Step on a Crack During a state funeral for a beloved former First Lady in New York City's largest cathedral, the unthinkable occurs. Armed men disguised as monks seize the church and seal themselves inside, along with more than one hundred of the most powerful people in America. The captives include world leaders, actors, TV stars, athletes, and politicians, and the kidnappers are armed with enough C4 explosives to blow a crater in the middle of Manhattan. NYPD officer Michael Bennett is pulled into the standoff as lead negotiator. Despite the escalating danger, Michael faces an even more terrifying crisis at home. His wife has been diagnosed with a devastating disease, and Michael faces the prospect of losing the love of his life and having to raise their ten children alone. With his own life teetering and the lives of thousands suddenly his responsibility, Michael struggles to diffuse the tense situation fast. Yet the kidnappers' moves are impossible to predict, and they block every attempt to break into the cathedralmost as if they are privy to their deliberations.
Withering Tights (Misadventures of Tallulah Casey) Let me start by saying that I think this new series has great promise. That being said I wasn't as impressed with the first installment as I had hoped to be. The story centers around Tallulah, a 14 year old girl and Georgia's cousin, who is attending an art school for a semester. Of course hilariousity and amusing wisdomosity follows Tallulah and her new Tree Sisters and their adventures with boys. There are quite a few similarities between this book and the authors previous series Georgia Nicolson, but it still fun and entertaining. I laughed out loud quite a few times while reading and it truly did remind me what is was like growing up.
The River Kings' Road An impious mercenary witnesses, and avoids an attack in a bordertown between two fractious medieval fantasy kingdoms, Langmyr, the site of the attack, and their implacable enemy, Oakharn. Also surviving the attack are a young woman, and the heir to the Oakharn lord killed in the massacre. This sets the stage for a complex web of alliances, struggles and strivings, as forces not only on both sides move to investigate and take advantage of the attack, but powers from beyond Oakharn and Langmyr as well. Godtouched champions of good and light maneuver against each other, and those caught in the middle simply try to survive, and wait to see if this massacre will lead to yet another conflict on already blood-soaked ground. Such is the fodder for River Kings' Road, a fantasy novel debut by Liane Merciel. The broad lines of the world and conflict she creates is nothing new for experienced fantasy readers. Medieval fantasy, magic based on devotion to one of a pantheon of deities, the basic trappings of a typical fantasy world. Digging a little deeper, the novel features a variety of multidimensional characters on a decidedly complex chessboard of groups seeking to quell or enflame, the fires of war and conflict between the two kingdoms. Merciel does a good job at the shades of gray between the the two characters who really are black and white. She also has clearly read and grokked the Anderson essay "On Thud and Blunder". She gets underpinnings right that many authors completely and utterly forget. Horses in her universe, for example, are *not* treated as motorcycles. The medieval feel of the world is pervasive and palpable. Faith has a role in this world that feels authentic and nuanced rather than "Crystal Dragon Jesus" .
The Redeemed: A Jenny Cooper Mystery Cooper is an incredible character as she is so F up that it is amazing she is not restrained the subplot when she was five years old enhance how mentally hurt she is. The whodunit focuses on religious and political corruption that the brass prefers disappears as M. R. Hall makes a strong case that justice is a two tiered system: the wealthy can flaunt the law and then there is the masses. Sub-genre fans will appreciate The Redeemed as Cooper battles with her personal problems fearing a breakdown and wars with her superiors over her successful inquiries breaking the Golden Rule of those with the gold make the rule.
The Painted Messiah I just finished this book and it nearly melted my brain! Sizzling action and the characters were vividly drawn. I felt like I knew the characters and was sad when the story came to an end. The changes in time and venue were exquisite and left me wanting more. They really added to the excitement and helped to build the suspense. I loved it, and I hope to read more of the same from Craig Smith.
The Extinct I am becoming a big Victor Methos fan. If you like monster books, you will love "The Extinct." This book gets kind of dark at the end, but if you stick with the protagonist, Eric Holden, you won't be sorry. I highly recommend this book!
Scimitar SL-2 This takes over from where Barracuda 945 left off, sinking. Hey, we're going to blow you up, guess where. We'll even give you clues so you can catch us. DUH! Oh Patrick, you failed miserably with these last two writings. A big disappointment. Way too much emphasis on describing the characters, their idiosyncrasies, moods, and what they're frickin eating. I want action. If I want to read about food I'd buy a cook book. Change brands of that Scotch Whiskey, Patrick, and go back to your old one and write like you once did, with conviction.
Possession The characters were a bit weak. There is a lot of back-and-forth between Jag (a Baddie), Vi (the protagonist) and Zenn (Vi's Goodie boyfriend who works in Special Forces). The name Zenn for a Goodie character isn't lost on me either...I found the irony in his name pretty witty. But I was fully prepared to give Possession a 3-star rating because the characters don't carry the book all that well. There are also a number of what seem like narrative jumps, where I had to backtrack to figure out what was going on and who was telling the story. It led to a little more confusion than I would have liked. However the plot in the second half of the book saves it and brings it to a 4-star read. Be prepared for plot twists, this book is full of them. The ending is bone-chilling and I am looking forward to the next book in the series!
Playing Hurt
Holly Schindler detailed the characters' lives, thoughts, and emotions perfectly. I personally felt a greater connection with Clint's story however, I enjoyed watching both Chelsea and Clint grow throughout the novel. Also, I must say that although the secondary characters were not as focused on as Chelsea and Clint were, they also played important roles, which was another great element of the novel. I admire Holly Schindler's fantastic ability to bring her characters to life and have her readers experience Chelsea and Clint's emotions along with them. The main lesson presented within Playing Hurt, is to take chances and not being afraid to live your life no matter how much it may frighten you.
Plan B: A Nick Heller Story An original short story by Joseph Finder, New York Times bestselling author of Buried Secrets and Vanished. "Plan B" finds private spy Nick Heller in Barcelona, Spain on a rescue mission. The target: a walled compound with state-of-the art-security. The object: a teenage girl, held against her will. The plan: get in and rescue the girl and then get out without tripping an alarm or alerting the army of guards. But even the best designed plans can go wrong. Which is why Nick Heller always has a Plan B.
Odd Girl Out To some degree, this is necessary as the nature of the conflict between the Modhri and Compton's employers changes in this story. Harriet's review says nothing of the Modhri's fear/anger over what it calls "The abomination". That fear leads the Modhri to try to persuade Compton to help the Modhri get rid of the abomination. Of course, Compton is too cagey for that. The Modhri shows increasing cleverness in its use of "walkers" and some interesting new capabilities. It is also good at using the legal process to try to slow Compton down. Fortunately, he has Bayta, and McMicking to help. The latter is especially useful. It also appears that Compton is warming up to Bayta. A lot of action happens here. It is clear though that this war needs several main actors. Compton inflicts damage, but it takes time to get to different places on the quadrail, giving the Modhri time to create new situations and countermeasures. McMicking helps significantly, but it's still too limited a force.
Letter to My Daughter George Bishop gives Laura a poignant and honest voice. It was hard to believe that this story was written by a man as it feels like you are reading an autobiography. Laura's character is completely relatable and I can remember feeling many of the things that she felt as a teenager. Laura's letter to Liz is beautiful story of love, loss and family. I highly recommend this book.
Kilo Class In Kilo Class, Patrick Robinson did some good writing. I enjoyed reading the book during the escapades of Hurricane Floyd and it kept my on the edge on my seat. He did have some technical flaws in the book suck as a Super Cobra being used as a transport helicopter. Also, I'm not one to believe that a Tiawanese naval vessal would kill more than half the people onboard a research base just for showing up at an island. It makes for a good plotline, but it's not quite believeable. Also, the ending could have been MUCH better than leaving off where it did. He ended the story way to quickly and I, plainly put, was not satisfied with the way the book ended compared to how Robinson built up the book. It was, however, a nice book to read and I enjoy his style of writing in this book. I plan to read Nimitz Class soon and hope that it can get up there with this book and have a hopefully better ending. But one last thing. I greatly enjoyed the antics of NSA Admiral Morgan. He was a riot and a good comic relief in the book in my opinion.
Just After Sunset: Stories Of all the stories included in Just After Sunset, my favorite is Stationary Bike. Richard Sifkitz has a belated physical and learns that his cholesterol is extremely high dangerously so. Like so many of his generation he decides to get a stationary bike to exercise and hopefully ride off his health problems. Unlike many of his contempories, however, Richard rides his workout machine. He rides and he rides and he rides. He decides to paint a mural in the room he rides in to give him something to look at while he's working out. As in all of King's work, the simple mural turns out to be unique and Richard's bike takes him on trips he really doesn't want to make. This is a riveting story and is worth the cost of the book by itself.
How to Moon a Cat (Cats and Curios Mystery) This exciting road trip goes from danger to humor and back as the adorable cats are brilliant tacticians who amusingly but cleverly maneuver the niece somewhat for treats but often to keep her safe. Fast-paced, cozy readers who enjoy something different will relish the charming Cats and Curios Mysteries (see Nine Lives Last Forever and How to Wash a Cat) as Oscar's niece continues her dangerous adventures into the weird whimsical world of her late Uncle.
Go with Me
Whizzer looked for volunteers and Nate the Great, "a tall, long-boned, heavy-wristed kid: not a scholar, not a talker. Smarter than a horse, not smarter than a tractor." The other is Lester, an old man with a heavy limp. "Was he seventy?" Lillian wonders. "Was he eighty?" These three started out to find Blackway and to do what, exactly? A small suspenseful novel, filled with humor, a smile on almost every page, but yet, a novel that has grace and charm and so well written. A profound novel filled with the wit of the Vermont old timer. No flatlanders allowed here.
Haunted: A Chloe Boston Mystery I hesitate to praise them too highly in the chance that the price will rise in the surge of Melanie Jackson's popularity. Still I can't resist! The books avoid the tired emphasis on sex and titillation, they convey the sense of a small town and create a world that emphasizes Chloe's vital place in her society. Ms. Jackson's plots are impeccable, her dialogue entertaining and she's become one of my favorite authors.

And three girls three beautiful, mysterious girls are here to choose who will pay.
Forever The plot in this was also fantastic, especially the last hundred and so pages. For the majority of the book, I had no clue how everything was going to end, and I liked that a lot. Maggie's writing was yet again beautiful and stunningonce again painting a vivid picture. This book even made me cry a little in some places, especially towards the end- I still get a little sad thinking about it! The ending...there's been some debate it whether or not it was too open-ended, just the right amount, or some cases a little too tied up. I'm somewhere between just the right amount and too open-ended. I liked that Maggie left some questions up in the air with just the right amount of hope and I can see why she did it, but in some ways, I wish some clearer answers were provided. Regardless, Forever is yet another amazing addition to the Wolves of Mercy Falls series. I'm going to miss Isabel, Cole, Sam, and Grace, but I'm still holding out for a continuation someday. Until then I'm eagerly awaiting Maggie's future books, starting with the already buzzed about Scorpio Races.
Crunch This is a really well written tale and the author has created a bunch of realistic characters in the Marriss family. It's not often that you see Dystopian themes addressed in literature for fourth graders, and the author has done a good job here of taking a difficult situation and sort of toning it down for the 10 year old palate, all the while still keeping an air of authenticity. This is a compelling read, and young kids will be cheering for Dewey to succeed in his efforts while at the same time thinking about what they would do in his situations. You feel heartbroken because you know how much they miss their parents and wonder at their ability to keep going in the face of so much uncertainty. Their desire throughout to "quit being the parents" lends realism to these teenagers sometimes superhuman efforts at being adults.
Burn Bright In a YA market fast becoming saturated in dystopia's BURN BRIGHT shines out in the crowd. It's a dystopian tale with splashes of sci-fi. It is, in fact, so vibrant and unique and convincing that it makes me feel embarrassed for other recent (often flailing romantic) YA dystopia's. It is fantastically original, creepy, riveting and atmospheric. I can honestly say BURN BRIGHT is unlike any book I have ever read = complete WOW experience.
Cast into Doubt This was a very good book that I read straight through. The characters were likable and described just enough. Had plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I was shocked I couldn't guess the bad person or how it was going to end. I would definitely recommend this as a good read.
Buried Secrets BURIED SECRETS is a perfect example of a white-knuckle thriller: suspenseful and exciting, with good action scenes, interesting characters and lots of smart technical details and inside info that take the reader behind the curtain to catch a glimpse of the shadows. There are few writers working today who could pull off a book like this with such skill and panache and none who could do it while making it all look so effortless. BURIED SECRETS cements Finder's status as the master of the modern thriller.
Break Out (Blood Hunter)
Combine space ships with vampires, pirates, and romance, and you get Breakout by Nina Croft. The characters are so vivid, they jump off the page and talk right at you, and the brilliant dialog made me laugh out loud several times. The chemistry between Skylar and Rico starts hot and doesn't stop heating up, until I thought the ebook would burst into flames on my computer. A must read for science fiction romance fans.
Books Can Be Deceiving Books Can Be Deceiving will appeal to cozy mystery lovers everywhere, especially ones involving librarians and books. Sometimes when an author starts a new series they read much like the author's other books. That is not the case here. McKinlay's new series is very different from her other series and is excellently written. It's a fresh book and very entertaining. Overall, great, great cozy mystery! I'm already looking forward to the next book in this wonderful new series.
Bloodlust This was an exciting read. I absolutely love Declan. He is completely hardcore. He is torn by his need to protect Jill but also driven by his uncontrollable and often violent vampire side which craves Jill in a very deadly way. He loves Jill but
knows that he is a ticking time bomb. This makes for a tense relationship, especially as Declan relapses and Jill blacks out due to the terrible formula running through her veins. I liked how the author really conveys their desperate love for each other since both feel that their time together is numbered. Despite the risks, they still hang on to being together. Jill is very soft hearted and sometime puts herself in unnecessary danger, which only ratchets up the edginess of the story. This book was also thrilling as it delves into vampire society and the power struggle between two lethal vampire brothers who both want the crown.
Blood Secrets While there may be plenty blood, gore, and murderous violence, Holmes hasn't forgotten to keep her readers intrigued on an intellectual and emotional level. With a revealing sub-plot wherein readers learn more about the Sabian family history, Blood Secrets includes a journey of discovery when Alex stumbles upon family secrets which may have been better left in the past. From scenes rife with intense, dark and disturbing events to a jovial, light hearted comedic banter ever present between Alex and Varik (her love interest), Jeannie has a seemingly effortless ability to tell an "edge of your seat" adventure that is sure to keep readers coming back for more!
Blind Fall This is a reasonably good mystery, and a very interesting suspense novel. Once you get past the whodunit aspect of things (which is revealed rather quickly) the book has more to do with the acceptance of gays in modern society, and how they interact with the rest of us. That's interesting, and it's well-done. I enjoyed this book a great deal, and would recommend it to anyone.
Beekeeping for Beginners Laurie R. King has done what a number of my favorite authors have done and that is to release a short story as a form of introduction for a new book release. I loved this book, done from Holmes' viewpoint, at the first case with Mary Russell. It was just a fun, short read!!
Barry the Fish with Fingers Kindergarten-Grade 2 Slug enjoys lying on the ocean floor observing the different fish as they swim by. He takes note of their diverse sizes, shapes, and colors and figures he has seen everything until Barry arrives. Barry has fingers at the ends of his fins. He claims that his new appendages are the answer to every fish's problem. The problem, it turns out, is boredom. Barry demonstrates all of the wonderful things he can do with his fingers, such as count, knit, type, paint, and play the piano. He even saves the others' lives when he points out a heavy object that is plummeting to the sea floor, and they can scatter before it lands on them. The box, it turns out, is filled with Pirate Jack's Tasty Fish Sticks, which enable the other fish to obtain fingers like Barry's. The book's pages are filled with bright, cartoonish, gouache illustrations. Children who enjoyed Marcus Pfister's Rainbow Fish books (NorthSouth) will enjoy Barry.
Axis This is not a great Robert Charles Wilson book...which is kinda like saying "this is a slow Ferarri". Wilson has been in a class of his own since "A Bridge of Years", writing character-driven sci-fi for geeks with a passing knowledge of cosmology and physics. To me, Axis reads a bit like Bios. Its short and to the point, hurtling along like a freight train toward a brick wall. Things feel like they won't end well. Characters get short-shrifted in service of the inscrutable plot.
Adrenaline (Sam Capra) This novel is a little less Harlan Coben style, than Panic and some of his other independent stand alone storyline novels, more like a David Morrell far fetched well trained military/secret agent operative main character than an everyday guy type through the eyes read. It's not realistic (although it is considerably more so than some of Abbott's other work) but that doesn't mean it's not just plain fun.
A Snowball in Hell With its great monologues, warped villain, spot-on mockery of pop culture and clever plot twists, it was hard to put down. Unofficially described as "Tartan noir," Christopher Brookmyre's books make ample use of violence and gore
and this one is no exception. I have since read several more and this is still one of my favorites (the other is Attack of the Unsinkable Rubber Ducks). I recommend reading A Big Boy Did it and Ran Away and The Sacred Art of Stealing before Sowball in Hell as they are both also very good and they introduce three of the main characters.
A Gentleman's Game One of the more fascinating characters here, as in the QUEEN & COUNTRY books, is Paul Crocker, Director of Operations and Chace's superior officer. Crocker is a political animal who somehow maintains a balancing act between protecting the interests of Great Britain and those of his agents, even while one goal is at odds with the other. While one may occasionally differ with Rucka's worldview, he has a canny vision with respect to the manner in which the world ultimately works. While Rucka is quick to give credit to others when it comes to his insight, he is ultimately the channel through which this vision is communicated, and in such a riveting manner.
Siblings in Adoption and Foster Care Published: 2008-12-30 | ISBN: 0313351430 | PDF | 216 pages | 3 MB Normally, our relationships with our brothers and sisters are the longest relationships in our lives, outlasting time with our parents, and most marriages today. The sibling relationship is emotionally powerful and critically important, giving us a sense of continuity throughout life. So what happens when a child loses contact not only with his or her parents, but with siblings too? That is what happens in thousands of cases each year inside the child welfare system. Children are surrendered by parents - or taken by the government - and placed in the foster care system. There, they are often separated and sent to different foster families, or adopted by different couples. In this work, a team of top experts
details for us how this added separation futher traumatizes children. This stellar team of internationally known researchers - some of whom are themselves adoptees - shares with us hard, poignant, and personal insights, as well as ways we might act to solve this widespread problem. Contributors address not only the importance of nurturing sibling bonds and mental health strategies to support those relationships, but also the legal rights of siblings to be together, as well as issues in international adoptions. Emerging and standing programs to encourage and facilitate adoptions that keep siblings together are featured, as are programs that at least enable them to stay in contact.

UFOs: Myths, Conspiracies, and Realities Published: 2011-02-15 | ISBN: 0312648340 | PDF | 336 pages | 3 MB A never-before-heard firsthand account of a government insider’s experience on the cutting edge of UFO exploration While still on active duty in the U.S. Army during the 1980s, Colonel John B. Alexander, Ph.D., created an interagency group to explore the controversial topic of UFOs. Participants came from the Army, Navy, Air Force, CIA, NSA, DIA, and the aerospace industry. All members held Top Secret clearance. What they discovered was not at all what was expected. UFOs covers the numerous cases they saw, and answers questions like: • What was really in Hanger 18? • Did a UFO land at Holloman Air Force Base? • What happened at Roswell? • What is Majestic 12? • What is the Aviary? • What does the government know about UFOs? • What has happened with disclosure in other countries? • Has the U.S. reverse engineered a UFO? • Why don’t presidents get access to UFO info? UFOs is at once a complete account of Alexander’s findings, and a call to action. There are no conspiracy theories here—only hard facts—but they are merely the beginning. Serious research is needed in order to understand and anticipate the workings of UFOs, and John Alexander is leading the charge.

False Economy: A Surprising Economic History of the World 2009 | ISBN: 0670917370, 1594488665 | 348 pages | EPUB | 3 MB Why do oil and diamonds lead to economic disaster more often than boom? Why doesn't Africa grow cocaine? Why might believing in God be good for your balance-sheet? In 2001 Argentina's government bankrupted itself, yet for the past two hundred years it had enjoyed a vista of economic opportunity almost identical to that of the USA. Why did the USA succeed while Argentina stalled? Botswana and Sierra Leone are both blessed with abundant diamonds. Why did Botswana became the world's fastest-growing economy while Sierra Leone suffered a decade of brutal civil war? The path to prosperity is rarely obvious and the sources of success are often unexpected. Time and again, world leaders have failed to learn the lessons of economic history, and their mistakes continue to have surprising and catastrophic consequences. In False Economy, Alan Beattie uses extraordinary stories of economic triumph and disaster to explain how some countries went wrong while others went right, and why it's so difficult to change course once you're on the path to ruin.

If I Die Before I Wake: A Memoir of Drinking and Recovery 2010 | ISBN-10: 1573244716 | EPUB, MOBI, PDF | 240 pages | 4 MB Barb Rogers' book begins with the tragic death of her teenage son, Jon, and delves into the horror that was her life to that point. Due to a home life fraught with substance and emotional abuse, Barb found herself bottomed out more than once, and homeless along the way. "When asked in early recovery if I knew any prayers, the one I could think of was the child's nighttime prayer, 'Now I lay me down to sleep.' As I thought of it, I recalled the long nights when I simply wanted to go to sleep and never wake up." Barb learned most of her life lessons through pain, tragedy, and addiction. This is not a glamorous book, it is real and it is raw. It is not about survival of the fittest, but the weak, the hopeless, the helpless, the truly addicted, not only to substances, but to drama, anger, excuses, and justifications.
She describes how she got to her lowest point, just what it was, and how and why she finally reached out to a 12-step program for help. She shows the reader what it's really like to survive, to stay clean and sober, and find a way to the other side. Recovery was one of the most difficult things she ever did, but "worth every effort I put out." Barb Rogers would be the first to tell you she's not special--she's led a hard life, and she tells her story well and with humor--readers--addicts or not, but especially addicts--are going to find the kind of gritty inspiration, that if Barb can do it so can they, that will inspire life changes.
Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness 2013 | ISBN-10: 145162137X, 1451621388 | EPUB, MOBI | 288 pages | 3,2 MB One day in 2009, twenty-four-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up alone in a strange hospital room, strapped to her bed, under guard, and unable to move or speak. A wristband marked her as a “flight risk,” and her medical records— chronicling a month-long hospital stay of which she had no memory at all—showed hallucinations, violence, and dangerous instability. Only weeks earlier, Susannah had been on the threshold of a new, adult life: a healthy, ambitious college grad a few months into her first serious relationship and a promising career as a cub reporter at a major New York newspaper. Who was the stranger who had taken over her body? What was happening to her mind? In this swift and breathtaking narrative, Susannah tells the astonishing true story of her inexplicable descent into madness and the brilliant, lifesaving diagnosis that nearly didn’t happen. A team of doctors would spend a month— and more than a million dollars—trying desperately to pin down a medical explanation for what had gone wrong. Meanwhile, as the days passed and her family, boyfriend, and friends helplessly stood watch by her bed, she began to move inexorably through psychosis into catatonia and, ultimately, toward death. Yet even as this period nearly tore her family apart, it offered an extraordinary testament to their faith in Susannah and their refusal to let her go. Then, at the last minute, celebrated neurologist Souhel Najjar joined her team and, with the help of a lucky, ingenious test, saved her life. He recognized the symptoms of a newly discovered autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks the brain, a disease now thought to be tied to both schizophrenia and autism, and perhaps the root of “demonic possessions” throughout history. Far more than simply a riveting read and a crackling medical mystery, Brain on Fire is the powerful account of one woman’s struggle to recapture her identity and to rediscover herself among the fragments left behind. Using all her considerable journalistic skills, and building from hospital records and surveillance video, interviews with family and friends, and excerpts from the deeply moving journal her father kept during her illness, Susannah pieces together the story of her “lost month” to write an unforgettable memoir about memory and identity, faith and love. It is an important, profoundly compelling tale of survival and perseverance that is destined to become a classic.

Callsign Hades ISBN: 1847378595 | 2010 | EPUB | 320 pages | 1 MB In summer 2006 Helmand Province erupted into violence as NATO forces struggled to crush Taliban strongholds. For six weeks the Royal Irish Regiment and the Paras defended Sangin in the face of ever-mounting attacks. At this point young officer Patrick Bury was learning the trade of the infantry in the Brecon Beacons. Paddy had always wanted to be a soldier - a desire fraught with the contradictions of a complex history overridden by a 'warrior calling'. When he arrived in Afghanistan with 1st Royal Irish, he was surrounded by men oozing bloody combat experience. This was not Sandhurst. It was extreme violence and killing. Hades Four One was his callsign and the infantry mantra rang in his ears: 'To close and kill the enemy, in all weather conditions, in all terrain, by day or night.' Over six months, Paddy and his company dealt with over a hundred IEDs, of which 60 exploded on them, killing his comrades in the most vicious of ways and fuelling a sense of ever-growing dissatisfaction in the young captain. This powerful and thoughful first-hand account about the 'eternal truths of military life' places the reader in Paddy's boots, sharing every thought, ache, smell and taste of life on the frontline in Afghanistan. He describes modern warfare in a way that creates an understanding of the myriad complexities soldiers are faced with, the conditions in which they operate and the moral and emotional challenges they endure.
The Stargate Conspiracy: The Truth about Extraterrestrial life and the Mysteries of Ancient Egypt ISBN: 0316648612 | 1999 | EPUB | 440 pages | 664 KB The authors of "The Stargate Conspiracy" aim to expose one of the most insidious and dangerous plans of our times. One that involves intelligence agencies, politicians, international bestselling authors, and the world's leading scientists and industrialists. They believe that this conspiracy, centred upon the eternal mysteries of ancient Egypt, targets and threatens us all. Lynn Picknett and Clive Prince highlight a secret agenda which has been pursued for nearly 50 years and which is emerging in the form of a hybrid fundamentalism on the eve of the Millennium. Tracing the identity of the groups involved and their pedigree through occult networks and mind-control experiments, the authors argue that at the heart of this conspiracy is the belief that ancient Egyptian gods were - and are - real extrterrestrial beings, that certain key people are in contact with these beings, and that they are about to return through the "stargate" between our world and theirs. The authors reveal that the background to these ideas can be found within astonishingly advanced scientific knowledge encapsulated in the ancient Egyptian texts, now recognized as a major influence on the development of European thought. The US-funded excavations that have taken place on the Giza plateua since the 1970s - offically denied, but for which Picknett and Prince produce documented evidence - now appear to be the result of directives allegedly received through communication with beings of higher intelligence, who are instructing the conspirators to lay the foundations for great global changes. But are we really preparing for the return of the gods? And, if so, will we be expected to accept unquestioningly the conspirators as our spokesmen? Or is this an exercise in mass deception designed to ensure our support of the conspirators? As the powerful few feed on millennial tension, triumphantly persuading us they alone know how to talk to the gods, the authors intend their work as a serious warning to mankind.

The Many Not The Few: The Stolen History of the Battle of Britain ISBN: 1620401002 | 2013 | EPUB | 464 pages | 1 MB Immortalized in Churchill's often quoted assertion that never before "was so much owed by so many to so few," the top-down narrative of the Battle of Britain has been firmly established in British legend: Britain was saved from German invasion by the gallant band of Fighter Command Pilots in their Spitfires and Hurricanes, and the public owed them their freedom. Richard North's radical re-evaluation of the Battle of Britain dismantles this mythical retelling of events. Taking a wider perspective than the much-discussed air war, North takes a fresh look at the conflict as a whole to show that the civilian experience and participation, far from being separate and distinct, was integral to the Battle. This recovery of the people's history demonstrates that Hitler's aim was not the military conquest of England, and that his unattained target was the hearts and minds of the British people.

Benjamin Lorr walked into his first yoga studio on a whim, overweight and curious, and quickly found the yoga reinventing his life. He was studying Bikram Yoga (or “hot yoga”) when a run-in with a master and competitive yoga champion led him into an obsessive subculture—a group of yogis for whom eight hours of practice a day in 110- degree heat was just the beginning. So begins a journey. Populated by athletic prodigies, wide-eyed celebrities, legitimate medical miracles, and predatory hucksters, it’s a nation-spanning trip—from the jam-packed studios of New York to the athletic performance labs of the University of Oregon to the stage at the National Yoga Asana Championship, where Lorr competes for glory. The culmination of two years of research, and featuring hundreds of interviews with yogis, scientists, doctors, and scholars, Hell-Bent is a wild exploration. A look at the science behind a controversial practice, a story of greed, narcissism, and corruption, and a mind-bending tale of personal transformation, it is a book that will not only challenge your conception of yoga, but will change the way you view the fragile, inspirational limits of the human body itself.

Dreamers of a New Day: Women Who Invented the Twentieth Century English | 2010 | ISBN: 1844676137 | ISBN-13: 9781844676132 | 320 pages | PDF | 5,8 MB A major new exploration of the women who revolutionized American and British life, by the renowned feminist historian. Amid the growth of globalized trade, mass production, immigration and urban slums that dominated the period from the 1880s to the onset of the First World War, an awakening was taking place among American and British women. Across the Atlantic and across political boundaries—anarchists to liberals, feminists and non-feminists—female pioneers shared a sense that social change was possible, and acted upon that belief. Dreamers of a New Day explores a period, from the belle Êpoque to the roaring twenties, when women overturned social norms and assumptions as they struggled to define themselves as individuals. Forming broad coalitions and movements, they transformed the conditions of their own lives, decades before the intellectuals of the 1960s conceptualized "everyday life" as an arena for radical activity. Drawing on a wealth of original research, Sheila Rowbotham has written a groundbreaking new history examining how women came to be modern. Challenging existing conceptions of citizenship and culture, from ethical living to consumerism, sexuality to democracy, these dreamers shaped many of the issues that remain at the forefront of twenty-first-century life.
Crisis in the Eurozone English | 2012 | ISBN: 1844679691 | ISBN-13: 9781844679690 | 268 pages | PDF | 3,2 MB A controversial call to break up the Eurozone and stop the debt crisis. First, there was the credit crunch, and governments around the world stepped in to bail out the banks. The sequel to that debacle is the sovereign debt crisis, which has hit the eurozone hard. The hour has come to pay the piper, and ordinary citizens across Europe are growing to realize that socialism for the wealthy means punching a few new holes in their already-tightened belts. Building on his work as a leading member of the renowned Research on Money and Finance group, Costas Lapavitsas argues that European austerity is counterproductive. Cutbacks in public spending will mean a longer, deeper recession, worsen the burden of debt, further imperil banks, and may soon spell the end of monetary union itself. Crisis in the Eurozone charts a cautious path between political economy and radical economics to envisage a restructuring reliant on the forces of organized labour and civil society. The clear-headed rationalism at the heart of this book conveys a controversial message, unwelcome in many quarters but soon to be echoed across the continent: impoverished states have to quit the euro and cut their losses or worse hardship will ensue.
Buy and Hold Is Dead: How to Make Money and Control Risk in Any Market English | 2009-10-26 | ISBN: 0470458410 | 303 pages | PDF | 4,4 MB An eye–opening look at how investors can take control of their financial life Buy and Hold Is Dead provides actionable strategies and disciplines, which can be used to earn positive results in any market environment. This timely guide is designed around a step–by–step educational process in which traders and investors lean how they can protect their wealth and make money regardless of market direction. The goal of Buy and Hold Is Dead is twofold: to dispel old–school investment techniques and to show you how to maximize your returns without sacrificing time or lifestyle and without the use of a money manager. • Identifies the duration of the current economic down cycle and warns of a Greater Depression • Encourages readers to use proactive trading strategies that can protect their wealth and make them money in any market environment • Discusses why investors cannot afford to rely on the selfish guidelines imposed by big brokers and money managers Losing less is never a winning strategy, and this book skillfully addresses why it should not be considered a positive result despite relative market performance.

Every Landlord's Tax Deduction Guide gives residential landlords the plain-English guide they need to save money on taxes -- without the services of a pricey accounting firm. This book explains how to maximize your deductions without drawing the ire of the IRS. Find out how to: fill out IRS Schedule E take real estate tax credits figure out if an expense is a repair (deductible) or an improvement (depreciable) maximize your depreciation deductions deduct losses arising from real estate ownership keep proper tax records deduct home office, travel, and casualty losses Every Landlord's Tax Deduction Guide is comprehensive yet easy to read and provides interesting real-world examples. The 5th edition is completely updated for 2008 returns and reflects the latest tax information and numbers.Summary: New Land Lords Read this FirstRating: 4I think that every new/potentail landlord should get this book and read it first before you invest and start to work on a house. There are some major decisions you need to think about and make for tax purposes and it is best to know ahead of time. It has been very helpful to me.Summary: You cannot afford not to be knowledgeable about this topicRating: 5The topic of taxes may not be as popular as learning about the next hot investment strategy that can make you an instant millionaire, but whether you like it or not, this topic is important. Even if your accountant does all your taxes, it doesn't hurt to understand it. I cannot tell you how much the knowledge of taxes saved me. I don't have to pay an accountant. If you understand it, you don't have to do it yourself - you can train your employees to do it. It still costs a lot less to have them do it than your accountant who will charge you over $100 per hour. But in addition to that, you will be able to save money on taxes. The author teaches you how to deduct as much as legally possibly from your rental income to show as little taxable income as possible. It is not uncommon for landlords to show negative taxable income (meaning you pay no taxes on it), and still have positive cash flow. The secret is depreciation, which is a noncash expense. I think that if you own real estate, you cannot afford not to be knowledgeable about this topic. - Mariusz Skonieczny, author of Why Are We So Clueless about the Stock Market? Learn how to invest your money, how to pick stocks, and how to make money in the stock marketSummary: Excellent BookRating: 5This is one of the best, well written, informative, and easy to read books that I've come across yet.Summary: Every Landlord's tax Reduction GuideRating: 4I like the way the author wrote in a clear organized style. I found it much easier to understand then I had imagined. It is very comprehensive. JimSummary: Great bookRating: 5I needed a book to give me very detailed information on the tax deductions a landlord could take. I am thinking of turning my second home into rental property and I wasn't sure of the tax advantages. I found this book and it was very informative. I couldn't put it down and read the entire book in two days. Then, I went back and read the important parts again. After reading the book I feel like an expert on the subject. The book tells you how to keep records, figure out your basis, etc without having to refer to the numerous booklets the IRS provides the taxpayers. Definitely worth the money.
The Science of Getting Rich: Attracting Financial Success through Creative Thought English | 2007 | ISBN: 1594772096 | ISBN-13: 9781594772092 | 112 pages | PDF | 1 MB The step-by-step scientific approach to attracting financial and spiritual wealth • This is the 100-year-old book that inspired Rhonda Byrne's bestselling The Secret • Explains the precise series of practical steps that, if followed, guarantee prosperity • Reveals the secrets that underlie today’s success and prosperity movements In his bestselling book, Wallace D. Wattles explains that “universal mind” underlies and permeates all creation. Through the process of visualization we can engage the law of attraction--impressing our thoughts upon “formless substance” and bringing the desired object or circumstances into material form. The author emphasizes the critical importance of attitude: only by aligning ourselves with the positive forces of natural law can we gain unlimited access to the creative mind and its abundant rewards. The Science of Getting Rich holds the secret to how economic and emotional security can be achieved in a practical, imaginative, and noncompetitive way, while maintaining a loving and harmonious relationship with all of life. By living in accordance with the positive principles outlined in this book, we can find our rightful place in the cosmic scheme and create for ourselves an environment in which to grow in wealth, wisdom, and happiness. Rhonda Byrne, in her book and DVD, The Secret, tells how a 100-year-old book entered her life and changed it forever. Here is that book. Written in 1910, The Science of Getting Rich inspired Byrne to create her bestselling DVD, and subsequently, to write her book. She has said that it “gave me a glimpse of The Secret. It was like a flame inside of my heart. And with every day since, it's just become a raging fire of wanting to share all of this with the world.” “There is a science of getting rich. It is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic. There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches. Once a person learns and obeys these laws, he will get rich with mathematical certainty.”

Here Is Where: Discovering America's Great Forgotten History 2013 | ISBN-10: 0307463974 | EPUB, MOBI | 512 pages | 4,3 MB Here Is Where chronicles Andrew Carroll’s eye-opening – and at times hilarious -- journey across America to find and explore unmarked historic sites where extraordinary moments occurred and remarkable individuals once lived. Sparking the idea for this book was Carroll’s visit to the spot where Abraham Lincoln’s son was saved by the brother of Lincoln’s assassin. Carroll wondered, How many other unmarked places are there where intriguing events have unfolded and that we walk past every day, not realizing their significance? To answer that question, Carroll ultimately trekked to every region of the country -- by car, train, plane, helicopter, bus, bike, and kayak and on foot. Among the things he learned: *Where in North America the oldest sample of human DNA was discovered * Where America’s deadliest maritime disaster took place, a calamity worse than the fate of the Titanic *Which virtually unknown American scientist saved hundreds of millions of lives *Which famous Prohibition agent was the brother of a notorious gangster *How a 14-year-old farm boy’s brainstorm led to the creation of television Featured prominently in Here Is Where are an abundance of firsts (from the first use of modern anesthesia to the first cremation to the first murder conviction based on forensic evidence); outrages (from riots to massacres to forced sterilizations); and breakthroughs (from the invention, inside a prison, of a revolutionary weapon; to the recovery, deep in the Alaskan tundra, of a super-virus; to the building of the rocket that made possible space travel). Here Is Where is thoroughly entertaining, but it’s also a profound reminder that the places we pass by often harbor amazing secrets and that there are countless other astonishing stories still out there, waiting to be found.

Bug Music: How Insects Gave Us Rhythm and Noise 2013 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 1250005213 | EPUB | 2 MB In the spring of 2013 the cicadas in the Northeastern United States will yet again emerge from their seventeen-year cycle—the longest gestation period of any animal. Those who experience this great sonic invasion compare their sense of wonder to the arrival of a comet or a solar eclipse. This unending rhythmic cycle is just one unique example of how the pulse and noise of insects has taught humans the meaning of rhythm, from the whirr of a cricket’s wings to this unfathomable and exact seventeen-year beat. In listening to cicadas, as well as other humming, clicking, and thrumming insects, Bug Music is the first book to consider the radical notion that we humans got our idea of rhythm, synchronization, and dance from the world of insect sounds that surrounded our species over the millions of years over which we evolved. Completing the trilogy he began with Why Birds Sing and Thousand Mile Song, David Rothenberg explores a unique part of our relationship with nature and sound—the music of insects that has provided a soundtrack for humanity throughout the history of our species. Bug Music continues Rothenberg’s in-depth research and spirited writing on the relationship between human and animal music, and it follows him as he explores insect influences in classical and modern music, plays his saxophone with crickets and other insects, and confers with researchers and scientists nationwide. This engaging and thought-provoking book challenges our understanding of our place in nature and our relationship to the creatures surrounding us, and makes a passionate case for the interconnectedness of species.
