hen it comes to warehousing, there have been particular difficulties throughout the final quarter of 2018. The explosive growth of e-commerce and the competition among retailers to deliver goods quickly is triggering a land grab for distribution space in urbanized areas, resulting in the scarcity of warehousing near population centres. Experts say this is a trend which appears to be reflected among much of the western world, with companies becoming increasingly ‘creative’ when it comes to meeting storage space requirements: there are reports of firms using vacant parking garages and even tents to manage package handling in some North American states.
Brexit has seen UK companies stocking up on goods ahead of a no-deal Brexit outcome, meaning that warehousing space is increasingly limited. ‘Priority’ goods such as medicines, dry ingredients and manufacturing parts are being stockpiled in locations around the UK. Compounding the issue further are the rumours that Amazon are buying up large quantities of storage space ahead of the March Brexit deadline, which appears to be causing some antagonism according to reports. The most problematic issue is the lack of temperature-controlled storage space available, and there’s an acceleration in the buy-up of space in this sector. It’s not just pharma and food companies that are worried.

Industry spokespeople, representative bodies and the government alike are calling for businesses to have a strategy in place, and to be prepared, but the clock is already ticking dangerously close to midnight.
All of this could mean a revival for the bonded warehousing industry, which has traditionally fallen out of favour for more ‘fluid’ methods of storage and stock management. Additionally, some smaller digital freight fulfilment companies should be looking to capitalise on the shake-up – providing their systems are data heavy, with adequate technical support. What are bonded warehouses? bonded warehouse is a secured space which imported goods or merchandise is stored, repacked or sorted whilst it awaits customs clearance.
Goods and cargo can be stored in a bonded warehouse for up to 5 years from the date of importation without payment, providing the rules and regulations have been followed. Bonded warehouses are popular, as goods can be stored in the UK without actually being registered in the UK market, which, ultimately, improves cash flow. This is ideal for products such as wine and tobacco, or products awaiting launch. Bonded warehouses are available around all developed countries of the world, and there generally is an option to store different types of goods, such as dry cargo, deepfreeze systems, bulk storage and abnormal loads, meaning that almost any form of business can benefit from using a bonded warehouse. The ‘Fiscal Warehousing’ system applies to those who desire to store specified merchandises, which include tin, copper, zinc, cereals, coffee, silver and tea. These goods must be notified when stored in the warehouse and exchanged by businesses that do not require VAT registration. Fiscal warehousing in the UK requires conditions to be met, and traders must apply to HMRC for consent. Secured with 24-hour CCTV, barcodes and monitoring systems for goods (including refrigerated items), bonded warehouses are a safe environment to store goods, and is supervised by the administrator regularly.

onded warehouses have always been a vital part of the freight and trade industry, and showed particularly useful attributes to storing goods during the 17th-18th century.
Trade and retailing boomed as domestic workers produced more products and discovered more materials. In 1686 alone, £1 million worth of goods were imported to London. Increased imports meant more storage required, and with the increase of alcohol and tobacco post-World War II, bonded warehouses could provide the benefit of storage without tax. Some of these very warehouses are just down the road without us even realising, so I thought I’d give a little shoutout to some of the spaces that were once pertinent to the trading industry.
STOURBRIDGE
Located near the centre of Stourbridge, this bonded warehouse was built in 1779 and was a two-storey brick edifice. This bonded warehouse held taxable goods, such as tea, spirits and tobacco until the importer paid the duty required. The warehouse was highly secure, fitted with barred windows and doors. Eventually, this warehouse was renovated by Stourbridge Navigation Trust, and the building is now houses and offices.
BRISTOL
Between 1905 and 1919, A, B and C* Bond warehouses were constructed on Bristol’s Floating Harbour. These warehouses were famously red-brick built, and were used for the storage of tobacco, which was a thriving product at the time. The tobacco was kept in bonded warehouses until duties had been paid. In present day, these bonded warehouse buildings are now listed buildings. One is used as a Life Skills learning centre for children.
SCOTLAND
A and B bonded warehouses were built in 1892 in Markinch (Fife), and were shortly taken over by whiskey distillery company, Haig & Company in 1894. The warehouse was used in 1938 to store 1.5 million gallons of whiskey, along with bottling facilities for over 1.25 million cases per year. As the business grew, exports of the product were taken over to the United States. The premises eventually closed in 1984.
NEWCASTLE
Seeming to be a bonded warehouse hub, Newcastle provides more than one bonded warehouse, and two of them have been converted into contemporary restaurants. One of the two is based in Sunderland, and was constructed in 1830. Limited information remains about the bonded warehouses, however being situated right on the River Tyne and not far from the coast, it is likely that goods such as tea and tobacco may have been stored here.
YORK
Used as a bonded warehouse in the 1875, this historic building was closed due to its severe floods in November 2000. York’s bonded warehouse was used for trade and storage, however it is reported that there was a rapid decline in commercial traffic and trade along the River Ouse after World War II. Since its foundation in 1977, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has fostered orphaned baby elephants that have lost their herds and mothers as a result of poachers and forceful separation. After three years of rehabilitation at the orphanage, the keepers at the Trust work to reintegrate the elephants into the wild. In the wild elephants keep warm by staying in their herds but, when an elephant is orphaned, they are unable to sustain adequate body temperature on their own.
