So now that the Mr Raab has finally realised just how significant the impact on the UK manufacturing and haulage industries are, surely there are some proposed resolutions? Not quite. Unless we decide to take LeaveEU co-founder Richard Tice’s advice of just using other ports. Let’s all hope it’s ‘just’ that simple. So, what does this mean for logistics? Well, the knock-on effect could be that some of the interstate and long-distance hauliers suffer if this is a trend which continues. Smaller companies are likely to be the ones whose position weakens the most as they struggle to secure longhaul cargo. However, it could also mean the opportunity for some larger hauliers to revisit their business strategy. Recently, Californian trucking companies have seen themselves hit with huge fines by the Environmental Protection Agency for flouting State Law on emissions. Whilst reducing carbon pollution remains at the forefront of people’s minds, perhaps it’s time for companies to revisit their own emissions reduction strategy. Whilst companies with an ‘old-school’ approach to logistics may dig their heels in when it comes to change, the forwardthinking companies will understand that this kind of legislation is not going away. As with anything, the smart will adapt, cementing resolutions as selling points for their business. Sarah O'Connell, Senior Editor, FORWARDER magazine

FOREIGN DRIVERS CANNOT ESCAPE PAYING THE DART CHARGE 21 AUGUST 2017

SAYS RHA

T

he news that over a million non-UK drivers have avoided paying the Dart Charge when travelling over the Dartford Crossing comes as little surprise to the Road Haulage Association.

Speaking to BBC Kent, RHA policy director Duncan Buchanan said: This issue was identified from the moment the Freeflow system

was introduced, and it is still a problem. Foreign drivers should pay: it’s as simple as that. It is very concerning that there are still hauliers making the crossing for free. Fines totalling more than £81 million have been passed on to a European debt recovery agency since the Dart Charge began in 2014. Highways England have stated that foreign drivers not paying their charge make up less than 1% of total crossings, but the fact of the matter is that the dodged fines can make up an enormous loss. We need enforcement to ensure that the appropriate Dart Charge is collected from all crossing users and the RHA considers it to be totally unfair that there are still many who are making the crossing free of charge. It is a great concern that we just don’t know just how many crossing users are dodging the charge

On average, the Teletruk loads or unloads each delivery in around 30 minutes, meaning the massive disruption that impacted upon the company’s working day dictated by the need for staff to move their cars each time a trailer arrived at or left the site, has been eliminated. And at all sites, loading and unloading a trailer from just one side delivers significant safety and throughput efficiency benefits. Teletruks make the working environment safer, for example, because less vehicle movements are required to carry out trailer processing tasks and, as outdoor goods yards can be reconfigured to allow trailers to park against a boundary wall, ‘blind’ forklift travel – where a lift truck operator emerges from the side of a parked trailer into what is often a busy area – is eliminated. I was delighted to appear in the FORWARDER magazine ‘Move it Like’ showcase earlier this

year. The opportunity to speak candidly about the success of our company, my influence on that, and

the ingredients that contribute to our continued success was appreciated. NNR is a global ‘premium brand’ that, although established for over a 100 years in Asia, is not particularly well known in the UK. The feature in Forwarder Magazine offered the stage for us to future promote our business. The moniker ‘secret assassin’ and ‘largest company you’ve never heard of’ no longer suits the brand and size of our global group, therefore features like ‘Move it Like’ in a classy glossy such as FORWARDER are the perfect vehicle to help change that perception. Now I’ve recovered from the marginal discomfort

of a little more attention than normal (!), I can reflect that it provided a strong and personal message that many of our key partners and customers read and responded favourably too. Lee Griffiths, NNR

Britain can keep trading after Brexit. Under the government’s assessment of employability, these professions are deemed to be ‘low skilled’ and so workers are unlikely to be given access to UK work post-Brexit in the event of No Deal withdrawal. FTA continues to campaign for a change of policy to ensure workers of all abilities – not just those deemed to be highly skilled – are considered for visas so the UK does not come grinding to a halt. But staff shortages are just the beginning. Following advice provided by the government, many organisations and businesses, including the NHS, have begun stockpiling items in expectation of delivery delays after a No Deal Brexit. If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, the UK may only have access to a maximum of 1,224 permits per year to allow British lorries to travel to and from the Continent. Furthermore, these vehicles would be subject to a plethora of new regulations and checks when crossing the border; lorries are currently waved onto and off cross-Channel transport but experts estimate that a two-minute delay at Dover Port could lead to 17-

A large contributor to the region’s increased popularity is the country’s attitude to innovation. Slovenia is home to the world’s first ‘Bitcoin City’, and has an agency called SPIRIT Slovenia which supports and realises the country’s innovation goals. Along with promoting entrepreneurship, there is evidence elsewhere of technology adoption within the logistics sector: for example, the International Federation of Robotics have said there has been a particular rise in the number of robots adopted in Slovenia when compared to the global average. Global robotics turnover was $48 billion (USD) in 2017, with an average of 144 robots per 10,000 workers in Slovenia – but compare this with the European average of 106 robots, and the US’ of just 91 per 10,000 workers, and the jump is vast. Slovenia is a traditionally export-driven economy, with a culture rich in respect for protocol, hierarchy, formality, and is one of the highest-ranking countries for gender pay equality. Sarah O'Connell, Senior Editor, FORWARDER magazine

FACT FILE •• It is projected that the revenue of freight transport by road in Slovenia will amount to approximately 2,967 million U.S. dollars by 2022. •• Slovenia has shown significant increases in inland freight transport relative to GDP, with their indices 6% higher in 2016 than 10 years earlier (second only to Denmark). •• The share of international road freight transport in total road freight is particularly high in Slovenia, at 88.6%.

EARLY 1900S

Bringing it back to basics, the resources within warehousing started off minimal. After World War I, the invention of hand trucks made it easier for warehouse workers to to move and manage inventory. Workers were required to hand-pick stock and record the activity on paper documents, however this could lead to health dangers and made it hard to track and count stock.

EARLY 1970s

World War II developed warehousing management further. Forklifts and pallets enabled quicker and easier inventory movement. Hardcopy documents were piling up, demanding a warehouse of their own. As warehouses introduced computers into the management process,
