsterdam This book is presented as a series of interlocked short stories. The stories build in drama and tension. The relationships between the primary characters develops to a very moving crescendo, as they work togother to solve crimes in a very different "New Amsterdam". HIghly recommended!
Legacies In the wake of the accident that killed her family, Spirit White is spirited away to Oakhurst Academy, a combination school and orphanage in the middle of Montana. There she learns she is a legacy not only to the school, which her parents also attended, but to magic.
Fire Inside: A Chaos Novel Lanie Heron isn't looking for love-no surprise, considering her last serious relationship nearly got her killed. So when Lanie propositions Hop Kincaid, all she wants is one wild night with the hot-as-hell biker who patrols with the Chaos Motorcycle Club . . .
Garrett Investigates If you're a fan of Bear's writing, in particular of her wonderful Steampunk/alt-history/vampire/magic-realism mash-up world heretofore more famously populated by the vampire Sebastien de Ulloa, this book will certainly please. It centers on one of the supporting characters from the Sebastien stories/books, his companion Lady Abigail Irene Garrett, magician Detective Crown Investigator for an alt-history Steampunk Victorian world. Well written, with
interesting mysteries and well fleshed out characters, the book is a great read and I hope to see more stand-alone, Garrett-centered stories from Bear in the future.
Every Contact Leaves a Trace Alex Petrsen's wife of just a few months has been brutally murdered on the grounds of their alma mater, Worcester College at Oxford. Rachel went down to the lake to meet someone and her head was bashed in with a stone. Alex goes into a deep depression and has to leave his job as an attorney in order to process his grief.
Defriended (Point Horror) Jason has met the perfect girl. OK, so maybe he hasn't actually MET Lacey yet, but they talk online all the time. Yet despite spending most nights chatting, Lacey refuses to meet up in person. Suspicious, Jason starts googling, and his cyberstalking leads to a shocking discovery: According to multiple newspapers, Lacey died a year earlier.
Dark Serpent John and Emma head to Wales to try and work out who or what Emma is. But rather than providing a clear path to their long hoped-for marriage the answer could tear them apart forever. Emma will be forced to betray either John, her beloved Xuan Wu, or her past and birthright. To make matters worse, John’s celestial home at Wudangshan is under attack from the Demon King. Can John find the Emma he knows and love, and save Wudangshan from demonic destruction?
Dead on the Delta If you are a fan of Stacey Jay's young adult novels and can tolerate some potty-mouthed narration/dialog you will love DEAD ON THE DELTA. If you're new to Jay's work imagine a blend of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series and Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom series with a dash of Sophie Littlefield's crime novels. Overall I think this book will appeal to both male and female readers who enjoy Urban Fantasy with little to no romantic elements and readers who enjoy non-vampire/shapeshifter paranormal themes.
Conspiracies
Only days after defeating the Wild Hunt that had been attacking Oakhurst Academy students, Spirit and her friends think everything has quieted down. But suddenly magical attacks begin happening in the school among the entire student body, causing widespread, overwhelming fear. And when former alumnus Mark Rider arrives with an army of friends to help protect the school and train the students for war, Spirit seems to be the only one who distrusts them. Something is wrong with Doctor Ambrosius. And Spirit's friend Muirin begins to get too close to the newcomers. Her friends begin to think Spirit's concerns are just wild conspiracy theories. But the group must work together to stop the attacks and unravel the deeper mystery within Oakhurst Academy.
A Murder at Rosamund's Gate You're going to want to get in early on this series (bound to be a great series)...as Susanna Calkins weaves an intriguing tale set in early England. The characters are well developed and leave you wanting more. One learns interesting historical facts which fit neatly into the pleasurable story telling. It's a smart story which left me feeling smarter for having read it.
Star Trek Into Darkness Enjoyd it much. Now I can't wait to see the movie. Still more than a month to wait. Some unresolved plot, maybe for a sequel.
Ten Beach Road The contractor, Andrew, is an old family friend to Avery, but the way he seemingly condescends to her, calling her "Vanna" repeatedly, raised my ire. I could identify with the plight of being diminished by a man who is in a position of power.
Ten Miles Past Normal I love the contrast between what Janie wanted as a kid and what she believes she wants in the present. It rings so true, these childhood dreams of living somewhere rural and nonstandard and then hitting the teen years where everyone wants to be as urban and conforming as possible. But deep down, most readers are eager to absorb stories about unique people, and Ten Miles Past Normal certainly delivers on that front. Janie wouldn't truly be happy in the average life she imagines for herself, and it's gratifying to see her learn to live large, have fun, help people, and see past appearances.
Ten Thousand Saints TEN THOUSAND SAINTS is a novel well worth reading. AIDS, homelessness, gentrification, parenthood, adoption, and drug use are among the many topics incorporated in the book. The author does a great job of bringing the late
1980's in the East Village to detailed life and the choices of the kids and parents in the book will linger in the reader's memory. And the book ends with a very appropriate and effective postscript from 2006 on the last night the famed punk venue CBGB's was open.
Teranesia A series of religious straw men are set up and demolished to demonstrate that no good thing can emerge from religion. He does the same to post-modernism but since I agree with him there, that was much less alienating! As a religious person who would not dismiss a scientific hypothesis just because it conflicted with my beliefs I might just scrape into Egan's DMZ as one of the very few who are deluded but honourable. Given what I have just said, it is a good thing that the story remains focussed on the scientists, and here there is depth of characterization. These are no stereotypes, but likeable, believable people, with plausibly messed up psychologies and mixed motives. A thoroughly enjoyable book, with enough left unsaid to inspire further speculation about the implications of his remarkable invention.
The 13th Apostle This clearly is a book trying to capitalize off the success of Dan Brown. It also is simply a work of fiction that does not pretend to be based on historical fact. If you can get past that, you will enjoy this novel. It's not for everyone, but if you have an open mind it's worth reading.
The Affinity Bridge The biggest problem is the characterizations, which never feel entirely fleshed out okay, Maurice is a Holmesian genius with a weakness for laudanum and a rather murky history that seems to be made up as it goes along. Hobbes is a smart, capable woman who can do her own investigations. Although they are fairly likable characters, neither one is really expanded beyond their basic outlines especially since we hear hardly anything about their daily lives, their pasts, their families, et cetera. "The Affinity Bridge" suffers from underwritten lead characters, but has a solid mystery plot and a richly-imagined steampunk world. If he can flesh them out a little, the next Newbury and Hobbes book is sure to be a pure delight.
The Afghan Campaign "Virtues" showcased the brilliant and luminous (if increasingly dark and explosive) personality of Alexander the Great, whose soaring rhetoric inspired men to hurl themselves into countless battles on his behalf. But "Afghan" thrusts us directly into the flesh-and-blood horrors created by that rhetoric: The horrors of men traumatized by an often unseen and always menacing enemy, and the horrors they must inflict in return if they are to survive in a hostile and alien world.
The Alchemy of Stone One of the things I truly admire about this book is Sedia's refusal to give the fairy tale happy-sappy group-hug ending. If you want all of your stories to end like Star Wars movies, this is not for you. If you like your stories to be readable as literature and as a really good story, much in the way of Philip K. Dick, dark and powerful and yet somehow beautiful, this book will stay in your memory far long after you finish the last page.
The Alienist "The Alienist" is one of the few murder mysteries that I have ever enjoyed reading a second time. The characters are memorable, dryly amusing at times, and always fascinating. Carr portrays his victims as humans and individuals, rather than sensationalizing their professions. The plot, including a race against time once the team predicts when the killer is likely to strike again, moves along at a brisk pace. The historical detail advances the plot rather than bogging it down. Lovers of historical fiction and detective mysteries will find a treat in "The Alienist."
The Anatomy of Ghosts
Author Taylor sets his mystery at "Jerusalem College", a walled conclave in which only two women reside. It is an atmospheric, somewhat furtive community, with a code of ethics very much its own. Holdsworth, the outsider, is forced to turn over many rocks before he can piece together a theory about what actually happened the night Frank Oldershaw had his breakdown. He also must deal, contemporaneously, with his own ghosts, in a decidedly unsympathetic climate. Taylor presents an uncompromising portrait of late 18th century society, in which a callous aristocracy keeps a heavy foot on the neck of the underclass. His central question, whether haunting a two way street that "flows in both directions" between haunter and haunted, is the spark that makes this story a compelling one. Andrew Taylor is a masterful British author who deserves more attention from American readers.
The Devil's Waters (A USAF Pararescue Thriller) The plot ends with an excellent explanation of why the government has given the orders it did and why the team was sent out on this mission. Too often, readers are left to guess politicians and military leader's reasoning for doing what they do. We are left with no doubt as to their logic - right or wrong as that might be. This is an excellent book for the plot line and the actions of the characters within.
The Lawyer's Lawyer Read this and see what adventure your mind takes you on as you read what I consider to be a combination of James Patterson's pace James Sheehan's legal experience make this a thrilling must read. Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
Under the Light Going into this story, I was pretty anxious. A Certain Slant of Light was one of my favorite reads in recent memory, a slow, sad ghost story with a literary style and questionable ethics. Helen's choices left Jenny in an unimaginably difficult situation, however, and I wasn't sure whether the author could convince me that this wrong could be righted without losing the integrity of the first book.
The Rithmatist I will say that the book is labeled as YA but I'd place it closer to MG. The main character is 16, but it's got a younger voice. However, with the type of book that it is that alternate history, steampunk-like world it works. It's still very complex and I think it's a book that will appeal to younger kids... And judging by the ending, I'd say there will be a sequel, which I will DEFINITELY be reading.
Wish You Were Here Now this is what I call a true romantic comedy! Victoria did it again and brought us a magical love story and I wouldn't be surprised if one day this book is made into a movie. While reading I felt like I was in Greece myself. I felt the sunshine, the Greek atmosphere and the romance.
What Have I Done? I started reading this book knowing it was going to be about domestic violence but had no idea just how harrowing a read it was going to be. The first quarter of the book is a little slow but necessary to understand Kate's life later in the book , when she reflects her previous life with her husband Mark. At times I struggled to continue reading some of the detailed chapters as the story is explicit and fearful. Yet other times I couldn't put the book down because I was desperate to know the outcome. The cliche 'You never know what goes on behind closed doors' is a true description of this book.
Wash This Blood Clean from My Hand And, as the story goes on, you begin to even distrust some of the Commissaire's colleagues, wondering what's going on - you feel true empathy with Adamsberg, the protagonist. And that is the result of a master writer at work.
Unnatural Creatures: Stories Selected by Neil Gaiman Some of these stories are old friends, and many are new to me. Neil Gaiman is a wonderful story teller, and the folks he hangs out with are well chosen.
Want This is an amazingly wonderful read that shows evidence of great world building and character development. Its painfully believable plot and poetic flow guarantee a storytelling time full of intrigue and a ton of other feelings. I guarantee every reader will walk away moved by this read but I also guarantee no two readers will walk away feeling or thinking the same emotions or thoughts. Completely worth all the angst, tears, heartache and lack of sleep. I recommend this book to everyone.
Waking up in Vegas No matter your age, every woman imagines the fairy tale. I spent a delightful few hours reading this lovely story. I am not a fan of romance fiction, but this was splendid, fast paced and joyful. The heroine has a mind of her own and is not some submissive damsel waiting to be swept off her feet - thank goodness! Waking up in Vegas had me laughing, shedding a tear or two and renewing my belief in love. Not bad for a cold winters afternoon read.
Untouched Juliet McKenzie is dangerous. Emerson can tell from the way she blows through all his defences, laying bare the demons he’s carried alone all his life. He’s left a trail of broken hearts and empty beds in his wake, but Juliet is different. Her innocence is intoxicating and the passion she keeps hidden, just below the surface. He wants to be the only one to set it free, but with every kiss, he’s closer to losing control and doing the one thing he swore he never would: fall in love.
Towering The plot was predictable, the writing felt bland, and I am just wholly disappointed. I don't know if I feel this way because I've changed or if it truly is a step down from the level of awesomeness that was A Kiss In Time and Bewitching. I know I've stepped away from YA lately, reading more NA, and I really hope that that's why I didn't love this like I wanted to. I hope everyone else reads it and adores it as much as her previous works. So my advice for everyone is just give it a try, hopefully you'll love it.
The Wrath of Angels: A Charlie Parker Thriller I love the way John Connolly writes. It is sensitive, graphic, explosive and haunting. I just thank God that he doesn't leave it too long between books. One of my favourite authors as he never, but never, disappoints.
This One Is Mine This book is incredibly compelling in a quiet way. I enjoyed Semple's zany humor and vulgar language aside, it was an enjoyable read. Semple has such a vivid imagination enabling me to easily envision the characters' peculiarities and find something relatable about each one of them. This is one of those off-beat books that is unexpected and can elicit laughter from even the most subtle humor. I loved how unique this book was and though some may find it too unconventional, it worked for me.
This Night's Foul Work: A Commissaire Adamsberg Mystery Written in droll prose, the novel is excellently translated by Sian Reynolds who captures the language and offbeat comments with accuracy. The plot certainly is offbeat and inclusion of Racine-like poetry is an excellent touch. The crimes described are among the more unusual in this type of mystery and the reader has to keep turning pages to keep up with events and the eccentric characters. Recommended.
The Ward Ren ends up being the one to find a cure to the plague that is rampant in the world and most of the book is spent with her trying to get more and come up with a way to get it to everyone who is sick even though people are trying to stop her. I enjoyed it, there was plenty of action and suspense. I enjoyed the characters. There is some 'mean girl' type behavior but it wasn't bad enough to annoy me. There are a few instances where some better explanation of events would have benefited. There is a bit of romance thrown in too.
The View from Penthouse B The basic story Margot and Gwen-Laura are sisters, who find themselves both alone for very different reasons. Margot's doctor husband is in prison after a scandal, and Gwen was suddenly widowed. They move in together to save money, and take in a third roommate, the affable Anthony. Slowly, they both move to new starts, to figuring out life and romance in the 21st century. There isn't much more plot than that.
The War Game The War Game written by Crystal Black is set in a futuristic time in America. Crystal Black does a very well job creating her main character Pearl. Through her eyes you meet a variety of interesting people who interact with Pearl throughout the book. Crystal Black is a talented author and shows her unique writing style with her first novel The War Game.
The Ultimate Good Luck Richard Ford is an incredible writer. His works dig deep into the character's psyche. Ford usually finds his characters in the midst of a down cycle in their lives and explores their personal experience as they deal with life's trauma. Not the usual novel nonsense where everything ends happily ever after, but a real life portrayal as an individual encounters the nitty gritty essentials of life and confronts the tough choices offered.
The Third Cell The Third Cell was seriously one of the best books that I've read in a long time! Just when you think you've read all of the usual espionage/terrorist books, along comes a story that will totally blow you away. The historical context, realistic characters, and modern day events result in a cataclysmic story that will make you wonder whether this could really happen.
The Tyrant's Law (The Dagger and the Coin) The tyrant Geder Palliako had led his nation to war, but every victory has called forth another conflict. Now the greater war spreads out before him, and he is bent on bringing peace. No matter how many people he has to kill to do it.
The Three Evangelists From the opening few pages, this mystery hooks you quickly. The characters are some of the most fascinating I've ever read - in many ways, I wish the author would write more stories involving them. So original.
The Summer Man I haven't done much since S.D. Perry's The Summer Man arrived on my Kindle except read it. I'm an exceedingly picky reader, and in my opinion Ms. Perry doesn't put a foot wrong here from beginning to end. Her prose is superb, her plotting sure, and she handles a varied and utterly believable cast of characters deftly and skillfully while telling a gripping story that's well worth your time, money, and attention. I really hope I don't have long to wait for her next book.
The Second Virginity of Suzy Green Suzy's changed her tune. Gone is the former wild child who dressed all in black and got into trouble nearly every day. Instead, she's trying to become more like her sister, Rosie, who just died. She doesn't want her parents to worry anymore. A change in location lets Suzy start over. Soon she's made friends with popular girls, but things here are very different from back home. For one thing, it's popular to belong to the V-club. Technically, Suzy's not a virgin, but what her new friends don't know can't hurt her, right?
The Scourge
The story and characters in The Scourge are completely captivating and prevented me from putting this book down but what haunted me long after I had read it were the themes of societal brutality and cruel governance for the greater good. In particular "The Exchange." This barbaric world is not only beautifully and consistently detailed but also frighteningly plausible. The plot is solid and takes plenty of jaw-dropping twists and turns.
The Rose Cabaret: The Complete Series The Rose Cabaret follows Alina on her quest for the ultimate sexual experience. Dane was a performer at the Rose. He sang of suppressed desire and unfulfilled passion of a romance that seized the hearts and bodies of two lovers who could never be together. And as his smooth, honeyed tones filled the air around her, the bounds of her mundane existence fell magically away from her making her feel free and wild, like she could cut loose and do anything at any moment.
The Little Shadows The second and third part of the story becomes very interesting and the characters come alive. Circumstances separate the sisters. A pair of delightful comedians looks after Bella. Bella, in turn, takes care of a once-gifted raconteur, who has a drinking problem. Aurora marries a much older man to keep the family afloat. He is a suave and thirty years older than Aurora. Clover's boyfriend, who is of European descent decides to leave vaudeville to join the British Army.
The Mermaid Chair Inside the abbey of a Benedictine monastery on tiny Egret Island, just off the coast of South Carolina, resides a beautiful and mysterious chair ornately carved with mermaids and dedicated to a saint who, legend claims, was a mermaid before her conversion. Jessie Sullivan’s conventional life has been “molded to the smallest space possible.” So when she is called home to cope with her mother’s startling and enigmatic act of violence, Jessie finds herself relieved to be apart from her husband, Hugh. Jessie loves Hugh, but on Egret Island amid the gorgeous marshlands and tidal creeks she becomes drawn to Brother Thomas, a monk who is mere months from taking his final vows. What transpires will unlock the roots of her mother’s tormented past, but most of all, as Jessie grapples with the tension of desire and the struggle to deny it, she will find a freedom that feels overwhelmingly right.
The Lazarus Project This story is enlivened by Bosnian and Jewish jokes, and crucial catchphrases that grow in resonance with each reprise: "Home is where somebody notices your absence" "I am just like everybody else because there is nobody like me in the whole world." The novel also notes the parallels between the U.S. war against anarchism a century ago and its war against terrorism today, without belaboring them.
The House of Serenades THE HOUSE OF SERENADES takes you down paths that twist and turn into ever darker and more shocking corners. Just when you think you know the worst about this rich, arrogant, misogynist family, a more despicable secret surfaces. No character is without flaw, not even the young lovers we're rooting for. Music alone transcends. And what better instrument in 1910 Genoa, Italy than the mandolin? You read faster, riveted by how such dissonance could possibly end in harmony.
The Killing Room Another great read from Montanari. The Byrne/Balzano books are among the best in the genre. Being Catholic and Italian, I would imagine this book really hit home with me. Loved the story and was extremely surprised when then end unfolded. I did not see that coming! I will say that the last two pages had me very confused and I found myself reading it several times. I still am somewhat confused by those pages but, overall, a great book. Looking forward to his next.
The Holiday Home Set on a Cornish cliff, Atlantic House has been the jewel in the Carew family crown for centuries. Each year, the Carew sisters embark on the yearly trip down to Cornwall for the summer holidays, but they are as different and vinegar and honey.
The Hope Factory This book seemed pleasant reading from the outset, but as it progressed it gathered heft and conviction, resulting in a very satisfying read. The author develops her characters and their settings very well and her writing is heartfelt. Her unfussy prose, descriptive detail and deft characterization make reading a pleasure. I enjoyed this book very much, and would highly recommend it.
The Garden of Stones (Echoes of Empire) It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did, it was a good read. It is a complex world, and the author kindly has a list of characters, terms, etc. in the back. I needed it. I am still undecided if I want to read a sequel.
The Fanatic James Robertson is a stickler for detail. This makes his writing specific and, thus, believable. The book's characters, especially those rooted in historical fact, are well fleshed out. Robertson's language is both beautifully descriptive and unquestionably Scottish. Despite that, I can't help feeling that his best writing is yet to come. If James Robertson learns to let his imagination run amok like the fearless Salman Rushdie or Umberto Eco, we'll be in for a real treat. In the meantime, he's one of the best writers out there and has technical ability in spades.
The Concrete Grove Well, what he has done is to create an updated version of those earlier tales that suggest our pagan forebears were aware of hidden primal forces. That ancient rites, particularly those involving ritual sacrifice, were practised to appease or control such forces at specific locales in nature, nodes of power, such as those marked by megalithic stone circles or groves of ancient oak trees. Some of these ideas may seem a little dated in the light of contemporary scholarship, but they were very much in vogue following the release of books such as Sir James Frazer's massively influential anthropological treatise, The Golden Bough, published in 1890. This in turn had an influence on many of the great writers of supernatural fiction working at the turn of the last century.
The Cupcake Diaries: Recipe for Love This is the second book in the Cupcake Diaries trilogy and it was another cute read. This are fun and sweet novellas that are perfect for a light read that makes you smile and the love and innocence. Rachel is a little naive in the three date rule but I like the idea of trying to protect her heart. Mike is fun and I like that he is willing to help Rachel. Cute story!
The Collector The Collector by Kay Jaybee is an eclectic collection of 20 erotic short stories. The book is really like a box of chocolates, as the saying goes, you never know what you're going to get. One thing is for certain, you're going to love every tasty little morsel.
The Barbarian Nurseries The last section captures an unfortunate aspect of American life with deadly accuracy. In an ideal world, the "no harm, no foul" rule would leave the parents and Araceli free from repercussions, but Tobar recognizes that the media-driven lust for scapegoats drives decisions about arrest, prosecution, and deportation. In different ways, both Araceli and the Torres-Thompsons become victims of politics and a frenzied media. Those with an agenda view Araceli and the Torres-Thompsons as symbols, not as persons.
The Chalk Circle Man: A Commissaire Adamsberg Mystery I was impressed with the characters, plotting, writing style (including the excellent translation) and the realistic depiction of French people and culture. For fans of international crime fiction, or Simenon/Maigret, do yourself a favor and read The Chalk Circle Man.
The Aviator's Wife "The Aviator's Wife" is a thrilling book about famous people trying to live with the burdens of hero worship. It is not just America, but the whole world, that seems to be mad about Charles Lindbergh. Melanie Benjamin brings the story vividly to life. It is as if Anne Morrow sat down and told the story herself. With strong pacing and clear characters, the conflicts of a wife under her husband's thumb turn what might have been a fairy-tale marriage into a story of will, a story of power.
The Age of Scorpio Praised by Stephen Baxter and Adam Roberts, reviewed ecstatically by SFX magazine Gavin Smith's first novel VETERAN announced an exciting new voice on the SF scene. WAR IN HEAVEN, set in the same universe followed. Now comes a new stand-alone SF thriller. Of all the captains based out of Arclight only Eldon Sloper was desperate enough to agree to a salvage job in Red Space. And now he and his crew are living to regret his desperation. In Red Space the rules are different.
Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, Into the Void This was a pretty good book. Considering the Fate of the Jedi series was some of the worst books I have ever read. I was losing interest in star wars novels. This book was interesting because it was similar to the Jedi we know. It's like you can see how these Je'daai evolved into Jedi. The problem I have is that the author hints at things you expect and then they don't happen. Also the book is deceptively short. It ends at 60%.
Strangely Normal I do not want to say anymore because I do not want to spoil this read. However, I will say that I truly enjoyed this story. If I had a complaint, it would be that I wanted more. I enjoyed this book so much that I didn't want the story to end. I was emotionally invested. "Strangely Normal" would make a great series. I could easily see a second book that focuses on Finley. What do you say Ms. Oliver?
Staff of Judea (Rogue Angel) As always Alex archer delivers the goods. Every rogue angel book I've read (which is most of them) has been fast paced and action packed. If you are looking for a series filled with action, intrigue and mystery, then the Rogue Angel series is what you are looking for.
Scenes from Early Life "Scenes from Early Life" offers a huge tapestry of elements: the busy capital of Dacca, the political situation under which the Bengalis live, the repeated coming and going of relatives and friends, and the struggles between cultures that never should have been at war. Heshner adopts the voice of the young Saadi so well that readers may forget that this is a novel rather than a memoir. It is with great skill that Hensher cannily invokes this young voice to weave a tale that simultaneously contains a grand historical sweep and a grounded domesticity.
Son of Destruction A spellbinding American Southern Gothic thriller with a supernatural twist – a past secret has the power to destroy the future. When Lucy Cartaret dies, her journalist son Dan returns to her hometown, Fort Jude, Florida, in search of his real father and claiming to be investigating the mysterious deaths of three elderly women. Spontaneous human combustion, experts say. But why? Surely it’s more than coincidence – and what links these deaths to Dan’s mother? It soon becomes clear that something terrible happened during his mother’s last year in town, thirty years before. But the social elite of Fort Jude remain tight-lipped. The families who run the town will do anything to protect their own – anything.
School Spirits (A Hex Hall Novel) Having never read "Hex Hall," I was really nervous to pick up this book. I wasn't sure how much of it was a continuation of the original series or if the author would give enough back story to keep my caught up. Fortunately, not only is School Spirits an entertaining adventure, it is also filled with intrigue, interesting characters, several mysteries and one pissed off ghost.
Pieces of Truth (Pieces of Lies 2) This was the perfect complement to the first novel. I really enjoyed this one and I hope there will be another. I have been Team Josh since the beginning of the first book so shine my surprise when I get half way through this one!!!
Nightshade (The Fourth Jack Nightingale Supernatural Thriller) I really love Stephen Leather! I read the Jack Nightingale trilogy and was hooked from the first few pages. Nightshade is even better, it hits harder, the character relations increase in complexity, Proserpine is a hands-on gem! I can't wait for the next book
Odessa Again Fourth grader Odessa Green-Light lives with her mom and her toad of a little brother, Oliver. Her dad is getting remarried, which makes no sense according to Odessa. If the prefix "re" means "to do all over again," shouldn't he be remarrying Mom? Meanwhile, Odessa moves into the attic room of their new house. One day she gets mad and stomps across the attic floor. Then she feels as if she is falling and lands . . . on the attic floor. Turns out that Odessa has gone back in time a whole day! With this new power she can fix all sorts of things embarrassing moments, big mistakes, and even help Oliver be less of a toad. Her biggest goal: reunite Mom and Dad.
Over the Darkened Landscape Derryl Murphy's second collection reprints over a dozen stories that span a wide range of his career, including his second-ever sale (and Aurora nominee) "Body Solar," as well as his last piece of short fiction, "Ancients of the Earth" from Tesseracts 12. Over the Darkened Landscape is a mix of fantasy and science fiction, and also includes his four published "Magic Canada" stories, stories that take events in Canada's history and then give them a little bit of a fantastical spin.
Out of the Black Land Kerry Greenwood gives us an interesting view, from the perspective of the novelist, to the turbulent reign of the enigmatic "heretic" Pharaoh - Ahkenaten. Seen through the eyes of a scribe and through the eyes of Nefertiti's sister, this ancient world comes dazzlingly to life.
Murder as a Fine Art One of many indicators of a good book to me is if I don't want it to end. Mr. Morrell achieved this in Murder As A Fine Art. I stepped out of my comfort zone when I chose it, but I'm glad I did. I think you will be, too.
My Latest Grievance This book is a little like a diamond in the rough-it needs some polishing. There are too many chapters that don't advance the story and too many assumptions on behalf of the narrator, some parts are even boring. But other than that this is what Lipman does best-a first person narrative of something that happened to them-told as it would be to a friend.
Montaro Caine Although I have not read MONTARO CAINE yet, this book will certainly become one of my summer reads, however I own a movie entitled FOR THE LOVE OF IVY, which the actor Sydney Portier had written the screemplay, and FOR THE LOVE OF IVY is just one of my all time favorite movies!!!!
Move Under Ground Nick Mamatas does more than fulfill the promise of his first novella, Northern Gothic, in his debut novel. In fact, he's more than fulfilled the promise of any five young new writers. No matter how you end up feeling about the book itself, you just have to admire the guy's hubris at attempting to take two subgenres of fiction that passed the cliche stage decades ago and add in the exceptionally risky practice of incorporating historical characters into fiction. That the result is at all readable would have been a triumph. That it's actually good is nothing short of miraculous.
Mateship With Birds In this novel, the natural world is both character and backdrop. Beauty and routine, the mundane and the tragic are all part of life experienced by Betty and Harry. Michael is trying to make sense of his own place in a world which always looks different when adolescence kicks in and Hazel is both observant and resilient. The natural world applies to humans as well as to animals and birds. Well of course it does, but it isn't always as clearly integrated as it is here.
Kindred Butler was certainly not a "black author" in any limiting sense at all. She blasted open the SciFi gates of gender and color with her extraordinary vision, imagination, and courage. The choice of "Kindred" is a fitting tribute to the diversity of her hometowns of Pasadena and Altadena and the Pasadena Unifed School District in which she was educated.
Kill Shot (The Collective) (Volume 1) Overall this was a definite winner. Romance, Drama, Suspense and hot sex go hand in hand to make a great story. A thrilling page turner that will keep you guessing, gasping and completely at the authors mercy until you finish it.
House of Mercy House of Mercy is a novel for readers who want more than just an entertaining story which is definitely is. But the strength of the book is in its lesson and if that is the kind of book you want to read, then go to your local bookstore and buy yourself a copy, and some more for your friends.
Golden The town mystery felt at first like a separate part of the story entirely except you realize that Parker's life choices begin reforming as the pieces of the mystery begin coming together, both intertwined. She begins realizing the immensity of making your own life choices because this is your one wild and precious life. You don't have another.
Equal of the Sun Finally, a warning to readers: there's a character list at the front of the book, but those sensitive to spoilers may prefer to avoid it, since it lists rulers and the dates of their reigns. All the names and affiliations can be a bit complicated at first, but I could generally follow events without reference to the list.
Evidence of Life Abby Bennett is looking forward to some quiet time alone as her husband Nick and daughter Lindsay leave for a weekend camping trip. Abby's life is turned upside down when a devastating flood rips through the area and Nick and Lindsay are presumed drowned and lost in the raging waters. Abby refuses to believe they are gone and sets out to find them. As she investigates, some disturbing facts and evidence come to light and Abby finds herself questioning everything she once believed about her marriage and family.
Driven (The Driven Trilogy) This book is a diamond in the rough. The author has a good voice with a mesmerizing flow to her words. With the assistance of a good professional editor and a proofer the writing would be perfection. There are numerous items that made this reader cringe. For example check out this sentence: "I clumsily try to unbutton his shirt, needing to feel his
skin against mine but hindered by his constantly moving arms that are running fervently every any inch of bare skin his fingers can touch." Every any inch? I think the author meant to say "over any inch." This was not the first strange sentence and not the last this reader found. This was a really great story that I would love to see polished up and republished. I look forward to the sequel as this ended on a cliffhanger. Hopefully there will be no cringes in the next book.
Doll Bones The doll is the fantastical part of this plot she is creepy and frequently irks the reader while the kids carry her to her resting place. I may be reading way too far into it, but I felt like it was an overall portrayal of finding peace with one's life given your situation - the doll trying to find her resting place, the kids trying to deal with their parents and growing up.
Distorted Aly is devastated! How can she get over from what Paul did to her? Can she move past it?? Can you forgive him??? Or does she belong with Ethan? She knows he loves her but can she love him back the way he deserves? I can say this book has a great HEA and leaves the door open for a second book for one of the male characters that doesn't get the girl... Who will it be, Team Paul or Team Ethan?? Does she pick Paul, the man she has loved for 3 years and has always held her heart? Or does she pick Ethan, the equally handsome best friend that has always been there for her? You will have to read to find out!
Dark Secrets Ara-Rose asks herself the same question. She’s been torn away from her old life, thrown into a new one in a new country, and in the midst of death, heartache and depression, she finds herself in love with a vampire—one who kills people with his teeth! But the vampire is forbidden to fall for this human, and at the point Ara-Rose decides she can’t live without him, he pulls away and leaves her falling back to the darkness he woke her from. She will be caught up in a century-old feud among brothers, and the fight for love becomes a fight for her life.
Disguise After the first, intense chapter, the reading went slow, but picked up speed and became more engaging towards the end of the book, when the reader is looking to see how all the emotional loose ends will be tied up. An emotional read at times, but sometimes the narration seems a little distant. And the characters are not overly engaging and developed, but the suspense will the truth ultimately be revealed? did hold my interest.
Cursive I laughed while tears are running down my face. The characters made you wish you were living inside the book with them. It is a very touching story. The only thing I didn't like was the pet name Jace called asilyn.
Blindside (Dev Conrad) When liberal incumbent Jeff Ward’s father Tom persuades Dev to spend some time with his son’s flailing campaign, Jeff’s speechwriter Jim Waters hasn’t yet been shot to death. And Tom can’t even identify the other problems. But it’s clear that trouble is afoot. Someone close to Ward is evidently leaking sensitive information to Rusty Burkhart, his millionaire right-wing challenger. David Nolan, the candidate’s lifelong friend and chief of staff, disappears almost the moment Dev first pokes his nose into the campaign tent. And Dev soon learns that Ward is being blackmailed over a steamy videotape starring him and a prostitute.
Blade Song The mystery Kit is trying to solve seemed a bit obvious, but I loved watching Kit use her Aneira skills to uncover the plot. Her skill set is rather unique in the growing UF genre. Her growing number of allies and friends brought a lot to the table and showed just where Kit is in the pecking order of the non-human world she lives in. The worldbuilding was done well and was very interesting.
Bird While most of the novel feel flat for me, I must admit that Murphy does an outstanding job with her characters. I went into this read hoping that the whole novel would be whimsical, but I am happy to settle with just the characters fitting this description. Miranda was a very fun character. Her background and family history are left very mysterious, and all that is really known about her is that she is often carried off by the wind. I found her affinity with the wind to be totally adorable. Add in her love of kites... and I was totally sold on Miranda. She was cute with a capital C.
Big Red Tequila This was the first mystery book that wasn't just about a brutal murderer or sick person. This was a murder, that wasn't a serial killer, not the kind of thing that would give you nightmares. It was just a normal guy's life mixed in with the capture of his ex-girlfriend. I loved every word of the story, and Robert Johnson was an incredibly clever character! I recommend this book to anyone who has half a sense of humor and the need to read a cleverly put together story that feels like it's coming right from the person's mouth!
Beyond Here Lies Nothing: The Concrete Grove Trilogy
Beyond Here Lies Nothing is a super page turner that's dark, delicious, and evil. The characters are all wounded in some way, which totally works with the material. This book will intrigue and also repulse and entertain all at once. Love this author, and this trilogy is some of the best new horror I've read in some time. Get all three! To describe this guy's work is like trying to describe what floats around in the ether. This is the kind of horror McMahon writes.
Best Kept Secrets I had a problem accepting the fact that Reede and Junior were both involved with her mother Celina and now wanted Alex the daughter. One could easily have been her stepfather had Celina not died first. I also found that I was angry at Reede most of the time because he was plain nasty to Alex throughout most of the book. I couldn't stand it that he treated her with so much disrespect. He's actually a good guy (deep deep down) but his mean attitude stemmed from an overwhelming desire to avoid the daughter of the woman he loved that had now filled his thoughts. (At least he acknowledges it's wrong). Junior, in my opinion would have been better for her in some ways as he was always kind to her, but he was such a 'Papa Pleaser'. Lastly, a few issues were never brought to justice and I'm not talking about the murder. Nevertheless, the ending caught me by surprise and the epilogue was good enought to merit the 4-1/2 star rating...
Bella Summer Takes a Chance Bella's story had me intrigued right from the beginning. From the moment she breaks up with her boyfriend of a very long time, I wanted to see where life would take her, personally and professionally. I loved the strong bond that "B"
has with her friends. While I sometimes felt that their lives took over, sometimes way too much, I understood it by the time the book was over and think that it helped complete her story that there are many, many ways to "love" someone.
Beginnings: Worlds of Honor 6 The hottest military science fiction series of all time continues. The mission: to boldly explore David Weber’s Honorverse to deliver all the action, courage, derring-do, and pulse-pounding excitement of space naval adventure with tales set in a world touched by the greatness of one epic heroine: Honor Harrington. This sixth volume in the popular Worlds of Honor series includes stories by 1635: Papal Stakes coauthor and best seller Charles E. Gannon, New York Times bestseller and Star Wars phenomenon, Timothy Zahn and Joelle Presby. It’s rounded out with an allnew David-Weber-authored novella featuring a young Manticoran Royal Navy commander who goes by the name Harrington.
Before the Storm Diane Chamberlain has done it again with BEFORE THE STORM. Not only does this talented and gifted author "find" the voices for the characters in this book, she lets us in to understand their thoughts and feelings. BEFORE THE STORM is a great read for those of any age...Teenagers will relate to the story as well as adults. Chamberlain writes about a family that is typical of the 21st Century-nothing perfect about them-but the love and care abounds. From Andy to Maggie to Mom...they are enchanting characters. I started the book and did not put it down until I finished. I wanted to get to the end to discover the outcome, but once I reached that end, I craved more of the story. Even though there is a sequel, AFTER THE STORM, this is still a stand-alone book. I must add that my journey with the family in this book permitted me to discover and understand some of the issues that plagued them. Thank you, Diane, for your diligence in this PERFECT read...
Becoming Sarah Jamie's glad just to be alive. The last thing she remembers is the horror of her own rape and murder. When she opens her eyes again, she is Sarah Winslow, a spoiled rich girl who may or may not have committed suicide. Jamie is determined to reassure her grieving mother and best friend, then avenge the death of her "other" body.
Be Mine Business takes a backseat when successful ad executive Emily Tate meets Richard Parker. He's an accountant who's been sent to keep her in line and under budget in her ad campaign for a sensual new perfume called Sizzle. And if Emily's not careful, she could well melt in Richard's hands.
Balance of Power Mr. Huston, like a lot of lawyers has taken to writing and I think his debut novel was a fine first effort. I look forward to his next effort because this one reminds me of the early Tom Clancy. I just hope that he doesn't run out of steam (or plausible story lines) like Tom Clancy seems to have done of late. While Mr. Clancy seems to have invented the techno-thriller as a genre, there have been many who followed his example and provided the reading public with hours of reading entertainment. I wish Mr. Huston good fortune in his writing career. He may well be Tom Clancy's heir in the political-military thriller arena.
Banquo's Ghosts The writing is smart, crisp and funny. Mr. Lowry and his ruthless, wordsmith-henchman, Korman, take every opportunity to skewer liberal media types. In one hilarious scene, a socialite publisher (who looks suspiciously like Arianna Huffington) conducts a press conference to welcome an Iranian mission to the United Nations. The reporters toss rhetorical questions like slow-motion mushballs over the plate: "In your experience with international inspecting bodies have you ever had the opportunity to raise the question about nuclear inspections of United States facilities or Israeli facilities? And if so, when and with whom both in Washington and Jerusalem?"
As Twilight Falls I read the book in one day, I am a fan of Amanda Ashley books , she is an awesome writer, I love all her books,I had hard time to put the book down, it was awesome, her books are clean, not explicit or sexual content and yet very sexy and sensual.
A Hidden Place A Hidden Place is an elegant example of Wilson's prowess. Much of the book is taken up describing the world and lives of several people in Haute Montagne, a dusty, Depression-era farm town somewhere in the American plains. Wilson makes you feel the pace of life there, the character of the people, the heat of summer and the rustle of the wind through the wheat. It is not until well into the book that you realize something, well, sci-fi-ish is going on.
A Cast of Stones (The Staff and the Sword) This boy, who doubts his own self-worth, discovers talents that he never knew existed, and from those talents, royalty will be addressed. Errol quickly learns how to fight, and while easily challenged, never forgotten by those who oppose him. And with the ability to exceed all expectations, it seems that this boy, who only in the beginning, wanted a drink, is learning a thing or two about himself.
A Day at the Office The characters were all likeable, which made it an easy read, and I found myself wanting to know how things would turn out for them, which kept the pages turning fast.
A Girl Called Badger (Valley of the Sleeping Birds, Book 1) Great job writing this book. It was smooth and flowed very well. Keep up the good work. My brother recommended this book and I am glad he did.

Effective Cycling English | 2012 | ISBN: 0262516942 | ISBN-13: 9780262516945 | 824 pages | PDF | 16,1 MB Effective Cycling is an essential handbook for cyclists from beginner to expert, whether daily commuters or weekend pleasure trippers. This thoroughly updated seventh edition offers cyclists the information they need for riding a bicycle under all conditions: on congested city streets or winding mountain roads, day or night, rain or shine. It describes the sheer physical joy of cycling and provides the nuts-and-bolts details of how to choose a bicycle, maintain it, and use it in the most efficient manner. Effective Cycling covers the bicycle itself, repairs and maintenance, basic and advanced cycling skills, and how traffic is organized. It describes cycling with friends, bicycle tours, increasing physical endurance, racing, and even finding a cyclist as marriage partner. Throughout, author John Forester emphasizes that cyclists should consider themselves drivers of vehicles in traffic. That means obeying the rules of the road, because when all drivers obey the same rules, they don't have collisions. Forester explains why cyclists should not be afraid to cycle in traffic, and he urges them to resist being shunted off into government-sponsored bike paths as if they were incompetent children. Cyclists fare best, he says, when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles. Effective Cycling will help owners of bicycles dusty from disuse become active cyclists and veteran cyclists improve their techniques and achieve their cycling goals. Each section moves from basic to advanced topics; readers are encouraged get on a bicycle and practice each activity after reading about it.

Jurismania: The Madness of American Law Published: 2000-12-15 | ISBN: 0195107853, 0195130839 | PDF | 208 pages | 9 MB In Jurismania, Paul Campos asserts that our legal system is beginning to exhibit symptoms of serious mental illness. Trials and appeals that stretch out for years and cost millions, 100 page appellate court opinions, 1,000 page statutes before which even lawyers tremble with fear, and a public that grows more litigious every day all testify to a judicial overkill that borders on obsessive-compulsive disorder. Campos locates the source of such madness, paradoxically, in our worship of reason and the resulting belief that all problems are amenable to legal solutions. In insightful discussions of a wide range of cases, from NCAA regulations of student-athletes to the Simpson trial, from our most intractable social disputes over abortion and physician-assisted suicide to the war on drugs and the increasingly fastidious attempts to regulate behavior in public spaces, Campos shows that the mania for more law exacerbates the very problems it seeks to remedy. In his final chapter, the author calls instead for a humbling recognition of the limits of reason and a much more modest role for our legal system. Clearly written and laced with a delicious wit, Jurismania gives us a CAT-scan of the American legal mind at work. It reveals not only that the patient is even worse off than we imagined, but also clarifies the many reasons why.

How to Create the Perfect Wife: Britain's Most Ineligible Bachelor and his Enlightened Quest to Train the Ideal Mate ISBN: 0465065740 | 2013 | MOBI | 360 pages | 3 MB Thomas Day, an 18th-century British writer and radical, knew exactly the sort of woman he wanted to marry. Pure and virginal like an English country maid yet tough and hardy like a Spartan heroine, she would live with him in an isolated cottage, completely subservient to his whims. But after being rejected by a number of spirited young women, Day concluded that the perfect partner he envisioned simply did not exist in frivolous, fashion-obsessed Georgian society. Rather than conceding defeat and giving up his search for the woman of his dreams, however, Day set out to create her. So begins the extraordinary true story at the heart of How to Create the Perfect Wife, prize-winning historian Wendy Moore’s captivating tale of one man’s mission to groom his ideal mate. A few days after he turned twenty-one and inherited a large fortune, Day adopted two young orphans from the Foundling Hospital and, guided by the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the principles of the Enlightenment, attempted to teach them to be model wives. After six months he discarded one girl, calling her “invincibly stupid,” and focused his efforts on his remaining charge. He subjected her to a number of cruel trials—including dropping hot wax on her arms and firing pistols at her skirts—to test her resolve but the young woman, perhaps unsurprisingly, eventually rebelled against her domestic slavery. Day had hoped eventually to marry her, but his peculiar experiment inevitably backfired—though not before he had taken his theories about marriage, education, and femininity to shocking extremes. Stranger than fiction, blending tragedy and farce, How to Create the Perfect Wife is an engrossing tale of the radicalism—and deep contradictions—at the heart of the Enlightenment.

The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy: An Economist Examines the Markets, Power, and Politics of World Trade English | ISBN: 0470287160 | PDF | 339 pages | 2009 | 3 MB During a 1999 protest of the World Trade Organization, Rivoli, an economics professor at Georgetown, looked on as an activist seized the microphone and demanded, "Who made your T-shirt?" Rivoli determined to find out. She interviewed cotton farmers in Texas, factory workers in China, labor champions in the American South and usedclothing vendors in Tanzania. Problems, Rivoli concludes, arise not with the market, but with the suppression of the market. Subsidized farmers, and manufacturers and importers with tax breaks, she argues, succeed because they avoid the risks and competition of unprotected global trade, which in turn forces poorer countries to lower their prices to below subsistence levels in order to compete. Rivoli seems surprised by her own conclusions, and while some
chapters lapse into academic prose and tedious descriptions of bureaucratic maneuvering, her writing is at its best when it considers the social dimensions of a global economy

Great White Fathers: The True Story of Gutzon Borglum and His Obsessive Quest to Create the Mt. Rushmore National Monument English | January 6, 2004 | ISBN-10: 158648205X | 472 pages | PDF | 19,4 Mb Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, hoped that ten thousand years from now, when archaeologists came upon the four sixty-foot presidential heads carved in the Black Hills of South Dakota, they would have a clear and graphic understanding of American civilization. Borglum, the child of Mormon polygamists, had an almost Ahab-like obsession with Colossalism--a scale that matched his ego and the era. He learned how to be a celebrity from Auguste Rodin; how to be a political bully from Teddy Roosevelt. He ran with the Ku Klux Klan and mingled with the rich and famous from Wall Street to Washington. Mount Rushmore was to be his crowning achievement, the newest wonder of the world, the greatest piece of public art since Phidias carved the Parthenon. But like so many episodes in the saga of the American West, what began as a personal dream had to be bailed out by the federal government, a compromise that nearly drove Borglum mad. Nor in the end could he control how his masterpiece would be received. Nor its devastating impact on the Lakota Sioux and the remote Black Hills of South Dakota. Great White Fathers is at once the biography of a man and the biography of a place, told through travelogue, interviews, and investigation of the unusual records that one odd American visionary left behind. It proves that the best American stories are not simple; they are complex and contradictory, at times humorous, at other times tragic.
