rexit, Brexit, Brexit…it’s dominating discussion this month as we see real leaps being made toward a solid action plan. Yes, we are braving it alone, but there are still plenty of

creases to iron out. Will we still have access to the single market? Can we negotiate better trade deals than we have currently? This month I’ve asked industry experts to chime in with their views, along with trade body and government guidance. Hopefully this uncertainty will make way for a more stable future. Who knows?

In the current political climate of alienation and dissatisfaction with the status quo and political elites, support for new ‘walls’ has never been more vocal. THE 12 KEY POINTS, AS LISTED IN THE WHITE PAPER, ARE:

The government has released a white paper (2 Feb 2017) detailing the Prime Minister’s plans for a UK exit from the European Union with an emphasis on free trade and securing new trade agreements.

1. Providing certainty and clarity – We will provide certainty wherever we can as we approach the negotiations. 2. Taking control of our own laws – We will take control of our own statute book and bring an end to the jurisdiction of the Court of Justice of the European Union in the UK. 3. Strengthening the Union – We will secure a deal that works for the entire UK – for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and all parts of England. We remain fully committed to the Belfast agreement and its successors. 4. Protecting our strong and historic ties with Ireland and maintaining the Common Travel Area – We will work to deliver a practical solution that allows for the maintenance of the Common Travel Area, whilst protecting the integrity of our immigration system and which protects our strong ties with Ireland. 5. Controlling immigration – We will have control over the number of EU nationals coming to the UK. 6. Securing rights for EU Nationals in the UK, and UK nationals in the EU – We want to secure the status of EU citizens who are already living in the UK, and that of UK nationals in other Member States, as early as we can. 7. Protecting workers’ rights – We will protect and enhance our existing workers’ rights. 8. Ensuring free trade with European markets – We will forge a new strategic partnership with the EU, including a wide reaching, bold and ambitious free trade agreement, and will seek a mutually beneficial new customs agreement with the EU. 9. Securing new trade agreements with other countries – We will forge ambitious free trade relationships across the world. 10. Ensuring the UK remains the best place for science and innovation – we will remain at the vanguard of science and innovation and will seek continued close collaboration with our European partners. 11. Co-operating in the fight against crime and terrorism – We will continue to work with the EU to preserve European security, to fight terrorism, and to uphold justice across Europe. 12. Delivering a smooth, orderly exit from the EU – We will seek a phased process of implementation, in which both the UK and the EU institutions and the remaining EU Member States prepare for the new arrangements that will exist between us.

Q A

How do you maintain margins in a tight industry? Sometimes with great difficulty, to an extent ours is a volume game where we need to generate volume in order to create economies of scale and keep our costs down. However more and more now we strive to increase productivity and efficiencies in all aspects throughout the business. One example of this would be in our IT and online services and building EDI connections with clients. Whilst controlling cost is vital we also take the view that we need to safeguard the mechanisms that maintain the service, so we need to work with suppliers where we can guarantee this. It’s always our primary focus as price is always negotiable but the standard of service is not. Generally, it’s a case of

chain failures and provide options if disruption does occur.

While most types of freight can be consolidated, there are some commodities that do not make good candidates for consolidation: •• Fragile, bulk commodities, oversized •• Temperature controlled product •• Commodities especially prone to customs exams (e.g., cars, boats, and jet skis) •• Hazmat freight can be problematic on some routes (e.g., lithium batteries) At first glance, it might not immediately make sense for uncrated, heavy pumps that have hydraulics with jagged edges to be a candidate for consolidation. Freight like this can still move in consolidations. However, it is likely the shipper will pay for all the space in the container if floor to ceiling is required. A skilled freight forwarder will have the experience (and high volumes) to combine this type of dimensional, dense freight with lightweight cargo like pillows or mannequins—freight that’s small and light enough to be placed on top of heavy types of freight to truly maximise the use of the entire shipping container.

screening capabilities can offer greater care in handling and more flexibility in consolidating. 3. What are your average transit times for consolidations in specific lanes? Forwarders may offer direct ocean consolidation only to a few destinations. Moving freight in those common, high volume lanes can be handled by many. If a shipper moves ocean freight in the many less-common lanes, they should look for a consolidator that has gateways and systems in place to handle and control these lesscommon lanes without sacrificing service and control. 4. Can you easily accommodate unexpected routeing changes for consolidated freight? This question is especially important for businesses that experience frequent routeing anomalies—the need for late cutoffs for freight, unexpected demand, or a need to expedite—to make sure the freight forwarder is flexible enough to accommodate such changes. I’m Sam Wilding, one of the senior consultants at Headford U.S.A. Having specialised in the American market for around 18 months, I quickly built up a strong portfolio of clients and would say that I have found my niche in sales and senior appointments across the whole of the U.S. I see myself as a relationship builder and someone who can provide connections and consultative guidance to both clients and candidates, helping to provide effective solutions for all involved – this has been instrumental to my success. Being a part of Headford has shown me that focusing solely on the forwarding industry has given me an unparalleled knowledge of what's on offer, which in turn gives me access to the industries top talent.

Europa Worldwide Group now employs around 600 people across 11 sites in the UK plus Hong Kong and is represented in 100 countries.

The aim of the initiative is to use the business’s 50 years of success as a springboard to support key causes close to the hearts of our staff. Since I acquired the company I have discovered that we are lucky to have so many kind-hearted and passionate team members who really care about raising money for causes that mean something to them and their families. They do this in their spare time, which is something I’m really proud of as an employer - so as part of our 50th celebrations I wanted to recognise their efforts with our 50:50 charity promise. The business will donate the amount raised by the first 50 employees who complete a sponsored event this year – which means we’re committing to donating up to £25,000. Andrew Baxter, Managing Director at Europa

The challenge will be open to everyone at Europa and will take place across the business’s UK branch network. Andrew added:

Showing our employees that we care about the

things they care about is central to our CSR policy at Europa, so the 50:50 charity promise was a perfect way for us to put this into practice. We are very excited to see how much money our FORWARDER magazine
