FREMANTLE H E R I TA G E F E S T I VA L 2 0 17 26 MAY to 5 JUNE
WELC to the 2 0 1 7 F R E MAN T L E This year’s Fremantle Heritage Festival celebrates those who have created history and along the way made a lasting contribution to what Fremantle is today. Some of these contributions were planned, some accidental, but all are worth reflecting on. One of the biggest contributions to Fremantle’s modern history was the America’s Cup Defence in 1987. It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since Fremantle took its place on the world stage to host the most prestigious sailing race of them all. Our port city underwent major redevelopment in the lead-up to the Cup in anticipation of the world’s media attention and influx of spectators. Paying homage to the legendary race as part of this year’s festival, the National Hotel is teaming up with the WA Maritime Museum to present the America's Cup Defence 30th Anniversary Dinner – a night of tall tales, dinner and dancing. This year’s festival keynote speaker, Nelson Woss, is a contemporary filmmaker who has documented Australian heritage as the producer of films such as Red Dog and Ned Kelly. I’m looking forward to hearing him share his insights before a screening of Red Dog at the University of Notre Dame Australia.

OM E HERITAGE FESTIVAL Fremantle’s legendary West End is again a focal point for the festival. Since the last Fremantle Heritage Festival, the entire West End has been included in the State Register of Heritage Places. This is a fantastic achievement which ensures that Fremantle’s heritage buildings can be enjoyed by future generations. The festival is a great time to engage with this historic precinct by taking a tour of some of the beautifully restored buildings or by listening to sea shanties in the Whalers’ Tunnel. There are of course plenty of other ways to engage with Fremantle’s heritage as part of the festival. From a murder mystery dinner at the Esplanade Hotel to a quiz about the history of beer at Little Creatures, classic rock and reggae bands at Mojo’s and a film festival celebrating travel. As always, there’s something for everyone.

FISHERMAN Style #132
Yes, this is Western Australia’s longest running reggae night, number #132 in a succession of as many months - the night began 11 years ago. Sean and Anthony AKA Drummie and Sherrif Lindo started Fisherman Style as there were no decent reggae parties that they could rely on. Since then there have been artists from all over the world and many locals, including Sherrif and Drummie’s collective Earthlink Sound, that have manifested the Fisherman Style night. This Fisherman Style 11th Birthday Bashment will make use of the empty block across the road from Mojo’s Bar. A special family friendly version of the event will run from 6pm-10pm and then a more exclusive version of the night will continue into the wee hours at Mojo’s Bar. BEARING WITNESS, AND THE ARTIST AS HISTORIAN: FREE TALK BY PROF DEBORAH GARE

The artist, Hans Holbein, engineered the royal wedding between Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves—and doomed it to failure when, in real life, the princess did not live up to the beauty of her portrait. In another country, and another century, Eugene Delacroix recorded the uprising of the French people in 1830 in his iconic work ‘Liberty Leading the People’. Can history be read through works of art? In this fascinating talk Notre Dame’s professor of history, Deborah Gare, will reveal how art bears witness to extraordinary events of our past and how painters might sometimes be considered historians. Due to the popularity of Notre Dame’s festival talks, this year’s weekday program will be available to both morning and evening audiences.

EXHIBITIONS FREMANTLE WEST END: A METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH TO CONSERVATION AND ADAPTIVE REUSE Fr ee EVENT
“Imbued with a message from the past, the historic monuments of generations of people remain to the present day as living witnesses to their age-old traditions." (Venice Charter, IInd International Congress of Architects
COASTER Culture Step into the historic Wyola Club to view a unique display of beer coasters from days gone by. Just a quick glance will take you back in time and across the seas to some forgotton bar. This collection of more than 4000 coasters has been gathered over decades and sourced from bars all over the world including Europe, Asia, The Americas and of course Australia. See how the humble coaster has tracked the changes in our society and the novel ways advertising has tried to engage with us over a drink. Included in this exhibition is a look back at the historic Wyola RSL Club, which operated for 75 years at this location. Find out the stories of the people who were a part of the club and the epic tale of the little tug boat that became a legend, The SS Wyola. WHEN 26 May 12:00pm - 4:00pm 27 May 12:00pm - 4:00pm 28 May 12:00pm - 4:00pm 2 June 12:00pm - 4:00pm
In November 2016 the Minister for Heritage entered Fremantle’s West End in the Heritage State Register. In 2016 the UWA Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Art dedicated an Architectural Design Master studio to the rehabilitation of the Fremantle West End heritage precinct. The students conducted research on a heritage building of their interest, identified historic and aesthetic values, surveyed and documented through drawings the preservation status and needs, define compatible uses and finally developed the adaptive reuse project. The research initiated a novel collaboration between UWA and City of Fremantle. The output will be presented at the exhibition. Twenty students of the UWA Masters of Architecture program designed a new life for twenty different buildings, in respect of the principles of the Burra Charter and the City policies. Each building has been surveyed, studied and analysed through free hand, digital drawings and models to achieve the necessary knowledge that guides sensitive and successful design proposals.
