WELCOME TO FREMANTLE FESTIVAL: 10 NIGHTS IN PORT In our sunlit months, Fremantle is roaring and open. Our food, music, art and culture spill outside as we tread lively paths around the boulevards and beaches. Then as winter approaches, the Indian Ocean turns unpredictable and sends icy messages to bluster down our streets and against our windowpanes: biting gales, grumpy cumulus and spitting rain. As a community, we go inside. The labyrinth of stately, historic buildings, clutching to the shore of this wind-blasted port begins to warm up from the inside out. We light the lamps, tread the old floorboards and reacquaint ourselves with the eccentric, winding interiors of the homes, pubs, halls and stages that have patiently waited for us to return.

Fremantle in winter is a time to discover the city’s hidden nooks and crannies, to settle in, rummage up some heartening food, sip steaming tonics and swap tales and melodies by the hearth. 10 Nights in Port celebrates the way that the Fremantle community bands together and the city itself seems to draw us close during the cold months. Over 10 wintry evenings, immerse yourself in a raft of contemporary music, theatre, visual arts, film and live performance created by some of Fremantle’s most prized local acts and a band of international acts swept into our welcoming harbour.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

The 10 Nights in Port program foregrounds projects which are one-off, site-specific, locally developed or participatory. Spread across Fremantle’s precincts, they take into consideration the traditions of the local community and the character of its historic buildings. Each part of the festival is carefully woven out of the fabric of this place. The annual musical treasure hunt of Hidden Treasures opens up some of the city’s longest-running workers’ clubs, bringing together the distinctive taps, carpets and dartboards of Aussie clubhouses with great local music. With Glass Houses & Green Futures, five custom-built artists’ greenhouses will be erected around Fremantle’s community precincts in homage to local, green-thumbed gardening aficionados. All in the Family is a reunion of some of Freo’s best local music dynasties, whose talent and love of local performance venues spans the generations. 10 Nights in Port is a time to celebrate the undeniably special character of Fremantle and the creative community whose music, performances and artworks bring us together. I am excited to see the Fremantle Festival reimagined for the winter months. I hope you enjoy it. Brad Pettitt City of Fremantle Mayor

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF COUNTRY

The City of Fremantle are grateful to the Whadjuk Noongar people on whose Country our festival takes place. We extend our deepest respect to their elders; past, present and emerging. HIDDEN TREASURES

7PM, THU 11 – SUN 14 JULY SECRET LOCATION, CENTRAL FREMANTLE $175+BF

In its ninth year, Hidden Treasures treats WA music fans to an earful of Freo balladeers, freshly-minted local bands and some favourite heroes of the Port City stage.

This series of gigs offers a rare peak into some of the West End’s most evocative and tucked-away workers’ clubs and small venues, which are steeped in the tall stories and big sounds of Fremantle’s musical folklore. Step out of the cold and into an enduring, eccentric institute or clubhouse and get to know the bands you need to see and the ones you love.

PHANTOM ISLANDS Phantom islands, which appear and disappear from our maps, are usually created by the reports of early sailors exploring new realms.

Some are purely made-up, such as the Isle of Demons and some stem from the faulty measurement of actual islands. Others arise due to navigational errors, optical illusions or the misidentification of floating phenomena like icebergs or fog banks caused by underwater volcanoes. Voyage forth into the expansive gallery floors of PSAS to experience three phantom islands, dreamed into being by landscape designer Andrew Beck, sound artist Ned Beckley and visual artist Tom Mùller. THE MISS BEHAVE GAMESHOW

FOGOTTEN

Cracks in the topography of our Port City reveal a subterranean world below, hidden in darkness and wreathed in fog.

The Miss Behave Gameshow lands for the first time in WA in a perfect storm of games, disco, dubious prizes and hilarity.

At harbours all around the world such fogs regularly roll in, quietly and ominously, from the sea. In Fremantle things are different. Fog rises upwards to the streets. Unseen vapours are freed into the dark reaches of the night, oozing from long-forgotten limestone tunnels and chambers below, where souls remain trapped, their stories woven into the haze.

Direct from their permanent Las Vegas residency and sold-out seasons in London, Sydney, and San Francisco, London cabaret queen Miss B (La Soiree, La Clique,) hosts this part-gameshow, part freewheeling, high-energy variety whirlwind. Be intoxicated by Miss Behave’s special brand of glittering chaos as you navigate her non-stop games and hilarious capers. Everyone’s a winner! How something this much fun hasn’t been criminalised is a minor miracle!– LONDONIST Image: Prudence Upton

GLASS HOUSES & GREEN FUTURES

Glass Houses & Green Futures is a celebration of the horticultural knowledge and passion that exists across Fremantle. Conversation and cultivation will take place in five artist-built hothouses, led by the artists and gardening enthusiasts who keep Fremantle green, growing and blossoming. Experience the history of gardening and imagine its future while sharing and exchanging local stories, botanical knowledge, growing skills and plants. The program of events will unfold with the shared knowledge from the people of White Gum Valley Community Orchard, Hilton Harvest Community Garden, Stackwood, Ecoburbia and more. Drop by your local public session or make a tour of all five.

Occasionally, local fog activity surges for reasons unknown. The fissures open, and night owls and dawn treaders bare witness. Festival fog spotters will discover untold tales of foggy phenomena captured on film or popping up in impromptu locations throughout 10 Nights in Port. Only the keeneyed will uncover the secrets that seep through the port town. Image courtesy Genrefonix
