Case Studies
Peter Todd, Business Development, apetito
“I entered the food industry in 2008 having completed a degree in Business Management. Since joining apetito as a Development Technologist, I learnt quickly from those around me and developed sound skills, but still craved further food processing knowledge to support my growing practical experience. This was how I first learnt of the Food Manufacturing Foundation Degree course at the National Centre for Food Manufacturing, which is part of the University of Lincoln. Taking this part-time course provided the perfect learning resource for me outside of work to help me develop a better understanding of food manufacturing and apply it during my role on a daily basis. I quickly progressed to the role of Product Development Manager where I managed a team of two staff. In January 2013 I spotted an opportunity to join the Canadian arm of apetito and I am now working there as the company's Business Development Manager, and enjoying it immensely. My advice to anyone considering a career in the food industry is that it is an excellent and varied industry which always offers new opportunities and challenges. The path I took in developing sound product knowledge through beginning my career as a Development Technologist, has given me the perfect platform to develop my technical skills and now that I am working in more commercially-led projects, I can reflect back on my Product Development days and use this experience to assist me in determining the feasibility and best approach to new projects.”
Catherine Cook Technical and Quality Co-Ordinator, Minster Fine Foods Ltd “After leaving school, I entered the food industry in 2004, joining Minster Fine Foods as an Administration Assistant. I quickly developed an interest in matters relating to food safety and quality. This was noticed by my managing directors, Ellyot Doyle and Ann Burbidge, who encouraged this passion and a position in the quality department became available to me. The new position provided me with the opportunity to develop my skills and I enrolled on the food manufacturing BSc degree course at the National Centre for Food Manufacturing, which is part of the University of Lincoln. The part time day release course enabled me to work full time and progress my career at Minster Fine Foods. The course provided me with the skills and understanding of matters relating directly to my new job role which I was able to apply on a daily basis. I quickly progressed at Minster Fine Foods and the sole responsibility of managing the day-to-day running of the quality department was given to me. I have since remained at Minster Fine Foods and still thoroughly enjoy my work. There are no two days which are the same and I am fortunate to work with a wonderful team as well as UK based customers and our European manufacturing colleagues. I would strongly recommend a career in the food industry as it provides you with a diverse range of areas in which you can specialise. My specialist subject is in European delicatessen meats such as Chorizo, Milano, Parma Ham, Bresaola etc. I was concerned that my specialist subject would restrain my learning at the university, however, I found that the lecturers were very accommodating and this fear was quickly overcome. I’ve been very fortunate to have met some wonderful people throughout my time at the university and have remained in contact with the lecturers and some fellow students since graduation. The degree was hard work but a fabulous experience and I can safely say that I miss the Holbeach campus!!”
