The Wicked Girls This is a dark story and touches on the minds of child killers. It takes us to the actual event and gives us piecemeal how it happened whilst telling the story of each women and where they are today. i will be definitely looking out for more of her books as it gave a very realistic portrayal of how something could go so wrong and how the media play such a massive role in the way we view real crime and their portrayal of victims.

When Snow Falls After growing up in cheap motels, moving from town to town with her sister and mother, Cheyenne Christensen is grateful to be on her own. She's grateful, too, for the friends she found once her family settled in California. But she's troubled by the mystery of her earliest memories, most of which feature a smiling blonde woman. A woman who isn't her mother. Although Cheyenne has repeatedly asked for explanations, the people who could help aren't talking. Cheyenne is set on finding answers, but without so much as a birth certificate, it won't be easy.

Whiplash River Berney holds the reader's attention rock-solid in this quick 307-page action-packed adventure mystery through interesting, well-developed, mysterious and entertaining characters and setting ranging from the Caribbean to San Francisco to Egypt in a plot-driven ride that will have you thinking, smiling and wondering how "Shake" is going to get out of the messes he finds himself in while being hunted by FBI Special Agent Evelyn Holly, mobsters, goons and hired killers.

The Crimson Crown I admit, this book was not what I was expecting. She could have simply tied up the loose ends left by The Gray Wolf Throne and left it at that, and I would have been okay with that. But this book goes above and beyond, with its own mysteries, twists, and gripping action that took me by surprise. She answers questions in delicious tidbits that make you want to keep reading, rather than revealing everything all at once like I might have expected. There was more danger, more love, and more political intrigue than the previous installments. Emotions were stronger in this book as well, and there were times when I genuinely cried, laughed, or had a big stupid grin on my face as I was reading (a sign of a good book if there ever was one). It's a very well-crafted novel.

The Evolution of Mara Dyer I'm going to go ahead and get my Noah gushing out of the way. With this book he just moved into my number 1 favorite YA boy ever spot. Yes, EVER. I can't put my love (obsession) into words. The chemistry between Mara and Noah was just as intense and sexy as it was in the first book, maybe even more. I honestly blushed and giggled like a teenager. It was awesome. Plus, I don't know the last time I read something this sexy. Whoa. Michelle Hodkin has mastered the perfect balance between an honest, sweet love story and fiery mind-blowing passion.

My Kind of Christmas Paddy is in Virgin River on leave from the Navy after witnessing the death of his best friend while in combat. Of course his brothers are all worried about him, but Paddy wants to be left alone. This is not a concept the Riordan boys, or their mother, understand. This is one thing I absolutely love about this family is that they let no one fall. Someone, most likely all of the them, will be there to catch you and pick you up. Paddy is dealing with a lot and trying to keep his brothers at bay.

Finale Becca Fritzpatrick has come a long way, the series "hush hush" is by far my favorite, this last book was really hard to finish, I guess just knowing that it is the end of ever reading about my two favorite character, it was devastating, but I pull thru and I love ever word written about Patch and Nora, as always Becca delivered, I love everything about this last book I just can't believe I'm not going to have that bubble Building up side me to look forward to the next book anymore because the story of Patch and Nora has come to an end. Thank you Becca I will always love this story, and it was because of the name Patch you picked out that had capture my eyes and led me to reading this series.

After Moonrise The novellas are connected by a paranormal detective agency called After Moonrise- characters in each novella has connections to the agency. I thought it was an interesting idea but each novella went off into an unexpected direction. Anyway, the novellas are primarily mysteries and each has twists and turns (which is why I'm on a no spoilers bent). PC Cast's "Possessed" is the shorter novella and I thought it too brief. The ending came off as too neatly resolved. The twist wasn't much addressed in the ending. And, I couldn't help but wondering about one of the twin sister's well-being in the ending. I thought the romance was tepid- I never got much chemistry between the characters. Gena Showalter's "Haunted" was a longer, more complicated story. Here, both the mysterious lady and the detective have their own personal mysteries to solve. It was pretty well plotted and had a decently complex mystery. I liked the characters a lot more- they were pretty well-drawn. And then... big, old twist! And, for some reason, I was surprised at how grim it was. I shouldn't be- the book gave plenty of foreshadowing but I was still a little taken aback. Again, I just wasn't that into the characters' chemistry. And, post-twist, I had some real problems seeing the chemistry.

The Power of Six I thoroughly enjoyed I am Number Four and was surprised that this second installment was even more intense and action-packed than the first. Filled with shocking twists and surprises around every corner, the story was riveting. With interesting characters that are easy to care about and a complex and engaging story, this science fiction, action thriller for young adults is pure fun and excitement.

The Summer of the Bear The story also works well as an exploration of a family dynamic following the death of a husband and father. The relationship between the siblings rings true. Each kid reacts to Nicky's death in a different, credible, well-defined way. Letty's two daughters are simultaneously endearing and maddening that also rings true, as does their resentment of their mother's detachment after their father's death. Finally, the story does a reasonably sound job of building suspense as the characters edge closer to learning the truth about Nicky's actions. The conclusion of that storyline is quite satisfying. The ending of the parallel story involving Jamie and the bear was too over-the-top for my taste, although I'll concede that it was well done. While the result is a mixed review, on balance I recommend the novel because more elements work than fail, and even the elements that didn't thrill me were skillfully executed.

The Third Man The form is interesting too as it's narrated by a British policeman. He has some interesting philosophical discussions with the lead character, a fellow Brit named Rollo Martins who has been

summoned to Vienna by a long-time friend, Harry Limes, only to find a funeral in progress for Limes when he arrives. The mystery deepens as he sets upon doing his own form of detective work. The writing is stark, with excellent dialog and the cast of characters is somewhat confusing at first. As we learn more and more, the book picks up speed and we're hurtled into the conclusion that, while it is satisfactory, never really answers all of the questions raised. With just a few words though, it made me look at some deeper issues than the plot, such as the moral conscience of the characters as well as the particular time period in which they lived. And if there are no easy answers? Well, that's the way life is.

The White Tree: The Cycle of Arawn This was one of the most amazing books I've ever read. I could absolutely see it as a movie. The use of a sort of psychic power of the "nether" was something I've never seen or heard of before and it was quite intriguing. I hope to see more from Dante and Blays in the future!

The Wreckage Michael Crummey has composed another masterfully written novel. He is a superb craftsman of the English language. He skillfully moves the plot along in various times and places as smoothly as a series of rivers finally meeting at a common end. The plot itself is great and sophisticated as well, but I simply can't get over the authors writing ability.

Who Stole the American Dream? I learn a great deal in reading this book. Indeed, the author's presentation of Richard Nixon blows my mind. I had no idea that "Tricky Dick" had led so many good things into legislation, and that it was a Republican (I used to be one) that inspired the business backlash that turned into a route for democracy.

Word and Breath The Front would rather be Free and not take orders from the Union. They are led by the Librarian, a man who sends his orders and other important information, through old letters, cards and whatnot. He's watched Riana closely for three years now, but doesn't want her involved with the Front. However, that decision is about to be irrevocably changed. Mikel is a Breather. He has the capability of sensing emotions and taking memories through touch. The person he is touching must be a willing partner for it to work, or they could go insane. He's the best of the best and he's been hired by the Union to locate Riana, make her trust him and get the information his boss desires.

Zom-B When B's father first sees the news reports about zombies in Ireland, he laughs it off. Even if there were zombies, he doesn't care much about the Irish...or blacks, or Indians or anyone not up to his British standards. This bigotry infest B to. At first B makes like it's just an act, just pretending to have this hatred. When B acts out in school though, it seems to be more than just pretend hatred. B's friends also hear about the zombie attacks, they are a bit less skeptical. They are more concerned about B's racism. B's best friend is black and it doesn't make sense for B to hate others based on their skin. When the zombies come though, B will have to decided what really matters in life. Does being a person not native to England make you less important? Can B make it out alive and save some people too?

The Dragons of Ordinary Farm The book is fast-paced despite the large cast of characters and the plot thickens quickly. The tone is modern (think of "Otherland for kids") and the story is less straightforward fantasy but rather science fantasy. Many secrets are revealed and some mysteries solved, but although the first book offers closure, the story is far from over and many mysteries remain intact to be solved in future volumes. Perfect summer book for kids and parents alike.

The Genesis Plague At the dawn of civilization … An exotic stranger appears in a Mesopotamian village and is venerated as a goddess … until she unleashes a horror beyond anything humankind has ever known. At the sunset of civilization … A mercenary unit in northern Iraq, led by Sergeant Jason Yaeger, has trapped radical Islam's most wanted target in a mysterious cave that sits at the heart of the Genesis story. When a Marine platoon seeks to control the extraction mission, a threat far more ominous is found lurking beneath the mountains. Meanwhile in Boston, Massachusetts, Agent Thomas Flaherty helps archaeologist Brooke Thompson escape assassination by a Las Vegas televangelist intent on using the cave's deepest secret to bring the Middle East to its knees.

The Harbinger "The Harbinger" by Jonathan Cahn was written for a time such as this, mesmerizing and fascinating from beginning to end. In light of current events, this book is an eye opener for every American. The book is presented in a narrative fashion and uses scripture to demonstrate the ties between the destruction of ancient Israel and America. Anyone searching for answers in the midst of the chaos, unrest and fear that is prevalent in America today will find "The Harbinger" provides a glimmer of hope. Cahn offers these words from scripture "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14. This book surely is a wake up call for Americans to get on their knees and reclaim this great nation before it's too late.

The Language of Fear I'll never forget the day that I was helping my uncle sort out his belongings from a divorce and he asked me the burning question...'Hey, are you still a big Guns N Roses freak?" He handed me a book that I had been wanting to read for an eternity. The Language of Fear unlocked something in my head.

The Last Prophecy I won't say this is perfect writing, but it's plenty good enough to merit a strong four stars. My biggest "problem" with Land is that he is only writing books featuring Barnea and Kamal I miss his older novels with Blaine McCracken, which were even more delightfully outlandish with their James Bondlike world conquest plots. But in the absence of McCracken, this series still fits the bill for what Land does best: entertain from beginning to end.

The Measure of the Magic Despite being a long-time fantasy fan and having heard good things about this series, this was my first read in it. I had mixed expectations, as the one consistent thing I've heard is that it's definitely a cop-off of LotR (especially the earlier books). I was impressed. It was a very good read. Not the best fantasy I've read by any stretch, but enough to get me to want to read the other books. And that speaks for itself.

The Monster Man of Horror House Danny King knows how to take classic and often overworked horror monsters (vampires, werewolves, maniac killers) and make them interesting and fun again. I just loved reading this book, every second of it. Every town has its old resident wierdo, and I loved what the author did with that premise. I found it very interesting to see what might have made those eccentric wierdos that way in the first place! What a fascinating and tragic life the main character had led! Not to mention the author also made this a slightly humorous read as well, I found my laughing throughout the book, but make no mistake, it is still a horror novel, and does not disappoint in that regard. I highly recommend this book!

The Most Dangerous Thing In a provocative and thoughtful novel, Lippman is not content to let events drive her story, delving relentlessly into personalities, motives, the collision of egos and the instinct for self-preservation. Guilt is reduced to nearly equal portions, a collective tragedy, a collective secret that begs for release. As expected, the truth provides a measure of relief, the breaking of silence the only palliative to nowadult lives filled with mistakes and opportunities. Humanity is, after all, a complicated thing. Lippman avoids the easy dismissal or the facile explanation. No, this is murkier territory, where only one body remains buried, secrets intact.

The Omen Machine Hannis Arc, working on the tapestry of lines linking constellations of elements that constituted the language of Creation recorded on the ancient Cerulean scroll spread out among the clutter on his desk, was not surprised to see the seven etherial forms billow into the room like acrid smoke driven on a breath of bitter breeze. Like an otherworldly collection of spectral shapes seemingly carried on random eddies of air, they wandered in a loose clutch among the still and silent mounted bears and beasts rising up on their stands, the small forest of stone pedestals holding massive books of recorded prophecy, and the evenly spaced display cases of oddities, their glass reflecting the firelight from the massive hearth at the side of the room.

Small Town Sinners If I had to pick one problem with the novel , I would say that Lacey's parents were a bit unpredictable. One minute is was a sort of 'fire and brimstone' and then the next it seemed 'gentle as a lamb.' I understand that they were un-used to punishing her, but I think a grounding might have been something that might have been tried. It wasn't bothersome, again because I enjoyed the book and the depth to which Lacey could grow and expand to find herself. This book also brought up questions about double standards, and I really enjoyed the fact that it was questioned by the characters. Lacey earned my respect and kept it. If only everyone could be as dedicated to conscious thought and being in touch with their mind. The Abortion Girl line was a little odd. While an important topic, it was weird to see how much this girl wanted to be the character. It was almost perverse and, if you've seen the documentaries 'Hell House' and 'Jesus Camp' you know exactly what I'm talking about. It's clear that author Melissa Walker not only did her research, but she kept characters real and believeable.

Sons and Princes LePore writes a captivating story nearly impossible to put down. His characters are both memorable and frightening. Each one of us may carry the seed of violence that can blossom into the fruit of death. The trigger for response is as uniquely individual as a finger print. Chris Massi finds within himself family ties he didn't know existed. LePore masterfully depicts a conflicted soul driven to acts of desperation for the noblest of virtues.

Soulstorm It really is an exceptional horror novel on many levels. The plot borrows from Matheson's Hell House and Jackson's Haunting of Hill House, but Williamson brings lots of interesting ideas to the table and does an outstanding job with it. A group of characters are offered large sums of money to spend a month in a mansion in PA that is rumored to be haunted. It is indeed and the entity that lives there is as evil as they get. The characters are interesting and believable, the scares are fresh and inventive, and the story moves quickly.

Tesla: Man Out of Time Nikola Tesla was a dapper man who spoke eight languages fluently and onced signed away riches for the benefit of a friend (George Westinghouse) who had supported him in the past. He was a naturalized U.S. citizen and this he considered his greatest accomplishement. His experiments through most of his life were constanty in need of funds and he approached the US Government several times. One can only wonder what might have come of his knowledge if the government had agreed to fund him. Thankfully his devotion was to the United States because both Russia and Germany approached him and he turned them down. As it turns out the US Government expressed much more interest in his experiments after his death than when he was alive. Apparently taking his notes and classifying them and also moving forward in his ideas.

The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern There is no detailed political story here, but on these sort of big points you feel Majd has probably got it right: the MEK is rightly loathed by most Iranians Iranians' garden walls (the public/private divide) is still respected the idea that the Diaspora Iranians will have any political influence is laughable the Islamic Republic has massive and committed support, easily seen when Majd attended the revolution's anniversary party there is no appetite for another violent revolution the young are more interested in social freedoms than politics, the old in economic security and so as long as the rulers remember their `Shia sensibilities', (the right of the righteous David to fight the oppressive Goliath) there will be no internal overthrow of the constitution Ayatollah Khomeini set up over thirty years ago.

Off the Grid: A Monkeewrench Novel It was strange, almost like reading 2 books by different authors. In some parts I was on the edge of my seat anticipating what was going to happen next, then time and time again, it fell completely flat. The ending was over way too fast and you really didnt get a sense of what exactly happened. It seemed very rushed.

Personal Effects I'll will spare you another blurb and get right to the point. I read this book in a day, hardly put it down, and was completely spent and satisfied when I came out the other side. The last YA I've read that had a similar effect on me was Green's Fault in Our Stars. E.M. Kokie has crafted a pace perfect emotional roller coaster with complex characters. I loved this book and hope she is working on something else. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys contemporary YAs.

Remember Tuesday Morning Be aware that this is the new title for Every Now & Then. Do not purchase this if you've already got that book!

Roadside Picnic I read this book originally in Russian when I was eleven years old. I'm almost forty now and have to say that neither time nor language have taken anything away from this wonderful book. In my opinion this book is a great introduction to Brothers Strugatsky and Soviet Science Fiction in general. I have to give special recognition to Olena Bormashenko for the excellent translation, she truly did justices to Strugatsky's unique style, staying true to both form and substance.

Strange Brew I bought this book because I love Jim Butcher and Patricia Briggs. I enjoyed every one of the nine short stories in this book and wished there were more. I had not read anything from the other authors in this antology, but I plan to start now. The only thing I did not like was that I wanted the stories to be a little longer to finish out the story a little better.

Ruin Thirty years ago there was a Revolution. Humans, who had been granted powers through experiments performed upon them against their will, broke free from the labs and burned across the land creating a dangerous territory called the Wildlands. Paula has grown up in the Neutral Territory, never knowing a time without the neighboring Wildlands as a threat. Her government does what it can to protect her people, but they still live in fear of the powerful Wildlanders invading their safe and protected territory. Until the night when Paula's mother is arrested, and Paula is banned from the Neutral Territory to the Wildlands. Now she must make a new life for herself in a territory of people she knows will not be welcoming.

Crush OK, to be perfectly and completely honest, I wasn't expecting to like this as much as Lacey Weatherford's Of Witches and Warlocks series. So far I've loved everything she's ever written, but I generally prefer fantasy to contemporary. So, I expected to love it, just not quite as much. Hah. I was wrong. This is probably Lacey's best novel yet.

Demon Day Fletcher has created a believable future world in which demons, both good and evil, share the Earth with the remaining shreds of humanity. Her character descriptions are so clear and distinct that she paints unique pictures in the reader's mind of not only their looks, but their smells and sounds, too. Rae is torn between Braendan and Tomas, and between the human and fairy worlds, and she isn't fully informed about the truth from anyone. As a reader I found myself compelled to learn more, and her storyline doesn't disappoint.

Department 19 Department 19 tells Jamie's story in 2005 England, but also jumps around from Transylvania, Victorian London, New York in the 1920's, and just a few years earlier in remote Russia. Action, adventure, horror, and a bit of romance fill this incredible new thriller. With heart-pounding suspense and excessive violence, this exhilarating new release will be enjoyed by young adult and adult fans of the vampire genre and the monster horror classics. Vampires, Frankenstein's monster, and werewolves - they all exist. And author Will Hill does a fantastic job of weaving the classics into modern day, with fast-paced action and edge-of-your-seat excitement. In a final showdown, with plenty of twists and surprises, my only disappointment was to see this one end. And impressive debut, this is the start of a promising new series and a clear-cut hit.

Disordered World: Setting a New Course for the Twenty-first Century Before the fall of communism there was apparent order, albeit a superficial one because order implies stability and freedom from oppression. The Berlin Wall fell and then the entire Iron Curtain, revealing the USA as the solitary world power. Could circumstances have been better for the USA to surge ahead and lead the world to an orderliness never before experienced? Unfortunately, no. Maalouf pulls the threads of history across the globe, particularly from the dysfunctional Arab world to show that so far the sole power flunked. It falterd partly because many countries became more successful, ironically, through the adoption of the western democratic model. The stronger criticism was that the USA failed in its moral responsibility to the people whose oppressive political leaders it had helped overthrow. Quoting Colin Powell's warning to Bush: "You break it, you own it."

Dolphin Way: Rise of the Guardians There are certain things that amaze me about authors. One of those is how some amazing writers can create worlds so different from the world we live in. Mark Caney is one of those authors that blows me away! He has created an entire society that includes a culture, music, stories and legends, poetry, etiquette and all else that makes up a fully developed society. That this society is underwater

in the oceans we all know, and populated by dolphins, makes it all the more amazing to me. He has all the details worked out - right down to the quotes at the start of each chapter that are 'from' ancient dolphin poets, scriptures and other writings. It's a little embarrassing to admit, but about half way through the book I realised I had wandered to a place in my mind where I was accepting the story as true. Had to stop for a reality check.

Early Warning Walsh's writing has taken great strides since the last book, relying less on technical details and more on zipping things along. However, Walsh still knows his equipment and tech, you will learn something new about technology after reading this book. Even better, you will learn a lot about history, music, cryptography, and literature on nearly every page. I found myself ordering more books about the subjects Walsh discusses through his great characters. The story of the book ends with satisfaction, but at the same time it is clear that there is a lot more story to tell, making it a little frustrating to not have any more books lined up and ready to read.

Enemy Within In the end it wasn't the action (which there was more than enough of), the suspense, the romance (although Ari and Cullin are a couple who you KNOW will go the distance, and then some) or the battle at the end-what made this book for me was the characters and the everyday, humane "little things"...like when Ari would have a flashback and Cullin would talk her down, or Ari's willingness to sacrifice herself even though it means handing herself over to her worst nightmare, or their interactions when they sparred with one another (verbally and literally).

Faerie I liked the heroine, Leonie, who was half human and half faerie. She had to keep her faerie origins a secret because people didn't understand magic and the supernatural even though they knew it existed. They thought it was evil and it was very likely they would have killed her as a witch. Philippe was also very likeable. He was a cursed knight who could never love again. His curse was that he would murder whoever he loved with his own hands. After seeing his wife's death caused by the same person who cursed him, he had no desire to cause another woman's death. Leonie had fallen in love with Philippe almost from the first time she had seen him when she was a young girl. Years later when she saw him again, nothing had changed. Then something happened that made her fear and dislike him. Hoping to have him imprisoned , she is shocked at the king's punishment.

Barefoot in Baghdad: A Story of Identity-My Own and What It Means to Be a Woman in Chaos The redemptive nature of this tale, both on a personal and broader societal front, conveys a central message of hope overcoming what might so easily have been a position of despair. The uplifting and youthful approach which Omar takes to her subject matter is as captivating in the fluency and ease of her writing as it is in the way in which she is able to navigate her position among the many diverse segments of Iraqi society. No matter whether you view the US occupation of Iraq as unwarranted or as totally justifiable in terms of their acting as a liberation force, Barefoot in Baghdad should be of interest to you. Giving both an insider's and an outsider's view of the unfolding drama of Iraq, the memoir should prove worthwhile reading for anyone who has a keen interest in developments in the Middle East.

Bear Down, Bear North: Alaska Stories In her debut collection, Melinda Moustakis brings to life a rough-and-tumble family of Alaskan homesteaders through a series of linked stories. Born in Alaska herself to a family with a homesteading legacy, Moustakis examines the near-mythological accounts of the Alaskan wilderness that are her inheritance and probes the question of what it means to live up to larger-than-life expectations for toughness and survival. The characters in Bear Down, Bear North are salt-tongued fishermen, fisherwomen, and hunters, scrappy storytellers who put themselves in the path of destruction—sometimes a harsh snowstorm, sometimes each other and live to tell the tale. While backtrolling for kings on the Kenai River or filleting the catch of the Halibut Hellion with marvelous speed, these characters recount the gamble

they took that didn’t pay off, or they expound on how not only does Uncle Too-Soon need a girlfriend, the whole state of Alaska needs a girlfriend. A story like “The Mannequin at Soldotna” takes snapshots: a doctor tends to an injured fisherman, a man covets another man’s green fishing lure, a girl is found in the river with a bullet in her head. Another story offers an easy moment with a difficult mother, when she reaches out to touch a breaching whale. This is a book about taking a fishhook in the eye, about drinking cranberry lick and Jippers and smoking Big-Z cigars. This is a book about the one good joke, or the one night lit up with stars, that might get you through the winter.

Best New Vampire Tales, Vol 1 OK, in the spirit of full disclosure, I have a story in this volume ("Cold Calls,) but I'd give this collection the same review even if I weren't in it. Tired of sparkly vampires? Pick up a copy of this collection and rediscover what has made vampires the No. 1 nightmare creature for more than 100 years now. Believe me, David Niall Wilson's "A Candle Lit in Sunlight" is alone worth the price of admission. Great collection, attractively priced, highly recommended. Enjoy!

Beware False Profits As with previous entries in the series, this is a fun cozy mystery. The multiple sub-plots did slow down the story once or twice, but not for very long. The story held plenty of twists before reaching the satisfying climax. The characters are wonderfully real, especially the members of Aggie's family. And Aggie narrates all of this with a nice sense of humor that keeps me coming back for more.

Blood of the Son Blood of the Son kept my interest through the whole book and I had a hard time putting it down. The style of the book is similar to Charlaine Harris. The character works for a bar and is really good at it, she falls into the world of vampires, and she can't figure out which hot vampire she likes better. The characters are very well defined and have great personalities. McCoy does a better job than Charlaine in dialouge. I can tell who is speaking by the way they talk. Everyone in the Sookie Stackhouse books always sounded like a country bumpkin even if they were a 200 year old vampire from Europe.

Building From Ashes Brigid Conner was rescued by vampires of Carwyn's family years ago from a horrible situation and Carwyn has watched her grow up as part of his son Ione's family, this novel covers a span of years from 1995 until summer of 2012 which probably accounts for its length. It steps over parts of the story

from The Elemental Mysteries and creates concurrent stories that were happening during the time of that series and hence you feel like you are visiting with old friends while meeting new ones.

Bully This is an impressively accomplished novel - from the first word it seizes a grip on the reader which doesn't let up until the close. It's impassioned, involving and visceral and Kirby is deft at planting in the reader's minds possibilities which then terrifyingly come to pass. It isn't for the faint hearted though it's brutal, dark and at times claustrophobic. The choking sense of drama and the perfectly nuanced dialogue all make this book a thrilling proposition. I'm not usually a fan of horror but this book is really worth making an exception for.

Bully Blocking: SIx Secrets to Help Children Deal With Teasing and Bullying This confidence-boosting book aims to help children overcome the damaging effects of teasing and bullying, and to develop practical skills and attitudes to improve their self-esteem and quality of life. This second edition of "Bully Blocking" (originally published under the title "Bully Busting") is based on Evelyn Field's 'Secrets of relating', a six-step model that has proved highly successful in her counselling work with young people. The first part of the book helps parents understand what happens when their children are bullied and provides useful approaches for changing the attitude of children who may feel there is no hope. The second part provides a programme of activities with an emphasis of fun, helping children to understand their feeling and develop effective methods of counteracting bullying situations, including improving self-esteem, building support networks and communicating confidently. This book will be an invaluable resource for parents, teachers, educators and counsellors working with children at risk of or experiencing bullying.

Bury Your Dead: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel BURY YOUR DEAD is a fabulous novel. It effortlessly intertwines three plots: the two geographically separated murder cases going on in real time and, in retrospective, the disastrous Canadian police operation that left dead and near dead in its wake. Gamache's probing in Quebec City examines (without being pretentiously didactic) the tensions between the Anglophones and the Francophones, it delves into the Battle of the Plains of Abraham which shaped the destiny of the beautiful old metropolis, and it searches for answers to the mystery of where founding father Champlain might be buried. To say too much about the plot dims the satisfaction of reading this splendid work, so I'll say no more, except to note that toward the end a careful reader can savor the emotion, the psychological insights, and the often beautiful language but also look beyond them to ask questions about a few apparent plot inconsistencies. But overall, I'd say this is Penny's best book to date, and it doesn't require full knowledge of the previous novels to be accessible.

The Bloody Tower "The Bloody Tower" was a quick and easy read from the very first page. This was due entirely to the author's energetic and effervescent prose style, and the fact that she managed to maintain and light touch in spite of the dark overtones the storyline sometimes decreed. I particularly enjoyed all the colourful and atmospheric descriptions of the Tower of London shrouded in fog. It was only two paragraphs long, but it set the tone and was completely memorable. I also enjoyed the all the wonderful red herring suspects that the author had thoughtfully provided for me as well as interesting plot twists. Best of all though, was observing how Daisy and Alec interacted with each other, assisting and respecting each other's strengths, and so working together to catch another killer. All in all a very enjoyable and absorbing read.

The Breaking: Skinners The Skinners books are definately one of my top 3 all time Urban Fantasy reads...if you like your books with more action/suspense than romance this series is for you.... The world created in this series just keeps getting better with each chapter. Im sad to see that the finale will be book 6 (the next release), but maybe we will see some spinoff books or something.

The Brothers Boswell If you enjoy literary thrillers, this book has everything. The characters are complex and interesting, the action is riveting, and the humor is great. Baruth takes an indirect approach to the famous relationship between Dr. Samuel Johnson and his biographer, James Boswell. The main character is James's troubled younger brother, John, who stalks James and Dr. Johnson, all the while raging with envy and resentment. The twists and turns of the plot (and of John's mind) are surprising and totally believable. The historical details are amusing and so well handled that they don't get in the way of the story. The

author doesn't let his evident enjoyment of 18th C London become a fetish. Sentence by sentence, the book is a pleasure to read.

The Lambs of London "The Lambs of London" is a nifty little book that blends history and fiction with just a soupcon of mystery to make for a very satisfying read. In the last decade of the 18th century, William Henry Ireland really did produce a number of Shakespeare-related manuscripts (including a letter to the bard from Queen Elizabeth) that experts swore were authentic. I know of no factual connection to Charles and Mary Lamb, but Mary's tragic history (somewhat telescoped here) dovetails nicely with that of Ireland, who, like Chatterton, was but a teenager when he committed his infamous forgeries, the most notorious of which was a "lost play" by Shakespeare entitled "Vortigern," after the Dark-age British King. Other sources give the full title of the play as "Vortigern and Rowena," although this is never mentioned by Ackroyd, and there are other minor discrepancies as well (for instance, Ireland's socalled "patron" and source of the manuscripts is usually given as another young man and not a woman), but Ackroyd is not so much interested in the truth as in the "larger narrative." And a riveting narrative it is! Along the way, we meet such period heavy hitters as Richard Brinsley Sheridan and Thomas de Quincey, and there are fine portraits of lesser-knowns such as Ireland's father, Samuel, an antiquarian who was ruined by the scandal, and Charles Lamb's circle of bibulous friends from the East India House, who stage a play of their own, portraying the "mechanicals" in Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream." The climax of the novel is a brilliantly realized staging of "Vortigern," which may or may not have been the travesty it was later judged to be. There is more attention to character and plot in "The Lambs of London" than is typical of Ackroyd's novels, thus making this one of his best. I recommend it warmly.

The Mask of Troy One of the things I enjoyed most about this book was the message delivered about how long man has worked to stop wars and how, all too often, we start them for no better reason than we can because a strategic advantage may exist for a moment in time. Someone will tend to find a way to exploit that advantage. Gibbins' use of the phrases and imagery of The Age of Heroes and the Age of Man is powerful and thought-provoking. Gibbins is a master of this genre and infuses his work with personal experience as an underwater archaeologist. If you like a lot of action and want to learn a bit about antiquities as you go, you'll really enjoy this book!

The Mistress' House I liked Richard's and Felicity's tale the best. This touching story of the wronged cit's daughter and the former spare, who must yet again clean up one of his brother's messes, catches at our heartstrings as their devil's bargain blossoms into love. A tale to remember and savor.

The Nostradamus Prophecies Mario Reading presents a fresh and original take on Nostradamus that takes the reader into unchartered territory. The missing prophecies provide an absorbing hook but do not over-burden and this provides space for the narrative to take us in new directions, which Reading does through his fascinating look at gypsy history. Add to this a cast of distinctive and funny characters and a shocking, thoroughly unexpected ending, the Nostradamus Prophecies was everything I was looking for. If fast-paced historical thrillers in the Dan Brown vein are your thing then this is definitely a recommended read. Gripping from beginning to end I read the whole thing in one fraught sitting.

The Polished Hoe Enriched with native tongues and a sort of stream of consciousness writing, this is a novel that brought to mind some of the great writers of all time. The prose was lilting, and I often found myself caught in a reverie as the characters related memories from their lives. It is not a book for the drama lovers who live for fast paced reads rather it seems to have been written for those who love narration, historical fiction, and carefully crafted characterizations.

The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating What makes this memoir unique, besides her indomitable spirit, is that she doesn't push any sort of religious or spiritual agenda for her positive outlook. There is no implied message, which is often a feature of such an inspiring book. Her facts are based on solid research, and she doesn't waste words her prose is clear and precise. Additionally, and this may be trivial, but the book is exceptionally beautiful: little snail insignias, and designs, poetic quotes, and the actual fonts and design layout make it lovely.

Venice: Pure City This was a very pleasant read. He gets right down into the dialect and persona of the Venetian citizen and makes a pretty convincing argument that their City and its history molded their character and world-view. There is a good overview of how the city was built over time. Their amazingly successful political structure is explained. He comes pretty close to capturing and expressing the mystique of Venice. When I go there, it is always a chameleon. Sometimes as old, filthy and smelly as a destitute subway platform. Sometimes, as charming, and ageless as a dreamscape that unfolds before your eyes. It's a unique city. If you've been there yourself, this book will add to your understanding of what you've experienced and if you haven't been there, the book will introduce you to a fascinating people and place.

Apocalypse for Beginners I concur with all the other positive things that have been said of this beautiful book. It's funny, tender, clever, romantic and inventive. And if that wasn't enough the book itself is beautifully designed and typeset so one really does receive pleasure on all levels (Julian Barnes would approve.) But finally I remain mystified why this book seems not to have had the exposure it deserves because this is a novel that is as surely life-enhancing as any modern novel can be. I would urge you to read it and then tell me I'm wrong.

Author Richard Reid presents a thought-provoking and illuminating journey through the key moments and issues that have shaped Africa's recent past. Arguing that the continent's story cannot be understood without full consideration of its deeper historical experience – both the violent dynamism within Africa, and the external challenges confronting it – Reid focuses on the continuity between the pre-colonial and the postcolonial eras, in addition to highlighting the multifaceted impact of colonial rule. The new edition places stronger emphasis on the legacies of the 19th century and the colonial period in the context of the twenty-first century. Reid also explores the contemporary tensions facing Africa, including those most apparent in recent developments in Darfur, Sudan, Somalia, Côte d'Ivoire, and Libya. A History of Modern Africa is an essential recounting of the turning points of Africa's past and the rich and diverse strands of African culture that will help shape its future.

The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives 2008 | ISBN-10: 0375424040, 0307275175 | EPUB, MOBI, PDF | 272 pages | 3 MB A drunkard's walk is a type of random statistical distribution with important applications in scientific studies ranging from biology to astronomy. Mlodinow, a visiting lecturer at Caltech and coauthor with Stephen Hawking of A Briefer History of Time, leads readers on a walk through the hills and valleys of randomness and how it directs our lives more than we realize. Mlodinow introduces important historical figures such as Bernoulli, Laplace and Pascal, emphasizing their ideas rather than their tumultuous private lives. Mlodinow defines such tricky concepts as regression to the mean and the

law of large numbers, which should help readers as they navigate the daily deluge of election polls and new studies on how to live to 100. The author also carefully avoids veering off into the terra incognita of chaos theory aside from a brief mention of the famous butterfly effect, although he might have spent a little more time on the equally famous n-body problem that led to chaos theory. Books on randomness and statistics line library shelves, but Mlodinow will help readers sort out Mark Twain's damn lies from meaningful statistics and the choices we face every day.
