Letter from the Head of School

The Magazine of Friends’ Central School 8:1 Fall 2016

Dear Friends, Each year at Friends’ Central, throughout the School, we focus on one Quaker testimony. For the 2015-2016 year, that testimony was Community, and while community is important every year, it is particularly gratifying to reflect on the year past through this lens. The school year ended, as every year does, with the graduating Class marching into Commencement as students and processing out as newly minted members of our alumni/ae community. This was a remarkable year for the Class of 2016. They brought home awards in areas as diverse as debate, math modeling, drama, and athletics. As we faced the poignant moment of “letting go,” we could only marvel at their readiness and take heart in the fact that, while their role has changed, they are no less a part of our community. The idea that graduates are forever part of Friends’ Central was evident as our alumni/ae from the “1s and 6s” gathered for Reunion 2016. Time and distance fell away for devoted classmates from destinations ranging from England to Wynnewood as they celebrated their connection to one another and to their alma mater. Witnessing the passion they feel for this community and for their classmates and hearing about the extraordinary ways they are living out our School’s Mission and Vision bolsters my feeling that the Class of 2016 will stay connected, and we will be wowed. In our opening meetings for faculty and staff in August, we began our focus on the testimony of Simplicity with a talk by Eileen Flanagan ’80. Eileen – who is an author, speaker, and FCS parent – delighted, challenged, and affirmed our community’s efforts. She urged us to consider simplicity as a way to identify what isn’t important, let go of it, and make space for the most important elements of our lives. As you read through this issue of Quaker Works, I urge you to examine its contents through the lens of Community. I believe that, like me, you will be excited and inspired by our students, by our faculty, by our alumni/ae, and by the extraordinary generosity displayed in the Annual Report. Thank you for being part of the Friends’ Central community. I hope to see you on campus soon!

Breaking Ground at the Lower School In March, Lower School students helped get things started at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Lower School Ulmer Family Light Lab. (Read more about the Light Lab on page 28.)

Mission to Mars In science class this spring, 5th graders studied Astronaut Scott Kelly’s one-year mission to the International Space Station as part of their space exploration project – Mission to Mars. To culminate their study, they held a flight simulation to Mars, accompanied by a Fair where they presented their extensive and impressive research. In March, Dr. Mathias Basner (pictured above at left) visited Tiffany Borsch’s class to talk to the students about his research related to the Year in Space. Dr. Basner is one of the leaders of the Penn Medicine research team who developed a cognitive test battery, called Cognition, for the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI), which measures the impact of spaceflight stressors (microgravity, radiation, confinement, isolation, high CO2 level exposure, and sleep loss) on astronauts’ cognitive performance.

An American History Lesson for Grade 8 Students Middle School teacher Jacob Fogel invited Masaru Edmund Nakawatase to speak to his 8th grade class about his life and his social activism. Nakawatese was born in an Japanese American internment camp in Poston, Arizona during WWII.

Middle School Mini-Courses a Hit! This spring, students in grades 6-8 took part in mini-courses - a favorite annual tradition. Directed by Middle School teachers, students engage in interactive learning on a range of extracurricular topics in and around FCS and the city of Philadelphia. These projects are intentionally structured to foster creative, cross-divisional learning and to encourage collaboration between older and younger students.

Spring Concerts 30 Reasons Not To Be In A Play 30 Reasons Not To Be In A Play, a one-of-a-kind comedy by Alan Haehnel about the horrors and hardships that befall those who feel the call of the stage, was this winter’s Middle School Drama production. Actors and stage crew members worked hard to present this hilarious play, which was a big success.

This spring, the Instrumental and Choral concerts in Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools were a huge hit, with the many talents of musicians and singers on full display.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream The landscape of New Orleans provided a magical backdrop for Upper School Drama’s modern retelling of Shakespeare’s favorite comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the students and staff alike were very excited to share their high-energy and highly creative version of the production with audiences this February.

CAPPIES Triumphs It was another outstanding season for Upper School Drama, who received 17 nominations and top honors at the Greater Philadelphia Cappies (Critics and Awards program) in May for best production of a play (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). Alex Bessen ‘17 also won Best Male Vocalist, and Naomi Detre ‘16 won Best Featured Actress and Best Hair & Makeup Design.

Students Gain New Perspectives through Cultural Immersion For three weeks every other summer, Friends’ Central Upper School students have the opportunity to travel to Cuzco, Peru, where they live with Peruvian host families, participate in community service, and attend four hours of Spanish classes daily. The culmination of their trip is a rigorous four-day hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, “the lost city of the Incas,” which includes three nights of camping and ends with a spectacular view from 7,970 feet above sea level. This summer was the eighth trip for faculty member Cristina Perez, who began the program in 2002. The students took part in community service at La Clinica de San Juan de Dios, a children’s clinic and orphanage. Carolyn Spellacy ’16 and Olivia Comstock ’17 wrote about

their experiences working with the children in the clinic and orphanage this year, “Playing with the children was one of the most direct ways of feeling that you were helping out. The children covered a wide range of ages, and most had disabilities that placed them in wheelchairs and/or limited their ability to speak ... The time we spent at the clinic was very rewarding – just knowing that we were helping people.” Every afternoon, the FCS students had four hours of Spanish school, then they returned to their host family’s home for dinner. Samantha Roshkoff ’17 and Claire Coss ’18 reported on the Peru Trip Blog, “Every time we walk into our kitchen at the end of the day, we are always greeted with a big smile and ‘¡Hola mis amigas!’ from Yaquito, the two-year-old boy in our host family. He never fails to put a smile on our faces. Dinners are always fun and filled with laughter, while talking to Yaquito’s grandmother and great grandmother about Peruvian culture and their large and interesting family.” In last week of the trip was the four-day hike of the Inca Trail. The group began the hike with two grueling days of climbing – ascending to 14,000 feet and adjusting as well as possible to the significant increase in altitude. “That physical aspect, that challenge, is such a huge part of this trip – so important and valuable for the experience,” Cristina Perez shared.

Particle Physics Class Adventures For the Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics summer class, taught by John Gruber and Anna Schall, it was an incredible three weeks. Along with tackling a broad array of complex topics and ideas in the classroom, the class took three field trips: to the Radiation Science and Engineering Center (RSEC) at Penn State to visit the Brazeale Nuclear Reactor; to the University of Pennsylvania’s Proton Therapy Center to see physics applied to medicine in radiation oncology; and to Illinois for a tour of FermiLab, The University of Chicago’s Kersten Physics Teaching Center, and the Adler Planetarium on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Middle School Chess Whiz Adam Serota ’21 participated in the US Chess Federation’s National Chess Tournament in April. Adam is ranked nationally in his age group for chess.

In April, the Upper School Parliamentary Debate Team headed to Susquehanna University for the State Debate Tournament. The team – Austin Margulies ’16, Avital Schweitzer ’16, and Lily Snider ’16 – advanced to the finals in a field of 24 teams in the category of Parliamentary Debate, besting last year’s state champions in the quarterfinal round, before succumbing to a team from a Pittsburgh high school. The FCS team’s success made them the second best Parliamentary Debate Team in the State of Pennsylvania!

90-Second Newbery Festival and Author Visit James Kennedy, author of The Order of Odd-Fish, came to FCS in April to visit Middle School classrooms and host the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival – an annual video contest in which students create 90-second movies that tell the entire stories of Newbery-winning books. Kennedy wrote in his blog, “One of the reasons we brought the 90-Second Newbery to Friends’ Central was because of the numerous great movies we received from the School that year, led by teachers Alex McDonnell and Rebecca Guenther ... It was a really welcoming vibe at this school, and the students were very engaged and energetic!”

Phoenix Game Day Middle Schoolers enjoyed their annual Phoenix Game Day 2016 in June. Team colors were on display as the Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow teams competed in this culminating activity. The annual Team Cheer and Song Competition is always a highlight before the games get started on the track field.

Grade 4 Ellis Island Every spring, the 4th grade has a unit on immigration, primarily focusing on the wave of immigrants that came to the United States between 1880 and 1910. The study includes a simulation in the classroom, with students and visitors assigned different roles and reenacting the experience of an immigrant going through Ellis Island.

Bell Ringing at the Lower School A signature FCS event that took place on the last day of school was the 5th grade Meeting for Leaving and Bell Ringing Ceremony, where each 5th grader rang the Friendship Bell to mark the transition to Middle School. On the same day, 8th graders also celebrated their transition with a Meeting for Leaving.

Marcus Chiang ’23 rings the Friendship Bell.

André Lee provided facilitator training around the film to Middle and Upper School student leaders.

Groundbreaking Documentary Comes to FCS Grade 8-11 students, teachers, and parents had the opportunity to watch I’m Not Racist … Am I?, a groundbreaking documentary on race, and take part in workshops facilitated by the filmmakers themselves. André Lee, one of the film’s producers, said, “During my visits to Friends’ Central, I was so impressed by the capacity of this community to approach this topic with intellect and heart. I witnessed the community lean into the discomfort and embrace the tension created by the conversations around race and racism. This is not easy work, and I felt welcomed by those who were comfortable and uncomfortable.”

Letter from the Clerk of the Board Dear Friends, When I graduated from Friends’ Central in 1973, I did not imagine that I would one day have the opportunity to Clerk the Board of my beloved school. It is truly an honor. I am thrilled to work with Craig Sellers as he enters his fifth year as Head of School. The clarity of focus he brings to the strategic tasks the Board will address in the coming years will ensure a productive, inspiring, and positive partnership. This is an exciting time for Friends’ Central. We are a school that enjoys an excellent reputation among peer schools, both locally and nationally. We have a strong, agile, and well-supported faculty that is mastering, and in some cases leading, changes in education. The community has just completed a year of Appreciative Inquiry, culminating in a retreat where over 100 parents, faculty, Board members, alumni/ae, and students imagined a future that both fortifies our core strengths and leads our community in bold new directions. The Ulmer Family Light Lab is under construction at the Lower School, and the Board has identified a number of other fundraising priorities. Included are dramatic renovations that will transform Shallcross Hall into a true center for the school community and increasing endowment for faculty professional development and financial aid. Throughout the changes we envision, Friends’ Central must continue to be a place that offers its community uniquely solid ground. I am proud of the work FCS has done around issues of diversity, inclusivity, and social justice, and I look forward to continued work and progress. As I take on this new challenge, I follow (former) Clerk of the Board, Bob Gassel ’69, whose dedication to the School has been unprecedented. He has devoted an enormous amount of time and energy to guiding a new Head of School and to reshaping the Board of Trustees. During his four years as Clerk, Bob has been ever present. I am grateful for his remarkable and unmatched service to Friends’ Central, and I look forward to continuing on the positive course he has set. It is my hope that, as a Board, we will follow Bob’s lead and strive to be present and visible to the community. I am a firm believer and take it as a matter of faith that Quaker education is a strong and positive force in the world. The pace and scale of change in the 21st century may seem to challenge the Quaker values, principles, and practices we teach at Friends’ Central, but they remain central to realizing our Mission and Vision. I look forward to meeting and working with you in the years to come. Sincerely,

Philip Scott

“ It is impossible to adequately express my gratitude to the School and to those faculty, staff, and volunteers who give of their time to help make Friends’ Central the outstanding school we love so dearly. “ Though it is not easy to step away from the Board, I am thrilled that Phil Scott ’73 has agreed to take on the clerkship. I look forward to the great things that lie ahead for FCS!”

Friends’ Central’s New Lower School Food Initiative Among the many exciting changes taking place this fall at the Lower School, we are thrilled to be introducing a brand new food program designed to inspire children to work toward a healthier and more sustainable world by teaching them to source, produce, and prefer delicious, planet-friendly foods. We believe in the link between healthy minds and healthy bodies, and the new food program, which we have dubbed “Lettuce Feed You” is an exciting step toward linking our curriculum and garden together with the food we eat. Integral to this new program is Chef Wadiya, our new Lower School Food Leader, who has years of experience preparing healthy food for children.

Lettuce Feed You Highlights include: w Delicious, fresh-from-scratch, sustainable, and whenever possible, local and organic foods prepared in-house by expert chef Wadiya Gooden w Purchasing flexibility. Parents have the choice of signing their child up for the yearlong full meal plan or using an easy pre-pay debit system to pay per meal. w A link between farm, garden, and table. The Friends’ Central lunch table is now supplied overwhelmingly by local farms – including the expansive organic garden at FCS. Chef Wadiya introduces the meals to students and has time-tested methods for encouraging children to try new foods. w F ood that connects to curriculum. If first grade students are, for example, studying India, then they may well find themselves tasting Indian food in the cafeteria. w O pportunities to participate. Students have the chance to take part in food preparation in safe, age-appropriate ways. These include serving as table captains, helping create pizza flavors for Pizza Friday, and chopping toppings.

Welcome to Our New Food Leader! We are thrilled to introduce the Lower School’s new Food Leader, Wadiya Gooden. Wadiya brings a wealth of experience. She has served as a lead Program Coordinator for the Vetri Foundation where she implemented “from scratch” cooking in seven different schools. She has also prepared meals for children at Penn Wynne Elementary School. In addition to her excellent cooking skills, she is an organic gardener and a true believer in the relationship between food and well being. When asked about joining the FCS community, Wadiya said, “For quite some time, I have been on a mission to feed children healthier meals. Now, I have been afforded the opportunity to do so in this amazing setting. It doesn’t get any better than this!”

COMMENCEMENT 2016 The Spirit of the Class of 2016

On Saturday, June 11, 2016, the 95 members of the Class of 2016 marched down the center aisle of Commencement Terrace for their last moment on campus as Friends’ Central students. They departed as graduates, joining the ranks of the many proud and distinguished Friends’ Central alumni/ae around the world. There is no doubt that this Class will “create profound experiences and achieve remarkable things,” as Upper School faculty member Frank Fisher said in his Commencement address. From sustainability initiatives to award-winning productions to outstanding athletic achievements, the Class of 2016 has already begun achieving remarkable things. Fisher shared, “As individuals, you have proven yourselves to be thoughtful, creative, and talented. You have shown yourselves to be active agents of community in many ways. You have all shared in multiple class discussions that literally created new understanding and meaning. You, the members of the Class of 2016, can make

things happen. Many of you have been leaders, but all of you, at one point or another, have pitched in. This is part of the spirit of this Class.” Head of School Craig Sellers thanked the Class, not only for what they have already accomplished but also for what they will undoubtedly achieve in the future. “For that abiding sense of hope for the future that you give us, Class of 2016, I want to thank you on behalf of everyone here today,” said Sellers. “There is no doubt in my mind that the Class of 2016’s good work will bring comfort, growth, and peaceful transformation to our world for generations to come.” Student speaker Derin Caglar ’16 asked of his classmates, many of whom he’s known since they were five years old, “Please, wherever you end up, spread love as much as you can. The world is a complicated and intricate place with no easy answers, and we don’t get to choose to not be adults, to not be a part of the world.

It’s remembering the teen and the child that came before and learning from them, loving them, and getting ready to breathe in once more, before it’s time to breathe out again.” These 95 graduates are destined for greatness, and the best is yet to come for each of them. “I’m going to be honest with you all – I don’t believe that graduating high school is all that big of an achievement for the Class of 2016,” said student speaker Rucha Alur ’16. “We can definitely be proud of what we’ve accomplished together during our time here, but the Class of 2016 started doing incredible things much earlier than high school. In 4th grade, we

created Neotopia - a fully functional colony of families and houses with a self-sustaining economy based on a mixture of currency and trade. It’s very impressive what the Class of 2016 could do when only 9 years old and bored during recess … Imagine what we’re going to do after being set loose on the world. So that’s why I don’t believe that graduating high school will be it for us. I don’t think that this is our peak. Because if there’s one thing I can tell you all for sure about Friends’ Central’s graduating Class of 2016, it’s that we won’t stop here.” QW

UPPER SCHOOL STUDENT AWARDS At the Upper School Academic Awards Ceremony in May, 23 members of the Class of 2016 were inducted into the Cum Laude Society. As members of the Friends’ Central Cum Laude Society, part of their responsibilities, explained Head of School Craig Sellers, is “to make some contribution to the ongoing search for greater understanding of the world in which we live.” Along with the Cum Laude inductees, many students were recognized for their achievements in academics, arts, athletics, service, and citizenship. (ABOVE) The 2016 inductees into the Friends’ Central School Cum Laude Society were (in alpha order):

ANNUAL REPORT of GIFTS 2015-2016

Development Office Bob Cotter Director of Development Linda Waxman Wasserman ’75 Director of Alumni/ae Affairs Matthew Cohen Assistant Director of Development Jim Davis Archivist and Alumni/ae Associate Kim Emmons-Benjet Director of Annual Giving

The Annual Report of Gifts acknowledges all those who have made gifts to Friends’ Central School during the fiscal year July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016. The Development Office has worked carefully to ensure the accuracy of the information contained within these pages. If you come across an error or omission, please accept our apologies and advise us of the error by calling 610.645.5039 or emailing giving@friendscentral.org. Dear Friends, These are great times for investing in Friends’ Central School. A perfect example is the funding of the Ulmer Family Light Lab, which will make an immediate, major difference in the educational life of students on the Lower School campus and is another step toward the School’s bright future. Thank you to the more than 1,500 donors who contributed to the Friends’ Central Fund, Capital projects, student support, endowment, and financial aid. Each contribution during the 2015-2016 school year had an impact on students and faculty. Gifts support the academic program, athletics, faculty salaries, and so much more. None of these investments would have happened without a decision to contribute made by an individual donor, a family, or an organization—but many dedicated volunteers, an active Development Committee of the Board of Trustees, and a terrific Development Office staff worked to make it possible for so many supporters to join together to help Friends’ Central students this year and in the future. It was a busy year, with visits to alumni/ae in Florida, California, New York, and Washington DC, as well as another successful Reunion, with over 300 alumni/ae visiting campus. This year saw a record amount contributed to Friends’ Central through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs. These business-focused tax credit options resulted in financial support for many families with limited resources, helping to create a talented and diverse peer group for all students. Looking forward, the fundraising priorities of Friends’ Central School in 2016-2017 include the Friends’ Central Fund to support current needs and to enhance the educational experience for students every day, endowed funds for faculty professional development and financial aid, and funds to support the upcoming renovation of Shallcross Hall. Thank you all for your amazing support! Sincerely,

ON THE COVER: The All-School Assembly in the spring brings together all three divisions of the School, giving students a chance to speak and share advice, highlight campus and world events, and celebrate retiring staff and faculty.

(At left) Board Clerk Robert Gassel ’69 (left) and Head of School Craig Sellers “break ground” on the Ulmer Family Light Lab, assisted by Lower School students. (At right) Bev and Rich Ulmer ’60.

THE ULMER FAMILY LIGHT LAB Thanks in large part to the generosity of Bev and Rich Ulmer ’60, the building known as the Carriage House on our Lower School is undergoing an incredible transformation into a cutting-edge new facility, the Ulmer Family Light Lab. The challenge facing the architects and the builders was to maintain the integrity of the building’s historical exterior while completely rethinking and reconstructing the interior to turn it into a Makerspace - a collaborative space for learning, exploring, and sharing that uses both technology and hands-on work to help students “create something out of nothing” and to explore innovation. Scheduled for completion this fall, the Light Lab, with its four studios, will bring together our talented faculty with state-ofthe-art design, increased space, and a plethora of tools and resources. Friends’ Central teachers are pioneers in play-based, hands-on experiential learning, and this new space will allow them to continue to build on this tradition of excellence across the curriculum. Bev Ulmer and her husband Rich ’60 pledged a one million dollar gift to ensure the Light Lab comes to full fruition. The gift honors Rich’s parents, Audrie Gardam Ulmer ’37 and Walter Ulmer, and his sister, Carolyn Ulmer Gorman ’66, and is the latest of many generous donations that Bev and Rich have made to Friends’ Central. Previously, they funded the Ulmer Fund for Faculty Excellence, as well as the Ulmer Family Tennis Complex. As President and CEO of InVitro International, a Californiabased company that provides technology-driven, non-animal

testing methods, Rich is clearly passionate about innovation and learning, and he and Bev felt that the Light Lab was the ideal way to support the School. “I love the idea of exposing little kids to new and exciting materials and ideas and letting them explore, asking questions and looking for answers, but not necessarily finding them,” explained Rich. “It’s really about the process of learning, not an end product. Bev and I identified with the purpose of this project and feel a connection to the idea of a Light Lab, a place designed to light up inquiry-based learning as soon as possible in a child’s life.” The four main studios of the Light Lab (focused on natural sciences, fabrication, media/computing, and design) will spark the imagination, creativity, and problem-solving mindset students need to succeed in a rapidly changing and complex world. When Rich shared the Light Lab plans with his daughter, an elementary school principal, she was excited by what we are planning for students so early on in their schooling. She urged him to support the project and its amazing implications for our students and teachers. “The Ulmer Family Light Lab puts Friends’ Central at the very forefront of education,” said Head of School Craig Sellers. “In addition to providing a facility that has no equal for our youngest students, we see this as a visionary investment in teaching and learning that recognizes the importance of making, designing, prototyping, and the like as integral to great education. I am thrilled that Rich and Bev are making such an incredible contribution to transforming the Friends’ Central experience for years to come.” QW

FROM BOARD OF TRUSTEES CLERK Dear Friends, On behalf of Friends’ Central’s Board of Trustees, thank you for your support of the School during the 2015-2016 school year.

Robert Gassel

The Friends’ Central Board of Trustees is made up of 20 alumni/ae, current parents, and parents of alumni/ae who volunteer their time to serve. The School’s bylaws require that a majority of the members of the Board belong to the Religious Society of Friends. As the National Association of Independent Schools puts it so well in its guidelines, the Board is responsible for adopting “the school’s mission, vision, and strategic goals and then establishing policies and plans that reinforce them.” In addition, the Board must “be a careful steward of the school’s resources and be accountable for the institution’s financial stability. Boards oversee operating budgets, ensuring the preservation of capital assets and endowment, and actively help raise money for the school.” The Board of Trustees hires and evaluates the Head of School and must work in tandem with the Head of School, being “careful to focus its primary work on long-range and strategic issues, not the daily operations of the school.” Friends’ Central’s Board of Trustees has standing committees that include Executive, Development, Finance, Investment, Long Range Planning, Property, School Life, and Trustees. This past year, major initiatives of the Board included the yearlong Appreciative Inquiry process which culminated in a retreat where over 100 parents, faculty, Board members, alumni/ae, and students shared perspectives on the future of the School; the funding and construction of the Ulmer Family Light Lab on the Lower School campus; completion of a Feasibility Study that will guide future fundraising priorities; and preliminary work on the next Strategic Plan. On a personal note, in June, I stepped down as Clerk of the Friends’ Central Board of Trustees and retired from the Board after serving for over 20 years. It is impossible to adequately express my gratitude to the School and to those faculty, staff, and volunteers who give of their time to help make Friends’ Central the outstanding school we love so dearly. I also must thank my wife, Flavia, and our children, Brooke ’99 and Bruno ’16. Board service requires an extraordinary amount of support and patience from one’s family, and I could not have asked for more. I have confidence that, between the Board of Trustees, an excellent Head of School who has put together a fantastic team, and a peerless faculty, the School is moving in a great direction. Though it is not easy to step away from the Board, I am thrilled that Phil Scott ’73 has agreed to take on the clerkship. I look forward to the great things that lie ahead for FCS! Sincerely,

Robert Gassel ’69

BLACKBURN SOCIETY During a recent visit to Friends’ Central, an alumna talked about the joy of maximizing the impact her giving could have on the School. She was able to do so through planned giving. The School’s history is replete with examples of the power of planned gifts; Friends’ Central is, in part, the School it is today because of the foresight of these individuals. Planned giving donors are all members of the Blackburn Society, named in honor of Eliza E. Blackburn ’22, whose estate gift has benefitted Friends’ Central for many decades. While there are numerous possibilities for planned gifts, three common opportunities are bequests, charitable gift annuities, and IRA rollovers. BEQUEST A bequest is a gift from your estate – a transfer of cash, securities, or other property made through your estate plans. You can make a bequest to Friends’ Central by including language in your will or living trust leaving a portion of your estate to the School, or by designating Friends’ Central as a beneficiary of your retirement account or life insurance policy. A bequest costs nothing now but gives you the satisfaction of knowing you have strengthened Friends’ Central in the future. CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY In this arrangement where you irrevocably transfer assets to Friends’ Central and receive income for life, income will go to you or someone chosen by you. The trust can run for your lifetime or for a specified number of years; then the trust assets go to Friends’ Central. For such gifts to Friends’ Central, the School works with Friends Fiduciary Corporation. IRA ROLLOVER This option was finally made permanent by the government this year. The charitable IRA rollover is designed for individuals age 70 1/2 or older to give directly to qualified charities and avoid tax obligations you might incur from required or elective IRA distributions. The amount donated is not included in your adjusted gross income (AGI) and thus not subject to percentage limits for charitable deductions.

THE CLASS OF 1966 REUNITED IN PERSON AND ONLINE BY RICHARD MCCARRAHER ’66

Although it seems that, just yesterday, we were enjoying our carefree youth, we suddenly realized it has been 50 years! When the Class of 1966 first began to look ahead to our 50th Reunion milestone, we had no idea what to expect. The FCS Alumni/ae Office contacted Ruth Ann Wagner and Laurie Clement to ask them to help with the organizing. They then reached out to many classmates and found Eric Whiteway and me, Richard M, to complete the Reunion team. Ruth Ann and Laurie used the standard methods of phone calls and letters to contact classmates. Meanwhile, Eric and I wanted to rekindle the creative approach we were known for 50 years ago. Of course, in 1966, we were restricted to using 35 mm cameras and telephone landlines. We decided to bring the Class of ’66 into the current world of computers and the internet. We used a Yahoo email account and a Facebook group to share the many pictures, writings, and video that we collected. We sent out weekly emails with stories of our time together to remind classmates of our days at Friends’ Central. Soon, many classmates began to respond with their own memories of our school days. We also exchanged information and pictures about our experiences and our family lives over the past 50 years. Ultimately, after many hours of work by Eric, an e-Book was created to commemorate our 50th Reunion with all our classmates – even those who could not attend Reunion. From left: Laurie Clement, Ruth Ann Wagner, Richard McCarraher, and Eric Whiteway sing the FCS Alma Mater at Reunion 2016

Sadly, over the years, our Class has lost nine classmates. The entire Reunion team tracked down and contacted relatives of our deceased friends. Subsequently, we were able to share a tribute to each of our lost classmates at our Reunion dinner. It was especially nice that a spouse of one deceased classmate joined us for Reunion. Our story cannot leave out our special 50th Reunion Class Gift. Our classmates responded generously to Eric Whiteway’s challenge - each giving what he/she could, and several giving much more than the challenge, so we were able to reach our goal. With the goal met, the Class has now achieved recognition in the form of a garden at Friends’ Central dedicated to current and future students. The garden is located in an area where students can sit and spend meaningful time. Our plaque displayed in the garden contains the following inspirational quote that we hope will touch students for generations to come:

“ Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!” - Anne Frank The Class of 1966 will continue to use technology to stay in touch with each other and with Friends’ Central School. We are grateful that we all reconnected!

Loyalty Donor Recognition We are grateful to our generous donors who have supported Friends’ Central School consistently every year. The icons in this Annual Report represent 10+, 20+, and 30+ years of giving.

ANNUAL FUND Q&A WHAT IS THE FRIENDS’ CENTRAL FUND? The Friends’ Central Fund, our school’s annual fund, is crucial to the School’s success every year. Funds go immediately into the School’s budget to support ongoing operations. WHERE DOES THE MONEY FROM TUITION AND PHILANTHROPY GO? Seventy-nine percent of the budget is spent on people – salaries and benefits for the faculty and staff who make all the good things happen at Friends’ Central. The remainder of the budget is spent on curricular and extracurricular programs, financial aid, administration, and the physical plant on both campuses. CAN A FRIENDS’ CENTRAL FUND GIFT BE DESIGNATED TO A PARTICULAR AREA? Friends’ Central offers six areas for gift designation: Greatest Current Need, Student Programs, Arts, Athletics, Faculty and Staff Retirement and Support, and Financial Aid. WHY RAISE FUNDS FOR FINANCIAL AID? Financial aid benefits the entire school community. Tuition assistance helps create a talented and diverse peer group, exposing all students to multiple perspectives and preparing students to live and work in an

increasingly global society. Financial aid is thus a critical component of academic excellence both for individuals and for the entire school. WHO IS ASKED TO GIVE? Everyone who is part of the Friends’ Central community – current and past parents, alumni/ae, grandparents, Trustees, faculty, staff, and friends of the School – is asked to participate in the Friends’ Central Fund. There is a strong tradition of giving at Friends’ Central. Each generation has played its part to ensure that future students are able to obtain an outstanding education. Contributions are a continuation of a legacy of support and generosity. SHOULD I GIVE IF I RECEIVE TUITION ASSISTANCE? Even though many families make financial sacrifices to pay tuition, it remains important for every member of the Friends’ Central community to participate in the Friends’ Central Fund at some level. Making a donation to the Friends’ Central Fund has no negative impact on financial aid, and every gift, regardless of size, is appreciated. WHAT ARE LEADERSHIP GIFTS? Leadership gifts ($1,845 and upwards) help to ensure the long-term strength and sustainability of the School. Leadership gifts are crucial to the

success of the Friends’ Central Fund. In 2015-2016, gifts at this level represented 60 percent of the total raised. CAN SMALL GIFTS MAKE AN IMPACT?! Every gift makes a difference! Gifts to the Friends’ Central Fund last year ranged from $5 to $25,000. Consider this: last year the School received over 600 gifts of $100 or less, totaling almost $50,000! SERIOUSLY? PARTICIPATION MATTERS? Participation matters because it shows dedication to the mission and vision of Friends’ Central School. Participation generates enthusiasm and encourages others to join in celebrating and supporting the School. It makes a difference every day in every facet of our students’ experience. The School’s financial strength is dependent upon all members of the community. Also, foundations, grant-making institutions, and corporations look at participation as an indicator of support from the community when making decisions about funding.

WHAT MATTERS MOST IS SIMPLY THE ACT OF GIVING ... THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT THIS YEAR!

Giving early also allowed the School to put the funds immediately to work for programs and activities in the current school year. To see a list of Green Club Donors, visit friendscentral.org/2016greenclub. If you are interested in “giving green” in the future, please email Kim Emmons-Benjet at kbenjet@friendscentral.org.

WAYS OF GIVING A donor can make a difference at Friends’ Central School by making a charitable contribution in the following ways. If you have any questions about your gift or how to make a gift, please call the Development Office at 610-645-5043 or email giving@friendscentral.org.

Gifts of Cash, Check, or Money Order

Matching Gifts

Checks should be made payable to “Friends’ Central School” and dropped at the City Avenue Campus Main Building Development Office or mailed to Friends’ Central School, Development Office 1101 City Avenue Wynnewood, PA 19096

Matching Gifts can double or triple the value of your gift. Simply obtain a Matching Gift form from your company’s personnel or human resources office, fill out the portion to be completed by the donor for your employer, and mail a copy of the form to the School along with your gift. Friends’ Central Fund Matching Gifts are counted towards a donor’s membership in one of the Friends’ Central Fund Gift Clubs.

Online Giving American Express®, Visa®, MasterCard®, or Discover credit card gifts can be entered via our online giving site friendscentral.org/gift or our monthly recurring gift site or by calling the office at 610-645-5043.

Recurring Gift Option By making a monthly recurring gift, you can spread the payment of your gift over the entire year. You determine the amount and number of months of payment when you make your gift. • A $5 monthly gift from September to June is a $50 gift • A $205 monthly gift adds up to a Leadership Gift

Gifts of Stock and Appreciated Securities A gift of appreciated securities (stocks, bonds, and mutual funds) offers the benefit of supporting the School while offering a tremendous financial planning tool for a donor, since income taxes are reduced by the charitable donation and there is no capital gains tax on the appreciation. Please contact Kim Emmons-Benjet at 610-645-4499 to obtain transfer information.

The Blackburn Society Named in honor of Eliza E. Blackburn ’22, the Blackburn Society was established by the Board of Trustees to honor individuals who have made provisions in their will or estate plans to benefit Friends’ Central. (Please see page 31 for more information.)
