Dear Husband: Stories These fourteen short stories focus on family relationships that appear initially normal, but turn grim when a crisis occurs. Each tale is well written and insightful with some shocking. For example "Dear Husband" is a letter from infanticide mom Andrea Yates explaining to her spouse she did God's work when she drowned their children. "Vigilante" focuses on a drug abuser son trying to kick the habit while helping his mom avenge his father. Though some aspects of the theme has been used often by Ms. Oates, all the entries are "Special" whether it stars an autistic child devastating the lives of her caretaker parents and her ignored younger sister or a juror attracted to a charismatic defendant in "Mistrial". Women forced to make difficult decisions that fail to go as planned in "Cutty Sark," and "Landfill," or meeting the boyfriend's family in "The Glazers,", are part of "Dear Joyce Carol Oates" entreating look at the dark side of the American family.
Double Homicide Still life: This story opens just as two detectives Steve katz and Darrell Two Moons are seated for dinner. A homicide, a very prestigous art dealer found in his studio with his head caved in. Too many people with grudges and motives to render this man dead makes this story fast paced and true "Good read". Full of turns and excitement. This author is well versed and makes for an easy read. In the land of Giants: This story opens to a Mother - not unlike any other Mother - in the fact that she cleans her teenagers room after she can no longer stand the putrid smells that elude from their private compounds. But this Mother just happens to be a Homicide Detective for the Boston PD. Upon further investigation as to the smell she finds a surprise in her youngest sons backpack. The oldest of her children is aspiring to be a NBA player and is well on his way. There just happens to be a murder which her son is closely related to. This Mother is out to find the truth. This book is well written and an easy read. This book is written by husband and wife, they write well together. I think this is very well written and easy to read.I suggest you sit down and curl up because your going to want to read this entirely in one sitting. I give this book 3 stars.
Firefly Summer I have been on a Binchy marathon for the past nine months which has culminated with this novel, Firefly Summer. Let me tell you, this book was utterly fantastic. The story of Mountfern touched me from the very beginning when the kids learned their "special place", the burned remains of an old, once powerful mansion, would be rebuilt. Because of this, their entire world changed. Maeve Binchy spins a wonderful Irish yarn that takes a surprising plot twist at the end. If you liked The Glass Lake or Light a Penny Candle, this book is definitely for you. I can't stop raving about it!!!
Fuzzy Nation It's a solid story with defined characters and not magic "gotcha" moments. Nothing in the book feels as if it were created out of thin air. Even the one large and most surprising development has it's roots firmly established long before the revelation is made. It becomes an "ah" moment rather than "really?" and, given the state of modern fiction, I appreciated the effort.
Heartwood: Billy Bob Boy Howdy I still think that James Lee Burke is showing us the less attractive side of America. HEARTWOOD is no different than his previous works in that regard. What it does do exceedingly well is explore a man's limits and his sense of personal honor and integrity. Just like Dave, Billy Bob Holland is a man of action but no longer one of barely restrained violence. While I once thought they were two sides of the same coin, I now realize that I must modify my opinion. Dave and Billy Bob are more cousins than they are brothers. The brotherly part only comes to the fore when th reader realizes that both man stand for doing the right thing.

Hellboy: Odd Jobs The Hellboy comics take much of its material from Lovecraftian sources and folklore. Such a literary heritage makes the Odd Jobs anthology an excellent read. Legends, Hellboy, and prose blend quite nicely to produce a multi-faceted look at the greatest paranormal investigator. Highlights include the quirjy humor of Greg Rucka's "Delivered," Nancy Holder's brutal "Folie a Deux," the sad beauty of Craig Shaw Gardner's "Demon Politics," and Poppy Z. Brite's "Burn, Baby, Burn," a rare look at Liz, on of the most intriguing characters in the Hellboy world. But the diamond amongst this collection is "Jigsaw," by Stephen R. Bissette. Horrifying, touching, delicate and perfect would be the best way to describe this story. There are some uneven points in the collection, some repetitive moments but the strengths are far more common. If nothing else, "Jigsaw" itself is worth the price, and then some.
Hellboy: Odder Jobs A reasonable selection of tales. The weaker ones are probably the earlier, more ghost story types. Because basically, the Right Hand of Doom cannot wail on ghosts, and Hellboy is there to see if he can find out what is going on, mostly. The best stories are the crossover, by Charles de Lint, with his Newford milieu. A veteran Newford cop has been ordered to set up a paranormal task force. He, of course, thinks this is a punishment. It pretty much appears the guy has been walking around oblivious. Then Hellboy comes to town, to assist in an investigation. A big, fishy eye-opener for the new paranormal task force. There are other monsters, including a relative, crazed Romanians, etc, and even a Lobster Johnston snippet, and a psychic regression story, starring Abe Sapien.
House of Dreams House of Dreams is the personal diary of Thu of Aswat, and it is a fascinating document. Written in the first person, each page chronicles her life from poor peasant girl in the rural Nile farming village of Aswat, to favored concubine in the Royal Harem of Ramses III at Pi-Ramesse. Omitting nothing, this blue-eyed daughter of an Egyptian midwife and Libu mercenary takes us on a journey that travels a path from childish innocence to vile debauchery. We are with her every step of the way. We walk with the young Thu as she leads the family bovine "Precious Sweet Eyes" to the banks of the Nile. We plunge into the Nile with Thu in the dead of night and board the barge of the Seer Hui, where she offers her virginity to the gods of ambition. We witness the education and humiliation she endures to achieve external beauty and power. We sympathize with her as she is cruely manipulated by those with a terrible agenda. Sadly we watch, as by her own choice she becomes a murderess to fulfill her impossible dreams. Lady of the Reeds is a self-serving diary, as Thu attempts to justify her actions to all who read it.
The Truth About Forever The Truth About Forever is about sixteen-year-old Macy, who's father has recently died and who's mother has emotionally shut her out. She hides her loss behind a mask of perfection everything has to be flawless...her hair, her boyfriend, her schoolwork. That is, until she meets the chaotic crew that is Wish Catering, who teach her things don't have to be perfect to be beautiful. She meets Wes, and through a continuous game of Truth with him, Macy learns that broken hearts, like her's, can be patched up again. Her rigid, ideal life begins to be chipped away, as she learns the real truth about forever
Twice Bitten The world building continues to be one of the strengths of this series. The informative glimpses we got of vampire life in the first two books are continued in this one. And we also see more of how sorcery magic works, as well as an indepth introduction to shapeshifters--how they are organized, their magic, their politics, etc. Also, I like how Chicago is so prominent as the setting. The touches of real-life Chicago add color and depth to the story. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, I highly recommend the Chicagoland Vampires series. It reminds me of a cross between Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series and Shelly Laurenston's Pride Stories (which is saying a lot since I love both series). Briggs in the way it's an urban fantasy with strong world building an appealing leading gal as the main character and good mix of action, mystery, suspense with a little romance. Laurenston in the snarky humor and terrific dialogue. A truly great mix of styles resulting in an original, entertaining series.

Winter Prey Luckily, with WINTER PREY, Sandford has changed his structure to the better, creating a nerve-frying tale of terror that ranks with the finest of the decade. The eerie snowbound locations lend plenty of isolated, creepy texture to the plot, while Sandford brilliantly elicits a disturbing, menacing atmosphere that puts us right into the story, giving us ingenious clues and surprise plot revelations to keep us glued to the pages all night long. Lucas Davenport emerges as a fully realized individual, while the supporting characters are first-rate, as are the action scenes and forensic details. A masterpiece.
You Might Be a Zombie and Other Bad News: Shocking but Utterly True Facts You'll laugh a lot, and probably cringe even more when you read through the nearly 300 pages of this handy dandy guide that pretty much ruins everything you ever held dear by pointing out the ways in which you were lied to over the years, while also forming a new appreciation for people like Teddy Roosevelt, who rumor has it once bench pressed the White House after an all night bender. A definite must read for anyone who enjoys laughter, and if you don't enjoy laughter, well, there's probably an Ingmar Bergman film festival playing somewhere that would better suit you. But buy this book first anyway. Warning: this book boasts so much awesomeness that just by reading it, you could become pregnant. Even if you're a dude.
A Time for Patriots The main plot revolves around domestic terrorism at the hands of a group of anarchists who have gotten a hold of radioactive material. Their main targets are federal buildings but soon branch out to innocent people in an attempt to bring down the government. When you throw in a group of vengeful FBI agents willing to do anything, in or outside the law, to bring them down, McLanahan finds himself between the two extremes and seemly being targeted by both. The pace builds as the anarchists continue their onslaught on society while the FBI continues theirs on McLanahan, forcing him to begin his own extreme measures to try and bring order back to the area. Again, what I liked was the fast-paced action that starts right from the beginning and rarely lets up. What disappointed me was how unbelievable some of McLanahan's actions became. One example, after two unmanned surveillance drones are presumably shot down by a group calling themselves the Knights of the True Republic, McLanahan sends up his son in an old Cessna with cameras attached to the wings to continue the surveillance. Not really sure if too many fathers would have done that, especially since Bradley had just soloed for the first time a week or so prior. The end of the book is rather forced and rushed but I will say quite satisfying in its resolution. Overall a fairly enjoyable story as long as you aren't looking for strong character development and believability. This is a great book for those weekends where you are just looking for an escape from reality. In that case, I would highly recommend it.
After the Wreck, I Picked Myself Up, Spread My Wings, and Flew Away Jenna's life is divided into before and after the wreck: before she lives with her mother in New York after she's alone and hiding her feelings - until she meets the mysterious Crow, who may be the only person who can understand her trauma and why she's hiding it. A powerful novel of grief and recovery emerges from the telling hand of a long-time novelist who does as good a job for teens as she does for adults.
Bitterroot Billy Bob isn't just a mirror image of Dave, he's much more extreme than Dave. His attraction to violence seems much more ingrained and difficult to overcome, and he spends quite a bit of his time in the book musing about this fact. Sometimes, you just want to whack Billy Bob (or Dave, for that matter) on the head and tell him to stop messing around with the lowlifes, but he just can't seem to help it. And, ultimately, this is what we read Burke for: the battle of good vs. evil.

Black Girl White Girl Oates is covering a lot of territory here: racial prejudice as well as racial entitlement, the family as a base of encouragement or discouragement, the college campus as a microcosm of life and on and on. "Black Girl White Girl" takes us back to that part of Oatesiana called Obsession and though it is not one of Oates' better works it certainly deserves your time being that it comes from one of our finest contemporary writers.
Chill of Night CHILL OF NIGHT is a typical serial killer cat and mouse thriller except that talented John Lutz refreshes the sub-genre with a sense of the terror gripping the city and how much the J-killer debilitates the justice system. The suspense remains in the stratosphere from the moment da Vinci brings out of retirement Beam and never slows down until the final confrontation between the killer and the retired cop ends with a masterful twist that readers will realize afterward was in our face, but brilliantly disguised. Mr. Lutz's fans or anyone who appreciate a tense police procedural will appreciate this high octane thriller.
Cimarron Rose
Despite its flaws, Cimarron Rose is worthwhile not only because of Burke's talents as a wordsmith, but also because of his astute eye for social and class interactions and conflict in his small-town southern setting. His descriptions of the myriad ways in which the affluent "East enders" dominate the small Texas community in which events unfold in this book shows Burke's keen understanding of the sociological and economic as well as psychological aspects of his human subject matter. Clearly, his own sympathies are with the lower classes, the downtrodden, the underprivileged, and the way he skewers the powerful and hypocritical in this book is impressive, indeed.
Counting Up, Counting Down I am a big fan of Turtledove's alt.history work, so I was a bit nervious picking up this book, which is a collection of Turtledove's short stories, of which only a few are alt.history. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. A few stories dragged, but the majority of the pieces were entertaining and skillfully written. Turtledove shows in this collection that he has some additional skills and insights beyond alt.history. I especially enjoyed the "Counting Up" and "Counting Down" stories they were very humane and entertaining. "Goddess for a Day" is another neat little tale with a twist at the end. There is also some fantasy here, and a couple alt.history stories such as the excellent "Must and Shall" which positis a world where the North won the civil war and rather then reconstructing the South, occupied and oppressed it for generations. Anyway, if you are a Turtledove fan, check this book out. Even if you like only half the stories, it is a bargain in paperback.
Cowboy Angels This book is just hands down good. McAuley mixes Ludlum spy-games, Wambaugh police-procedural, pop culture, gee-whiz science fiction, and just plain old-fashioned excellent story-telling to create a fantastic novel. The characters are sympathetic and interesting, with enough back-story and vivid dialogue to make them really come alive and relate to each other like real people. The twists and turns will keep you guessing, and the ending is not to be missed.

Swim Back to Me My favorite of the collection is "Dwell Time" why hasn't Laura's new husband come home yet? Here Packer does an excellent writing job describing Laura's inner-narrative and fights of magical thinking while her worry and dread builds and builds. The final story, "Things Said and Done" ties back to the first story of Richard and Sasha, but I won't reveal how because I wouldn't want to spoil how well Packer unfolds it all for the reader. What I found in "Swim Back To Me" was a wonderful set of interesting, moving, and well written stories.
The Beasts of Clawstone Castle In the story a brother and sister, Madlyn and Rollo, are sent to stay with their kindly Uncle at his "Castle Clawstone" set in the Scottish Highlands. On arrival they find out the dreamy sounding castle is falling apart. The castle is under a huge debt and no funds are available for repair. There are friendly ghosts living in the castle, as well as some rare wild white cattle living on the property and they are at risk if the castle isn't saved. And who is the mysterious being hiding in the library? The siblings have auditions with ghosts to find the best ghosts to scare visitors to complete their plan to turn the castle into a haunted tourist attraction. As usual Ibbotson's ghosts are nutty as they can be including the Bloodstained Bride ,a pair of hairy Scottish feet without a body, a girl cut in half in a magic act, and others. Madlyn turns out to be a natural financial genius and they start making money. But a neighbor has very evil plans for the cattle, and it will take every effort by the siblings and their new alllies to fight back. I highly reccommend!
The Big U Stephenson's novels feature physically unimpressive male protagonists who are nevertheless intelligent, resourceful, and competent at a wide range of technical activities, especially computer programming. These protagonists are often interested in female characters who are their intellectual equals but are also physically attractive. These two classes of characters combined with detailed, tactical action sequences and at least one lavish multi-page description of heavy weaponry epitomize Stephenson's novels. In other words, he writes books for nerds. The Big U is a fun book. I believe that it tanked when it came out in 1984 not so much because of its flaws but because it was ahead of its time: Microsoft and the Internet had not yet entered the public consciousness and books for nerds were just not yet socially acceptable.
The Butcherbird Set in the boardrooms, yachts, and waterfront mansions of Australia's most decadent city, this boisterous thriller investigates corruption and excess in the corporate world. Jack Beaumont, architect turned property developer, is as surprised as the next person when he is approached by insurance tycoon Mac Biddulph to become the new CEO of HOA, the largest home-insurer in Australia. Seduced by power, Jack soon finds that beneath the glamorous facade of the business elite lies a convoluted network of corruption. Out of his depth and pursued by piranhas in a fish tank full of money, Jack must unravel the elusive threads or become ensnared himself. A darkly comic, suspense-filled tale of intrigue, this thriller poses moral dilemmas relevant to corporate sharks of today's business world—and to those left in their wake.
The Cresperian Alliance Look... This is not highbrow entertainment but it is wonderful scifi and for me at least completely entertaining. Wonderful mix of tech and human interaction will a nod to those of us who do believe in a divine God... Read the entire series in a couple of vacation days.

The Dracula Dossier: A Novel of Suspense The book is also highly bizarre, almost to the extreme. As in Dracula, there's no room for subtlety here. The Dracula Dossier is not for the faint of heart there's quite a lot of blood (understatement, perhaps?). The novel opens with Bram walking through the streets of New York with a bloody knife in his pocket, for example. In another scene, Stoker visits the house of the Wildes (parents of Oscar, who makes an appearance here) in London, where Sir William has an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus, complete with mummy, on display in his library. The only criticism I have of it is that it seemed to take a little while to get going: the true story doesn't begin until about halfway through, though there's some great setup beforehand. I'm not sure how much of this novel is fact and how much of it is fiction, but the story is entertaining, certainly. This book is an interesting hybrid of stories: Jack the Ripper and Dracula, of course, and Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White. So as you can imagine, this is a deliciously creepy book.
The Great Ghost Rescue Ibbotson's writing is quirky and full of entertaining puns and poignant moments. Not to mention that over-the-top British style, with an almost conversational feel and plenty of icky moments. The book sags about halfway through, with some rather preachy stretches about vegetarianism and pollution. But when the exorcists show up and the witches are enlisted, things kick back into high gear. Humphrey is reminiscent of the white witch from "Which Witch?" he's supposed to be grotesque, but ends up being cuddly. Rick comes across as a much more solid character, especially when he saves the life of a baby vampire bat. And the other ghosts are a motley bunch, with their own unique complaints and quirks (Humphrey's brother utters bloodcurdling shrieks). "The Great Ghost Rescue" is a fun light fantasy, dripping with humor and ectoplasm. An entertaining if somewhat brief read, for the ghost-lovers out there.
The Last Rain The novel is both fascinating and moving. Dori's mother keeps a diary in which the challenges of feeding a newborn who lives in a communal Children's House are shown to be to some degree insurmountable forced to distance herself from her daughter, the mother begins to refer to her baby as "the girl." A diary kept by a young man on one of the first kibbutzim, in the 1920s, is a revelation. Most prominent, however, is the collective diary of the kibbutz founders, who in stunningly lyrical prose, and with surprising honesty, describe their exuberance as well as their guilt about usurping the inhabitants of what was, until a few months before their arrival, an Arab town.
The Twelve Make no mistake, THE GHOSTS OF BELFAST surpasses its genre. It is a truly stunning debut wrought by a young master of rare talent, insight and truth. No one gets away clean here, including Fegan. I've cut my teeth on the best published works of writers like James Ellroy and Don DeLillo. I have every confidence that young Mr. Neville is superbly capable of joining their ranks in due time. This books'denouement and ending left me stunned, surprised and nearly in tears.
The White Devil This is one of the best gothic horror/ghost tales I've read in many, many years as they usually drag relentlessly toward a disappointing climax. Bravo to the author as there's nothing boring here! The story is quite intelligent, the writing excellent, and the characters are especially wonderful as they actually evolve rather than being unchangeable stereotypes. I stayed up until 5 a.m. reading one night as I couldn't put the book down.

Trial by Fire: A Novel of Suspense Jance is a competent writer who keeps her well-constructed plot moving along briskly. She skillfully depicts her Arizona setting and has created a group of varied and intriguing characters, especially the multilingual Sister Anselm Becker. Sister Anselm is a trained psychologist who works as a patient advocate. The nun's patients look upon her as their guardian angel. However, she can turn into a pit bull when a pushy visitor tries to harm those in her care. The heroine, Ali, is spunky, smart, fearless, curious to a fault, and compassionate. Although there is a minor romantic subplot, it is downplayed. The focus is on the chief suspects: an apparently grieving husband and his two venal and obnoxious stepchildren. Jance's themes are typical for novels of this type: greed, family dysfunction, infidelity, competition among law enforcement agencies, and the media's insatiable appetite for sensationalism. The book's main flaw is its overly complicated and unrealistic ending. Still, "Trial by Fire" should appeal to fans of mainstream thrillers free of profanity and gore.
Web of Evil: A Novel of Suspense Not a bad story........ ......but not the best by Jance by far. I think the blogging and emails do add to the story, but this story just went on too, too long. There is one thing I really take exception to - the reference to Columbine. It had no place in this story. Comparing Ali hiding under a table to those kids hiding under tables was tacky. The kids didn't have a glock with them like Ali did. I live in Colorado. I know kids who were there. The reference to Columbine was in extremely poor taste.
Zombie Zombie repulsed me. The narrator, Quentin P., is loathsome, sick. But in Oates' hands, the brutal serial killer becomes someone we almost know. Oates plunges us into Quentin's world and forces us to acknowledge that his madness is not without its own twisted logic. You see, all Quentin wants is someone in his life he can love and control completely. Zombie's horror is not so much in what Quentin does, but in how he recounts it: He describes his crimes the way my son might talk about his day at school. Zombie is short and taut, more like the novels Oates pens under her pseudonym, Rosamond Smith, than like her longer works. Gruesome, yes, but a compelling read.
Soldiers Live All the things diehard fans demand from a Black Company novel are there, but as Croaker (to my mind, the heart and soul of the Company) sees himself as increasingly remote from the latest incarnation of the Compnay, his feelings on his fallen comrades mirror our own feelings on our favorite vanished characters (Goblin, Silent, Elmo, even the Limper). The ending (if it is truly an END to the Black Company) was, as another reviewer put it, "very disturbing." I agree, but would argue that the ending was perfect, even necessary, for the series, and that it exemplified what it is that makes the Black Company so different from everything else out there, and so worthy of the outlandish affection its fans feel for it.
Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography I certainly didn't expect his book to be more than a compilation of stories about his life in Hollywood but it is more than that. He discusses his parent's divorce, his mother's depression, their financial struggles & his love for his wife & sons. He also gives Outsiders fans a great behind-the-scenes look into the making of that film. He is very candid & exposes himself as a flawed human being like the rest of us. He does discuss other Hollywood pals & tells some great stories but he doesn't make their celebrity the focal point of these tales or his book. A must read for those who loved the movie the Outsiders and anyone who is a fan of Rob's.

Six Graves to Munich Certainly no blockbuster, but definitely a workmanlike effort telling the story of a young man serving as a clandestine intelligence agent near Paris who is captured by the Gestapo on D-Day when transmitting on a secret radio. Taken to Munich with his pregnant wife, he is tortured and interrogated by seven men in an effort to get him to reveal the allies' secret codes. Ultimately, they shoot him and believe he is dead. However, he survives, is treated in VA hospitals, and to some extent recovers. Eventually making a substantial amount of money in the computer industry, he embarks on a journey to exact revenge for what was done to him and his wife. This is the story of how he tracks down his tormentors and his plan to kill them. Recommended.
Slash The story of Guns N' Roses is one of the most controversial in rock n' roll history. GNR has had a famously terse relationship with journalists and authors, and in recent years, former band members have publicly disagreed about the "real story" in the press. The band even threatened bodily harm to journalists in the lyrics of the Use Your Illusion albums! For the first time ever, someone on the inside has gone on record with to describe the genesis of the band, how they wrote and performed one of the most definitive rock albums of all time, the changes in the band's lineup, and finally, the implosion of all things GNR related. Who knew it would be the notoriously private lead guitarist, a softspoken man hidden behind a famous mop of hair, who would step up and tell the story?
Hand of Evil I enjoyed Hand of Evil pretty well, but it's not my favorite of Jance's books. For one thing, the author has to rely on rather flimsy plot devices to involve the main character in the killings. I've always been much more a fan of the plot where the detective involved is actually somehow charged with discovering who the killer is. For one thing, having "a nose for mystery" isn't a substitute for being trained to catch bad guys, and it's also less of a stretch if the person is involved in multiple mysteries over the years. Here we have the character who's involved in what's apparently her third series of violent events in a year or so, and of course it stretches credulity. There's also the issue of Jance's penchant for building characters from book to book. This makes them rather like soap operas, but you can't miss an episode (and I didn't read the first two here). So my opinion is somewhat colored by this fact, and perhaps would be stronger in her favor if I had read them. That being said, this is still a pretty good book, well-written and amusing. I enjoyed it, and would recommend it.
In the Shadow of Swords In the Shadow of Swords is very much a page turner. The action is non-stop and the pacing is frantic. The only quibble I have is the sheer number of scenes and characters introduced throughout the book. I know that the overall scope of the story is on a grand scale, but it just got a little tiresome after a while. However - that is a small gripe. Another aspect that I found interesting was the manner in which the plot is laid out. Rather than jumping back and forth between different characters, you follow one from beginning to end. Everything is then tied together in the end. Ciris Sarn is a sympathetic anti-hero and someone who you would not likely expect to feel for, but you will. Marin Altair is as a strong-willed, independent, and capable female character you will find in a fantasy book as well. Another positive to this story is its very unusual setting. Again most stories in this genre are in a quasi-European style of world and instead we are presented with one draped in Middle-Eastern mythology. I definitely recommend picking this book up, I found it a very entertaining read!

KOP I love the dialogue in this novel. The language, pace, and rhythm of the conversation feels realistic. The story moves along at a rapid pace, but still takes the time to get to know the characters. Most of all, Hammond seems to have some real insight into the way people think and react to various situations. There is a streak of optimism in his writing, even though the situations his characters find themselves in is pretty challenging. In that way, the book is uplifting. I enjoy good crime novels, and I like good science fiction. This is a winner on both counts!
Ex-KOP The combination of hard-boiled detective fiction with Science Fiction is an increasingly popular sub-genre, and EXKOP is an example of how well this can work. Certainly the parallels between Lagarta and third world countries in today's world are obvious. In a couple of places, however, it seemed to me that Hammond took shortcuts. Getting Ian to pay for the decryption Juno needed was clever, but I couldn't understand why Ian would want the files decrypted (or why he never asked for the plain text). I was also expecting a deeper explanation for Ian's transformation from a weak crybaby to the brutal man he became. EX-KOP is strong science fiction. I'll definitely keep my eyes open for more by Hammond.
Lavinia There is depth to this work that I think I will only discover upon re-reading it. And then there are depths that I think I will only discover after re-reading the Aenied. And there are still more depths that are hinted at, glimmers in the darkness, that I may never guess at unless I were to learn more Latin and read the Aeneid in Virgil's own language. That is why I call this novel "masterpiece." If I do not see its like again I will be satisfied to know that some measure of it will go on, as Lavinia has.
Blue Moon: Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter If you are considering trying this out as your first Hamilton novel, get some of the earlier volumes and read those first. Hamilton starts right in the action, and too many of the references will be confusing without some background. Is this a well-written book? Yes. But I think the focus on sex (and I'm not talking missionary position stuff here) weakens Anita's character. Hamilton seems still a bit awkward with this material, but makes up for a lack of slickness with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. Romance fanatics and those who are not put off by a lot of sexuality will no doubt love this book.
Cerulean Sins I love the Anita Blake series and I appreciate how Laurell K. Hamilton has woven the story in such a way that the sex becomes integral to the overall plot itself. As the books progress, the sex becomes more important because it plays a large plot in both the way Anita carries herself and how Anita's abilities function. Every sex scene in Cerulean Sins has a point, whether to show a new physical relationships in Anita's life, or to set up for heartache later, or to make something "magical" happen. There is more sex behind the scenes and I love that Hamilton knew to leave it unwritten. In a storyline like this, sex quickly becomes something akin to eating or drinking. We don't need to know every time a character eats, unless it's important to the story. The same goes for Anita's sex life and Cerulean Sins is right at the edge of that border. Any more sex would have been detrimental to the story.

Collusion Characters are studied, the pace calms, and reflection eases tension. There's a mystery haunting more than one figure we follow, and this increases the interest in their hidden knowledge. The brutality's again here for Neville, but it feels as if there are fewer chases and shootouts, so the sinister atmosphere needs less emphasis. The showdowns may lack a bit of originality and the structure may appear very schematic, but this concentration on streamlining the action works in favor of the momentum. The natural suspense set up runs its own steady course, and the pace seems more controlled. As with Bruen, French, and Black, I predict from the strength of this second novel that Neville's proven himself capable of a great third novel that takes us deeper into the Northern noir to match his Dublin and Galway-based fictional and factual peers in this Celtic noir genre.
Cruel Intent We often hear of the dangers from predators lurking on the internet. Now, prolific mystery writer, J.A.Jance, has written a nicely chilling and satisfying tale of a psychopath stalking women on the web. He uses a web site, singleatheart.com, that attracts married women looking for sex with someone besides their husband. Ex-TV journalist Ali Reynolds (You may have met her in Jance's Hand of Evil, Web of Evil, and Edge of Evil.) becomes interested when the wife of the building contractor restoring her house is brutally murdered. Naturally, the husband is suspected, but Ali does not believe it. She starts snooping, finds the web site, and innocently draws the attention of the psychopath. After that, the story plunges into breathtaking suspense, as the murderer decides that Ali is a threat, and he must find her and kill her. It comes to a great climax in a thoroughly enjoyable story.
Dial-a-Ghost It will appeal to all of the kids going through Harry Potter withdrawal. Oliver Smith is an orphan living happily in a Home. He suddenly finds out that he has inherited a great estate. Unfortunately, he has two evil cousins who also want the estate. They hire two vile ghosts who like to kill children to haunt the house. Unfortunately, there is a mixup at the agency, and the ghostly Wilkinson family take their place, for the time being anyway. This is a really fun read. There are some illustrations, but the author's descriptions are so vivid they are practically unecessary.
Edge of Evil Fired abruptly from her anchor position at a prominent news station for being `too old', Ali Reynolds returns to her home to learn that her best friend is dead - apparently by suicide, over a snowy mountain after a fatal medical diagnosis. Realizing she has no constraints on her time, Ali heads back to her hometown and her parents' Sugarloaf Cafe, where she grew up. Ali has another wonderful discovery on her way to her hometown - her marriage is over. Her husband has been cheating on her for a while, unbeknownst to her but known by most others. So, in the midst of a lawsuit against the station and divorce proceedings, Ali hunkers down in the house she inherited from her aunt, venting her frustrations and problems on a blog that her son has set up for her. Little does she suspect what ball her ruminations will set rolling. A good read, although I did set it down to finish others, first. I suspect there will be more stories with Ali.
Fortress of Spears I enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed the previous two books, the author writes with an easy but compelling style and handles action and character very well. The `brotherhood' of the Roman troops, the banter, loyalty and affection is perfectly blended with the action and a sense of loss when characters we have grown fond of do not make it.

Affinity Let's just say that this novel is about a sad young woman who desperately need to be loved, who is desperately ready to believe in love and who thinks that she had find it while visiting a prison in London, in 1874. This is not a funny or a "feeling-good" book. But Sarah Waters knows how to make you feel, smell, taste and see the life of a woman who would have live 125 years ago. Now I know: Sarah Waters is a great author. Don't read "Affinity" because you think that it is a sex book (it is not). Don't read it because you think Sarah Waters is a lesbian. Read it because it is a great book. The best I've read in a long time.
Alien Tango Alien Tango is a very unique book in regards to romance, suspense and the science fiction element. There were only two things that held me back from giving this a near perfect grade. The beginning is slow and takes time to move things along. Also, the ending is a bit convoluted and rushed. I had the sense that Gini got to a certain point and wasn't sure how to proceed, where she takes a puzzling route that some may scratch their heads over. I was one of them, but when all was said and done, it ended the story in a satisfying way. (Let's just say that Martini channels his inner Hulk)
Arrowhead "Arrowhead" is the fourth installment in the post-apocalyptic world of "The Afterblight Chronicles," a world where a disease that targets everyone but a certain blood type, leaving a nearly wiped out anarchic world. Kane's story is about the French coming into England and taking over the area, and Robert Stokes(an ex-Policeman) takes on the guise of the Hooded Man in order to fight the "Sheriff" of Nottingham. Like others of the series, "Arrowhead" is set in England and has the same tendencies of the other books towards violence and gore. Another great installment in "The Afterblight Chronicles," well-written and a great visual. If you are lacking a good book to read and want a action packed book, this is a good one to pick up.
Being Nikki Cabot does not disappoint with her original and creative mystery sequel to the already fabulous Airhead. Being Nikki succeeds on so many levels and is just such an enjoyable read. Protagonist Em is fun to read about, is witty and sweet, and has such a good heart. Her desires to help people don't stop at her immediate family but extend even to some people who don't even like her. She has such drive and determination that is admirable in her search for the truth. But these qualities are just the basis for a good story. A well written character would be nothing without an equally well crafted plot, like the one Cabot has created in Being Nikki. Cabot appeals to a large audience by offering glimpses into the ritzy life of the rich and famous, the not improbably future of science, technology, and medicine, and the sometimes nefarious activities of the corporately powerful. This leads the reader on a sometimes crazy, sometimes dangerous, and entirely satisfying journey with Em to find the truth behind what started this whole mess. Occasionally, little details and events seem to appear out of nowhere, but overall, this story is easy to follow, making for a fantastically unique, suspenseful, and unpredictable mystery readers won't be able to put down.

Bible of the Dead Horribly plausible plot. Though the book title seems biblical, it is anything but that. Combining the best features of history, archeology, politics and neuro surgery, this book effortlessly straddles 3 continents. A must read-and indeed a chronicle of a modern day Frankenstein-with many twists specially towards the end.
How to Be Lost This is a story about being lost and being found, sometimes without ever leaving home. Beautifully executed, the novel builds precisely to its denouement, a place where choice is inevitable and the past must be put to rest in service of the future. The prose is compelling, the characters as real as my own eccentric family and their dilemmas as familiar as any facing those who encounter tragedy, but must move on. Time is irrevocable but forgiveness is not. There is always a way home.
The Hilliker Curse: My Pursuit of Women I suggest that diehard fans and scholars check out his hour-long interview with Erika that is available on the internet. She tries to deflect attention from their relationship and focus on his writing. At one point she refers to his relationship with Joan as his personal Bay of Pigs. He responds that if that was the case then his relationship with Erika was his personal fall of the Berlin wall. In that moment he was inadvertently summarizing it all: Ellroy as frightened, troubled boy, novelistic colossus, chronicler of America and desperate lover of women all formed into a single, seamless, strange but fascinating whole. Highly recommended.
The Pleasure Seekers
This was a very enjoyable family saga. The story begins with Babo Patel's journey from India to London, where he meets and falls in love with Sian Jones, a Welsh woman. At the request of Babo's family, Sian comes to India where she agrees to remain for two years after their marriage in order to earn the family's approval of their union. What follows is a sweet love story, mixed with the clashing and merging of two very different cultures. Babo and Sian's family grows and changes through the years, but certain threads remain constant. The descriptions of India vividly bring it to life, and the language of the novel is quite beautiful. The author sometimes uses made-up words (for example sha-bing sha-bang for sex) that give the novel a very unique personality. There is a mystical element woven into the novel Babo's grandmother, Ba, can smell people coming to her from hundreds of miles away and appears to have some kind of sixth sense. There isn't really a particular plot to the novel rather, it's a portrait of the evolution of a family over nearly half a century. It's also a look at the theme of having a "foot in each world," and this is represented in many ways throughout the novel.
The Red Wolf Conspiracy A great and entertaining read, this book's tremendous strength is in the comprehensive imagination of a world in all its fascinating detail. Redick gives us a glimpse of the workings of a vast, ravenous Empire reflected in the lives of characters ranging from peace emissary to political operative to near-slave. It reminded me of the experience of reading Dune for the first time, with throwaway details that hint tangentially at complex, fully-imagined institutions. Cumulatively, they yield a sense of a vast society that is at once fantastic and utterly plausible.

The Untouchable Loosely based on the life of British art historian and Soviet spy Anthony Blunt, and with capsule portraits of characters based on Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean, John Banville's "The Untouchable" is a witty and literate, if sometimes overwritten, novel, that never fails to entertain. The question of how a man like Blunt, or, in his present incarnation, Victor Maskell, could betray his country is a sticky one, but here the answer seems to be, quite casually. Maskell never appears to be very comfortable in the role of socialist, except when he's put on the defensive by his mocking
friends, but he is amused by the idea of spying, which dovetails nicely with his personal philosophy of stoicism, as in Seneca, the Roman philosopher who ended his own life after being implicated in a conspiracy against the emperor, Nero. The obvious foreshadowing here is driven home by Maskell's obsession with a picture by Poussin depicting Seneca's suicide, which turns out to be possibly as fake as Maskell himself. Irish by birth, a father and husband, soldier and scholar, Maskell is also a closet homosexual, as well as a distant relation of the Queen. He is a mass of contradictions, who, having been betrayed as a spy and diagnosed as dying from cancer, has begun to wonder what was real and what illusory about his paradoxical life. In the end, he must face up to the ultimate betrayal. In "The Untouchable," Banville offers a perceptive glimpse into the world of those among us who are obliged to lead a double life, sometimes by choice, as in the case of spies, and sometimes not, as in the case of homosexuals. In the final analysis, spy and queer are not that far apart: the glamor and tawdriness, the mystery and banality, and always the backward look over one's shoulder. Victor Maskell may not be the most likeable of protagonists, but he is one of the most complex.
Voltaire's Calligrapher "Voltaire's Calligrapher" has also some memorable action sequences which I greatly enjoyed though its strength lie in its "exoticism in a familiar setting" and of course in the wonderful writing style of the author that is conveyed quite well even in translation. I would have liked the book to be longer since I would have enjoyed spending more time with Dalessius, but the novel does not feel rushed or short in any way. The one slight negative for me was that despite the title, Voltaire appears mostly behind the scenes so we really do not get to see him too much, but Dalesius and his friends and enemies make up for that.
Ascension: A Dark Breed Novel Ascension is categorized as Paranormal Romance, however, it's firmly situated in the Urban Fantasy realm. Do not let the "Paranormal Romance" on the spine scare you off. For one thing, there's no steamy stuff until about two thirds in, and it's no more than you'd find in most urban fantasy. The writing duo that is Sable Grace has created a unique fantasy world where gods and myths are real, and "bump in the night" is par for the course. Some of my favorite scenes include Kyana's roommate and best friend, Haven, who is a witch. Their banter is witty and genuine, and the warmth and history between them is obvious. There are some truly terrifying creatures and plenty of rip roaring action, and the romantic friction between Kyana and Ryker keeps a nice hum of tension threaded throughout. This book has
some wonderful twists and turns that kept me guessing, and a revelation that frankly had my jaw on the floor! This book kicks serious ass, and I can't wait for the next one!
Bad Chili: A Hap and Leonard Novel Then, there's Jim Bob Luke, a professional P.I. who reminded me just a little bit of Steven Seagal in his ability to go in and take out the bad guys in less than thirty seconds with no mercy shown. Mr. Lansdale's writing in BAD CHILI is like a cold Corona going down on a hot Texas day'it makes you sigh with pure happiness when the last drop is finally swallowed. The story has more twists and turns than the Sabine River and, as my late grandpappy would say, the trials and tribulations that Hap and Leonard go through would be enough to make a preacher cuss. BAD CHILI is definitely the real thing. It's the kind of book that adds a strong sense of joy to one's life and makes a reader glad that he's alive to have these kind of experiences. Needless to say, I've already purchased the rest of the books in the series and intend on reading all of them within the next week or so. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Dirt Music If Cloudstreet could be considered as a contender for the'Great Australian Novel' then Dirt Music is something more. Yet it is no less a novel that explores where we as Australians feel at home. Winton creates yet another beautiful male character in Luther Fox, whose attachment to the earth is multifaceted. He hears its resonances in the dirt music he plays and in the ocean where he is comfortable and then most powerfully in his journey north through Western Australia. This novel is a love story that tests boundaries. Georgie, the female protagonist inspires many emotions in us, but we are admire her determination in following Luther and 'saving' him.

Jungle Animal Origami English | 2004 | ISBN: 1402717644 | 96 pages | PDF | 10,2 MB From Booklist Gr. 4-12. Origami master Nguyen offers another title of challenging exercises for nimble paper artists. An introductory section reviews materials and basic folds in clear language and diagrams, but the projects (not rated for difficulty) are intricate constructions of animals that require fairly advanced skills. The book title is misleading as most of the "jungle animals" in the projects actually live in the African savannah, and not all of the finished projects bear an immediate resemblance to the animals they represent. But young people with some paper-folding experience and who are willing to practice will be able to follow the mostly accessible instructions, and they'll enjoy Nguyen's charge to paint, embellish, and personalize their creations to make them more imaginative or realistic: "After all, a zebra without stripes is just a horse." As in his Fantasy Origami (2002), Nguyen enhances the sense of realism with photos of the finished origami animals in natural, grassy habitats. Not a necessary purchase, but useful for serious origami enthusiasts. Gillian Engberg

Simple language, anecdotes, line drawings, and charts describe scientific findings related to parent-child communication. For example, Biddulph highlights the benefits of an extended family and shows how to adapt one's own situation to create one; this segues beautifully into another chapter, which explains that parents should make time for themselves and not become run-down. Some Aussie lingo may confuse American readers such as "I'll bread you!" (meaning to hit). Illustrations greatly enhance the good-humored prose, and the appendix offers tips on how teachers, politicians, relatives, neighbors, and friends can help parents.
