are struggling to make ends meet due to the popularity of online purchases. Fashion retailers such as ASOS, Pretty Little Thing and Amazon are just a few of the most popular places for customers to shop. Yet what do they have in common? There are no physical shops for customers to visit, and these retailers haven’t known any different. If marketed right and delivery expectations are met, online-only stores can benefit not only customers but the retailer themselves immensely. Does incurring lower in-store running costs equate to a safe business? Perhaps it’s not as black and white as that. Yet it’s worth considering the factors. Without the need to to rent or maintain physical shops, deliveries, POS (point of sale) or inshop marketing resources, retail staff and more, online shops are able to prioritise elements of its produce, such as the supply chain, warehousing and delivery proceedings. Department store House of Fraser is just another retail brand that has announced store closures earlier this year. Although there has been a threat to close further stores, the Chief Executive of SportsDirect.com (which bought House of Fraser back in August when it went into administration), Mike Ashley, has spoken out about the government’s lack of investigation into retail issues. According to the Retail Gazette and The Guardian, Ashley has voiced that the government isn't 'interested' in the Debenhams collapse, and that politicians only seem to only be concerned with their own PR. He further believes that the government is ignoring 'cases which are just as bad, if not worse' than Debenhams, and that there has been a significant absence in researching into corporate misconduct. Where do you think high-street shops will be in five-to-ten years’ time – is there a future? Is the government doing enough to ensure retailers are supported when needed, and how will Brexit impact on retail in years to come? BEDFORD BUS DEPOT TRANSFORMED INTO FULLY OPERATIONAL WAREHOUSE 1 NOVEMBER 201 019 9
FOR WELCH’S TRANSPORT LTD
A
former Bedford bus depot has recently been given a new purpose by Hertfordshire based warehouse solution company, SEC Storage, who transformed the space into
a fully functional warehouse for one of the UK’s leading haulage companies, Welch’s Transport Ltd. Following the acquisition of a 46,000 sq/ft bus depot based on the Cambridge Road Industrial Estate in Bedford, Welch's Transport Ltd called upon SEC Storage to design and install an adjustable pallet racking system with varying bay sizes and warehouse barriers, providing the haulage company with a practical storage solution. A key benefit of the selected design solution was the set-up of wide aisles that would enable a quick move in and also require no change to their existing forklift truck fleet. SEC designed the solution so that as capacity requirements increase, it will be a simple task to infill with more racking, implementing a change to an articulated forklift configuration, removing the need for any disruptive warehouse reconfiguration in the future.

MEET THE TEAM ...A CHAT WITH THE PROJECTS TEAM AT CORY LOGISTICS
MARK COOKE HEAD OF KEY CLIENT DEVELOPMENT
What is your position now and what were your previous positions in the business? Today I am head of key client development, a varied role that caters to all parts of the business. I’ve had several roles both within Cory and the group's previous freight forwarding division Gibbons Freight, where I became commercial director and specifically responsible for development of our business in the Middle East. We built that business to more than 1000 TEU of groupage cargo. I also looked after our VIP accounts, some of which we still have today. I moved back into Cory in 2003, reaching the position of board director until 2018. I still thoroughly enjoy the business but have reduced my hours to spend time with my grandchildren.
How long have you been with Cory and when did you start?
What are you responsible for now and what actual working roles do you fulfil?

MEET THE TEAM ...A CHAT WITH THE PROJECT CARGO TEAM AT CORY LOGISTICS JIM CONYER PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
One particularly memorable project that I managed was to transport the component parts from China and Malaysia for a new factory build in Ukraine. To ensure the success of the project involved months of very detailed planning and included a pre-shipment site visit to Ukraine to ensure it was possible to deliver the larger pieces to their required positions on the site. It was necessary to charter two heavy-lift-geared vessels to accommodate all the large pieces. The largest item measured 13.5 metres in diameter and 8 metres in height and weighed 126 tonnes. Special care had to be taken to ensure that the stresses of transporting the piece from the factory site in Malaysia onto a barge, lifting the piece off the barge at Port Kelang onto the vessel and the long sea voyage to Ukraine did not distort the outer casing, as this could cause irreparable damage to the balanced mechanism inside the casing.
I joined Cory Logistics Projects department based in Felixstowe in 2007 (after they acquired Fred Olsen Forwarding). What does Projects do? We create solutions for our customers. We provide shipping and transport services to move the smallest to some of the heaviest and biggest pieces, to most locations around the world. Using all modes and usually with a few headaches! My responsibilities include developing new and existing customers, procurement, project planning and execution, documentation, customs clearance, arranging barge, coaster and geared vessel charters. Crane and heavy haulage hire, freight bookings with container lines and RO/RO operators.

To ensure the piece was transported safely, we provided the services of a naval architect from our parent company Braemar PLC to design a special steel transport frame to support the cargo whilst in transit, together with a lashing plan to secure the cargo safely below deck on the vessel. I am pleased to say that all cargo was delivered successfully and on time. There has been a down turn in projects over the last couple of years, but I am pleased to say that this year we have seen an increase in project enquiries. Part of our success in securing new business this year can be attributed to having the right, like-minded overseas partners. For me there are no two days the same; my day to day role is constantly changing to ensure our customer’s requirements are met and this gives me great satisfaction. The special service that I provide is simply to provide a bespoke service to ensure that our customs cargo is moved in the safest, most cost-effective way and within the time frame required. In Projects, I have found that the key to success is taking the initial time to fully understand the customer’s requirements, plan a course of action and, above all, keep the customer informed.

e're fast approaching the end of the year, but we still have some of the biggest topics yet to discuss. Our next issue focuses on ocean freight and shipping lines.
As we said in our Regional Focus article about the Mediterranean, these container-laden behemoths carry the majority of the world's freight, so in a way we're saving the best till last. Following that, for the December issue we're covering customs clearance and bonded warehousing, which by then will be an even more pertinent topic than it is now. Who knows what the new year will bring and where logistics will be blown by the political winds? Stay with us to find out... Tim Headford, Graphic Designer, FORWARDER
