Letter from the Head of School Dear Friends, That our school could emerge from such a difficult and challenging year with continued momentum and acceleration in the right areas is a testament to you – our parents, alumni, trustees, colleagues, alumni parents, grandparents, and friends. On behalf of the entire Friends Academy community, I am profoundly grateful to you all. When we needed you, you were there. With your support, we found so many creative ways to keep our connections strong and our community together. You rose beyond the occasion and demonstrated your appreciation of our incredible faculty and staff when you supported our critical and the most successful fundraising initiatives yet – from the Annual Fund to the Virtual Auction to the largest Giving Day ever. Your gifts support our daily operations, endowment and scholarship funds, and enhance the learning experience of every child here. The purpose of the Annual Report is to reflect upon the past year and recognize all who gave their time, talent, and financial support to the school. Your gifts are vital to Friends Academy’s strength, and I am grateful that you made the school one of your philanthropic priorities in 2020-21. This September, with renewed momentum and purpose, we returned to school prepared to restore as much of our normalcy as possible for every member of our community. Our promise remains the same – to deliver to every child an exceptional and unmatched Friends Academy education. Our goals, expectations, and standards remain at the highest level and I am confident that you will continue to support Friends Academy with the same passion and energy during this 2021-22 school year. I thank each and every donor and volunteer for your ongoing commitment to Friends and feel privileged to serve such a devoted and generous community. Sincerely,
Andrea Kelly Head of School

Athletic Achievements Despite the challenges and uncertainties that faced student-athletes and coaches across the region this school year, Friends Academy’s athletics program exemplified the determination, work ethic, and teamwork necessary to have one of the most successful years in recent memory. The spring teams were no exception, putting up incredible and record-breaking performances. BOYS GOLF After a highly successful regular season, the Varsity Boys Golf Team finished as the No. 2 team in Nassau County! Brothers Sean and Zach Shallat finished as the second and third individual golfers in the county, respectively. GIRLS GOLF The Varsity Girls Golf Team finished the regular season as conference champions, advancing to the Nassau County Tournament. Senior co-captain Mary Droesch, who had been named one of Newsday’s Top 25 Girls Golfers on Long Island, moved on to the second day of competition at the County Tournament, finishing 20th overall. BOYS LACROSSE The Varsity Boys Lacrosse Team captured their first Long Island Championship title in program history on June 19, following an exciting double-overtime and hard-fought 15-14 win over Port Jefferson Overcoming a 14-10 deficit, senior midfielder Albert Paniccia, who was selected as one of four recipients of the annual James C. Metzger Leadership Award for Nassau County, scored five goals in the championship match. In post-season play, the Quakers clinched their second county title after their 13-7 win over Oyster Bay. GIRLS LACROSSE One word that best describes the 2021 girls lacrosse team is grit. With only an 18 man roster and
few subs, this team put the Friends Academy girls lacrosse team on the map. The Quakers moved up from conference 3 to 2 for this season, competing against some of the best girls lacrosse teams in Nassau county. The team went 9-6 overall and 7-6 in conference, finishing in 4th place in conference 2 to advance to the Nassau County Class B playoffs. Friends beat Division 12-5 in the first round of playoffs which advanced them to play Wantagh in the quarter finals, where the season unfortunately came to an end. TRACK AND FIELD The Boys and Girls Varsity Track and Field Teams both earned Division IVB Championships, picking up 10 titles in relays and individual events, before both teams finished second at the Nassau County Class County A Championships. In addition, at the Sectional championships (known as State Qualifier in previous years) four individual athletes in six events and one relay team won championships in their events, with many teammates posting personal bests in jumping, throwing, and running. BOYS TENNIS Congratulations to the boys Varsity tennis team. With the shortened season of only 7 official matches, and the combined effort of all players contributing, we were able to compete and do well. We had a great season going undefeated until our last match against GNS. In the team county tournament, we beat Jericho 5-2, a conference 1 team, before losing a very close match to Great Neck north 4-3, also a conference 1 team. Our record overall was 9-1 including our 3 pre-season matches. Everyone learned valuable lessons on sportsmanship and tennis strategies, which should enable the team to be extremely competitive in the 2021-22 season. GIRLS SOFTBALL Congratulations to the entire Girls Softball program. The girls fought hard and went 3-5 in their conference. Next school year this will move to play a Varsity schedule. BOYS BASEBALL The Boys baseball team had a great season. Congratulations to all that participated. With a winning record the baseball team did a wonderful job in their conference. ANNUAL REPORT 5

Academics In a year that was anything but normal, Friends Academy faculty continued to deliver a robust educational experience that remained grounded in our Quaker mission. Indeed it was our Quaker testimonies that bridged the pandemic-induced physical and emotional distances and made it possible for students to continue meeting high standards of learning. In Lower School, all students from PlayGroup through 4th Grade returned to campus, five days a week on the first day of school last year. Their year was capped by our annual Learning Celebrations, along with special and educational events throughout the year, such as our two-week Peace Week Celebration and Lunar New Year. During Peace Week, students connected with special speakers in both micro and macro communities. Our Kindergarten through Fourth Grade students “met” with Ms. Helen Turner, Director of Education at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove. Ms. Turner’s queries and developmentally appropriate literature encouraged us to explore inclusion and the importance of celebrating our differences. Our students were also able to join Pastor Kim, whose service-learning opportunity – a basic necessities drive for migrant/refugee children – united all three divisions. Pastor Kim, based here on Long Island, is an immigrant advocate, and we felt fortunate to learn more about her experience of being in service to others. Changemakers Chander Payne and Ahmed Badr Zoomed across grade levels to engage with our students about how they have taken action to be in service to others. Chander Payne’s realization of creating urban farms to address urban foodinsecurity demonstrated how being a changemaker can come out of one’s passion to actively problemsolve around immediate issues that hit home. Ahmed Badr’s passion and commitment to creative expression that focuses on migration, identity and self-expression truly embodied this year’s Peace Week theme: Voice.
In Middle School students delved into a variety of academic projects. In 5th grade, students examined oral histories by reading Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woodson, and simultaneously interviewed a close family member for their Family History Project in Social Studies. Sixth graders prepared diligently for their Science Share Experiment. Seventh graders merged science and literacy studies in a storybook project. Our 8th graders dug into the concepts of voice and agency, and the responsibilities and opportunities that go hand-in-hand with these ideas. They explored these ideas across advisory activities, such as a gallery walk to think about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life, influences, and choices, class reflections on American History movements, reflections on the courage offered in To Kill a Mockingbird, and in a final advisory activity, researched someone they admire who uses their voice to make a positive impact on the world. Our Upper School academic program responded to the challenges of managing distancing protocols while still working to remain engaged with the real world to retain the essential connections needed for relationship-based learning. Students in the Speech and Debate English elective practiced an “interview skills workshop” where students were given two local job advertisements to choose between and to apply for, and wrote a focused resume and cover letter, in preparation for a ‘real’ interview (Mrs. Kelly and Mr. Schoeffel served as their gauntlets); the Entrepreneurship elective involved students brainstorming solutions to local and regional businesses affected by COVID, giving group presentation pitches on problem-solving with immediate business impact; and AP Bio students worked on a COVID-19 portfolio project, where students wrote updates on their topic through class blog posts, which are published on an AP Bio edublog site, eventually sharing their discoveries with the community to help educate on COVID topics. While the high school opened fully in-person, on-campus, every day in February (even with new
ANNUAL REPORT 7
modular buildings for almost all classes), clubs and activities had to construct new virtual platforms given the challenges of managing in-person meetings for different numbers of students in spaces. Student Faculty Board leaders constructed an entirely virtual platform with links for virtual club meetings during community time each week, and students envisioned new options: Hearing All Voices (a cross-divisional forum to meet wellness needs and promote student voice); Art for Activism (a working group looking at social justice oriented pieces of art as they may impact community); Choose your Charity (sponsored the FreeRice competition with the Whole Food program to combat world hunger); Poetry Society (poetry competitions and discussions of verse); and Political and Civic Discourse (a non-partisan club to empower people to re-evaluate or develop their beliefs on civic and political questions through civil discussion) among them. All of these offerings and the frame were powered by student leadership and student voices.

Arts Last year as the Arts Department carefully, and tentatively, returned to campus, they spent months understanding safety regulations and outfitting the campus to keep students and adults safe. They also began exploring how to give students creative outlets after school so that they could engage in the activities they love, and be with their friends, in person, working together. As a result, Friends Academy broke new barriers of presentation and technology. One of the first things they did was create a series of after-school classes in the arts for our Middle School students. Students had the opportunity to engage in classes in Dance, Music, and Visual Art. Middle School students eagerly participated in the variety of classes we offered, which led the way for parallel offerings in the Upper School, including a medley of Mamma Mia, led by Music Department Convener Laura Backley and Dance teacher Yoaldri Messina, which was filmed as an elaborate music video. The first major after-school Arts undertaking was a project entitled, “Exploration of Battlefield.” Wearing masks, six students stepped into the Theater and worked with Director of Arts Tracey Foster and Choreographer Kimo Kepano to explore this text. Battlefield is an excerpt from a section of Peter Brooks’ nine-hour play, The Mahabarahta, which is based on the ancient Sanskrit Epic Poem of the same name. The Original Mahabarahta is one of the world’s greatest texts and is part of a series of ancient texts that form the core traditions of Hinduism. Battlefield picks up after a great battle in which brother fought brother. It asks the question, “How do I lead after so much has been destroyed?” The cast explored the history of the ancient text and the culture from which it came. The play was also a vehicle for each studentactor’s thoughts and ideas after researching the text, as each examined how to find a way forward in the midst of isolation, tragedy, and upheaval. Concurrently, Middle and Upper School
Theater teacher Andrew Geha, confronted by the challenges of the pandemic, decided to film the four-episode web show, “Catastrophe Theory,” instead of staging a play. The challenge of portraying the actors without masks and seemingly right next to each other drove Geha, the production staff, and the students to strategize filming in new and innovative ways. With an original script written by Geha and workshopped with a writing team of six Upper School students, the four-part series followed the zigzag paths of four central characters, whose lives seemed to intertwine in mysterious and cryptic ways. "In physics and engineering, catastrophe theory explores how systems break down. How a natural state (like a mountainside) can turn into a disaster (like a landslide). There are certain variables at play, and a change in just one variable can shift everything towards it's breaking point," explained Geha, who was inspired by the events of the Summer of 2020. The production, which involved 21 student performers, four faculty performers, and six students and adults behind the scenes, filmed in various locations around campus, as the student crew managed through COVID interruptions, transforming classrooms and conference rooms into bedrooms and laboratories. "COVID made it a lot harder because we could only film one person at a time. Anytime you see two or more people talking to one another in an episode, it’s fake. It’s a composite shot of two or three separate takes," said Geha. With all four episodes now available to stream, Geha is excited by the promise of a new way of storytelling for the future. "This project was a wonderful and wonderfully challenging learning experience for everyone. It opened up different ways of thinking and storytelling for us. Will we do this again? Who knows. But the reaction was amazing. We're really proud of the work we've done and how that work has gotten to reach a wider audience than before. Catastrophe Theory is streaming now on YouTube! Tune in!!"

Retirements MARK ALBER - 20 YEARS Mark joined the FA community in 2001 in our Upper School as a science teacher, department head, and faculty advisor to the Independent Film Club. A dedicated Chemistry teacher, Mark also taught video editing and science project classes. A long-standing member of the senior class advising team, Mark’s calm nature and sense of humor made him a student favorite every year. Outside of his teaching, Mark was an advisor to the Science Olympiads program, a member of the faculty Voice and Head’s Advisory Committees. A supportive colleague to those in the Upper School, Mark could always be counted on to pitch-in when needed, to film, to build a maze, or supervise an advisory service project. GAIL LUCIDI Gail served as the administrative assistant in Lower School, retiring in December of last year after 14 years at Friends Academy. Gail was always a friendly face greeting our youngest students, and was a warm, compassionate, kind, supportive colleague to all. JOAN PHILLIPS - 10 YEARS Joan arrived at Friends in 2011 an experienced educator already having taught 38 years in a local public school. A consummate professional, Joan immersed herself completely in the community during her time at Friends. So much so that after her first year one of her colleagues shared “it is hard to believe this was her first year at Friends Academy!” A collaborative colleague, Joan could be counted on to teach an extra course, step in as a class dean, all the while delivering top notch lessons to her students.
14 ANNUAL REPORT
Always an early bird, Joan could often be found down in the math wing at 7:30 am getting organized for the day or meeting with students for extra help. Outside of the classroom, Joan worked on the TLC, the Sustainability committee, and helped ban the use of plastics on the campus. Joan was instrumental in the school installing bottle fill stations. Joan worked tirelessly during the summer (when she was technically off!) in the FA community garden. Joan is a kind, compassionate, wise advisor beloved by her advisees and students for her honesty, and sense of humor. CAROL VAN AUKEN - 29 YEARS Carol began her tenure at Friends Academy as a part-time assistant librarian in the fall of 1992 and became a full time librarian in 2000. Over the years, Carol, a dedicated library professional, grew to take on a wide range of library responsibilities. Libraries and how they function in school settings have evolved and Carol was no stranger to those changes. Yet she adapted and grew, expanding her professional skills and capabilities by taking advantage of professional development opportunities. Carol stayed current on new technology and digital resources, worked on cataloging projects and every August, worked tirelessly with her library colleagues on textbook distribution! A dedicated Upper School advisor, Carol is also a favorite among our students. Carol is insightful, nurturing, and caring. Her calm demeanor lets the students know that she supports them while still holding them to the highest standards. In recent years, Carol served as an advisor to members of the senior class particularly enjoying the annual overnight trip in the fall.
Faculty Highlights Faculty Honors FRED SMITH MEMORIAL COACHING AWARD
The Fred Smith Memorial Coaching Award was established in the spring of 2013 through the generosity of alumni and former players to honor the achievements and work of beloved coach and mentor, Fred Smith, who touched the lives of many students as a faculty member from 1959-1967. This award recognizes coaching excellence, guidance, and leadership as was Coach Smith’s way. The award provides for annual recognition of a deserving varsity coach in boys or girls sports by paying all or part of the cost to attend coaching seminars, conferences, and similar events designed to promote and enhance coaching skills. We are presenting the Fred Smith Memorial Coaching Award to a very deserving coach, Rachel Dooley.

Pandemic Playbook Investing in Community This past year was challenging for us all. As fiduciaries of the school, the Board committed to bringing our students back on campus full time in a safe and socially distanced environment. Due to the size of our classrooms and student body, this was no easy task. Our Trustees spared no expense in this endeavor and we are very grateful to all who supported our efforts. A special thanks to our faculty and staff whose dedication and perseverance helped navigate us through the storm of the 2020-2021 school year. The Board set the school budget a year in advance and no one could have predicted or prepared for the additional costs incurred by the pandemic. This has taken a huge financial investment. To date we have spent over $1.5M to continue our efforts to offer the high quality education Friends Academy. Some examples of the investments that were made to ensure our students continued to thrive are: •
The purchase of PPE equipment and materials
•
Increased custodial staff and disinfectant supplies
•
Updated technology to enhance virtual learning
•
The construction of an academic village of modular classrooms
•
Additional personnel to maintain classroom coverage every day
•
Increased financial aid for both tuition and non-tuition expenses to keep the community whole.
•
Additional nursing staff to coordinate saliva pool testing on our campus community on a weekly basis
•
Floor decals and informational signage about health and safety guidelines
•
Fully reimagined lunch delivery and packaging

Annual Fund The Friends Academy Annual Fund is the most significant yearly fundraiser for the school. The Annual Fund touches the lives of each and every one of our students and positively affects them in many profound ways. Unrestricted gifts to Friends through our Annual Fund are the foundation of our giving program.
Gifts by Parents The support our parents provide to Friends is a key difference maker in defining the financial health of our community. ANNUAL REPORT 47
PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION Founded in 1876 by Gideon Frost for “the children of Friends and those similarly sentimented,” Friends Academy is a Quaker, coeducational, independent, college preparatory school serving students from age three through the twelfth grade. The school’s philosophy is based on the Quaker principles of integrity, simplicity, patience, moderation, peaceful resolution of conflict, and a belief that the silence and simple ministry of the “gathered meeting” brings the presence of God into the midst of busy lives. Friends Academy is committed to developing a diverse community whose members value excellence in learning and growth in knowledge and skill, a genuine commitment to service and ethical action, and a realization that every life is to be explored, celebrated, and enjoyed in the spirit of the Religious Society of Friends. Friends Academy admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities available to students at the school. Friends does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, financial assistance program, athletics, and other school-administered programs.
