impatience is rising over seemingly ‘basic’ operational questions remaining unanswered. Businesses have been warned to have plans in place in case of an undesirable outcome for months, but with multiple possible scenarios a possibility, it’s just not realistic for smaller businesses to prepare for every eventual conclusion. At the time of writing, it has been reported that Mrs May has refused to rule-out a no-deal Brexit scenario, despite the fact that avoiding this outcome seems to be the only thing a majority can agree on. A no-deal outcome would threaten customs checks, traffic tailbacks, and high import tariffs on a number of goods, as the customs market defaults to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) guidelines. Additionally, there are currently no publicised plans to prepare additional customs staff, for example – see this issue’s FORWARDER Focus on North Wales for my further breakdown and analysis of customs complications.

Elsewhere in the world, the US government shut down is beginning to affect the supply chain on a global scale. Whilst there are not currently any direct serious delays being reported, this could soon change as exporters from North America struggle to obtain required licenses for shipping certain goods, and customs and border agents work without pay. Shippers also remain concerned as the backlog of problems and delays increases, with a staggering effect on the supply chain. Cross-border shipments are particularly affected because of border staff shortages, and compounding these issues is the introduction of new tariffs and screening procedures. But some good news for state-side industry has been that the price of diesel is continuing to fall, now at its 13th consecutive week of doing so. The price of diesel is now below $3 for the first time since Q1 2018, meaning those miles which are being travelled are cheaper. Now it’s just time to get things moving again, so larger corporations can take advantage of the cheaper miles‌ Sarah O'Connell, Senior Editor, FORWARDER magazine

erzlake, January 2019 - Due to the very positive market demand for interchangeable systems and Dry Liners, Krone will significantly increase production capacity at
its Herzlake site. As Managing Director Bernhard BrĂźggen explains, production output will be doubled to over 25,000 units in the next one and a half years.
We have already laid the foundation for this
production offensive with the introduction of automatic component production in Herzlake. Our swap body systems and Dry Liners stand for high product quality combined with numerous innovative load securing solutions and are therefore in high demand on the market, as evidenced, for example, by our market share of around 70 % for swap bodies. In addition, there is a significant increase in demand, which is also generated by the booming online trade. In addition to the massive increase in production, this is also associated with an investment offensive. As part of the extensive automation implementation and the associated robot production systems, the entire product range is being revised. This is particularly important in order not only to further increase quality, but also to further increase customer benefits.

Customers who operate warehouses feel they need to bolster
their material handling fleets with extra vehicles to cope with the additional goods they are storing on behalf of companies that are stockpiling products to ensure their business is not affected by possible future customs or port delays. With companies seeking to minimise the risk of supply chain disruption in March by holding increased inventory, warehouse operators across the UK are under intense pressure to increase storage capacity and maintain handling efficiency at their facilities. But, with anecdotal evidence suggesting that businesses are seeking to hire additional storage space for periods of between just 6 and 12 months – in theory enough time to ensure their supply chains do not suffer as Britain leaves the EU – short-term rental Flexi trucks are the obvious choice for third party logistics (3PL) companies. We are receiving significant enquiries for short term rental products from 3PLs whose needs are being driven by their clients’ contingency planning every day. MOVE IT LIKE...YOU
I was delighted to appear in the FORWARDER magazine ‘Move it Like’ showcase earlier this
year. The opportunity to speak candidly about the success of our company, my influence on that, and
the ingredients that contribute to our continued success was appreciated. NNR is a global ‘premium brand’ that, although established for over a 100 years in Asia, is not particularly well known in the UK. The feature in Forwarder Magazine offered the stage for us to future promote our business. The moniker ‘secret assassin’ and ‘largest company you’ve never heard of’ no longer suits the brand and size of our global group, therefore features like ‘Move it Like’ in a classy glossy such as FORWARDER are the perfect vehicle to help change that perception. Now I’ve recovered from the marginal discomfort
of a little more attention than normal (!), I can reflect that it provided a strong and personal message that many of our key partners and customers read and responded favourably too. Lee Griffiths, NNR

highlight how Ligentia continues to meet our customers' requirements through customised solutions. I found the process rewarding and my relationship with FORWARDER has continued to develop as my career has progressed to a global role. I would highly recommend
