2013-2014

September 2014 Dear Friends of Friends Education, This past year was an extraordinary moment in history for Friends Council on Education and Friends schools across the country as we celebrated the 325th anniversary of Friends Schools in America! We are honored by your generosity in supporting our work of sustaining the Quaker nature of Friends schools, lifting up diversity, amplifying the national voice of Friends education, and increasing resources and financial sustainability. Thank you! This year Friends Council served 720 participants though 25 professional development programs for educators, administrators, and trustees in Friends schools. Our peer networks continue to thrive through face-to-face gatherings and online connections through www.friendscouncil.net. We piloted a new program, Exploring Together, co-created with Friends General Conference, to strengthen the relationships of Quaker meetings and Friends schools. Our Leadership Institute and Mindfulness education courses continue to serve Friends educators throughout the country. We are particularly pleased that schools report an energized spirit and renewed Quaker dimension through their participation in the new Membership Renewal Process. Thanks to you, we surpassed both our Friends Council annual fund goal and the annual fund goal for Friends Education Fund. We are deeply moved by the generous support for our new National Endowment for Quaker Children. This scholarship fund was initiated by the Friends Council Board and Heads of Friends Schools, and then moved forward with two incredible challenge gifts. We have full confidence that this fund will strengthen the presence of Friends children in Friends schools across the United States in the near future.

Our work to improve the way in which we welcome all individuals into our school communities included devoting a portion of our April 2014 gathering for Heads of Friends schools with upper school divisions to a discussion of gender and gendered language in Friends schools. At the October Heads gathering, our screening of the new award-winning documentary, American Promise, helped raise issues of race, privilege, and opportunity for African-American boys and their families in our schools. Hilary Beard, author of Promises Kept: Raising Black Boys to Succeed in School and in Life, the companion book to the film American Promise, spoke to heads and was the keynote speaker for our Diversity peer network gathering in January 2014.

INCOME

Friends Council had a significant presence at several key national events this year, including the Council for American Private Education’s Board meetings and the Quaker Leadership Conference at Guilford College. We also hosted a successful service learning peer network in collaboration with the National Network of Schools in Partnership, and we co-hosted a conference with the Friends Association of Higher Education on “Exploring Right Relationships.” This conference, with participants from Friends schools and Friends in higher education, explored in community how to bring the Quaker values of truth seeking, nonviolence, social justice, simplicity, and environmental stewardship more fully into educational organizations and the wider society.

Your wonderful support and generosity this year went above and beyond our goals, and as such, will allow Friends Council on Education to do the important and critical work of fulfilling our mission. Your passion and commitment to Friends education is clear and inspiring.

Sincerely, Darryl J. Ford, Clerk

Irene McHenry, Executive Director

Following our Values Lili Herbert and Tim Sheldon on Planned Giving

“We feel that educating children grounded in Quaker values and experience offers hope for the world. ” Please share a bit about what Friends Council on Education means to you. Lili: I see Friends Council as a lifeline for our school, Friends School of Minnesota (FSM). Being the only Quaker school in Minnesota, we are somewhat isolated…sometimes it can be hard to be on your own. Friends Council on Education has provided us with a connection to that broad and deep network and 325-year track record of Quaker education that is just so helpful to our school. It has supported our school in so many ways, from governance, to programs, to teacher support and training. The connection to a broader network has helped our school survive and thrive. You have been strong and steady supporters of Friends Council in so many ways. What motived you to join the Evergreen Circle? Lili: We really believe in Friends education. There is great need in the world and it can seem overwhelming to think about what we can do with our resources to make a difference. We consciously and deliberately identified Quaker education as the best channel for our resources. We feel that educating children grounded in Quaker values and experience offers hope for the world. Tim: We could distribute our money and resources to a whole lot of different places, but we feel that focusing on institutions and organizations that really follow our values is the way to go. Giving money to Friends Council is a natural outshoot of our commitment to the Friends School of Minnesota; supporting the Council is another way of giving back to the school. Lili: We also know that Friends Council manages and uses resources well, and that matters to us too. Tim: I really see independent schools, and especially Quaker schools, as pioneers in education through the Quaker values and the progressive education that are taught there. I really see contributing to Friends Council as a great way to invest in the future of our children in the world. Lili: We want to be part of Friends School of Minnesota but we also want to be sure Friends education is part of the national landscape forever. You have chosen to include Friends Council on Education in your estate planning. Out of all the planned giving options, why did you choose to include FCE in your will? Lili: We were creating our wills and wanted to have a say in where our resources go, connected to our values. Designating Friends Council in our will is a line on a paper, it’s easy to do, and has no impact on us at this point. We hope there will be something significant to leave the Council. Tim: It’s not just about supporting Friends Council annually, it hopefully will last a really long time. It’s a way to keep giving when you can no longer decide to give. What would you say to other Friends Council supporters who may be considering a planned gift? Tim: Independent Quaker schools, the 82 schools that are operating alone, really need to have a council or an organization that holds them all together. If people believe in Friends Council’s strategic initiatives, if they really want to do the best for Quaker schools across the country, then they need to pay attention to the network that holds them all together. The Friends Council on Education is that organization that is advocating for their goals.

Please consider joining the Evergreen Circle of Friends.

Celebrating 325 Years of Quaker Education

Photo: Irene McHenry, Taia Harlos and the Belly Button Quartet.

On April 24, 2014, at the historic Arch Street Meetinghouse, Friends Council on Education celebrated 325 years of Quaker education in America and honored the 13-year leadership legacy of retiring executive director, Irene McHenry. This landmark historical occasion, entitled Leading in the Light, featured musical performances by Quaker school student groups and Quaker educators, the presentation by Dr. Jill Biden of the first Friends Council Leadership Award for Service to Society to Kwesi and Melissa Koomson, the presentation of a commemorative publication entitled Leading in the Light: Celebrating 325 years of Quaker Education in America, and the announcement of the launch of the National Endowment for Quaker Children. The outpouring of enthusiasm, generosity, and support was remarkable and Friends Council on Education extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved. Here’s to 325 years of Friends education and Irene McHenry!
