‘The service which I received from Mansfield Sand when refurbishing my Manege was extremely professional, I am delighted with my new Premier Fibre surface’

Sally Ann Smart International dressage rider

Mansfield Sand Company Ltd, are market leaders and experts in surface products for both Sports and Equestrian applications spanning two decades. Fibresand was originally developed and patented in 1996 and subsequently trialled and approved by The Jockey Club. It is reliably used by numerous manège, gallop and equestrian users all over the country. Southwell Racecourse in Nottinghamshire enjoys ‘round-the-year’ meetings regardless of the weather, thanks to the ‘all-weather’ characteristics of Fibresand. We have our own silica sand quarry in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, with our own specialist mixing and processing plant complete with ISO 9001 approved laboratory and testing facilities. A comprehensive range of silica sands for sports, landscaping and industrial applications is complemented by innovative products such as Fibresand for equestrian surfaces and sports pitches, Fibreturf for special landscaping areas and Fibrelastic for top-class football and rugby pitches. The caring and personal attention to detail we provide ensures that you will receive sound, cost effective advice when considering which products to use for your application, whether large or small. Innovators and leaders in fibre reinforced sand surfaces. The original fibre reinforced product was patented and first produced in 1985. It is based on a remarkably simple, but highly effective concept of using synthetic fibres to stabilise a silica sand in order to produce a free draining yet relatively firm, sure footing surface. The rot proof, polypropylene fibres stabilise the silica sand by providing a high degree of resistance to sand particle movement when the surface is subjected to compressive and/or shear forces from the horses’ hooves. The net result of this stabilisation or increase in cohesion is that the penetration of the horses’ hooves into the surface is restricted to a few centimetres, the actual depth of penetration being determined by the gait of the horse and also the condition of the surface.

Two grades are available

1. F45 The original Fibresand which has been well proven for over 25 years to provide a safe sure footing surface for all types of arenas, gallops and racetracks.

2. F55 A more recent grade based on slightly finer sand and reduced fibre content developed specifically to provide a cost effective Manege surface. Both products can be used alone or with a chopped rubber topping.

Leisure Sand Leisure Sand is a dark buff silica sand. It is produced at our hydro classification plant by a double-washing process, which creates a clean, free draining fine grade sand. A pure sand surface will ride deep and unstable (especially during dry periods) causing the horse to work through the sand rather than on top of it. The Leisure sand is not intended or recommended for use alone, however it is ideally suited as a base sand for onsite incorporation of a fibre stabilising product which will provide structure and stability to the sand. The fibre stabilised Leisure Sand is an excellent general purpose, cost effective surface which is very sure footing and free draining. Technical information and further advice is available on request. Please contact us for further details

Maintenance The ongoing maintenance of your Manege or Indoor arena surface is essential to its effectiveness and longevity. Mansfield Sand offers expert advice on how to keep your surface in the best possible condition all year round. Here are a few tips to get you started Regular, light harrowing or levelling of the surface should be carried out in order to maintain as level a surface as possible. This will keep the surface free from marked undulations particularly in localised low spots, e.g, track region, entrance gate region, and take-off and landing regions to practice jumps etc. It should be remembered that the water percolation rate through the sand to the base will gradually diminish with time. This is due to the lower layer of sand becoming compacted whilst the upper layer becomes contaminated with general dirt, airborne dust, horse droppings and leaf debris. Therefore deeper harrowing of the sand at periodic intervals is recommended to relieve lower level compaction and minimise the effects of organic residue build-up. This can be achieved by using a weighted spike harrow or a hydraulically controlled harrow. Regular surface maintenance and general housekeeping, which should include the removal of any horse droppings on a daily basis, will make a significant difference to the performance of the surface. A neglected surface may eventually result in an unusable Manege during adverse weather conditions. The outside ‘track’ region of a Manege will gradually but almost inevitably become more compacted than the rest of the surface and may even develop a ‘pan’ layer which will significantly reduce water drainage rates. This will depend, however on the intensity of use and its amount of organic residue that is trodden into the surface. Therefore, even in a well maintained arena it may be beneficial to replace the track region at periodic intervals.
