The Heist This book is a collaboration between Monk author Lee Goldberg and Janet Evanovich. It turns out to be a lighthearted bit-of-the-same from these authors. I got exactly what I had expected from them. It reads like a TV cop show (hmmm, go figure). There was nothing about the writing that overly impressed me. There were no big ah-ha moments. I won't give any spoilers about the relationship, but suffice it to say that it is pretty predictable...but predictable in a kind of fun and comforting way. There were plenty of clever moments that made me smile a little. A couple of them made me laugh out loud.
The Good Cop: A Mystery I love this series with Carter Ross, the intrepid newspaper reporter in Newark, N.J. Carter is a nice guy. You could invite him over dinner and be entertained. He is, also, a very good reporter and stumbles into a mystery of two dead cops who supposedly committed suicide. His investigation takes him all over Newark and into strange places. He visits a warehouse/store that is so laugh out loud funny that tears rolled out of my eyes.
The Girl Next Door: A Mystery This book was so much fun. I laughed out loud more than once. One of my favorite scenes is when his intern, Lunky, writes the story about the bear by discussing the bear in fiction citing William Faulkner and John Irving. Absolutely hysterical. I thought this was a debut novel but discovered it was the third in the series. You don't have to read the first two to appreciate this one. I didn't and I enjoyed it. I am going to read the first two. That's how much I liked this one.
The Heirloom Murders As collections curator for Old World Wisconsin, Chloe Ellefson delights in losing herself in antiques and folk traditions and forgetting her messy love life. But her peace is destroyed when her ex-boyfriend unexpectedly turns up, followed by a break-in at her friend Dellyn’s historic house a potential treasure trove of priceless antiques. Was the intruder hunting for the missing Eagle Diamond, a legendary gemstone unearthed in 1876? When a grisly murder takes place on the museum grounds, Chloe is further drawn into a mystery involving a rare variety of Swiss cheese, a nearly extinct heirloom flower . . . and plain, old-fashioned murderous greed.
The First Stone
As clever as the setting is and as pointed and relevant the political resonances are, the real joy of the novel is in the writing itself, every page sparkling with cutting, witty, hard-boiled noir dialogue that feels natural and unforced, the novel gathering pace and momentum with a tense explosive situation that seems to be rapidly, and somewhat ironically, going straight to hell.
The Day of the Locust This book will really live with you long after you've read it. I can easily bring to mind that spectacular cockfight (a fine bit of descriptive writing), Faye's teasing, Harry Greener, the midget, the scene in the nightclub when the crossdresser sings, and that final horrific scene when the riot breaks out in LA. You can skip West's other novels and you won't be very deprived, but The Day of the Locust is not to be missed.
The Dark Glamour: A 666 Park Avenue Novel The sequel to 666 Park Avenue is an entertaining chick lit urban fantasy starring a woman in peril from malevolent witches led by a matriarch who needs the birth of the next generation replacement. The story line is fast-paced while Jane wonders what happened to her life ever since she married the offspring of a she-demon. Although the asides while in trouble seem unlikely semi-noir for a kick butt rookie, readers will enjoy The Dark Glamour.
The Cydonia Objective In this third volume of the Pharos Initiative, author Sakmyster taps a bevy of ancient myths and marries them to such contemporary mysteries as NASA astronauts who claim they were silenced after reporting that UFOs monitored their flights. The resulting tale is richly woven and intriguing, but Sakmyster never forgets to keep the human dimension the tension among his characters - sharp and constantly present. If you enjoy character-driven speculative fiction well grounded in human history, and find complex storylines interesting, you will love this series in general and this book in particular.
The Blood Code The Blood Code is an exciting adventure with plenty of secrets along the way. Just when you have it all figured out another twist will keep you guessing about the final end game, exactly what a spy story should do. The ending is great and hopefully we will see bits of Anya and Ryan again. Misty Evans does a great job weaving real-life details and bringing the reader into the CIA world. Love this series. A definite must read.
The Blessed
Lacey Bishop is in a heap of trouble. She's a young woman who, for several years, has lived with a Kentucky pastor's family. Rejected by her father, Lacey earns her keep by taking care of the pastor's wife and an abandoned child. When the pastor's wife dies, Lacey "does what has to be done." She up and marries the pastor so that she can continue to care for the child. Through a troubling series of events, Lacey and her new family finally join the Shaker community.
The Academy Wonderful, speedy read. Rawlins has created many unique and intriguing characters. I was riveted from the first scene. Not to be written off an another formula fantasy, this book is for grownups and combines fantasy, horror, and action to create a new reading experience.
The 9th Girl Tami Hoag has done it again with her latest novel The 9th Girl. The "it" is make an exceptional read that's full of twists, turns, suspense, and some really dead bodies. The 9th Girl begins with the body of an unrecognizable girl coming from the trunk of a car on New Year's. She is believed to be the 9th victim of a serial killer dubbed the Doc Holliday. All of his victims are discovered during or around holidays and have similar MOs. Nikki Liska and Sam Kovak are called into the crime scene and immediately get on the case.
The 1st Victim: A Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska Story, featuring an excerpt of The 9th Girl New Year’s Day is a time for new beginnings, but Minneapolis homicide detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska are focused on endings: specifically, the tragic end of their latest murder victim, an unidentified young woman discovered on the side of the freeway. Believed to be the victim of a serial killer, Kovac and Liska are determined to do the girl the small justice of returning her body to her family as they investigate her case, but it is no simple task matching the broken corpse to any of the scores of missing persons reports, especially when no one seems to be looking for her.
Sleight of Paw: A Magical Cats Mystery The two cats with their paranormal powers make Sleight of Paw a precious cozy with their telepathic communication and deep need to protect their Kath. Their human pet has adapted nicely to the Burl Ives picture postcard town as she has made good friends (and not just the cats) and is falling in love with a local detective though she keeps her distance having been burned once. The whodunit is super as there are several suspects including friends who could be the killer as the amateur sleuth and her two feline companions investigate the homicide of a highly regarded former teacher.
Shapeshifted (Edie Spence)
SHAPESHIFTED has shifted the Edie Spence series into a new direction for Edie. Hopefully, her new friends and a few old ones will rally around resilient and engaging urban fantasy heroine. I'm looking forward to see what's in store for Edie's troublesome life in DEADSHIFTED, the 4th book in the Edie Spence which comes out December 31st 2013 by St. Martin's Paperbacks.
Savvy Thirteen is when a Beaumont’s savvy hits and with one brother who causes hurricanes and another who creates electricity, Mibs Beaumont is eager to see what she gets. But just before the big day, Poppa is in a terrible accident. And now all Mibs wants is a savvy that will save him. In fact, Mibs is so sure she’ll get a powerful savvy that she sneaks a ride to the hospital on a rickety bus with her sibling and the preacher’s kids in tow. After this extraordinary adventure full of talking tattoos and a kidnapping not a soul on board will ever be the same.
Pros and Cons: A Short Story This is a clever concept. We have Kate O'Hare an FBI agent with a mission. She just has to nail con artist Nicolas Fox, who has a very unique way of ripping people off. Plus he happens to aim for the, let us just say, less desirable of the rich, so you don't feel to badly for those who have been scammed. Well maybe for the organ transplant patients you will. We'll have to see just how that all works out! We won't know how that works out until the full book comes out The Heist: A Novel.
Promise Me This I loved that Charlie was from TN and moved to Cali. I've never been there, but Jones made me feel like I was on the beach with Charlie and Jhett on multiple occasions. Her descriptions made me long to feel sand beneath my toes...even though I never have. That's good writing!
Prey One of the my biggest issues with Ms. Howard's later books is that the characters, both goods guys and villains, spend a lot of time in reflective thought about their lives, their feelings and their motivations. Quite frankly, I could care less what a villain's feelings are and much prefer dialogue and interaction between hero and heroine. Unfortunately, she starts the first hundred or more pages exactly this way and I almost threw my kindle across the room when we got a few pages from the point of view of the bear... yes, the observations of a bear! Around the halfway point, she pulls Angie and Dare together and although they spend the remainder of the book in close contact, they're mostly dead on their feet and not increasing the sexual tension factor. When Angie and Dare engage in dialogue, it is witty and fresh, and they have all the ingredients for great chemistry, but the execution of it fell a little flat. Although not a bad read, I think this book would have been much better if Angie and Dare were brought together much sooner to see the sparks fly. That and I think Ms. Howard took a few liberties with the bear. Black bears are known to attack if hungry, but are very territorial over their food. This was a killer bear who was definitely not hungry and leaving a trail of half uneaten bodies.
Possess
Not only is this one a supernatural, wading deep into the world of demons, but it's a mystery as well and McNeil has blended these two elements perfectly. Holding very strong roots into realism and a contemporary setting that any reader can understand, imagine, and insert themselves into, Possess is a book that a range of fans will enjoy. With the new story line, intriguing and fleshed out characters, and creeptastic scenes, Possess is a stellar debut with plenty to offer.
Pirate King: A Novel of Suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes Since the whole point of the series may have been to use Holmes as a launching-point for Russell, the stories may drift further and further from the Holmesian root. I think that a shame. I also think it a shame that Russell shadows Holmes so completely. The partnership of Russell and Holmes was a daring, outrageous stroke. It made the series in the beginning, and the forgetting of it may be the series's unmaking.
Never Too Far I read this book in about 24 hours. It kept my attention with all the near-death experiences Joe and Mary face in hopes of saving their family.
More Bitter Than Death The second Siri Bergman psychological suspense (see Some Kind of Peace) is an entertaining dark Swedish thriller starring a psychologist who hears the first hand accounts of the brutal side of love through her patients. The profound look into women's issues should be required reading by politicians, but the depth also decelerates the intriguing intertwining mystery.
Long Walks, Last Flights & Other Strange Journeys Long Walks, Last Flights & Other Strange Journeys is full of adventure, hardship, humor, even a few scares, but what struck me was how close I came to weeping in certain parts - tears of loss for sure, but sometimes tears just from the utter wonderment and joy that some of these stories contained. Ken reached into my soul and brought up real, honestto-goodness feelings from my childhood, from my young adulthood, hell, even from a week ago. What an absolute treat.
Lethal Attraction: Against the Rules/Fatal Affair Detective Sergeant Sam Holland needs a big win to salvage her career and her confidence after a disastrous case. The perfect opportunity arises when she's assigned to the investigation of a senator's murder. But she has to team up
with Nick Cappuano, the senator's friend and chief of staff…and the man she had a memorable one-night stand with years earlier. Their sexual chemistry still sizzles, but sleeping with a material witness is a mistake Sam can't afford especially when the bodies keep piling up.
Killing Sarai There are no words for how incredible this book was. Such an unusual story that was expertly written. I will warn that there is a cliffhanger. I am really looking forward to book 2. Amazing amazing book.
Kade Holly shit I thought Chase was good but they just keep getting better this book is great I love kade from the start he is a great guy I like Nikki too but sometimes I just wanted to scream at her lol I can't wait to read all the other men's story and I hope she cont to tell the other couples story in her books too so we can see how they all do in there relationship.I recommend this book to everyone. I was kinda sad it had to end but will be watching for the next book...
Her Last Breath This was exciting book to read. I could barely put it down and read it in two days. I have found some of her previous books a little gruesome but that was not the case here. It was suspenseful and I did not completely figure out the ending by the end. This is a great summer read that'll keep you up nights because you'll want to see what happens next.
Haze Gaby Winters’ nightmares have stopped but she still can’t remember her old life. Still can’t quite believe she is one of the Rephaim—the wingless half-angels who can shift from place to place, country to country, in the blink of an eye. That she was once the Rephaim’s best fighter. That demons exist. That Rafa has stayed.
Finding Isadora Most importantly this is a journey of discovery for the main characters as they realise that what they THINK they want and know about life and relationships isn't necessarily what will eventually bring them happiness.
Eyes of the Innocent: A Mystery Having snagged Shamus and Nero Wolfe awards for his superb debut novel, Faces of the Gone, I was curious to see if the dreaded sophomore slump would strike Parks's second effort. Not to worry. No less a writer than Michael Connelly says of Eyes, "this book held me hostage until the last page." Count me a fellow prisoner. Parks writes with a nimble, pageturning style. His books are compulsively readable. Carter Ross, his lead character combines a journalist's penetrating vision with Jon Stewart's sense of humor. And the deftly handled plot keeps you guessing. This series is a real keeper!
Different What is happening to eighteen-year-old Jay and what is she changing into? How did she manage to lift a bus and what is the blue light that flows from her hands? Who is the boy being eaten alive by rats and why were the sick blocking the streets where she lived? Could she ever risk having children . . . knowing her mother had laid an egg? What was she really, this product of an unlawful genetic experiment? The Prime Minister of the UK and the Vice President of the USA know who she is. Twenty-years earlier, they created her parents in a secret lab. They had killed them and believed Jay to be dead. Now they must make sure of it, to protect themselves. The freak has to die!
Charm & Strange Charm & Strange is this mysterious enigma where everything slowly, and brilliantly falls into place. I couldn't stop reading Charm & Strange at all and I actually read it in one sitting! I kept telling myself that I had to go to sleep but I just couldn't stop reading.
Blood Rights (House of Comarre) Born into a life of secrets and service, Chrysabelle's body bears the telltale marks of a comarre a special race of humans bred to feed vampire nobility. When her patron is murdered, she becomes the prime suspect, which sends her running into the mortal world...and into the arms of Malkolm, an outcast vampire cursed to kill every being from whom he drinks. Now, Chrysabelle and Malkolm must work together to stop a plot to merge the mortal and supernatural worlds. If they fail, a chaos unlike anything anyone has ever seen will threaten to reign.
Ancient Eyes Wilson is a gifted writer and in Ancient Eyes we see his talent shine. In places the writing is nothing less than beautiful, rhythmic and lyrical, pulling us deeper into the story with every passing page. He tells a story we've all heard
before, the battle between good and evil, in a way that makes us wonder about the capacity for both deep within ourselves. He uses religion as the battle ground, but harkens back to older, deeper faiths, where God was a part of the land itself and Satan was more than just a mystical figure tempting us from the shadows.
Always Watching It is certainly a fast read and the cult aspect adds a fascinating layer to both Nadine's past and present. The plot takes some surprising turns, though at times the stranglehold of the cult defies belief just a bit. Nadine herself is not always the most likable of characters, and it the novel would perhaps have been a bit stronger had Stevens chose to write about a new woman rather than the calm professional seen in her first novels. Her behavior here detracts somewhat from the authority, work ethic and skill shown previously. Still, it's an entertaining read with a downright gripping conclusion. I am already looking forward to reading Steven's future novels.
All Our Pretty Songs In the lush and magical Pacific Northwest live two best friends who grew up like sisters: charismatic, mercurial, and beautiful Aurora, and the devoted, watchful narrator. Each of them is incomplete without the other. But their unbreakable bond is challenged when a mysterious and gifted musician named Jack comes between them.
A Hunger in the Soul Remember hearing about how Stanley found Livingstone? Remember the 1939 Spencer Tracy movie glorifying this "great" human effort? Well, hold onto your hats, folks! Here's the REAL story of how Stanley found Livingstone dressed in science fictional clothes. Stanley was not the great man popular sentiment and Hollywood has led us to believe he was. Hugo and Nebula award-winner Mike Resnick tells us the real story in a genre where the unusual, the cruel, and the vicious aren't subject to the political correctness so rampant in today's world. I recommend this book to any lover of science fiction AND truth.
The Root of All Trouble: A Nina Quinn Mystery The latest Nina Quinn mystery is one of the best. Heather Webber does an excellent job bring to life the Gossip Mill and evolving the characters. Those who are already hooked on this series will not be disappointed. If you have not read any of the previous books, you could likely read this without feeling lost. I highly recommend this book and any others by Heather Webber.
The Toss of a Lemon The author does not interpret events for the reader, but simply reports the incidents as they occur, from the points of view of the various characters. An ingenious web of familial relationships is woven in which personalities and politics are all made plain without fanfare or needless drama.
The Year That Follows The empathy with which the two protagonists are treated is impressive, and the story moves at a good pace. Themes of family bonds and second chances are conveyed in a straightforward style that manages to avoid sentimentality.
Trouble Vision (A Raven's Nest) Wonderful book! Couldn't put it down. Got on my kindle this am and just finished! Can't wait for next one! Kate Kingsbury under any name is great reading!
TransAtlantic This book braids Ireland's struggle with humanity's struggle to free itself from the chains of the past, while acknowledging that those chains annex our future. It is a sublime, extraordinary tale that gradually, very gradually becomes an intimate story about four individual, ordinary women framed by the historic figures that have contributed to big world changes. By the end, it was these four generations of women that moved me most of all. Their stories are seared into my heart. I don't need to tell you anything about them in my review. As you read, I am confident that you will agree. This will go down as one of my fifty greatest novels of all time.
When the Women Come Out to Dance Some of the stories read like sketches or treatments for screenplays. The Sisco story stands on its own, though it could easily have been a subplot from a novel or the television show. I thought the western stories were the most fully realized. All of the fictions turn on whether the good guy gets what he/she wants. The storytelling is of the cinematic variety, hinging on action riddled with reversals. Leonard uses words economically and every single one is well chosen, strong, vivid. In an era when typos and editing slips mar too many books, this edition (hardcover at least) is free of them and is also assembled with an attractive lay-out design.
True Evil
There was so much more to this story that kept me at the edge of the seat that I wish I could tell about, but it would simply give away too much. The character development is flawless and so is the dialogue in this non stop ride of a thriller. The science behind cancers and diseases is well presented and very interesting while the main heroine is as real to me as my best friend. True Evil dealt with some really bad people and the quest to catch them while engaging in an iron battle of wits. I can't wait to read more of this author as this was a delectable and engrossing book, something that will haunt my memory for a long time. I promise that the ending will be even better than one can predict and the book will leave a deep hunger for more good reading. This story will leave any bookworm full to the brim and deeply satisfied!
The Gamal Really enjoyed writing style and storyline.found it difficult to put down. Lucky I was on holidays. Great first novel for Collins.
The Fractal Murders When an attractive math professor, Jayne Smyers, discovers that three specialists in fractal geometry are dead, she alerts the FBI. When they tell her it was just a coincidence, she hires Pepper Keane. With his sidekick, unemployed astrophysicist Scott McCutcheon, Pepper leaves no stone un-turned, and comes up with more suspects than he bargained for.
I could not put this book down. It was that good. The humor was great, and Pepper Keane's wisecracks reminded me a lot of Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels.
The Footprints of God I was most impressed with how well Iles defined and explained the concept of God as it relates to the story. In most similar stories that I've read, this kind of thing usually comes off sounding pretty silly, but Iles handled it very well, without getting too incredibly abstract. I also really liked the concept that the Trinity computer when done would have to be something elegant and simple, rather than a complicated mess of machinery. I enjoyed the book all the way through for the interestig subject and the fast-paced storyline, but at the end, I was left a little unsatisfied by the conclusion. Not to say that it was bad, but I was hoping for something more spectacular considering events leading up to it. I would recommend this book for any fans of Iles' or anyone who likes a good fast-paced story.
The Fallen Angel Silva delivers an enlightening glimpse into the inner workings of the Vatican, the serious problem of stolen antiquities, and the convoluted ways in which terror organizations raise money to conduct their bloody operations. As usual, the author holds our attention with his fast-paced, action-filled, and suspenseful plot. Can Gabriel and company prevent a cataclysmic event from upsetting the world's delicate balance of power? Allon's almost superhuman ability to vanquish his enemies requires a sizeable suspension of disbelief. Still, fans of this "legendary operative" and "gifted but melancholic loner" will likely find Silva's latest entry every bit as diverting as its predecessors.
The Christie Curse (A Book Collector Mystery) The characters were what made this book fun to read. The loving but quirky relationship between Jordan and her uncles is great. Jordan's relationship with her employer is well developed as is her ability to connect with the other characters, any of whom could be a murderer. Most of them were so nice that you did not want them to be evil. The end was a surprise and did make sense but I don't like solutions that had no clues given during the rest of the book. The plot basis of a missing play was rather contrived, especially in the setting of a small town but the book was fun and gives hints of better things to come. What is up with the cat? Will Jordan become a cat lover? Will officer Smiley be back?
The Blackpool Highflyer: A Jim Stringer Mystery A literary and atmospheric mystery set in 1905 England, this novel fleshes out the character of Jim Stringer and puts him on a quest to discover the identity of the saboteur of the Blackpool train. The mystery itself is not the most interesting part of the book it is the rich descriptions, the amazing characters, and the humanity of Jim that make this a great read.
The Alchemy of Murder This is a superb historical mystery told in the first person by the intrepid heroine. Her obsessive hunt for the prostitute killer spans two continents and several years as the audience obtains a feel for time and place. The two literary greats seem a bit forced into the plot although both assist the intrepid reporter and enhance the era on the other hand Pasteur is a great inclusion especially his tour of the Paris sewers. Filled with drawings to better describe some of the happenings, readers will enjoy the escapades of four famous people trying to solve the serial murder crimes of the late nineteenth century.
Sunset Express: An Elvis Cole Novel You're not into this Elvis Cole case too long before you realize that Crais is using the OJ Simpson case as a model. And if you haven't read any of Crais' Elvis Cole novels, you'll also realize before too long that Elvis and his partner Joe Pike are similar in tone to Robert Parker's Spenser and Hawk. But Robert Crais has the ability to take these similarities and craft them into a series and a detective novel with it's very own flavor. Cole is hired to check out a detective who may have planted evidence. His findings aren't consistent with what the defense team wants and Elvis is forced to switch teams and work with Joe Pike to clear up a mess he helped create. Elvis' romantic tangle with a lawyer from Louisiana is brought into play and takes up a little too much page time, but the the climatic 3rd of the book is as satisfying a set of confrontations as anyything in the Spenser series. Not all of the bad guys get their just desserts and Elvis vows at the end to hound those who get away, which would make a nice story for a future case. A great PI novel especially for those who distrust lawyers and the media, which is just about everybody but lawyers and members of the media.
Stalking the Angel Robert Crais is one of the rare authors of private detective novels to succeed in making me laugh as well as making me biting my nails. The plot is intense. Pike is at the same time hard and tender, and Cole is as much funny as eager to solve the mystery. Always a good reading. You are lucky, you who have not still read any the novels of Crais!
Spandau Phoenix This novel involves Germans, Russians, Israelis, British, Americans, South Africans, and Libyans. Iles' extraordinary tale takes the reader on a terrifying adventure into the past, which leads to the chilling realities of the present, that could very well result in worldwide nuclear war. His action scenes are so well written that they are almost visual, and certainly bring this drama to life. The main characters are complex and well defined, individually and in their relationships to each other. The ending will have you on the edge of your seat. In spite of the book's unnecessary length, and a confusing narrative at the beginning, I do recommend "Spandau Phoenix" to fans of mystery-thrillers and espionage novels. Bottom line - great plot and characters overcome any flaws.
Song of Slaves in the Desert
"Song of Slaves in the Desert" is an epic ride through some of the darkest periods in human history. The story of Nathaniel and Liza is so engrossing, and the language so heart-rendingly gorgeous, I enjoyed every moment of the journey.
Sleep No More As I said earlier, I was uncomfortable at first with the idea of the transference of the soul that is the epicenter of this book. However, these fears were quickly put to rest thanks to Iles ability to weave an intricate, effective story. By the time the book really gets moving, readers will find themselves ready to believe anything that Iles asks them to believe. His characters are well developed and readers will relate to them, especially Cole and Waters himself. If the reader allows some suspension of reality and allows Iles to take them along for the ride, I really can't think of a person who would not love this book for the excellent thriller that it is...
Sisterland Now, years later, their different paths have led them both back to their hometown of St. Louis. Vi has pursued an eccentric career as a psychic medium, while Kate, a devoted wife and mother, has settled down in the suburbs to raise her two young children. But when a minor earthquake hits in the middle of the night, the normal life Kate has always wished for begins to shift. After Vi goes on television to share a premonition that another, more devastating earthquake will soon hit the St. Louis area, Kate is mortified. Equally troubling, however, is her fear that Vi may be right. As the date of the predicted earthquake quickly approaches, Kate is forced to reconcile her fraught relationship with her sister and to face truths about herself she’s long tried to deny.
Serendipity When life hands Phoebe Andrews her dream job, she’s ecstatic. That is, until she realizes that in order to pursue her dream she’ll have to give up her cosmopolitan lifestyle in Chicago and move to Nashville. As if leaving all she knows behind wasn’t enough, a car accident on her first day in town does nothing to convince the city girl that country living is all it’s cracked up to be.
Rumors of the Undead (30 Days of Night, Book 1) This was a surprisingly good vampire story! Apparently, it is based on the graphic novels in a series entitled 30 DAYS OF NIGHT. I haven't read any of the graphic novels but this book worked extremely well as a stand alone novel. Andy Gray and Paul Norris are FBI agents searching for Stella Olemaun, a suspected terrorist due to her stockpiling of weapons. Paul is killed by a vampire- only Paul doesn't truly die but instead becomes a vampire himself. Andy begins investigating on his own and soon discovers that Stella is no terrorist. Instead, Stella and her husband, Eben, were involved in a vampire attack on the town of Barrow, Alaska, and Stella is only trying to remain safe while warning the world about the vampires. Andy doesn't believe in vampires initially but soon learns that the FBI is aware of vampires and trying to keep their existence a secret. The FBI attempts to stop Andy's investigations only Andy gets angry and hits his boss, resulting in his suspension. Andy continues researching while drinking heavily and wakes up one morning to find his wife and children dead from a vampire attack. Andy is obviously the prime suspect and so he begins moving from place to place, trying to gather evidence that vampires are real and hoping to locate and kill Paul. He befriends a biochemist and sets a trap for the vampires only to be outsmarted by them. The story includes flashbacks to Stella's account of what happened in Barrow and the authors do an excellent job of weaving the past with the present. Highly recommended!
Royal Mistress This was a well written, fascinating look at a woman caught between powerful men at a very tumultuous time in history. She remained true to herself and to the people from where she came in spite of being cared for by the King. Ms. Easter Smith knows how to draw her reader into her characters' worlds so you almost feel as if you are right there with them. I can't wait for her next book!
Reversible Errors Turow is a good writer. His characterizations are excellent and he has a real talent for writing dialogue. The plot of Reversible Errors is constructed well, perhaps a bit too cleverly. His primary protagonist, Arthur Raven, is an extremely sympathetic character a bit of an everyman who succeeds on the basis of diligence and decency rather than talent. This is an ambitious book and Turow largely succeeds in his aim of exploring regret and the consequences of unfortunate choices in life. Some parts of the book are affecting. This is probably the first of Turow's books that deserves to be classified with other works that surpass their genre such as the better novels of PD James or John Le Carre.
Pronto PRONTO is snazzy. It's loaded with notable characters and an enticing plot. The passage where Gloria, Jimmy Caps girlfriend, tells Nick Testa about Jimmy Cap's reason for wanting to visit Butterfly World is funny. The same story is repeated later from Jimmy's viewpoint. It's still funny. But Leonard's prose might be a small problem for some readers. It reads like people talk and think at the same time. His use of the language as a tool for his stories is brilliant. However, high school sophomore English students should probably not read Leonard for a few years as many of them already use sentence fragments and run-ons without his genius.
Presumed Innocent The sharply written and sometimes earthy dialogue as well as Turow's entertaining and often dryly humorous prose keep things moving along quickly. "Innocent," as its predecessor did more than two decades ago, demonstrates how difficult it is to mete out perfect justice in an imperfect world where so many people lie to themselves and others.
Pleading Guilty An extremely well crafted legal drama/mystery. Turow has always developed his characters superbly, and his study of narrator Mack Malloy is masterful. Malloy is a deep and believable character, and his personality gives Turow even
better opportunities than usual to exercise his wit how often does a page turner legal thriller also have you rolling with laughter on several occasions? I highly recommend this book, and I second the notion that this is the perfect place to start if you're wondering if Scott Turow is for you.
Playing Games The lead characters are people you'd like to know, the situations are understandably bizarre, and even if you know its a guaranteed happy ending, Ms Clare makes it so much fun to get there. If you're looking for uncomplicated entertainment, this is a book for you.
Personal Injuries To Robbie Feaver the law is all about making a play-to a client, a jury, or a judge. But when the flashy, womanizing, multimillion-dollar personal injury lawyer is caught offering bribes, he's forced to wear a wire. Even as the besieged attorney looks after his ailing wife, Feaver must also make tapes that will hurl his friends, his enemies, his city, and a particular FBI undercover agent into a crisis of conscience and law. Now Robbie Feaver is making the play of his life.
Osprey Island A perfect novel for summer, Nissen sets the story on a New Jersey island of few inhabitants until summer when vacationers come in droves to the Lodge which has seen better days. The housekeepers are young women from Ireland and the waiters and other service workers are college kids, mostly young men. The maintenance manager and head housekeeper are drunks married to one another and their young son, Squee, is the crux of the story together with the Lodge itself.
Murder for Choir (A Glee Club Mystery) The story was already shaping up to be fantastic, but once Paige's love life got a little wild the story became even more superb! Murder For Choir doesn't only appeal to show tune and Glee fans, but mystery and suspense lovers, too. I'm looking forward to the next bout of trouble that blows Paige's way in the next installment, End Me A Tenor!
Mortal Fear I found the caracters and the plot mesmerizing. It caught and kept my attention from the very start. I almost felt like I was right there watching the tale unfold between Harper and the other caracters. It also made me think of the very real
dangers that the internet could hold, if the information one doles out so readily on here is'nt watched over very carefully. From a little country farmhouse in Mississippi to a large internet company in New York there's romance, murders, and plenty of action to keep your attention. Just my kind of reading!
Loose Ends Kate is a stunner and her brother is a total charmer, but what is their dark secret? Susan Moody will keep you guessing till the end! I am a great afficionada of her books - have read most if not all of them - and can confidently say that her latest title is up there with the best of them.
Ladies' Night A great story that kept me up til 4:30am so I could finish it. Mary Kay Andrews always delivers a great story.
L.A. Requiem L.A. Requiem has its funny stuff, but it's darker than the rest. The book deals more with Joe Pike and his background. At times I felt like I was eavesdropping on Pike, knowing things about him he probably doesn't want us to know. Crais' portrayal of L.A. is a character of itself. The fires in the hills act as a metaphor for the conflict/tension building. The plot is great they're searching for a killer. But Crais' use of language, thought, description really supercedes the plot. I've always been a big fan of Crais and grab as much of him as I can. I recommend him all the time at our store. L.A. Requiem is outstanding and more readers will take notice.
Kitty Kitty Bang Bang Looking for a little laughter and a light hearted mystery? Love cats and pups? Then you'll love this sweet mystery with its pet psychologist, Caro Lamont, investigating her neighbor's murder amid the opening of the newest cat paintings at California hot spot, Laguna Beach. You'll meet her murdered neighbor's long lost sister straight from the heartland and together they are a hoot as they try to track down the killer.
Joshua's Folly
The story is straight forward, even predictable. So why give this book five stars? Because Taylor Dean is so good at writing the little moments that defines the attraction, the developing friendship and the growing passion between a woman and a man. Her characters are so likeable. Their banter is fun. I was totally wrapped up in their story. And when they hit on that inevitable rough patch in the road, I cried for Marisa.
Intrusion This book had me walking around my house checking my windows and doors to make sure they were locked. I could feel the terror the whole family was going through during the whole ordeal.
Insomnia (The Night Walkers) The world building was brilliant! I think definitely may favorite part of the book. The dreams were amazingly described. It felt surreal and like an intrusion into someone's mind. I honestly can't think of another book that used that kind of an idea. I loved that it had consequences to Parker, because that made it believable. But I was left with sooo many questions about the whole watcher thing, I sure do hope that some of the will be answered. Saying that I like that Johansson didn't answer all or even allot- but rather one got to get to know the bits and pieces Parker worked out as he did.
Indigo Slam: An Elvis Cole Novel Mystery fans will see a certain similarity between the Cole books and Robert Parker's Spenser. Both feature wisecracking tough private eyes with mysterious but generally good-hearted partners. Unfortunately, over the years, I found Spenser getting unlikably smug and self-righteous, while Cole remains a pleasure to read about. And both Cole and Pike are much more well-developed than either Spenser or Hawk, neither of whom even reveal their full names (the single-named hero is a bit of a tired gimmick nowadays...Richard Stark's Parker is forgiven because he's been around since the mid-60's). You don't need to have read other Elvis Cole novels to get into this one...
Ignited This is a great military romantic suspense story. I think it's hard to pull off the realism of such a gritty theme, but Kaylea Cross does it well. Khalia's father died at the hands of radical militants so after his death she takes over the non-profit group he had started in Pakistan to help with the education of girls. She's nervous about going there and I liked that aspect of her personality. She's a realistic character who understands that her life will be in danger when she goes to Pakistan. Yet, she does it anyway.
Identical
I am only almost done with IDENTICAL, but i was curious if everyone was as emotionally gut punched by this book as i am. It feels like reading a diary, i love love love the poety format. it makes the read really engaging for me. But the content of this book is just following me around in my daily life and in its own way haunting me. i feel so much for the charactures. while reading it i am filled with so much emotion and conflict and discust and concern, that it is truely a really powerful read. it is definatly not for your 15 year old to sit down and read. this book is a psychological ride through the perspective of some very troubled girls. i dont think this is a book i will be able to forget about for a long time.
House of Dark Shadows (Dreamhouse Kings Series, Book 1) Robert Liparulo is known for pulse-pounding thrillers. With winners like Comes a Horseman, Germ, and Deadfall under his belt, he has truly left his mark on the genre. Now Liparulo graces his fans with a new young adult series that has everything we've come to expect from him and more. House of Dark Shadows is a fun story that is full of thrills and chills that never feel watered down for the young adult audience. Xander and David's mini adventures and discoveries are laced with just the right amount of action and intrigue to keep you nervously flying through the pages. The house itself is one of the strongest characters in the book, bringing a delightfully creepy tone to this well crafted tale. As always, Liparulo's writing carries deeper meaning beyond the action and thrills. At its heart this story is about the bond of family and love, and the power therein. With every new novel Liparulo continues to prove what an incredible storyteller he is and this new series is no exception. The end will leave you begging for more and loving every moment. This is Robert Liparulo at his best!
Hostage As expected, the quality of Mr. Crais' writing is high and cuts to the very bone with its razor-edge sharpness and terse dialogue. The chapters are brief, tense, and to the point yet, paced in such a manner that the reader may feel as if he's speeding straight into a head-on collision. This is what action-packed, suspense writing is all about, and this is an author who hits the mark every time out. When a writer like Robert Crais is in top form, nothing else comes even close to the kind rush you get from one of his novels. Buy the book, read it!
Heart of the Hunter The exotic setting, the cleverly crafted plot, the exciting action, and the rich and complex main character, make this a novel that has it all. Deon Meyer has created a real masterpiece that is not even one notch below the work of some great authors in the genre, like John le Carre.
Half a Life V.S. Naipaul is a literary craftsman which his "Half a Life won him the Nobel Prize in literature in this tale of a man snagged in cultural crosscurrents "Half a Life" is really two half novels . Naipaul is showing us persons with mixed
cultures who are confused ,and trying to remake themselves and their past. He shows Willie’s lack of knowledge and sexual impulses frankly Willie says “ we are not all born with sexual skill, and there are no schools where we can be trained “Naipaul illustrates intercontinental cultural differences truly… actually political and racial tensions of the novel . The fact that the story ends before the end of Willie's life hoping that Willie will be able to overcome the past and start a new life... the book is worth reading”
Forever Charmed: The Halloween LaVeau Series, Book 1 I have been a fan of Rose Pressey from day one. Her books are quirky, her characters are fanciful yet realistic, and her story lines are just plain fun. I thought she offered a good clean read, and I was right. However, this latest offering has me convinced that Rose Pressey had not yet found her stride in her previous series. Forever Charmed takes everything I loved about her previous works, dumps it all in the cauldron of Ms. Pressey's talented imagination and adds an extra dose of magic. You have got, got, got to read this book! I promise, you will be a Pressey fan for life!
Fiery Edge of Steel (A Noon Onyx Novel) Noon Onyx is the first female Host in memory to wield the destructive waning magic that is used to maintain order among the demons. Her unique abilities, along with a lack of control and a reluctance to kill, have branded her as an outsider among her peers. Only her powerful lover, Ari Carmine, and a roguish and mysterious Angel, Rafe Sinclair, support her unconventional ways.
Even Steven Even Steven was one of the better books I have read in awhile. The story begins with a young couple, camping outdoors on a romantic weekend with the hopes of overcoming their pain of not being able to have a child. Mysteriously, a child comes running from the woods, screaming, a toddler. The couple then becomes involved in a game of cat and mouse, a web of murder and drug smuggling, kidnapping, and intrigue. Their lives are turned upside down in a matter of an hour. The story is fast paced and interesting, and will keep you turning pages. The ending is....well, can't give that one away, let's just say it is an interesting turn of events. This author has a great grasp on how to entice and hold onto a reader.
Eternal Fire Sarah loves her new powers and she's having a great time learning to use them with her husband by her side. Unfortunately their contentment doesn't last for long. Ethano is back with a vengeance. He breaks into the castle and marks Sarah. And now something's happening to their bond, putting their lives in their enemies' hands.
Eternal Damnation
I am a huge fan of this series, this book was awesome, give great props to the authors for keeping this series amazing...
End Me a Tenor (A Glee Club Mystery) High School Show Choir Coach Paige Marshall has her hands full. She has just learned that two other high schools are performing the same number as her choir in the upcoming competition season. She needs to quickly replace that song, complete with choreography, with another before they debut at the holiday concert in just a few days.
Edge of Midnight If you've read other books in the series, you'll probably notice, like I did, that there's some repetition in the characterization and the dialogue. Sean calls Liv "princess" and is attracted to the few attempts she makes to be both haughty and demanding this is very reminiscent of Connor calling Erin "princess" in their book and also loving *her* attempts at haughty domination. To that end, with the exception of the enigmatic Tamara, I don't think McKenna is as adapt at developing complex female characters as she is at giving us a multi-layered male point of view. But by the end of this book, I thought most of the pieces fell into place. And I also loved the Miles/Cynthia subplot. This is definitely a pleasurable read that's hard to put down.
Dial C For Chihuahua (Barking Detective Mysteries) While I thought that "crotch" part could have been left out, I did enjoy the antics of Pepe and figured the author really knew about dogs and their behavior. Probably if a dog could really talk, much of the conversation would sound just like it did coming from Pepe's mouth. Overall, the story was enjoyable, the characters were brought to life and on the eccentric side (which is something I really like). This is definitely a book that you can escape into and forget your troubles. I will certainly be reading the next installment.
Devil's Peak This took me a little while to get into, but once I did I was hooked. The reason it took me a while to get into is that it isn't structured like a typical thriller. It is much more intrusive than most thrillers it really tries to get inside the heads of its character, most of whom are pathological in some way (reforming alcoholic, cutter, vengeful ex-ANC hitman and so on), and does a pretty good job. I certainly found the characters credible. It also gives a good, unsentinental account of life in contemporary, post-apartheid South Africa. I haven't read anything else by Meyer, but on the strength of this I certainly intend to do so in the future. It is a couple of points below my favourites, Peter Temple, Ian Rankin and Michael Connelly, but it is still very, very good.
Demolition Angel
Non-stop action, intense suspense, and plenty of twists along the way lead to an explosive climax. An intelligent, multi-dimensional thriller, Demolition Angel will keep your heart racing and keep you on the edge as you race through the pages. Crais at his best matches up with anyone else. Period.
Dead Sleep All in all Dead Sleep is an exciting, smart-paced book mixing a thriller scenario with aspects of the typical police procedural. I did find myself having to deal with a couple of small quibbles, such as the photojournalist outsmarting the entire FBI when it comes to investigation and psychoanalysis. However, they were minor compared to the entertainment provided by another imaginative story courtesy of Mr Iles.
Darkhouse Being a nursing student and a lover of books, it's hard to fit in the time to read a novel properly. I grab little snippets here and there and they last a few weeks. I went out of my way to finish my studies so that I could spend the whole day reading this story. It is unbelievably written, the characters are realistic and come to life on the pages! I don't normally write reviews, but Alex Barclay deserves every bit of praise for this novel. I am only saddened that it's the only kindle novel available by this author.
Counterplay I have been a great fan of the Karp series and eagerly await each new book. This one seems to lack the intensity the others have. The Karp family is definitely not front and center in this one .... where is the FAMILY! I feel like this book was done just to satisfy a deadline, definitely not a honor to the series.
Chihuahua Confidential (Barking Detective Mysteries) This book is great! It is very entertaining and keeps you wondering until the very end. I didn't want to put it down. I can't wait for the next book in the series! I love Pepe!!
Chasing Darkness It is hard to say if this is Crais's best book, because he consistently sets and meets a high standard. Suffice to say it is an excellent one, one of the best of the summer. It is exceptionally well-written, with memorable observations and descriptions that are delivered economically and with great skill. The polish on the individual sentences gleams. Highly recommended.
Charmed Again This book is wonderful! I could not wait for it to be released, and my impatience was just! The writing is wonderful, the characters enchanting. Rose Pressey writes in a way that is easy to follow and grabs you from the first sentence. I cannot wait for more!
Bluewing (The Frost Chronicles) Lia continues to be strong for her those around her, sacrificing greatly for the community good. Her reunion with Adam is endearing, and she finally recognizes his importance to her beyond a friend. We have some surprising revelations that create great interest. I love this series, just wish the stories were longer.
Bluetick Revenge (Pepper Keane Mystery) Mark Cohen has a way with words. His style is crystal clear, his characters jump out at the reader. His background in law, the military, and with self defense makes him a knowledgeable author. BLUETICK REVENGE is a mystery the reader can't put down, and Mark Cohen is a bright new star on the mystery scene
Blood Memory Blood Memory ranks right up there with the best of Greg Iles' novels to date, such as The Quiet Game and Mortal Fear. He is really talented at weaving complicated suspense with interesting characters, and in this book he returns to the Mississippi setting he knows so well. There are even appearances from characters and a storyline from two of his previous books, so that's a little extra fun for readers familiar with his work. What makes Iles' books even more appealing is the range of topics that he explores. Each book is a well-written suspense tale, and Blood Memory is no exception. I think it's his best book by far since The Quiet Game. The topical subject matter of Blood Memory is a troubling reality. While the basic plot idea of vengeance in this arena has been tried by other authors, Iles tells a more powerful story across the spectrum of predator and prey. This book really has a lot going for it: classic Iles suspense, detailed forensics, strong female characters, and vivid storytelling. Not only is it a hard book to put down, it's also one that will be hard to forget.
Becoming a Legend (The Blue Eyes Trilogy) (Volume 2)
The second book is out...hooray! Definitely getting better by each book. I have to say that I am so glad that Ari is starting to be her own person. Hopefully by the next book it won't be all about the boys, but more about her as a leader.
At All Costs If you want my opinion, I would say that the novel At All Costs by John Gilstrap is not really thrilling, in so far as the beginning is pretty suspenseful but the rest is a bit long-winded. The ending is rather good ,though, because it is very surprising to find out who the guy is who pulls the strings in the background and what his reasons are. In addition to that, it is very well illustrated how powerful the state is in manipulating facts and how unscrupulous. But to me the novel does not seem plausible in so far as it is impossible to escape like they do and I think the plot is too exaggerated. All in all, you can say that John Gilstrap writes in such a way that everybody can easily understand but I would prefer the plot to be a little clearer (there is to much detail). If you want to read a book about misjudgement by the state or arms trafficking it is the right thing for you.
After the Sky Fell Down Just finished reading this book. Was amazed at the ability of this author to articulate so much sensitivity blending a love story and the process
of mourning. Our culture does not readily accept a long mourning period and the difficulties of the ebbs and tides that follow for years. Megan was able to hit dead on all the mixed emotions that go on when a loved one passes away tragically. She shows an exceptional talent for touching a persons soul.
A Discourse in Steel: A Tale of Egil and Nix Egil and Nix have retired, as they always said they would. No, really they have! No more sword and hammer-play for them!
3 Bodies and a Biscotti This is a fun book that will have you puzzling over the killer while giggling as you get a peek inside the lives of some of Lexy's and Nan's friends. Whether you've read all the books in the series or this is your introduction, you'll enjoy the balance of humor, a touch of romance, and of course mystery.

Mindreading Animals: The Debate over What Animals Know about Other Minds 2011 | ISBN: 0262016052 | PDF | 264 pages | 4,5 MB Animals live in a world of other minds, human and nonhuman, and their well-being and survival often depends on what is going on in the minds of these other creatures. But do animals know that other creatures have minds? And how would we know if they do? In Mindreading Animals, Robert Lurz offers a fresh approach to the hotly debated question of mental-state attribution in nonhuman animals. Some empirical researchers and philosophers claim that some animals are capable of anticipating other creatures' behaviors by interpreting observable cues as signs of underlying mental states; others claim that animals are merely clever behavior-readers, capable of using such cues to anticipate others' behaviors without interpreting them as evidence of underlying mental states. Lurz argues that neither position
is compelling, and proposes a way to move the debate, and the field, forward. Lurz presents a new approach to understanding what mindreading in animals might be, offering a bottom-up model of mental-state attribution that is built upon cognitive abilities that animals are known to possess rather than on a preconceived view of the mind applicable to mindreading abilities in humans. Lurz goes on to describe an innovative series of new experimental protocols for animal mindreading research that overcome a persistent methodological problem in the field, known as the "logical problem" or "Povinelli's challenge." These protocols show in detail how various types of animals--from apes to monkeys to ravens to dogs--can be tested for perceptual state and belief attribution.
Anything for a Vote: Dirty Tricks, Cheap Shots, and October Surprises in U.S. Presidential Campaigns ISBN: 1594741565 | 2007 | MOBI | 304 pages | 4 MB A History of Mud-Slinging, Character Assassination, And Other Election Strategies Today’s political pundits express shock and disappointment when candidates resort to negative campaigning. But history reveals that smear campaigns are as American as apple pie. Anything for a Vote is an illustrated look at 200plus years of dirty tricks and bad behavior in presidential elections, from George Washington to Barack Obama and John McCain. Let the name-calling begin! • 1836: Congressman Davy Crockett accuses candidate Martin Van Buren of secretly wearing women’s clothing: “He is laced up in corsets!” • 1864: Presidential candidate George McClellan describes his opponent, Abraham Lincoln, as “nothing more than a well-meaning baboon!” • 1960: Former president Harry Truman advises voters that “if you vote for Richard Nixon, you ought to go to hell!” Full of sleazy anecdotes from every presidential election in United States history, Anything for a Vote is a valuable reminder that history does repeat itself, that lessons can be learned from the past (though they usually aren’t), and that our most famous presidents are not above reproach when it comes to the dirtiest game of all—political campaigning.
The Last Ride of the James-Younger Gang: Jesse James & the Northfield Raid 1876 ISBN: 1849085994 | 2012 | EPUB/MOBI | 80 pages | 3 MB/3 MB It was the beginning of the end for the James gang. In the past ten years Frank and Jesse James had risen from unknown ex-Confederate guerrillas to become the most famous outlaws in the world. A string of daring robberies had brought them fame, admiration, hatred, and a surprisingly small amount of wealth. In 1876 they planned their most daring raid yet--to ride hundreds of miles from their home state of Missouri to rob the First National Bank at Northfield, Minnesota. With them were Cole, Bob, and Jim Younger, famous outlaws and ex-bushwhackers like James brothers. Charlie Pitts, Bill Chadwell, and Clell Miller, no strangers to gunfighting and outlawry, rode with them. They hit the bank on 7 September 1876. At least they tried. The tellers fooled the outlaws into thinking they didn't have a key to the safe, and as half of the gang wasted time inside arguing, the outlaws standing guard outside were attacked by the enraged citizenry. A bloody gunfight ensued on Northfield's town square, and before the smoke cleared Chadwell and Miller lay dead and nearly all of the gang had been wounded. They hurried out of town with a posse hot on their trail. Frank and Jesse James split off from their comrades and fought a running battle with several posses before escaping, but the Younger brothers and Pitts made slow progress. They were eventually got cornered and fought a last-ditch gun battle with their pursuers. This book tells the story of one of the most daring bank jobs in American history. With most of the gang being former bushwhackers, they used many guerrilla tactics in the planning and execution of the raid, yet failed because of poor discipline and their own fame, which meant that every town in the Midwest had their guns loaded waiting to fight off bandits. Just before the Northfield job, the James gang robbed the Missouri Pacific No. 4 train in order to get money for horses, equipment, and traveling expenses. This heist is also covered in meticulous detail.
The Skies Belong to Us: Love and Terror in the Golden Age of Hijacking ISBN: 0307886107 | 2013 | MOBI | 336 pages | 2 MB In an America torn apart by the Vietnam War and the demise of sixties idealism, airplane hijackings were astonishingly routine. Over a five-year period starting in 1968, the desperate and disillusioned seized commercial jets nearly once a week, using guns, bombs, and jars of acid. Some hijackers wished to escape to foreign lands, where they imagined being hailed as heroes; others aimed to swap hostages for sacks of cash. Their criminal exploits mesmerized the country, never more so than when the young lovers at the heart of Brendan I. Koerner’s The Skies Belong to Us pulled off the longest-distance hijacking in American history. A shattered Army veteran and a mischievous party girl, Roger Holder and Cathy Kerkow commandeered Western Airlines Flight 701 as a vague protest against the war. Through a combination of savvy and dumb luck, the couple managed to flee across an ocean with a half-million dollars in ransom, a feat that made them notorious around the globe. Koerner spent four years chronicling this madcap tale, which involves a cast of characters ranging from exiled Black Panthers to African despots to French movie stars. He combed through over 4,000 declassified documents and interviewed scores of key figures in the drama—including one of the hijackers, whom Koerner discovered living in total obscurity. Yet The Skies Belong to Us is more than just an enthralling yarn about a spectacular heist and its bittersweet, decades-long aftermath. It is also a psychological portrait of America at its most turbulent, and a testament to the madness that can grip a nation when politics fail.

Eating on the Wild Side: The Missing Link to Optimum Health
ISBN: 0316227943 | 2013 | EPUB/MOBI | 416 pages | 2 MB/3 MB The next stage in the food revolution--a radical way to select fruits and vegetables and reclaim the flavor and nutrients we've lost. Eating on the Wild Side is the first book to reveal the nutritional history of our fruits and vegetables. Starting with the wild plants that were central to our original diet, investigative journalist Jo Robinson describes how 400 generations of farmers have unwittingly squandered a host of essential fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. New research shows that these losses have made us more vulnerable to our most troubling conditions and diseases-obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation, and dementia. In an engaging blend of science and story, Robinson describes how and when we transformed the food in the produce aisles. Wild apples, for example, have from three to 100 times more antioxidants than Galas and Honeycrisps, and are five times more effective in killing cancer cells. Compared with spinach, one of our present-day "superfoods," wild dandelion leaves have eight times more antioxidant activity, two times more calcium, three more times vitamin A, and five times more vitamins K and E. How do we begin to recoup the losses of essential nutrients? By "eating on the wild side"--choosing present-day fruits and vegetables that come closest to the nutritional bounty of their wild ancestors. Robinson explains that many of these jewels of nutrition are hiding in plain sight in our supermarkets, farmers markets, and U-pick orchards. Eating on the Wild Side provides the world's most extensive list of these superlative varieties. Drawing on her five-year review of recently published studies, Robinson introduces simple, scientifically proven methods of storage and preparation that will preserve and even enhance their health benefits: • Squeezing fresh garlic in a garlic press and then setting it aside for ten minutes before cooking it will increase your defenses against cancer and cardiovascular disease. • Baking potatoes, refrigerating them overnight, and then reheating them before serving will keep them from spiking your blood sugar. • Cooking most berries makes them more nutritious. • Shredding lettuce the day before you eat it will double its antioxidant activity. • Store watermelon on the kitchen counter for up to a week and it will develop more lycopene. • Eat broccoli the day you buy it to preserve its natural sugars and cancer-fighting compounds. The information in this surprising, important, and meticulously researched book will prove invaluable for omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike, and forever change the way we think about food.

The Life of Super-Earths: How the Hunt for Alien Worlds and Artificial Cells Will Revolutionize Life on Our Planet ISBN: 046502193X | 2012 | EPUB| 240 pages | 1 MB In 1543, Nicolaus Copernicus fomented a revolution when he debunked the geocentric view of the universe, proving instead that our planet wasn’t central to the universe. Almost five hundred years later, the revolution he set in motion is nearly complete. Just as earth is not the center of things, the life on it, it appears, is not unique to the planet. Or is it? The Life of Super-Earths is a breathtaking tour of current efforts to answer the age-old question: Are we alone in the universe? Astronomer Dimitar Sasselov, the founding director of Harvard University’s Origins of Life Initiative, takes us on a fast-paced hunt for habitable planets and alien life forms. He shows how the search for “super-Earths”— rocky planets like our own that orbit other stars—may provide the key to answering essential questions about the origins of life here and elsewhere. That is, if we don’t find the answers to those questions here first. As Sasselov and other astronomers have uncovered planets with mixes of elements different from our own, chemists have begun working out the heretofore unseen biochemistries that those planets could support. That knowledge is feeding directly into synthetic biology—the effort to build wholly novel forms of life—making it likely that we will first discover truly “alien” life forms in an earthly lab, rather than on a remote planet thousands of light years away. Sasselov tells the gripping story of a moment of unprecedented potential—a convergence of pioneering efforts in astronomy and biology to peer into the unknown. The Life of Super-Earths offers nothing short of a transformation in our understanding of life and its place in the cosmos.

The Warrior Diet: Switch on Your Biological Powerhouse For High Energy, Explosive Strength, and a Leaner, Harder Body English | 2007 | ISBN: 1583942009 | PDF | pages | 3,2 MB Along with the many benefits of leisure-class living comes obesity and its attendant ailments. In The Warrior Diet, Ori Hofmekler looks not forward but backward for a solution–to the primal habits of early cultures such as nomads and hunter-gatherers, the Greeks, and the Romans. Based on survival science, this book proposes not ordinary dietary changes but rather a radical yet surprisingly simple lifestyle overhaul. Drawing on both scientific studies and historical data, Hofmekler argues that robust health and a lean, strong body can best be achieved by mimicking the classical warrior mode of cycling—working and eating sparingly (undereating) during the day and filling up at night. Specific elements from the Warrior Diet Nutritional Program (finding ideal fuel foods and food combinations to reduce body fat) to the Controlled Fatigue Training Program (promoting strength, speed, and resilience to fatigue through special drills), literally reshape body and mind. Individual chapters cover warrior meals and recipes; sex drive, potency, and animal magnetism; as well as personalizing the diet for women. Featuring forewords by Fit for Life author Harvey Diamond and Fat That Kills author Dr. Udo Erasmus, The Warrior Diet shows readers weary of fad diets how to attain enduring vigor, explosive strength, a better appearance, and increased vitality and health.

Crash Diet - Lose 7lbs in 7 Days
English | ISBN: 0952600420 | Dec 16, 2007 | PDF | 72 pages | 4.2 mb Without being rich, young or naturally beautiful, you can still look enviably fabulous. It's a reassuring thought that even apparently flawless, effortlessly pretty women have figure problems. At least I have never met anyone yet, not even a model, who did not have something she wanted to put right. A small bulge here, a few rogue pounds there, are a cross most of us have to bear. Carelessly letting the pounds creep on means you have let go of one of life's great pleasures: the satisfaction of feeling and looking your best. Major lifestyle changes towards a healthier diet might be the best answer, but when the problem is a small one, a crash diet is a joy. It is incredible to think that twenty or thirty years of happiness and satisfaction with your shape can be bypassed for the lack of a little willpower or direction, and many women spend years in the misery of a weight problem they cannot or will not address. In this weight-conscious world probably the first thing we think when we say 'diet' is weight loss and sacrifice. For most of us, the best diet is lifelong, intelligent eating: keeping meals low-calorie, getting out of the habit of sugar in coffee or mindless snacks. It does not mean never putting a spoon into a pudding. It simply means compensating at the next meal and using common-sense. Crash diets might have had a bad press but they are practical and let's be honest, none of us is so famished that a week of restriction will cause harm. Crash dieting is merely civilised, a nice compromise between the pleasures of the moment and the pleasures of the future. Indeed, if you have stored a little fat through eating too much starch and sugar and drinking too much alcohol, a week or two of restriction and simple, nutritious food is a blessed holiday for your overburdened body. The mistake some people make is to start a diet as if it is the end of something. The simple truth is that a realistic translation of a diet is "now at last I can wear those skinny jeans...!"
