oll up, roll up! Gather round and witness the latest and greatest in freight forwarding technology! It’s doubtful that this is the exact call Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen used when seeking investment for his ‘forwarder of the future’ from SoftBank’s Vision Fund, but whatever he has said, it’s certainly resulted in an incredible spectacle.
I’m sure that almost every one of our readers will have seen the news this month of Flexport’s latest round of funding: a modest $1 billion USD, in fact. But for those who haven’t, the startup acts as a digital shipping broker, allowing unrivalled tracking and comparison for businesses across the globe. After the latest round of capital, Flexport is valued at $3.2 billion USD making them the world’s 11th largest freight forwarder – not to be sniffed at, considering the company is just six years old. The company already boasts an impressive portfolio of 10,000 clients, with the aim of annihilating inefficiencies in the logistics industry. Flexport’s main angle is supporting direct-to-consumer

The time is right for platforms like this to gain more traction. There have been calls to move towards digitalisation for years, and it feels as though there is finally significant progress being made. Flexport is far from the only digital platform to see rapid growth, with Uber Freight’s hiring reportedly up 165% since their new head, Lior Ron, took over. It’s been rumoured that the Uber spin-off company is aiming to expand internationally from their current U.S operations region.

There are still conflicting predictions as to what a No-Deal Brexit would mean, ranging from huge gridlocks on UK roads to increased fluidity in trade between the UK and the world. And when all of the ‘experts’ have opposing opinions on the matter, it’s hard to know who to trust. If we take things off-road, there is some much-needed good news where our nation’s ports are concerned. There has been some planned simplification of customs declarations, and HMRC is waiving safety and security declarations for British imports to try and ease a potential pile-up. The award was received by GAC Krishnapatnam's Assistant Manager, Shipping Services, Nagaraja Sekhar, who says the company has benefitted from a rise in transshipment activities at the port: The demand for agency services has increased as a result of the growth in transshipment volumes and the demand for coal. We act as port agents for an increasing number of coastal vessels carrying thermal coal to Krishnapatnam. GAC made its first foray into the Indian Subcontinent in 1983. Today, GAC India is a leading provider of shipping and logistics services throughout the country with 26 offices along the eastern and western coastlines.

MOVE IT LIKE...YOU
I was delighted to appear in the FORWARDER magazine ‘Move it Like’ showcase earlier this
year. The opportunity to speak candidly about the success of our company, my influence on that, and
the ingredients that contribute to our continued success was appreciated. NNR is a global ‘premium brand’ that, although established for over a 100 years in Asia, is not particularly well known in the UK. The feature in Forwarder Magazine offered the stage for us to future promote our business. The moniker ‘secret assassin’ and ‘largest company you’ve never heard of’ no longer suits the brand and size of our global group, therefore features like ‘Move it Like’ in a classy glossy such as FORWARDER are the perfect vehicle to help change that perception. Now I’ve recovered from the marginal discomfort
of a little more attention than normal (!), I can reflect that it provided a strong and personal message that many of our key partners and customers read and responded favourably too. Lee Griffiths, NNR

ast fashion. You’ll undoubtedly have heard all about it in the news or on TV. Maybe you’ve been made aware of the scale of it simply through the constant bombardment of fashion
advertising on our newsfeeds, billboards, ad reels and the like. The term ‘fast fashion’ refers to the rapid-cycle consumption of clothing with trends changing all the time, meaning cheaply manufactured clothing, sold at rock-bottom prices and in vast quantities. Ultimately, there’s a strong link between personal expression and fashion, and it’s unlikely that our ever image-conscious western culture is going to shift away from this behaviour any time soon. What cannot be ignored, however, is that fashion is one of the most polluting, wasteful industries on the planet. So how do we redress the balance? What is the real issue? Fashion is a USD $2.4 trillion industry according to a report by Mckinsey in 2018. In the UK, less than 1% of all clothing is recycled. Instead, more than a million tonnes of textiles are thrown away every year. That’s a lot of clothes. It’s incredibly damaging to the environment: 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide are produced annually by the industry, and an impossible-to-imagine 79 billion cubic metres of water is used every year – that’s 2% of the entire planet’s fresh water and 10% of every global industry’s total water usage combined. This number is set to double by 2030.

The drop is caused when the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system is used to heat the interior of the vehicle, which ultimately consumes significant energy that could be used on the car’s mileage. driving range of any EV is determined by two factors, the capacity of its fully-charged battery pack and the efficiency of its electric powertrain. With most EVs, one kWh of electrical energy from the battery pack will provide between two to four miles of driving range. Furthermore, Tesla notes that AAA’s tests were based on a complete discharge of the battery from full to empty, which does not fully represent real-world or everyday usage of a vehicle. Telsa voices that distances of 50 miles or more are categorised as 'long trips' in everyday use of the vehicle. Recent claims that EV batteries’ range shrink in the cold, Telsa say is a misreport. This statement around EV batteries suggests that the range loss Tesla vehicles experience in extremely cold temperatures is due to the impact of the temperature on the battery. Tesla disputes this claim, explaining that the primary reason for shorter range is the impact of the cold on overall energy usage (i.e. MPG and MPGe). This affects gas-powered cars in addition to EVs. Tesla spoke with high confidence in their vehicles, stating that
NEW AAA STUDY CLAIMS
ELECTRIC VEHICLES LOSE SIGNIFICANT ENERGY IN COLDER CONDITIONS
their electric vehicles are designed to be both inherently more efficient and minimal in terms of energy wastage in comparison to traditional cars, meaning that the vehicle is built to handle features that consume energy (such as HVAC systems). Despite AAA’s findings, Tesla explained that various impacting factors of colder or below-freezing temperatures may have an effect on both internal-combustion vehicles and across electric vehicles in general. For example, in cold conditions, the rubber in tyre compounds dissipates more energy, subsequently increasing aerodynamic drag due to the higher density of cold air, meaning more energy is used. Additionally, oil in a car’s gearbox becomes thicker in colder temperatures, which affects the vehicle’s performance. Whilst these factors are relevant to IC vehicles, gasoline engines in fact dispose around 75% of the energy in their fuel during everyday driving, altering the significance of energy waste. According to Tesla, electric motors typically throw away less than 15% of the battery’s energy during everyday driving. Rachel Jefferies, Editor, FORWARDER magazine
