THE
TENDERFOOT CAMP
provides recreational activities specially attuned
to the interests of three- to six-year-old children. The program focuses on social development, independence, the development of new
friendships and the strengthening of self-esteem. As
children grow, they are encouraged by our supportive staff to broaden their experiences and see what the world around them has to offer. Emphasis is placed on cooperation rather than competition. Children are placed in coeducational groups by age. We offer: • A balance of structured activities and free play opportunities • Experienced early childhood educators • Cooperative rather than competitive activities • A low staff/child ratio
Activities SWIMMING Our well-trained swim staff supports our young campers through the early stages of swim instruction. Water safety and skill development are emphasized in our pool built to accommodate the youngest children. Small group instruction, based on campers’ needs and skill level, occurs every morning and a free swim period gives each child a chance to cool off every afternoon.
MUSIC AND DRAMA Our music and drama counselors engage our campers in singing and acting out familiar songs and stories, as well as new ones. Our campers play simple instruments, use creative movement and role playing as ways of creative expression.
ARTS AND CRAFTS Campers can experience all types of media from paint to clay to glitter to recyclables. We invite them to use their imaginations to express themselves through art.
NATURE Children use all five senses to explore the trees, insects, rocks, and the pond on our beautiful 18-acre Lower School campus. Discover nature through hands-on exploration.
COMPUTERS Our four- to six-year-olds enjoy using our new technology as they are exposed to an assortment of fun, exciting early childhood software. The air-conditioned lab is a real plus on a hot summer day.
SPORTS AND GAMES With an emphasis on fitness and cooperation, campers play numerous group games such as “Blob Tag” and “Snakes in the Grass,” as well as develop soccer fundamentals. A counselor skilled in working with young children gets everyone involved in the fun.
A TYPICAL DAY 8:30-9:00
9:00-11:30
11:30-12:30 12:30-3:00
DROP-OFF Greeted at their cars by a welcoming counselor, campers are escorted to their camp rooms where they deposit belongings, have a free choice time, and get ready for a busy day with their team of counselors.
MORNING ACTIVITIES Campers run, laugh, swim and learn together with their group, through five morning periods, including Snack Time. The variety is exciting and stimulating. Here are some examples: do the Superman float for the first time at Instructional Swim; put the final touches on a 4th of July hat at Arts and Crafts; create original sounds with their own camp band at Music; and lay flat and still by the pond to fully observe the goldfish swimming lazily about during Nature time.
LUNCH A time to eat and refresh with counselors and friends.
AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES A balance between structured activities and “down” time; catch up with a playmate on the playground, splash and cool off in the pool at free swim, interpret the role of the spider in “The Spider and the Crab” in Drama. The afternoon is characterized by flexibility and individualization, depending on the age and pace of campers. Those campers that need a little catnap are given the chance to rest. Six-year-olds are off to their WOW! activity.
3:00-3:20
PICK-UP Counselors assist their campers at pick-up at the end of the camp day.
3:30-5:30
AFTER CAMP Extended care available; snack and swim included.

DIRECTOR AND STAFF Deb Will begins her eighth year as Director of the Tenderfoot Camp, after serving three years as Assistant Director. Currently Lower School Reading Specialist at Friends’ Central, Deb brings to the job over twenty-two years of experience teaching young children. A former Assistant Director at Trailblazer Camp, Dave Thomas begins his sixth year assisting Deb Will at Tenderfoot Camp. Dave has been the fifth grade science teacher at Friends’ Central for 23 years. Special counselors at the Tenderfoot Camp include a professional music educator, a drama specialist, a computer instructor, art and nature counselors, certified lifeguards, and a full-time registered nurse.
THEME WEEKS Tenderfoot Campers anticipate the excitement of our weekly thematic activities. Our counselors develop their curriculum around a particular theme that culminates on Friday at an all-camp assembly. A few of these themes have included: Friendship Week, where making new friends is emphasized and having a Teddy Bear Parade is the highlight; Animal Week, where campers can pet exotic and familiar animals at the petting zoo and masks of tigers and mice abound; and International Week, a time for each camp group to focus and learn about one country, making a native costume in Arts and Crafts, singing related songs in Music, and performing a skit at the end of the week representing all that’s been learned. Learning and fun go hand-in-hand in every Theme Week. The weekly camp newsletter, The Hoot, keeps parents informed about all the latest camp news and thematic events.
