THE MAGAZINE OF FRIENDS’ CENTRAL SCHOOL 5:1 Fall 2013

Dear Friends,

F

riends’ Central is a School that is humble, modest, and devoted to simplicity. At the same time, during the entire 2012–2013 school year, I was awed by the accomplishments of our students, the excellence of our faculty, and the kindness of our community.

Commencement and Reunion, the focus of this issue of Quaker Works Magazine, are reflections of the truly extraordinary community here at Friends’ Central School. A recurring theme I hear from alumni/ae, particularly at Reunion, is how much their Friends’ Central education meant to them, and that they carry with them the lessons they learned and the relationships they formed during their time here. Student Commencement speaker, Will Pedrick ’13, knows that he will carry Friends’ Central with him no matter where he goes, “Friends’ Central doesn’t end when you graduate. Whatever made me walk out of the Main Building when I was thirteen and tell my Mom ‘this is where I want to go for high school’ is still a part of me… and will be with me next year.” Our students also understand that with their education comes a certain responsibility. Fellow student Commencement speaker, Beah Jacobson ’13, said in her speech, “As recipients of a Friends’ Central education, we have a responsibility to go make the world better… to build communities with shared understandings of what better means… to define our worlds.”

Like the Classes that preceded them, students in the Class of 2013 are well on their way to making the world better. They were admitted to 162 colleges and universities, 89% were accepted to one of their top three choices, and 24% were accepted to U.S. News & World Report “Top 10 Schools” and Ivy League Schools. In this Class, there is a U.S. Presidential Scholar, twenty-one students who were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program, and six members of a National award-winning app challenge team. The Class of 2013 received over $2 million in merit scholarships, an average of $19,000 per student, and two students received full merit scholarships. The successes of the Class of 2013, as well as the exciting events that took place at Reunion 2013 and the moving testimonials in this issue of Quaker Works, remind us of the enduring impact of a Friends’ Central education. Our current students are blazing their own paths, filled with promise and armed with the tools they’ll need to invent our future. Please spend some time with this issue of Quaker Works and follow our School and alumni/ae news on the website, social media, and in future magazines. I am certain you will agree that this is a remarkable school!

Sincerely,

Craig N. Sellers, Head of School

Welcoming Grandparents and Special Friends to the Lower School On Thursday, May 9, 2013, grandparents and special friends went back to school! During 2013 Grandparents’/Special Friends’ Day, 3rd and 4th graders proudly showed off their classrooms and introduced their teachers and classmates at the Lower School to their grandparents and special friends. This event was a great opportunity for teachers to meet some special people in the lives of their students and for students to show their guests the many wonderful things they do each day at Friends’ Central Lower School!

Phoenix Game Day The Middle School came together on Thursday, June 6, 2013 to compete in the annual Phoenix Game Day. Each grade was divided into four different teams— blue, yellow, red, and green—to compete in a variety of activities, including Frisbee Toss, Dizzy Bat Race, Water Balloon Toss, and much more! This year, the yellow team was victorious for the second consecutive year. Fun fact: the yellow team has had some pretty good luck in this exciting day of fun competitions; they have won Phoenix Game Day five of the last seven years.

CELEBRATING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS Upper School Academic Awards On Friday, May 17, Friends’ Central held its annual Upper School Academic Awards Assembly, at which students were recognized for their outstanding efforts in academics, arts, athletics, service, and citizenship. (Top right) One highlight of the assembly was the induction of 21 members of the Class of 2013 into the Cum Laude Society, in recognition of their distinguished academic record during their Friends’ Central careers. Class of 2013 inductees into the Friends’ Central School Cum Laude Society are: (standing) Anneka Allman, Marina Golan-Vilella, Beah Jacobson, Patrick Zerbe, Adam Bolotsky, Andrew Hitt, Ben Lichtman, Aqeel Phillips, Jonathan Adler, Will Pedrick, Dan Stadtmauer, (seated) Heather Witzel-Lakin, Marina Simon, Anna LynnPalevsky, Will Borchert, Gabby Owens, Tess Wei, Sydney Stotter, Rachel Weiss, Andrew Nadkarni, and Michael Furey. (Below) Head of School Craig Sellers presented the 2013 Executive Award, which is given to a boy and a girl in the Upper School, who, by vote of students and faculty, represent the highest qualifications of school citizenship, to Suzy Bernstein and Andrew Nadkarni.

Senior Beah Jacobson Named U.S. Presidential Scholar! Beah Jacobson ’13 (right) is one of 141 outstanding American high school seniors who were named 2013 U.S. Presidential Scholars for demonstrating outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service, and contribution to school and community. “I feel so honored to have been selected as a Presidential Scholar,” Beah says. “I’m also so grateful to all my teachers and classmates at Friends’ Central, who have challenged me to think creatively and supported me for so many years. Since Pre-K, when I started at FCS, I’ve had teachers who are passionate, fun, and have taught me to love learning, and I can’t thank them enough.” The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, appointed by President Obama, selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations, and transcripts, evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. Of the three million high school graduates, more than 3,800 candidates qualified for the 2013 awards, determined by outstanding

performance on the College Board SAT and ACT exams and through nominations made by Chief State School Officers or the National YoungArts Foundation. Since 1983, each Presidential Scholar has been offered the opportunity to name his or her most influential teacher. The teacher chosen for recognition by Jacobson was Carl Bradley. In one of her application essays for the Presidential Scholarship, Beah wrote, “Throughout my time in Orchestra and Jazz Band, Mr. Bradley has asked me to push past the limits of my abilities. He encourages me to experiment, to try things I haven’t practiced, to make mistakes and to learn from them. As much as his classes are about music theory or technical skill development, they are also about exploration.” Each distinguished teacher is honored with a personal letter from the Secretary of Education.

Campus Log ATHLETICS

A SPECTACULAR SPRING: 5 FSL Championships! It was a record-setting finish for the five Phoenix teams who took home league Championships this spring! The Varsity Golf, Softball, Baseball, Girls’ Lacrosse, and Boys’ Tennis Teams each captured an FSL title.

For the second consecutive year, the VARSITY SOFTBALL Team entered the playoffs as the underdog, and for the second straight year, the Phoenix defied the odds once again and captured the Friends Schools League crown in a thrilling, back-andforth 7-6 victory over GFS on Saturday, May 18. Key contributors for the Phoenix included seniors Marina Golan-Vilella (double) and Suzy Bernstein (RBI, run scored) and sophomore Saoirse Hahn (RBI). The Senior Class of Suzy Bernstein, Briana Folwell, Marina Golan-Vilella, and Rachel Weiss provided leadership in various ways on and off the field, playing a key role in the Phoenix’s back-to-back championships. The VARSITY BOYS’ TENNIS Team defeated Shipley 4-1 in the Friends Schools League Championship match to cap their 5th straight FSL title and their 11th title since 2001. The Phoenix finished the 2013 season with a record of 15-1 and an FSL record of 9-0. FCS boasts an impressive league record of 45-0 since 2009 and 104-3 since 2001! The first doubles tandem of senior Thomas Fakarzadeh and junior Gregory Lynn registered the first point for the Phoenix in the championship match. Junior Max Ginsberg (second singles) and senior Raj Singh (third singles) clinched the title with their second and third points. Senior Sam Silver (first singles) won his match and the celebration officially began.

The VARSITY GOLF Team captured the Friends Schools League Championship on Tuesday, May 14 at the Laurel Creek Golf Club in Moorestown, NJ. The Phoenix finished with a team score of 349, 51 strokes lower than second place finisher Westtown School. The Phoenix placed four golfers in the top 10. Freshman Peter Bradbeer finished in first place with a low score of 78. Junior Peter Dissinger finished 3rd with an 83, senior Jared Harris finished 6th with a 93, and senior Jonathan Adler placed 9th with a 95. This marks the first FSL title for the Phoenix since they won back-to-back championships in 2001 and 2002.

The VARSITY BASEBALL Team completed an undefeated Friends Schools League season by winning the FSL Championship in a 6-0 victory over visiting GFS on Saturday, May 18. Senior captain Aaron Ross threw a complete game no-hitter, his second no-hitter of the season against GFS. Junior Jerome Allen’s triple in the third inning put the Phoenix up 1-0 on the scoreboard, and the team never looked back. The squad’s three captains, Ross, junior Bryan Rubin, and junior Hayden Gruber, combined for 7-11 hitting in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th spots in the line-up. The Phoenix played excellent defense to maintain the no-hitter. FCS completed their first undefeated season in Friends League history since the league expanded to 10 regular season games 15 years ago.

JUNIOR LACROSSE player Emma Dahle received 1st Team All-America honors, and Dahle and Kate Forrest ‘14 received High School All-Academic honors for being players who, according to US Lacrosse, “exhibit exemplary lacrosse skills, good sportsmanship on the field and represent high standards of academic achievement in the classroom” and for “leaving a mark beyond the lacrosse field and the classroom by making significant contributions of service to the school and/or community.”

The VARSITY GIRLS’ LACROSSE Team captured its 4th consecutive FSL Championship with a 14-11 win over GFS on Friday, May 17. The Championship win over GFS allowed FCS to avenge their only regular season FSL loss and finish with an 8-1 league record. Seniors Ashley Tedesco, Maria Pizzini, Aubrey Faggen, Dara Holt, and Syndey Stotter were a part of four Championship Teams, each year of their Upper School careers at FCS! The Girls’ Lacrosse Team also finished second in the Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association (PAISAA) tournament.

SENIOR PROJECTS

Over 40 years ago, a group of students from the Class of 1968 came up with an idea that would change the landscape of Friends’ Central’s Senior Class experience. That idea was Senior Project.

Victoria Gillison

FCS Alumnus Don Fair ’68, referred to as the “Pioneer of Senior Project,” says that he and his classmates were exploring ways to make the most of their senior year. He explains, “Those of us in the senior class, especially those who had gotten into college early, were afraid of checking out. What could we do to keep our interest in school?” The Class of 1968 approached their teachers and suggested an internship program where they would take off one day a week and work in the “real world.” The faculty and administration loved the idea, and thus Senior Project was born. Now a coordinating producer at Fox News, Don isn’t sure what path his life would have taken without Senior Project. “If I hadn’t had that Senior Project, which allowed me to take one day off a week to work at KYW, I don’t know what I would’ve done. It gave me my first opportunity. Once I got into that door, I never left.”

This year’s 9th & 10th Grade Play, Almost, Maine, premiered on Wednesday and Friday evening, May 22 and 24, 2013. Almost, Maine is about a small town in New England, whose town tour guides lead you through 10 stories of love that occur on the only night when the northern lights are visible over the town. Though the original play was written by John Cariani, student directors, Michael Furey ’13 and Bianca LoGiurato ’13, both of whom participated in the program as 9th and 10th graders themselves, wrote in additional scenes making it a truly funny, quirky, and heartwarming play. The play was the exciting culmination of Michael and Bianca’s Senior Project.

SAVE THE DATE!

Today, because of the ideas and efforts of alumni/ae in the Class of 1968, Senior Project has become a 5-week capstone experience for Friends’ Central 12th graders, featuring a wide array of internships, community service opportunities, artistic projects, and so much more. The Class of 2013’s Senior Projects ranged from painting murals to volunteering at Saunders House, teaching in the Lower and Middle Schools, working as an auto mechanic, shadowing a neurologist or veterinarian, working at a farm and learning about sustainable agriculture, and writing a musical based on the music of Bruce Springsteen. Another exciting Senior Project was the creation of a video, which was used by the FCS Advancement Office in the School’s marketing efforts. The video was titled “The FC Shake,” and it received over 10,000 Scan this QR Code with YouTube views in less than your SmartPhone or 48 hours! visit youtube.com/ friendscentralschool to do the FC Shake!

THE ALUMNI/AE GATHERING THAT TYPICALLY TAKES PLACE ON THE WEDNESDAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING HAS BEEN CANCELED (SCHOOL IS CLOSED THAT DAY). IN PLACE OF THIS GATHERING, THERE WILL BE AN ALUMNI/AE OPEN HOUSE ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 2014 AT 4:00 PM. WE HOPE TO SEE LOTS OF FCS ALUMNI/ AE THERE TO RECONNECT!

Hopi Hoekstra Enlightens FCS Audiences about Evolution

Inside a packed Shallcross Hall on the City Avenue campus, Friends’ Central hosted the 2013 Distinguished Visiting Scientist Lecture, featuring Hopi Hoekstra, Harvard Professor of Zoology, Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, and Molecular Biology, on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Her exceptional teaching and speaking methods, including vibrant photos and relatable research material, Hoekstra’s lecture, “From Darwin to DNA,” created real excitement in the audience, whether one was interested in Darwin and evolution prior to attending or not.

some really great research questions, explaining how modern methods in gene analysis could be used to study the ways some specific behavioral traits are inherited. She combined a marvelous teaching ability with a great sense of genuine curiosity and eagerness to understand the real details of evolutionary processes. In her follow up discussions with core team members, students were able to ask more about research papers they had read as well as the bigger picture of choosing to pursue a path in research science. Hopi shared wonderful stories and offered our students great affirmation and encouragement as they thought about their own academic futures. FRIENDS’ CENTRAL SCHOOL

O

n Saturday, June 8, 105 members of the Class of 2013 became the 168th class to graduate from Friends’ Central School. They were celebrated by Upper School Principal Bill Kennedy as, “more hopeful than cynical...humble and happily so during their time here” and as a group that combines “the purest of ingredients… Innovation, Passion and Inclusion” by Head of School Craig Sellers. Student Commencement speaker Beah Jacobson ’12 said to her classmates that it was their responsibility as recipients of a Friends’ Central education, “…we need go make the world better … as recipients of this education, our job is to build communities who have shared

understandings of what better means, and therefore a common goal. And, just as Friends’ Central has prepared us to do the work of making, and to define our worlds, it has prepared us to come to these shared understandings… we need to have these discussions and determine collective ideals. That’s when things get accomplished. Fostering a shared understanding of better is actually the most interesting, most difficult and most important work that awaits us. And that’s the work that Friends Central has prepared the Class of 2013 for.” Will Pedrick ’12, the second student Commencement speaker of the day, shared with his classmates and the FCS community a popular phrase, “YOLO:

you only live once. And I’ve been thinking a lot about the time I have had at Friends Central and I realized YOHSO. Y-O-H-S-O. You Only High School Once. You only get four years.” But he knows that he will carry what he learned at Friends’ Central with him no matter where he goes. He explains, “Friends’ Central doesn’t end when you graduate. Whatever made me walk out of the Main Building when I was thirteen and tell my Mom ‘this is where I want to go for high school’ is still a part of me. Whatever made me make myself a part of Friends Central, and make Friends Central a part of me, is still gonna be with me next year. So maybe… YOHSO is true. But so is YAFCEAG. Y-A-F-C-E-A-G.

You Always Friends Central Even After Graduation.” After a day of torrential rain, dreams of an outdoor commencement ceremony in celebration of the Class of 2015 seemed impossible. However, a miracle occurred the next day, which was not altogether unexpected considering this year’s graduates. Members of the FCS community woke up to a bright, beautiful, blue sky and pleasant temperatures on Saturday, June 8, just in time for 105 outstanding young men and women to receive their well-deserved diplomas. In his speech about “renewal” and the “return of the light,” Commencement speaker Peter Seidel, Chair of the Arts Department, asked the Class of 2013 “to bring your light to renew our world.” If the day of Commencement 2013 is their first act following their Friends’ Central careers, the world will be a much brighter place because of this Class.

Alumni/ae News

Honoring Joe Ludwig ’69

Parents, alumni/ae, family, and friends came together on these two occasions to demonstrate their love and appreciation for Joe and a job well done!

At Reunion, and then again on June 5, the Friends’ Central community gathered to honor Joe Ludwig’s outstanding, 33year service to Friends’ Central School. Teacher, administrator, parent, and alumnus, Joe has been an essential part of the Friends’ Central fabric since 1956, when he joined the School in kindergarten.

Under Joe’s leadership, the Lower School has flourished; indeed he is the only principal that campus has had. In addition to hiring a dedicated, talented, and creative faculty, Joe infused the Lower School culture with his own passion for learning and care for others. His warmth and compassion are informed by his ability to remember a child’s view of the world. Through simple gestures like learning each child’s name and hand delivering birthday cards, he reminds each child of his or her

Friends’ Central Alumna Awarded Fulbright Research Grant to Greece Sakina Abdus Shakur, a 2009 graduate of Friends’ Central School and a 2013 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, has received a Fulbright Research Grant to travel to Greece. Shakur will study the works of Camus, Kierkegaard, Sartre, and others, while conducting interviews and studying the emotions of young Athenian adults ages 20-27 in the context of Albert Camus’ idea of absurdism. In her Fulbright application Shakur wrote, “The study of Camus will provide the framework for understanding the absurd, a term used to describe humanity’s quest for reason and purpose, which is only met by the irrational and burdensome world. The physicality of pushing a boulder up a hill requires strength and will, which like life, can feel pointless if we are destined to always start again.”

individual importance. Classmate and Clerk of the Board Bob Gassel said of Joe, “The devotion to the children by the faculty is an extension of Joe’s love of education and a reflection of how he viewed the teacher’s role. Educate, nurture, encourage, and thrill are all words that come to mind when thinking of our children’s years at Lower School. It is no wonder they loved going to school every day!” Ever a student of history and geography, Joe plans to travel with his wife, Mary, spend time with his children, Jeffrey ’99, Amy ’04, and Kenny ’08, and his grandchildren, Noah and Lucy. He hopes to walk and read more, and continue to be an active board member of the American Anti-Vivisection Society.

FRIENDS’ CENTRAL SCHOOL

FRIENDS’ CENTRAL SCHOOL

Dear Friends, As a community, we celebrated many achievements during the 2012-2013 school year. Every time I logged onto the website, I was impressed by the many ways our students excel, collaborate and create. We celebrated a national win for our STEAM team; more Friends League championships than I can count on one hand (two coached by FCS alumni/ae!), an eighth grade student who made it to the finals of the National History Bee, a seventh grade that piloted one-to-one computing; and a senior class that set myriad examples for their younger peers, including producing a Presidential Scholar. Together we celebrated our first year with Head of School, Craig Sellers. Our sadness, as we bid farewell to Lower School Principal Joe Ludwig ’69, was eased by the excitement we all felt at the appointment of Alexa Dunnington Quinn ’98 as our new Middle School principal. Our alumni/ae returned to campus for several events and enjoyed FCS “abroad” at events in New York and California. Your generosity helped to make every achievement and milestone possible. From the 1,839 Annual Giving gifts you made, to the $112,000 raised at the All School auction in support of financial aid, to the EITC and OSTC gifts you made through your businesses, to the estate and legacy gifts we received, your generosity supported Friends’ Central’s priorities and helped to shape our community. As we look ahead to the coming year with great enthusiasm and excitement, we present this report to thank you for helping to make so much possible. Sincerely, Lydia A. Martin Director of Institutional Advancement

Marie and Bruce Satalof Parents of Alumna Caroline ’11 As parents of a student who started in Kindergarten and graduated from FCS in 2011, we know firsthand how wonderful the full experience of a Friends’ Central education can be. During the 13 years that our daughter spent at FCS, we saw her develop both personally and educationally in so many ways that would not have been possible without the efforts of the entire staff of the School. From the teachers to the counselors to the coaches who guided her, our daughter could not have been better prepared to move on to college, where she continues to thrive as she begins her junior year. We know how important it is for Friends’ Central School to be a viable destination for young people to receive the best education in academics and life as they work towards a future beyond high school.

Rod Willis ‘77, Parent and Alumnus As the parent of three young alumni/ae and an alumnus myself, I recognize the importance of ensuring that Friends’ Central School is able to carry on its legacy of quality education. It is for this reason that I make contributions to Annual Giving. When I attended FCS in the 70s, I encountered great instructors like Clinton Ely, Jim Davis, and Hans Fickenscher, whose genuine commitment to teaching left an indelible impression on me. Years later, brilliant educators like Ginger Fifer, Julie Plunkett, and Keino Terrell similarly inspired my children and instilled in them a true love of learning. As a result, my children have never hesitated to challenge themselves in their college careers. I know their confidence is thanks to the attention and encouragement they consistently received from the faculty at FCS. It is for this reason that, although my children Natalie ’09, Natasha ’10, and Nathan ’13, have completed their education at Friends’ Central, we will continue to contribute to this great institution.

Andy Newcomb ‘87 My experiences at Friends’ Central played a large part in shaping my perspective on the world and the people that I meet and interact with on a daily basis. I place tremendous value upon this unique perspective and resulting outlook. I believe that it has allowed me to maintain the proper focus on what matters, how to conduct myself, and how to treat any person. I give back to Friends’ Central because I want others to have the opportunity to benefit from the same type of open and valuable learning environment that I did.

Defne Amado ’99 & Reza Madani ’99 Reza’s ceramic snowman loomed large among the K5 creations; mine was the smallest, at just under an inch tall. We took a class trip to Rome, up on the second floor of what’s now the Middle School building. A few years later we designed languages, laws and trade policies for our countries in Polis 8 on a glorious week off from algebra, US history and language arts, and a year after that, we learned to balance a budget while pursuing our life dreams in the Real Life Project. In tenth grade, after a year of learning about the millennia-long history of real countries in Ancient Civilizations, we actually did go to Rome, in one of the most memorable trips of our lives. Several friends who were with us on that and many other FCS journeys will be attending or serving as bridesmaids or groomsmen in our wedding in September. Reza and I give back to Friends’ Central because we don’t want other students’ experiences to fall short of the life-changing ones that shaped our education, our moral codes and our identities. Friends’ Central is more than where we went to school: it’s where we grew up, and it’s who we are. Walking onto campus has always felt like coming home—and investing in your home and family is always worthwhile.

In many instances during my time at the school the administrators, teachers and coaches were instrumental in reinforcing the core values in life of, honesty, integrity, respect, courtesy, confidence, responsibility, judgment, perseverance and sportsmanship.

My classmates became wonderful friends, and to this day fifty eight years later they continue to be people whose accomplishments make me proud and whose friendships I value as we continue to connect on many levels.

I only attended FCS for two years, but they were two of the most meaningful years of my life. The Quaker tradition and principles, excellent academic curriculum, outstanding teachers, the opportunity to think and express myself, to represent the school and to excel in sports, created the whole person.

It is very important for me to give back to the school that gave so much to me. I have donated continuously every year to the school’s Annual Giving Campaign for its many needs. Additionally, I am honored to be the Class Representative to the school, which I thoroughly enjoy in assisting to make our class reunions successful and our class Annual Giving total significant in its impact. Bottom line …. I want the school to flourish and the students of today to have the same opportunities that I did. They need to enjoy a beautiful campus, excellent learning environment and an all encompassing college preparatory experience.

Tim Patterson ’59 I try to make a contribution to FCS annually because of my wonderful twelve year experience at the school. I remember all my teachers in the Lower School and the major thrust of study for those years. I remember taking art with Hobson Pittman and as my wife is a painter I always state who I studied under. I certainly remember the Upper School with many great teachers: Clayton Farraday (Science and Religion), John Burrowes (English), Stan Cherim (Chemistry), Mrs. Woerner (English), Miss Whitcraft (English) and others. I am sure I drove others nuts: Mrs. Ham (Homeroom), and Mr. Cresson (Math). My greatest love came from sports. In Lower School at gym, Frank Groff had the ability of making everyone feel like an All-American. We started playing other Inter-Ac schools in 4th Grade on the 90 lb. football team with Frank Groff as coach. We were undefeated for a number of years. That same year we started to play others in baseball as well. Football was my greatest love and we had two of the best coaches ever in Dave Kirk and Dick Burgess. These two gentlemen were able to take a small group of guys and make us winners losing only one game our Junior Year to Penn Charter and helping us go undefeated our Senior Year. It was a great experience. With these fond memories I am pleased to be able to give a little back each year. I hope today’s students are getting out of FCS what I did.

Talia East ‘10 Friends’ Central was a second home to me during the four years I spent there. I absolutely loved it, and I’ve met some of my favorite people in the world there. FCS is a special place, and I do my best to give back every year. Friends’ Central will always be in my heart, even when I’m 100 years old!

Sammi Greenberg ’10 Friends’ Central was my home away from home for 14 years, and since graduating in 2010, I have been no stranger to the School. During my experience, I took full advantage of the triple A’s: academics, athletics, and arts. FCS not only encouraged but gave me the liberty to play on a Varsity sports team each season, have a voice in the chorus, and take interesting and unique classes like Botany and Capitalism and Consumption. Each spring when I finish classes at F&M, I come back to FCS and call my classmates and peers to reminisce on our Phoenix days. Connecting with my classmates is so significant because many younger alumni/ae don’t know the impact of just a few dollars, or the importance of continuing the cycle of giving so that current students can enjoy the same opportunities. Giving back is the least I can do for all that FCS has done for me for over a decade. Each day shaped the person I am today, and for that I choose to support the institution every year that I am able!

FRIENDS’ CENTRAL SCHOOL

BLACKBURN SOCIETY The Board of Trustees established the Blackburn Society to honor individuals who have made provisions in their wills or estate plans to benefit Friends’ Central School. These donors, who have informed the School of their intentions, have helped provide for the School’s future through a variety of gift planning vehicles including bequest intentions, testamentary trusts, life income vehicles such as pooled income investments, charitable gift annuities, gifts of real estate, and other deferred gifts. Their vision and wisdom extend beyond the immediate needs of the School, and their generosity provides a source of income which the School can depend upon and use to plan for generations ahead.

Ann Wolfe ’63 I always wanted to give back to FCS for the wonderful education and spiritual grounding I received, but money wasn’t always plentiful when annual giving came around. I decided that putting FCS into my estate plan was one way I could guarantee more financial support to help the next generation of FCS students have the same that I did.

UNRESTRICTED ANNUAL GIVING

PARENT GIVING

Elaine Gillison, Parent of Alumnae Olivia ’10 and Victoria ‘13 For the past 15 years, our family has been part of the Friends’ Central School community. To say that it went by quickly is an understatement! I never thought that time could pass so fast. My daughters, Olivia ’10 and Victoria ’13, have benefited from the best education that your money can buy. It may sound cliche but very true. Everett and I have met some extraordinary people who will remain our friends for years to come. The educational experiences and teaching methods are superior to any other private, independent school. I’m still not sure how a third grader convinced me to pick up discarded Christmas trees, tie them to the roof of my minivan and transport them to the FCS Lower School, so they could be used to create a bird blind! And yes, I performed this crazy task, not once but twice! My girls obviously paid close attention to the English classes on “compelling arguments for the environment.” Outstanding, non-traditional education didn’t stop in Lower School; it continued until the end. My oldest daughter had us pull over on the side of the road, in the middle of Ohio, to collect purple wildflowers while we were doing college tours. I’m glad the Ohio state trooper had children and understood when we said, “We’re okay. Just some samples for a science project.” These experiences don’t even include the vast curriculum diversity in the arts, athletics, and education abroad that both my daughters were able to experience.

The only regret that I have is that we only contributed to the Annual Giving Fund for 13 years. You see, I didn’t realize that every gift counts, no matter what size the contribution is. Because all gifts, pulled together, help create great experiences. Parents, alumni/ae and friends who came before us contributed so our girls could enjoy this diverse educational experience. I encourage you and your entire family to give early and give often. Pay it forward. Someone did it for us, we will continue to do it for you, but we need your help. Together we can make sure this incredible educational institution will continue to meet its mission, obtain its goals, and graduate stellar citizens that will enhance our global community.
