LOOKS BACK AT 2012 WITH Standard was issued before commencing. Kath Moulds, BRC Consultant from Linden Management (UK) Ltd and some of our customers felt that we weren’t so far away from gaining the accreditation as we already had rigorous procedures in place for our ISO accreditations. It was very pleasing to hear Kath’s comments regarding the commitment of the team, as with everything else, it’s the team’s collective efforts that have got us to where we are, and we’ve had some great feedback from customers on our achievement too. The work we carry out on the nested tray forming machine continues to take us into David Woodyatt, our Managing market sectors we had never Director comments, “We were imagined, and I’m sure this will very pleased to feature in Folding continue to be the case as Carton’s latest publication New Signing: second stream for our the use of plastics in and we’re very grateful for Heiber + Schröder CE1000 tray former packaging decreases their support. 2012 was further. The majority of these events were some time in the planning but the award was a nice surprise and a great night to boot.

TEAM FC HELPING OTHERS DONATING TO TREETOPS HOSPICE AT CHRISTMAS TIME This Christmas we chose once again to make a donation to Treetops Hospice in Risley, Derbyshire. In years gone by we have bought charity Christmas cards, but when we decided we would like to design our own cards, we didn’t like to think that a charity would no longer benefit so for every card we sent out we pledged to make a donation to Treetops, which is not only a local charity but one that is dear to the hearts of our Directors. Our donation this year was £150. If you would like to find out more about the fantastic work this charity does, their web address is www.treetopshospice.org.uk
WORLD’S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING Back in September we took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in support of Macmillan Cancer Support. We had planned an article on this for our November newsletter but ran out of space so although it’s old news we wanted to thank everyone who came along to sample our baking. We invited customers, friends, suppliers and neighbours to pop in on the morning of 28th September to have a tea or coffee and some homemade cakes. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event started back in 1990 when just one fundraising committee decided to hold a coffee morning where people could have a chat, a drink and enjoy a cake, as well as being able to make a donation to the cancer charity. The first national event took place the following year, and since then it has raised over £60 million for Macmillan Cancer Support. Last year alone a record £14,778,141 was raised. The coffee mornings, held across the UK, are now the charity’s biggest fundraiser in the calendar and they’re a fantastic way to enjoy a coffee with friends, family, customers, suppliers and work colleagues. We had a lovely time at our coffee morning, sampling some delicious cake and cookie contributions from staff and their offspring too. Cupcakes, fairy cakes, Victoria sponge, chocolate caramel shortcake, chocolate cake, coconut melting moments and carrot cake were all on offer, and we’re delighted to say that we raised £125. A big thank you to everyone who either made cakes or came to eat them!
TREETOPS HOSPICE GOLF DAY We supported the Treetops Hospice Golf Day at Morley Hayes Golf Club in Morley, Derbyshire last year, and this year we plan to enter a team of four to play in the event on 15th May, again on the Morley Hayes 18-hole, par 72 course. The event includes an evening meal, a charity raffle and team prizes for first, second and third places, along with prizes for nearest the pin, longest drive and a putting competition. For booking details please visit – www.treetopshospice.org.uk or telephone on 0115 949 6932.
THE MOVEMBER MEN OF fc cartons
This year a select group from fc took part in the increasingly popular fundraising event of Movember. As you may be aware, during the month of November lots of men join in this annual fundraising event by cultivating moustaches with varying degrees of success, as you can imagine. The aim of this event is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer. We set up a Just Giving page and managed to raise £70. According to the Movember website, since the idea first got off the ground in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 a whopping £184 million pounds has been raised, and that doesn’t include the total raised in 2012 as those figures haven’t yet appeared on the website. The Movember men of fc cartons from left to right are - Liam “Chunk” Finch, Dan Hawley, David Woodyatt, Liam Cox and Stef Klym.
DERBY TRAIL BLAZERS
We have been very pleased to be associated with local basketball team Derby Trailblazers in support of their new kit. Our Directors’ younger son Charlie Woodyatt plays in the under 14’s team and is in his second season with the team. Based at Noel Baker School, in Alvaston, Derby, the team has had an influx of new players this season but they remain in a reasonably strong position to end their season. INTERNAL PROMOTIONS We are delighted to announce two promotions in the company. The first is Machine Minder Chris Greensmith who has now taken on the additional role of team leader. Chris has been with us since 2004. Next we have Steve Furniss who joined us in November 2010 as a Trainee Machine Minder, and he has now completed his training on the nested tray forming machine. Liam Cox, our Operations Manager, gives some background. CHRIS GREENSMITH – Team Leader Photo: from left to right – Steve Furniss, Liam Cox and Chris Greensmith
OFF-SETTING OUR CARBON EMISSIONS 2013 will be the seventh year of tree planting for our company and we are continuing to offset our waste against tree planting. Our chosen woodland last year was Poppy Wood in Melbourne, Derbyshire as it is so close to us here in Castle Donington, and we have chosen the same scheme this year - supporting the planting of 17 trees. The woodland forms part of the Queen’s Jubilee Wood in the National Forest and it is actually now nearing completion with around 30,000 trees planted with the support of many people, particularly small to medium sized businesses. The site is situated on the northern boundary of the Forest and is popular with people travelling from Derby and Nottingham. It has been developed to show the different woodland types and management methods that can be seen throughout the 200 square miles of the National Forest. We are delighted to have been involved with this project.http://www.nationalforest.org
CARBON NEUTRAL STATUS UPDATE As regular readers of our newsletter may remember, we became a Carbon Neutral company last year and we’re not only continuing to reach the goals we set ourselves but we are surpassing them. From 2011 to 2012 we managed to achieve a further 25% reduction in our carbon footprint. * All calculations are based on the Defra guidelines
The Team Leader role came about because of the continued growth at fc cartons. We’ve had the addition of new machinery and newly acquired accreditations to comply with the requirements of our customers, and this in turn has required an increase in staff numbers and greater planning. It soon became apparent that I would need some assistance if we were to continue to provide the service levels our customers expect, as well as some additional support in managing a large team of production staff. I chose Chris for this role as he has numerous years of experience on the shop floor and has gained good product knowledge whilst being a gluing minder for some fifteen years. Chris also demonstrated all of fc cartons’ core values - care, ability, trustworthiness and job ownership, to name but a few. Chris will be Team Leader across all departments of the production facility, as well as overseeing our quality and hygiene standards. I look forward to working with Chris, and I see this as a progression not only for Chris and myself, but for fc cartons as a whole. STEVE FURNISS – Machine Minder Steve has been with us since November 2010, having already gained seven years experience in the carton industry with a previous employer. Shortly after he arrived we invested in a nested tray forming machine and Steve was given the opportunity to develop his skills further and train on the new machine. I have to say he worked tirelessly on getting this machine up and running, and it was his nononsense approach coupled with his ability and commitment that gave us the confidence to invest in a brand new machine. With the further development of Steve’s skills, the increase in demand for this type of carton and his willingness to work nights (along with other members of our team), he gave us the confidence to invest further and add another stream to the nester in order to increase production and turnaround time. I know that Steve is keen to move on to the gluing machines and the more complex cartons, and at the same time to help develop the skills of other members of the team on the nester.

TEAM TALK In the January transfer window we saw Mark Aubrey go to pastures new with a move back into the carton board sector and we all wish him well for the future. The new signing to the team was in the form of a good all-rounder Kieran Hollingworth, who joins the squad in the position of General Assistant. Kieran hails from Breaston, Derbyshire and first came to the notice of Liam Cox, our Operations Manager, when he was made redundant after completing a joinery apprenticeship. He lists his hobbies and interests as music and working out at the gym. We’re pleased to report that Kieran has settled into the team very well.
