t’s March, the end of Q1 and the beginning of Spring. On Wednesday 8 March the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, revealed the latest budget and its implications for

the UK public. The main talking point seems to be the increase in national insurance contributions for the self-employed with an annual hike of up to £240. Our focus this month is Euro road as we consider the effects of Brexit on European hauliers and how the road freight product has developed, with input from Tony Shally at Espace and Chris Powell of Smith Bowyer Clarke. We talk to Nick Platts at Heathrow Airport to find out what his plans are for a more cohesive supply chain

after the jet landed in Canada. The unserviceable engine was then loaded onto the AN-124 and transported to East Midlands Airport, UK. It was important to get the new engine to Canada as soon as possible after the incident, and be flexible enough to stay on the ground for as long as was needed,

ANTONOV Airlines in the UK, and responsible for organising the flight. Remarkably, despite sitting on the ground for five days in those extreme temperatures, our AN-124 required no de-icing due to a lack of moisture in the air. The GE90, which is the most powerful turbofan engine in the world, measured 725cm in length, 378cm in width, and was 399cm high. It weighed 13 tonnes. The AN-124, with a payload of up to 150 tonnes, is one of the world’s biggest aircraft. ANTONOV Airlines also operates the world’s largest plane, which has a payload of 250 tonnes, the unique AN-225. Passengers and crew on board the Swiss International Air Lines flight from Zurich, Switzerland, were safely flown on to their destination in Los Angeles, USA, within hours of the emergency landing in Canada. INDUSTRY NEWS MULTIMODAL SPECIAL Logistics impacts every aspect of our lives. Everything we buy, eat, watch, drive and own has been moved by logistics. The Freight Transport Association (FTA) is the UK’s biggest transport trade body and represents members who move goods by road, rail, sea and air. Each of these modes has its own issues, challenges and legal requirements, and FTA is in the unique position of being able to offer support and advice to members who use any – or all - of these methods to transport goods throughout the world. FTA’s stand (4110) at this year’s Multimodal will give visitors the opportunity to talk to FTA experts about their own operations and find out more about membership of the Association.

The UK freight industry continues to be presented with a broad spectrum of challenges related to developments at home and abroad, leaving UK freight forwarders and logistics companies with plenty on which to focus their attention. Participants will be able to find out more about those challenges and what BIFA will be doing to help by visiting our stand. From recent changes to the EU Customs Code to the Home Office Haulier Accreditation Scheme. From the impact of ocean shipping alliances to the challenges of e-freight. From the future of rail freight to the development of airport capacity in the UK. Once again, I invite those making their way to Multimodal 2017 to visit us to say hello and let us explain why BIFA Membership can be a win-win for them!

CILT staff will be on hand throughout the three-day event at The NEC, Birmingham from 4-6th April and you are encouraged to visit us on Stand 6059 and learn why membership of CILT is the must have membership for all professionals involved in the movement of goods and people. The line up of speakers at our seminars will include experts from Heathrow Cargo, DB Schenker, Air Cargo Canada, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Transport for London. For more information visit www.multimodal.org.uk/seminars.

You are cordially invited to the Women in Logistics UK coffee morning on Wednesday 5 April at 11:00am. Convening in the Multimodal café for drinks and pastries, it’s a great opportunity to meet like-minded professionals in your industry. For more information visit womeninlogistics.org.uk or you can follow on twitter @womeninlogistics, @ruthwaring.

started in freight 27 years ago in Australia when I worked for the national coach company. We carried freight in the coaches and for a period I sold that freight service. mine went to work for FedEx in Singapore. At his leaving party he stood up in front of all of us and talked about his plans [to join FedEx] and I thought it sounded interesting so I applied. I got back into freight that way, through the air cargo route as an integrator joining their operation in Poyle and running the Heathrow depot for three years. One of my secondary duties at FedEx was to be on the board of a company called CFL, which is a vendor-neutral handling facility down in the cargo area. What’s it like working at Heathrow?

Q A

How do you make strategic decisions? It’s not a traditional business where you can wake up one morning and implement strategic decisions, it takes years. For most infrastructure projects at the airport, we work on an average 8-10 year cycle. The cargo strategy was designed following engagement and consultation with the industry

Whereas industry has cycles which ebb and flow, the airport runs full tilt every day of the year. Although we have 75,000 people working at the airport, only 6,500 are employed directly by Heathrow, so it’s a very big job to run one of the most complicated airports in the world.

One of the most complicated airports in the world?

Q A

How do you plan ahead? The tricky part for me is thinking about what the industry will be doing in ten years’ time so that I can cater for any big changes. We’ve got disruptors coming into the marketplace now, so I have to ask myself what’s it going to look like in the future and what do I need to plan for our infrastructure? ADVERTORIAL Contract logistics is multi-faceted and encompasses a wide range of products and services. The key to success is certainly preparation; it’s important to map the process from start to finish and recognise all the things that can potentially go wrong – would you agree?

How do you go about tackling a new customer? With any new customer a lot of preparation is required before a new operation is implemented. Firstly a scope of works is agreed upon and is treated as a working document throughout the process and this is aligned with the development of the service contract. There are a number of implementation meetings where we discuss critical items such as; product route to market, product handling,

We also understand that compliance is crucial in order for our customer to be able to collect cash so correct signed POD’s are vital to the success rate on collection. REGIONAL FOCUS You work with a number of aerospace, automotive and high-tech customers – what kind of expertise is required? Understanding customers’ supply chain is key to running a successful 3PL contract. To fully understand the supply chain however requires understanding of the industry it operates in. At NNR we have experienced staff from within these industries and know first-hand the challenges each one presents. This experience allows us to provide a diversity of supply chain solutions across a number of sectors. If you take the high-tech industry as an example, we understand that the supply chain is currently dynamic as global manufacturing bases are changing due to cost pressures from traditional locations like South Eastern China. NNR realise that operations should be ready to move with these changes and offer equalled operations on a global scale to support this. Other key challenges including security i.e. TAPA requirements, fast route to market, VMI, parts procurement and reverse logistics are all key services provided by NNR within this industry.

How do you choose providers to service these customers? Having a robust internal network, complemented by reliable, credible partners is crucial to providing NNR customers with the best level of service. As NNR is assessed on performance we are stringent with all partners and manage a number of metrics, whether it be timeliness through to accuracy of billing. Any partner representing NNR must demonstrate our commitment to service and share our values. In return we show loyalty and treat our partners with the same level of support. Our network enables us to provide multi-modal solutions across the supply chain including air, ocean, road (pallet, FTL), parcel and two-man delivery services to mention just a few.

LEWIS BUNN | General Manager

My name’s Lewis Bunn and I’m the General Manager for the U.S. market here at Headford. My team and I focus on finding reputable and reliable talent primarily for sales, management and senior executive roles for international and domestic companies alike. We currently work with around 14 of the ‘top 25’ forwarders as well as a vast array of SMEs, also. Whether you’re looking for a single, profitable individual to join the team, or a whole, self-sufficient team for a branch start-up operation in a new location to have an immediate impact, get in touch with me today to discuss your growth plans. SAM WILDING | Senior Consultant

I’m Sam Wilding, one of the senior consultants at Headford USA. Having specialised in the American market for around 18 months, I quickly built up a strong portfolio of clients and would say that I have found my niche in sales and senior appointments across the whole of the U.S. I see myself as a relationship builder and someone who can provide connections and consultative guidance to both clients and candidates, helping to provide effective solutions for all involved – this has been instrumental to my success. Being a part of Headford has shown me that focusing solely on the forwarding industry has given me an unparalleled knowledge of what's on offer, which in turn gives me access to the industries top talent. LUKE EDGINGTON | Recruitment Consultant

I’m Luke Edgington, Executive Search Consultant at Headford USA. We, as recruitment specialists in freight forwarding for the past 3 years, have gained considerable knowledge in all aspects of the freight forwarding industry, which has now been passed on to me. In my time with Headford I have built a large network within Chicago & New York, finding my rhythm and niche within sales & operation roles, entry level to senior. I take pride in building very strong, professional relationships with all my clients and candidates, and I have discovered a passion for finding candidates roles they can perform well within, and excel in their career. The final ruling is expected to be made later this year so keep an eye on our blog for further updates.

Of particular interest is the ongoing case of Vaditrans BVBA vs Belgium which is currently being considered before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). Belgium is one of the countries that prohibits drivers from spending weekly rest breaks in their vehicles. In this case, Vaditrans, a Belgian road transport company, has brought a claim against Belgium to challenge this rule and the associated penalties for violation. The main issue to be determined is whether the Drivers’ Hours Regulation 561/2006 should be interpreted to mean that the regular weekly rest breaks referred to in the Regulation must not be spent inside the vehicle.
