In 2003 FMI was formed to primarily handle imports from China and by 2004 FMI had expanded to include imports and exports to/from many areas and carrying for various sized freight forwarders including some multi-nationals. Over time relationships were built with some of the biggest agents in their respective countries leading to the formation of CMI. While groupage containers (of LCL) form the backbone of the company there has been rapid growth in FCL services during the past 3 years leading to improved buying rates with carriers and better rates for clients. In under 13 years the Daygard Group has become one of the largest independent NVOCCs in the UK covering all major trade lanes and with more direct weekly services than most in the market. After unloading, the empty containers were delivered to Pentalver depot in Southampton, ready for the transformation. The Pentalver design team members put their heads together to visualise the look of The Pen-Tavern. After coming up with a CAD impression of the final layout, the work started. The containers were moved to their fully covered workshops and underwent a total transformation. Side walls were removed, frames were fabricated and attached, apertures cut, lining and sealing added. The blank canvas for The Pen-Tavern was ready. Next, the cladding was fabricated and with the help of local set design company Spacial Installations the fixtures and fittings began taking shape. The Pen-Tavern was born.

he USA is the land of opportunity and this is certainly the case in the logistics sector.

Due to historical and cultural links the USA and the United Kingdom have always been major trading partners, which creates opportunities aplenty in the freight and logistics sector. However, despite sharing a language, it can be a market which is both complex and entirely different from other markets across the globe. For example, much of the business is bought and sold on a door to door basis. When managing the supply chain not only is the forwarder concerned with the end to end movement, but also all parties who operate alongside. It could be said that the service to and from the US is a truck service

of different ports, each with their own customs and regulations so when moving freight to inland destinations having the right representation and knowledge can be a real advantage. Another factor to consider when shipping to the US is selecting the correct entry point as this can have a direct impact on cost savings and supply chain efficiencies. In 2015, there was a shut-down at Long Beach port on the west coast which led to severe congestion. This had a huge impact on importers, especially for the transpacific trade from Asia who use this port as the main entry point into the US. Many decided to switch service to New York on the East Coast incurring longer transits and rail cargo across country. This came at an additional cost but in overall terms led to a more reliable service as a result. Recently, the situation at Long Beach has improved, opening up to importers once more.

EXECUTIVE SEARCH

F

orwarding Jobs work on an international scale for all

of their clients, assisting them with their assignments, currently placing executives and management teams into all

departments in the globe’s leading companies. At ForwardingJobs the definition of Executive Search is the process of identifying candidates without dependence on advertising and without reliance on a database. This includes a research-based service which requires no prior candidate knowledge and a targeted recruitment solution which directly identifies and attracts the best suited people to an opportunity. Many people believe that headhunting can be elitist and confine their efforts only to top-level roles for city board rooms. However, at ForwardingJobs they have worked successfully with a range of high-level clients, securing individuals for midmanagement through to board-level roles. Their service is typically utilised when quality candidates are not available on the open job market and when the best possible candidate is required, not the best available. It is also beneficial when other recruitment methods have failed or there is a highly specialist role with narrow requirements and where confidentiality is necessary.

•• 3 very serious infringements

•• Exceeding the permitted maximum length of a vehicle by up to 20% •• Vehicle speed limitation device not fitted by an approved workshop

An accumulation of 3 serious offences (for example exceeding weekly driving time by up to 5 hours) per driver per year will equate to one very serious infringement. The calculation uses the total number of offences divided by the total number of drivers to determine the 'per driver per year' average for an operator.

MINOR •• Exceeding daily driving time by less than 1 hour •• Exceeding weekly driving time by up to 4 hours •• Failing to take minimum required daily rest by up to 1hr.

The Traffic Commissioner’s investigation will aim to reassess whether the operator or transport manager is of good repute which may lead to sanctions against either or both of them, including revocation of their licence. Operators will wish to take note of the new league table and review compliance. They may also wish to make sure their employment contracts and policies clearly point out these forms of transgression as misconduct or gross misconduct.

As one of the leading independently owned UK Freight and Logistics organisations Horizon International Cargo has the knowledge and experience to ensure clients benefit from competitive and reliable services. With 12 offices in the USA and Europe Horizon has both the infrastructure, industry knowledge, systems and expertise to deliver trans-Atlantic and global supply chain requirements. We operate weekly air and ocean consolidations as well as a variety of FCL services. To support ever growing and complex supply chain requirements we provide an array of Logistics services. These include pallet storage, pick and pack, inventory management, re-working, e-commerce as well as a number of other value added services. Global and local visibility is facilitated through hiCloud. hiCloud has a range of modules to provide visibility across a wide scope of services. Either in isolation or by connecting these modules customers benefit from reliable, safe, fast and seamless end to end visibility.

Like everyone, we are always coming up against new regulations, new processes and new requirements for the US but we have learnt that most of these changes are not nearly as difficult to overcome as they may at first seem. In fact, we have known people to be put off trading with the US altogether because it has become ‘too much’, but here at Unity Logistics we like to try and keep things as simple as possible. We definitely do not know everything, but around 5% of the shipments we arrange travel either to or from the USA and, despite receiving some utterly bizarre requests, we always manage to come out the other side. Something worth noting for the US is that we have found air freight to be cheaper than sea freight in some cases and so now regularly cross reference these for smaller consignments at the quoting stage.

Samskip Logistics is proud to announce the next step in its ambitious plans. With a presence on the US market since 1994, Samskip Logistics has taken the next step by opening a new US head office in New York under the management of Mr. Paul Dean. For over two decades, the company has operated two offices in Norfolk, VA and in Seattle, WA. Samskip Logistics now plans to open more offices in the United States. All US-based staff will continue to perform an extended range of dry and reefer forwarding activities such as full (FCL) and less than (LCL) container loads, airfreight and warehousing. 'With over two decades of local expertise and a clear understanding of customer needs, the new office is the next step in strengthening Samskip Logistics's presence in the forwarding industry and further enhancing efficiencies.' Mr. Ásbjörn Gíslason, CEO Samskip Logistics

DB Cargo UK has launched its unique London Eurohub, the only facility of its kind connected to HS1, the European Rail Network and the UK Rail Network. The multimodal Eurohub development in Barking, London, can accommodate the unloading, preparation and distribution of finished vehicles, connecting production lines with the end customer. Although the site is designed to provide solutions for the automotive market, it is also capable of servicing both import and export volumes for all industry sectors. London Eurohub is co-financed by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility. Matthew Johanson, Head of Automotive at DB Schenker Rail UK, said: 'We are very excited about the range of benefits that we can offer to our customers through London Eurohub. THE LAST WORD...

W

hat an exciting month for FORWARDER magazine! We are now fully up and running with a dedicated

team and an ever-expanding readership. It has been

an absolute pleasure compiling content and speaking to you about your latest news and updates, there is always so much to talk about! Next month sees us look in depth at Brexit and the wider implications of an independent Britain. Leave or Remain? We’ll be asking a range of industry professionals their views. Our Regional Focus for the month of May looks at China and Scandinavia and our cover star is Kevin Brady of Woodland Global. We also have a round-up of all the best bits of Multimodal – you may even feature! If you would like to contribute to FORWARDER then we’d love to hear from you.
