Dear Friends of Friends Education,

As we reflect on Friends Council on Education’s work in 2015-2016, a simple phrase springs to mind: Growing Together. It was a year of progress through collaboration in many areas, including programming, our work with Friends school educators, and fundraising efforts to support our work. It is with heartfelt gratitude that we write, to you Michelle Y. Holland, Clerk our Friends Council donors, to express our thanks for supporting our work and to share what has been made possible Matt Glendinning, Assistant Clerk through your generosity. 2015-2016

Noteworthy in 2015-2016 was growth in programming for Friends school educators. FCE’s signature workshop, Educators New to Quakerism (ENTQ), mushroomed from three to five offerings and expanded beyond Pennsylvania to New York and the Southern region. We held 12 peer networks and eight workshops, serving over 649 Quaker school educators across the country. Your support is critical to this as it supports both programming and scholarships for teachers to attend. We thank you! In April of 2016, we celebrated Friends Council’s 85th Anniversary. We are pleased to share that we surpassed our annual fund goal for the year, reaching a new milestone: $91,052! Key to this success was the matching challenge received from Moses Brown alumnus Dean Woodman. This challenge engaged 92 donors, including Friends school educators, school trustees, new heads of schools, Leadership Institute graduates, and Friends school alumnae, among others. Thank you to Dean Woodman for this challenge gift! Overall in 2015-2016, a record number of new donors stepped forward and many former supporters increased their giving or made multiple gifts. Fundraising efforts around the National Endowment for Quaker Children continued to evolve as well and we added a National Advisory Team this year. The NEQC Pilot Program completed its first year with scholarships awarded in four areas of the country including the Southern region, Midwest, West Coast and Maryland/D.C. area. 2016-2017 will be year two of the pilot and we expect the number of students supported will double. New seeds have also been planted fostering collaborative work between Friends schools and Friends school educators. Over 80 Friends school educators gathered for the Friends School edX Summit in October to explore new pathways for Friends schools to collaborate around online learning. In June the dialogue continued at the Online and Blended Learning Symposium for Friends School Educators, cosponsored by Friends Council, Friends Seminary, Friends Academy, Brooklyn Friends School, and Mary McDowell Friends School. The 17th annual White Privilege Conference was held here in Philadelphia April 13-17, 2016 with 2500 participants from all over the world, including a significant number from Quaker Schools. Friends Council was a sponsor, and Associate Director Deborra Sines Pancoe was part of the local planning team. A reported 18 Friends schools participated in the conference. The Institute for Engaging Leadership in Friends Schools, once a seedling, is now a perennial continuously yielding educational leaders. This year the seventh Engaging Leadership cohort is the largest yet and action research projects are well underway. It is an exciting and vibrant time at Friends Council and in the world of Friends education. This year you have done more than sustain our work supporting Friends schools – you have helped us grow, expand and improve. We thank you. Respectfully,

Michelle Holland, Clerk

Drew Smith, Executive Director

National Endowment for Quaker Children To enhance the Quaker character of Friends Schools through increased enrollment of Quaker children. 2015-2016 proved to be a noteworthy year for the National Endowment for Quaker Children (NEQC) and the NEQC Pilot Program. Thanks to the generosity of all who have contributed to our NEQC efforts, we have reached the following milestones: • Friends Council is close to halfway to reaching the fundraising goal for this endowment fund. A matching challenge is currently underway. • The NEQC Pilot Program is fully funded, underway, and growing!

Just the boost we needed!

Friends Council on Education’s annual fund received a tremendous boost this year when Friends school alumnus Dean Woodman (right) stepped forward with a $10,000 matching challenge gift. This gift inspired new and lapsed donors to step forward and give to Friends Council and was instrumental in growing the annual fund to an all time record level! Many thanks to Matt Glendinning, head of Moses Brown (left) for telling Dean Woodman about Friends Council on Education and the work we do supporting 81 Friends Schools across the country. Thank you, Dean, for your generosity and passion for Quaker education.
