When We Were Heroes While this is the first Wild Cards story I've read, I highly doubt it will be my last, especially if Daniel Abraham keeps writing them . . . His prose is delightful and the stories he creates are always superb...
What My Mother Gave Me: Thirty-one Women on the Gifts That Mattered Most Loved these short stories by awesome lady writers about their moms...thought provoking and warm.Want to share with friends and my own mom!
Vespers Rising (The 39 Clues, Book 11) The final story brings us back to the present with Amy and Dan. I was excited to see Watson taking part in VESPERS RISING. Her two books from the series, BEYOND THE GRAVE and IN TOO DEEP, were two of my favorites. She leads Amy and Dan on a crazy adventure through school, Boston, and then the Swiss Alps. It was interesting to see how Amy and Dan are returning to "normal" life after their globe-trotting, and seeing them interact with Fiske Cahill
was great. My only complaint here is the virtual absence of Nellie Gomez, but the typical 39 CLUES action still made me excited for the upcoming first book in the new series. Six cards in THE 39 CLUES game are included in the front cover, and there is also a secret message to be decoded as usual. The light smattering of illustrations of key events and clues help make this volume just as great as any previous installment.
Till Death Do Us Bark: A Dog Walker Mystery As a dog-lover, I so enjoy this series! The "conversations" between Ellie and the dogs are always entertaining, and in this installment Rudy and Twink are more involved than ever in the investigation Mr. T's commentary at times is priceless. The addition of a crazy bird with a talent for mimicry provides several laugh-out-loud moments (for this reader, anyway!). Ellie and Viv head to the chi-chi Hamptons for the wedding of Viv's sister Arlene. The groom is late for the prewedding party....and is found dead. As the evidence piles up against the son of Arlene's housekeeper, Ellie is pulled out of vacation mode into investigating the murder. Stir in drugs, a mysterious hot man and Viv's family dynamics and you have the makings of some major drama as the case unfolds.
The Whitefire Crossing Schafer creates a believable world full of magic and danger. I especially liked the tension between the two rival countries of Ninavel and Alathia. The delicate balance between Ninavel and Alathia mirrored the complex relationship between Dev and Kiran throughout the novel. It was just a wonderful read and I'm looking forward to the next book in her Shattered Sigil series, The Tainted City. I think you will be too.
The Waiting Game I really enjoyed reading this book. Although it's called The Waiting Game, it's very fast paced. At first, I was frustrated with the characters. Then I realized the totality of the situation, and it flowed perfectly from there. Great character development without the unnecessary infodumps. Suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat. And the right touch of romance. I would definitely recommend this for any lovers of Romantic Suspense.
Virtue of a Governess The character of Nicola Douglas is well-developed and speaks to the plight of young women of the 1860s without family or benefactors to protect them. It was a cruel world and I could feel her desperation and dogged determination to make a life for herself in spite of all odds against her. My favorite character was her friend Meg, a carefree spirit, who adds worry and unexpected joy to Nicola's life. I am a fan of Ms. Brear who does a great job of spinning a story that is captivating and will keep readers intrigued and turning the pages to find out the fate of Miss Nicola Douglas. Fans of historical romance will find this a delightful story of duty, compassion, joy and love. Recommended.
The Vanishing Act There is an underlying melancholy theme throughout the book. Between Minou's complex and troubled father, who was traumatized by a war. The disappearance of her free spirited, artistic mother with a troubled past. The pretzel making Priest and his inability to sleep in the dark. The mysterious Boxman the magician and his lost love named Cosmina.
The Underworld: Fallen Star Series Gemma thought her mind was gone, but she was wrong. And now she is left trying to figure out the truth to what Stephan is planning to do with her and the star, before it’s too late. But finding out the truth is hard, especially since Gemma doesn’t know who she can trust. There may be only one person who Gemma can turn to for answers, but that means having to go to the one place no one wants to go The Underworld.
The Twelve-Fingered Boy THE TWELVE-FINGERED BOY is told in the first person by juvenile delinquent Shreveport "Shreve" Cannon. Shreve's voice is highly unique. He's likable with an edged wisdom that bespeaks his difficult lot in life. For a fifteen year old he's had the majority of his naivety burned away by circumstance but what remains is intelligence and a surprising compassion. Shreve quickly takes to Jack, despite his reluctance to being saddled with fresh blood. Looking back I'm surprised at how little is learned about Jack over the course of the novel. He too, is likable, and the relationship that matures between the two boys is convincing.
The Twelfth Tablet Twelve golden tablets sit in museums around the world, each created by unknown hands and buried in ancient times, and each providing the dead with the route to the afterlife. Each has taken its own journey, and each has its own story to tell. This is one of those stories.
The Temporary Wife Kindergarten teacher Megan Rossi is devoted to being a mother to her best friend’s five-year-old daughter, Molly. When the child was orphaned, Meg became the little girl’s legally named guardian over the objections of Molly’s wealthy grandparents, the Campbells. Now the Campbells are petitioning for custody, and Meg is faced with a long and expensive legal battle. The last thing she expects is for her former high school boyfriend and the Campbells’ estranged son to offer a solution: marriage.
The Tell Beyond the troubled triangle of the protagonists' conflicting needs, Kaplan infuses fine moments of natural grace, notably the unconditional love reflected in the actions of Owen's father, Edward, a reliable sounding board for the couple, his place in the novel an island of respite in the unraveling of the familiar. Kaplan thoughtfully dissects the human struggle, both pathetic and heroic, the history of time and place in honing character, the temptation of bright and shiny things, albeit without substance. Her prose is insightful, raw and memorable, a truly American author who captures the essence of self-doubt and personal failure, leaving all freshly bathed in hope.
The Tattooed Man While Harrigan is facing the demons of his past, Grace is drawn into the investigation through some very unofficial enquiries of her own. Enquiries which will lead to a flashpoint neither can predict.Politics, corruption, big business, espionage and illicit technology ... Alex Palmer weaves them all into a heart-stopping race for the truth.
The Secret Life of James Cook
A fictionalised account of Captain James Cook?s early life, THE SECRET LIFE OF JAMES COOK depicts an imaginative form Cook?s life and ambitions, his naval career in Canada and beyond, and his marriage to Elizabeth and their family life. Drawing on his deep knowledge of the South Pacific and Australasia, novelist Graeme Lay recreates the peerless navigator?s life up to, and including, his first circumnavigation of the world. In particular, Graeme examines the relationship between James and his equally remarkable wife, Elizabeth, the woman he married when he was 34 and she 21, and by whom he had six children, all born while he was away at sea. THE SECRET LIFE OF JAMES COOK also depicts an often-stormy relationship between the dashing and privileged naturalist, Joseph Banks, who accompanied Cook on his first world voyage.
The Silent Oligarch In approximately the first third of the novel, Jones sets up the scenario, and this section of the novel may seem to progress slowly to some readers. It takes careful reading to pick up on the structure and relationships of the corporate world set out in the novel and the minor characters. But Jones accelerates both the action and the tension in the last two-thirds of the book, with the climax and reveal coming quickly and with the ending offering a major surprise. It is, as some early reviews indicate, more of a LeCarre thriller (or Furst) than a Ludlum.
The Plague Dogs
This has got to be the best novel I've ever read, and I've read a lot. It is the sheer quality of Richard Adam's insight and imagination that makes this stand out. Two dogs, Snitter and Rowf escape into the isolation of the wilderness, and from there Adams paints an emotional and stark painting of the two dogs' suffering. Snitter's story of his life with his master is really heart-rending and all the characters are meticulously portrayed. The main complaint about this book is that his prose can get a bit intense at times, and I admit it took a while to get flowing in Adams's narrative. Get past that and you'll come to appreciate the thoroughness and beauty of his writing. In addition to being emotive and suspenseful this is a brilliant attack on animal experimentation and how we (humans) can be so cruel and irrational, and really if you miss this, you miss the book!!
The Scarlet Thief 1854: The banks of the Alma River, Crimean Peninsular. The Redcoats stagger to a bloody halt. The men of the King's Royal Fusiliers are in terrible trouble, ducking and twisting as the storm of shot, shell and bullet tear through their ranks.
The Renegades The bare, mostly quick prose used by Young helps to portray the intensity of the war. The book never lags, always driving forward with suspense and action. Either because of the military jargon or the sheer number of people contributing to a conversation, there were some moments when the dialogue became a bit confusing. I imagine, however, that this confusion may be another form of accurately depicting the intense situations of war. In the end, this novel had no major revelations, but was an entertaining look into the horrors of war and mother nature.
The Red Plague Affair While it's not Lilith Saintcrow's best, the Red Plague Affair is plenty of fun to read (as witnessed by my finishing it in 2.5 hours when I should have been working). This episode starts several years after the first book, opening up some interesting future dilemmas for all involved. Where Red Plage Affair suffers is in giving the impression that it prioritizes setting up the next book over the story at hand, rather like The Empire Strikes Back. However, since many have been calling that the strongest movie of the original Star Wars trilogy, perhaps there is little harm. In any event, grab an iced tea and a hammock, and enjoy this as a summer afternoon read.
The Potty Mouth at the Table We learn a lot about Laurie. She does not like to share a bath puff. She would rather give birth in public than throw up in front of people. She has serious addictions to buying fabric and second-hand furniture. She has little patience for foodies and vegans, but don't you dare take donuts from her secret stash. Her husband makes cameo appearances as the long-suffering partner. I wouldn't mind hearing a bit more from him. Life with Laurie sounds like it must be a constant, outrageous adventure!
The Orpheus Descent Today, twelve golden tablets sit in museums around the world, each created by unknown hands and buried in ancient times, and each providing the dead with the route to the afterlife. Archaeologist Lily Barnes, working on a dig in southern Italy, has just found another. But this tablet names the location to the mouth of hell itself.
The Peculiar Don't get yourself noticed and you won't get yourself hanged. In the faery slums of Bath, Bartholomew and his little sister Hettie live by these words. Bartholomew and Hettie are Peculiars, and neither faeries nor humans want anything to do with them. But when Peculiars start showing up in London murdered and covered with red tattoos, Bartholomew breaks all the rules and gets himself noticed. Full of magic, dazzling inventions, and intriguing characters such as Mr. Jelliby and Lord Lickerish, this story of friendship, bravery, and nonstop action adventure was hailed by best-selling author Christopher Paolini as "swift, strong, and entertaining.
The Nosferatu Scroll Very cool, great fast paced story line that I just just couldn't put down. Loved it, definately reccommend to action adventure readers...
The Midas Code Boyd Morrison has produced an airport novel that achieves an aim of wasting time on a flight in enjoyable action and derring-do. Unfortunately, it's way too close to Andy McDermott (who does it better) in characterisation and style. A case of "already done" which limits the impact this might otherwise have had. Still, the glut of these novels out there haven't touched on Midas yet so it was interesting to see how Morrison has myth meet science in a manner that is plausible for the reader - which is key to enjoying the novel. Tyler Locke is a suitable hero for the novel Stacy Benedict may not reappear - but if she does, she needs to be less Nina Wilde.
The Medusa Amulet Great characters, terrific pacing, and a riveting plot make this a page-turner in the very best sense. The story charges between past and present, with the time periods cleverly connected through the mysterious amulet. Historical anecdotes and art history are smart background to a novel that moves forward at breakneck speed. The author has a light touch with supernatural elements, making them integral to the story without ever feeling forced. The novel is grounded in facts about the artist Cellini and the author's deep knowledge and intelligence shine through at every turn. The hero David Franco is compelling and his emotions seem real, making this a great read for everyone. Masello has become one of the very best writers in this genre. Can't wait for his next.
The Mayan Resurrection After sacrificing himself to prevent mankind's extinction, Michael Gabriel is imprisoned in a torturous, purgatory-like dimension in the Mayan netherworld. The Mayan prophecy states that the Hero Twins his sons Jacob and Immanuel, born to his wife Dominique the year after his entrapment will travel to the Mayan realm in their twentieth year to free and resurrect him. Jacob, blessed with staggering intelligence and almost superhuman attributes, lives to embrace this destiny. Immanuel, on the other hand, fights the path chosen for him, opting to live a normal life. Yet this struggle is not all that threatens their destiny: born the same day as the twins is a purely malevolent force, The Abomination the evil yin to their yang that will not stop until it they succumb to its temptation. The war between good and evil wages on, as Michael Gabriel's fate, and that of planet Earth, hangs by an increasingly thin thread. Traversing worlds, millennia and space-time continuums, the second of the Mayan series captures the imagination like few books can, making it as much of a rip-roaring page-turner as its predecessor and preparing the series for an explosive climax.
The Magdalena Curse Very intricately created web of connections....everything is a clue, every step in a person's life has led him/her to this point. Cottam creates an atmosphere you can't shake off, and characters you want to stay with. This is a fascinating story, and the author is an exceptional storyteller.
The Jackal's Share Author Chris Morgan Jones writes well, although the ending of this book was rather weak. I still found it engrossing enough to make it a high priority to finish... what was going to happen? Probably a good beach book for the summer.
The Lantern Rotating perspective between past and present, readers have a haunting gothic thriller using the beautiful French countryside and the creation of perfume as counterpoints to the growing fear of something bad about to occur. Although the cast in both eras are somewhat thin, readers will enjoy this suspenseful tale as Eve's suspicion that she may not next grows.
The Innocence Game It is well-written, it does have lots of plot twists and turns and the ending isn't what you'd imagine. Based on that objective standard, I'd give FOUR STARS to THE INNOCENCE GAME. On the other hand, I don't think I'd really recommend it. As entertainment, I'd only give it TWO STARS. Just way too dark, dreary, disturbing and depressing. Averages out to a non-commital THREE STARS. If you're looking for an escape from reality, steer clear!
The Human Division The book comes with 2 short stories, in addition to the ones released as episodes. "After the Coup" had previously been released on it's own. The other is a new one, for now available only by buying this book, "Hafte Sorvalh Eats a Churro and Speaks to the Youth of Today." Neither are particularly essential to the plot of the book, but they do give a new perspective on some of the characters. After the Coup was the initial spark for The Human Division, following a similar by-the-seat-of-their-pants diplomatic mission with the same cast of characters. While the Hafte Sorvalh one shows off a bit more of a character that Scalzi has said is one of his favorites. It also gives us an interesting insight into how people (particularly children) on Earth are reacting to the recent influx of aliens on diplomatic missions.
The India Fan
Victoria Holt writes with such vivid detail and clarity, that the book plays more like a movie than the written word. Her elegant prose evokes emotion with every turn of the page. The storyline is incredibly full and touches on themes such as social class, love, forgiveness, duty, poverty, and loss as it sweeps the reader from the elegance of England into the exotic wilds of India. If you've never read a Victoria Holt novel before, then you must start with this one. It's unputdownable.
The Guardian (Volume 1) There is a boy who has fragmented memories from a car accident that he lost his girlfriend in in these dreams he starts to see a female vampire that pulled him from the wreck and feels such a strong connection that he found her in Europe and now the ancients want to kill both of them for their connection, because it gives him certain powers and gifts they fear.
The Goblin King Heather is a great author.. once you start on this series you can't put it down! This latest book in the series does not disappoint. I am only saddened that I have to wait for the next one to be pulled out from the genius brain of hers! This book has it all.. danger, love, supernaturals, fae, hot men, suspense and laughter! I would love to go into detail, but then I would give too much away! You have to read it on your own. I tell everyone if you want a great read.. READ THIS SERIES!!!!!!!
The Fall of Arthur While it is certainly cause for regret that Tolkien never found time to finish The Fall of Arthur, Christopher makes clear in "The Unwritten Poem" that elements from this unfinished work found expression elsewhere, so that Avalon eventually became Tol Eressea, for example. Perhaps the most valuable gift this publication of The Fall of Arthur can give us is this glimpse into Tolkien's creative imagination. Arthur, Gawain, Guinever, and Lancelot at first glance appear to have little in common with Earendil, or Beren and Luthien, or certainly Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, but as we read this poem and the accompanying material we can recognize anew and be thankful for their common source.
The Eighth Court The Eighth Court has been established, but petty rivalries and old disputes threaten its stability. The mongrels that make up the court are not helping, and Blackbird enlists the help of the warders to keep the peace.
The Dead Man's Brother This book, THE DEAD MAN'S BROTHER, was a joy to discover because it's 100% Zelazny. It must have been an unpublished manuscript, recently unearthed, or archived and not intended for publication. No matter what the circumstances, any longtime Roger Zelazny fan will instantly recognize it as his work, and no other.
The Constant Heart What does it mean to be a decent man? To love well, with fidelity and constancy? These are the lessons that Jake’s father, a wildlife biologist, tries to impart to his son, often on fishing trips to their beloved Furnace Creek. Bound up in the laws of Einstein’s theories, these lessons will ultimately influence Jake’s own career as an astronomer. Out on the creek, both father and son conquer their greatest challenges: marital infidelity, professional setbacks, and Jake’s long term, passionate obsession with his childhood crush.
The Colony This was a good spooky book without being horrifying. If you are looking for something with decent characters and an interesting plot without it being TOO gruesome, this will probably work for you.
The Blue Fox This novel is about the hunting of a blue fox. What is a blue fox? That's for the reader to discover. Obviously, it IS a fox, but its significance in this wonderful tale is what makes the book so fascinating. The harsh day to day landscape of Iceland, the harshness of life itself, the pain of existence, the journeying, the methods of survival - but that suggests this is an 'adventure' novel. It's not, at least not in any ordinary sense of that word. It is an adventure into the self, into the soul of the human faced with the loneliness of existence and the quest for what is essential. It is also beautifully, tightly, succinctly, poetically written.
Take, Burn or Destroy But the enemy has been lying in wait for him, and so begins a dangerous chase out into the Atlantic and into the clutches of a powerful French squadron. After a thwarted attempt to masquerade as French sailors, Hayden and his officers are taken prisoner. A shipwreck following a storm and a case of mistaken identity befall Hayden and his men, as they try in desperation to escape in order to warn the Lords of the Admiralty. Failure will mean the invasion of England and the guillotine for Hayden.
Terms of Enlistment
The mercenary attitude of the protagonist is refreshing, not gritty or jaded but honestly working hard to scramble up out of poverty. The action sequences are well written and manage to convey crappy orders that grunts execute because that is just how the system works.
Supernatural: Carved in Flesh All in all it was a fantastic read, overall I wasn't disappointed and it was a definite page turner. This one I am rating high and recommending to anyone interested in the SPN Series.
Someone to Watch Over Me I love Yrsa's work, especially for the way in which her main character, attorney Thora Gudmundsdottir, defends a client. In her investigations into the case she solves a murder that happened very recently, as well as a murder somewhere in the history of Iceland, even if it's only two years ago. As someone said, it combines LAW AND ORDER and COLD CASE with NORTHERN EXPOSURE! The modern Icelandic society is depicted as well: in this latest novel, the characters all have to contend with the fall-out of Iceland's economic implosion.
Sun, Sand, Sex Jennifer Apodaca's story "You Give Love A Good Name" was very sexy and entertaining. THANK YOU for writing a female who is independent but not afraid to ask for help. Thank you for writing an Alpha male who also respects the strengths of others, particularly females. These were characters I liked immediately.
So Hard to Say A peripheral character for most of the story is Iggy, another boy at Frederick's school who is rumored to be gay. Frederick overhears how others talk about Iggy and watches as they treat him like an outcast, so his own initial reaction is one of keeping a wary distance. All the same, he is fascinated by Iggy's dimpled smile and feels mysteriously drawn to him. What keeps him from acting on those feelings is mainly the fear of being thought of as gay himself.
Silver I love Wicked Woods and Shimmer for all the action and romance. I fell in love with Fallon in Wicked Woods, but Kevin stole my heart in Shimmer. Now I'm not sure who I love. I thought Shimmer was my favorite because of the werewolf world was so fascinating. I want more of the werewolf king's story and his family's connection to the Mayflower. Hope we get more of him. Silver has so many layers, it is now my favorite in the series. Because of the way George and the preservation society ended in Shimmer, Silver makes Sophie and Briony question what is wrong and right. I never thought what was coming with Briony or Sophie.
Shattered Trident This is an absolutely extraordinary book. It combines an in-depth knowledge of high-tech weaponry from multiple countries with a plausable political scenario that is engrossing. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Even the characters are well developed with clear insights into their personalities and humanity as the war claims lives. This is a book that so far exceeded my expectations that I wanted to write this review to encourage others to read it also. I love this kind of book but they aren't all created equal and this book clearly was clearly thought-through at every step. Congratulations to the authors for creating something special.
Shadow Grail #3: Sacrifice A really good read. The authors do a great job of juxtaposing a scary theme and the ordinary angst of adolescents. They also do a nice job with the metaphor of magical gifts as means of self-actualization. Legacies has enough action for reluctant readers, and enough character development for teens to see themselves in this group of friends. The book’s fans are sure to eagerly await Spirit’s discovery of her mage gift and further confrontations with the forces of evil.
Shades of Shame (Semper Fi) I have ADD and it takes me forever to finish a book. I am so involved in this book I missed the Dexter marathon last night. I should be finished this weekend!! I can't wait to read some of this authors other books.
Scowler This is third Daniel Kraus novel I've read and the guy just keeps on getting better and better. Yes, this is a dark book, but it is so powerfully written, I could not put it down. I have serious author envy! I just wish the author would write faster.
Revelations There are plenty of interesting characters and a top notch mystery that kept me flipping the pages, I found this a book that I couldn't put down and even though its 464 pages I found myself zooming through it to get to the conclusion, and speaking of conclusions the author certainly left me anxious to see what is going to happen for Jane Perry in the next book in the series! While this book is the third in a series I feel like the author gives us enough background information that it can easily be read as a stand alone work, but this is such a great series that I highly recommend reading it in its entirety!
Retribution In trying to stop a series of experiments designed to turn soldiers into mindless killing machines, SSU agent Rafe Andros is captured and forced to undergo the transformation himself. His only hope lies in the hands of beautiful scientist Gabby Montague, whose research helped strengthen the program that has turned him into little more than a raging beast.
Rasputin's Bastards In Rasputin's Bastards David Nickle gives us a Soviet cold war psychic program, giant squid, Russian folklore, a secret submarine base, sensory deprivation tanks, brainwashing programs and so much more. The mysteries of the plot pull you along. It's not really spoiling anything to say that almost no one in the book is who they think they are (this is strongly implied fairly early in the proceedings). The book follows an assortment of characters as they unravel their true identities (and abilities) while confronting a world-devouring entity.
Real Vampires Don't Wear Size Six When life is going well for Gloriana St. Clair (better known as Glory to her vampire friends) you know trouble is just around the corner. In this case, trouble starts when the Vampire Council orders Glory to shut down her store Vintage Vamp's Emporium because it's attracting too much attention from the outside world. Her personal life has also gone to hell in a handbasket literally. Her on again-off again relationship with yummy Vampire Jeremy Blade goes South when he learns that Glory had a fling with her former bodyguard Valdez while she was possessed by a demon. Could matters possibly get worse?
Prescription for Chaos I read most of thses stories in the late 50s and early 60s. There were several I had not. Christopher Anvil was one of the best practioners of comic Sci-Fi and all of these are fun to read. In fact I found myself chuckling a lot. The characters are stereotypes but their interactions are what makes the fun.
Phoenix After reading damned and tell all I was ready to give up on chuck. I had previously read all of his work and truly enjoyed it. His last two books were a let down for me.
This is a breath of fresh air in terms of tone and story telling. The setting was perfect for the length. I would highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys his work but might be ready to stop.
My Soul to Keep Melanie Wells simply gets better and better with each new installment, and it's a shame more people aren't noticing. All three of the books in this series are an absolute joyride that fans of suspense and mystery will love. If you are a fan of Melanie Wells than you already know what a treat you are in for with this one. For those who are late to the game, there is no better time to start than now.
Master of Shadows This was a quick and sensual read. I really liked Belle. She is independent and doesn't let Tristan push her around! I also liked how comfortable Belle is with her sensuality! In contrast, Tristan seems aloof but he hides his deep passion. When the two main characters finally `get together' it is scorching. I liked how the author explores Davon's point of view. Davon is a doctor and a healer but not a destroyer. He is tortured by the knowledge that he has killed an innocent even if he was manipulated magically. I also liked reading about Miranda. She is on the run. A good person/werewolf, that happens to have an evil and blood thirsty father but fights against being a victim. This book also explores how Belle and Tristan each have their own backgrounds and how each of their friends try to warn or prevent their relationship from progressing because they fear the other person will hurt them. Both characters have issues and are lonely souls that actually have a lot in common. I enjoyed their developing relationship. The storyline is very involving and easy to read. As the characters grow and familiar ones return, the depth of the Mageverse keeps expanding. I also liked that this book wraps up tightly and I hope to read more about Davon and the intriguing witch Miranda! Magical and seductive this is already one of my favorites in the Mageverse series.
Man in the Empty Suit Man in the Empty Suit also addresses the need to connect with other people. The traveler attends the party every year so that he can be with himself (literally), but he's always alone, fighting to be heard in a chorus of identical voices. Both the traveler and Lily deal, in their different ways, with the burden of expectations, although the traveler's are selfimposed.
Loki's Wolves This book is full of Norse mythology, which is fascinating. The characters are endearing and the action is fast paced. I recommend this book to everyone, child and adult alike. You will not be able to put it down.
Learning to Dance Judith is suddenly all alone in the world. Her husband, Jack, has left her why, she doesn't really know. Her two sons are in Australia, and both her mother and her best friend Naomi have recently died. Embarking on a journey to Exmoor to meet the famous artist Robert Haussman, with an oddly assorted group of fellow-enthusiasts, Judith finds herself a prey to all sorts of irrational fears. Chief amongst them is the increasing conviction that Jack is dead. Why did he leave her? Where has he gone? And why does Robert Haussman exert such a strange influence on her?
Kinetics Although this book was different in it's handling of "super" powers, I thought that not only it's originality but it's storyline made it one that I will look forward to reading it's sequel.
In Darkness We need more young adult literature about Haiti. This is a country that is frequently in the news for tragedies, yet there is a dearth of narratives that encourage a personal connection with the people being affected. When teaching a unit on Haitian immigration to Bahamian students, we read Frances Temple's Taste of Salt, but that was the only fiction text that was available for middle school readers. In Darkness is for older readers the violence is explicit and the dead-end lives of the residents of the Site Soley slums weigh heavily on the reader. The publication of Lake's novel will hopefully only be the beginning of a wave of novels informing readers about life in modern Haiti.
Gray Justice The quick pace and rhythm of the story keeps on moving and turning in really unexpected ways, making the story so enthralling and making impossible for the reader to put the book aside. Very interesting story, quite close to the reader since we live through similar stories every day: through the news, TV, and in our cities. A wonderful story of a desolate man who loses his family and chooses to do something to change the world where he lives in.
Good Luck, Fatty?! It was a book I will read again and again.I thought I would hate it but I just couldn't' t put it down..
For Love or Money This is a very compelling romantic suspense that has some humour to lighten things up. The h/h who had been engaged in college reconnect when he is the detective investigating the death of an acqaintence of the female lead character's. There is a lot of anger between them, but also a lot of chemistry and supressed passion which is always fun. The story is fast paced, the other characters are well described and often lend a little comedy into serious situations. The mystery is interesting and makes the book hard to put down as things keep happening and the reader's interest never flags. All in all, a great read, highly recommended to readers who like to be entertained.
From the Mouth of the Whale From the Mouth of the Whale is an Icelandic saga for the modern age. The year is 1635. Iceland is a world darkened by superstition, poverty, and cruelty. Men of science marvel over a unicorn’s horn, poor folk worship the Virgin in secret, and both books and men are burned.
Female Friends A group of women caught up in the special problems of womanhood seek to establish their own values.
Dirge for a Necromancer As an avid reader I found "Dirge for a Necromancer" to be one of the most exciting books that I've read in a very long time. Its full of adventure and excitement. The twists and turns of an adventure unparalleled by any other. If your a dark fantasy junky, you will love 'Dirge for a Necromancer". Put 'Dirge" at the top of your list today !
Dark Light of Day The romance in the book is a perfect distraction, but doesn't overshadow the main narrative. There is a lot going on throughout the book and I'm glad that there were some storylines left open for the rest of the series to explore. Overall, I found this to be a fantastic first novel in a great new urban fantasy series that readers won't be able to get enough of.
Deadly Sins This exhilarating Mindhunter romantic suspense (see Deadly Intent and Deadly Dreams) is a terrific thriller that contains too many subplots to keep track of but as they merge together into a strong entry fans will marvel at Kylie Brant's delightful juggling. Adam and Jaid are a wonderful second chance couple, but neither lose sight of taking down the brilliant mastermind behind the killings. Filled with twists, Deadly Sins is a superb cat and mouse police procedural.
Danger in Plain Sight This is a strong romantic suspense (see Vanish In Plain Sight) as readers see how the Amish deal with a police investigation that takes the "Englischer" former marine turned cop and the photojournalist deep into the community. Filled with tension and several deft twists re the motive, Marta Perry provides a fabulous whodunit (and why).
Code White The surgery proceeds while things start to happen outside the OR. Readers are introduced to the delightful Harry Lewton, the hospital's chief of security. Harry brings common sense and compassion to his job, getting not only the reader's affection but better results than the rigid FBI agent who arrives at the hospital along with the bomb threat. For the first half of the book, some mystery hangs over the nature and source of the bomb threat. This mystery is dispelled rather early in the story. The author must rely on other sources of tension to keep the reader engaged.
Codename Prague Wilson's writing doesn't just have a grasp of language. It has a death grip on it, and combined with his ideas of future society, what you're left with is an action packed skewering of culture, capitalism, and technology. There's a futuristic rendition of "Cats". There are fight scenes with Bruce Lee clones. Hell, there are clones of EVERYBODY. Like all of Wilson's fiction, this one's a trippy exercise in strangeness and style, written by a sociopath who's read a metric ton of cyberpunk. It's an amusement park of ultraviolent insanity that, much like the ideas behind cyberpunk, might just come true someday.
Brodmaw Bay Bringing together a Britain both modern and quaint - exploring the dichotomy between the two, druid lore of the past that reaches into the future always seeking for renewal and "fresh blood" to sustain well being fueled by evil, and the ghostly apparition of a young girl looking for revenge against the people who perpetrated her murder in a horrid sacrifice nearly a century previous. The writing and pacing are flawless, there's no usual horror schlock here, a slow building sense of dread that culminates in a climax that's both as horrific and thrilling as any I've read in quite a while.
Bravo Jubilee Summer 1977: It’s no holiday in the sun in Handstead New Town, a north Manchester overspill. Known to the local cops as Horse’s Arse, it’s preparing to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. But lob-in soccer violence, rampant police hooliganism, and an expanding LSD market—there’ll be a riot going on. Local gangster Sercan Ozdemir has underestimated DCI Harrison, head of the CID blood on the floor in an interview room is all in a day’s work for him. And Ozdemir knows that if his crime family discovers he’s been doing his own thing, they’ll pull his face off. Meanwhile the uniform cops, Psycho, Pizza, the Brothers, Ally, and the others hurl the rule book out of the window and continue to hold the tide of criminal scum at bay for as long as they can in a town they despise.
Black Ships This is one of those novels whose three dimensional characters grow on the reader to the point that finishing the book is like watching old friends disappearing around the bend. Though Black Ships tells of the many adventures these refugees encounter in their wanderings, real excitement comes from watching as the main characters struggle to find their path - sometimes relying on faith in the whispers of gods sometimes by trusting their own judgement.
Big Jack Is Dead
Big Jack is Dead is a soulful novel of self-discovery written in clear language that carries the reader from one emotional page to the next. Harvey Smith takes an unblinking look at small-town rural Texas, a place you will know uncomfortably well after reading his book. I only hope that this haunting debut novel is not his last. A great read.
All the Way Round In 2010, Stuart Trueman set out on a 16-month voyage to circumnavigate Australia by kayak. He wasn't the first person to complete the circumnavigation, or even the second – but he was determined to make it a triumphant third. Stuart's adventure was to be done on a shoestring, with no support team and a powerful belief in the philosophy of Do-It-Yourself, albeit with the kindness and help of the many people he met along the way. This single-handed journey would see him face extraordinary challenges, including the non-stop crossing of mighty 200-kilometre cliff formations, huge seas, dangerous surf, sleeping whales, inquisitive sharks, large crocodiles and the sheer, relentless grind of paddling day in and day out all around Australia's massive coastline.
Against the Wall The passion between Jack and Sophie is only a small part of the story, the other characters where just as engaging and I trully can't wait to read about them more, it's a close knit community and I can see the potential for some of them to become important later in the series. Jack's family gave me a few giggles and I can't wait to find out more about his brother's although Hawk has captured my interest.
A Dreadful Murder Even though this book is written in simple language and designed to be read by people who may not read very much I still found enough in the story to keep me reading. It is an intriguing mystery and it is up to the reader to make up their own minds about who did it. If you want a quick read which is part fiction and part non-fiction then give this a try.
34 Pieces of You This book reminds readers that every link in the chains that form the emotional bonds that we need in life is important. When Ellie breaks her chain, the weaknesses created by the loss of her strength allow all the inner demons in the lives of those she loved and that her presence kept at bay, to reek unchecked havoc in their lives.

I'll See You Again 2013 | ISBN-10: 1451674775 | EPUB, MOBI | 288 pages | 3,6 MB
In a powerful and intimate memoir, Jackie Hance shares her story of unbearable loss, darkest despair, and—slowly, painfully, and miraculously—her cautious return to hope and love. Until the horrific car accident on New York State’s Taconic Parkway that took the lives of her three beloved young daughters, Jackie Hance was an ordinary Long Island mom, fulfilled by the joyful chaos of a household bustling with life and chatter and love. After the tragedy, she was “The Taconic Mom,” whose unimaginable loss embodied every parent’s worst nightmare. Suddenly, her life-long Catholic faith no longer explained the world. Her marriage to her husband, Warren, was ravaged by wrenching grief and recrimination. And her mind, unable to cope with the unfathomable, reinvented reality each night, so she awoke each morning having forgotten the heartbreaking facts: that Emma, age 8; Alyson, age 7; and Katie, age 5, were gone forever. They were killed in a minivan driven by their aunt, Jackie’s sister-in-law, Diane Schuler, while returning from a camping weekend on a sunny July morning. I’ll See You Again chronicles the day Jackie received the traumatizing phone call that defied all understanding, and the numbed and torturous events that followed—including the devastating medical findings that shattered Jackie to the core and shocked America. But this profoundly honest account is also the story of how a tight-knit community rallied around the Hances, providing the courage and strength for them to move forward. It’s a story of forgiveness, hope, and rebirth, as Jackie and Warren struggle to rediscover the possibility of joy by welcoming their fourth daughter, Kasey Rose Hance. The story that Jackie Hance shares for the first time will touch your heart and warm you to the power of love and hope.
VJ: The Unplugged Adventures of MTV's First Wave 2013 | ISBN-10: 1451678126 | EPUB, MOBI | 336 pages | 4 MB MTV’s original VJs offer a behind-the-scenes oral history of the early years of MTV, 1981 to 1987, when it was exploding, reshaping the culture, and creating “the MTV generation.” Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, and Martha Quinn (along with the late J. J. Jackson) had front-row seats to a cultural revolution—and the hijinks of music stars like Adam Ant, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, and Duran Duran. Their worlds collided, of course: John Cougar invited Nina to a late-night “party” that proved to be a seduction attempt. Mark partied with David Lee Roth, who offered him cocaine and groupies. Aretha Franklin made chili for Alan. Bob Dylan whisked Martha off to Ireland in his private jet. But while VJ has plenty of dish—secret romances, nude photographs, incoherent celebrities—it also reveals how four VJs grew up alongside MTV’s devoted viewers and became that generation’s trusted narrators. They tell the story of the ’80s, from the neon-colored drawstring pants to the Reagan administration, and offer a deeper understanding of how MTV changed our culture. Or as the VJs put it: “We’re the reason you have no attention span.”
Country Girl: A Memoir 2013 | ISBN-10: 031612270X | EPUB, MOBI | 368 pages | 3,2 MB In 1960, Edna O'Brien published The Country Girls, her first novel, which so scandalized the O'Briens' local parish that the book was burned by its priest. O'Brien, married with two sons, was undeterred and has since created a body of work that bears comparison with the best writing of the twentieth century. Country Girl brings us face to face with a life of high drama and contemplation. It is a rich and heady accounting of the events, people, emotions, and landscape that imprint upon and enliven one lifetime. Starting with O'Brien's birth in a grand but deteriorating house in Ireland, her story moves through convent school to elopement, divorce, single-motherhood, the wild parties of the '60s in London, and encounters with Hollywood giants, pop stars, and literary titans. There is love and unrequited love, and the glamour of trips to America as an acclaimed writer hosted by Jackie Onassis and Hillary Clinton. Brilliant and sensuous, Country Girl is a book we are fortunate that Edna O'Brien decided to write.
Obsessed: America's Food Addiction - and My Own 2013 | ISBN-10: 1602861765 | EPUB, MOBI | 256 pages | 3,4 MB Mika Brzezinski is at war against obesity. On Morning Joe, she is often so adamant about improving America’s eating habits that some people have dubbed her “the food Nazi.” What they don’t know is that Mika wages a personal fight against unhealthy eating habits every day, and in this book she describes her history of food obsession and distorted body image, and her lifelong struggle to be thin. She believes it’s time we all learned to stop blaming ourselves, and each other, and look at the real culprits—the food we eat and our addiction to it. Mika feels the only way to do this is to break through the walls of silence and shame we’ve built around obesity and food obsessions. She believes we need to talk openly about how our country became overweight, and what we can do to turn the corner and step firmly onto the path of health. So Mika made a deal with her very close friend Diane: they would work together on this book and on their personal goals, to help Diane drop 75 pounds and to break Mika’s obsession with staying superthin. As she did in her bestseller Knowing Your Value, Mika has packed each chapter with insights from notable people in medicine, health, business, the arts, and politics. Singer Jennifer Hudson, the late writer and director Nora Ephron, TV host Gayle King, New Jersey governor Chris Christie, and many others open up to Mika about their own challenges and what works for them when it comes to food and diet. It’s time we stopped whispering the F-word (“fat”) the way we used to shun the C-word (“cancer”). This book—with its trademark Brzezinski smarts, honesty, and courage—launches us into a no-holds-barred conversation with family and friends, in schools and kitchens, in Congress and the food industry, to help us all find ways to tackle one of the biggest problems standing between us and a healthier America.
The Real McCaw: The Autobiography Of Richie McCaw 2013 | ISBN-10: 1781310335, 1781310459 | MOBI | 416 pages | 9 MB Richie McCaw is the New Zealand All Blacks’ most capped player of all time. During the 2011 World Cup he reached 100 caps and has played over 60 Tests as Captain. When the All Blacks beat France in Final, he crowned a ten year career that started with a man-of-the-match performance against Ireland in 2001. Unquestionably the greatest player of his generation, he is arguably the most talented rugby player of all time. In his autobiography, McCaw recounts for the first time, with brutal honesty, the roots of his family life that defined his character – learning to play the game on the family farm in South New Zealand and being inspired to fly gliders by his war-hero grandfather – and how it gave him the strength to emerge from the lowest moment in his career to become the most successful Captain world rugby has ever seen. Unafraid of playing the game right at the edge and putting his body on the line for his team mates, McCaw has set the standard of what a professional rugby player should be. Hugely popular and respected, his sheer presence means that he is a natural leader of men both on and off the pitch and his story is not just a brutal account of life on the front line, but an exhilarating portrait of modern rugby.
Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life and Legacy as the Duck Commander 2013 | ISBN-10: | EPUB, MOBI | 336 pages | 3,1 MB LIVING THE DREAM Duck calls—though the source of his livelihood—are not what makes Phil Robertson the man he is today. When asked what matters in his life, he’s quick to say, “Faith, family, ducks—in that order.” It isn’t often that a person can live a dream, but Phil Robertson, aka The Duck Commander, has proven that it is possible with vision, hard work, helping hands, and an unshakable faith in the Almighty. Phil’s is the remarkable story of one man who followed the call he received from God and soon after invented a duck call that would begin an incredible journey to the life he had always dreamed of for himself and his family. In the love of his country, his family, and his maker, Phil has finally found the ingredients to the “good life” he always wanted. If you ever wind up sitting face-to-face with Phil, you’ll see that his enthusiasm and passion for duck hunting and the Lord is no act—it is truly who he is. The Call of the Wild If you’ve watched the exceedingly popular A&E program Duck Dynasty, you already know the famed Phil Robertson. As patriarch of the Robertson clan and creator of Duck Commander duck calls, he fearlessly leads his family in a responsible work ethic and an active faith. But what you don’t know is his life before the show. In the pages of this book, you’ll learn of Phil’s colorful past and his wild road to the “happy, happy, happy” life he leads today. Before the “happy,” Phil’s passion for the outdoors and wild living led him down some shady paths. As a young husband and father, he became the proprietor of a rough bar and lived a life, as he says, of “romping, stomping, and ripping” for a number of years. He even left his wife and young boys for a short period of time. Through it all, Phil Robertson has lived his life as a “called” man. Called to live off the land, called to leave a starring role in Louisiana Tech football (playing ahead of Terry Bradshaw) for duck hunting, called to wild living, called to create a new kind of duck call—and finally, called to follow God and lead a life of faith. In this eye-opening and rousing book, you’ll find stories that will shock you, as well as those that will inspire you. You’ll get to know the man behind the legend, and you’ll come away better for it.

My Dog: The Paradox: A Lovable Discourse about Man's Best Friend English | ISBN: 1449437524 | 2013 | EPUB | 32 pages | 7,6 MB Matthew Inman dishes another helping of hilarity from his online comic The Oatmeal in My Dog: The Paradox. After years of carefully observing his own dog, Rambo, Inman follows his #1 New York Times best-selling How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You, with this ode to the furry, four-footed, tail-wagging bundle of love and unbridled energy frequently dubbed man’s best friend. This eponymous comic became an instant hit when it went live on The Oatmeal.com and was liked on Facebook by 700,000 fans. Now fans will have a keepsake book of this comic to give and to keep. In My Dog: The Paradox, Inman discusses the canine penchant for rolling in horse droppings, chasing large animals four times their size, and acting recklessly enthusiastic through the entirety of their impulsive, lovable lives. Hilarious and heartfelt, My Dog: The Paradox eloquently illustrates the complicated relationship between man and dog. We will never know why dogs fear hair dryers, or being baited into staring contests with cats, but as Inman explains, perhaps we love dogs so much “because their lives aren’t lengthy, logical, or deliberate, but an explosive paradox composed of fur, teeth, and enthusiasm.”

The Power of Your Past: The Art of Recalling, Recasting, and Reclaiming Published: 2011-04-11 | ISBN: 1605098264 | PDF | 240 pages | 3 MB Most of us don’t use our yesterdays very well. With our cultural obsession with “living in the moment,” we neglect to engage in creative reflection on our personal histories. In The Power Of Your Past, John Schuster systematically demonstrates that our pasts are the biggest, most accessible, and most under-utilized of resources for anyone wanting to make positive changes. In contrast to other more technical, spiritual, or therapeutic guides that address working with one’s past, he offers a balanced, practical and accessible approach through an actionable three-phase model: Recalling, Reclaiming, and Recasting. He provides exercises that link past events to achieving sounder interpretations and illustrates the process with inspiring histories of those who have experienced transformative results through embracing their own professional and personal pasts. Schuster provides insight, encouragement, and steps for essential professional and personal development. Readers who follow this model will make progress in careers short on heart and meaning, overcome obstacles that other methods can’t address, and make decisions based on their truth, not the “versions” of truth they have inherited and not fully examined. They will enjoy the peace of mind that comes with the knowledge that all they need to grow— insight, courage and persistence are the ingredients—is already within.

Hell in the Pacific: A Marine Rifleman's Journey From Guadalcanal to Peleliu ISBN: 145165913X | 2012 | EPUB | 320 pages | 2 MB In what may be the last memoir to be published by a living veteran of the pivotal invasion of Guadalcanal, which occurred almost seventy years ago, Marine Jim McEnery has teamed up with author Bill Sloan to create an unforgettable chronicle of heroism and horror. McENERY’S RIFLE COMPANY—the legendary K/3/5 of the First Marine Division, made famous by the HBO miniseries The Pacific—fought in some of the most ferocious battles of the war. In searing detail, the author takes us back to Guadalcanal, where American forces first turned the tide against the Japanese; Cape Gloucester, where 1,300 Marines were killed or wounded; and bloody Peleliu, where McEnery assumed command of the company and helped hasten the final defeat of the Japanese garrison after weeks of torturous cave-to-cave fighting. McEnery’s story is a no-holds-barred, grunt’s-eye view of the sacrifices, suffering, and raw courage of the men in the foxholes, locked in mortal combat with an implacable enemy sworn to fight to the death. From bayonet charges and hand-to-hand combat to midnight banzai attacks and the loss of close buddies, the rifle squad leader spares no details, chronicling his odyssey from boot camp through twenty-eight months of hellish combat until his eventual return home. He has given us an unforgettable portrait of men at war.
English As a Second Language English | 2011 | ISBN: 1611220521 | 194 pages | PDF | 3 MB English as a Second Language (ESL) education has gained an increasingly important role in career development in science, business, and industry on the global stage. Language teaching practice often assumes that most of the difficulties that learners face in the study of English are a consequence of the degree to which their native language differs from English. One great challenge for adult ESL learners is to reduce or eliminate 'foreign accent' in their English pronunciation. This book presents current research in the study of ESL, including brain plasticity and phonetic training in ESL; using authentic newspaper texts in teaching intermediate vocabulary in ESL learners; EFL/ESL teaching in China; and improving reading skills for ESL learners using SoundSpel.
Witness to Roswell: Unmasking the Government's Biggest Cover-up English | 2009 | ISBN: 1601630662 | 318 pages | PDF | 8 MB "This book is the closest to the truth about the `Roswell Incident' you will ever stumble upon, until that ever-mythical and distant `Day of Disclosure' dawns. What you have been seeking is the true story, the facts, the reality that the government withholds from you. This book is just in time for the 60th anniversary of the `Roswell Incident.' A revolution of thinking about UFO's is about to overtake us all. And so I urge you, by all means... read on!" --Paul Davids, Executive Producer of Roswell, the Showtime Original Movie "Witness to Roswell is a well researched, well documented, and well written account of a very important issue." --Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Capt. USN [Ret.], Apollo Astronaut, Founder of IONS "There is no one on this planet who knows more about the Roswell Incident than these two guys." --Larry Landsman, Director of Special Projects for the SCI FI Channel and Creative Executive of The Roswell Crash "Tom Carey and Donald Schmitt have devoted decades to unraveling Roswell--battling the multitude of phony `witnesses,' the desperate attempts by the government to cover the trail, and the silliness of the knee-jerk skeptics. Presenting the facts in clear language, the Carey-Schmitt team shares astonishing discoveries about the epochal events of July 1947, and why Roswell really is the Holy Grail of Ufology." --Capt. R.J. Durant, retired airline pilot, ufologist and respected Roswell Incident researcher "The Roswell case is the most important UFO case of all time because it is from here that all decisions were made. It was the first of the cover-ups, the first attempt at mis-direction, and one of the most important events in human history. It is where creatures from another world were first seen by creatures from Earth. That we still argue about the reality of this case today is simply unbelievable." --Kevin D. Randle, Ph.D., co-author: UFO Crash At Roswell and The Truth About The UFO Crash At Roswell "No two men have done more to drag the truth about Roswell out of the shadows and to expose the outrageous cover-up which has been droning on for 60 years now than Tom Carey and Don Schmitt. If the cover-up is ever going to have a stake driven through it and the Roswell case resolved once and for all, it will most likely be Tom and Don who will do it. Their prolific contributions to Ufology constitute not only a bedrock of truth we can all be proud of but demonstrate what dedication and sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty can produce. Their new book is another
milestone in the deconstruction of the Roswell cover-up." --Jeff Rense, nationally-syndicated talk show host --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir By One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII English | ISBN: 0425244237 | 2011 | EPUB | 320 pages | 3,5 MB The first and only memoir by one of the original Navajo code talkers of WWII-includes the actual Navajo Code and rare photos. Although more than 400 Navajos served in the military during World War II as top-secret code talkers, even those fighting shoulder to shoulder with them were not told of their covert function. And, after the war, the Navajos were forbidden to speak of their service until 1968, when the code was finally declassified. Of the original twenty-nine Navajo code talkers, Chester Nez is the only one still alive. The original twenty-nine were the men who first devised the code, then proved it indispensable in combat. In this memoir, the ninety-year-old Nez chronicles both his war years and his life growing up on the Checkerboard Area of the Navajo Reservation - the hard life that gave him the strength, both physical and mental, to become a Marine. His story puts a living face on the legendary men who developed what is still the only unbroken code in modern warfare.
