W

e’re officially in Q4 of 2016 and most of us are already looking ahead to Christmas. At the forefront of thoughts going into this busy period

will be the ramifications of the Hanjin collapse on the shipping industry. Since the carrier went bust back in August it has been hard to gauge what the long-term impacts will be, with stranded vessels, climbing rates and unreachable cargo. Our job now is to capitalise on the opportunities presented instead of dwelling on the situation as it stands. We return to the shipping theme for our December edition, but for now we are concentrating on air freight and what an overwhelming response we’ve had. We have contributions from DHL, B&H

potentially a saving of up to 40% over four years, compared to our previous arrangements.

Jersey Post’s current vehicle fleet has over 110 vans the majority of which are on a rolling four-year warranty agreement. With at least 32 of the current fleet approaching this milestone, Jersey Post has worked with a number of local suppliers, namely Jersey Electricity, Freelance as well as Nissan, to source a solution that not only worked financially, but that also provided a good fit with the company’s CSR policy of minimising the impact of the delivery infrastructure on our island and the wider environment. The move will reduce Jersey Post’s carbon footprint by 35 tonnes a year, as each van’s emissions will reduce by around 95%. The acquisition of 15 e-NV200s is just the start of the de-carbonisation of Jersey Post’s 110-vehicle fleet as the utility intends to replace other diesel vehicles as and when they come to the end of their warranty.

Whilst our services both short sea and deep sea are highly successful, we identified that, due to a fairly turbulent past, shipping to Africa was a ‘destination of concern’ to many UK exporters. Shipments were normally on a C&F basis to quay only and there were legitimate apprehensions regarding cargo safety and onward transport. As a member of the ALN, we are able to address these concerns by offering through bills of lading to most destinations backed by our agents who can offer best advice based on their local knowledge. Exporting to Africa is not just about finding the right method of shipment or route. Each country has its own regulations, restrictions and documentary requirements and it is this ‘failure to comply’ that can result in delays or even cargo seizure. In short, the expertise

AIR FREIGHT FOCUS

A

s long as there have been aircraft flying around in the atmosphere there has been a need for people with the skills and know-how to repair them. Whether it’s the

original Wright Flyer from days gone by or a modern day 747, planes are, at their core, man-made machines that need constant upkeep. The commercial air industry can seem like a well-oiled machine to those of us who board a plane in Liverpool and disembark in Madrid without a hitch. To people in the know, however, the reality can be very different. So, what happens when things don’t go exactly to plan? This is where AOG specialists really come into their own. According to Airbus China, the tangible economic impact of having an A380 grounded due to technical problems is €925,000 per day. That’s the equivalent of 30 new Range Rover Evoques or spending 8 months in the Prince of Wales suite at the Ritz! The need for a dedicated team to source parts, equipment and skilled engineers suddenly becomes abundantly apparent.

AIRCRAFT ON GROUND! 28

FORWARDER magazine

WHAT IS 'AIRCRAFT ON GROUND?'

A

ircraft on Ground or AOG is a term in aviation maintenance indicating that a problem is serious enough to prevent an aircraft from flying. Generally there is a rush to acquire the parts to put the aircraft (A/C) back into

service, and prevent further delays or cancellations of the planned itinerary. AOG applies to any aviation materials or spare parts that are needed immediately for an aircraft to return to service. AOG suppliers refer qualified personnel and dispatch the parts required to repair the aircraft for an immediate return to service. AOG also is used to describe critical shipments for parts or materials for aircraft 'out of service' or OTS at a location. Mitigation of AOG status: When an aircraft 'goes AOG' and materials required are not on hand, parts and personnel must be driven, flown, or sailed to the location of the 'grounded A/C'. Usually the problem is escalated through an internal AOG Desk, then the Manufacturer's AOG Desk, and finally competitors' AOG desks. All major air carriers have an 'AOG Desk'. This desk is manned 24/7 by personnel trained in purchasing, hazardous materials shipping, and parts manufacturing / acquisition processes. AOG personnel are trained to 'loan' or 'borrow' spare parts from other air carriers, per FAA/EASA etc. regulations. AOG personnel work in conjunction with their carriers' maintenance operations department, supporting aircraft maintenance with all parts or material requests very rapidly. There are two ways of achieving this: by local engineering support or by support flown out base. Source: Wikipedia

imes have changed since the Wright brothers first flew back in 1903; you can now catch a flight anywhere in

We spoke with Gary Magee at AOG Freight 247 about the role of a global AOG network and where they think they add value.

How was the network conceived? AOG Freight 247 was formed in 2008 after a consortium of freight forwarders got together and came up with the concept. The aim was to have a network of small/medium freight forwarders working together to compete with the multinationals, specifically within the niche aerospace and time-critical market.

How many members do you have currently? We currently have 85 members covering 500 locations all occupying their own country or territory exclusively.

Can you talk me through the process from receiving an enquiry through to delivering the product? Once an enquiry is received through our website it will go directly to one of our network members who will respond immediately. The member will make contact with the shipper or vendor and the shipment will be expedited door-to-door: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

What’s next for the network? A new interactive modern-style website will be launched in autumn 2016. The website will be more industry focused. Vendors and shippers will have direct access to our members through a new regional ‘Emergency contact’ AOG 24 hour helpline. A quote request form is also a new interactive feature that will be integrated into the website. This will service the members with more business and increase the profile of the AOG network. We also plan to exhibit at aviation and industry-related exhibitions globally to enhance the image and reputation of the network.

The cargo is manufactured in the USA and China and we are responsible for door-to-door movements. We handle the complex customs process and paperwork that is required for delivery as these products are high-value and have tight deadlines. Failure to meet a deadline creates

a non-conformance, which has to be avoided at all costs.

What about mining? With regards to mining, Ligentia handle a project for a well-known mining company into West Africa. We consolidate cargo in the USA and Europe and move the cargo by air and ocean DDP to the mining site. We have experienced operations staff handling the paperwork and customs formalities at origin and in-country. One of our tasks is to reduce the time taken for customs clearance at destination as this is where the delays generally occur, and ensure unnecessary duties are not incurred for products which are exempt from taxes. The cargo can be time and cost-critical as the mining could be suspended waiting for a new drill piece.

tailored to fit strategic objectives. Here are a few examples...

Consolidated air shipments move on a set schedule. An air consolidation service provider combines the cargo of several shippers together. By pooling this combined volume and transporting the shipments on a regular schedule, the provider can often secure better rates. Air charter service Few businesses intend to use air charter service regularly. But it can become an essential resource in a nimble, adaptable supply chain. Perhaps the transportation industry is disrupted by a natural catastrophe or strike, and truck and rail equipment is unavailable. Air charters offer a fast, flexible option for getting products to market on time. Chartering a whole plane gives you decision power on location and scheduling for the ultimate in achieving timely, flexible deliveries. It is also possible to procure a partial air charter. This is similar to an air consolidation option, where a company pays for some space on a chartered plane rather than the entire thing. It can be a good option when a shipper does not have enough freight to fill a plane, but still needs capacity.

42

FORWARDER magazine

HOW AIR CONTRIBUTES TO AN

OPTIMISED SUPPLY CHAIN

As these examples show, freight costs are just one factor to consider

when evaluating air freight service options. There are strategic reasons for incorporating air into your supply chain. Inventory carrying costs and the sales opportunities associated with being first to market are important considerations for shippers. As airlines

use more fuel-efficient cargo fleets, they also make contributions to

changing the cost equation. It is also important to acknowledge that securing certain air services can be extremely difficult without the

right relationships. Working with a financially strong provider who

offers both committed and transactional capacity options is vital.

It is also important to note that air consolidation service providers

must be large enough to have regular shipments of consolidated air freight, or delays can result. The solution to this is to work with a company that has the scale, capital, relationships, and knowledge to work with airlines, move planes, and resell space (especially for partial charter service) so you can deliver your products as planned. For a better understanding of air cargo, read the new white paper, Optimizing your supply chain with air cargo, which takes a deeper look at the many facets and benefits of air cargo. Of course, there had been trade with these countries before their amalgamation into the EU, but this was more difficult and very few forwarders would venture so far, leaving the market for those few companies that had a foothold in the area already. Once the barriers came down though, it was easier for the traditionally Western European carriers to introduce new services to the huge potential market that had just been opened. The problems that occurred in Russia and Ukraine in 2014 had ripple effects across the region, and the trading embargoes and regulations that followed meant huge upheaval for companies working and selling goods in the area. As a consequence any freight companies that carried these goods were also affected, so having your finger on the pulse and the ability to react quickly allows you to have the edge over the competition.

WANT TO KNOW MORE? Further information can be found at www.eurogate.co.uk

So, there are still many challenges to trading and moving freight, but this is not to say that Eastern Europe should be avoided altogether. There is much to be optimistic about – the huge investment in recent years in infrastructure projects has meant a significant increase in the quality of road networks, allowing for the huge increase in the volume of traffic. Investments in local logistics infrastructure mean that with the right knowledge the highest levels of service can now be provided throughout the region. Significant CO2 and cost savings can be made by making good use of new multimodal options which are now becoming more widely available. Once again, the importance of local knowledge and communication cannot be underestimated – finding the most efficient way to carry freight is essential when looking for that small commercial advantage that we all need to be successful. Expectations of service quality to this area 25 years ago may have been relatively low, but this is no longer true today. With the right partners, the levels of service are as good as those of the more traditional, long established Western European carriers which can only serve to boost the confidence of companies looking further east to expand their export operations. The harmonisation of Eastern European countries with their Western counterparts is well underway, but still has some way to go. Using the expertise of forwarders that have experience in the area is, as always, advantageous, particularly for those companies looking to do regular business within the region. With the looming uncertainty of Brexit, having the inside track when communicating with the largest growth area in Europe can give you the edge that can be the difference between getting and retaining business, or finding yourself being left behind.
