Private Down Under (Private 4) This book has you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. From the first page james Patterson keep you interested you need to know what is on the next page, i couldn't put it down. I rated this book 5 stars.
The Blue Blazes The characters. This story has some of the best female characters I've ever run across. Let's start with Nora. I hated her in the beginning, because not only is she trying to double cross her father, but she poisons him in the first chapter! OK, so the poison only puts you to sleep, but still. She's a pretty rotten girl. But then, later on, she isn't all that rotten after all. She evolves. Wendig makes you hate her in the beginning, but by the end of the book, you feel for her. Another of my favorite characters is Skelly, a member of the girl-gang the Get-Em-Girls.Skelly is like many of Wendig's characters: tough, brave and kick ass on the outside, but soft and squishy on the inside. She and Mookie have quite the adventure together, and I loved every scene she was in.
The Absent One: A Department Q Novel This book begins with a case file that appears inexplicably on Carl's desk. Strangely, it's a closed case, with a conviction already in place. Two siblings were murdered, and a student at a prestigious boarding school confessed. So why should Carl bother with it? But he gets intrigued and discovers that the supposed killer was part of a rich kids'
gang. The more he digs, the more he suspects the whole gang. But by now they've made their own millions and are roaming the upper echelons of Danish society.
The Blood of Gods: A Novel of Rome This is a beautifully written book that starts with the assassination of Julius Caesar by Brutus and the group calling themselves the Liberatores. Mark Anthony soon gives the funeral oration for Caesar inciting riots among the roman citizens, causing fires and the Senate house to burn down. Mark Anthony has the will of Julius Caesar read and finds Octavian is named to inherit most of Caesars property and money. Octavian returns to Rome and joins forces with Mark Anthony. The book moves at a decent pace and has fantastic battle scenes and pulls you into the sight and sounds of ancient Rome. Excellent book!!
Tempest Reborn (Jane True) It's tough to lose a good series, but I think Ms. Peeler did a good job of pacing her books and ended things at an appropriate place. She didn't drag them out too long, nor did she short-change any of the storylines. I like the place that we leave Jane and Anyan at it was believable and actually felt organic to the characters and their relationship. Though it does hurt to lose Jane, I applaud Ms. Peeler for creating a satisfying and believable end to her story with Tempest Reborn.
Tangled Souls Wiccan Gavenia Kingsgrave’s psychic gift, the ability to talk to the dead, comes with strings attached. As a Shepherd, she escorts them into the hereafter, but not all the souls want to cross over, and some can be downright vicious. When her latest case involves a heart-breaking hit-and-run victim, Gavenia is stressed to the max. The last thing she needs is a no-nonsense private detective on her tail, even if he is a handsome Irishman.
Sweet Dreams I loved this book. I had downloaded his first book Dreams my accident. I thought that I was getting James Patterson and just started reading and loved the book. So when I finished the first book I went on to this the 2nd and it was just as good as the first. He is very much like James Patterson one of my favorite writers. I didn't want to put the book down, there was always something going on. The characters are great you feel you know them and like them. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes James Patterson or books like his. I can't wait for the next book to come out.
Star Trek: The Original Series: The Folded World
As incredible and impossible as it seems, this anomaly is something that can only be described as a dimensional fold, a place where the various dimensions that science has identified and the ones it cannot yet name have folded in on one another, and the normal rules of time and space no longer apply. . . .
Spirit I was excited to see more of Chris and Becca in this book. Becca cares for Hunter and I don't think that would ever change but it's clear who she loves. But because of the history and the feelings it means more of Chris and Becca. I miss them. I still think Chris may be my favorite Merrick and we haven't seen a whole lot of him since Storm, especially with Becca. I adore these two so seeing more of them made me a super happy reader. Tons of Michael, which was exciting because he's another brother we haven't seen a whole lot from except when he's bossing the brothers around or working. We also get a feel for his girlfriend, Hannah and her son, James. (Who I adore, by the way) Then there's the twins and holy moly do I love these boys. You already heard me rave about Gabriel but Nick, how I love thee. I swear, I could gush for hours about these brothers but I don't want to put you to sleep.
Soul Stripper There is a huge supporting cast of characters that will lend itself greatly to a long running series if Collins decides to make that happen. Once again to say I am blown away does not do this justice. Buy it today. You won't be sorry!
Shift Even though Sophia and Quincy are meant to be the main characters in this book, this is truly an ensemble piece. Several story lines and characters play prominent roles in the adventure to find the Elder Scroll before the cunning Mercesti Eirik and Metis. Zachariah and Tate (whose romance heats up even as the danger they find themselves in increases), Tiege and Ariana, the elders and someone who surprised me with his appearance all enhance the story and pull the reader into the story from the very beginning. The creativity that's gone into making the Estilorian plane crystal clear and characters vivid and endearing makes this series a wonderful read! I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment in this series!
Secret for a Song For the first time, Saylor finds out what it feels like to be in love, to have friends who genuinely care about her. But secrets have a way of revealing themselves. What will happen when Saylor’s is out?
Sea Glass Island Samantha is the oldest of the three girls. Her career as a actress has not been going great lately. She is getting older and having a hard time getting work. She is wondering is now the time to make changes in her life and move back
home. In high school she had a crush on Ethan. She even sleeps in his high school football jersey that she got at a yard sale years ago. That is what she is wearing when Ethan walks into the kitchen to pick up something for Emily.
Sand Castle Bay Sand Castle Bay is the first book in the Ocean Breeze series, which involves the Castle Sisters, and their wonderful Grandmother, Cora Jane, LOVE HER!! The first sister, Emily, has come home after a hurricane struck the coast, to help clean-up the beach side restaurant owned by her gran. She expected missing shingles, and broken windows, what she doesn't expect is Boone Dorsett, the man she left behind ten years ago. These two have A LOT of built-up emotion between them, even after all these years. The hurt never left, as and betrayal that Emily and Boone feel towards each other is something that neither has soon forgotten about. But the spark between then is as strong as ever, all it takes is a look!! WHOA BABY!!
SALVE ROMA! A Felidae Novel - U.S. Edition This is a wonderful book. At last the other Felidae novels will coming out in english. Despite some problems with the translation. It's a bit rough and I was mentally correcting parts as I read them it is good story. It irony came through well. Francis in this book comes through as something of a feline Continetal Opor Sam Spade. Lots of twists and turns that hold you even when you know they're coming. I'll be looking forward to more books in the series and indeed by the author coming out in english. Even with the problems mentioned above this is a worthwhile read for lovers of cats and/or hard boiled detectives. Despite the problems it desires 5 stars for being a long awaited english version of a unique series.
Rogue Operator: A Special Agent Dylan Kane Thriller A great read for Easter. Glad I signed up at the back of the last book for email notifications otherwise I might have missed this! It came out overnight and I had the book early this morning and finished this evening. Couldn't put it down. Kennedy is my favorite right now because of the Acton series and this new spy series is fantastic. Like his other thrillers it is fast paced and action filled. I only wish he could write faster.
Rush of Blood Billingham has always been good at that, but he's particularly brilliant here in Rush of Blood. He does perhaps play to the conventions of the genre and feel the need to be a little more clever than necessary with the conclusion, but in doing so without invalidating the character development and the meticulously laid-out crime procedural elements that make this a terrific and insightful read, he demonstrates just how good a writer he has become. This is British crime writing at its very best.
Pharaoh Perfect for fans of Clive Cussler and Dan Brown, Pharaoh is a pulse-pounding new adventure starring intrepid marine archaeologist Jack Howard, on the trail of a shattering revelation about an ancient secret buried deep under the Egyptian pyramids.
Of Triton I thought that Of Poseidon was a really fun read and a great start to a trilogy. However, It didn't come across as very in depth and developed, so I'm glad to see that Of Triton expands on the world and characters a bit. Seeing more of the underwater world and the other Syrena characters really helped advance the storyline and give me a peek into this world. Things were intense at times, dramatic and times and even touching. It definitely didn't feel like the second book in a trilogy.
Odds Against Tomorrow This book is hopefully, partially science fiction. An event does occur that brings the process to a focus. I will not discuss it to avoid spoiler issues. But the writing is sublime in its flow and its ability to lull the reader into one step further each time into not so far fetched futures. I know from reading the reviews of the folks in our community that there is a decent sized audience for this genre, and for you, I recommend this book.
Myths of Origin: Four Short Novels The following three novellas have more defined stories, but they still aren't for people who like nice, defined beginningmiddle-end stories. These are for people who like to sink into decadently luscious, scented prose like a luxurious bath, surrounded by flowers, talking animals, mystical dream-lands and dusty jewels. Valente's prose is almost too sensual to stand at times.
Never Let You Fall (The Prophecy of Tyalbrook) (Volume 1) One thing that really stood out to me was Michele's attention to details. There's a lot going on and you end up being thrown into a new world along with Skye, trying to soak up a whole lot of information that is hard to swallow at times. But never once was I confused. I actually felt like I was one step ahead of Skye because the descriptive way that the words are written made everything seem so real. There was even a few times I started to wish I lived in Tyalbrook because it truly sounds magical and way cooler than where I am!
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" is not all about cancer though, in fact, the dying girl subplot plays only a relatively small part in Greg's story. It is more about Greg defining himself, stopping to play so safe, about bringing a little more focus onto his future and about understanding of who he is. The author might be a little coy repeating again and again in his narrative that there is no point to this novel, but there is one.
My Side Sometimes it’s where you find Mr. Random shacked up and sprawled out on what was supposed to be your new bed. Between the bear spray and the handcuffs, she discovers a terrible mistake has been made. Lochlan hasn't broken into her new home to sleep with a seedy barmaid...he owns half.
Leopard's Prey Loved the story. As always Feehan delivers a fast paced, sexy read. It keeps you guessing until the end, but doesn't torture you with impossible twists and turns.
Just One Kiss I absolutely loved this book...as I always do with Susan Mallery. What I love about the Fools Gold books is that even though characters show up in other books, you don't have to read from book one to know what's going on. Although you will definitely want to read all of the books just because they are that good!
Jet: A Marked Men Novel The next book will feature Rome (Rule's Brother) and Cora. I am hoping the author will write Rome as more alpha male rather than a sensitive guy. Cora is a great character, I can't wait to read more about her and I am hoping these two are given some angst and that their story has more depth as they are both older characters than the ones that have featured so far.
It Had to Be You (Lucky Harbor) IT HAD TO BE YOU is a standalone novel where characters from previous books are referenced but do not steal the thunder from the new characters unfolding in the plot. Recommended read for those who seek an escape through cozy contemporary romance.
Hell's Phoenix Hell's Phoenix is the second instalment of the Road To Hell series. I LOVED the prequel and the first book, but THIS was EPIC! Maybe I should duplicate my FIVE STARS rating, because if any book deservers TEN stars, then it's sure as hell this one does. We have the chance to dig deeper into the RTH world this time. So deep, that we reached Hell... literally. Madison intended to save Nix from Hell, had a good plan - okay, maybe not THAT good, but it was a plan after all -, and nothing goes as she planned. But at least she managed to get into her husband's, Micah's realm to fulfil her quest.
Handbook for a Teenage Antichrist
I really enjoyed this series. Not only was it entertaining, but it makes you FEEL for the characters. Not many authors can invoke that in their readers, but Mr. Bloodworth has done so (for me anyway). I can't wait for more of this story and to discover other projects as well.
Heat Me Up: A Collection of Passionate Stories This book has some nice facts on it though some are already repeating. It is true that sex is declining once a child arrives in a marriage. This is due to a lot of time management must be done in order to squeeze in that forgotten act which is unfortunately considered as a low priority for couples in this situation...
Ghosting Kirby Gann is a very talented wordsmith with a keen eye for dirt-level details that he describes in remarkably innovative and interesting ways. His characters are so nicely developed that the reader can almost see them on the printed page. Some are just ghosts, memories of those who have died off or disappeared. Whatever their status, they all contribute to making Ghosting a fascinating novel that tests readers' mettle in a variety of ways. However, especially in the first half of the book, Gann sometimes revels a bit too much in his linguistic virtuosity. As a result, the story becomes secondary to a complex prose style. Maybe too much of a good thing.
Goddess (Starcrossed) The Starcrossed series started with a bang and ended with a bang. I am so glad I picked this series up. I am really going to miss the characters but I feel like it had a great ending. If you love starcrossed lovers and Greek mythology then you are totally going to want to pick up this series.
Genesis Queen (Road to Hell series) (Volume 3) If you have not read the other books in this series, this book will probably not make too much sense. there is a super brief synopsis of the other books in the front, but those are more for refreshing readers then bringing new readers up to speed. If you have not read them, I would really start there. I started with the prequel, Madison's Life Lessons and think that it gave me a different perspective on two of the characters than if I started with book one. I think you could start with either and be quite happy with your experience. If you like dark, steamy, well developed stories where evil is not cut and dry, this series is probably up your alley. Be forewarned. I found them very addictive. I actually own both ebooks and real books for the rest of the series and will be buying the paperback of this book once it becomes available.
Freefall
This is the follow up story to this author's previous book and some of the characters are the same, however this book can be read as a stand alone. This is Sam and Hope's story, Sam was in a coma for most of the previous book. This story is very much an action adventure book. The first book took place in a compressed area and this one ranges through the great outdoors which is well described by the author. The characters are all quite different, all have some pretty thorny pasts and all add interest and texture to the novel.
Forbidden Fruit (Shannon Cheney) To make matters worse, there’s this weird amnesia thing happening. She might think she’s going crazy, except Jesse’s got it too, and memory loss isn’t contagious like the flu. When Shannon pokes around, trying to put the missing pieces together, demonic retaliation is swift and potentially deadly. Jesse’s too much of a white knight to let her face danger alone, and she’s hoping he can’t resist the white-hot chemistry blazing between them…
Fool For You This book is amazing, you won't be able to put it down. The author does a wonderful job of describing and drawing you in. The characters are well developed, by the end of the book you'll feel like you know them! This is one of the best romance novels I've read, if not THE best. I wish I could find a guy that's just 25% of Corey! I would be happy with that! Definitely a great summer read. Can't wait to read it again!
Felidae on the Road - Special U.S. Edition Francis, the charming cat from Felidae, is back and into new and frightening adventures. The story is amazing in that, at least to a cat lover like me, it goes into perfectly logical thought patterns and logic for the main character who just happens to be feline. Francis is off on an adventure, exploring the countryside and meeting many new characters, although many are not exactly sympathetically portrayed. All in all a good read.
Diamonds in the Rough Thanks to her grandfather's complicated will, Miss Adela Ruffington, along with her mother and sisters, is about to lose her home and income to a distant cousin, the closest male heir to the Millingford title. For Adela, nothing could be more insulting being denied her rightful inheritance for a randy scoundrel like Wilson, the very man who broke her heart following a lusty dalliance years ago.
Defy (Firstborn Trilogy Book One) Ultimately, this is a coming of age story. But not just for Tate. Many of the characters have their lives move in directions they never expected. They develop skills they didn't know they had, handle dangers they never imagined and they build relationships that shake their very foundations. Some even learn to trust and love.
Dark Days Rough Roads Military issues, security, and terrorism are subjects I am not unfamiliar with, I have some work that has been published on counter-terrorism so the general storyline is not unbelievable. I've been working on preparedness since the 1980's and found a couple of new twists and concepts to explore for our program. I really enjoyed it.
Dark Convergence Dark Convergence is a great first novel for the Iron Kingdoms setting. The characters are dynamic and the alternating perspectives gives a great view into the thoughts and actions of Sebastian Nemo and Aurora. The Convergence of Cyriss is spetacularly introduced in this novel and it is very obvious that Dave Gross paid extra special attention to the source material. Fans of Warmachine will love this book. Fans of Scifi/Fantasy will love this book.
Cuttlefish David Freer has created an alternate history based on believable environmental events. There's a little Jules Verne in the story of the Cuttlefish.
Damage Done The characters in this story came alive for me. I could relate to the lead female, feel her frustrations & desires. This was such an excellent read, I am excited what she will write next!
Carolina Rain (The Fifth Manny Willilams Thriller) "Carolina Rain" is Rick Murcer's fifth book in his Manny Williams Thriller series. When you read this one you're again in for twists and turns that abound throughout the story. In "Carolina Rain" we see more of Sophie Lee, the bubbly character who often gives some comic relief to tense and suspenseful storylines and dark crimes.
Brianna on the Brink I started reading Brianna a couple of days ago and I can't stop. The author brings the emotions and angst of the American teenager clearly to the reader. I am half way through the book and my heart breaks for this girl. I can't wait to see how it ends.
Bones of Contention: A Dinah Pelerin Mystery This is a terrific Australian family mystery filled with deadly twists including a great climax. The setting and eccentric cast refresh the family feud inheritance theme as readers will relish the Down Under manipulations of Cleon while wondering what next will happen amidst the dysfunctional who compete for a paragraph.
Bonereapers: A Dinah Pelerin Mystery If you're a fan of Agatha Christie - type mysteries, where each chapter peels away another layer of the various characters' facades, the setting becomes more sinister as the story progresses and the tension sneakily twists tighter until you can't put the book down, this story is for you. Add to the mix wit that will make you chuckle and a protagonist you'll want to spend more time with. The story is clever and well written, and I suspect very well researched. By the time I was a third of the way through you couldn't have ripped the book out of my hands until I was done with the heart-pounding ending. I've been a fan of Ms. Matthews first two books and this one doesn't disappoint. I'm only sorry I have to wait months until the next one comes out.
Binding the Shadows (Arcadia Bell) I was in complete awe by the last page. Jenn Bennett isn't afraid to take the risk and inflict her characters with immense pain and suffering but I believe that risky chance paid off big. These characters may be fictional but they struggle despite their magical abilities and it manages to humanize them. Binding the Shadows leaves you with a jawdropper of an ending that will leave you desperately wanting 'Crossing the ?thyr'. Urban Fantasy fans: read this series, it won't fail to enthrall you.
Blood and Sand: An Elemental World Novel I have no idea (nor do I care to know!) how Elizabeth Hunter works her magic but with every new book I am completely taken in and consumed by what she has written. Blood and Sand hits all the pertinent points for me: interesting short-term plot (check) the long-term plot line is advanced (check) solid, dependable, familiar and fun characters whom I love (check) and excellent, witty and fun dialogue which carries the story (check). I know I am gushing but this is a series and author I am passionate about and highly, highly recommend this book...
Bet Your Bones: A Dinah Pelerin Mystery We learn a bit more about Dinah's past in the follow up to BONES OF CONTENTION but in the context of her friendship with Claude Ann and less about her family dynamics/secrets. It isn't necessary to read BOC first but it does give you a more complete picture of who and what Dinah is. Via Dinah Pelerin we're once again treated to a slice of real life Hawaii versus the glamorized superficial version we're typically shown. Extensive research went into BET YOUR BONES and it shows. Volcanoes, lava, formation of the islands, Hawaiian lore/mythology, and a glimpse into the true feelings of some of the indigenous people are some of the ground Dinah covers as she tries to solve a murder to save herself and Claude Ann. Colorful characters, lots of local flavor, intelligence, wit, great dialog and a good mystery are part and parcel of the appeal of this series to me. I'm looking forward to the next Dinah.
Any Other Name (The Split Worlds)
You know you are getting into a book when you want to pull characters aside for a little chat. Will, you are an idiot. An idiot with good intentions, but you pissed me the hell off. Max, you need to listen to your gargoyle more. Mr. Sorcerer there is something so very off about you. I feel some good bits of secrets spilling in book 3. Because this is a middle book, we are of course left with more questions than answers, but I anticipated that, so it didn't bother me. I loved the set up and can't wait to see what happens in the conclusion. Just a few more months to go.
Any Duchess Will Do I'm a voracious reader, but this is among the only books of the past several years which I found so enchanting and unputdownable that I had to forego my usual seven hours of sleep. It was immediately placed on the surprisingly short list of romances that I plan to read again...and again. :) I've reluctantly given most of the Spindle Cove novels 3.5 stars, feeling that they tend to start out strong before meandering around in the middle and limping to the finish line. For me, Any Duchess Will Do started out wonderfully and retained that wonderfulness throughout. Happy reading, and good luck getting more sleep than I did!
A Prior Engagement A Prior Engagement is a story of friends turned lovers with a dark twist. Everleigh has grown up in a privileged, yet completely controlled lifestyle. Forsaken by her parents, she is engaged to Tom, a dominating and aggressive man. Surrounded by people, yet feeling empty and alone, Everleigh has many expectations placed on her. When she meets William in one of her classes, she figures it would be nice to have a friend. What she doesn't expect is that she will fall hard for him over coffee and schoolwork. William has grown up modestly with a loving family and great friends. He is instantly smitten with "Evie", as he likes to call her, but realizes she is holding back. What he doesn't know is how many and how big her secrets are.
A Conspiracy of Faith (Department Q) Adler-Olsen delves into Carl's psyche and we discover that behind the facade of laziness and apathy are a sharp mind and compassionate nature. In addition, the author amuses us with Carl and Assad's banter and their efforts to tame the third member of their team, the prickly and unpredictable Rose. We also learn a bit more about Carl's untidy personal life, emotional distress, and need to redeem himself as a man and a police officer.
The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black Had the book only contained the intriguing, very detailed anatomical sketches of mythical creatures with human characteristics (or vice versa), The Resurrectionist still would have been a curious but fascinating tome. Hudspeth's imaginative rendering of fantasy in a pseudo-medical setting is ingenious. But the sketches are preceded by a biography of the enigmatic Dr. Spencer Black, which provides a very sinister dimension, one that is only fully realized once the reader arrives at the last set of sketches.
Wild Awake Characters were vivid, the writing was strong and the overall plot was so weird and modern that it just felt like my cup of tea. Kiri is the kind of wild heroine you often read about from male perspectives or in sci-fi action books. So kudos to the author for bringing this strong whirlwind of a girl to realistic fiction. Strongly recommended for daring contemporary readers.
The Remains of the Day There is always the danger of reading too much into a book. That is a danger that I don't believe exists with The Remains of the Day, one of the most beautifully written contemporary novels. The Remains of the Day is the story of Stevens, an English butler in post-World War II England. In beautiful understatement, Ishiguro explores the themes of the novel: What is the meaning of professionalism in today's society? How much should one sacrifice in order to remain true to his own personal ethics?
The Night Is Watching (Krewe of Hunters)
I think I have read every book she has wrote, and each time I think I'm so smart cause I've figured out the ending....... NOT!!! she is a writer who gives you more twists and turns until your so engrossed that you've sat up all night to finish it and by this time you've realized your ending was so far off that you sit back and shake you head in wonder......
The Eye of Luvelles (Worlds of the Crystal Moon, Book 2) I heartily recommend these books to anyone who likes a good story. The writing style is easy to read and the plot is engaging, and it's funny in just the right places.
The Iron Queen (Daughters of Zeus) This book was different than the other two because Kaitlin Bevis told it from three points of view: Hades, Persephone and Aphrodite. I really, really enjoyed Hades point of view because you could see his real struggle. He loves Persephone, a lot, and wants to save her. I did enjoy Aphrodite's point of view because we could see her struggle with being loyal to her family and doing the right thing. I felt really bad for her at time.
The Frozen Sky Jeff Carlson has outdone himself with this expansion on his novella. Pure Science Fiction goodness. Had me spellbound from beginning to end. The tech is realistic, the aliens are...well alien, not just anthropomorphized characters that don't look quite human. Carlson's portrayal of corporate greed is spot on with our current culture. My favorite science fiction novel in recent memory.
The Forever of Ella and Micha I just loved this book, well both books! It's so touching and loving but still filled with angst. All the characters are great, and this is a couple you just want to see be together, and I was completely satisfied with the ending. I love Jessica Sorensen's writing, and Iook forward to reading Lila and Ethan's story.
The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict In the beginning of the book Nicholas is quite cynical for his young age, which is to be expected when one considers what he has been through. However, the extraordinary education of Nicholas Benedict is not just about a boy learning facts and figures, it is also about him discovering the good in people. It starts with an old diary in which the writer portrays his deep love for his wife whom he describes as "a witty, scholarly woman, always reading, a clever problem-
solver". While Nicholas's first reaction to reading her description is less than warm, by the end of the book he comes to realize that there are many good and decent people in the world, and he aspires to be one of them.
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate I'm a sucker for intergenerational tales and Calpurnia and her grandfather are my new favorite pair. He might be the teacher figure, but he learns as much from his granddaughter as she from him. It's fun watching his enthusiasm with the new technologies like the telephone (just one in town but it creates quite a stir) and his lusting after an automobile. The large family and assorted other secondary characters are delightfully realized. Each chapter starts with a quote from Darwin that complements the evolution of the Tate family. Callie Vee and grandpa make me think I should start carrying a scientific notebook everywhere with me, and spend a little more time with my nose out of a book and looking carefully at the wonders around me.
The End Games Talk about twists and turns. At the end of every chapter, my mouth had fallen open. Seriously. Michael did a phenomenal job at plotting out the story so perfectly so he could put in plot twists. And man, there are loads! Lots of things I didn't even expect or see coming happened, and once they did, it always boggled my mind. It's so amazing. It's only May, but I can definitely see The End Games on my Top 13 of 2013 list. The End Games is definitely the best debut novel I've read all year!
The Dirty Parts of the Bible The story made me laugh out loud often in the first chapter of the Kindle sample, and so I had to buy the book right away. I gladly paid $2.99 a total no-brainer. The clever interplay of scene, language and surprisingly scripture and conservative Christian values in a home of a Pastor's son works beautifully. If you know much about the Bible, this story will strike a chord with you it's almost like an inside joke. Very clever.
The Female Brain English | 279 pages | ISBN-10: 0767920104 | PDF | 3.51 MB Why are women more verbal than men? Why do women remember details of fights that men can't remember at all? Why do women tend to form deeper bonds with their female friends than men do with their male counterparts? These and other questions have stumped both sexes throughout the ages. Now, pioneering neuropsychiatrist Louann Brizendine, M.D., brings together the latest findings to show how the unique structure of the female brain determines how women think, what they value, how they communicate, and who they love. While doing research as a medical student at Yale and then as a resident and faculty member at Harvard, Louann Brizendine discovered that almost all of the clinical data in existence on neurology, psychology, and neurobiology focused exclusively on males. In response to the overwhelming need for information on the female mind, Brizendine established the first clinic in the country to study and treat women's brain function.
In The Female Brain, Dr. Brizendine distills all her findings and the latest information from the scientific community in a highly accessible book that educates women about their unique brain/body/behavior.

The Hammer and The Cross: A New History of the Vikings Publisher: Penguin | 2010 | ISBN: 0141017759 | English | PDF | 464 pages | 26.88 Mb For those living outside Scandinavia, the Viking Age effectively began in 793 with an attack on the monastery at Lindisfarne, a characteristically violent harbinger of what was in store for Britain and much of Europe from the Vikings for the next 300 years, until the final destruction of the heathen temple to the Norse gods at Uppsala around 1090. Robert Ferguson is a sure guide across what he calls 'the treacherous marches which divide legend from fact in Viking Age history'. His long familiarity with the literary culture of Scandinavia - the eddas, the poetry of the skalds and the sagas - is combined with the latest archaeological discoveries and the evidence of picture-stones, runes, ships and objects scattered all over northern Europe, to make the most convincing modern portrait of the Viking Age in any language. The Hammer and the Cross ranges from Scandinavia itself to Kievan Rus and Byzantium in the east, to Iceland, Greenland and the north American settlements in the west. Beyond its geographical boundaries the book takes us on a journey to a misty region inhabited by Hallfred the Troublesome Poet, Harald Bluetooth, Ragnar HairyBreeches, Ivar the Boneless and Eyvind the Plagiarist, in which literature, history and myth dissolve into one another.

The World's Most Dangerous Place: Inside the Outlaw State of Somalia ISBN: 0306821176 | 2013 | EPUB | 432 pages | 5 MB Although the war in Afghanistan is now in its endgame, the West’s struggle to eliminate the threat from Al Qaeda is far from over. A decade after 9/11, the war on terror has entered a new phase and, it would seem, a new territory. In early 2010, Al Qaeda operatives were reportedly “streaming” out of central Asia toward Somalia and the surrounding region. Somalia, now home to some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists, was already the world’s most failed state. Two decades of anarchy have spawned not just Islamic extremism but piracy, famine, and a seemingly endless clan-based civil war that has killed an estimated 500,000, turned millions into refugees, and caused hundreds of thousands more to flee and settle in Europe and North America. What is now happening in Somalia directly threatens the security of the world, possibly more than any other region on earth. James Fergusson’s book is the first accessible account of how Somalia became the world’s most dangerous place and what we can—and should—do about it.
Red Eagles: Americas Secret MiGs ISBN: 1846039703 | 2012 | EPUB | 416 pages | 11 MB From the late 1960s until the end of the Cold War, the United States Air Force acquired and flew Russian-made MiG jets, culminating in a secret squadron dedicated to exposing American fighter pilots to enemy technology and tactics. Red Eagles tells the story of this squadron from the first tests of MiGs following the Vietnam War when the USAF had been woefully under-prepared in aerial combat. These initial flights would develop into the "black" or classified program known internally as Constant Peg. At a secret air base in Nevada, ace American fighter pilots were presented with a range of differnet MiG jets with a simple remit: to expose "the threat" to as many of their brethern as possible. Maintaining and flying these "assets" without without spare parts or manuals was an almost impossible task, putting those flying the MiGs in mortal danger on every flight. Despite these challenges, in all more than 5,900 American aircrews would train against America's secret MiGs, giving them the eskills they needed to face the enemy in real combat situations. For the first time, this book tells the story of Constant Peg and the 4477th Red Eagles Squadron in the words of the men who made it possible.
Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending ISBN: 1451665067 | 2013 | EPUB | 224 pages | 1 MB If you think money can’t buy happiness, you’re not spending it right. Two rising stars in behavioral science explain how money can buy happiness—if you follow five core principles of smarter spending. Happy Money offers a tour of new research on the science of spending. Most people recognize that they need professional advice on how to earn, save, and invest their money. When it comes to spending that money, most people just follow their intuitions. But scientific research shows that those intuitions are often wrong. Happy Money explains why you can get more happiness for your money by following five principles, from choosing experiences over stuff to spending money on others. And the five principles can be used not only by individuals but by companies seeking to create happier employees and provide “happier products” to their customers. Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton show how companies from Google to Pepsi to Crate & Barrel have put these ideas into action. Along the way, the authors describe new research that reveals that luxury cars often provide no more pleasure than economy models, that commercials can actually enhance the enjoyment of watching television, and that residents of many cities frequently miss out on inexpensive pleasures in their hometowns. By the end of this book, readers will ask themselves one simple question whenever they reach for their wallets: Am I getting the biggest happiness bang for my buck?
The Keto Cookbook ISBN: 193630323X | 2011 | EPUB | 144 pages | 6 MB The ketogenic diet, which is very high in fats and low in carbohydrates, was first developed almost 80 years ago. It makes the body burn fat for energy instead of glucose. When carefully monitored by a medical team familiar with its use, the diet helps two out of three children who are tried on it and may prevent seizures completely in one out of three. It is a strict diet, and takes a strong commitment from the whole family. The ketogenic diet is not a do-it-yourself diet. It is a serious form of treatment that, like other therapies for epilepsy, has some side effects that have to be watched for. The book contains 96 recipes grouped by breakfast and brunch, appetizers & snacks, lunch, dinner, and sweets and treats. The book includes a 16-page color insert illustrating each recipe. A Curious Man: The Strange and Brilliant Life of Robert "Believe It or Not!" Ripley English | ISBN: 077043620X | 2013 | EPUB | 432 pages | 10 MB A Curious Man is the marvelously compelling biography of Robert “Believe It or Not” Ripley, the enigmatic cartoonist turned globetrotting millionaire who won international fame by celebrating the world's strangest oddities, and whose outrageous showmanship taught us to believe in the unbelievable. As portrayed by acclaimed biographer Neal Thompson, Ripley’s life is the stuff of a classic American fairy tale. Bucktoothed and cursed by shyness, Ripley turned his sense of being an outsider into an appreciation for the strangeness of the world. After selling his first cartoon to Time magazine at age eighteen, more cartooning triumphs followed, but it was his “Believe It or Not” conceit and the wildly popular radio shows it birthed that would make him one of the most successful entertainment figures of his time and spur him to search the globe’s farthest corners for bizarre facts, exotic human curiosities, and shocking phenomena. Ripley delighted in making outrageous declarations that somehow always turned out to be true—such as that Charles Lindbergh was only the sixty-seventh man to fly across the Atlantic or that “The Star Spangled Banner” was not the national anthem. Assisted by an exotic harem of female admirers and by ex-banker Norbert Pearlroth, a devoted researcher who spoke eleven languages, Ripley simultaneously embodied the spirit of Peter Pan, the fearlessness of Marco Polo and the marketing savvy of P. T. Barnum. In a very real sense, Ripley sought to remake the world’s aesthetic. He demanded respect for those who were labeled “eccentrics” or “freaks”—whether it be E. L. Blystone, who wrote 1,615 alphabet letters on a grain of rice, or the man who could swallow his own nose. By the 1930s Ripley possessed a vast fortune, a private yacht, and a twenty-eight room mansion stocked with such “oddities” as shrunken heads and medieval torture devices, and his pioneering firsts in print, radio, and television were tapping into something deep in the American consciousness—a taste for the titillating and exotic, and a fascination
with the fastest, biggest, dumbest and most weird. Today, that legacy continues and can be seen in reality TV, YouTube, America’s Funniest Home Videos, Jackass, MythBusters and a host of other pop-culture phenomena. In the end Robert L. Ripley changed everything. The supreme irony of his life, which was dedicated to exalting the strange and unusual, is that he may have been the most amazing oddity of all.

Who Wrote the Bible? English | 1997 | ISBN: 0060630353 | 304 pages | PDF | 8,3 MB Focusing on the central books of the Old Testament--Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy--he draws upon biblical and archaeological evidence to make a convincing argument for the identities of their authors. In the process he paints a vivid picture of the world of the Bible--its politics, history, and personalities. The result is a marvel of scholarship that sheds a new and enriching light on our understanding of the Bible as literature, history, and sacred text. From Library Journal Friedman carefully sifts through clues available in the text of the Hebrew Bible and those provided by biblical archaeology searching for the writer(s) of, primarily, the Pentateuch. He does so with clarity and engaging style, turning a potentially dry scholarly inquiry into a lively detective story. The reader is guided through the historical circumstances that occasioned the writing of the sources underlying the Five Books of Moses and the combining of these diverse sources into the final literary product. According to Friedman, the most controversial part of his case is the identification of the writer and date of the Priestly source. This book is neither comprehensive nor unduly complex, making it a good introductory text for beginners and nonspecialists. Recommended for all academic libraries. Craig W. Beard, Harding Univ.
