RETURNS TO HACTL E VA Air has appointed Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) as its handling agent, with effect from 5th January 2018.
Hactl will provide all cargo handling services for the airline’s
operations from Hong Kong, which include over 60 passenger and 8 wide-body freighter flights per week.
EVA Air also plans to use the SuperLink China Direct road feeder services provided by Hactl subsidiary Hacis, to extend its catchment to include the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. The Hacis network will shortly be extended with the opening of a ninth depot in the western PRD and, in conjunction with the opening of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, this will reduce trans-PRD transit times by two thirds. How did you overcome your biggest challenge? The biggest challenge is simple: clients won’t commit until they know it works. To be fair, neither would I! So the solution was to charge carriers to be listed either under the countries they ship to, or the services the offer. We offered our clients a month completely free of charge. The challenge, with any marketing, is getting clients to commit and allocate enough budget to allow us to get the product to work. The solution was keeping the pricing very simple and being able to produce tangible results. Ultimately, people don’t mind paying for something if they know it works. We can run our clients a report on every quote the site has generated at any time, providing tangible results that our client feels comfortable with and wish to continue investing in.

Once a month, the team vote for that current month’s MVP (Most Valuable Player), which is a really nice way of the team recognising who has gone the extra mile that month. The winner, I take out for lunch and give a half day. It’s a win-win for me!

year. The opportunity to speak candidly about the success of our company, my influence on that, and

he first three months of 2018 was a bit of a rocky start for the air freight market, however, April and May have seen the sector pick up with Asian airlines seeing cargo demand growth improve with it registering a 7.9% increase in demand to 979m cargo and mail revenue tonne km’s. WorldACD state that the cargo volumes increased by 4% in April, plus a 4.8% improvement during the
first quarter. With this rather positive pick-up, FORWARDER thought it was about time we looked at the good practices that make air freight market, one that many see as the way most glamourous version of freight forwarding. Whether it be aid relief or more luxurious, expensive items heading off to hard to reach areas is a trade that needs plenty of consideration. The numerous airlines and charges can become a confusing set up for anybody new to the air freight market, but if you follow some of our tips you’ll partaking in the surge the sector is currently going through and set to maintain through the rest of 2018.
KNOW YOUR REGULATIONS Understanding the regulations that govern your cargo’s inevitable trade route and the form of transport they are on is vital to the overall efficiency of your distribution. Regulatory compliance must be electronically integrated with logistics operations, failing which can lead to costly fines and slower performance. As different countries have different rules and methods of paper work related to goods as well as transportation modes and types such as export, import, customs declaration and in-transit, an in-depth understanding of local requirements is extremely necessary.
KNOW YOUR CARRIERS You wouldn’t buy a new, expensive car from a sketchy bloke in an alleyway, (or maybe you would, who am I to judge). So, using a carrier that you know nothing about, or a company with a less than favourable industry reputation, is a risky game to play. Research and finding the right company for you in the air freight game is crucial. Understanding how your cargo may be handled by different carriers and having a precise list of who you need to use for different countries, along with different cargo, is strongly advisable.

COSTS Possibly the most obvious of all on this list. Air freight is synonymous with being the expensive cousin of other forms of distribution. This means, along with your carrier research, you need to weigh up their overall costs and find the fastest, most cost-efficient way of flying your products to certain destinations. Unfortunately, there is no right answer with cost efficiency and air freight. If your cargo needs shipped from A to B by plane, you may find a fixed price. All you can do is shop around and find the best one.
BUILD RELATIONSHIPS Whilst driving the cost of cargo that needs shipped may prove to be difficult. The competitive nature of freight forwarding doesn’t end in the air, and having a robust network of industry practitioners could, eventually, lead to cheaper charges or efficiency in other formats. The industry is filled with people willing to help you out, well at least in my experience, so, a smile and some loyalty to could go a long way within the air freight market.
SECURITY Whilst efficiency is prominent when using air freight, understanding your carrier’s security capabilities is also prominent. The threat of terrorist activities always makes air freight a secure distribution method. However, this doesn’t mean that they are water-tight and may well not be the best pick if you are exporting precious cargo. The reality is that you should check out every possibility when it comes to air freight. Leaving it to chance could prove to be rather costly.

ver a long period of time, there has been a great debate regarding if UK airports will be able to continue absorbing the growing volume of cargo passing through them. Whilst some industries might look on and say that it is a first world problem – to complain about ‘too many products’ at your disposal – this is an increasingly worrying issue for freight
forwarders around the world. The surge in traffic during the peak seasons has been overwhelming airports for years, including some of the large gateways, exposing inadequate cargo capacity. Major of London, Sadiq Khan, has commented in the past that there is a “need for increased flight capacity in this part of the country and that is why he is in favour of a new runway at Gatwick, which would bring about the increase in capacity we need as well as new jobs and growth”. A bit of a tangent from the latest Heathrow rhetoric, but nonetheless relevant that capacity issues are plaguing our airports. The big question is, what can be done to improve this? Aside from the obvious expansions of airports, there are several other options to help us overcome the current capacity conundrum, and to help streamline the flow of cargo through UK airports.
TAXATION
I know, I know. Nobody wants to hear about how taxation can benefit us. But if we don’t want an environmental headache that comes with expansions of runways, it could be a (fairly) painless way of helping curb capacity issues. Whilst bigger airports won’t agree with this, removing the model of Air Passenger Duty from smaller airports will encourage airlines to base more flights at airports of a smaller size. This could result in freeing up enough money for carriers to see benefits in using the smaller airports, rather than constantly overloading Heathrow with cargo.

The Internet of Things is something that I have spoken about in many articles before, and essentially the idea behind it is to digitally connect inanimate objects for them to send useful information. How would this solved capacity issues? With better rail and road connections to smaller airports across the country, passengers could more easily choose alternatives to Heathrow and Gatwick. This may seem like wishful thinking; however, many freight experts have predicted that the IoT will eventually become an integral part of forwarding, cutting back on human error whilst providing an incredible amount of efficiency to practitioners.
THE BALANCING ACT
You might have read headlines that follow something like “airports stretched to 98% capacity”. And whilst it may seem appealing to jump on the bandwagon and start screaming for expansions, stop and ask yourself: are we making the most out of what we have? If two or more runways are available and can be used independently of each other, then the key to maximising capacity is to ensure each can be fully utilised always. Flexing the mode of operations and allowing take off and landings from each runway, or even implementing HIRO – a bit niched a stretch to be used at some of the UK’s busiest airports, I know – are just some of the ways that we can utilise the space that we have already got, and start to help deal with the capacity issues that plagues the industry.
