The Heist This book is a collaboration between Monk author Lee Goldberg and Janet Evanovich. It turns out to be a lighthearted bitof-the-same from these authors. I got exactly what I had expected from them. It reads like a TV cop show (hmmm, go figure). There was nothing about the writing that overly impressed me. There were no big ah-ha moments. I won't give any spoilers about the relationship, but suffice it to say that it is pretty predictable...but predictable in a kind of fun and comforting way. There were plenty of clever moments that made me smile a little. A couple of them made me laugh out loud.
Tangerine Paul tells the story very well. Many of the things he says and thinks are very touching. I think Paul describes his point of view and what he thinks very well. I like the fact that he doesn't care if he isn't the star of the family or town, but still cares about playing hard in every soccer game and trying to do well for his team.
Our Kind of Traitor OKT is a square assault on corruption and rent-seeking behaviour by key members of Britain's establishment in government, parliament, the press, and esp. the sacred square mile of the City, where blood money of many types and provenances is banked, invested, transferred at lightning speed to fresher pastures and back again, for no purpose or wider benefit to wider humanity. The Square Mile and its many paid advocates welcome the establishment of the banking arm of the Arena Conglomerate of the Seven Brotherhoods warmly, with its promise of bringing hundreds of billions to London and of plentiful investments in moribund industries in a near-bankrupt country.
Emily Goes to Exeter In "Emily Goes to Exeter" we are introduced to Miss Hannah Pym, a former housekeeper who has come into a small inheritance and decided to use her money on her life-long ambition. All her life she has watched the "Flying Machine" pass by her window, and finally she will have the chance of her own for Adventure! For Living Life! I thought this was one of Marion Chesney's best books, Miss Hannah comes across as a very vivid and sympathetic character, and we are caught up in her until-now dull life, the sad life of her former employees, and finally her chance for adventure. Nor does Ms. Chesney let her down, as in page after page, there is never a dull moment!
Death in Venice A staid German author is suddenly inspired through the sight of a stranger to travel and selects Venice as his destination. Once he is there he becomes obsessed with a young boy he spies on the beach and begins stalking him as the city is being stalked by cholera. This is a taut psychological examination of obsession and the uncharacteristic behavior a person can be driven to under it's influence.
Wildtrack: A Novel of Suspense The first thing the reader becomes aware of is that Cornwell really knows sailing. He know all the terminology, and ins and outs of sail craft. His characters are plausible and appealing. The plot develops well and has some surprising twists. Bernard Cornwell is a master story teller. Anyone who loves the sea and adventure stories will love this book.
Where All the Dead Lie Joyce Bean does a beautiful job of narrating this suspenseful tale. She brings Taylor's confusion and fears to life. WHERE ALL THE DEAD LIE is a good mix of suspense, mystery and a little Hitchcock-style intrigue on the side. A perfect book for anytime but especially on a cold, rainy night as the wind howls outside. Pull the covers up, settle in and get lost in Taylor's mind.
The Rosetta Codex The characters fell flat for me. The hero, Cale, is frustratingly non-sympathetic for much of the book. The supporting cast seems to be completely defined by broad and simple character traits: Sidonie is scarred from her ordeals across the Divide, but still loyal Cicero is old and obsessed with the study of the Jaaprana Blackburn is an antagonist who nonetheless has a soft spot in his heart (or seems to) for Cale the Sarakheen are Evil. My biggest problem was that the plot seemed to run at the same speed and intensity the entire book there was no real rising action, no climax, and no resolution. The book, in my opinion, starts on one note and really ends on the same note.
The Protector Well-developed bad guys you love to hate and get to see taken down, a healthy number of totally hot, unquestionably honorable good guys to fall in love with, lots of charismatic characters complete with flaws as well as admirable qualities, all contained in an exciting, believable plot: this book has EVERYTHING I've come to expect from one of Marliss Melton's books! Loved, loved, loved it!
The Phoenix Apostles The authors of the Cotten Stone series of religious thrillers introduce a new heroine in The Phoenix Apostles. Seneca Hunt is a reporter covering an archaeological dig in Mexico City, the examination by remote camera of the recently discovered tomb of Montezuma II, when her life is upended by an explosion. But what looks initially like a terrorist act turns out to be far more complicated. There's a would-be messiah out to save the world by unsavory means, and he's rounding up apostles to give him a hand the canonical twelve, but he's not simply calling them from their fishing boats to come join him. This messiah uses cutting-edge technology to form his posse. The fate of the world is very much at stake. Mix in a love interest, some black ops intrigue, an ailing mother, daddy issues, and a hint of The Boys from Brazil, and you've got a really fun page turner. The dialogue can be a little stilted, but otherwise I really liked the book, and I'd like to see more of Seneca in future titles.
The Myst Reader The books are very entertaining and easy to read. The first book starts with a bang, the relationship between the main character (Atrus) and his father Gehn are determined right from the moment he was born. After that an interesting tale is told, about the D'ni, an ancient underground culture and the descripting art of writing they developped, which makes it possible to travel to the worlds written. This is the perfect basis for endless twists and plots, and the books are over before you even realize it, making you crave for more. These are entertaining books for everybody, but for those who played any of the Myst games or Uru, they are an absolute MUST. They complement and explain the games in such a way that they enrich the games no end.
Belinda Goes to Bath I enjoyed this book, though not as much as the first, as the novelty has worn off a bit. However, Miss Pym's character continues to be a delightful mix of moral sense and romantic sensibility and her machinations are amusing to watch. Her observations about the people around her ring true and the ways she works to bring them each happiness are imaginative and insightful. I also enjoy the historical tidbits that Ms. Chesney throws in, like the treatment of concussions: shaving the patient's head and applying leeches! Like a spicier version of Georgette Heyer's novels, this series is perfect for anyone with a penchant for historical or regency romance.
Animal Dreams Animal Dreams is a rich tapestry woven of many threads: mystery, love, politics, environment, benelovance, history, culture, and the finding of oneself. When Codi Noline returns to her hometown of Grace, Arizona, she must confront all these things while taking care of an ailing father, worrying about her sister in the fields of Nicaragua, and dealing with the deterioration of the town's river. She is conflicted with who she is and where she is going she repeatedly reminds her new lover she is not going to stay yet has no idea why. While Codi searches for something to look for, she unearths a town with many secrets and many stories. Like Codi, the reader learns about the powers of culture and history of politics and environmentalism and of family and love. Kingsolver's ability to catch colors, emotions, and life makes for a very engaging, beautifully-written book.
The River of No Return The River of No Return is a delight. I started reading and found it nearly impossible to do anything else with my time. This story grabs, and doesn't let go. A mixture of fantasy, history, comedy, adventure, and romance, it manages to sample each genre and then transcend them all. Time travel is a powerful hook for me, particularly this sort of it-happens-no-longpseudo-scientific-explanation necessary. It reminded me of Jack Finney's Time and Again and also of Connie Willis' novels To Say Nothing of the Dog and The Doomsday Book.
The Paris Game Sera finds herself in a dangerous situation after borrowing money from a gangster. She works in a seedy area of the city where Marc, an old love, appears back in her life, but she is distracted by the attentions of a handsome stranger. Soon, she suspects neither of them is the man she believes them to be. With her future depending on the result of a wager made with Marc, Sera's well-being hangs by a thread. Can Sera reclaim control of her life? Or are there too many factors working against her? And will Marc prove a help or a hindrance?
The Next Right Thing Randy searches for Terry's killer, things become hairy and complex. Who is involved and what does the A.A. crowd have to do with it? This is a good novel that is in your face and takes you for a wild ride.
The List of My Desires What would it take to change your life? Jocelyne is 47. She lives in a small provincial French town, runs her own dressmaking shop, has been married to the same man for what seems like an eternity, has had two children and lives a very ordinary existence. In fact so ordinary that she is beginning to wonder what happened to her, to all those dreams she had when she was seventeen. Then comes the chance to change her life completely but should she? For when Jocelyne begins to look at her life and its small pleasures - her friendship with the twins who run the hairdresser next door, her weekends away, her sewing blog - she realises that maybe ordinary isn't so bad. Until the decision is taken out of her hands...The List of my Desires is a wonderfully heart-warming novel about what we value in life and the search for happiness.
The Last Telegram I loved Lily. From her journey into silk as a young girl, to an old lady who had survived it all she was my favorite character. The relationship between Stefan and Lily showed exactly how much they were meant for each other. The chapters with their story in them were my absolute favorite. The Last Telegram is perfect. I was captured by the first page. This is a story I am sure I will read over and over.
The King's Man (The Chronicles of King Rolen's Kin) This was an adventurous on a never ending sea of disaster! Every time our hero tried to catch a break, a wave of misfortune dashed him upon the rocks of ever increasing gloom.
The First Warm Evening of the Year The writing is good but perhaps a bit formulaic (that's why a four), but this is what makes this novel a good summer read for exactly what the title says: the first warm evening of the year.
The Firefly Cafe Heartwarming. I enjoy a fast-paced, wrench me into the world read, which is exactly what The Firefly Cafe delivered. The hero, Dylan, is the bad boy billionaire with a good heart. Love to see a bad boy redeemed, which is exactly what Lily Everett delivers. And there's nothing more satisfying than being able to read an entire story without stopping. Great novella! Can't wait to read the next novella and Sanctuary Island at the end of the month!
The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester I liked this book a lot, it was really detailed. Even though there weren't any pictures in the book, the author described things so well that I could imagine everything very clearly. The only girls in the story were Owen's enemies, but I think girls would still like the rest of the book.
The Darkening Field Into this mix comes Korolev's old "friends" from the Moscow Thieves, and the tale takes a whole new twist. There is a lot of excitement in the book, and quite a bit of action. Sometime it's difficult to know exactly what's happening, but that's Korolev's view also, and it fits the tone of the book. How does Korolov get everything settled without endangering his own
potential transport to the Gulag if he doesn't please his superiors? It's white knuckle time quite often, and the reader tends to be on the edge of his seat.
The Crime of Julian Wells Striking, lyrical, intelligent and sometimes difficult to read, The Crime of Julian Wells is Cook's latest literally jewel. A quick read, but a story that will stay with you and challenge you, maybe even alter your outlook on the morality of man, long after the final page. Highly recommended.
The Boy Next Door These characters come alive. You can identify with each of them, and feel like you were a part of story. I didn't want it to end. I love a book so well written that you actually miss the characters when the book has ended!
The Beast and the Homecoming Queen I liked this story, I do love shifters in any shape or form. I love the 2 to 1 ratio here, how many woman can say they have two men at their feet? Quinn is a very strong girl, although she hasn't quite realized it yet. Kaden and Justin both pull at her heart but it's Justin that wins it. The boys both help her to get over her father's death, and to start feeling like her house is a home again. I am not going to say any more because I don't want to give anything away.
The Arrivals This is Melissa's second "adult" book and involves a fantastical place called The Wasteland. The Wasteland is a weird area that's a mix of gun-slinging Western and fantastical magic. The thing about the Wasteland is you have to kill someone to get there. This is where we meet Chloe, who has arrived in the town and realizes she's in a band of misfit murderers. Enter Jack, Kitty and Edgar. They all form a crazy sort of friendship/alliance. This is Melissa Marr we are talking about (the amazing Graveminder author), so the story is complex and crazy. This, of course, means I'm highly hoping there will be a series or at least a sequel to this novel.
Terminus
The book is tight, action-packed, well-written and generally well edited - well above most of the self published horror novels on the market. Adam Baker has incredible talent and paints a terrifying, grim world that still allows human beings to rise to a level of heroism you would never anticipate.
Tender as Hellfire Tender As Hell Fire is an inspiring story of adolescence and the general problems that go along with it. Exceptional writing makes this a book to own and read over and over again. This is definitely a first novel that forecasts further success.
Taking Back Forever Maryah is trying to learn about her past and Harmony is trying to do everything in her (and everyone else's power) to find her soulmate. It's a story about love and the thinks you will do for it. Not just love for yoru soul mate, but for your family. And the Kindrily knows how to redfine family. I loved learning more about the Kindrily's world and how each member's powers affect the group and how they can use it for the greater good. This is a must read if you are looking for a fantasy novel with a love story that isn't like anything you've read before.
Scandal in the Night: The Reckless Brides Miss Essex does it again. Another Must Read book you can't put down. Bravo! Looking forward to the next boo in this wonderful series.
Reunited in Danger (Entangled Suspense) Joya Fields is really good at keeping the reader out of the loop until at just the right moment. Once all the pieces start to fit together, watch out! My stomach was in knots as everything unfolded with all the action and danger. As a huge fan of her stories, I know Joya Fields can combine endearing romance with amazing suspense, and that is exactly what I got with Reunited in Danger.
Requiem (The Psalms of Isaak) If you liked the first three books, this one will keep you turning the pages. I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day. I should have paced myself. All I can do is sit back and wait for Hymn sometime in 2014.
Red Madrassa: Algardis #1 This author has created a rich and detailed world. The characters are believable and interesting. Their challenges are gripping. My only complaint is that I have to wait for part two! Hurry, Ms. Edun. What happens next?
Planetary Assault (Star Force Series) As soon as I saw who the authors were I had to have this! I am giving this collection 5 stars just on the strength of the authors in it. I think assembling stories from these three greats deserves ten stars, but we don't have that option. Fantastic!
Park and Violet This author knows how to write a great story about two fascinating characters who, together, throw off enough sparks to light up a city. Let's face it, if you're looking to read this book you like the genre and this one beats most of the others out there! It has amazing characters, sexual chemistry and the heroine's back story was a killer.
Over the Boss' Knee It’s nothing sexual ... her boss is older and she’s worked for him a long time. But the second his hand swats her behind, she feels things she’s never felt before. Then she cannot wait for more of her boss’ disciplinary spanking.
You Look Different in Real Life Readers of John Green, Sarah Dessen, and Laurie Halse Anderson will be touched by the emotional depth and realistic characters of Jennifer Castle’s YA novel You Look Different in Real Life. Justine charmed the nation in a documentary film featuring five kindergartners. Five years later, her edgy sense of humor made her the star of a second movie that caught up with the lives of the same five kids.
William Shakespeare's Star Wars This is just a brilliant adaptation of Star Wars into the style of Shakespeare. Those two things are so different that my first reaction was "This is some kind of joke, right?" But while there's a great deal of humor to be found here, the project is not a parody. Not at all. It's a celebration of two hitherto separate but equally great triumphs of storytelling.
Wild Roses
WILD ROSES is a moving novel that is beautifully crafted. Deb Caletti has a way with words like her characters have with music. She reaches deep into the souls of her characters and stirs up emotions that readers will revel in. Caletti has already proven herself as a wonderful wordsmith with her past novels, and WILD ROSES doesn't let us down.
Who Wants to Marry a Billionaire? Aside from the Pretty Woman scene, (walk into a high brow store in street clothes to have the clerks snub you) the book was good. A self-absorbed playboy blackmails a woman into pretending to be his fiance so he can buy a resort. Tables turn on him as he falls in live with her instead.
While I'm Falling What I found enjoyable about this story (and lets face it, it's a story told over and over) is that it gave a fresh and funny look at very real problems and possible scenerios and even solutions. It was by no means deep and profound but it worked and I like it. I loved these characters. It made me laugh and yes it even brought a tear to my eye.
Wednesdays in the Tower (Tuesdays at the Castle) When her brother Rolf dares her to catch magical Castle Glower creating a new room, Princess Celie takes the challenge! No one knows the Castle better than she does. But as usual, the Castle has ideas of its own.Celie finds the new room first, and inside it is hidden a giant egg. It looks like The Castle wants Celie to care for the egg and whatever creature it hatches! Celie hadn't bargained for a pet, and caring for this one will prove to be especially tricky, once Celie and her siblings realize what else the Castle is hiding....
Watch Over Me Oh, I don't think I will ever be able to express with words how much I enjoyed this book! Maybe if you were able to see the river of tears I cried while reading it, you could understand me. Eilidh is such a loveable character, so unfortunate, yet so strong.
Warriors Super Edition: Tallstar's Revenge
I recommend this book to anyone who loves Warriors, who love the thrill of the wind between their whiskers, the blood pumping through them as they charge down to face the enemy, who relax in the sun during greenleaf, and the thrill of entertaining kits on their first wonder around camp...
V Wars I guess I may be biased. I chose this book as I am a huge J. Mayberry fan... from Joe Ledger to Rot & Ruin. He is an author I really enjoy. This book gives Vampires a fresh face, and is a thoroughly enjoyable "Snicker Bar".
Outlaw: Waylon, Willie, Kris, and the Renegades of Nashville Outlaw: Waylon, Willie, Kris, and the Renegades of Nashville by Michael Streissguth (!t books, 304 pages, June 4, 2013, $26.99) describes in vivid detail a time of turmoil in Nashville and in the music business when country music, as represented by the corporate image or RCA's country music division with Chet Atkins as the chief of the Nashville office, had reached a point of over production and artistic decadence which challenged its listenership and sales.
Nobody's Prize (Princesses of Myth) Helen seemed a little to unobservant at times for my taste, but at others she was quick witted and cunning. She nearly managed to think her way out of every problem she got herself into (which was a lot), and the ones she couldn't think her way out of, she just used her sword.
Noble V: Greylancer If you have yet to experience the charms of this unique franchise, I would recommend familiarizing yourself with the original novel series first, to better appreciate the added depth and easter eggs that Noble V provides. If you're already fan of the Vampire Hunter D series, this title is a definite must read, though I doubt you'll need anyone to tell you that.
Murder for the Halibut (A Clueless Cook Mystery)
Murder For The Halibut by Liz Lipperman is the third edition of A Clueless Cook Mystery series featuring delicious recipes with a judicious dose of murder.
Underestimated This book is a total mind trip! Was yelling at my Kindle as I was reading. I was totally rooting for people and thinking to myself, "this book has completely warped my way of thinking!" ) Needless to say I read all 500+ pages in less than one day.
Travis (Buffalo Rocker Series) Sex scenes were well written but not nasty. The story outside the sex was so sweet and romantic, with a rocker edge. WONDERFUL!!!!
Tormenting Lila Tormenting Lila is set a couple of months after the end of Losing Lila and we see Lila and Alex trying to get away from everyone for a romantic weekend. Lila is determined to break Alex's resolve not to sleep with her until her 18th birthday and he is equally determined to resist rather than face the wrath of her brother (and his best friend) Jack. They may be at a stand off when it comes to when Lila will lose her virginity but they are enjoying spending time together as a couple and finally having some space from the rest of the gang. Unfortunately for Lila their peace and quiet doesn't last long and she soon discovers that they aren't the only ones visiting the island.
The Twelfth Department With The Twelfth Department, William Ryan, takes us back in time another three decades, to a decidedly chillier time in Soviet history: 1937. In this, the third in Ryan's series of detective novels featuring detective Alexei Korolev, once again Korolev must tiptoe along a razor's edge, balancing personal stresses (in this case his son is in the city for a long overdue visit) and professional hazards. As in Bayer's book, a top official is murdered and the secret police has its tentacles all wrapped around the Truth. Korolev must find a way to piece together the clues without himself getting ensnared.
The Thief (Archetype) The debut novel in Aine Crabtree's Archetype series is an exciting beginning to what will surely be an epic adventure! The more you read, the more intrigued you will become, and you will thoroughly enjoy this story as it unfolds layers of legend that continue to cause stirrings in the modern world. Despite some of their more supernatural tendencies, these characters feel real and you will cheer for them, laugh with them, and cry for them as the world they thought they knew begins to reveal itself and they are pushed ever closer to the truth.
The String Diaries For Hannah Wilde, the diaries are a survival guide that taught her the three rules she lives by: verify everyone, trust no one, and if in any doubt, run. But Hannah knows that if her daughter is ever going to be safe, she will have to stop running and face the terror that has hunted her family for five generations.
The Six Rules of Maybe This book is interesting, but is more in Scarlet's head than anywhere else. There is little dialogue or action, but when there is some, it is well done. The insights are incredible, but I am afraid it might be lost on a punchy teenaged reader who just wants gratuitous entertainment. This is a brilliant story with beautiful writing, but might not capture the attention of many of my students. I wish it would teach them a little about themselves or the people they know, but the lessons might be too subtle. I think this book is more valuable for the teacher or mother who deals with adolescent girls than for the girls themselves. While Ophelia Speaks gave us a glimpse into the minds of real girls, The Six Rules of Maybe can do so with a fictional girl who seems so real, you will swear you know her.
The Silent Wife The book is narrated in alternating chapters, "Her" and "Him." In Todd's chapters, he does nothing but make excuses for himself in an attempt to justify his destructive actions. The most interesting aspect of Jodi's narrative is her psychotherapy background. Her knowledge of human behavior gives her an amount of patience, even denial that can often make her seem aloof. Jodi's staunch complacency made me admire her, but also doubt her. She's an incredibly complex character trying to navigate the world that she created and Todd has shattered. The revelations Jodi comes to in her selfassessment are alarming. She retreats to a dark place within herself as the conclusion unfolds. The end is intense and thought-provoking and I appreciated the undefined outcome that the author presented.
Lust in the Library: An Erotic Novella I like erotica and I like romance, but Lust in the Library didn't work on either level for me. The characters, storylines, and dialogue tended to be a bit immature and the sensuality wasn't my style. Perhaps others will enjoy Lust in the Library more than I did.
Love Him or Leave Him (A Small Town, Big Dreams Novel) This book has a lot of twists and turns that keeps the reader interested. Not only did she make me want to up and move to a small town and become part of that community, she gave me a better understanding of what community truly means when bad things can happen to good people. This was the first book by Sara that I read and I'm excited to get my hands on more of her books to get lost in the "fantasy" she creates.

The Millionaire Fastlane: Crack the Code to Wealth and Live Rich for a Lifetime English | 2011 | PDF | ISBN-10: 0984358102 | 336 Pages | 4MB The mainstream financial gurus have sold you blindly down the river to a great financial gamble: You've been hoodwinked to believe that wealth can be created by recklessly trusting in the uncontrollable and unpredictable markets: the housing market, the stock market, and the job market. This impotent financial gamble dubiously promises wealth in a wheelchair -- sacrifice your adult life for a financial plan that reaps dividends in the twilight of life. Accept the Slowlane as your blueprint for wealth and your financial future will blow carelessly asunder on a sailboat of HOPE: HOPE you can find a job and keep it, HOPE the stock market doesn't tank, HOPE the economy rebounds, HOPE, HOPE, and HOPE. Do you really want HOPE to be the centerpiece for your family's financial plan? Drive the Slowlane road and you will find your life deteriorate into a miserable exhibition about what you cannot do, versus what you can. For those who don't want a lifetime subscription to "settle-for-less" and a slight chance of elderly riches, there is an alternative; an expressway to extraordinary wealth that can burn a trail to financial independence faster than any road out there. Why jobs, 401(k)s, mutual funds, and 40-years of mindless frugality will never make you rich young. Why most entrepreneurs fail and how to immediately put the odds in your favor. The real law of wealth: Leverage this and wealth has no choice but to be magnetized to you. The leading cause of poorness: Change this and you change everything. How the rich really get rich - and no, it has nothing to do with a paycheck or a 401K match. Why the guru's grand deity - compound interest - is an impotent wealth accelerator. Why the guru myth of "do what you love" will most likely keep you poor, not rich. And 250+ more poverty busting distinctions... Demand the Fastlane, an alternative road-to-wealth; one that actually ignites dreams and creates millionaires young, not old. Change lanes and find your explosive wealth accelerator. Hit the Fastlane, crack the code to wealth, and find out how to live rich for a lifetime.

Debt-Free U: How I Paid for an Outstanding College Education Without Loans, Scholarships, or Mooching off My Parents 2011 | ISBN: 1591842980 | 304 pages | MOBI, EPUB | 3,6 MB In keeping with the new frugality, this college guide, written by a senior attending the University of Massachusetts, offers practical advice on how to pay for college without taking out loans. Decidedly old school in approach, Bissonnette advocates that students should bear the brunt of paying for their educations by working while in college and during breaks. He also suggests that attending community college for two years before transferring to a four-year college or university would go a long way toward cutting costs. Systematically and amusingly debunking the selection criteria used by U.S. News and World Report and others to rank elite colleges, Bissonnette is a strong advocate of attending reasonably priced state schools. He makes good points about how debt from student loans often prevents recent grads from starting families or buying homes. He also presents convincing research that elite graduate programs and selective employers accept plenty of people who have attended nonelite schools. Although the strictly dollars-and-cents approach to higher education may not sit well with some parents, this is a timely guide to a decision that has important financial ramifications.

The Riddle of the Labyrinth: The Quest to Crack an Ancient Code ISBN: 0062228838 | 2013 | EPUB | 384 pages | 4 MB In the tradition of Simon Winchester and Dava Sobel, The Riddle of the Labyrinth: The Quest to Crack an Ancient Code tells one of the most intriguing stories in the history of language, masterfully blending history, linguistics, and cryptology with an elegantly wrought narrative. When famed archaeologist Arthur Evans unearthed the ruins of a sophisticated Bronze Age civilization that flowered on Crete 1,000 years before Greece’s Classical Age, he discovered a cache of ancient tablets, Europe’s earliest written records. For half a century, the meaning of the inscriptions, and even the language in which they were written, would remain a mystery. Award-winning New York Times journalist Margalit Fox's riveting real-life intellectual detective story travels from the Bronze Age Aegean—the era of Odysseus, Agamemnon, and Helen—to the turn of the 20th century and the work of charismatic English archeologist Arthur Evans, to the colorful personal stories of the decipherers. These include Michael Ventris, the brilliant amateur who deciphered the script but met with a sudden, mysterious death that may have been a direct consequence of the deipherment; and Alice Kober, the unsung heroine of the story whose painstaking work allowed Ventris to crack the code.

Strange Medicine: A Shocking History of Real Medical Practices Through the Ages ISBN: 0399159959 | 2013 | EPUB | 224 pages | 265 KB Strange Medicine casts a gimlet eye on the practice of medicine through the ages that highlights the most dubious ideas, bizarre treatments, and biggest blunders. From bad science and oafish behavior to stomach-turning procedures that hurt more than helped, Strange Medicine presents strange but true facts and an honor roll of doctors, scientists, and dreamers who inadvertently turned the clock of medicine backward: • The ancient Egyptians applied electric eels to cure gout. • Medieval dentists burned candles in patients’ mouths to kill invisible worms gnawing at their teeth. • Renaissance physicians timed surgical procedures according to the position of the stars, and instructed epileptics to collect fresh blood from the newly beheaded. • Dr. Walter Freeman, the world’s foremost practitioner of lobotomies, practiced his craft while traveling on family camping trips, cramming the back of the station wagon with kids—and surgical tools—then hammering ice picks into the eye sockets of his patients in between hikes in the woods. Strange Medicine is an illuminating panorama of medical history as you’ve never seen it before.

Men on Strike: Why Men Are Boycotting Marriage, Fatherhood, and the American Dream - and Why It Matters English | ISBN: 1594036756 | 2013 | PDF | 176 pages | 3,4 MB American society has become anti-male. Men are sensing the backlash and are consciously and unconsciously going ―on strike.‖ They are dropping out of college, leaving the workforce and avoiding marriage and fatherhood at alarming rates. The trend is so pronounced that a number of books have been written about this ―man-child‖ phenomenon, concluding that men have taken a vacation from responsibility simply because they can. But why should men participate in a system that seems to be increasingly stacked against them? As Men on Strike demonstrates, men aren’t dropping out because they are stuck in arrested development. They are instead acting rationally in response to the lack of incentives society offers them to be responsible fathers, husbands and providers. In addition, men are going on strike, either consciously or unconsciously, because they do not want to be injured by the myriad of laws, attitudes and hostility against them for the crime of happening to be male in the twenty-first century. Men are starting to fight back against the backlash. Men on Strike explains their battle cry.
