know the full breakdown of the situation. In this issue, we talk a lot about going green: the methods, the challenges, the costs and the benefits. Volatile fuel prices have been part of the final push when it comes for some companies’ decision to electrify their fleets or move to alternative methods of power. FedEx have this month introduced another 1,000 electric vehicles to its fleet in California. Other carriers are making similar moves according to Wall Street Journal reports, with DHL Express and United Parcel Service making their own movements towards electrification. Of course, electric isn’t the only answer. Shell have opened a new hydrogen power station in Palo Alto, making this their second station of the type. Experts, however, aren’t convinced that this is a scalable solution: hydrogen is incredibly volatile and difficult to transport. It hasn’t put everyone off, however. Nikola Motor Company – mostly viewed as Tesla’s largest competitor – have showcased their own autonomous hydrogen-powered lorries, which they’re hoping to roll out by 2023. There has at least been a breakthrough when it comes to the production of hydrogen fuel, making this process cheaper and more efficient, after a collaboration between the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Ben-Gurion University of Negev. The subject of cleaner power is an ever-topical issue, and that’s why we have decided to tailor our regional focus specifically to the green activity happening in London, ahead of launching our Countdown to ECO 2020 which will be introduced to the magazine in January

ACME PRODUCTION SERVICES CELEBRATE 25 YRS 24 SEPTEMBER 2018

AS MORE KRONE DRY LINERS JOIN FLEET

A

CME Production Services, the event and entertainment

transport specialists have added a further two Krone Dry Liner box trailers to their fleet which, says the company,

will provide maximum load protection and secure carriage for their UK and European customers. Now in their 25th year, working mainly for production, sound and lighting companies, ACME require secure loading to safeguard against potential theft and damage during transit. Director Lance Lovell explains: For 25 years we’ve been providing specialised transport and storage services to the event and entertainment industries; trucking everything from a single flight case, all the way up to a complete music tour production. Our trailers therefore, need to be built to the highest standard to ensure safe and secure transport. These Dry Liners from Krone are virtually impregnable and are internally equipped to suit our specific loading needs. To achieve the specification best suited to ACME, Krone’s sales team proposed a bespoke combination of design features including steel ‘container-type’ barn doors with flush fit and integrated double locking which is easily operated from underneath the doors. Drum brakes were also specified.

The body is constructed from galvanised steel cassette panels, including the front bulkhead, which has horizontal internal reinforcement and a 250mm fork lift protection strip. A modified keyhole garment system accepts universal loading beams - ideal for mixed loads - while the internal walls are reinforced with a 350mm kick-strip strip. Also, an impressive internal load height of 2.915m is achieved within the 4m limit. We’ve been with Krone since 2014 and I can truly say it’s been 100% positive. The team understand our industry, talk our language and provide a professional service. ACME also provides a parcel delivery service along with a diverse range of specialist storage facilities, including large agricultural buildings, secure sea containers - 10ft to 40 ft - and local crews for loading and unloading services. Driver CPC Training (Certificate of Professional Competence) is an additional service provided by ACME and anyone wishing for further information should contact Lance Lovell on +44 1767 640777 or email acmeprod@btconnect.com.

The whole bridge was closed to traffic, and people were walking down the road of the bridge freely. Protesters were stood with signs that read FOSSIL FUEL FREE FUTURE and STOP CLIMATE BREAKDOWN. After the event, I saw Instagram posts from YouTube and social media influencers, Jack and Finn Harries (@ JackHarries & @FinnHarries) who attended the event. They seemed passionate and positive with the outcome of the protest. The march was in aid of climate change, and the purpose of the protest was in hope of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. TEESPORT GROWTH 21 NOVEMBER 2018

published its annual maritime statistics confirming Teesport, one of the deepest water ports on the east coast of England, experienced an overall volume increase higher than any other UK port in 2017. A significant driver in this reported growth is the increasing number of containers and trailers shipped from the continent to Teesport with 54,400 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit) handled in October, the highest on record, following an exceptional fiveweek period in September. production facility. The introduction of Teletruk technology has allowed Camden to improve site safety and make better use of the outside yard space available at its production site. Loading cages and A-frames containing windows and doors on to a typical trailer with counterbalanced forklift trucks had meant that Camden required considerable outside space to allow the lift trucks to manoeuvre safely around both sides of the vehicle. However, thanks to the Teletruk’s unique telescopic reach, Camden is now able to access curtainsided trailers from only one side – which means less outdoor space is required and, because lift trucks no longer need to travel around the blind side of the lorry, on site safety is enhanced. How would you define your business culture at Easyfairs? Easyfairs is an ethical business, and a happy one. Our values define how we behave on the journey into the future and they shape our products. We’ve selected four values that we apply in our day-today work: integrity, creative entrepreneurship, being results driven and, last but not least, having fun.

Q A

How do you get the best out of your team? The AntwerpXL team is very similar to the rest of Easyfairs; we are innovative; always looking for new & better ways to bring people together. We love spending time with our clients & ultimately delivering return on investment for our exhibitors & creating unique experiences for all attendees to our events – this is what drives us!

Q Q A

Where do you see AntwerpXL in 2020?

A

Overall, what has the experience of organising the event been like? Fantastic! We are launch specialists & we love being able to bring a new show to market! As soon as opportunities arise, we jump on them as we are setup in such a way that enables us to react quickly. We then fall back on our years of experience in

MOVE IT LIKE...YOU

I was delighted to appear in the FORWARDER magazine ‘Move it Like’ showcase earlier this

year. The opportunity to speak candidly about the success of our company, my influence on that, and

the ingredients that contribute to our continued success was appreciated. NNR is a global ‘premium brand’ that, although established for over a 100 years in Asia, is not particularly well known in the UK. The feature in Forwarder Magazine offered the stage for us to future promote our business. The moniker ‘secret assassin’ and ‘largest company you’ve never heard of’ no longer suits the brand and size of our global group, therefore features like ‘Move it Like’ in a classy glossy such as FORWARDER are the perfect vehicle to help change that perception. Now I’ve recovered from the marginal discomfort

of a little more attention than normal (!), I can reflect that it provided a strong and personal message that many of our key partners and customers read and responded favourably too. Lee Griffiths, NNR

overnment plans to ban petrol and diesel car sales by

2032, and for cars to be 'effectively zero emission' by 2040

means the clock is ticking. What’s plan b? Biofuels seem to offer

promising results, but is this energy replacement substantial enough

to power vehicles with heavy loads? FORWARDER take a look at the potential options, assessing which seem to be the best to burn.

GASOHOL

Alcohol (ethanol) is made from

plant sugars using yeast to

create a biofuel, which can be mixed with petrol to create gasohol is an alternative fuel. Whilst this type of biofuel is not as clean as fully plant-based biofuels, countries like Brazil use gasohol due to their mass amounts of sugar cane to be able to produce a substantial amount of fuel.

BACK TO SQUARE ONE?

Not exactly. Research into providing low or zero or low emission fuels has come a long way, and it’s not just everyday vehicles that are using biofuels and economically-powered resources. Freight forwarders are becoming a part of the low/zero emission scheme, including battery operated vehicles. Vehicles that run off of biofuels or electric power may be initially expensive, however the running costs are much more economical, proving to be a long-term investment. The innovation of e c o friendlier vehicles seems to be accelerating forward, along with the Mayor of London’s plans for a greener world.

FOSSIL FUELS

Whilst the majority of the vehicles we drive are powered by fossil

fuels – petrol or diesel – we hope that

we can come up with an eco-friendlier alternative. We don’t tend to think about what we’re pumping into our vehicles when we’re stood at the petrol station, but perhaps it’s about time we started. Fossil fuels are made from decomposed plants and animals that have been buried in the ground for millions of years. The problems we are now facing are obvious: the resources to make fossil fuels are non-renewable, and they’re finite. This means that any fossil fuel used or burned cannot be replaced, and we

will

one day run out of fossil fuels to dig up.

BIOFUELS

Proving to be a sustainable alternative, biofuels may be the future fossil fuel. What exactly are biofuels? Produced through contemporary biological processes (as opposed to geological processes e.g. fossil fuels), this means the renewable energy is taken from plants or microalgae through the process of photosynthesis. In theory, biofuels are carbon-neutral, which means that the CO2 absorbed by plants is the same amount of CO2 that is released when the fuel is burned. Whilst this carbon-neutral factor is dependent on the land quality when growing the biofuel, this could be the answer to not only making fuel that is renewable, but greener in

BIOGAS

terms of a carbon footprint.

Biogas is produced when dead plants or animals decay, and the natural bacteria (such as the digestive system in animals) release an organic gas. It releases less particulates when burned, but requires more volume, as the

Rachel Jefferies, Editor, FORWARDER magazine

energy levels are lower than fossil fuels. Are biogases the future for powering vehicles? It can be a tricky question to answer. Biogas can become a little complicated, as should the temperature be too low, the production will be too slow, and too high, the production may stop all together if the bacteria is killed. Furthermore, handling biogas carefully

is vital, and it can become explosive if the

She explained that her son loved the Tuffnells trucks and dreamed of driving one himself. When the team realised the impact that the kind gesture had on the young boy, they set about arranging the special day, all geared towards making his dream come true. During the day, in addition to getting a taste of life as a Tuffnells driver, Joshua was presented with his very own uniform and a Tuffnells’ lorry was named in his honour. We’re so pleased we were able to arrange such a wonderful day for one of Tuffnells’ extra-special fans. In total, seven members of staff gave up their Saturday morning to make this a memorable experience for Joshua. His expression when he saw that the truck was named after him was priceless, and it was so lovely to be able to play a part in making his dreams come true.
