The international courier market has seen growth year on year due to its cost-effective, reliable and convenient methods of distribution and delivery to consumers. This meant that in 2015 the sector generated almost ÂŁ9 billion in revenue in and has continued to grow steadily over the last 2 years. It is estimated that volumes of parcel deliveries in the UK will increase by approximately 4% per annum, meaning international and UK courier services aren't showing any signs of slowing down.

FOREIGN DRIVERS CANNOT ESCAPE PAYING THE DART CHARGE SAYS RHA
T
he news that over one million non-UK drivers have managed to avoid paying the Dart Charge when travelling over the Dartford Crossing comes as little surprise to the RHA.
This issue was identified from the moment the Freeflow system
was introduced, and it is still a problem. Foreign drivers should pay: it’s as simple as that. It is very concerning that there are still hauliers making the crossing for free. Duncan Buchanan, Policy Director, RHA
Fines totalling more than £81 million have been passed on to a European debt recovery agency since the Dart Charge began in 2014. Highways England have stated that foreign drivers not paying their charge make up less than 1% of total crossings, but the fact of the matter is that the dodged fines can make up an enormous loss. We need enforcement to ensure that the appropriate Dart Charge is collected from all crossing users and the RHA considers it to be totally unfair that there are still many who are making the crossing free of charge. It is a great concern that we just don’t know just how many crossing users are dodging the charge.

For a large part of the last four years, growth was not the

growing the scale of the business, whilst achieving satisfactory levels of profitability, is the core strategy. In the last four years, the business has expanded the reach of its Road operation across key European countries by selecting the very best partners to work with, has developed its Air and Sea teams as competitive arms of the business and has invested in its Warehouse facilities, attracting major retail brands from across the globe. Andrew said:
As a result of the unfaltering commitment, dedication
and passion of the team, we are now placed very strongly. We’ve made significant changes to ensure Europa is in the best possible position for growth and to secure its future in a highly competitive global marketplace. The plan now is to continue to expand through organic growth and acquisitions, initially by buying a £20-60m turnover freight business within the next 12 months. Our goal is then to hit the £200m turnover mark by the end of next year. Obviously, these are very ambitious targets, however, we believe that we have the foundations in place to make it happen. Key milestones already achieved in the last four years include the creation and implementation of Europa’s brand new, bespoke IT system Leonardo - an investment of more than £2m – the launch of many new products and daily lines, a fiercely competitive recruitment drive to attract the very best talent in the industry and a focus on developing all of the business’s international markets. Andrew added:
We believe that we will continue to have strong
organic growth of around 25 per cent across the business this year and we are planning to start developing additional lines to the FORWARDER magazine

FJT LOGISTICS SHIPS OCEAN CRUISING TRIMARAN FROM VIETNAM TO NEW ZEALAND
F
TJ LOGISTICS, Pangea Member in New Zealand, has shipped a brand-new Ocean Cruising Trimaran constructed from light weight carbon fiber in Cat Lai, Vietnam to Auckland,
New Zealand. The Trimaran departed from Tan Cang – Cat Lai port, near Ho Chi Minh city, which is the biggest and most modern container port in Vietnam. The Trimaran was secured with a special tailor-made wood support saddle and shrink-wrapped for protection against damages during the whole journey. The packed Trimaran measured 18m long, 4.8m wide and 5.33m high, with a total weight of 10,000kg. The boat was stowed under deck on a platform of 8 40’ Flat Racks and departed on 25th July. It was shipped from Vietnam via Kaohsiung Port in Taiwan and finally arrived at Auckland on board M/V OOCL Savannah on 18th August. Once the Trimaran arrived to Auckland, FJT LOGISTICS coordinated the lifting and discharging operations as well as the delivery with a low bed truck to Silo Park boat yard, where the boat will be assembled and rigged. After sea trials are completed the ultimate Trimaran will begin cruising in the ocean.

EVA Logistics, one of the world’s largest supply chain management companies has enhanced its capabilities in Dublin with the introduction of a 15,000 square foot
temperature-controlled facility at its Dublin warehouse. The new building has been constructed as an insulated building-within-abuilding on the city's airport industrial park and will allow it to better serve customers with medical products requiring to be kept within a constant temperature range of 15-25 degrees. Temperature-controlled logistics is an increasingly important part of the Irish export market as life sciences manufacturing continues to grow in the country. This new addition to our service offering will enable us to store up to 2,100 pallets of medical products within the 15-25 degree temperature range and cater for growing numbers of customer enquiries where temperature-controlled storage is an essential part of their business.

SIX LARGE RTG CRANES FROM JAPAN TO TURKEY H
ANSA HEAVY LIFT has transported six rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, each weighing 135 metric tonnes and measuring 28.9 by 11.3 by 26.6 m, from Japan to Turkey.
All units were loaded onto the vessel HHL Kobe at the port of Saiki in southern Japan, with two of the cranes being discharged at the port of Gebze and the remaining four at the harbour of Gemlik, in Turkey. This was an unusually high number of RTGs being transported on a P2-800 vessel, compelling us to extend the deck as well as ensure there was sufficient space between the units, so that all cargo could be accommodated safely. Due to the sensitivity of the cargo units, additional precautions needed to be taken, including a motion response analysis to determine the effects of any accelerations on the cargo during the voyage. Strong co-operation between the crews and stevedores at the ports of loading and discharge ensured the project was executed seamlessly, within the tight timeframe that had been assigned. I knew the challenges to come. The relief, particularly after the Series A funding was secured, was because he was under considerable financial stress. The rise of the internet during the early 90s has led to the incredibly versatile ways in which we send and receive goods. Expert freight forwarders have created networks spanning the globe and with the evolution of transport this has meant that parcels can now be sent around the world in as little as one day. A win for businesses and consumers, and inevitable growth throughout the industry each year. has led to an incredible rise in online orders and a more diverse range of options when it comes to courier services. Resellers have made it possible for customers to quickly get a quote and have complex paperwork automatically generated for them, and the whole thing involves a far more cost-effective process of distribution. It has become so cost effective, in fact, that most smaller courier services can be seen as a cheaper alternative to some of the staples in the international courier game such as Royal Mail. Most would say that patience is a virtue. This isn’t always the case,

post office at an inconvenient time, in a place you can’t easily get to, to retrieve your urgent package. DPD is a great example of my previous points and overcoming these annoyances. Their drivers arrange their charges in the order they will be delivered, and scan them. Customers receive an automatic text message alerting them to the onehour window in which they can expect the parcel to arrive, or pick it up from a local shop. Soon shoppers will be given the chance to pick their own slot. This cuts out the dreaded 'we just missed you' by a significant amount. The next step for courier services has to be automated delivery. Amazon is at the forefront of this but before freight forwarders get excited at this thought there are still significant limitations that drone delivery and other techniques hold.
Economically speaking,
whilst you don't have to pay a drone for its labour, and admittedly the cost of building them is sure to come down in the future, they can't carry remotely as much as a Transit van. Yes, your iPhone can be delivered pretty quickly, but your sofa? We are a long way off that. Add in all the complications with other air traffic and the fact that, at the end of the day, sometimes people (or their neighbours) simply may not be in and you can see that this is an emergent practice that has some way to go. Perhaps using a tracking service, much like DPD, and some standard drop-off points and this will be the courier service of the future... Matt Dailly, Editor, FORWARDER magazine

Images are just as important as text
As well as complementing the efforts of the marketing teams of large companies, email marketing campaigns provide an excellent, cost-effective marketing solution for SME freight companies that are aiming to increase their sales. The low costs of setting up an e-shot,
When it comes to e-shots content is king. However, there is only one sure fire way you will be able to grab the attention of
prospective clients and that’s by using thought provoking, exciting and colourful imagery, suitable to the type of consumer you are targeting through your E-Shot campaign. This will create so much
revenue for you.
There are so many reasons why getting your e-shot campaigns looking professional is vital. You only get one chance to make a first impression with potential customers and it is still just as important with existing customers and colleagues. Direct-toconsumer or direct business-to-business campaigns require time and effort that many in the freight forwarding business simply cannot afford to dedicate.
2
A call to action Sitting down and brain storming exactly what you want to achieve from your e-shot campaign is vital if you want it to
thrive. Design a call to action and come up with research on your market competition, your marketing channel, concepts for all stakeholders to review, consider feedback, refine all your ideas and even develop digital ready artwork/assets. Follow these steps, monitor

4
Personalisation keeps customers coming back One of the key factors in making an e-shot campaign successful is making it feel individual. There is nothing worse
than receiving a mass email that appears to have no relevance to you. Those emails will be ignored or deleted. By using your existing contacts and personalising your emails with a name, or a picture engagement – today's email marketing allows you to do this.
Engaging content leads to business As with many different platforms on the Internet, getting your target audience to engage with your content will
lead to people clicking through to your website or app. Researching your consumer market and making sure you are using key words and imagery will have people 1) opening your e-shot and 2) pursuing further involvement with both you and your company.
6
Customer database Once you have your email set and ready to go the advantage of having a database of relevant clients at your disposal
opens up amazing avenues. Because you can segment your database of customers or users with email, you can send extremely targeted marketing campaigns that will result in increased sales conversions simply because they are relevant.
