Tell It to the Trees
One freezing winter morning a dead body is found in the backyard of the Dharma family’s house. It’s the body of Anu Krishnan. For Anu, a writer seeking a secluded retreat from the city, the Dharmas’ “back-house” in the sleepy mountain town of Merrit’s Point was the ideal spot to take a year off and begin writing. She had found the Dharmas’ rental through a happy coincidence. A friend from university who had kept tabs on everyone in their graduating year – including the quiet and reserved Vikram Dharma and his first wife, Helen – sent her the listing. Anu vaguely remembered Vikram but had a strong recollection of Helen, a beautiful, vivacious, social and charming woman. But now Vikram had a new wife, a marriage hastily arranged in India after Helen was killed in a car accident. Suman Dharma, a stark contrast to Helen, is quiet and timid. She arrived from the bustling warmth of India full of the promise of her new life – a new home, a new country and a daughter from Vikram’s first marriage. But her husband’s suspicious, controlling and angry tirades become almost a daily ritual, resigning Suman to a desolate future entangled in a marriage of fear and despair.
American Quest American Quest is ripe with the supernatural and paranormal. A deep love story filled with friendship, trust and the power of never giving up. I found this to be a wonderful story that grabbed me from the first page and did not let go until the end. The characters of Bruce and Gloria were wonderfully brought to life, as were the several secondary characters. The scenes were vivid and easily brought the reader into the story. Several times, throughout American Quest, I was reminded of a mix between the t.v. show Charmed and the writing style of Heather Graham. That is just completely from my perspective and I cannot pinpoint exactly why I was reminded of these two things, other than perhaps the nature of the supernatural.
A Demon in My View Extremely well crafted, this book stays with you long after reading it. And you'll read it pretty quickly, because this is a tough one to put down. As a longtime Hercule Poirot/Miss Marple/Agatha Christie fan, I was so happy to discover the Inspector Wexford mysteries, and have read most of these. But this is no Wexford mystery. I was so disturbed by the subject matter, that after I read it, I put it out of sight for a while, but it never went out of mind, so be prepared. This is Rendell, one of the best mystery writers out there today, at her best.
A Most Unsuitable Match A Most Unsuitable Match was no exception. I was immediately drawn to the characters, and really loved Hannah and Lamar. Even Stephanie's less important characters never feel insignificant, like Minette (and her echo) and Mrs. Tatum's compassion. Each one adds depth and purpose, as well as the Scripture she effortlessly weaves into the story.
Blood in the Water (Alice Rice Mystery) This thrilling police-procedural debut from crime writer Gillian Galbraith introduces readers to Alice Rice, Edinburgh s latest fictional detective and a new female presence in the macho world of crime detection. Galbraith draws on her own experience to give a realistic portrayal of the medical and legal worlds. Smart and capable, but battling disillusionment and loneliness, Alice races against time and an implacable killer to solve a series of grisly murders amongst the professional elite of Edinburgh s well-to-do New Town.

Deep Black: Death Wave Good, action filled books are the norm for Coonts books and this one is no exception. Charlie and Lia are knee deep in adventure while back at home the politics tries to undermine all their efforts. Well written and a fun read.
Dying of the Light: An Alice Rice Mystery Midwinter, a freezing night in Leith, near Edinburgh's red light district. A policewoman's flashlight stabs the darkness in a snow-covered cemetery. The circle of light stops on a colourless, dead face. So begins the hunt for a serial murderer of prostitutes in Gillian Galbraith's third Alice Rice mystery, "The Dying of the Light". Partly inspired by the real-life killings of prostitutes in Ipswich, this novel explores a hidden world where sex is bartered for money and drugs. Off-duty, Alice's home life continues its uneven course. Her romance with the artist Ian Melville offers the prospect of happiness, but is plagued by insecurity. Her demented but determined neighbour, Miss Spinnell, offers a new challenge to Alice's patience at every meeting. This atmospheric thriller builds on the success of the first two Alice Rice mysteries, "Blood in the Water" and "Where the Shadow Falls", and it is Gillian Galbraith's most accomplished novel yet.
Elmer and the Dragon This book is a fun sequel to the original. It doesn't quite hold up to the nonsensical fun of the first one, but is still a great read. Early readers will enjoy being able to get through the short chapters themselves and should enjoy the plot and characters. This series is the perfect series to use to introduce kids to reading.
Lionheart Lionheart will not disappoint the multitude of Sharon Kay Penman fans. She weaves a very exciting story based on true characters and events during the third crusade circa 1190. There is romance and action aplenty , as in other SKP books , but there is also the chance to learn a lot of late 12th century European history. Whenever I came across a new character in Lionheart, I looked the person up in wikipedia or consulted my history library. SKP books ,including Lionheart, have been a great way for me to learn medieval English history. I have read them all several times ,from "When Christ and His Saints Slept" about the english civil war of the 12th century all the way through to "The Sunne in Splendour" about the War Of The Roses in the 15th century. The period covered in all her novels is from about 1120 to 1485. What a delightful way to learn and what an adventure it has been!
Manhattan in Reverse The book is rounded off by three stories set in his Commonwealth setting: Blessed by an Angel is scene-setting stuff for the Void Trilogy, establishing the tensions between the Higher and Advancer cultures and also providing family backstory for a major character from that series. The Demon Trap is the best story in the collection, pitting Paula Myo against an opponent who goes to immense lengths to avoid capture, but who in the end cannot escape responsibility for his actions. Manhattan in Reverse again features Myo, this time investigating an anomalous series of events on a frontier planet flooded with refugees from the Starflyer War. It's effective and entertaining - Myo is rapidly becoming Hamilton's signature character and is one of the better-realised female protagonists of recent SF - but the ending is a little too neat.

No Sorrow to Die: An Alice Rice Mystery As Heather Brodie kisses her lover goodnight, her disabled husband lies dead, his throat cut from ear to ear. Who wanted Gavin Brodie dead? Many people, including Gavin Brodie. Crushed by an incurable illness, he pleaded to be allowed to die. When Alice Rice is brought in to investigate, another terminally-ill man is found murdered. Is it just a coincidence? Or is there a serial killer with a mission to get rid of the sick and infirm? And Alice has more worries when she suspects her partner, Ian Melville, is lying to her. What secret is he hiding? This atmospheric thriller builds on the success of the first three Alice Rice mysteries, and is a passionate tale of deception, betrayal and the value of life and love.
Number the Stars Lowry has written an incredibly moving account of the Jews in World War II Denmark. Annemarie Johansen worries what might happen to her Jewish friend Ellen Rosen as the Nazis capture and "relocate" all Jews. During this time, Annemarie learns about the power of evil, the strength of family, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship. Lowry does a masterful job of showing how Annemarie grows up before our very eyes in the way she interacts with her little sister Kirsti, her friend Ellen, and the ever present Nazi officers. Annemarie learns several lessons throughout the book that she'll never forget. We won't forget them either. This is an incredibly moving book. There are very few books that absolutely everyone should read. This is one of them.
Storm Peak (A Jesse Parker Mystery) This is a serial-killer vs. detectives story in a snow covered popular ski-tourist town. Villian is twisted from past abuses, the Detective is wrestling his own demons. Fun, lots of action and surpries.
Sugar Daddy I love, love Lisa Kleypas' historical romances! There are a handful of books of hers that I reread every few months and to which I compare other historical romances. When I heard that she was going to write a contemporary, I was cautiously excited. Judith McNaught, my other all-time favorite romance novelist, made the switch from historical to contemporary romance as well and I did not find them as compelling as her historicals. With the exception of Paradise and Perfect, her contemporaries just do not contain the depth, intensity, and romance that her historicals had.
Survivor The entire scenario of this novel was gut-wrenching and horrifying. Snuff films are a sort of urban legend, but with a few deft strokes, it becomes conceivable that they could be real. The plot of Survivor explores this as a young couple get seperated in what appears to be a road rage incident. The woman is later kidnapped and we realize why: somebody wants to see her get killed in a snuff film. Just exactly who it is will shock you. She also has just found out she's pregnant. What she does to escape is the most awful part of the book, and it was actually painful for me to read and yet at the same time I couldn't put it down. Yes, horrible things happen in the novel, and the very mention that an infant is murdered is horrible enough (this isn't even shown in the novel, but referred to in flashbacks). But the gore is handled in a way that makes it realistic and ugly and I don't think it was written with the intention to shock. Considering the kind of characters the bad guys are, and the subject matter, I don't think it could have been handled any other way. I recommend this highly to anyone who loves seriously disturbing horror, and yet I can't stress strongly enough that this is not a book for everyone.

Theodosia and the Last Pharaoh This series has been fun reading! The author has wit and ability to keep you wanting to finish the book without putting it down. This book of the series follows Theodosia Throckmorton to Egypt where she discovers more about her mysterious birth and her abilities. Her mother returns to Egypt to look into the premise Theodosia discovers regarding the tomb of Thutmose III. The whole book takes place in Egypt, so there is no Sticky Will in London. We must assume he will turn up in the next book. There are plenty of bad guys and some new good guys, too. There is the usual attention to detail in all things "Egypt". Isis the cat is as faithful as ever. Kids will like this series and have fun traveling to pyramids via our gifted hero.
The Dragons of Blueland This is the final in the My Father's Dragon series. It lives up to the second book, but both fall a little short of the creativity and humor of the first. Still, fans will want to know how the series ends and won't be disappointed with the story presented here. As with the others, the storyline and vocabulary are perfect for the beginning reader or as a read aloud story. This series is a great way to introduce kids to the joys of reading. Parents will also enjoy the clever fantasy storylines. This is a fun book in a fun series that will entertain children of all ages.
The Girl of Fire and Thorns There are several times when Carson tempers the cleverness that Elisa shows with hard truths. Consequences for her decisions and actions, especially as we grew closer to the end, proved themselves to Elisa and I applauded her for being able to...move past them and regroup quickly. Even before she came into herself Elisa didn't just wallow, not when there was something else she could be doing. She had her moments, but then she was is still young, thrust into a terrible War that no one cared to explain to her. While the ending lends itself well to being self-contained, there are two more books and the acknowledgement that more adventures await Elisa in the closing. An important plot focal point remains unanswered and to be truthful I want to see what the new Elisa can do with her strength and new found purpose.
The Kind One Tom Epperson's "The Kind One", set in Depression-era Los Angeles of the 1930s, is a well written and fast-paced gangster tale with heart. The main character is Danny, literally and figuratively a "lost soul". Having no memory because of an unspecified accident, Danny finds himself consorting with killers and thugs and molls, and on the payroll of a psychotic crime boss. The brutality of his criminal companions is a stark contrast to Danny's humaneness and decency - he saves an abused and neglected little girl, he's chivalrous to the woman who beguiles him, the beautiful Darla, he's even loyal to his monstrous boss. The action in this book keeps our interest piqued while its nonaction - Danny's melancholy dreaminess and search of self - engage our empathy. There is an elegant symmetry to the surprise ending of this story. It's an altogether pleasurable read.
The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon I have read all of Ellen Raskin's novels and this is probably the silliest one! Although The Westing Game is my favorite book, this book was a good companion to THe Westing Game since it is a silly and funny mystery of word games. I reccomend it to anyone who is looking for a fun book that never gets slow or boring and will keep you amused!

Unforsaken Overall, UNFORSAKEN concludes a powerful series involving Irish folklore and zombies, a sweet romance, and a multi generational storyline full of breathless action and truly abhorrent villains. Sophie Littlefield continues to astound me with her poignant writing, deft blending of supernatural details, and unflinching characterizations. I am officially a fan for life.

Food and Addiction: A Comprehensive Handbook ISBN: 0199738165 | 2012 | EPUB | 496 pages | 3 MB Can certain foods hijack the brain in ways similar to drugs and alcohol, and is this effect sufficiently strong to contribute to major diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, and hence constitute a public health menace? Terms like "chocoholic" and "food addict" are part of popular lore, some popular diet books discuss the concept of addiction, and there are food addiction programs with names like Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous. Clinicians who work with patients often hear the language of addiction when individuals speak of irresistible cravings, withdrawal symptoms when starting a diet, and increasing intake of palatable foods over time. But what does science show, and how strong is the evidence that food and addiction is a real and important phenomenon? Food and Addiction: A Comprehensive Handbook brings scientific order to the issue of food and addiction, spanning multiple disciplines to create the foundation for what is a rapidly advancing field and to highlight needed advances in science and public policy. The book assembles leading scientists and policy makers from fields such as nutrition, addiction, psychology, epidemiology, and public health to explore and analyze the scientific evidence for the addictive properties of food. It provides complete and comprehensive coverage of all subjects pertinent to food and addiction, from basic background information on topics such as food intake, metabolism, and environmental risk factors for obesity, to diagnostic criteria for food addiction, the evolutionary and developmental bases of eating addictions, and behavioral and pharmacologic interventions, to the clinical, public health, and legal and policy implications of recognizing the validity of food addiction. Each chapter reviews the available science and notes needed scientific advances in the field.
Bet the Farm: How Food Stopped Being Food ISBN: 0470631929 | 2012 | EPUB | 272 pages | 506 KB A prominent food journalist follows the trail from Big Pizza to square tomatoes to exploding food prices to Wall Street, trying figure out why we can't all have healthy, delicious, affordable food In 2008, farmers grew enough to feed twice the world's population, yet more people starved than ever before—and most of them were farmers. In Bet the Farm, food writer Kaufman sets out to discover the connection between the global food system and why the food on our tables is getting less healthy and less delicious even as the the world's biggest food companies and food scientists say things are better than ever. To unravel this riddle, he moves down the supply chain like a detective solving a mystery, revealing a force at work that is larger than Monsanto, McDonalds or any of the other commonly cited culprits—and far more shocking. Kaufman's recent cover story for Harper's, "The Food Bubble," provoked controversy throughout the food world, and led to appearances on the NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, Fox Business News, Democracy Now, and Bloomberg TV, along with features on National Public Radio and the BBC World Service. Visits the front lines of the food supply system and food politics as Kaufman visits farms, food science research labs, agribusiness giants, the United Nations, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and more Explains how food has been financialized and the powerful consequences of this change, including: the Arab Spring, started over rising food prices; farmers being put out of business; food scientists rushing to make easy-to-transport, homogenized ingredients instead of delicious foods Explains how the push for sustainability in food production is more likely to make everything worse, rather than better—and how the rise of fast food is bad for us, but catastrophic for those who will never even see a McNugget or frozen pizza

“John XXIII was, in the best possible sense, a revolutionary—a Pope of modernization who kept in continuity with the church’s past, yet made even the most enlightened of his 20th century predecessors seem like voices of another age.” —Time magazine “The story of Good Pope John is always worth telling….Greg Tobin tells it very well. As we wait for better days, this story will help to keep hope alive.” —Thomas Groome, Professor of Theology and Religious Education at Boston College, author of Will There Be Faith Published in the 50th anniversary year of the historic Vatican Council II, The Good Pope by Greg Tobin is the first major biography of Pope John XXIII, a universally beloved religious leader who ushered in an era of hope and openness in the Catholic Church—and whose reforms, had they been accepted, would have enabled the church to avoid many of the major crises it faces today. Available prior to John XXIII’s likely canonization, Tobin’s The Good Pope is timely and important, offering a fascinating look at the legacy of Vatican Council II, an insightful investigation into the history of the Catholic Church, and a celebration of one of its true heroes.

Che Guevara: You Win or You Die ISBN: 0822590352 | 2012 | PDF | 88 pages | 16 MB October 9, 1967. World-renowned revolutionary Che Guevara is dead at the age of thirty-nine. The charismatic Argentinian revolutionary had been leading guerilla fighters in the jungles of Bolivia and was captured by the Bolivian army. Mario TerA?n, a sergeant in the Bolivian army, volunteered to execute the prisoner. He carried out the bloody assignment with nine point-blank shots to Guevara's body. Around the globe, reactions to the assassination were mixed. In Cuba, where Guevara had helped overthrow a brutally repressive dictatorship in 1959, more than a million people mourned openly. But in the United States and elsewhere, many business leaders and government officials
were relieved. Guevara's anti-capitalist movement sought to strip big businesses of their land and power. Hit List: An In-Depth Investigation into the Mysterious Deaths of Witnesses to the JFK Assassination English | ISBN: 1620878070 | edition 2013 | EPUB | 368 pages | 3 MB “The calculated probability that at least eighteen witnesses would die of any cause within three years of the JFK assassination was 1 in 100,000 trillion.” —Jim Marrs, New York Times bestselling author of Crossfire Richard Belzer and David Wayne are back to set the record straight after Dead Wrong; this time they’re going to uncover the truth about the many witness deaths tied to the JFK assassination. For decades, government pundits have dismissed these “coincidental” deaths, even regarding them as “myths” as “urban legends.” Like most people, Richard and David were initially unsure about what to make of these ‘coincidences’. After all, events don’t “consult the odds” prior to happening; they simply happen. Then someone comes along later and figures out
what the odds of it happening were. Some of the deaths seemed purely coincidental; heart attacks, hunting accidents. Others clearly seemed noteworthy; witnesses who did seem to know something and did seem to die mysteriously. Hit List is a fair examination of the evidence of each case, leading to (necessarily) different conclusions. The findings were absolutely staggering; as some cases were clearly linked to a “clean-up operation” after the murder of President Kennedy, while others were the result of ‘other forces’. The impeccable research and writing of Richard Belzer and David Wayne show that if the government is trying to hide anything, they’re the duo who will uncover it. 100 b/w photographs

Street Smarts: Adventures on the Road and in the Markets English | ISBN: 0307986071 | edition 2013 | EPUB | 272 pages | 2.09 MB
Wall Street legend and bestselling author Jim Rogers offers investing insights and economic, political, and social analysis, drawing on lessons and observations from his lifetime in the markets. Jim Rogers, whose entertaining accounts of his travels around the world -- studying the markets from Russia to Singapore from the ground up-- has enthralled readers, investors and Wall Street aficionados for two decades in such books as Investment Biker, Adventure Capitalist, Hot Commodities and A Bull In China . In his engaging memoir Street Smarts, Rogers offers pithy commentary from a lifetime of adventure, from his early years growing up a naïve kid in Demopolis, Alabama, to his fledgling career on Wall Street, to his cofounding the wildly successful Quantum Fund.[omit George Soros] Rogers always had a restless curiosity to experience and understand the world around him. In Street Smarts, he takes us through the highlights of his life in the financial markets, from his school days at Yale and Oxford -- where despite the fact that he didn’t have enough money to afford the appropriate pair of shoes, he coxed the crew and helped to win the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race as well as the Thames Cup, the first of his three Guiness World Records,-- to his first heady taste of Wall Street in the mid - 1960s, and his years helping to run the most successful hedge fund on Wall Street. As a result of his extraordinary success with the Quantum Fund, Rogers was able to retire at the age of thirty-seven. Since then he has taught classes in finance at Columbia University, hosted television programs, and traveled the world seeing firsthand how revolutions in Chile affect coffee prices in Seattle, and how shortages of copper in Africa affect electricity brownouts in Ohio. In the course of his new book, Rogers offers often surprising observations on how the world works – and what trends he sees in the future. He explains why Asia will be the dominant economic force in the twenty-first century – and how he and his wife and two daughters moved to Singapore to prepare his family for the coming changes.. He discusses why America and the European Union are in decline, and what we need to do to right our economy and society. The age of Wall Street, Rogers claims, when the finance industry drove 25% of America’s growth, is over. Tomorrow’s economy will be driven by those who make things – food, energy, goods and consumables. Regarded as one of the most astute investors Wall Street has ever known, Jim Rogers once again is at his acerbic and storytelling best.
Devil in the Milk: Illness, Health and the Politics of A1 and A2 Milk 2009 | ISBN: 1603581022 | English | 240 Pages | PDF | 3.05 MB This groundbreaking work is the first internationally published book to examine the link between a protein in the milk we drink and a range of serious illnesses, including heart disease, Type 1 diabetes, autism, and schizophrenia. These health problems are linked to a tiny protein fragment that is formed when we digest A1 beta-casein, a milk protein produced by many cows in the United States and northern European countries. Milk that contains A1 betacasein is commonly known as A1 milk; milk that does not is called A2. All milk was once A2, until a genetic mutation occurred some thousands of years ago in some European cattle. A2 milk remains high in herds in much of Asia, Africa, and parts of Southern Europe. A1 milk is common in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. In Devil in the Milk, Keith Woodford brings together the evidence published in more than 100 scientific papers. He examines the population studies that look at the link between consumption of A1 milk and the incidence of heart disease and Type 1 diabetes; he explains the science that underpins the A1/A2 hypothesis; and he examines the research undertaken with animals and humans. The evidence is compelling: We should be switching to A2 milk.
A2 milk from selected cows is now marketed in parts of the U.S., and it is possible to convert a herd of cows producing A1 milk to cows producing A2 milk. This is an amazing story, one that is not just about the health issues surrounding A1 milk, but also about how scientific evidence can be molded and withheld by vested interests, and how consumer choices are influenced by the interests of corporate business.

Black Hearts: One Platoon's Descent into Madness in Iraq's Triangle of Death 2011 | 464 Pages | ISBN: 0307450767 | EPUB | 4 MB This painstaking and balanced book studies the experience of one airborne platoon in Iraq’s deadly “Black Triangle,” where U.S. forces have racked up a larger number of casualties than in any other area of the country. The stress of combat on the platoon eventually led to what can be described only as a war crime, in which rape and murder overtook an entire Iraqi family. Frederick’s thorough research makes this a dense book, one not for the novice in studying the Iraq War or any other, but his compassion for all parties involved has enabled him to get an amount of cooperation from all of them that makes the book an exceptionally rich and valuable document of an aspect of the war the coverage of which is not always free from political bias or just plain sloppiness. Although not for the beginner, this is a valuable addition to any serious study of this war.

Each of the twenty five chapters covers a different species, and many depict an individual bird, each with its own personality, habits, and quirks. And each chapter is illustrated with Zickefoose's stunning watercolor paintings and drawings. Not just individual tales about the trials and triumphs of raising birds, The Bluebird Effect mixes humor, natural history, and memoir to give readers an intimate story of a life lived among wild birds.

American Idol: The Untold Story ISBN: 1401324126 | 2011 | EPUB/MOBI | 288 pages | 77 MB/15 MB The currency is fame, and it’s bigger than money, more desired than power.
Each season American Idol delivers on a promise whose epic scope is unparalleled in the annals of competition: to take an unknown dreamer from the middle of America and turn him or her into a genuine star. It has become not only the biggest show on television, but the biggest force in all of entertainment; its alumni dominate the recording charts and Broadway, win Academy Awards, and sweep up Grammys. In fact, American Idol has reshaped the very idea of celebrity. But it didn't start out that way. When the little singing contest debuted as a summer replacement on the U.S. airwaves, it was packed between reruns and low-cost filler. The promise that it would find America's next pop star produced a hearty round of guffaws from the country's media critics. Now, some ten years and millions of records later, no one is laughing. American Idol: The Untold Story chronicles the triumphs and travails, the harrowing backstage drama and the nailbiting onstage battles that built this revolutionary show. In this revealing book, veteran journalist Richard Rushfield goes deeper inside the circus than any reporter ever has. Candid interviews with Idol alumni, including Simon Fuller and Simon Cowell, shed new light on the show that changed the entertainment industry. And because Rushfield had full access to the people who created the show, starred in it, and kept it atop the pop culture pyramid, this book is the first to take Americans behind the curtain and tell what has really been happening on the world's most watched and speculated-about stage.
Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World ISBN: 1580085792 | 2005 | EPUB | 356 pages | 48 MB Mycelium Running is a manual for the mycological rescue of the planet. That’s right: growing more mushrooms may be the best thing we can do to save the environment, and in this groundbreaking text from mushroom expert Paul Stamets, you’ll find out how. The basic science goes like this: Microscopic cells called “mycelium”--the fruit of which are mushrooms--recycle carbon, nitrogen, and other essential elements as they break down plant and animal debris in the creation of rich new soil. What Stamets has discovered is that we can capitalize on mycelium’s digestive power and target it to decompose toxic wastes and pollutants (mycoremediation), catch and reduce silt from streambeds and pathogens from agricultural watersheds (mycofiltration), control insect populations (mycopesticides), and generally enhance the health of our forests and gardens (mycoforestry and myco-gardening). In this comprehensive guide, you’ll find chapters detailing each of these four exciting branches of what Stamets has coined “mycorestoration,” as well as chapters on the medicinal and nutritional properties of mushrooms, inoculation methods, log and stump culture, and species selection for various environmental purposes. Heavily referenced and beautifully illustrated, this book is destined to be a classic reference for bemushroomed generations to come.
