Where the Summer Ends: The Best Horror Stories of Karl Edward Wagner, Volume 1 I have the virtue of having known Karl. He was a wonderful writer his horror and fantasy stories, his Kane novels, his work as an editor of his company Carcosa. Alcoholism robbed us of a talent all too soon. These stories are available in other, more expensive editions long out of print. These two books are a great introduction. Of my late lamented friend, what might have been.

Walk on the Wild Side: The Best Horror Stories of Karl Edward Wagner, Volume 2 ....Though nothing quite comes up to the level of his great short story 'Sticks', there are some memorable moments here. Wagner's gift for jolting you completely with a seemingly mundane element at the haiku-like ending of many of his stories and the fathomless horror that breaks across in the tedium of everyday life are on display throughout. Particularly notable are the high school reunion story 'Passages', the inexorable metamorphosis of 'Lacunae', and the title story 'Walk On the Wild Side.' Well worth owning.

Unusual Uses for Olive Oil: A Professor Dr von Igelfeld Entertainment Novel It is hilarious to read this book.Von Igelfeld's genius for getting himself in trouble is in some ways similar to that of the heroes of silent movies, although Von Igelfeld does it through talking. At times I'm reminded of innocents abroad like Buster Keaton and Peter Sellers in the "Pink Panther" series. You will find yourself laughing out loud, and I have deliberately tried to keep describing the plot details in a way that would spoil the fun.

Valcour- Enchanted by a Demon Jake reminds me a bit of Sam Winchester in the "Supernatural" TV series. Since I'm a huge fan of the show, this book was a pleasant surprise. Libby Sparks is a promising up and coming novelist and I'm quite looking forward to part two in the series.

This Time Next Door This is a sister book to "Love Handles". Really enjoyed both and hope there will be more books for this series.

The Wolves of the North: Warrior of Rome 5 Anyway, I much preferred this one (I found Caspian Gates a bit "tepid"). It also seems that Harry Sidebottom has decided to treat us to a tour of the Roman Empire's neighbors and borders in the 3rd century AD since book 6 will be called the Amber Road, coming after the Persians, the Caucasus, the Goths and the nomads North of the Black Sea. Another treat in preparation...

The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards His writing is fantastic! It's read-aloud, eminently quotable, just a pleasure to absorb. Everything about this novel is stylish, stylized, and sophisticated. It's also very funny. It's gonzo, romantic, clever, and the sort of book to remind readers and writers both why they do what they do. In short, this is an exhilarating debut novel. My instincts were right on this time. Score one for me.

The Source (The Mountain State Vampire Series) I just finished reading this book, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It was nice to see someone concentrating on West Virginia, and focusing on the culture. I would most definitely recommend it to my friends to read.

The Dark Thorn I should preface that I'm a very picky reader. I don't like it when authors clutter the plot and story with useless details that are unrelated to the story. In contrast, Shawn Speakman has done an amazing job crafting this story of a struggling knight as he defends the world against a long standing threat. Speakman has demonstrated an amazing ability as an author and has clearly shown that has earned the right to stand alongside other famous authors such as George R.R. Martin, Terry Brooks, and Anne McCaffery.

The Informer Sabotage Group BB is a resistance unit fighting the Hipo and the Gestapo.

The Green Ticket The writing is great. I love how March writes dialogue that is entertaining - giving us enough information without making the story seem way too detail. I also loved that Alex has such wonderful friendships, although, at times, I questioned their maturity. Still, it is obvious just how much growing and maturing Alex needs to do in this job and I loved that we could follow this progression throughout the storyline.

The Granny The three works are as close to faultless storytelling as I have read, and I hope I can look forward to many more books by this Author. He will have a tremendous challenge to repeat this success, but as he has done it three times in succession, waiting for additional novels should not be a wait in vain.

The Chisellers This amazing writer is two for two, and now it remains to be seen if he has the final third of the hat trick within him. For this middle installment is as good as number one, so he has nothing to improve upon, as the first two were uniformly tremendous.

The Cat Sitter's Pajamas: A Dixie Hemingway Mystery The author Blaize Clement died in July of 2011. I read the article in the Sarasota paper. She , with her sons help, completed 2 more books in the Dixie Hemingway series prior to her death from cancer. They will be published. It also said that her son, John, has signed with St. Martin's Minotaur to do at least two more books in the series.

Joe Vampire This book was highly entertaining. Unpretentious and fun, and the "blog format" was an interesting change of pace. I noticed a couple spelling errors, but strangely was able to forgive them, as I felt like I was reading an actual blog, not a book. If you are squeamish about vulgarity or poop, don't read this book, but for everyone else, get to reading. Word of caution- don't try to read this somewhere you'll need to be quiet- I laughed out loud many, many times.

In the Shadow of Sadd In the Shadow of Sadd is a good, gripping read. It follows overlapping events from four different perspectives, and has you the reader collecting the dots along the way. It flows nicely from one viewpoint to the next (I never would have guessed there were different authors if it wasn't mentioned) and the plot comes full circle with a surprise at the end. Worth a read.

Losing Me, Finding You (A New Adult Biker Erotic Romance) Loved Austin and Amy! Austin is the perfect bad boy biker, tattoos and piercings and all that goodness. Amy is the perfect southern preachers daughter. I do feel that Amy did not get justice on her parents yet, so hopefully there is more books to come.

Metro It really gave a thrill - and it had several layers. It stayed with me for some time, and I cannot take the Metro without looking around!

Spiders from the Shadows: Wrath and Righteousness: Episode Nine Great adventure, can't wait for book ten. Probably more likely to happen than we think. Pick up the books and enjoy.

Sisters This book was good. It kept me interested, but I thought some of her other books were better. Still all in all, it was a good read. Love Patricia MacDonald's books.I plan to read all the ones I've missed.

Jamie's had a hard life. Just escaping an abusive boyfriend, she's kidnapped and thrown into a room with a dangerous man who is more than happy to kill her.

Pow!

The second story line is a trip. For the most part, it's a narration populated with ghosts, phantoms, and spirits. Yet it also intersects with what most would consider reality 101. It includes narration of a meat festival that could have been penned by Gabriel Marquez. And, it intersects at the end with the more down-to-earth previously mentioned narrative when...I did it again.

Not a Chance (Sweet Nothings) (Volume 1) Small-town heiress, Arden Butler, is as pragmatic and rational as they come. Until he gets to know her, and suddenly wants so much more. After five days snowbound together, Arden and Travis find themselves forever changed.

The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All Over the course of two award-winning collections and a critically acclaimed novel, The Croning, Laird Barron has arisen as one of the strongest and most original literary voices in modern horror and the dark fantastic. Melding supernatural horror with hardboiled noir, espionage, and a scientific backbone, Barron’s stories have garnered critical acclaim and have been reprinted in numerous year’s best anthologies and nominated for multiple awards, including the Crawford, International Horror Guild, Shirley Jackson, Theodore Sturgeon, and World Fantasy awards.

Strings (Hard Rock Harlots) STRINGS is not suitable for slut shamers, uptight stone throwers, Holier-Than-Thou prudes, humorless virgins, persons with chronic neck or back pain, pearl-clutching bitties, those who disparage crude humor or vulgarity in their many forms, closed-minded people with sticks up their asses, or anyone under the age of 18. The vile, base language and shocking, unholy sexual acts contained herein are not condoned by anyone with a lick of sense and should certainly not be reproduced without proper training and protection.

The Blue Zone From the very beginning the suspense pulls you in. Every chapter has a surprise. I want to read more from this author.

The Bloody Tower "The Bloody Tower" was a quick and easy read from the very first page. This was due entirely to the author's energetic and effervescent prose style, and the fact that she managed to maintain and light touch in spite of the dark overtones the storyline sometimes decreed. I particularly enjoyed all the colourful and atmospheric descriptions of the Tower of London shrouded in fog. It was only two paragraphs long, but it set the tone and was completely memorable. I also enjoyed the all the wonderful red herring suspects that the author had thoughtfully provided for me as well as interesting plot twists. Best of all though, was observing how Daisy and Alec interacted with each other, assisting and respecting each other's strengths, and so working together to catch another killer. All in all a very enjoyable and absorbing read.

The Blood That Bonds: Part 1 of the II AM Trilogy As I started reading this book, it started out on the sad and low life that Two was living. The it started getting better. It was similar to other Paranormal books. But as the story progressed, it broke away from the usual. The writing is such that you know the characters. You root for the good guys vs the bad guys even though the odds are against them.

I laughed and I cried, right to the end and I wanted more! Please, please tell me that there is another book coming and that it will be coming out soon!

The Blood of Flowers The Blood of Flowers is a story of love, loss, learning and sacrifice. The young girl often makes rash, immature decisions and takes extreme risks something unusual in a Muslim girl in 17th Century Persia. Some of these risks pay dividends, while others bring great misery. This book is also a coming of age story as the young girl moves to womanhood and especially, discovers the pleasures of the flesh. Amirrezvani wants her readers to see the true beauty of Iran. She paints a vivid picture of the beautiful Isfahan with her river, her bridges, her mosques, her gardens, her bazaar and her hammams. She also details the food, dress and customs of the day. But the author saves her most descriptive writing for the carpets! She provides a fascinating look at how the carpets are planned, sketched out, how the wools and silks are selected, how they're knotted, etc. They're not just floor coverings, but wall hangings, furniture and most of all, works of art. A carpet is put together knot by knot and row by row to create a true treasure. Amirrezvani has also created a true Persian treasure, word by word, line by line and story by story.

The Blood Red Indian Summer: A Berger and Mitry Mystery This book exceeded my expectations. This book harkens back to the first few in the series, the mystery was truly a mystery to me, and it was a decent length. Mitch and Des were wonderful, the banter was great, we meet new characters (who are surprisingly likeable for being who they are), and get to know an old character better, which was a delight. I just can't really say enough on how much I enjoyed this. I won't spoil anything but will say that it's renewed my love for this series, not that it was waning, but he's put new life into the series.

The Blood of Alexandria Troubles in Egypt...how actual. But the troubles of Aelric are with Emperor Heraclius' plans of land reallocations, which Aelric is supposed to enforce to less than enthusiastic landowners. From then all hell breaks loose, among Old Faith conspirators, shifty Viceroys, unreliable guides, mob revolts and an old rival, Priscus, urging Aelric to find a most precious relic of embarrassing nature. From the quarters of Alexandria to the depth of the desert, the adventures of the decidedly skeptic Aelric among Ortodox, heretics and followers of ancient cults are exhilarating. Highly recommended!

The Blasphemer The chapters about World War I and the character of Andrew Kennedy are refreshing topics for examination, a war not much discussed or the terrible cost in lives of those who fought for their countries. And in a family where military honor carries significant weight, as in the Kennedy's, Andrew Kennedy hides a dark secret, his traumatic experience lost to time and memory. Farndale connects past and present through his two protagonists, critical decisions made under duress and the significance of men's religious beliefs, or lack of, an obscure landscape where the boundaries of human nature are expanded and the rigidity of ideology demolished by circumstance, the murky territory between left to personal interpretation.

The Blade Itself "The Blade Itself" is lean, well-plotted, and convincingly authentic in its depiction of the criminal underbelly on Chicago's South Side. Danny Carter, reformed thief, comes face to face with his dark past when Evan, his volatile former partner, is paroled from a prison sentence and shows up expecting payback after taking the fall for his former partner. When Danny turns him down, Evan raises the stakes, cornering Danny into a situation so dire that kidnapping his boss's son seems like the only viable course. Novels that rely on this sort of premise are incredibly difficult to pull off, as they almost always employ strained logic to convince the reader that there are no easier ways out. Sakey not only avoids clunky turns in the plot but also maintains a blistering pace, getting in late and out early on each chapter, yet finds opportunities to develop a believable hero in Danny and a worthy villain in Evan.

The Black Sun The Black Sun provides everything readers crave in a historical mystery: entertainment, suspense, a vicarious trip to previously unexplored venues and, finally, the enjoyment of experiencing a writers' magnificent "spin" on historical events. Even if you are not a fan of thrillers that relate to events and occurrences circa WWII, this book will make you one. While other authors may have already explored some of the subjects put forth in this endeavor (The Hungarian Gold Train, the strange goings-on by the SS at Wewelsburg Castle, the disappearance of The Amber Room), Twining manages to take all of these events and weave them together into a finely wrought modern day tale filled with tension and intrigue. More anti-hero than hero, Tom Kirk is an ex- CIA agent and ex-art thief is a slightly ambiguous character whose previous life has left him with a rather jaded perception of his fellow man. Kirk first made an appearance in Twinings' previous novel The Double Eagle. He is a flawed but likeable character who seems to have a talent for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Currently living in London, he is "recruited" by MI6 to aid them in finding the culprit responsible for three vicious murders, the theft of an Enigma machine and some seemingly worthless canvases painted in the 1940's by a relatively unknown Jewish artist.

Tom and his cohorts are swept up in this adventure which in addition to providing us with a stimulating read also leads us to explore the fascinating mindset of the Nazis who believed that art was a valuable and powerful weapon in reshaping Europe's cultural heritage to conform to their Aryan ideals.

The Big Book of Gross Stuff The Big Book of Gross Stuff is not only fun, but it's packed with stealth science. Any kid who reads the book will come out the other end a lot smarter and will have a great time doing it. Bart King is a wonderful writer with an uncanny ability to appeal to young readers.

The Black Cloud "The Black Cloud." Hoyle is a terrific writer and brings to bear his expertise as a scientist in producing a novel that is engrossing, with the dialogue delightfully flavored with his subtle British sense of humor. I particulary enjoy the interaction between the dignified 'Astronomer Royal' and the chief character and maverick & rather unstable Professor Kingsly. The book begins with a description of a cold wintry January morning on the prime meridian in England, with the natives huddled around their fireplaces moaning about the weather, and quickly moves to Mt. Palomar above the California orange groves, where an underpaid Norwegian grad assistant finds that certain photographic plates (didn't have CDC's back then) taken of the Orion region of the sky show that an entire circle of stars is blinking on and off when compared with the plate taken somewhat earlier….a condition that shouldn't exist…and the action starts from there….of course the culprit is the "Black Cloud" heading straight for the solar system. I'm a fan of Heinlein, Asimov, Arthur C. Clark, et. al…but I gotta say this is my number one favorite of all time. Anybody who likes sci-fi within the realm of what actually could happen as told by a writer grounded in science…and who's got a flare for SETI will love this book. And the way he writes, I find myself visualizing being right there on the scene., whether at Mt. Palomar, Pasadena, or Nortonstowe out in the English countryside (where they all end up). Always felt it was too bad Hoyle wasn't a more prolific writer of novels....

The Big Four: A Hercule Poirot Mystery This book does not reflect Ms. Christie'susual style. In fact, I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as her other Poirot novels, so if any of you haven't read Agatha Christie books before, DO NOT start with this one. Get Five Little Pigs instead.

The Better Part of Darkness (Charlie Madigan, Book 1) The Better Part of Darkness, told from Charlie Madigan's point of view, was an exciting, fast-paced read for me. I finish this book in nearly one sitting. What kept me glued to the pages was how clues were dropped at just the right place, and the mystery just kept building. The pace of was perfect. The unique world and atmosphere of this book had the right combination of dark and gritty paranormal aspects. The biggest attention grabber for me was the colorful personalities of the characters. From Hank, Charlie's gorgeous off-world partner to Byrn, her eclectic sister who runs a herb shop in the Underground. Charlie, mother of a pre-teen, is a gusty heroine, who has heart. But she's tough as nails when the situation calls for it and it's called for many times. She presents everyone with a tough exterior and acts like she can handle whatever comes her way on her own, but on the inside she is always questioning herself. I could see Charlie as a real person. The thing that can make a book really pop for me is when the bad guys are truly evil and vile. You get that kind of scary here. So when your reading a scene with the bad guys, your on the edge of your seat with worry and dread. More than once I was wondering how Charlie was going to save herself. The ending left me feeling very satisfied but full of anticipation for the next book. This was a story that left me thinking about it long after I finished reading it.

The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove The character development in this story, I thought was very good. The interactions between Natalie and the other characters felt very real to me. Kate did an amazing job drawing her readers in. I really felt as if I was there with Natalie, watching everything unfold. Through out the story, we begin to learn more and more about Natalie and her past, which helps the reader, understand Natalie more. Natalie is also very manipulative. Kate did a great job in creating a character like Natalie that is bitchy and manipulative, but one that the reader also still likes and can get behind.

The Betrayal of Maggie Blair All the characters in The Betrayal Of Maggie Blair gave the story much flavor. The villains, the heroes, the romantics, the devout, the liars, the betrayed, the power-hungry - it was hard to let everyone go at the end. Each had a role to play in this drama, and they played it extremely well. No one was a cookie-cutter character, having both qualities to redeem and damn them. Even the villains tugged at my sympathies, although they certainly deserved their unfortunate end as time went on. If you enjoyed The Witch Of Blackbird Pond, The Crucible, or falling into the time period where they chased after witches, I trust you will find The Betrayal Of Maggie Blair just as magical!

The Bells I loved this brilliant tour de force and I devoured it with relish. I really hated to put it down. It's been a long time since I was as hooked on cliff-hangers as I was between chapters in 'The Bells'. I adore opera (ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE in particular) and opera and voice play a huge role in the telling of this story. But the reader need not be an opera aficionado or a classical music buff to appreciate this great novel. If you love to read a well-told historical fiction, poetic in language and sensitive in manner, in which unforgettable characters appear in authentic settings, in which the action excites and intrigues, then 'The Bells' is for you.

The Beginning of After Overall, I did like it, but the slow plot and the lack of co-protag bothered me quite some. Readers who like contemporary will enjoy this a lot, but those craving some romance, be warned, you must be patient with this story. It will be satisfying after all the torture though.

The Agency 2: The Body at the Tower The Body at the Tower is a fun Victorian mystery with a clever heroine and a lovely dash of romance. This book could be read as a standalone, but I would highly recommend reading the A Spy in the House first. Fans of historical mysteries or historical romances should definitely pick up this series. It is a quick and accessible read with enjoyable

characters, so even readers who aren't generally drawn to historical novels should give this series a try. I look forward to reading the third Agency book, The Traitor and the Tunnel.

The Book of Air and Shadows The novel is made up of three story lines that converge as the story develops. Richard Bracegirdle, the letter writer from the 16th century Jake Mishkin an Intellectual Property Lawyer and Albert Crosetti an aspiring filmmaker making a living working for an antiquarian bookshop. The author uses the written word eloquently to bring three distinct characters to life in such a way that you get absolutely and completely absorbed in the narrative. The novel does not totally focus on the thrill of the chase to find the illusive manuscript, but incorporates the (dysfunctional) lives and loves of the main characters to give a rounded whole. This is a literary detective story, where you will find it difficult to anticipate where the narrative will take you next, with the only way forward to turn the pages quickly to the next and the next. I think the novel holds something for everyone, even if you don't know anything about Shakespeare or books. I have to admit that this book is one of the best I have read so far this year and will definitely anticipate the next book of this author.

The Book of Lies Would I recommend? Yes, but with a few hesitations. I would tell you to read the P.S. part of the book first. I find that the insights and interviews with the author actually enrich the reading experience. I should go with my gut instinct and do it every time before diving into the story. After I read the P.S. section light bulbs starting going off in my head!! I felt that the story moved a bit slow for me, but overall I'm glad that I stuck with it because I ended up learning quite a bit about Guernsey and the role it and those that lived there played in WWII.

The Boy in the Suitcase The cast of characters includes rich and poor, thugs and do-gooders, nosy neighbors and frightened kids caught in adult dramas. It took me a while to figure out who was who. The plot skips around between countries and characters. But I finally got my bearings and enjoyed the ride. The interesting personality of Nina the nurse is slow to emerge, but I liked her when I got to know her. Certainly Nina is a handy person to have around when fists fly and guns go off. She can staunch the flow of blood and dress the wounds. I look forward to seeing her talents at work in the next book in the series! Lene Kaaberbol and Agnete Friis are a new team in the thriller genre and starting out strong. They tell a gripping and original story.

The Bottoms Harry and Tom are excellently portrayed and could have been the children of Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird." In fact, Scout Finch and tomboy, Tom Craine could have been twins, they are so much alike. Both stories have negro characters who are wrongly accused and both stories have heroic characters and are masterpieces of literature.

The Break-Up Diet: A Memoir

What a superb piece of Chick Lit! In this genre, The Break-Up Diet merits 5 stars. The reason I know that this book is dynamite Chick Lit is that when I reached the middle, I sat in a chair and read the rest, non-stop. Annette Fix's realistic dialogue and intense hunt for The Perfect Man just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. And, I love happy endings, which the Break-Up Diet served up perfectly. The Break-Up Diet formula is simple: love lost, finding love, love found the process is Painful. This memoir reminded me of the movie, "Something's Gotta Give," with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson. When Jack dumps Diane, who has fallen in love with him, she wails and cries and sobs loudly, constantly, copiously and dramatically, while writing a terrific book and screen play all about the heartbreak. Talk about making lemonade out of a lemon, here it is in spades.

The Breaking The Skinners books are definately one of my top 3 all time Urban Fantasy reads...if you like your books with more action/suspense than romance this series is for you.... The world created in this series just keeps getting better with each chapter. Im sad to see that the finale will be book 6 (the next release), but maybe we will see some spinoff books or something.

The Burden of Proof I really enjoyed this book, but people looking for a typical terse, thrilling courtroom or legal thriller may find that this one is deeper than what is typical for this genre. This book is more like a novel with very developed, deep characters, who have very complicated issues, all of which are essential to the story. It's a novel about the lead character, Sandy Stern, who happens to be a lawyer, and who

does get entangled in a legal mess as the result of his wife's suicide, but the legal tangle and it's solution is not really the point. The major theme of the novel seems to be that appearances are deceiving, that people within the same family often work at cross purposes, and that even what seems to be direct communication can be totally misinterpreted. Sandy Stern is deceptive and deceiving, and so are all his family, friends and aquaintances. As he uncovers secret after secret he realizes how his life and everyone in it is largely a reflection of his own behavior. Turow is a much better and deeper writer than others in the "legal thriller" genre he's lumped in with.

The Caretaker of Lorne Field Beneath Lorne Field are horrific monsters called Aukowies that make themselves manifest as innocent-looking weeds. If they aren't culled daily, Aukowies will emerge and terrorize the pastoral New England village. Billed as "a fantasy wrapped in a horror story inside a mystery," the palpable horror could happen with any aspect of society. Lorne Field and the neighboring town are a microcosm of that society. In this burg, Steven King Street intersects with Elm Street's worst nightmare.

Flat Spin Cordell Logan left behind the shadowy world of black ops for a more sedate life as a flight instructor in California. When his ex-wife comes to ask him to look into her husband's mysterious murder, Logan is a bit conflicted. The murdered man is both an ex-compatriot from Logan's black ops days and the man responsible for Logan's wife becoming his ex-wife.

Faster We Burn While Faster We Burn is the second book in the Rise and Fall series, it's not entirely necessary to read Deeper We Fall to understand what's going on. It's more satisfying for the reader to know the dynamics of the group of characters beforehand, especially since Lottie and Zan are in Faster We Burn too, but it's not a necessity to follow Katie and Stryker's story.

Ember X (Death Collectors) (Volume 1) Recommended for readers 17+ due to sexual situations and language. For nineteen-year-old Ember, life has always been about death. Daughter of Fire: Daughters of Alba, Book 2 Ruairi is a young apprentice smith with a shameful past: one he is trying to put behind him. But when two volatile natures collide, will Eithne and Ruairi fight for their love, or tear their lives apart in the process?

Countdown The story is written in the First Person. Readers follow Kira the entire time. The author did a good job of slowly informing me, as the reader, about Kira's background and later about Rogan's. I found some parts very predictable and others had unexpected twists. The story has a light flavor of the science fiction movie "The Running Man". But do not worry, the resemblance is minor. I only mention it because if you have seen the old movie, chances are it will keep popping into your head.

Baby for the Billionaire Day Leclaire is a USA Today Bestselling author of more than 60 novels. Her witty, passionate, warmhearted stories have earned her an impressive 10 RITA nominations, Romance Writers of America's highest writing award.

Of all the men she's come across, only he has been able or willing to see her for the beauty she is. Three A.M. Three A.M. opens as an atmospheric noir thriller and turns slowly dystopian. Tom Vale is a classic P.I. in a fog-bound city that no one ever leaves. He's a hard-bitten, 30-something drunk who has nearly let go of his happy memories of the long-distant past. It's been fifteen years since a grisly pandemic stole his family and friends, leaving him desolate and alone. When a clumsily seductive young thing named Rebecca shows up at his favorite bar and tries to convince him to find the person who committed the murder her lover has been jailed for, Vale is smitten, but still jaded enough to smell a rat.

The Temple of Gold Temple Of Gold is wonderully written. It is realistic and moving. If it lacks something in the eloquence department, it is because Raymond is telling the story...not Zock. I'm afraid I've lost the thread somewhere in this review...just read the book. You'll be very glad that you did. Teen-angst isn't usually this edible in literature.

W.A.R.P. Book 1 The Reluctant Assassin Riley, a teen orphan boy living in Victorian London, has had the misfortune of being apprenticed to Albert Garrick, an illusionist who has fallen on difficult times and now uses his unique conjuring skills to gain access to victims' dwellings. On one such escapade, Garrick brings his reluctant apprentice along and urges him to commit his first killing. Riley is

saved from having to commit the grisly act when the intended victim turns out to be a scientist from the future, part of the FBI's Witness Anonymous Relocation Program (WARP) Riley is unwittingly transported via wormhole to modern day London, followed closely by Garrick.

The Prophecy (The Guardians) (Volume 3) I believe this book is the best yet in the series! Gabe is grown and much different from before. Things have definitely changed in his life and as we learn about and grow to love a new character, things are getting more dangerous. There is a wedding, but whose is it? You have to read to find out! I can't wait for the next book.

The Obituary Writer Rarely do I read a book with alternating narrators where I enjoy and relate to each narrator equally. Often I am skimming one person's narration while becoming totally absorbed in another character's. Not so with the Obituary Writer. I enjoyed both Vivien and Claire's stories. The ending Hood has crafted for The Obituary Writer leaves readers a bit of ambiguity, at least in my mind. I know how I feel this story ends, yet I would be curious what conclusions other readers have drawn. The Obituary Writer, Hood's third novel, is sure to add to her growing number of fans.

The Game This is one of those books I'd like to see made into a movie. I swear it's got one of those plots that you can absolutely see was made for the big screen. It's unique and definitely worth the read. If you haven't checked it out, you should. I need a paperback copy of this book for sure!

The Forever Knight: A Novel of the Bronze Knight The Forever Knight was a wonderful fantasy novel that I thoroughly enjoyed being sucked into. Lukien and his quest was a great adventure to read, and I will definitely be going back to read the first books in the series. I think anyone who enjoys fantasy, mythology, or just a good story will like The Forever Knight , too.

The Evanescence (Fallen Soul Series, #2) Great ending to a great story!!! My only issue is that the series has come to an end!!! I've enjoyed Gemma and Alex's journey and I'm happy that they ended up together after resetting everything...

The Chalice If you enjoy well-written, engaging historical suspense, I highly recommend THE CHALICE. It can be read alone or after reading THE CROWN, though I suggest diving into both in succession.

The Dangerous Edge of Things: A Tai Randolph Mystery The plot is clever, the main character is complex and well realized, but most importantly this is one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. Tai Randolph's irreverent thoughts and observations will keep you chuckling though the most stressful of police interrogations.

There are two major weakness of this novel however. First are the occult rituals. They just felt cheap. When in doubt, let's throw in some mumbling rituals. Rather than allow this grey shadow world between real and unreal to simply exist, Greatshell fell back on the mundane. The ending was also weak. It just kept going and going and never hit that intense peak of fear I was expecting. It was an entertaining if not entirely compelling read.

Taken I've read most of Julia Sykes books on Amazon. Every time she has something new, I immediately download it. I've read both Dark Grove Plantation books and enjoyed this one a bit more than the first. The first one was more of an introduction and was a bit too short, whereas this one had a bit more of a storyline. Each one of these individual books focuses on a couple and brings back the previous couples briefly. I'm looking forward to read the next one in this series and any of her books she may have coming out.

Taken (Erin Bowman) I really enjoyed the story. It had it's surprises, heartbreaks, action, suspense and love but it also had it's own unique aspect on everything. The plot alone is nothing I've ever read and it really makes you feel terrible for the people of Claysoot. This is a definite buy for people looking for something new involving dystopia and sci-fi.

Stealer of Flesh Fantasy in the tradition of Moorcock, Leiber and Howard. If you are looking for pages detailing the doily styles of dead empires and the current (world building) fashions in lady's dresses, this probably isn't your cup of tea. If you are looking for fast-paced, doom-laden, sword and sorcery action in a vibrant world with hints of a haunted past, this is a pint for you. A thick, dark brew that satisfies. Simply put, William King delivers!

Shattered Rose (Winsor Series) (Volume 1) This is a wonderful story of a girl who, through love and grace, is able to discover her true beauty within. From start to finish, this book keeps you captivated. The real life problem of an eating disorder is weaved flawlessly into the storyline. I was so drawn in by the characters and dialogue, I felt I personally knew them. A must read!

Sidney Sheldon's The Tides of Memory This book was pure Sidney Sheldon intriquing plot, well developed characterizations, and some surprises. I enjoyed the book and especially the evolution of Alexia. All in all, a book which was difficult to put down.

Shallow Breath Shallow Breath is the first book I have read by Australian author Sara Foster. It's an intriguing and compelling story about a family trying to reconnect after an incident nearly two years ago that left Desi Priest, a mother, sister and daughter, in jail. The book opens with Desi getting out of jail and returning to the area where she hopes to reconnect with her family. Desi's past means it will not be as straightforward as it seems.

Relax, You're Already Home: Everyday Taoist Habits for a Richer Life Published: 2004-12-16 | ISBN: 1585423661 | PDF | 208 pages | 16 MB Simple ways to a fuller and more vibrant existence, drawn from the Taoist tradition and shaped to fit our modern lives. Relax, You’re Already Home explores how we can enrich our lives in modern America by incorporating simple habits discovered in the Taoist tradition. We don't have to dramatically reshape our lives or perform time-consuming rituals like meditation, kung fu, or breathing practices. Dr. Raymond Barnett instead shows how we can focus on basic daily Taoist habits through activities like going to the park, gardening, or enjoying a cup of tea. He even helps us create our own rituals around holidays, saints, historical figures or events, or anything else that resonates with us. This warm and accessible book is ideal for anyone whose life seems too fast and complicated, as well as for those who are interested in Eastern religions but don’t have the time or inclination to take up esoteric practices. Complete with “interactives” that suggest exercises and probing questions, Relax, You're Already Home is a perfect primer for Taoism and a philosophy in its own right.

Demystifiying Anorexia Nervosa: An Optimistic Guide to Understanding and Healing Published: 2004-04-15 | ISBN: 0195133382 | PDF | 192 pages | 3 MB Emotionally and physically devastating, anorexia nervosa is the third most common chronic illness in teenage girls, striking one in every two hundred (boys only make up 10% of all cases). And while there are a plethora of books on the subject, most are either personal accounts of recovery or attempts to explain the disease from only one perspective, be it psychoanalytic, behavioral, cultural, or biological. Now, in this much-needed resource, Dr. Alexander Lucas draws on 40 years of experience, mostly at the Mayo Clinic, to offer clear guidance and authoritative advice on how to overcome anorexia nervosa. Based on his own unique research with thousands of patients, and striking a careful balance between psychological, cultural, and biological

approaches, Dr. Lucas demystifies this seemingly irrational disease and guides parents through the harrowing process of recovery. The book defines anorexia, illustrates how it can evolve and how common it really is, and outlines every part of the treatment process, from the early warning signs that parents should watch out for, to the initial evaluation, to specific treatment plans. Dr. Lucas emphasizes the patient's role in defining the healing process, with the support of the family and medical team. Throughout the book, he counsels optimism, stressing that in spite of the destructive power of the disease, most who suffer from anorexia nervosa fully recover and are able to live normal, healthy, and productive lives. For anyone seeking level-headed, medically sound, and comprehensive guidance on the most effective treatments for this life-threatening disorder, Demystifying Anorexia Nervosa offers a wealth of reliable, reassuring information.

Jesus Drank, Judas Repented and God Divorced His Bride Published: 2011-06-03 | ISBN: 1600052010 | PDF | 146 pages | 3 MB Jesus Drank, Judas Repented and God Divorced His Bride is a positive, Christian non-fiction book regarding: The use of alcoholic beverages then and now The repentance of Judas Iscariot God's divorce Divorce in the modern world The untold Bible story of David and the princess This book forces you to re-evaluate your understanding of the bible, re-look at the passages and re-consider their meaning. Examples of common biblical knowledge challenges: Ask anybody how many animals of each kind Noah took on the ark and they'll probably say two. However, God told Noah to take fourteen of most. Yes, there were fourteen reindeer on the ark! The prophet Ezra blessed a divorce and proclaimed that the men should "be of good courage, and do it." Ezra 10: 3-5. God divorced Israel (Isaiah 50:1.) Now please, make no mistake, this book isn't pro-divorce or pro-drunkenness. Rather, it was written to provide bible based hope, no matter your current station in life and in spite of all of your failures, past, present and future. God's grace has you covered! Regarding forgiveness, Mathew 27:3 clearly states that Judas (a.) repented, (b.) confessed his sin publicly and (c.) gave the money back. So, with Christ standing in earshot of this confession, two questions arise regarding Judas: Would Christ forgive Judas? Did Christ forgive him? When it comes to real-life issues, many people are unsure and/or unaware of the simplistic guidance the bible offers. Why? Perhaps the subjects are too controversial to talk about in a church setting. Can you imagine the stir these road side church reader boards would cause? Sundays Sermon: God Divorced His Bride Sundays Sermon: Judas Repented Sundays Sermon: Jesus Drank Steve Brown will go out on a limb and say that most pastors would be in jeopardy of job termination if they wrote a sermon of this nature, and then posted the title, on Monday morning, on the reader board out in front of the church. Why is this book different? Using solid Biblical references, this book seeks to stir up heightened interest in what the Bible says by questioning even the most primary, and most popular biblical teachings. The message in many religious books is often "sugar coated" and non-controversial. But, the Bible isn't. Neither is Jesus Drank, Judas Repented and God Divorced His Bride. Comments on Jesus Drank, Judas Repented and God Divorced His Bride by the author, Steve Brown Why did you write this book? Since I was a child I've been taught many things from the Bible that weren't true. For example, most people think Noah took two of all the animals on the ark, however it was fourteen of most (Genesis 7:2.) Granted, the number of animals on the ark isn't that important, but the teaching on divorce is important. As I searched through the Bible, I realized that flawed teaching on many important life subjects is widespread throughout the Christian world. With 5,000 hours of personal research involved I am confident arguing the accuracy of Jesus Drank, Judas Repented and God Divorced His Bride. What will the reader walk away with after reading the book? Readers leave with a heightened interest in the scriptures. In the end, readers are reminded about the importance or forgiving others. The chapter on Judas may be the greatest example of forgiveness in all of scripture and this book lays a solid argument in Judass corner and in the corner of every other sinner alive. This is a book filled with evidence that must be reckoned with.

Condemned: Inside the Sing Sing Death House English | 2000-01-01 | ISBN: 0814715966 | 166 pages | PDF | 4 MB In the annals of American criminal justice, two prisons stand out as icons of institutionalized brutality and deprivation: Alcatraz and Sing Sing. In the 70 odd years before 1963, when the death sentence was declared unconstitutional in New York, Sing Sing was the site of almost one-half of the 1,353 executions carried out in the state. More people were executed at Sing Sing than at any other American prison, yet Sing Sing's death house was, to a remarkable extent, one of the most closed, secret and mythologized places in modern America. In this remarkable book, based on recently revealed archival materials, Scott Christianson takes us on a disturbing and poignant tour of Sing Sing's legendary death house, and introduces us to those whose lives Sing Sing claimed. Within the dusty files were mug shots of each newly arrived prisoner, most still wearing the out-to-court clothes they had on earlier that day when they learned their verdict and were sentenced to death. It is these sometimes bewildered, sometimes defiant, faces that fill the pages of Condemned, along with the documents of their last months at Sing Sing. The reader follows prisoners from their introduction to the rules of Sing Sing, through their contact with guards and psychiatrists, their pleas for clemency, escape attempts, resistance, and their final letters and messages before being put to death. We meet the mother of five accused of killing her husband, the two young Chinese men accused of a murder during a robbery and the drifter who doesn't remember killing at all. While the majority of inmates are everyday people, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were also executed here, as were the major figures in the infamous Murder Inc., forerunner of the American mafia. Page upon page, Condemned leaves an indelible impression of humanity and suffering.

How to Work for an Idiot, Revised and Expanded with More Idiots, More Insanity, and More Incompetency: Survive and Thrive Without Killing Your Boss ISBN: 160163191X | 2011 | EPUB | 288 pages | 2 MB "Anyone who has to work should read How to Work for an Idiot." --USA Today "There is no question that How to Work for an Idiot is a subversive book. People will pick it up expecting a tasty blend of commiseration and advice. They will put it down thinking, to paraphrase the famous line from the cartoon character Pogo, 'We have met the idiot, and he is us.' " --The New York Times "Dr. Hoover recommends admitting that you are 'powerless' over the jerks in your life. Otherwise, 'harboring all that resentment is like drinking a cup of poison and waiting for the jerk to die.' " --The Wall Street Journal "How to Work for an Idiot contains a lot of humor, with plenty of good information as well. --Campbell Brown, Weekend Today "Dr. John's How to Work for an Idiot is very funny stuff, with some stinging jabs in there." --Neil Cavuto, Fox News "...an irreverent and realistic look at what people must deal with every day at work." --CNNfn "As amusing as his vignettes may be, the proffered advice is pretty sound and includes solid steps for coping and surviving a daily dose of determined and authoritative stupidity without committing any capital crimes." --The Miami Herald Was it a typo when the CEO mandated that the organization "institutionalize incompetents"? If not, how did the company wind up institutionalizing incompetence instead? How to Work for an Idiot is still the confessions of a recovering Idiot Boss. After decades of writing and consulting, Dr. Hoover finally realized that many of the people he kept trying to "energize" and "enlighten" were, well, idiots. More importantly, he was an idiot for thinking he could change them. This new edition of How to Work for an Idiot is bigger and better--and filled with even more idiots--than before. The same technology that has enabled cluelessness from the corner office to go viral can help you protect yourself and keep your inner idiot in check. Yes, the book goes that deep. Not every boss is an idiot, and not every idiot is a boss. Let Dr. Hoover help you find the wisdom to know the difference.

Natasha: The Biography of Natalie Wood ISBN: 0609603590 | 2001 | EPUB/MOBI | 454 pages | 6 MB/5 MB Natalie Wood was always a star; her mother made sure this was true. A superstitious Russian immigrant who claimed to be royalty, Maria had been told by a gypsy, long before little Natasha Zakharenko's birth, that her second child would be famous throughout the world. When the beautiful child with the hypnotic eyes was first placed in Maria's arms, she knew the prophecy would become true and proceeded to do everything in her power — everything — to make sure of it.

Natasha is the haunting story of a vulnerable and talented actress whom many of us felt we knew. We watched her mature on the movie screen before our eyes — in Miracle on 34th Street, Rebel Without a Cause, West Side Story, Splendor in the Grass, and on and on. She has been hailed — along with Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor — as one of the top three female movie stars in the history of film, making her a legend in her own lifetime and beyond. But the story of what Natalie endured, of what her life was like when the doors of the soundstages closed, has long been obscured. Natasha is based on years of exhaustive research into Natalie's turbulent life and mysterious drowning in the dark water that was her greatest fear. Author Suzanne Finstad, a former lawyer, conducted nearly four hundred interviews with Natalie's family, close friends, legendary costars, lovers, film crews, and virtually everyone connected with the investigation of her strange death. Through these firsthand accounts from many who have never spoken publicly before, Finstad has reconstructed a life of emotional abuse and exploitation, of almost unprecedented fame, great loneliness, poignancy, and loss. She sheds an unwavering light on Natalie's complex relationships with James Dean, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Raymond Burr, Warren Beatty, and Robert Wagner and reveals the two lost loves of Natalie's life, whom her controlling mother prevented her from marrying. Finstad tells this beauty's heartbreaking story with sensitivity and grace, revealing a complex and conflicting mix of fragility and strength in a woman who was swept along by forces few could have resisted. Natasha is impossible to put down — it is the definitive biography of Natalie Wood that we've long been waiting for.

July 1914: Countdown to War ISBN: 0465031455 | 2013 | EPUB/MOBI | 480 pages | 3 MB/3 MB When a Serbian-backed assassin gunned down Archduke Franz Ferdinand in late June 1914, the world seemed unmoved. Even Ferdinand’s own uncle, Franz Josef I, was notably ambivalent about the death of the Hapsburg heir, saying simply, “It is God’s will.” Certainly, there was nothing to suggest that the episode would lead to conflict—much less a world war of such massive and horrific proportions that it would fundamentally reshape the course of human events. As acclaimed historian Sean McMeekin reveals in July 1914, World War I might have been avoided entirely had it not been for a small group of statesmen who, in the month after the assassination, plotted to use Ferdinand’s murder as the trigger for a long-awaited showdown in Europe. The primary culprits, moreover, have long escaped blame. While most accounts of the war’s outbreak place the bulk of responsibility on German and Austro-Hungarian militarism, McMeekin draws on surprising new evidence from archives across Europe to show that the worst offenders were actually to be found in Russia and France, whose belligerence and duplicity ensured that war was inevitable. Whether they plotted for war or rode the whirlwind nearly blind, each of the men involved—from Austrian Foreign Minister Leopold von Berchtold and German Chancellor Bethmann Hollweg to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Sazonov and French president Raymond Poincare—sought to capitalize on the fallout from Ferdinand’s murder, unwittingly leading Europe toward the greatest cataclysm it had ever seen. A revolutionary account of the genesis of World War I, July 1914 tells the gripping story of Europe’s countdown to war from the bloody opening act on June 28th to Britain’s final plunge on August 4th, showing how a single month—and a handful of men—changed the course of the twentieth century.

The Dolphin in the Mirror: Exploring Dolphin Minds and Saving Dolphin Lives ISBN: 0547445725 | 2011 | PDF | 288 pages | 3 MB A memoir by the world’s leading dolphin and whale expert, revealing the extraordinary richness of these animals’ intelligence and exposing our terrible mistreatment of the smartest creatures in the sea. For centuries, humans and dolphins have enjoyed a special relationship, evident not just in mythology and folklore but in many documented encounters. Some past cultures even worshipped dolphins and condemned anyone who killed or wounded of them. Yet in recent decades, a paradox: on the one hand, we have discovered extraordinary depths of dolphin intelligence and their emotional lives, to the point of glimpsing their self-consciousness—on the other hand, in Japan, dolphins are slaughtered indiscriminately, and several nations keep them in cruel conditions. Diana Reiss is one of the world’s leading experts on dolphin intelligence who has helped lead the revolution in dolphin understanding for three decades. In addition, as an activist, she is a leading rescuer who helped inspire and served as an adviser for The Cove, and who continues to campaign against the annual Japanese slaughters. Here, she combines her science and activism to show us just how smart dolphins really are, and why we must stop mistreating them. Readers will be astonished at dolphins’ sonar capabilities; at their sophisticated, lifelong playfulness; at their emotional intelligence; and at their ability to bond with other species, including humans and even dogs! Her beloved companion dolphins, each with distinct personalities, create their own toys, type commands on a keyboard, tease and scold her playfully, and express their affection and delight. In Reiss’s most famous experiments, she used a mirror to prove that dolphins are self-aware, and even self-conscious. The Dolphin in the Mirror is both a scientific revelation and a emotional eye-opener, revealing one of the greatest intelligences on Earth.

Pigskin: The Early Years of Pro Football English | 1997-10-30 | ISBN: 0195119134 | 256 pages | PDF | 15,4 MB If the National Football League is now a mammoth billion-dollar enterprise, it was certainly born into more humble circumstances. Indeed, it began in 1920 in an automobile showroom in Canton, Ohio, when a car dealer called together some owners of teams, mostly in the Midwest, to form a league.

Unlike the lavish boardrooms in which NFL owners meet today, on this occasion the owners sat on the running boards of cars in the showroom and drank beer from buckets. A membership fee of $100 was set, but no one came up with any money. (As one of those present, George Halas, the legendary owner of the Chicago Bears, said, "I doubt that there was a hundred bucks in the room.") From such modest beginnings, pro football became far and away the most popular spectator sport in America. In Pigskin, Robert W. Peterson presents a lively and informative overview of the early years of pro football--from the late 1880s to the beginning of the television era. Peterson describes the colorful beginnings of the pro game and its outstanding teams (the Green Bay Packers, the New York Giants, the Chicago Bears, the Baltimore Colts), and the great games they played. Profiles of the most famous players of the era--including Pudge Heffelfinger (the first certifiable professional), Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Bronko Nagurski, and Fritz Pollard (the NFL's first black star)--bring the history of the game to life. Peterson also takes us back to the roots of the pro game, showing how professionalism began when some stars for Yale, Harvard, and Princeton took money--under the table, of course--for their services to alma mater. By 1895, the money makers--still unacknowledged--had moved to amateur athletic associations in western Pennsylvania and subsequently into Ohio. After the NFL formed in 1920, pro football's popularity grew gradually but steadily. It burst into national prominence with the Bears-Redskins championship game of 1940. As one sportswriter put it: "The weather was perfect. So were the Bears." The final score was 73-0. Peterson shows how, after World War II, the newly-created All America Football Conference challenged the NFL. Though dominated by a gritty Cleveland team, the AAFC was never viewed by NFL teams as much of a threat. That is, not until 1950 when the two leagues merged, bringing about the Cleveland Browns-Philadelphia Eagles game in which the Browns buried the Eagles 35-10. An elegy to a time when, for many players, the game was at least as important as the money it brought them (which wasn't much), Pigskin takes readers up to the 1958 championship game when the Baltimore Colts beat the New York Giants in overtime. By that time, the great popularity of the game had moved from newspapers and radio to television, and pro football had finally arrived as a major sport.
