EDITOR’S NOTE I’ll be the first to say that we’re not a newspaper. We’re not. We’re a magazine, an editorial publication with opinion pieces and articles discussing an array of topics related to the Central Valley. And if you ever catch us referring to the Flyer as a “paper,” it means we’re merely referencing the physical material the words are printed on, nothing more. We do have deep aspirations to include in-depth journalism on our pages one day, but we’re not there yet. The reason I bring it up is that I find that people have a hard time telling the difference between news and anything that isn’t. It means that we’re losing touch with our ability to critically think and evaluate what’s in front of us as a society. Let’s face it, how many times have you reacted to a headline before reading or watching the entire story? Or didn’t double-check the site that headline was coming from? Here’s the harder question: How often do you look at news outside of social media? Because that’s the real kicker, many of us don’t go out of our way to get information from a variety of sources, making things worse. When we agree with a point of view, we’re less likely to question or criticize its legitimacy. We don’t wonder if it’s 100% accurate or if there’s some ulterior motive. Call it human nature, but if it sides with our beliefs, we absorb it as truth. And that’s exactly how social media works – it is designed to feed us more and more of what we like so

that we stay on the platform longer and longer. And yes, that includes news. So, your newsfeed could look entirely different from mine, with a constant barrage of opposing viewpoints from not so credible sources that would ultimately put us at odds. And passionately, I might add. It’s become the basis for so many arguments that almost never find common ground. The root cause of a deep divide between our neighbors and us. You ever heard the saying, “there are three sides to every story, your side, my side, and the truth”? It’s probably the best advice I’ve ever been given about analyzing and digesting information that’s been given to me. It’s amazingly easy to do with media outlets I don’t agree with, but it’s an uphill battle to practice with those that I do. However, I make it a point to work through it by asking myself a couple of fundamental questions. What could they have left out? Who created the story, and what is the purpose? What values does it depict, and how would different people interpret this? Processing information through a critical lens ensures that the conclusions we draw are our own. It makes us aware of any motive for division and helps give us an openness that allows for common ground. It gives us a better chance at unity – something I’m sure we all feel we could use more of these days.

The Fresno Rainbow Pride Parade 30th anniversary celebration is on hold, for now. By Lisa Talley | lisa@fresnoflyer.com

I

t’s a gut punch,” reflects Jefferey Robinson, Co-Chair, and CEO of Fresno Rainbow Pride’s parent organization, Community Link. The COVID-19 pandemic has undeniably changed 2020, and with it, the cancellation of all the large events and celebrations slated for the entire year, including Fresno’s Pride parade. While recognizing and respecting the need to ensure the public’s safety, Robinson explains that it still doesn’t make losing the beloved event any less painful for the community. “[Pride is] almost like a rite of passage. It’s a place where we can be rejuvenated … [when] we feel oppressed or under the microscope or judged, we don’t have the ability to always be as out as we want to be. For many people, they need this event, and others like it to refresh their souls and gather new strength to carry on and move forward.” Fresno’s Pride parade and celebration have, for what would have been 30 years, this year, also served as the kickoff event for ‘Pride season.’ While June is officially dubbed ‘Pride Month’ (in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots that sparked the gay liberation movement), parades and celebrations continue well into the fall— ending in November with Palm Springs’ marking of the occasion. In fact, many California cities don’t overlap dates, making it easy for people to attend multiple events across the state without conflict. Fresno Pride creates a springboard into the exciting months ahead for many in the community

who then travel to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacramento, or San Diego, for example. But with a pandemic in full swing and an unpredictable timeline for a resolution, losing the Fresno Pride celebration means a halt to the entire season that was to follow. A hard-hitting reality for the LGBTQ community. Acknowledging this, many organizations have found a way to continue honoring Pride, Fresno among them. “We are on pause, and during that pause or intermission, we’re going to have the ‘Quarantine Edition’ as a placeholder, something for us to connect and celebrate with our community, allies, and friends about Pride in general,” Robinson shares. Fr e s n o Rainbow Pride’s original theme was ’30 years of Pride,’ a direct reference to their 30 years of work within the community and ongoing organizing of the event. While this ‘Quarantine Edition’ is a modification of the celebration, it won’t carry over the initial theme. The organization also determined that the parade would not be rescheduled into the fall when it is likely that large gatherings and events would see an authorization to start up again from health officials. According to Robinson, the decision is rooted purely in logistics and an appreciation for the other organizers who typically host | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

their events in the later months. Attempting to reschedule a massive celebration such as Fresno’s Rainbow Pride Parade outside of their usual time-frame would not only likely interfere on an already cramped calendar, but would also create competition for resources that would limit everyone’s ability to acquire what they need. Something the organization sees as ‘stepping on the toes’ of many of their neighbors. “We are going to have the 30th annual Pride parade when it is appropriate when it is safe to do so. And if that means it happens in 2021, that’s when the actual 30th parade will happen,” Robinson explains. In the meantime, Fresno Rainbow Pride has come up with multiple virtual events to help ease the sense of loss felt by the community in the canceled parade. On Saturday, June 6, the organization will host its ‘Quarantine Edition,’ live-streamed to their social media accounts. The stream includes a schedule of live performances from Drag Queens and Kings, musical sets put together by local DJs, pre-recorded videos of community members expressing what Pride means to them, and sponsors sharing their work on behalf of the community. Leaders, Grand Mar-

shals, and local politicians will also say a few words. These and archival footage from past parades will grace the stream in a montage of Pride celebration. Shortly after, within a couple of weeks, Fresno Rainbow Pride will host ‘Pride at Home.’ The theme is virtual and encourages people to put together their best Pride outfits and strut their stuff at home. Again, the submissions will stream on the organization’s social media platforms. “Many people spend a lot of time putting together their Pride outfit. Even if you’re a casual guy or gal, you’ve got it kind of planned out with a Pride shirt, beads, a hat, a bow, or something you’ve bought [specifically] for coming out to the Pride parade,” elaborates Robinson. To culminate the month-long celebration, the organization plans to put together a car parade of sorts. Like the drive-by congratulations of birthdays and graduations seen throughout the pandemic – a way to unite in the festivities while honoring the social distancing guidelines – Fresno Rainbow Pride will create a similar moment for the occasion. Participants are encouraged to decorate their cars as wildly and, as Robinson says, “as fabulously,” as possible. The organization will film the event for release on their social media accounts. Details on when and where it all takes place are to be determined. Interested parties can follow Fresno Rainbow Pride online for updates as

FIVE TINY EFFORTS By Nadine Pourier Blumenshine npbwellnesscoach@gmail.com

K, so the shelter-in-place guidelines are changing. You’ve likely tried to step up your exercise/eating/health game during this past couple of months or let that all slide as you did your best to make it through these times. Or... maybe both situations have popped up during your quarantine time. Regardless of what you’ve done, you might be looking for something simple that helps your body and mind feel like you’re taking care of yourself as you head into a ‘normal’ life. Here are five simple habits you can put into place that are easy to repeat and don’t require a lot of effort. They’re tiny, health-centered, and manageable. The one I started with several years ago when I began to focus on getting healthier was short morning walks. Over time, those walks have become a routine that I use nearly every morning. Start with one or two that you think you can fit into your life. Recruit loved ones to join you.

l Move for at least 10 minutes every day. Choose something you like to do and is simple for you to accomplish. You’ll have greater success if you like it, and it’s simple. A bonus to aiming for only a few minutes is that it will go by so quickly you’ll decide you want to do more!

things progress. For those looking to fill their season with even more Pride, Robinson also hosts a monthly radio show. ‘It’s a Queer Thang’ airs every third Friday from 5 pm - 6 pm on 88.1FM (also available to live stream on www.KFCF.org). This month’s show is dedicated to Pride and will not only cover the work Fresno Rainbow Pride has been doing in Fresno but others around the globe. A notable mention is the Global Pride virtual event taking place on Saturday, June 27. “Pride organisations from across the world will celebrate Global Pride 2020. With musical and artistic performances, speeches from activists and campaigners, and addresses by public figures, we will stream 24 hours of content that reflects and celebrates the beautiful diversity of LGBTI+ people everywhere.” (Quoted from their website, www.GlobalPride2020.org) The June episode of ‘It’s a Queer Thang,’ unlike the Fresno Rainbow Pride virtual events, is only available live when it airs. Due to copyright licenses for the music played during the show, the episode will not see a repeat broadcast. Listeners will have to tune-in at the exact time to catch the show or risk missing the experience altogether. However, the radio show does run all year round and continues to discuss a variety of topics related to the LGBTQ community. Recent episodes have mainly geared towards the COVID-19 pandemic. Discussions include organizations that have shifted their service delivery, highlights of virtual support groups, and how people can stay connected during this time. But the general conversation remains around a constant theme. “We like to say, it’s always good queer talk, music, news, and events,” shares Robinson. Fresno Rainbow Pride also has projects in the works that continue throughout the year, beyond the annual Pride celebration, such as the Oral History project under the larger Qistory umbrella. ‘Qistory’ (queer history) seeks to document, record, store, and preserve the LGBTQ history in Fresno and the Central Valley. The Oral History project revolves around recording individual testimonies on personal experiences in the community. Stories such as

Jeffery Robinson and his husband Juan Bustamante with Renee Potik and her wife Kay Taus

those from the elderly about their lives as a queer person in the Central Valley throughout the decades. Just before the stay-at-home orders swept through the state, Fresno Rainbow Pride partnered with StoryCorps, a non-profit organization whose mission is “to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world,” to record numerous testimonies. Residents may remember a stylish airstream trailer parked outside of CMAC’s building in downtown Fresno earlier this year – that was StoryCorps’ traveling recording studio. Robinson and other organizers worked with the non-profit to coordinate and record several stories from members of the LGBTQ community, growing the Oral History library. “StoryCorps said they had not [seen] that large of a response in their travels and were really impressed at the turnout. We pushed hard to the community [that they] needed to take part in this,” Robinson furthers. Those recordings will live in not only the Qistory archives, but also the Library of Congress, where StoryCorps collections will become a permanent part of American history. Stories are also available on their website, www.StoryCorps.org.

l Always have a filled water bottle handy, and keep it with you throughout the day. l Drinking water rather than sweetened beverages have so many benefits for your body. If you always have the water bottle with you, it will be easier to avoid the other drinks.

And Fresno Rainbow Pride is still looking for contributions from the public. Currently, concerning safe practices during the pandemic, recordings of personal testimony are on pause. However, Qistory also seeks to preserve items that speak to the culture of the LGBTQ community. Things such as business cards from a gay business, ashtrays, matchbooks, or shot glasses bearing a gay bar or club’s logo on it, political buttons, fliers, posters, ads, love letters between couples in a long-lasting relationship – “literally anything” as Robinson says. The organization wishes to add these materials to its archives for future display. Anyone unsure that an item qualifies or has questions about how to submit an object, email clinkinc@aol.com for more information. While the traditional celebration of Pride may not be available this year, organizations across cities, states, and even the world are finding ways to continue honoring it – both during the season and all year long. Pride may be in an intermission, but it is certainly not forgotten. 6. For the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in 1994, Gilbert Baker was commissioned to make the world’s largest rainbow flag. The flag used the six-stripe design that’s popular today, and measured thirty feet wide. The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed it as the largest flag in the world, but it has since lost the title. Baker made another giant rainbow flag in 2003 that stretched a mile and a quarter across Key West, Florida.

OPINION

PART I By I. smiley G. Calderón | smileygcalderon@gmail.com

Y

ou can’t go anywhere nowadays without seeing a multitude of half-covered concerned faces with their big sweaty brows and squinty little eyes moving to and fro. It’s today’s mask culture, and some say it’s here to stay for good. Aargh. Really? Yes, really. And it’s all because of that horrible ubiquitously pernicious novel SARS-CoV-2 virus. This disease has already swiftly killed over 100,000 Americans these past few months. Ordinary daily life, with all of its mundane activities and simple public pleasantries, has become very complicated very quickly. Now when you’re out in public and hear the guy right behind you cough or sneeze, your fight or flight adrenaline response kicks in. You wonder if he’s spewing coronavirus or not. And immediately, before you even turn around - you’re hoping he’s wearing a mask. Why? Because despite how stupid that mask makes you feel or look, deep down inside, you know that it is the only effective protective measure against this horrific respiratory contagion when you’re out in public around others. It is. And that’s because we know this coronavirus is actively spread as an aerosol in the air as microscopic droplets that come out of an infected person when coughing, sneezing, huffing, and puffing - or even just talking. And that’s a fact. And here’s another disturbing fact: this virus is highly infectious - super contagious - much more contagious than the flu. It spreads like a damn wildfire on a hot scorching summer’s day. But the real tricky deadly part is that some infected people don’t even know they are infected

6

and contagious until they infect others who show symptoms. And by then, it’s already too late. We have no known effective cure for COVID-19; we don’t have a vaccine yet either. If you’re one of the unlucky ones who develop COVID-19 symptoms, your nightmare ensues. Experts from the WHO (World Health Organization) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommend the public use of masks and face coverings in a risk-based approach to contain and prevent coronavirus spreading. Cities, counties, and even some states across the U.S. have made wearing masks in public mandatory (although many have rescinded such orders due to public and political pressure) because it is proven to hinder the spread of COVID-19. And where laws fail to enforce and protect public health and the safety of its citizens, responsible private companies like Costco Wholesale have made wearing masks obligatory whether you like it or not. But some people just aren’t having it. They’d rather die than wear a mask. Literally. That same ‘patriot’ who vows he would do ‘anything’ to protect his country is also the first guy you’ll see refusing to wear a mask. Because ‘it’s a free country’ or because it ‘infringes upon his rights,’ or some other bogus excuse. It’s not about his freedoms or rights - It’s about everyone else’s right to stay healthy and alive.

In a video shared on social media, Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the CDC, tells viewers that “wearing a cloth-based covering while in public is an important practice to slow the spread of the coronavirus.” He says it simply: “Me wearing a cloth-based covering protects you, and you wearing a clothbased covering protects me.” America’s top immunologist, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a prominent member of the White House Coronavirus Taskforce and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), also emphasized the importance of wearing face masks in a live TV interview: “I wear it for the reason that I believe it is effective…I do it when I’m in public for the reasons: A) I want to protect myself and protect others, and also because [B] I want to make it be a symbol for people to see that that’s the kind of thing you should be doing.” So, if you care about your neighbor and your country, wear a mask. If you care about your family and yourself, wear a mask. It’s as simple as that. At this point, if you don’t wear one while you’re out in public, you just don’t care. And stop with all of the stupid excuses about personal freedoms, too - your personal freedoms end when they endanger others. With this novel coronavirus, you can be infected and contagious at any time without even knowing it. That makes everyone a potential threat - including you - despite how healthy you promise you are.

“But some people just aren’t having it. They’d rather die than wear a mask. Literally.”

Dr. Fauci made it crystal clear in his interview about wearing masks in public: “It’s sort of respect for another person and have that other person respect you. You wear a mask, and they wear a mask you protect each other.” Simple neighborly respect. Why is that so hard for Americans? Mask-it or casket is what I always say. But, anti-maskers have a million excuses. It’s unhealthy, they say. Well, so is getting infected by a voracious novel coronavirus. They think this whole pandemic is just hype - and they’re not buying it. After all, here in Fresno County, we’ve ‘only’ had some 35 documented COVID-19 deaths out of a population of 1 million. That’s a mortality rate of a mere 0.0035%, right? So, why is everyone taking this ‘virus hoax’ so seriously? Pastor Mark Wallace, who spent a month hospitalized with coronavirus at Fresno’s Kaiser Permanente, had this to say to these naysayers when finally leaving the hospital in a wheelchair: “Everyone has to just take a deep breath and realize that …it’s not the government taking our freedom…if they see this side of it, what I went through. They’re just trying to protect as many thousands of people as they can from having to go through the same thing - I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my very worst enemy in the world.” Tammy Wallace, his wife, who contracted coronavirus but only experienced a fever and then fully recovered without any hospitalization, couldn’t agree more: “When it touches someone in your family like the way it touches ours, you can’t wear a mask long enough…”

PRIDE INSIDE: THE SOURCE By Dave Fountinelle | dave@fresnoflyer.com

I

n the roughly four and half years since forming, The Source has provided spaces and resources for the LGBT+ community in Kings and Tulare counties from their Visalia location. Their mission has been to encourage learning and growth, provide a place of belonging, and support the community through education, information, referrals, counseling, and any assistance they can offer. Through advocacy, partnerships, and fundraising, they seek to unite and advance the LGBT+ community. Nick Vargas is the Director of Development and Strategy for The Source. He took some time to talk with Fresno Flyer about himself, his organization, and how the current events have impacted Pride. DF: What inspires you and gives you hope for the equality movement here in the valley? NV: What motivates/inspires me: The fact that we have an LGBT+ Center on Main Street in Visalia is a big deal to me. When I was in high school, that would have been impossible. Not only do we have a center, but it’s also been relatively well-received by the community. When we opened, we weren’t sure what the reception would be. Many of the folks involved with LGBTQ issues and organizations before The Source had lived through Prop 8 and warned us it might not be easy. And it hasn’t been easy, but we’ve become a respected part of the local nonprofit community and been able to affect systems change in Tulare/Kings Counties. Our Pride Visalia event has drawn about 3,000 attendees for the last two years, including many straight allies. I’m thrilled that our events do very well. Drag Queen Bingo, Visalia Over the Edge, and others have been sold out and become popular. This is in part to the uniqueness of the events, and that our community really sees the need for what we do. And our events are FUN. There’s still a lot of room to grow. HIV primary care is nonexistent in our area, PrEP access is scarce, and the same can be said for Trans healthcare and HRT. Also, we still have a lot of room for progress on inclusivity and equality in general. We hear from people who still struggle to come out and are sometimes rejected by family or friends when they do. Social media comments and letters to the editor in opposition to the LGBTQ community are still common. DF: The COVID-19 pandemic made it clear months ago that Pride as many of us know it wasn’t going to be happening this month. Can you talk a little bit about what Pride Inside is and how the community is adjusting to still

honor Pride and celebrate in the time of social distancing? Pride Inside was our idea to have a community event on the day we had initially scheduled Pride Visalia, May 23, 2020. It included many of the aspects of an in-person Pride such as entertainment, education, and drag shows. We even had three celebrity appearances by Gus Kenworthy, Latrice Royal, and Lance Bass, who wished The Source and our community “Happy Pride.” People loved it. It’s still on social media for people to view.

test organizers. Individually, I know we are all donating to organizations on the frontlines of this movement and supporting in more direct ways. Pride month should be a potent reminder to the LGBTQ community that resistance is powerful. We need to stand with our Black siblings and do our part to dismantle systems of oppression.

DF: The killing of George Floyd has sparked national outrage. And with protests igniting as we enter June and Pride month, it’s impossible not to remember the Stonewall riots and their impact on the gay rights movement. Do that history and your own personal experiences affect your perspective on the protests? NV: I’m outraged at his killing and the murders of other Black people. We can’t compare the systemic oppression and racist history that Black people have had to endure with Stonewall. They aren’t the same. However, we do understand what it means to push back and stand up to a culture and system that tells us that we are less than and that our lives don’t matter. We recognize the intersectionality of our mission with Black Lives Matter. Our trans people of color are murdered on a regular basis. Words can’t describe how I feel. As an organization, we are meeting the moment by using our social media to bring awareness, our networks to spread information, and our youth to deliver water, snacks, and other supplies to pro-

NV: It depends on the person. There are a lot of ways to be an ally. Here are some of my ideas on how allies can support: 1. Donate to LGBT+ causes and centers. Pick a cause on Facebook and donate your birthday to it. It’s a great way to raise funds and visibility. 2. When you see, read, or hear incentive or derogatory comments, speak up. 3. Bring LGBTQ people to the table in your organizations, your businesses, and your network. 4. Attend LGBTQ events.

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

DF: For those in the hetero community who want to be allies and support the LGBTQ movement in the fight for equality and acceptance?

DF: Where and how would you like to see The Source continue to grow in the future? NV: I’d like to see us expand from our current location in the basement of Montgomery Square; for us to have a building and a bigger space for groups. I’d like us to continue to build out our HIV, Trans, Youth, and mental health programs. We have only part-time people but need full-time work on those programs. When there are health care crises and economic downturns like we see with COVID-19,

| FEATURED | DINING | CALENDAR | MUSIC | CLASSIFIEDS |

our LGBTQ community is disproportionally affected by a lack of access to health care and other resources. The Source has been able to distribute $40,000 in direct aid to our folks who needed help with food, utilities, rent, hygiene items, mental health, and other basics because of COVID-19. I’d like to see The Source continue to be supported by foundations and the community so that we can continue to provide meaningful aid at the moment. I want the community to know that we still need strong LGBTQ centers. When our folks feel safe and included in their communities, they build lives that benefit those communities. DF: Can you give a personal message for anyone who may need the services provided by The Source who might not even be aware of your organization? NV: I’d invite them to reach out to us directly on social media, email, phone, text, or any way they are comfortable. You don’t have to be out to come in. People can help the most right now by texting “Pride Inside” to 44-321, watching “Our Story” and donating. If they can’t right now, I totally understand. Please share the information and the video “Our Story” with others. Lastly, I’m happy to say that we have rescheduled Pride Visalia for October 10, 2020, from 11 am to 4 pm at the Old Lumberyard in Downtown Visalia. It might look a little different this year, depending on what the guidelines for safety include. Still, we feel it’s important to have it if we are at all able to. Please plan to attend, be a vendor, sponsor, or maybe even a volunteer. This month is Give Out Day. All month LGBTQ organizations are competing for donations and leaderboard prizes. The organization with the most $10 contributions will win $10,000. We’ve won the last two years in a row. Because of COVID-19 canceling our fundraisers and the sharp decrease in donations, we need your support to keep going. If we win the leaderboard prize, we will use half of it for our COVID-19 Relief Fund, and the other half to sustain our primary operations. Plus, we have a donor who is matching the first 1,000 $10 donations, so your donation will have a double impact, and a triple impact if we win the leaderboard prize. For more information, you can visit www.giveoutday. org/thesourcelgbt. If you would like to donate time, money, supplies, or other resources to The Source, and to get more information on how you can help make a difference for the LGBTQ community in your area, please visit www.thesourcelgbt.org. | FRESNO FLYER |

The World I Leave You: Asian American Poets on Faith and Spirit By Will Freeney | memo247365@gmail.com

F

resno’s inaugural poet laureate and Fresno City College English professor, Lee Herrick, and Leah Silvieus, his co-editor, have wrought a thing of wonder. The wonder is in the reading – wonder both in the sense of magic and in the spirit of awed contemplation. That is as it should be, for this collection of poems from a wide array of Asian American poets is, as the subtitle indicates, a consideration of the confluence, the intersection, of body and spirit, world and beyond. The insights are as varied as the authors and their voices, but they have been gathered in thematically imagined sections. The opening section (“When the Sky Unhinges, How Will We Survive: Poetry as Spiritual Witness”) seems uncannily apropos to this time of publication (coronavirus et al.), although the book project took years to come to fruition. Li-Young Lee’s poem, “The City in Which I Love You,” opens the section, with a statement that could be a description of our pandemic plight: “But in the city / in which I love you / no one comes, no one / meets me in the brick clefts, / in the wedged dark.” Ocean Vuong’s poem, “Notebook Fragments,” carries forward the contemplation of problematized life with a series of etymological considerations, personal historical realities, and epiphanies sublimated in “Yikes.” There is prayer there, though, and it is “Dear God if you are a season, let it be the one I passed through to get here.” The first line of Eugenia Leigh’s “Selah” provides the title for this section (“When the sky unhinges, how will we survive?”) and carries forward the contemplation of spirit in these times, declaring that “to worship is to survive is to be / wholly human, wholly / gripping the other hand.” The second poem in this section by Li-Young Lee (“Arise, Go Down”) inspires the book’s title (“I didn’t make the world I leave you with”). What is the nature of this world? It is “only this world, in which there is always / a family waiting in terror.” There is a strong temptation to include an excerpt from every poem/poet – in this section and throughout the book – for each of their unique expressions of their reality, sometimes expressed literally, sometimes metaphorically, always

Take, as the final example from this section, the words of Fresno’s own Brynn Saito (poet and MFA Creative Writing faculty member at Fresno State): “Slow-moving creatures with full bones and focus/lunge through the understory – / what do they know about flower-walking, flight moons.” (“Reincarnation”) Brynn also leads off the second section (“Waiting to Get Clear on her God-Thinking, She Went Out Into That Meadow Again: Locating the Divine in the Natural World”) with “How to Prepare the Mind for Lightning,” which finds a more whimsical voice for a no-less-serious contemplation, beginning with “In the recesses of the woman’s mind, / there is a warehouse. The warehouse / is covered in wisteria. The wisteria wonders / what it is doing in the mind of the woman. The woman wonders too” and ending with “When she bleeds the wisteria, the warehouse / in her mind is free and empty and the source / of all emptiness. It is free to house the night sky. It is free to hold nothing / but the boundless, empty, unimaginable dark.” This contemplation of nature takes on a slightly more serious tone and direct conceit when Li-Young Lee’s speaker in “Have You Prayed” finds himself “reminding myself / a flower is one station between / earth’s wish and earth’s rapture.”

The third section, “Who Will Pray for Me When You Are Gone?: Relationships with Cultural History and Ancestors”, is – like each of its predecessors – fairly thematically self-explanatory in its title. Patriarchal misogyny – no unique phenomenon to Asian cultures – is addressed by several poems in this section. From the opening “How to Eat Your Love” by Jennifer Kwon Dobbs, which concludes “You discard the extraneous girl / hide and scoop up the boy” to “Televangelism” by K-Ming Chang, which clarifies that “[w] hat a daughter costs / a mother must pay / out of body: she reaches / into her blood / like a wallet ... one man’s daughter / is another god’s revenge.” T h e fourth section, “We Were Brown and Immigrant: Spiritual Practice as a Form of Political R e s i s t a n c e ,” deals extensively in elegies and dirges – an unfortunate and seemingly ceaseless necessity in these times, but definitely a fulfillment of that subtitle. That spirit is captured (at least in one of its manifestations) in the final stanzas of Shin Yu Pai’s “Burning Monk”: “arhat folded in / the stillness / of full lotus / his body withering / his crown blackening / his flesh charring / his corpse collapsing / his heart refusing to burn / his heart refusing to burn / his heart refusing to burn.” The penultimate section, “Dearest

Father, Forgive Me For I Have Seen: On Doubt and Questions of Faith,” opens with the power of Ocean Vuong’s “Prayer for the Newly Damned,” which posits the eviscerating question, “what becomes of the shepherd / when the sheep are cannibals?” That is followed up with Matthew Olzmann’s “Nate Brown is Looking for a Moose,” a poem with a far more whimsical voice but no less serious a contemplation: “When I was a teenager, several of my friends / suddenly found God. / I tried but found only found pocket lint and angst ... What we’re looking for are miracles.” In the final section, “I Will Unlock the Latch of These Lips and Praise: Poems About Prayer and Ritual,” various poets’ perspectives on the practice(s) of spirituality are presented. From Oliver de la Paz’ sardonic condemnation of the Holy Roman Catholic church in “Dear Empire” (“Blessed be those who are smote by the light of its countenance. Blessed be them. As God speaks, the terrible imposition of his glare shuts the eyes of the believers settled in the pews”) to the direct simplicity of Rachelle Cruz’ opening line (“God loves you on your knees.”) to “How to Pray.” There are also less condemnatory, more hopeful expressions of faith, like Mia Ayumi Malhotra’s “Psalm” which lends its opening lines to the title of the section: “I will unlatch the lock / of these lips and praise, / press them to the crack / of light as it widens / in the jamb.” This limited selection of excerpts does not suffice, but it does offer an introduction to the broad expanse of Asian American poetry dealing with – as the collection’s title states – spirituality and faith. These are honest and evocative poems by admirable poets. That honesty requires that they not always be upbeat or easy. But they are necessary and appreciated. As Lee and Leah wrote in the book’s introduction, “It is always the right time for faith and the spirit. It is always the right time for poetry ... Poetry endures. Our faiths and spirits endure too. [We hope] that you receive these poems as artifacts to be explored, contemplated, and savored as gifts.” Make it so. ...‘Masks’ cont’d from pg 6 At the beginning of June, Fresno County had 35 deaths. And, Fresno County has 1 million residents. COVID-19 doesn’t sound too bad when you think of it that way, eh, math major? 0.0035% mortality rate. But, the problem is that that’s the wrong way to look at it. Here’s a better way: take the total deaths (35) and divide it by the total number of documented, confirmed COVID-19 cases in Fresno County, which happens to be 1,743 (by the time you read this, this number is likely to have already gone up). So, then, the death rate is 2%, right? Still, that’s not too horrific, I suppose. But we are missing something here. Of the 1,743 total confirmed cases, we know that 542 fully recovered, a 31% recovery rate. But what about the other 1,166? These are the cases that are ‘still active’ with no confirmed outcomes yet (they haven’t recovered, and they haven’t died to date). In a worst-case scenario, all of these confirmed 1,166 succumb to COVID-19. That would be a total death count of 1,201 (assuming no more confirmed cases or additional deaths). This would put the death rate at 69% - the worst-case scenario. Now, of course, this is unlikely, thank God - and hopefully, all of the current 1,166 active cases recover soon. This would be our best-case scenario, 2%. But, just as it is unlikely for all 1,166 to die by COVID-19, it is also unlikely they will all recover - right? Looking at past European data, which are weeks ahead of us in terms of infection onset, we see in France a death rate between 15-20% (depending on the data source). And so let’s estimate that 20% of Fresno’s active 1,166 unfortunately die. That would be 234 more deceased, for a total of 269 dead. And that would then put the death rate at 15% (assuming no more confirmed cases or additional deaths) in Fresno County. So, forget about a 2% COVID-19 death rate - the exact number will be much higher when the dust settles, sadly. Now, do you see why it’s crucial for you to wear a face mask? At the beginning of June across the U.S., we’ve had 104,383 COVID-19 deaths. And, according to some sources, we have had about 600,000 recovered COVID-19 survivors. We have 1,790,191 in total cases. This means we have about 1,085,808 active, open cases with no outcomes yet. And if we estimate a 15% mortality (again, since we’ve seen this average death rate in other countries that had their onset of infection weeks ahead of us) of these inconclusive cases, that would be about 162,872 additional deaths (assuming no more confirmed cases or additional deaths) - a total of 267,255 deaths - again, about a 15% mortality rate - not the low 5.8% figure that anti-maskers like to point to (and they even say that that number

is artificially inflated! Well, tell that to those grieving who suddenly saw their seemingly healthy loved ones become deathly ill and die within just a few days or weeks!) Dr. Duc C. Vong, a passionate and popular medical educator who teaches COVID-19 science in a YouTube series, doesn’t sugarcoat it: “You have to know the outcomes to understand the death rate…The correct death rate - the actual death rate if you come down with COVID-19 - the actual death rate is between 18-24%.” Vong started his YouTube talks for his patients with multiple comorbidities, which would lead to adverse COVID-19 outcomes, aka death. In no time, Dr. Vong’s ‘classroom’ and his unique style has become a YouTube favorite. Forget about a ‘Fake Plandemic’ conspiracy - the numbers are serious. So, the first lesson in Masks for Dummies: make sure that whatever kind of mask you have, that it covers up 1) your nose and 2) your mouth, pressed against your face so that there are no air gaps around your cheeks. The idea is for every breath to come in and out of your mask - NOT through your nose sticking out above your mask or by your mouth scooping up air from the opening below your mask. Find a mask that feels comfortable, breathable, and that does these two things above. Anything is better than nothing. Let’s take bandanas as an example - if worn tightly, the nose and mouth are covered well, which is good. But, unless the bottom portion of the bandana is tied against your face or somehow tucked into your shirt, there will be a huge air gap below the chin. The gap means your bandana-mask won’t capture all of your inhaling and exhaling. Your breaths will come from below and from the sides instead of through your mask - which is supposed to act as your air filter against breathing coronavirus in and out. The trick might be first to put on any mediocre face mask that at least covers your mouth and your chin and then cover that with the bandana. Doing this will give you better coverage for both your nose and mouth. Thinking outside the box like this and using whatever you have to protect yourself, your family, and your community is critical during this pandemic. To slow the spread of COVID-19 - and to protect yourself - you need to wear a mask that fully covers your nostrils and mouth. It’s important because if you don’t wear it right - like an unclipped seatbelt, what’s the point of even wearing it at all? If your nose and mouth aren’t covered, you’re doing it wrong. Simple as that. Masks for Dummies can be a little hard, but with a bit of practice, you’ll get it - guaranteed. Tune in next month when I’ll talk about the best kinds of masks, what they’re made of and how you can make your own. Stay safe out there... | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

OPINION

What the World Needs Now is

PRIDE, SWEET PRIDE By Dave Fountinelle | dave@fresnoflyer.com

M

y first real-life Pride celebration experience took place 12 years ago. It was 2008 and my ex and I planned a weekend trip to see the famous parade and celebration for ourselves. I have so many random, incredible memories from that weekend. I’m not sure what exactly I was expecting, but it exceeded all of it. The people, the energy, the colors, the freedom. What I felt the most the entire time was that everyone there was being exactly who they wanted to be. There were no labels at all. Sexuality, gender, race, age... the only thing that mattered was being there and being yourself. Freedom is such a powerful, beautiful, essential thing. That weekend, and what I took from it, has been on my mind often over the past few months. When the COVID-19 pandemic began escalating in February, it quickly became apparent that Pride was going to be very different this year. With the restrictions on social gatherings and closure of bars, clubs, and venues - what was Pride without the celebration? Without the parades, the dancing, the outfits, the people? I couldn›t imagine trying to capture the energy, the freedom, of an all-night, off the hook street disco in a Zoom meeting. And then George Floyd was killed by Derek Chauvin and two other Minneapolis police officers. At the same time, a 4th officer stood guard next to them, preventing anyone from interfering and doing nothing to stop the brutality. This tragedy came on the heels of both the video recorded stalking and killing of Ahmaud Arbery and the wrong address, no-knock warrant raid by Louisville police resulting in Breonna Taylor’s death. Taylor was shot eight times in her bed, and her boyfriend was arrested and charged for using a lawful firearm to defend themselves. An already weary country has had enough. Outraged citizens took to the streets to protest yet another killing of an

unarmed black man by the police. Minneapolis PD met them in full riot gear. Without provocation, the police began throwing tear gas and flash-bang grenades into the crowd and opening fire with rubber bullets and pepper spray. The city erupted in chaos, violence, and destruction. In the following days, protests have sprung up all across the country and throughout the world. Most of the demonstrations have been peaceful, but riots and looting have been a problem

There is so much understandable anger, so much frustration, pain, and sadness. Many people are wondering how this can still be happening in our society, 60 years after the Civil Rights movement began. The protest movement is growing just as we enter June, and Pride begins. Images of the demonstrations are reminiscent of the 1960s Civil Rights protests, and a timely reminder of the June 28th, 1969 protests - the revolution Pride

in many places. Simultaneously, the police response in many cities has been brutally excessive and seems almost exclusively directed towards peaceful protests rather than those destroying property and breaking the law. The unfolding events have had a polarizing effect on the country, reflected nowhere more clearly than on social media.

continues to honor. The Stonewall Riots began with a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York›s Greenwich Village. The attack sparked a riot between the police, bar patrons, and residents. What followed was six days of protests and violent clashes with police. The demonstrations were the spark that ignited the gay rights movement, propelling it onto the national

stage and marking a significant positive change in public opinion. They are also a solemn reminder that equality is rarely gained without a fight. Yet, when I think of Pride today, I think of how included and accepted, I have always felt as a hetero man. I think about the energy and the positivity and the freedom to be who you are. I admire those who fought and endured the hate and the discrimination and the progress they’ve made. I empathize with those who are still fighting just to have equality. Just as I honor and respect POC who have fought and are still struggling to end systemic racism 52 years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. History shows us that the fight for equality in this country is both difficult and costly. It costs us our peace, it costs us our morality, and it costs lives. But Pride has always shown me that it’s a fight that the good guys are still winning. That every victory is a win for all of us, who believe we can be better, and that the party is so much more fun when everyone’s invited. When I think of Pride, I think of the LGBTQ movement at its absolute strongest. Because, to me, nothing tells your adversaries they failed like throwing a month-long party right in their faces and having the absolute time of your life. We need that right now. We need it badly. History has taught us that – unfortunately – things are probably going to get worse in the days and weeks ahead. It also, unfortunately, tells us that what little meaningful progress comes from all this will come at a terrible cost. But if we can still find our shine when the dust settles, and if we can emerge from this dark chapter and throw a huge, over the top party right in the faces of everyone who stands on the side of hate, ignorance, and living in the past. If we can come together stronger and more united against the forces of division, it’ll be worth it. And that’s the party I can’t wait to attend.

l When choosing snacks for at home or on the go, select only whole foods. This means nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, eggs, yogurt, anything in its natural state, and hasn’t had any processing. Take a few minutes to put nuts or celery sticks or bell pepper wedges into a small resealable bag, so you have something easy to grab and go. l Stop buying foods that aren’t healthy choices. If you have foods that you can’t stop eating once you start(and we all do), don’t buy them anymore! What’s your temptation? Spicy tortilla chips, donuts, salty pretzels, ice cream? Whatever it is, do yourself a favor and take it off of your shopping list. l Get rid of phrases such as ‘not now,’ ‘I have too much to do,’ ‘I’m tired,’ ‘this is hard,’ and ‘I can’t’ when you’re focusing on a healthy habit. Give yourself the opposite message: ‘now is good,’ ‘I can take time for this,’ ‘this will give me energy,’ ‘I can handle this,’ ‘I can.’ Add in, ‘this is for me, and I’m worth it.’

Realize and acknowledge that you are creating healthy success for yourself through these tiny habits. Changes are happening even if you can’t always see or feel them. Don’t let your doubts about what you’re accomplishing get in the way of continuing with the habits. You gain success every single time you choose water instead of a frappuccino or walk for 10 minutes. Over time these simple actions will become your actual habits and won’t take a lot of effort to maintain. They’ll just become a part of your everyday life. --Nadine is a Wellness Coach for women who want to break long-standing eating and inactive habits.
