rising wages across the sector – good news, in light of current staff shortages. Industry giants such as XPO are reporting huge rises in e-commerce, which in turn is driving an increase in their seasonal job offerings from the same period in 2017. In FORWARDER magazine, we have been following the
adoption of technology within the logistics industry since our launch. Emerging tech is being taken up in higher frequencies, essential in such a rapidly expanding market. There will always be those with opposing views, particularly when considering an industry where personability and connections have long been a business driver, however attitudes in North America in particular are welcoming to this tech revolution. Ultimately, digitalisation within logistics is non-negotiable. The earliest adopters will have the strongest market position, as routine processes are quickly automated. The rise of e-commerce only pushes this need for disruption further. One thing that has been notably absent from much of the conversation is security – is this something which logistics companies are addressing in the midst of their rush to digitalise? AMERICAN AIRLINES CARGO
ENDS 2017 ON A HIGH NOTE A merican’s Cargo organization announced an overall cargo traffic growth for 2017, up 15% from the previous calendar year.
This significant improvement followed a year-long effort to continue streamlining the customer experience with the introduction of new
self-service tools to automate and improve the booking process alongside further implementation of new services like proactive shipment re-accommodation. Throughout 2017, the carrier also announced a series of business enhancements regarding its green initiatives, pharma capabilities and infrastructure, additional wide body routes and new destinations. Additionally, the airline celebrated its third consecutive Cargo Airline of the Year award in 2017 and 10th Cargo Airline of the Americas award, among others.

Our mission is to help our clients succeed by overcoming their logistical constraints and we are committed to innovative solutions for our customers to address industry-wide challenges. The labour market is tight, especially during peak seasons, and we want to enable our team to better execute for our customers. And in this case, the technological support of robots effectively solved the challenge. Marie-Christine Lombard, Chief Executive Officer, Geodis
The success of the pilot started with simplifying GEODIS employee training. Rather than spending hours in the classroom, team members were instructed on how to pick to the robots on the warehouse floor, completing the training within a matter of minutes. The messaging on the robots is displayed in their preferred languages allowing for faster absorption of training and a decrease in picking errors. Picking units to the robots also reduced physical demand by eliminating the need to pull pick carts and decreasing overall travel. We are very proud to welcome GEODIS as a customer. Our robots enhance more than worker productivity; they improve worker job satisfaction by removing some of the more physically demanding aspects of the picking process. We look forward to continuing to help the GEODIS team drive operating efficiencies. Rick Faulk, CEO, Locus Robotics

Tell us about how Freighabase developed. Freightabase has always been something I have felt passionate about. MOVE IT LIKE... Q A
How did you overcome your biggest challenge? The biggest challenge is simple: clients won’t commit until they know it works. To be fair, neither would I! So the solution was to charge carriers to be listed either under the countries they ship to, or the services the offer. We offered our clients a month completely free of charge. The challenge, with any marketing, is getting clients to commit and allocate enough budget to allow us to get the product to work. The solution was keeping the pricing very simple and being able to produce tangible results. Ultimately, people don’t mind paying for something if they know it works. We can run our clients a report on every quote the site has generated at any time, providing tangible results that our client feels comfortable with and wish to continue investing in.

I was delighted to appear in the FORWARDER magazine ‘Move it Like’ showcase earlier this
year. The opportunity to speak candidly about the success of our company, my influence on that, and
the ingredients that contribute to our continued success was appreciated. NNR is a global ‘premium brand’ that, although established for over a 100 years in Asia, is not particularly well known in the UK. The feature in Forwarder Magazine offered the stage for us to future promote our business. The moniker ‘secret assassin’ and ‘largest company you’ve never heard of’ no longer suits the brand and size of our global group, therefore features like ‘Move it Like’ in a classy glossy such as FORWARDER are the perfect vehicle to help change that perception. Now I’ve recovered from the marginal discomfort
of a little more attention than normal (!), I can reflect that it provided a strong and personal message that many of our key partners and customers read and responded favourably too. Lee Griffiths, NNR

The law of abnormal When transporting abnormal loads, laws and regulations can differ from country to country, making sure you know exactly what to expect and where is vital. For example, in the UK the law requires that if your vehicle and load movements exceed standard dimensions, then you need to pre-notify the police, highway and bridge authorities. The length of notice you need to give and whether an attendant is compulsory hinges on the vehicle dimensions and weight.
What qualifies as abnormal? As a rough guide when thinking about the requirements for abnormal in the UK comes from the following list of criteria. A weight of more than 44,000 kilograms. An axle load of more than 10,000 kilograms for. A single non-driving axle and 11,500 kilograms for a single driving axle. A width of more than 2.9 metres. A rigid length of more than 18.65 metres. If you need any further guidance on exactly what qualifies the transportation of an abnormal load, you can find all the information you need at www.gov.uk. Planning, planning, planning Billions of dollars of project-critical equipment is shipped around the world annually. High levels of risk are associated with these shipments due to the nature of the abnormality, transport logistics, and tight timeframes. Planning your route and exactly what needs to be in place ahead of time will make sure that these billions of dollars are not wasted. Hire experts who have dealt with similar cargo, or the sector in general, and you’ll see that costs for single parts are affordable, there is almost no height limit on container vessels and on top of this, weekly departures to make sure you are running on schedule. Additionally, more than $5 billion in state and local tax revenues are generated by business activities related to the port. The port has been instrumental in the city of Houston's development as a center of international trade. It is home to sprawling petrochemical complex, the largest in the nation and second largest in the world. Carrier services on all major trade lanes link Houston to international markets around the globe. The ship channel also intersects a very busy barge traffic lane, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Companies that do business internationally also find Houston attractive because of its well-developed financial infrastructure, skilled work force and diverse population. Due to historical and cultural links the USA and the United Kingdom have always been major trading partners, which creates opportunities aplenty in the freight and logistics sector. However, despite sharing a language, it can be a market which is both complex and entirely different from other markets across the globe. For example, much of the business is bought and sold on a door to door basis. When managing the supply chain not only is the forwarder concerned with the end to end movement, but also all parties who operate alongside. of different ports, each with their own customs and regulations so when moving freight to inland destinations having the right representation and knowledge can be a real advantage. Another factor to consider when shipping to the US is selecting the correct entry point as this can have a direct impact on cost savings and supply chain efficiencies. In 2015, there was a shut-down at Long Beach port on the west coast which led to severe congestion. This had a huge impact on importers, especially for the transpacific trade from Asia who use this port as the main entry point into the US. Many decided to switch service to New York on the East Coast incurring longer transits and rail cargo across country. This came at an additional cost but in overall terms led to a more reliable service as a result. Recently, the situation at Long Beach has improved, opening up to importers once more.

NEW MARKETS
Amazon is taking over from Google as a product search engine, and what they have done well is wait and market themselves as a simple, de-cluttered marketplace. If you own any sort of business, looking at Amazon's business model and approach to marketing is a must. Due to the resurgence from the online platform, they have been able to corner markets such as voice assistance and staffless shops, instead of joining in the already saturated phone markets etc., allowing them, uniquely, to advertise effectively using a range of techniques. This has pushed e-commerce retailers to adapt their attribution models to understand that new audiences gained on social media tend to visit a site, engage and eventually purchase. This doesn’t happen every time, but by marketing the right service to the right audience, the process becomes easier. Looking at marketing models from leaders in various industries is an effective way of developing your marketing in a smaller company.
