Annual Gift Report 2012-2013

Thank you for sustaining the spirit in Quaker education through gifts to Friends Council on Education

Preserving the heritage, Strengthening the core, Inspiring the future

September 2013 Dear Friends of Friends Education, THANK YOU for supporting Friends Council on Education this year through your generosity of giving and service. Each contribution, large and small, is integral to strengthening the lively network of Friends schools across the country and throughout the world. This year, we celebrated ten years of leadership initiatives. Twenty-five teachers graduated from SPARC (Spirited Practice and Renewed Courage), an inspirational, two-year program focusing on renewal of spirit and practice through Quaker processes. Over 120 teachers have taken SPARC learnings back to their schools to nurture Quaker renewal and growth. Fourteen graduates from the Institute for Engaging Leadership in Friends Schools completed their action research projects on behalf of Friends education and joined the ranks of 73 Leadership alums, 11 of whom are now Heads of schools. We launched a vibrant program for board development this year with funding from the Edward E. Ford Foundation matched by a generous donor. Trustee U is a three-year online program for boards and school committees. We had a successful first year with more than 300 participants learning principles of good governance, strategic planning and communication through webinar classes, podcasts and a Trustee U blog, available on www.friendscouncil.org. We embarked on a three-year mindfulness project for Friends elementary schools in which we implemented mindfulness-based stress reduction programs for teachers and students. This innovative project, funded by the Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation and the Tyson Memorial Fund, is research-based and benefits entire school systems. During the annual NAIS conference (National Association of Independent Schools), held this year in Philadelphia, we hosted a breakfast at Friends Center for 75 executive directors of independent school associations from across the country and we had the privilege of welcoming 5,000 educators to that conference highlighting the history and moral foundation of Quaker education. The Friends Council’s mission, simply stated, is to support the renewal, growth and flourishing of Friends education. Your gifts support us in providing consultations, publications, grants, and programs for educators and trustees. We provide student financial aid to Friends schools, tuition aid to Quaker students through Friends Education Fund, grants to schools for special projects based on Quaker testimonies, and grants for consultants to advise on financial planning and fundraising. Friends Education Fund

Living into the Future Harry and Melody Hammond on Planned Giving Harry, you and Melody have been supporters of Friends Council on Education (FCE) for many years. You made a decision in 2008 to leave a bequest to the Council. What motivated you to join the Evergreen Circle at that time? I had been working in and around FCE for years, and giving to the annual fund. We needed to revise our wills when we retired and moved to Kendal, and we discovered that we will likely have something to leave behind once we are gone. Having no children to factor into our decisions, we felt free to designate some of our favorite organizations and causes as beneficiaries. Friends Council was at the top of that list. It was a treat to be able to do that. It’s a way for us to live on into the future, knowing that Friends Council will be doing its powerful work, making evident in its efforts and in the efforts of Friends schools the values that Melody and I treasure.

J. Harry & Melody Hammond

Was it difficult or complicated to make this decision? It was easy to make a planned gift, because Friends Council on Education has proven itself to be reliably vital over time. I see FCE as essential. By nurturing vision, leadership, and opportunities for gathered reflection on practice, the Council keeps Friends education moving forward, and it helps individual schools weather the storms they inevitably encounter. I think of Friends Council as the spinal cord of Friends education. It gathers educators, provides platforms for communication, sparks creative sharing of wisdom, distributes information and methodology, and helps the schools bring their values to life in their communities, their programs, and their operations. Melody and I have seen, too, that experiencing a Quaker school as a student or parent or employee leads some to join a Friends meeting, which is what we did. Throughout my career, the Council’s programs were my refueling stations. I took inspiration and support from the workshops taught by David Mallery. And I remember feeling, after one of Holly Locke’s annual visits to the school, less alone in using inquiry-based teaching. In recent decades, I have seen the Council’s work increase these sorts of connections among schools and educators. FCE now helps school leaders explore headship through the Leadership Institute program, deepens commitment to careers in its SPARC program, and encourages collaboration of all sorts through its publications and peer networks. Melody, your teaching career was not in Quaker schools, but in the public system. How did you feel about naming Friends Council in your will? For me, it feels like giving to family. I was a special education teacher in the public system, but our Friends school community is close to my heart, and I hope that what we leave behind can serve all Friends schools in a trickle-down, pay-it-forward kind of way. Some of the graduates of Quaker schools do take what they learn and become teachers and therapists and social workers, giving back to the public sector.

Please consider joining Harry and Melody as a member of the Evergreen Circle of Friends. Planned gifts can be made through bequests, trusts, securities transfers, retirement plans, and life insurance assets. To discuss giving options, contact Friends Council, 215-241-7245.
