CHANGE YOUR PERCEPTION.
Filtrate Eyewear is built on designing premium styles at an affordable price. After trashing and losing too many sunglasses to count, and handing over the hard earned $$$, we realized the need for an alternative. The challenge was to design a big dollar look with genuine quality... without you having to give up your paycheck. Price is no substitute for style, the choice is yours... we’ve just made it easier.
Come see us at Surf Expo and ASR trade shows.

O
n a Wednesday afternoon, I ring Pancho Sullivan. We’ve been trading missed calls and emails for the past week, trying to set up a time for an interview. But he’s a busy man these days and, regrettably, for reasons that most of us would rather not fathom. He’s father to a sick child, his daughter Kehau, was born with a congenital heart defect in September of last year. Faced with a mountain of medical bills—the condition requires a series of operations that begin in infancy and last until Kehau reaches her 20s—it was reported that Pancho was faced with a mountain of costs to pay for saving his daughter’s life. When the story broke across the surf world earlier this winter, our souls sank at the news. But in the wake of a somber story, the surf world and the North Shore opened their arms and wallets to help a man that has given so much to the sport. Longtime friend and business partner Myles Padaca helped set up a fundraiser for his daughter which received an onslaught of donations. If that weren’t enough, Aussie Dan Ross, who’s been competing on the WQS sans sponsor for the past year, donated his entire winnings from his semifinal finish at the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach to Pancho to the tune of $2,900. “She [Kehau Sullivan] needed it more than me,” Ross was quoted as saying.

Pancho Sullivan readies for the fight of his life Our respect and admiration for the big man began when Pancho Sullivan first came on to the scene. Building a rep for humility, grace and of course, power. Lots of power. Watching Pancho Sullivan hack the face off a wave and it’s hard not to deem him the most powerful surfer ever to walk the Earth. For years, his muscled frame donned the glossy pages of magazines the world over. He was captured on celluloid through Rip Curl’s Search films, imposing pure Hawaiian force on unsuspecting waves across the world. Coming of age amid an era of chop-hops and flick turns Pancho proved to be a beacon of strength. He was once deemed the “anti-flick” and built the foundation of his career freesurfing on the North Shore. And then, seemingly without much effort, he qualified for the World Tour out of the blue. We breathed a sigh of relief and Pancho didn’t disappoint, capping off his 2007 season on the World Tour in seventh place, a feat that would make many a career. And then his role as a father beckoned. Pancho replanted his roots at Pupukea and continued to wow us when the Northerlies boomed. Over his career, he’s been one of Hawai‘i’s favorite sons, someone we’re all proud to say calls these islands home. Humble, soft-spoken. The embodiment of aloha mixed with unfiltered power. He’s done us proud. And now, in his time of need, let’s return the favor. Read on for the exclusive interview about Pancho’s life in 2009 and how you can help his family’s cause.
