THE EDITOR

M

ost of the economies around the world rely heavily on the trade generated from air- and seaports. Our February issue sees us looking at how big the impact of

our ports has on these economies. The current EU shipping industry employees 590,000 people within both land and sea based jobs, and the trade value of these ports comes to an estimated ÂŁ3 trillion between the EU and the rest of the world. These statistics alone warrant a closer inspection into the current state of the UK ports, and whether Brexit will affect these figures. Manchester has gone through something of a seaport renaissance in recent years. Road congestion and soaring fuel prices left firms looking for a cheaper, more reliable and greener alternative. This came in the form of shipping canals and has since developed into a promising new distribution method for the city. The original investment of ÂŁ500 million has been increased in the past several years to increase capacity. A testament to the UK's busy port service in Manchester, and one which has no plan to stop growing in years to come. With the success that

RETURNS TO HACTL E VA Air has appointed Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) as its handling agent, with effect from 5th January 2018.

Hactl will provide all cargo handling services for the airline’s

We were previously sending two articulated tractors units, each pulling a single-deck trailer, down to High Wycombe five nights a week. However, the increased carrying capacity of the lifting-deck trailer means we can now do the same job with a single truck. It’s a round trip of 285 miles, which means we’ll be covering 74,100 fewer road miles each year. This new trailer has therefore enabled us significantly to improve our environmental profile through the very substantial reductions we’re achieving in CO2 and other emissions. We have been very impressed not only with the quality and reliability of Gray & Adams’ equipment, but also with its customer-focused service. The manufacturer provided us initially with a lifting-deck trailer for trial, so we could make sure it was going to suit our operation. It has also delivered a programme of training for our operational personnel which was exceptionally well received.
