Alex Cross, Run DON'T LOOK, ALEX CROSS Top plastic surgeon Elijah Creem is renowned for his skills in the operating room, and for his wild, no-expense-spared "industry parties," bringing in underage exotic dancers and models for nights of drugs, champagne, and uninhibited sex. That is, until Detective Alex Cross busts one of Creem's lavish soirees and ruins his fun. Now Creem is willing to do anything to avoid going to jail. DON'T THINK, ALEX CROSS But Alex doesn't have time to dwell on that case. A beautiful woman has been found murdered in her car, a lock of her hair viciously ripped off. Then a second woman is found hanging from a sixth-floor window with a brutal scar slashed across her stomach. When a third mutilated body is discovered, rumors of three serial killers on the loose send Washington D.C. into an all-out frenzy. JUST RUN Alex is under so much pressure to solve these three grim cases that he hasn't noticed that someone else investigating him-someone so obsessed and so twisted that they'll do anything-ANYTHING- to get the vengeance they require. Alex Cross, Run is James Patterson's most unrelenting story yet-a white-hot, sensational thrill ride with the most extreme and gripping characters Patterson has ever brought to life.

Airtight A cast of characters with agendas both admirable and sinister! With his trademark dialogue, David Rosenfelt has penned a story that could be ripped from the headlines (although I would hate to read about it in the paper)! I read the book within a 24 hour period!

Away If the one you loved was lost, would you do whatever it took to get them back? When Rosemary McGowan's unstable, deranged father reappears after being gone for years, her blissful life with her boyfriend Noah Cash is tossed into diaster. Kidnapped by a madman Rosemary must fight to escape and return to her love, all while battling her desire to know the father she never had. Meanwhile Noah himself must track Rosemary down, hoping that he can rescue her before she's gone away forever.

A Function of Murder (Professor Sophie Knowles) This is a great series if you like math and science. Her character development and plot twist should also appeal to cozy mystery fans.

Demon Lord of Karanda One thing you can depend on David Eddings about is that the plot always thickens. He takes a great deal of pleasure in bringing odd mixes of people together and then letting the interactions take unexpected turns. This volume starts out with Belgarion the unwilling guest of Zakath, Emperor of Mallorea. For nine volumes Zakath has been Belgarion's opponent in one fashion or another, and now we discover that, while he may be headstrong and ruthless, he has positive qualities as well.

Eight Million Gods Nikki is a horror novelist. Her choice of career is dictated by an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that forces her to write stories of death and destruction. She can't control it, doesn't understand it, but can use it to make money anywhere in the world. Currently "anywhere" is in Japan, hiding from her mother who sees Nikki's OCD as proof she's mentally unstable. Nikki's fragile peace starts to fall apart when the police arrest her for the murder of an American expatriate. Someone killed him with a blender.

Elfhunter: A Tale Of Alterra, The World That Is I've read Elfhunter twice and I was never bored! Marks paints vivid portraits of her characters and the setting. I felt like I was pulled into the world of the Elves and that I was going on the adventures of Gaelen and Nelwyn with them. The character interaction was realistic and I felt connected to their emotions. Gorgon is an excellent villain, the embodiment of evil. He should be pitied but it's hard to feel any positive emotion for something so wicked! I can't wait for more books!

Enemy Among Us: A Jordan Wright Thriller ENEMY AMONG US by Randy Reardon is a solid read that should make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up because the plot the evil doers in this thriller are working sounds like something out of today's headlines. It's no stretch to imagine the madmen who fancy themselves the goverment of Iran doing despicable deeds in order to wreak devastation on The United States. Randy Reardon's story is well-plotted, has solid characters you can feel for and credible action and technique.

Frost Let's start with the good. Frost has a really interesting story. I like Ms. Ellison's writing style, Lia's character, and the world she lived in. I saw some of the twists coming, but some were genuinely surprising. I still have a lot of questions

about exactly why the village is located in such a hostile environment as The Frost, but the groundwork was laid to get answers in future books.

Guardians of the West The Guardians of the West was a much appreciated continuation of the Belgariad series. It brought back all my favorite characters, and is also the beginning of a much better series. While this book (and series) will never be extremely high up on my all-time greatest books list, it is extremely high on my all-time most wildly entertaining books list. Don't read this to by emotionally moved or intellectually stimulated, but read it to have a wildly fun time. The characters are somewhat flat, but make up for it with many quirks and outragous personalities. I probably laughed more reading this series than any other book, with the exception of any written by Douglas Adams.

Isles of the Forsaken Usually fantasy or scifi novels about colonial situations only include 2 peoples. Laurie J Marks' Fire Logic includes a representative of a third, slaughtered people, who may have relatives offstage. I can't think of another fantasy novel that has 4 peoples pushed together in excited interaction. Nathaway is an Inning, whose people have just defeated Rothmur in war, and goes to the chain of islands to teach the natives about Inning law and to outlaw bandhota, the ritual healing ceremony.

Ison of the Isles Revolution has broken out in the Forsaken Isles. The islanders have risen up to drive out the Inning Empire, but still they have no one to unite them. Only an Ison can do that - a leader whose heart has been cleansed by the curing of dhota-nur. The power to create an Ison lies in the hands of three people, and none of them are heroes. Spaeth has the ancient Lashnura heritage, but does she have the stature? Harg has the military genius, but he utterly rejects the price of dhota-nur. And Nathaway, the Inning outsider, finds himself unexpectedly holding the key to the future of the Isles. Perilously poised between Inning conquest and the savage powers of ancient forces, the Forsakens need them to decide.

Northfield: A Western Story The James-Younger gang has been done too many times in modern Western fiction, but Johnny D. Boggs has found a fresh perspective in his novel NORTHFIELD. It chronicles the events of the Northfield, Minnesota raid that claimed the lives of two gang members and saw all three of the Younger brothers jailed. It is the story of the downfall of the gang.

Notes from Ghost Town

Olivia struggles to grieve her losses - having to leave art school and return to a new home with her dad, his girlfriend and the girlfriend's adorable daughter is not what she had in mind. But going back to the 'purple house' was even harder. Between all the memories and the community's outcry, they had no choice but to move into a plain condo on the other side of town.

Path of the Incubus The eternal city of Commorragh has been cast into turmoil by the Dysjunction, a cataclysmic disturbance in the very fabric of its existence. As the streets are inundated with horrors from beyond the veil the supreme overlord, Asdrubael Vect, battles to keep his enemies in check and maintain his stranglehold over the riven city. Kabal turns upon kabal, archon against archon as the fires of hell are unleashed. Redemption for Commorragh rests in the hands of a disgraced incubus warrior wrongly accused of triggering the Dysjunction itself.

Pilgrim Soul Ferris handles this dark and difficult subject with a great deal of sensitivity and humanity. The details he gives of some of the dreadful acts that were carried out in the camps are kept to the minimum necessary for the development of the story - Ferris carefully avoids the use of gratuitous detail. Instead he concentrates on how these events are still affecting his characters, including a very moving portrayal of what we would now call post-traumatic stress disorder. As I read, I couldn't help but think of the men of my father's generation, the ones who came back - a generation who mainly bottled up their feelings about their war experiences, who talked of the camaraderie of war but not the horrors, and I felt that in some way Ferris was giving these men a voice that the stiff-upper-lip culture of the time had perhaps denied them.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas This book is extremely well-written it takes the reader to a place and time we should never forget, and it reminds us of the human element in all stories. John Boyne has written a book that could become required reading for all school children, and maybe all adults should read it also, lest we forget. So pick it up and walk with Bruno and Shmuel as they develop a growing friendship just sitting and talking through a barbed- wire-topped chain link fence.

The Death of Antagonis (Space Marine Battles) The Black Dragons fall upon the world of Antagonis, summoned to combat the plague of undeath that has engulfed the planet. Allying themselves with Inquisitor Werner Lettinger and a force of Sisters of Battle, the Black Dragons endeavour to save the souls of the Imperial citizens who have succumbed to the contagion. But there is more than a mere infection at play – the dread forces of Chaos lie behind the outbreak, and the Black Dragons stand in the way of the Dark Gods’ victory.

The Detachment (John Rain Thrillers) One thing to note is that Eisler doesn't hold back his opinions about global (especially U.S) politics and policy. Being a former CIA agent, he sheds a scary visibility on things we read about in the news, but from another angle. He's either hyper-cynical or hyper-realistic. I am concerned (for him) about the former a scared (for all of us) by the latter. For he writes fictional novels about things that are real. Does he have access to information that the common citizen doesn't?

If so, then damn. I think I need a shot of one of Rain's recommended scotch/whiskeys! What I think Eisler does - and does it so well - is to scour the best news sources (be they "establishment press", blogs, subject matter experts he personally knows, etc) and consolidates it into a plausible story that is current and insightful. What I especially appreciate is that he doesn't take our "protagonists"(??) and make them Jack Bauer superheroes. These are conflicted real characters being exposed to the belly of the beast and acting as brave as they are paranoid. Lastly, I'll add that a day after finishing The Detachment, I continue to be emotionally satisfied. Yes, this is good fiction. But it's also like watching a good friend. What Eisler has succeeded in beyond everything else, is to take us to the abyss, and bring us back craving more.

The Ghosts of Belfast Make no mistake, THE GHOSTS OF BELFAST surpasses its genre. It is a truly stunning debut wrought by a young master of rare talent, insight and truth. No one gets away clean here, including Fegan. I've cut my teeth on the best published works of writers like James Ellroy and Don DeLillo. I have every confidence that young Mr. Neville is superbly capable of joining their ranks in due time. This books'denouement and ending left me stunned, surprised and nearly in tears. Most highly recommended.

The Guardian of Threshold The subject matter is something I find enthralling. The writing style and the plot reminds me of Richard Matheson. For those who are not familiar with the name, Matheson wrote "What Dreams May Come" "I am Legend" and "Stir of Echoes" to name a few. Matheson has the ability to expose the thoughts, feelings, emotions, and what makes the

character ticks when faced with events and issues that call for a decision that cannot be change, even though at times, a leap of faith is required in making that decision.

The Lost Sister The Lost Sister is the sequel to Sisters of Misery we've all been looking for, but while it does address many of the questions its prequel left unanswered, the novel was not quite as spectacular as I thought it'd be. Let me make this clear, The Lost Sister is without a doubt a thrilling story filled with danger, the scandal of recently uncovered secrets, and the mystical wonder of witchcraft and extrasensory perception. But as enthralling as the story is, I often felt the characters were mere puppets of the plot instead of people within a story. Maddie and a select few other characters do experience some growth, but none of these characters ever felt quite real to me. In all actuality, the spirit sightings and other unexplainable events were more believable than the characters. This is because although Hall does a fantastic job of making this novel's plot exciting and unpredictable, she didn't dedicate the same care to developing her characters. I didn't know them and could hardly relate to them most of the time. This doesn't make the story bad in fact, I found this story quite enjoyable. But I did find it a little odd that there were so many loose ends left untied by this novel's finish even though the story just felt like it was over. The Lost Sister could've been greater had it been refined better, but it is still a good read and a page turner. Fans of Hall's debut Sisters of Misery will not want to miss its sequel The Lost Sister. Hall's writing is sure to be enjoyed by fans of Swoon by Nina Malkin, Distant Waves by Suzanne Weyn, Blue is for Nightmares by Laurie Faria Stolarz, and Revealers by Amanda Marrone.

The Mad Scientist's Guide to World Domination: Original Short Fiction for the Modern Evil Genius From Victor Frankenstein to Lex Luthor, from Dr. Moreau to Dr. Doom, readers have long been fascinated by insane plans for world domination and the madmen who devise them. Typically, we see these villains through the eyes of good guys. This anthology, however, explores the world of mad scientists and evil geniuses from their own wonderfully twisted point of view.

The Mary Celeste Brian Freemantle resolves one of the greatest maritime mysteries of all time What happened to the Mary Celeste? A merchant vessel sailing out of New York with an Italy-bound shipment of commercial alcohol, the brigantine began her fateful journey in November 1872. One month later she was sighted on an apparent return course, her sails set but torn, her deck abandoned. The ship was in good condition, with her cargo intact. There was no sign of an attack, but the crew had vanished. What was to follow spawned the most famous maritime ghost story of all time: Convinced of murder and mystery, the British court investigator suppressed evidence to bolster his case. Rumors abounded of sea monster attack, Barbary Coast piracy, and the crew having been sucked from the vessel as it sailed over the site of the fabled Atlantis. Regardless, the mystery remained unsolved. Until now. In this thrilling retelling, Brian Freemantle depicts for the first time how the truth was turned into fantasy and legend, largely through the imagination of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes.

The Princess and the Captain The ending was unexpected and not such a happy ending, but I found it refreshing. Basically, the worst part of this book was the characterisation, which was rather atrocious at points. The villain copped most of it, I'm afraid, but there were other poorly-written ones in there as well. BUT... I've seen worse, and the plot was action-filled and exciting!

The Revisionists In The Revisionists, the apocalypse has already happened in one form or another, and the new world has been created. People from the future go back to the past to "protect" the events in the past to preserve the so-called "perfect present" in the future. They have to get back before the "Hags" (History altering something) who want to prevent bad events in the past (9/11 to give an example) from happening. As you read the book, you see that the present isn't as perfect as you're originally led to believe. You also learn more information that calls into question your understanding of the book premise. Does that sound confusing? It kind of is! But, in a good way! Mystery lovers, history lovers, speculative fiction lovers, buy this book. You won't regret it. (I also loved Mullen's "Last Town on Earth," too.)

The Secret of Ji: Six Heirs There is almost NO humor in this book, something that was a hallmark of Eddings' work. Also, the book is not hard to put down. I remember in 1986 when I found The Belgariad in my local library and read day and night, unable to do anything else until I had finished the series. None of the characters in this book are even a fraction as interesting as any of the characters in Eddings' books.

The Shadows in the Street: A Simon Serrailler Mystery

I enjoy these mysteries tremendously. The characterization is wonderful. All players are fully fleshed out with backstories and personalities. The mystery is intelligent and clever. I had my eye on the culprit but can't really say I solved this one as I also had my eye on a few others! I read the book quickly over the weekend it was one of those can't put it down 'til I'm finished books. The type of mystery found here is best described as a psychological suspense. The pace of the writing keeps in tempo with the pace of the case, at times slow as we bang our heads on desks trying to make sense of it all and then boom! we're off on another lead or another body has been found. Another great entry to the series. Recommended.

The Signal In effect this short novel is a paean to the wild mountains and outdoors, all else is secondary and if ignored really makes it a better book. Mark a troubled man who grew up on a ranch made into one of the guest ranches that have been created to save the failing ranches. Mark resorts to some very shady activities to make money after his father's death. He wants to save his ranch but feels he cannot do what his father did in being a welcoming presence to guests.

The Taste of Salt I liked that Josie challenged a lot of cultural norms she didn't go along with things just because she was supposed to, from her career to her marriage. Southgate presents a snapshot of a marriage that's in trouble and could possibly be saved, without laying the blame for those troubles on either party. There is also a reverence for books, especially how they transformed Josie's father, Ray, that is particularly moving, and felt like a mini story within a larger story. There are many of those mini stories that are more than just scenes or setups or backgrounds in Southgate's words, they are almost complete in and of themselves, and many I found myself rereading to fully capture them. This is a beautiful, haunting book.

TimeRiders: The Pirate Kings I was smelling smoke, I'm surprised it wasn't for real, I was turning the pages that fast! I was waiting for Herbert "Bertie" Wells (a small nod to another famous time traveller writer) to make another appearance, but he drifts through a couple of scenes without much to notice. Hopefully, we'll see more of his character in future books.

Weavers Kate Avery Ellison has become my favorite author. I'm always unable to put her books down once I open to the first page. I enjoy every book I rad immensely and I'm very excited for book 4 (Bluewing) to be released this Spring!

Stupid History: Tales of Stupidity, Strangeness, and Mythconceptions Throughout the Ages English | 2007-05-01 | ISBN: 0740760548 | 320 pages | EPUB | 2.73 mb Why exactly is Paul Revere revered? Was the lightbulb really Thomas Edison's bright idea? Best-selling author Leland Gregory employs his masterful wit to expose historical myths, faux "facts," strange events, and tales of human stupidity throughout history. If it would shock you to learn that Benjamin Franklin didn't discover electricity, you'll appreciate this take on hundreds of historical legends and debacles. Historians and humorists alike may be surprised to learn that: - Samuel Prescott made the famous horseback ride into Concord, not Paul Revere. - As a member of Parliament, Isaac Newton spoke only once. He asked for an open window. - On April 24, 1898, Spain declared war on the U.S., thus starting the Spanish-American War. The U.S. declared war the very next day, but not wanting to be outdone, had the date on the declaration changed from April 25 to April 21. With these and many other stories, leading humorist Leland Gregory once again highlights both the strange and the funny side of humankind.

The Mesh: Why the Future of Business Is Sharing English | 2010-09-23 | ISBN: 1591843715 | 256 pages | EPUB | 408 kb Traditional businesses follow a simple formula: create a product or service, sell it, collect money. But in the last few years a fundamentally different model has taken root-one in which consumers have more choices, more tools, more information, and more peer-to-peer power. Pioneering entrepreneur Lisa Gansky calls it the Mesh and reveals why it will soon dominate the future of business. Mesh companies use social media, wireless networks, and data crunched from every available source to provide people with goods and services at the exact moment they need them, without the burden and expense of owning them outright. Gansky reveals how there is real money to be made and trusted brands and strong communities to be built in helping your customers buy less but use more. Consider the explosive growth of Zipcar. By exploiting the latest technology and making it easy and affordable to have a car whenever you need one, this young company is helping to redefine personal transportation. And deeply worrying established competitors. Gansky shows how the same pattern is playing out with less famous Mesh companies that are reinventing an enormous range of industries: - thredUP enables mail-in kids'-clothing swaps. One year after launching, it has 10,000 members exchanging more than 14,000 items per month. - Kickstarter connects artists who need funding with small donors who want to support them. The firm has helped hundreds of projects raise as much as $200,000 without the usual angst of fundraising. - Groupon harnesses collective buying power to offer daily discounts to its 5 million subscribers. Sixteen months after inception, it has raised over $170 million in venture capital. In the tradition of The Long Tail, The Mesh illustrates a huge new opportunity that's already driving new businesses and renewing old ones. It's your essential guide to the new wave of information-enabled commerce that's also improving our communities and our planet.

Celebrating Failure: The Power of Taking Risks, Making Mistakes and Thinking Big English | 2009-07-20 | ISBN: 1601630646 | 191 pages | EPUB | 370 kb Celebrating Failure is the definitive how-to manual for leaders seeking to embrace the power of failure as a learning tool to improve their organizations and achieve ever-greater goals. The business world (and, lately, the political arena) is convinced that the number one topic is change. Heath posits that it might well be failure, because if you do it right, failure can become a launching pad for change. Heath contends that "positive failures" are not only necessary steps on the path to success, but encourage greater freedom to take risks in pursuit of one's life goals. This counterintuitive but powerful title includes: - Engaging stories of real-life business and personal failure experiences. - Practical steps to apply each chapter's "lessons" and change your approach to risk-taking and failure. - Positive, effective ways to eliminate the "fear of failure" that can hold you back in today's competitive, fast-changing world. Heath's insightful stories lay out his own failures and reveal his human side as a son, father, athlete, and business leader.

After spending three years researching his novel Baked, Mark Haskell Smith turns his focus on the one event that intrigued him in the fascinating world of the cannabis culture: the Cannabis Cup competition. What makes a strain of marijuana award-winning? he wonders. Who would risk everything to grow the good stuff? Is this really a nearly $100 billion a year industry? Alternating between California, the hub of the legalization and decriminalization debate, and Amsterdam, where the world's preeminent cannabis festival takes place each year, Mark discovers a compelling world where science meets agriculture, and hedonism toes the line of criminality. Combining wit, curiosity, and frankness, Heart of Dankness reveals the world of underground botany and outlaw farming, where "strain hunters" risk fines, imprisonment, and reputation to develop amazing weed -- and, ultimately, battle for the coveted Cannabis Cup, and millions of dollars.

Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century English | 2009-12-29 | ISBN: 0143116843 | 512 pages | EPUB | 2.02 mb A military expert reveals how science fiction is fast becoming reality on the battlefield, changing not just how wars are fought, but also the politics, economics, laws, and ethics that surround war itself.

P. W. Singer’s previous two books foretold the rise of private military contractors and the advent of child soldiers— predictions that proved all too accurate. Now, he explores the greatest revolution in military affairs since the atom bomb—the advent of robotic warfare. We are just beginning to see a massive shift in military technology that threatens to make the stuff of I,Robot and the Terminator all too real. More than seven- thousand robotic systems are now in Iraq. Pilots in Nevada are remotely killing terrorists in Afghanistan. Scientists are debating just how smart—and how lethal—to make their current robotic prototypes. And many of the most renowned science fiction authors are secretly consulting for the Pentagon on the next generation. Blending historic evidence with interviews from the field, Singer vividly shows that as these technologies multiply, they will have profound effects on the front lines as well as on the politics back home. Moving humans off the battlefield makes wars easier to start, but more complex to fight. Replacing men with machines may save some lives, but will lower the morale and psychological barriers to killing. The “warrior ethos,” which has long defined soldiers’ identity, will erode, as will the laws of war that have governed military conflict for generations. Paradoxically, these new technologies will also bring war to our doorstep. As other nations and even terrorist organizations start to build or buy their own robotic weapons, the robot revolution could undermine America’s military preeminence. While his analysis is unnerving, there’s an irresistible gee-whiz quality to the innovations Singer uncovers. Wired for War travels from Iraq to see these robots in combat to the latter-day “skunk works” in America’s suburbia, where tomorrow’s technologies of war are quietly being designed. In Singer’s hands, the future of war is as fascinating as it is frightening.

What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures English | 2010-12-14 | ISBN: 0316076201 | 448 pages | EPUB + MOBI | 428 kb + 700 kb What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard-but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century? In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point; Blink; and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from The New Yorker over the same period. Here is the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling inventions of the pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and "hindsight bias" and why it was that everyone in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate. "Good writing," Gladwell says in his preface, "does not succeed or fail on the strength of its ability to persuade. It succeeds or fails on the strength of its ability to engage you, to make you think, to give you a glimpse into someone else's head." What the Dog Saw is yet another example of the buoyant spirit and unflagging curiosity that have made Malcolm Gladwell our most brilliant investigator of the hidden extraordinary.

1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare English | 2006-06-13 | ISBN: 0060088745 | 432 pages | EPUB | 685 kb 1599 was an epochal year for Shakespeare and England. . . Shakespeare wrote four of his most famous plays: Henry the Fifth, Julius Caesar, As You Like It, and, most remarkably, Hamlet; Elizabethans sent off an army to crush an Irish rebellion, weathered an Armada threat from Spain, gambled on a fledgling East India Company, and waited to see who would succeed their aging and childless queen. James Shapiro illuminates both Shakespeare’s staggering achievement and what Elizabethans experienced in the course of 1599, bringing together the news and the intrigue of the times with a wonderful evocation of how Shakespeare worked as an actor, businessman, and playwright. The result is an exceptionally immediate and gripping account of an inspiring moment in history.

Jagger: Rebel, Rock Star, Rambler, Rogue ISBN: 1592406556 | 2011 | EPUB | 320 pages | 2 MB A biography and cultural examination of the Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger's spectacular life and the cultural revolution he led. As the Rolling Stones' legendary front man Mick Jagger remains an enigma. He hasn't given an in-depth interview for a decade and a half and never commented on his friend and partner, Keith Richard's often critical biography. Drawing

on firsthand recollections from rockers, filmmakers, writers, radicals, and other artists who have been transformed by Mick Jagger's work, acclaimed music journalist Marc Spitz has created a unique examination of the Jagger legacy, debunking long held myths and restoring his status as a complicated artist. Combining biography with cultural history, Jagger unfolds like a captivating documentary, a series of episodes tracing the icon's rise from his childhood in middle-class postwar London to his status as a jet-setting knight. A culturally astute, often funny, and painstakingly researched read, Jagger offers a far richer portrait than biographies published previously. The book reveals much about his relationships (with Marianne Faithfull and ex-wives Bianca Jagger and Jerry Hall); his complex, creative partnership with Keith Richards; his friends like John Lennon and David Bowie; and enemies like Hells Angels leader Sonny Barger. Spitz goes even deeper, exploring Jagger's many roles: an authentic soul man; powerful social commentator; sexual liberator; would-be movie star; and yes, sometimes, a shrewd businessman with an enthusiasm for much younger women. The myth of Mick is examined and rebooted for the twenty-first century.

Clint Eastwood: A Biography ISBN: 0679749918 | 1997 | EPUB | 568 pages | 2 MB "Authoritative . . . highly nuanced . . . gives the reader a palpable sense of Mr. Eastwood's career." --The New York Times From the moment The Man With No Name first fixed the screen with his murderous squint, from the first time audiences heard Dirty Harry Callahan growl "Make my day," Clint Eastwood has been an icon of American manhood in all its coolness and ferocity. But that icon is also an actor of surprising subtlety, a filmmaker of vast intelligence and originality--and an intensely private man who eludes the stereotypes with which his fans and critics try to label him. In this in-depth biography, the distinguished film critic Richard Schickel talks with Eastwood's family, friends, and colleagues--and, above all, with his notoriously reticent subject--to produce a portrait more astute and revealing than any we have ever had. Following Eastwood from his unstable childhood through his turbulent love affairs, assessing films from A Fistful of Dollars to the Oscar-winning The Unforgiven, and locating the subversive streak of rage and solitude that runs through all his work, Clint Eastwood is candid and endlessly fascinating, an unerring closeup of one of our brightest stars. "Exhilarating . . . substantial, insightful, and right." --Newsday

Why Catholics Are Right ISBN: 0771023219 | 2011 | EPUB | 240 pages | 2 MB A practicing Catholic defends the faith and offers a passionate response to current anti-Catholic opinion.

In Why Catholics Are Right, author, columnist, and practicing Catholic Michael Coren examines four main aspects of Catholicism as they are encountered, understood, and more importantly, misunderstood today. Beginning with a frank examination of the tragedy of the Catholic clergy abuse scandal, Coren addresses some of them most common attacks on Catholics and Catholicism. Tracing Catholic history, he deconstructs popular and frequent anti-Catholic arguments regarding the Church and the Crusades, the Inquisition, Galileo, and the Holocaust. He examines Catholic theology and central pillars of Catholic belief, explaining why Catholics believe what they do: papal infallibility, immaculate conception, the Church rather than Bible alone. Finally, he explores the dignity of life argument and why it is so important to Catholicism. In this challenging and thought-provoking book, Michael Coren demolishes often propagated myths about the Church's beliefs and teachings, and in doing so, opens a window onto Catholicism, which, he writes, "is as important now as it ever was and perhaps even more necessary."

Sugar in the Blood: A Family's Story of Slavery and Empire ISBN: 0307272834 | 2012 | EPUB | 384 pages | 4 MB In the late 1630s, lured by the promise of the New World, Andrea Stuart’s earliest known maternal ancestor, George Ashby, set sail from England to settle in Barbados. He fell into the life of a sugar plantation owner by mere chance, but by the time he harvested his first crop, a revolution was fully under way: the farming of sugar cane, and the swiftly increasing demands for sugar worldwide, would not only lift George Ashby from abject poverty and shape the lives of his descendants, but it would also bind together ambitious white entrepreneurs and enslaved black workers in a strangling embrace. Stuart uses her own family story—from the seventeenth century through the present—as the pivot for this epic tale of migration, settlement, survival, slavery and the making of the Americas. As it grew, the sugar trade enriched Europe as never before, financing the Industrial Revolution and fuelling the Enlightenment. And, as well, it became the basis of many economies in South America, played an important part in the evolution of the United States as a world power and transformed the Caribbean into an archipelago of riches. But this sweet and hugely profitable trade—“white gold,” as it was known—had profoundly less palatable consequences in its precipitation of the enslavement of Africans to work the fields on the islands and, ultimately, throughout the American continents. Interspersing the tectonic shifts of colonial history with her family’s experience, Stuart explores the interconnected themes of settlement, sugar and slavery with extraordinary subtlety and sensitivity. In examining how these forces shaped her own family—its genealogy, intimate relationships, circumstances of birth, varying hues of skin—she illuminates how her family, among millions of others like it, in turn transformed the society in which they lived, and how that interchange continues to this day. Shifting between personal and global history, Stuart gives us a deepened understanding of the connections between continents, between black and white, between men and women, between the free and the enslaved. It is a story brought to life with riveting and unparalleled immediacy, a story of fundamental importance to the making of our world.

Hitler's Spy Chief: The Wilhelm Canaris Betrayal: the Intelligence Campaign Against Adolf Hitler ISBN: 1605983705 | 2011 | EPUB | 352 pages | 569 KB A remarkable tale of espionage and intrigue—the story of Wilhelm Canaris, Hitler’s intelligence chief, and his role in the conspiracy to assassinate the Fuhrer. Admiral Wilhelm Canaris was appointed by Hitler to head the Abwehr (the German secret service) eighteen months after the Nazis came to power. But Canaris turned against the Fuhrer and the Nazi regime, believing that Hitler would start a war Germany could not win. In 1938 he was involved in an attempted coup, undermined by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. In 1940 he sabotaged the German plan to invade England, and fed General Franco vital information that helped him keep Spain out of the war. For years he played a dangerous double game, desperately trying to keep one step ahead of the Gestapo. The SS chief, Heinrich Himmler, became suspicious of Canaris and by 1944, when Abwehr personnel were involved in the attempted assassination of Hitler, he had the evidence to arrest Canaris himself. Canaris was executed a few weeks before the end of the war. In a riveting true story of intrigue and espionage, Richard Bassett reveals how Admiral Canaris’s secret work against the German leadership changed the course of World War II. 16 pages of black & white photographs

Deceiving Hitler: Double-Cross and Deception in World War II ISBN: 1846031354 | 2008 | EPUB | 352 pages | 8 MB

During the Second World War the Allies controlled every active German agent in Britain. This placed Allied Intelligence services in a unique position. The Allies were able to feed spurious information back to Germany which mixed scraps of truthful information with misleading details in a believable mix of information. Out of this process of deception grew an entire organization which specialized in the manufacture of elaborate deceptions to confuse and hinder Axis powers. To maintain the deception, complex camouflage and tactical deception operations were to be undertaken on the ground, involving the use of inflatable tanks, fake towns which misdirected the German blitz, bogus troop formations and a catalog of Hollywood-style special effects. At times bizarre and often intriguing, these operations were used in all the major theaters of the war and saved countless Allied lives. From disappearing North African pipelines to bogus radio stations, this book is an entertaining and absorbing account of the deceptions used by the Allies in World War II. The third in a series of books by Terry Crowdy that exposes the underworld of military history, Deception uses rare, recently declassified information and photographs, much of which is being made available to the public for the first time to reveal the art of military misdirection.

Walking on Eggs: The Astonishing Discovery of Thousands of Dinosaur Eggs in the Badlands of Patagonia

2001 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0743212118 | PDF | 10,5 MB In 1997, paleontologists Chiappe and Dingus (Discovering Dinosaurs) led an expedition into the remote reaches of Patagonia. Just days into the excursion, the archeologists discovered the remains of a nesting site for a sauropod, a large, four-legged, thick-necked, vegetarian, semi-aquatic dinosaur. Dating back about 80 million years, the giant rookery was strewn with thousands of broken and unhatched fossilized eggs. Besides providing science long-sought proof that sauropods were egg-laying creatures, this field of prehistoric eggs also yielded the first fossils of embryonic dinosaur skin. Although the authors furnish detailed geological and paleontological background information, they write without scientific jargon, fortunately for lay readers. Through the mostly conversational narrative, an intriguing story unfolds that offers insights into the mysteries surrounding this astounding archeological find. When were these eggs laid? What was the ancient geological environment? The climate? What destroyed the nests and eggs? Which predators hunted these local sauropods? The authors take the reader on a tour of deductive and inductive reasoning in order to establish plausible answers to these complex questions. This fascinating description of the vicissitudes of a successful dig from the exhilaration of an extraordinary skeletal find and the mundane minutiae that dominate a paleontologist's life in the field to the overwhelming and fleeting media response makes the reader feel like a member of the mission.

Kansha: Celebrating Japan's Vegan and Vegetarian Traditions English | 2010-10-19 | ISBN: 1580089550 | 304 pages | EPUB + MOBI | 9.84 mb + 9.30 mb The celebration of Japan’s vegan and vegetarian traditions begins with kansha—appreciation—an expression of gratitude for nature’s gifts and the efforts and ingenuity of those who transform nature’s bounty into marvelous food. The spirit of kansha, deeply rooted in Buddhist philosophy and practice, encourages all cooks to prepare nutritionally sound and aesthetically satisfying meals that avoid waste, conserve energy, and preserve our natural resources. In these pages, with kansha as credo, Japan culinary authority Elizabeth Andoh offers more than 100 carefully crafted vegan recipes. She has culled classics from shōjin ryōri, or Buddhist temple cuisine (Creamy Sesame Pudding, Glazed Eel Look-Alike); gathered essentials of macrobiotic cooking (Toasted Hand-Pressed Brown Rice with Hijiki, Robust Miso); selected dishes rooted in history (Skillet-Scrambled Tofu with Leafy Greens, Pungent Pickles); and included inventive modern fare (Eggplant Sushi, Tōfu-Tōfu Burgers). Andoh invites you to practice kansha in your own cooking, and she delights in demonstrating how “nothing goes to waste in the kansha kitchen.” In one especially satisfying example, she transforms each part of a single daikon—from the tapered tip to the tuft of greens, including the peels that most cooks would simply compost—into an array of wholesome, flavorful dishes. Decades of living immersed in Japanese culture and years of culinary training have given Andoh a unique platform from which to teach. She shares her deep knowledge of the cuisine in the two-part A Guide to the Kansha Kitchen. In the first section, she explains basic cutting techniques, cooking methods, and equipment that will help you enhance flavor, eliminate waste, and speed meal preparation. In the second, Andoh demystifies ingredients that are staples in Japanese pantries, but may be new to you; they will boost your kitchen repertoire—vegan or omnivore—to new heights. Stunning images by award-winning photographer Leigh Beisch complete Kansha, a pioneering volume sure to inspire as it instructs.
