You Against Me I thought the author did great with the characters and relationships. They felt realistic and believable. There were times when some of the characters would say or do something that pissed me off. I thought they were being unfair, selfish, or stupid. But then later on, those same characters would say something that made me completely understand why they said what they said or why they did what they did. I'm glad for that. I never like going through books hating characters. As for the main characters, Mikey and Ellie, I really liked them. I thought their relationship was done well. My favorite line in the book was from Ellie's brother Tom, the one being accused of the crime. He said this: "You want this to be a love story?" Well, I know I wanted it to be, between Mikey and Ellie. And after reading it, I think it is and more. The book's summary states it perfectly: 'It's a book about loyalty and the choices that come with it. But above all it's a book about love - for one's family and for another.' Not everything is resolved by the end of the book. We don't exactly know what will happen to the characters, but it's not that hard to imagine. I don't believe the author left us hanging, which I'm grateful for. And like I mentioned before, the ending even left me with a calm feeling. So for me, it was a satisfying read, and I definitely recommend it.
True Fires In the idyllic town of Lake Esther, Florida, little is allowed to ripple the surface calm which is just the way Sheriff Kyle Deluth likes it. But when Deluth "removes" two young children from the local school because of the color of their skin, the sheriff's senseless act of cruelty sparks a fire under the women of Lake Esther that will scorch the lives of all involved. In their pursuit of justice, an indomitable heiress, a revered journalist, and a fading Southern Belle will forge an unlikely alliance across the racial divide. One that will change the face of the town and their lives forever. Deeply moving and peopled with a rich cast of characters, Susan Carol McCarthy mines the hotbed of racism with insight and compassion. Bittersweet, inspirational and wholly compelling, True Fires confirms McCarthy’s reputation as a dazzling new voice in probing real-life events to interpret the injustices of our past.
Time to Murder and Create . Matthew Scudder is Lawrence Block's remarkable private investigator. He's a former NYPD detective who left the force after an accident left a child dead in a crossfire. Because he is unlicensed you can't "hire" him. Instead he does you a favor by taking your case and solving the crime. In exchange for the favor the client returns the favor by giving him some cash. Scudder is an alcoholic. Rarely do you find him without a drink in has hand or at one of has favorite watering holes. "Time to Murder and Create" is the second in a series of at least a dozen books in the Matthew Scudder Series. A petty thief, Jake Jablon, known as "the Spinner" because he's always spinning a silver dollar, is found murdered. Someone crashed in his skull and then dumped him in The New York's East River. Matt Scudder was hired in advance by Jablon to find his killer if he is killed. He knew someone was after him because he was blackmailing three people. Jablon hands Scudder and envelope containing information on the three. Scudder hides the envelope in his hotel room with the instructions not to open it until Jablon is dead. When it becomes known that he was dead Scudder's work begins. He examins the contents of the envelops and begins to visit all three victims of Jablon's blackmailing efforts. Scudder himself is in danger. The book makes citing reading and is very difficult to put down. The book originally appeared in paperback that makes it difficult to find in my public library system. After being a success a hard cover version of the book was published with mystery writer Jonathan Kellerman, another one of my favorite authors writing an introduction.
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle Product Description: Japan's most highly regarded novelist now vaults into the first ranks of international fiction writers with this heroically imaginative novel, which is at once a detective story, an account of a disintegrating marriage, and an excavation of the buried secrets of World War II. In a Tokyo suburb a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife's missing cat. Soon he finds himself looking for his wife as well in a netherworld that lies beneath the placid surface of Tokyo. As these searches intersect, Okada encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists: a psychic prostitute a malevolent yet mediagenic politician a cheerfully morbid sixteen-year-old-girl and an aging war veteran who has been permanently changed by the hideous things he witnessed during Japan's forgotten campaign in Manchuria. Gripping, prophetic, suffused with comedy and menace, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is a tour de force equal in scope to the masterpieces of Mishima and Pynchon.
The Year of Magical Thinking The book is raw. If you're looking for religous or spiritual guidance and inspiration, this is not the book for you. As Didion herself noted, writing about the book recently, it was intentionally written "raw". I assume she didn't want to wait, to distance herself from the intensity of the experience as she wrote it down, quite unlike many other books she has written. Raw or not, it wasn't sloppy, overly sentimental or complete despairing. It was simply honest, heartwrenchingly so, and Didion doesn't deviate from communicating, in absolute striking detail, the sense of alienation and disorientation that separates mourners from those who seem to be living "normal" lives. Grief is its own territory, separate from so-called normalcy. In so many ways, it is an illness, an affliction of the spirit and not one that can be cured in any one way. An aside- the photo of Didion inside the dustjacket is haunting. No question that those are the eyes of someone who has been scraped to the core, wounded and, presumably, still recovering. There is something beautiful in that portrait and, oddly, comforting. It is the face of a survivor, however hard it might be to live as one. This book will remain on my bookshelf and I expect I'll be thumbing through it for solace time and again. Reading it was both painful and cathartic and strangely comforting, with an intensity that left me awestruck. I am still amazed that she was able to produce such a beautifully written book in the throes of so much pain.
The Third Victim I'm very glad I didn't leave it. "The Third Victim" is about so much more than 'another school shooting'. I promise you will never see the news in the same light again. Another surprise for me, was the author's reference back to "The Perfect Husband". This is not a series book however, the reference is made and dropped. I was also surprised that I remembered the previous book so vividly after reading it more than four years ago. That alone is testament to Lisa Gardner's writing ability. "The Third Victim" is a well plotted mystery with characters who are flawed, but very real. Once started this book is very hard to put down for annoying things like work and sleep.
The Ten-Year Nap While I worried that the book was going to the "stay-at-home moms are stupid" place, it really didn't go there at all, but was more about being true to one's self and knowing how to do that in whatever circumstances you find yourself in. In fact, what the main character went through with friends and family telling her which jobs she was suited for and how she really should be doing something with her life while she had been DOING what she wanted to do raise her son...
well, I could relate. I could also relate with her needing to do more upon the realization that her son was needing her less and less. If you can read a book with an open mind and see stories as infinitely human, you will enjoy this book. However, if your first impulse is to judge people and you have no interest in looking deeper, you won't like this book at all. It isn't adventure. It's just about life.
The Solomon Sisters Wise Up (Red Dress Ink Novels) While there are some humorous elements, this is actually one of the warmest and most realistic chick lit books I've seen so far. The only thing that threw me a bit at first was that the whole book is in first person, and yet there are three main characters, but once I got to know them, it didn't matter. All three stories were touching and enjoyable, and I found myself really rooting for the characters. I also found the subplot with father and his young wife interesting, and thought she did a great job of showing how these three girls get to know each other and discover that their father isn't exactly what they thought. This is the kind of book to curl up with for the evening, and then loan to all your friends when you're done! I read her first one, See Jane Date, which was cute, but this one is much deeper and overall just much more fun.
The Sins of the Fathers (Matthew Scudder Mysteries) This book serves as a means of introducing Matt Scudder to us. We learn that, while he works as a private detective, he's not licensed and will do investigative work in return for "gifts". We find out why he left the police force and the bulk of his personal life. We also find out that he's rarely without a drink in his hand. Apart from the character introduction, we are treated to a mystery that firstly, is more than it first appears, and secondly, displays Scudder's dogged determination perfectly. To start off the Matt Scudder series, he is asked by a man to investigate why his daughter was murdered. Not how, not who, but why. Her killer was her male room-mate who subsequently hanged himself in his prison cell after he was arrested. The father just wants to know why she died to set his own mind at rest. This is not a terrifically complex thriller that involves a lot of action sequences, rather it's a gritty hardboiled mystery that gradually uncovers facts while we get to know the protagonist. It serves it's purpose well as an introduction to the series and promises to hook you as a Matt Scudder fan.
The Remains of the Dead (Ghost Dusters Mysteries, No. 1) I enjoyed the relationships between all the characters. Sadie, Zack and Sadie's best friend, Pam, compliment each other well. Sadie and Zack have great chemistry. There is definite potential there. Pam brings a lighter side. She is spunky and upbeat, but not to the point of being annoying. There is also a Medium named Maeva. I laughed out loud at the bickering between her and Sadie. I really hope Maeva shows up in future issues.
The Penguin Who Knew Too Much (Meg Langslow Mysteries) This series will leave the reader laughing as Meg struggles in a vain attempt to bring order into her totally out of control family. As is often the case with cozy series the true attraction is the backstory of Meg and her crazy family rather than the mystery itself. The overall story arc is quite pronounced in this series so for maximum enjoyment begin with the first and proceed in order.
The Little Stranger "The Little Stranger" is also about the dynamics of human relationships - of the complex ties between parent and children [Roderick laments that he has been a constant source of disappointment to his mother], the bonds between siblings, and of human yearnings [for social acceptance, affection etc]. This is not a wisp of a novel but a hefty read, yet I found myself compelled to finish it within two days. I'd rate this as my favorite of Sarah Waters' work because I happen to love highly atmospheric novels and "The Little Stranger" exceeds my expectations on that account. I'd also recommend works like "The Sisters" by Poppy Adams, "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield, and "The Forgotten Garden" by Kate Morton.
The Other Daughter Well, it's not a horror story written in the Stephen King or Dean Koontz genre, but it's horrorifying enough to keep you up at night! Melanie Stokes was adopted by the Stokes family at the age of nine, when she was discovered in the emergency room abandoned by her parents and suffering amnesia. She grows up in the family loved by her parents and brother ~~ till a Texan reporter contacts her to share with her the mystery of her past. And that's when Lisa Gardner grabs you by the hand and takes you down a lane filled with secrets that will explode when Melanie stumbles on secrets her family has been keeping from her for 20 years. Lisa writes such a riveting suspenseful book!! Just when you think you got the murderer figured out, she takes you out for another spin on the theory idea and you're lost again. Then she takes you down other possibilities and you're on the run again. She writes with such twists and turns that you cannot put the book down. If you're in the mood for mind games, this book is it. It is much more of a psychological thriller with a couple of murders thrown in it to keep the suspense alive. And the ending is totally unpredictable. It's such a fun book to read!!
The Keep The narrative about Danny and the ghosts of the Keep smoothly parallels Ray's struggles in prison, and subtle connections can be made between the plot twists in both Ray and Danny's lives. The stories converge in a natural manner (yes, Egan can make the supernatural entirely real). The Keep is one of the best books of the year, and it's nearly impossible for a reviewer to re-create the experience in a few short paragraphs. Go ahead and pick this one up to see for youself!
The Eyes of Darkness This is the Koontz I love--this is the Koontz that wrote Intensity, not Fear Nothing. Why can't he always right this well? The premise is a staple to Koontz--a government science lab and the results of their expierements. The result is a strong novel of suspense and horror set in vegas and packed with emotion. This is the first "adult horror" novel I ever read and I still think it is a particularly good one. It is the book that helped me bridge the gap between Young Adult and Adult years ago (no, not R.L. Stine... I started reading the better end of YA Fiction early on.) The story opens with a mother still grieving the loss of her son a year ago in a scouting accident after thinking she sees him in a car, strange things start to happen which point to the possibility that he's still alive. A good read.
The Dust of 100 Dogs In all honesty, The Dust of 100 Dogs can be summed up on one word: spectacular. I am not kidding when I say this novel blew my mind. There are several other tales of female pirates, such as To Catch a Pirate, but The Dust of 100 Dogs outshines them by far, and for several reasons. The plot is a unique and compelling fusion of seventeenthcentury swashbuckling danger and romance, contemporary teen issues, and dog humor. All parts were written exceptionally well, and it's difficult to say which I preferred because they were all so interesting. Emer/Saffron was such an original character in all her lives, no matter how young, she always seemed so determined and mature. I really liked how she could keep her head amidst all the circumstances she encountered. I also enjoyed trying to equate the characters from the contemporary portion of this story with their seventeenth-century counterparts, if any. King's writing is so powerful that at times, I felt I was in the story alongside Emer or Saffron she succeeded in creating a romantic and unforgettable tale of everlasting love with magic and mystery. The Dust of 100 Dogs is sure to be a favorite as soon as it hits shelves among all readers, because this is a story that spans age and time.
The Ex Games (Romantic Comedies) I read this book looking for a light-hearted, entertaining and cute story and that's exactly what I got. All of the main characters are likable and there are a lot of scenes that made me laugh. The love story between Hayden and Nick is predictable but in a good way. The journey to their personal happy end is cute and makes me want to read more by Jennifer Echols. "The Ex Games" is definitely a make you feel happy book. The teasings between Hayden and Nick are my highlight of the book.
The Devil Knows You're Dead The beauty is that the story doesn't end with the solution of the crime. Instead of fast paced action you find a plodding investigator nosing around for clues to the identity of a victim whose life was more mysterious than his death. When the case is finally resolved, all the characters have already moved on with their lives. In fact, the more interesting tale is that of the survivors. Scudder, Elaine, TJ, Mick, Jan, all become your friends and neighbors and you find yourself caring much more about them than the victim or the crime itself. A remarkable portrait of very realistic people and events.
The Bullet Trick Welsh excels in describing these amoral characters who exist on the fringes of society, often marginalized with no prospects and with very little to lose, and where cheap sex, lots of drugs and violence are part of their lives. Amongst the the hazy disco lights, the cigarette smoke that shelves the air, the rooms that smell of alcohol, testosterone and sweat, here are the policemen, conmen, bent businessmen, strippers and even the illusionists, all too ready to form uneasy alliences where one hand inevitably washes over the other.
The Battle of Mogadishu: Firsthand Accounts from the Men of Task Force Ranger This is a great book if you would like to get details of what its like to be in a battle. Yes some of the stories seem rushed or "not complete" but one must remember how much goes on during an actual fire, and how much information a person has to process. It is impossible for one man to remember every little detail that these guys want. The book did do a good job as to offer some different views and perspectives of the battle so that you can get a feeling for the battle as a whole. I recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about the conflict in Somalia, or even just what its like to be a ranger when you put your training to use.
The Bargain I thoroughly recommend this book, as I've done for every other Putney I've read - and as I already did in respect of this one last week, but the review I submitted then never appeared.
Swan for the Money This is the 11th in the Meg Langslow series of comic, cozy mysteries. Meg is a successful ornamental blacksmith, recently married to Michael, a soap opera star turned drama professor. They live in the college town of Caerphilly which seems to be populated with more than its fair share of eccentrics, oddballs and just plain kooks, most of whom
are related to Meg. Each story incorporates not only memorable characters and wildly improbable situations but also somehow include some sort of bird into the story and into the title. Meg's parents have taken up a new interest - growing and showing roses. As usual Meg has found herself roped into this new enterprise, her elegant mother has maneuvered Meg into organizing and running the biggest rose show of the season. The committee had vetoed Meg's suggestions of where to hold the event as too boring and so the estate of an eccentric rose enthusiast was secured instead. Unfortunately the owner, Mrs Winkleson, is not a charming eccentric like Meg's family, but is an overbearing, obsessive bully. Mrs Winkleson has decreed that the event must conform to her preferred color scheme, black, white and grey. She has even offered a special prize for the blackest rose of the show. As is the norm with this series Meg bounces from one zany misadventure to the next, aided (or hindered) by family and friends as they stumble over a dead body or two along the way. The appeal of this series is not in the mysteries but in Meg and the ever expanding cast of secondary characters. The overall story arc of this series is quite pronounced so for maximum enjoyment begin at the beginning.
Stork Raving Mad I was a little skeptical about the storyline, but I love this series. She really made the plot believable. Well, for the outrageous Langslow family and the equally dysfunctional Caerphilly College staff. She even made the unloveable college administrators come to life. It's a quick read, perfect for the summer. I hated to see it end.
Sorceress, Interrupted The author has outdone herself again. I loved this book, and I hope there is more to come in this series.
Son of the Shadows (Silhouette Nocturne) This book and was a little disappointed. The relationship development between Jean Marc and Isabella was very disappointing, it just wasn't there. She started out with amnesia and couldn't remember what she was, plus she lost all her gifts. This was the reason her relationship with Jean Marc was at a stalemate. The author drug this out for most of the book. Got boring. The ending seemed hurried and didn't flow very well. It jumped from them being enemies to realizing they loved each other to being back in New York, all in a matter of pages. For this series you must read the other 2 in the order written to understand anything at all. A word of caution, there is alot of blood and gore. If you you are a mother of babies or young children there is scene which I found distasteful involving 2 young children. The author mentioned them twice and made sure the readers knew one was a toddler. I know this was a fictional story and a very small part of the book but as I was reading this my 17 month grandson was sleeping upstairs and it bothered me. Anyway if you do decide to read this book reading the other 2 is a must.
Son of the Sea Nia Diakos has an ordinary life running her restaurant, taking care of her little sister. Suddenly her restaurant is attacked, her little sister kidnapped, and Nia is catapulted into a colossal war between the forces of good and evil among an ancient race of magicians known as The Gifted. And that's only the beginning! Racing to retrieve the powerfully magical Jar of Naxos from the depths of the North Sea before the evil opposition finds it, Nia is paired with Erik, a merman chieftan, whose icy demeanor reflects a century of bitterness and grief. Despite the fierce attraction between them, Erik is guarded and cold. But as the two unite to defeat the evil enemy, Nia
must be transformed into a mermaid in order to accomplish her mission and the only way to do that is to become Erik's lover and conceive his child!
Small as an Elephant Small as an Elephant had me hooked from page one. The story was both riveting and touching, the characters (especially the protagonist Jack) were interesting and realistic, and the pace fast moving. Of course for me what was most impressive about Small as an Elephant was the level of writing Jacobson exhibits. She is obviously a talented storyteller, but the connection she creates between Jack and the reader really goes above and beyond. Readers will commiserate with Jack and his situation, and find themselves overwhelmed by Jack's futile thoughts of living with his mother again, and will tear up with the books touching and fantastic ending. Really it is this level of writing and connection to Jack that brings Small as an Elephant from a good book to a must read. All in all Small as an Elephant is a fantastic book. While it is short, readers will thoroughly enjoy the book. Jack is endearing and relatable, the premise is unique, and the level of writing is superb. Defiantly worth the purchase.
Six Geese A-Slaying "Six Geese A-Slaying" is Donna Andrews' tenth book in the Meg Langslow series. This time Meg has been talked into being Caerphilly County's `Mistress of the Revels' or in other words the person responsible for organizing the Christmas, excuse me, Holiday Parade. Ordinarily Meg would never have accepted the job but when the person asking her to do it is the chairman of the committee that will decide whether or not her professor husband gets tenure, saying yes seems like a good idea. As she stands in her front yard, clip board in hand, directing the arriving floats, bands, animals and handlers and other assorted participants to their staging areas her two biggest worries are the approaching snow storm and getting the Twelve Days of Christmas tableaus lined up in the right order. Her nephew, Eric, is about to hand her an even bigger problem. It seems that someone has killed Santa. As with all the books in this series, "Six Geese A-Slaying" will keep you snickering, giggling and laughing out loud from beginning to end. You may or may not figure out early on who the killer is, but that doesn't matter. The fun of these books has always been watching Meg deal with the chaos around her while trying to catch the killer. On a scale of 1 to 10 this book is definitely a 8.
Return to Me Return to Me is also a wonderful illustration of the emotional and spiritual fallout resulting from manipulative rejection, and the believer's need for a close walk with the Lord in order to resist pride and jealousy when new Christians succeed where they may have struggled. Thus the spiritual arc of the characters comes across as very genuine, especially when it comes to the older sister's attitude. There are some gritty situations in this story, but nothing I wouldn't let my teenager read. Overall, it's a fabulous example of the regrets people experience as the result of poor choices, and the subsequent struggle to forgive one's self. The author concludes by portraying the Scripture that refers to all things being possible through Christ Jesus. I highly recommend this story because of the life-changing lessons within.
Silent Mercy The latest Cooper investigative legal thriller (see Hell's Gate) is an exciting action-packed tale with quite a wallop. As required but still fun is a tour of Manhattan "as an island of churches". The story line focuses brilliantly and sharply at organized religions' antiquated but methodical allegorical beheading of women with an avenging sword wrapped inside holiness that will lead to Linda Fairstein's excommunication. Fast-paced within a strong whodunit, fans except religious fundamentalists will relish Silent Mercy.
Rotters Rotters reminded me of Rick Yancey's The Monstrumologist. It exhibits the same high quality writing and often times gruesome subject matter, only in a contemporary setting. They are still quite different, but they both have intricate stories that are uncommon for this genre. There are some truly lyrical descriptive passages in this book. Never has putrescence been described so beautifully and extensively. A foul odor permeates this story Joey goes to school every day stinking of the grave, his father carries the odor as does their house. The author did such an effective job setting this scene that by the end of the book, I was certain that the odor really had begun to leak from the pages. While there is not a lot of pulse pounding action here, the gruesome nature of events and the strong characters will easily keep readers flipping the pages long into the night. An insightful examination of death, the relationships between fathers and sons and ultimately the value of life, Rotters is a chilling look at things most don't want to think about. Best for older teens and adults, the vivid imagery and the characters are the stars of this show. A recommend only if you dare.
Revenge of the Wrought-Iron Flamingos Meg is participating in a period craft fair as part of the annual celebration and reenactment for the Battle of Yorktown. Trying to get on Mrs. Waterston's good side, she's agreed to help make sure her follow craftspeople stay completely in period. But being the go between just might be more then Meg can handle. Especially since her boyfriend's mother is cracking down on anything and everything. Meanwhile, Michael wants more from their relationship, and Meg is shying away from any form of commitment. And her brother Rob is meeting with someone interested in buying his computer game. But Roger Benson has a shady reputation at best, and when this computer guy turns up murdered in Meg's booth, the list of suspects is long. Not that she needs any more to do this weekend, but now Meg must solve this crime before the police arrest one of her friends. As with the others is the series, this book has quite a bit going on beside the mystery. And, as the title would suggest, this is a fun, light cozy. If this is what you want, you'll love the book. Even if the mystery doesn't progress quickly, there is so much going on to keep you engaged you really don't care. And the humor, from Meg's father, who insists his air tight alibi is full of holes, to gorilla costume wearing Cousin Horace, is top notch. Yet, the mystery still provides some great twists and turns. And the characters are very well defined.
I love this series when I'm in the mood for something fun and light. Donna Andrews does such a great job of keeping everything balanced that it makes for an entertaining read.
On the Loose Honey and C. Smith kept me flipping the pages into the wee hours of the night. The mission they are on is complex it involves drug runners, weapons, money and a few nuns. When you throw their chemistry into the mix, the book gets harder and harder to put down with every page. An introduction to two very dynamic new characters promises an equally thrilling next book. This is supposed to be a spin off of the Steele Street series, but it seems to be the same type of book with a lot of the same players. No complaints here. This book was as good as I hoped it would be, containing no shortage of action, adventure, danger or romance.
Murder with Puffins While I enjoyed the first book in this series, I loved this one. The plot is more focused here. It starts out slowly, but once the body is found, things quickly get moving. There are several great plot twists, and the story reaches a satisfying conclusion. Yet, the book is still filled with the humor that made the first fun to read. And the characters are alive and interesting as well. Anyone looking for a fun, light-hearted mystery need look no further then this series.
Murder with Peacocks Into this already heady mix come Duck, an avian with a taste for devilled eggs, a flock of peacocks who step in as the alarm system, and the incredibly handsome Michael Waterston, a university professor who is taking care of his mother's dressmaking business while she is getting a facelift. Michael is the romantic interest, for Meg any, and is one of those rare people who has both looks and smarts. And, lest we forget, there's Samantha, the potential sister-in-law from hell. This is a true comic mystery, where even the victims are a cause for hysteric. Andrews manages the difficult task of being delightful and grim, and manages to keep this confection of a plot spinning in the air right up to the end. This kind of material is tough to write, since it is always in danger of interminable cuteness.
In the Midst of Death Lawrence Block's early Matthew Scudder novels are considerably shorter and less complex than later entries in the series. Scudder was still drinking during this time period and here he makes his first acknowledgement that it might be getting out of control. The plot is intriguing, a dirty cop begins cooperating with an anti-corruption probe and is framed for murder. Scudder must answer two questions who did the frame up and why did the cop suddenly decide to become a rat? "In the Midst of Death" is one of the bleaker entires in the Scudder series both in terms of its outcome and for what happens in Scudder's personal life. It is not an essential entry in the series, but it is a good one.
In a Time of Treason The first volume "In the eye of Heaven" was a very promising draft of the series. It proceeded by small touches to brush the background of the story leaving many openings for the future volumes. The second one is more conventional and more suitable for the fans of fantasy with plenty of battle scenes and less complexity. Durand, the hero, takes part of many but gains little. As Fabrice Del Dongo in "Le Rouge et le Noir" (Stendhal) who sees a great battle from the point of view of the soldier, not the general, he is only a piece in a bigger game but a more and more important one. This subjectivity makes the proximity of the hero. However, in this case, the battle takes place simultaneously in gritty reality and dream which are always interacting. A well written series.
Hope to Die This injection of a second viewpoint is novel in a Matt Scudder novel, but it is done so perfectly if feels like a regular feature. The device works beautifully to keep the plot moving without the fragmentation and confusion that result when multiple viewpoints are poorly used. I don't think I have ever seen it done better in modern detective fiction. Block minimizes all distractions (at the cost of some of his usually exceptional characterizations), keeping the reader focused on the comparative workings of Scudder's own analytical mind and the machinations of his insane opponent. A subplot about the sudden death of Scudder's ex-wife and his relationships with his sons is introduced and allowed to run its course, but seems purely peripheral to the main plot. This and a few other threads lead me to believe that this tale is not completely done and that we can expect a continuation. If so it will be another unexpected deviation from formula. If Block has set out to prove that he can still be fresh after 25 years of writing the stories of Matthew Scudder, he has done an admirable job. I think even the most jaded fans will enjoy this book. Newcomers need have no fear.
Friendship Cake This is one of the most charming novels I've read in recent years. More than that, it is a satisfying, complete story of women's friendships that manages to avoid becoming sticky-sweet in the process. The author is to be commended for avoiding melodrama and cloying conclusions. I came to know and love each character in this book. Hinton's use of recipes, by the way, goes far beyond gimmickry each recipe is a true reflection of its owner's personality, and the "cookbook" unifying plot of the novel further justifies their use. I would love to see sequels continuing the lives, loves, and misadventures of the delightful damsel denizens of Hope Springs, North Carolina!
Everybody Dies (Matthew Scudder #14) I read "Everybody Dies" in a single sitting, and was as involved in the story as I have been in any of Block's previous Scudder novels. I certainly think that this book is an improvement over the last couple of stories, which lacked intensity and the edgy, fascinating Scudder we have grown used to. While "Everybody Dies" may ultimately lack the haunting power of the best entries in the series for my money, "Eight Million Ways to Die," "When the Sacred Ginmill Closes," and "A Dance at the Slaughterhouse," it has some of the same grim intensity as those books. At their best, Block's Scudder novels almost enter the horror genre he walks a fine line between mystery, suspense, and outright terror. No one does this as well as he does. Block seems to be consciously trying to go back to what made his series work so well in this volume adding much more violence, raising the personal stakes for Scudder tremendously over the last couple of books, and having him explicitly reject the professional "respectablility" that somewhat alienated many of his longtime fans, I think, in the last couple of books. A minor criticism might be that we never get to encounter the main villain directly, but the action in the final sequence is so explosive and riveting that I didn't even realize that until later.
Devil May Ride (Ghost Dusters #2) Sadie Novak has a unique gift, she can see and talk to the dead, that isn't so bad, the troubling part comes in that her company is into specialized cleaning. She and her business partner Zack clean up crime scenes. Donning haz-mat suites they clean the fluids and grizzle that is left behind at every unattended death. She can see everyone that has died, everyone that is except suicides and the one person that she can not see is her brother Brian, who killed himself and no one knows why, leaving a big hold in Sadie. But in a strange way this is his story. It doesn't start out that way and we learn more then you every wanted to know about bikers (hence the title) and cults. But most importantly, we learn how gifts that appear to be anything but, can save your soul and make you whole again. That sounds a little heavy for this very good book, but you really learn a lot more about these characters then we were introduced to in the first book. I certainly hope that Ms. Roberts continues on with this series because I'm definitely hooked on this ghost busting angle of hers. I highly recommend.
Even the Wicked: A Matthew Scudder Novel
Larry Block has published so many novels over the past 35 years or so that you cannot expect all of them to be masterpieces. He does have a few in that category. While this effort is not one of those, it is enjoyable enough. His aging, alcoholic-in-recovery private snoop Matt Scudder is 55, married and stable in this outing. A mysterious killer knocks off a few nasty guys in NYC, and Scudder ends up solving the case. Unfortunately the reader gets to the right conclusion at the same time as the private eye, which robs the saga of its punch. However, the show is not over, because a copycat takes the stage and creates a second case for our hero to resolve, at the same time that he is puzzling out still another, unrelated killing. While Scudder is never in any personal danger in this book, a situation most earlier reviewers lament, I still liked it. He's a complicated but nice guy, with a nice wife and a semi-adopted son who adds sizzle to his life. If you like your mysteries to avoid gristly murder details and personal danger for the lead character, this book will please you. Be warned: other entries in the Scudder series are much more graphic and have more tension, so if that's what you prefer, start with "A Walk Among the Tombstones" or one of the other, earlier novels.
Eight Million Ways to Die (Matthew Scudder Mysteries) "Eight Million Ways to Die" is a classic piece of hardboiled detective fiction that represents a turning point in the life of its hero, Matthew Scudder. Early on in the narrative, Scudder is told frankly by a young doctor after a two-day alcohol blackout, "if you drink, you'll die." Scared by the warning, Scudder takes a case he doesn't want in a despearte attempt to distract him from alcohol. His struggles with the bottle come across very real and are harrowing to behold. The case is a good one as well with Scudder attempting to track the manaical killer of a hooker who was trying to leave the life. Death is an ever constant theme, with the book's title being a riff on the old literary saying "there are eight million stories in the naked city." This book is everything great private detective fiction should be dark, cynical, violent and lonely. Frankly, I like Scudder better during this period than later on after he sobers up. If you agree, you'll love this book.
Deadly Notions (A Southern Sewing Circle Mystery) Elizabeth Lynn Casey once again brings her readers a charming, fun-filled tale that combines a little mystery, a little romance, and a whole lot of friendship. The combination guarantees an absolutely pleasurable read! Grab a tall glass of sweet tea, a cookie or two and enjoy a trip to the South with "Deadly Notions," where the ladies are feisty and the murders are spine-tingling!
Deadly Dreams (Mindhunters) This is a fascinating story as Risa is tortured by her mistakes and is trying to get back on her feet. I enjoyed the romance between her and McGuire and how he starts to believe in her abilities. They made a great team and the story felt like a real, gritty investigation. I am an avid reader of mystery and while the ending was satisfying, it didn't have as many plots twists in the storyline as I hoped. What I really enjoyed were the intriguing paranormal talents that Risa had. I wished that the author had written more about them!
Deadly Caress True fans voraciously devouring Joyce's series would know the fascination lies in her knack to galvanize with twists and secrets. This time is no different with exciting developments like the return of Bragg's wife Leigh Anne and Hart's relentless pursue along with Francesca's sister Connie handling her marital crisis. However Deadly Caress breaks free of the archetypal romance mold with its ensemble of flawed and honest characters who are subjected to temptations and desires. Rick Bragg, the central protagonist is a hypocrite with confused feelings for his wife and Francesca Calder Hart who was portrayed as villainous in the series is refreshingly honest and honorable. The romance is complicated with hidden passion and recognisably realistic to shed the perfunctory soap-opera cloak. Joyce has outdone herself this time round with finely-paced suspense and dimensioned characters to engage us to the Deadly series. It's a fatal attraction.
Collision Course One of my favorite things about this book was the way the author played with the language and jargon of the galaxies (space pirates ahoy!). How could you not fall for a sentence like "Her timing was worse than a sipkaswine accidentally wandering into a Joppan cookout"? No idea what it means, but I love the fact the author doesn't explain and just throws it into the mix!
Butter Safe Than Sorry: A Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery I used to love this series and have read every book in it. I started getting a little tired of it a few books back and this book made me decide to not buy any more of the series. I thought the author would "fix" the problem somewhere and it would get better again, but alas, it hasn't. The main character has been getting too silly in last few books...this is the problem. She started out as humorous but has become tedious in her slapstick comedy ways. The plots are getting unbelievable as well. I can't give away the plot without doing a spoiler alert here but trust me, you will be aggravated with it also. And the ending...well, has the author decided to end the series or what? You don't do an ending like this if you want your readers to keep on reading the series. I'm really peeved over this ending.
Blood Mask: A Novel of Suspense
The "blood mask" of the title, a frozen sculpture constructed out of human blood, becomes a potent symbol of Aunt Drewe's vain desire to affix some permanence to the physical self, rather than the spiritual self, through the medium of art. In this way, the physical loss of Aunt Drewe becomes almost inconsequential. The destruction of the blood mask might signal her physical death, but also her spiritual liberation. The talented author of this book impressively combines a fast-paced, complex drama with intellectual debates about the nature of reality and the meaning of art.
Before Cain Strikes The sequel to While Galileo Preys is a fast-paced thriller as the audience anticipates a shoot-out at the OK Corral in this case a bed and breakfast. The villains are psychopaths being mentored by one of the most disturbing predators in years Professor Cain 42 teaches a lesson that "family values" can be negative. Family values are also an issue for Esme and Rafe as he makes a powerful argument that she inadvertently takes her work home, endangering her family. Although the ending is over the top of the Keystone Cops, readers will enjoy this insightful look at how much an agent sacrifices to do her job legally with due diligence.
Alien Enigma In Hollywood, Michael Bay + Large Budget = Predictable Results. Science fiction is somewhat similar throw in a scruffy but lovable band of explorers/mercanaries, pit them against some nasty adversaries and you get predictable results. However, much like a Michael Bay flick, this is by no means a masterpiece. Besides the previously noted grammar and spelling issues there are mile wide plot holes and a major lack of character development.
Having said that, I still found this book immensely enjoyable. The pace and tone are good, the overall premise is VERY promising for the sequels, and its lack of originality is compensated by a lively writing style and concise narrative. The author avoids the worst pitfalls of science fiction, the meandering monologues and philosophical abstraction of more established writers. There is no over thinking this book, (Ben Bova, I'm talking to you,) it is what it is and as such it's enjoyable.

The Courage to Be Yourself: True Stories by Teens About Cliques, Conflicts, and Overcoming Peer Pressure Published: 2005-09-15 | ISBN: 1575421852 | PDF | 160 pages | 4 MB Cassandra is hassled by her friends for sitting with the “wrong” kids at lunch. Jennifer gets harassed because she’s overweight. Dwan’s own family taunts her for not being “black enough.” Yen is teased for being Chinese; Jamel for not smoking marijuana. Yet all find the strength to face their conflicts and the courage to be themselves. In 26 first-person stories, real teens write about their lives with searing honesty. They will inspire young readers to reflect on their own lives, work through their problems, and learn who they really are. It's a challenge to remain true to one's self in a world that encourages conformity to a narrowly prescribed norm. It is especially difficult when the individual is a teen. Here, Desetta presents 26 short essays from young people who have faced this challenge head-on and found ways to survive if not happily, at least tolerably. From a gay teen who is harassed by peers to overweight and unfashionable girls who are ridiculed because of their physical appearance; from an African-American teen who isn't black enough to an Arab American who is a target of hate after September 11, the selections cover the spectrum of being different or other. What the essays have in common is the willingness on the part of the contributors to accept that they cannot control how others view them but only how they perceive themselves. These young people demonstrate that by having the courage to be themselves, they are equipped to live without compromising their ideals. Though not all the stories have happy endings, readers who are struggling with similar issues will be comforted and perhaps inspired by the honesty and poignancy of these narratives.

Escape from the Land of Snows: The Young Dalai Lama's Harrowing Flight to Freedom and the Making of a Spiritual Hero Published: 2011-01-18 | ISBN: 0307460959 | PDF | 320 pages | 3 MB On the evening of March 17, 1959, as the people of Tibet braced for a violent power grab by Chinese occupiers—one that would forever wipe out any vestige of national sovereignty—the twenty-four-year-old Dalai Lama, Tibet’s political and spiritual leader, contemplated the impossible. The task before him was immense: to slip past a cordon of crack Chinese troops ringing his summer palace and, with an escort of 300, journey across the highest terrain in the world and over treacherous Himalayan passes to freedom—one step ahead of pursuing Chinese soldiers. Mao Zedung, China’s ruthless Communist dictator, had pinned his hopes for total Tibetan submission on controlling the impressionable Dalai Lama. So beloved was the young ruler—so identified with his country’s essence—that for him to escape might mean perpetual resistance from a population unwilling to tolerate an increasingly brutal occupation. The Dalai Lama’s minders sent word to the Tibetan rebels and CIA-trained guerrillas who waited on the route: His Holiness must escape—at all costs. In many ways, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was unprepared for the epic journey awaiting him. Twenty-two years earlier, government search parties, guided by prophecies and omens, had arrived at the boy’s humble peasant home and subjected the two-year-old to a series of tests. After being declared the reincarnation of Tibet’s previous ruler, the boy was brought to Lhasa to learn the secrets of Buddhism and the ways of ultimate power. Forced in the ensuing two decades to cope with aching loneliness and often stifling ritual—and compelled to suppress his mischievous personality—Gyatso eventually proved himself a capable leader. But no previous Dalai Lama had ever taken on a million Communist Chinese soldiers bent on stamping out Tibetan freedom. To keep his country’s dream of independence alive by means of a government in exile, the young ruler would not only have to brave battalions of enemy soldiers and the whiteout conditions waiting on the slopes of the Himalayas’ highest peaks, he’d have to overcome a different type of blindness: the naïveté intrinsic to his sheltered palace life and his position as leader of a people who considered violence deeply taboo. His mind made up, the young Dalai Lama set off on his audacious journey to India while behind him a Chinese army rolled over Lhasa, its advance hunter patrols in fierce pursuit of the man they most coveted. The 14th’s escape was an act of daring and defiance that represented Tibet’s last hope, and so the world watched, transfixed, as the gentle monk’s journey unfolded. Emotionally powerful and irresistibly page-turning, Escape from the Land of Snows is simultaneously a portrait of the inhabitants of a spiritual nation forced to take up arms in defense of their ideals, and the saga of an initially childlike ruler who at first wore his monk’s robes uncomfortably but was ultimately transformed by his escape into the towering figure the world knows today—a charismatic champion of free thinking and universal compassion.
Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer: The Hidden Power of Beauty, Blessings, Wisdom, and Hurt Published: 2006-01-01 | ISBN: 1401906834 | PDF | 224 pages | 3 MB “There are beautiful and wild forces within us.” With these words the mystic, St. Francis, described what ancient traditions believed was the most powerful force in the universe—the power of prayer. For more than 20 years, Gregg Braden, the best-selling author of The God Code, has searched for evidence of a forgotten form of prayer that was lost to the West following the Biblical edits of the early Christian Church. In the 1990s, he found and documented this form of prayer still being used in the remote monasteries of central Tibet. He also found it practiced in sacred rites throughout the high deserts of the American Southwest. In Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer, Braden begins by describing this ancient form of prayer that has no words, or outward expressions. Then for the first time in print, he leads us on a journey exploring what our most intimate experiences tell us about our deepest beliefs. Through case histories and his personal sharing, Braden explores the wisdom of these timeless secrets, and the power that awaits each of us, just beyond our deepest hurt!

Beauty Pays: Why Attractive People Are More Successful 2011 | ISBN: 0691140464 | EPUB, MOBI | 228 pages | 3,7 MB Most of us know there is a payoff to looking good, and in the quest for beauty we spend countless hours and billions of dollars on personal grooming, cosmetics, and plastic surgery. But how much better off are the better looking? Based on the evidence, quite a lot. The first book to seriously measure the advantages of beauty, Beauty Pays demonstrates how society favors the beautiful and how better-looking people experience startling but undeniable benefits in all aspects of life. Noted economist Daniel Hamermesh shows that the attractive are more likely to be employed, work more productively and profitably, receive more substantial pay, obtain loan approvals, negotiate loans with better terms, and have more handsome and highly educated spouses. Hamermesh explains why this happens and what it means for the beautiful--and the not-so-beautiful--among us. Exploring whether a universal standard of beauty exists, Hamermesh illustrates how attractive workers make more money, how these amounts differ by gender, and how looks are valued differently based on profession. He considers whether extra pay for good-looking people represents discrimination, and, if so, who is discriminating. Hamermesh investigates the commodification of beauty in dating and how this influences the search for intelligent or high-earning mates, and even examines whether government programs should aid the ugly. He also discusses whether the economic benefits of beauty will persist into the foreseeable future and what the "looks-challenged" can do to overcome their disadvantage. Reflecting on a sensitive issue that touches everyone, Beauty Pays proves that beauty's rewards are anything but superficial.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French on Your Own 1996 | 513 Pages | ISBN: 0028610431 | PDF | 33 MB Geared toward travelers and businesspeople rather than students, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French on Your Own combines many of the functions of a dictionary, phrase book, tour guide, and grammar handbook into one. The emphasis here is on practical considerations. Important grammatical points get tied into real-world situations such as getting a haircut or buying a dress, making it easy to remember subjects as abstruse as reflexive pronouns and irregular verbs. Vocabulary, grammar, and accompanying exercises come paired with "cultural tidbits" to help travelers decipher the intricacies of French language, cuisine, and institutions. One cautionary note: although this book bills itself as an idiot-proof guide to "Learning French On Your Own" and features a comprehensive pronunciation guide, it's best to round out your education with an audiotape or a few sessions with a native speaker, lest you come out sounding like, well, an idiot.
