Does incurring lower in-store running costs equate to a safe business? Perhaps it’s not as black and white as that. Yet it’s worth considering the factors. A key benefit of the selected design solution was the set-up of wide aisles that would enable a quick move in and also require no change to their existing forklift truck fleet. One particularly memorable project that I managed was to transport the component parts from China and Malaysia for a new factory build in Ukraine. To ensure the success of the project involved months of very detailed planning and included a pre-shipment site visit to Ukraine to ensure it was possible to deliver the larger pieces to their required positions on the site. It was necessary to charter two heavy-lift-geared vessels to accommodate all the large pieces. The largest item measured 13.5 metres in diameter and 8 metres in height and weighed 126 tonnes. Special care had to be taken to ensure that the stresses of transporting the piece from the factory site in Malaysia onto a barge, lifting the piece off the barge at Port Kelang onto the vessel and the long sea voyage to Ukraine did not distort the outer casing, as this could cause irreparable damage to the balanced mechanism inside the casing.

I joined Cory Logistics Projects department based in Felixstowe in 2007 (after they acquired Fred Olsen Forwarding). What does Projects do? We create solutions for our customers. My responsibilities include developing new and existing customers, procurement, project planning and execution, documentation, customs clearance, arranging barge, coaster and geared vessel charters. To ensure the piece was transported safely, we provided the services of a naval architect from our parent company Braemar PLC to design a special steel transport frame to support the cargo whilst in transit, together with a lashing plan to secure the cargo safely below deck on the vessel. I am pleased to say that all cargo was delivered successfully and on time. There has been a down turn in projects over the last couple of years, but I am pleased to say that this year we have seen an increase in project enquiries. Part of our success in securing new business this year can be attributed to having the right, like-minded overseas partners. For me there are no two days the same; my day to day role is constantly changing to ensure our customer’s requirements are met and this gives me great satisfaction. The special service that I provide is simply to provide a bespoke service to ensure that our customs cargo is moved in the safest, most cost-effective way and within the time frame required. In Projects, I have found that the key to success is taking the initial time to fully understand the customer’s requirements, plan a course of action and, above all, keep the customer informed.
