SOCIETY OF CHAIRS · 2018 GALA
Cheers to the Chairs! I am so excited to play a role in bringing back a beloved tradition and celebration of giving in our community. The outpouring of support, interest and curiosity when Frontdoors Media made the Society of Chairs event announcement reassured our committee that our partners and our team were going to be a part of something very special. Thank you to Linda Herold for starting the tradition and for agreeing to let us honor you this evening. Event chairs have a special place in my heart. My first “real job” after college was assistant to the Heart Ball chairmen for two years. I learned very quickly that the volunteer responsibilities involved with this chairmanship were massive and that the success and determination of these women meant significant funds were being raised to fight heart disease and stroke. Fast-forward to 2003 when I was asked to serve as a co-chairman of the Man and Woman of the Year luncheon for Valley Leadership with Terri Wogan Calderón. While it is not a gala that raises millions of dollars each year, the protocol and organizational skills I learned from the Heart Ball committee guided me every step of the way. I am so thankful to Deborah Bateman for saying yes to chairing this evening in honor of the 2017-18 chairs and for the many partnerships that made this elegant affair possible. I ask that you consider contacting each of the event production vendors listed in this program when planning your next event. Their hearts are in support of our local philanthropic efforts and I am so thankful for their partnership. Thanks to everyone’s support, we will be able to grant funds from our newly created foundation in memory of our former editor and colleague, Mike Saucier. Finally, a huge thank you to the Frontdoors Media team. I can’t express enough how dedicated they are to be sharing the stories gathered from each and every nonprofit represented here tonight. We are already looking forward to next season and sharing many more stories about the incredible giving in our community. Enjoy your summer and if you are not serving as a chair next season, we hope you will support the chairs you know with the knowledge and wisdom gained during your tenure. With gratitude and love,

SOCIETY OF CHAIRS ¡ 2018 GALA
Dear Friends, Welcome to Society of Chairs! I am thrilled to see this celebration of philanthropy and volunteerism at the highest levels return to our community. It is truly my honor and pleasure to be celebrating your contributions to our community this evening. Tonight’s event is presented in partnership with National Bank of Arizona, the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa and Frontdoors Media. I am thankful to have these new partners in place to continue the legacy of this very special event that was started in 2010 by my dear friend, Linda Herold. Tonight, I would like to thank and honor Linda for having the vision and grace to bring this celebration to life so that we can carry on this wonderful tradition. As many of you know, I am very passionate about serving the needs of the community in which I live and work, and I feel confident in saying that we all share the same passion for helping our neighbors and making Arizona a better place for us all. Thank you for all of the work you do on behalf of your charitable organizations. It has been a labor of love and gratitude to plan this celebration of your efforts! Respectfully,
Deborah Bateman Event Chairwoman, Society of Chairs 2018 Gala

When caring people make it their job to give their time, talent, and heart to help others, it puts “good into action. Thank you to all non-profit organizations, volunteers, and donors who are meeting the needs of others and changing lives in our communities.
SOCIETY OF CHAIRS · 2018 GALA
An Ode to Linda Herold Tonight’s celebration would not be possible without Linda Herold. In 2010, Linda collaborated with the former Ritz-Carlton Hotel at 24th & Camelback to create the Society of Chairs as a way to celebrate and recognize individuals who volunteered their time, talent and treasure to chair the charitable events in our community. Four years later, National Bank of Arizona stepped in as the new presenter of the event with Linda present at each and every one. And now, today, the event is back and it is only fitting that we honor Linda Herold for not only founding the beautiful celebration, but being an ever-present supporter of our community.

Thank you, Linda… you dove in to be the ultimate connector since your arrival in our community. Your coverage as a society reporter for Frontdoors and other publications was always done with class and thoughtfulness of the organizations being supported. You founded three incredible professional organizations to help women build their networks and make new friends. You may be “retired” from these endeavors, but you still continue to connect us all for the greater good and we are all so very appreciative and thankful that you do. We are honored to continue Society of Chairs tonight and always.

opportunities she’s been afforded at the resort.
She’s now spent 15 years at the resort, helping to grow the catering department into what it is today. “I found a home at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa where I developed the catering department from pre-opening days through opening of the resort,” she said. “Through my 15 years at this iconic property, I’ve very much enjoyed the path afforded to me as I’ve grown with the catering department and watched it blossom into the success that it is today.”
“One of the things that is so wonderful about this resort and the team with whom I work is to have the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally,” she said. “We are all empowered to really craft our own adventure, and that is such a special element woven into the fabric of our resort.” She also credits her involvement in the community, which keeps her connected to her clients and their event needs. “I’ve found staying connected within the community has been quite impactful,” she said. “It offers perspective on the overall landscape and allows me to really put myself in my clients’ shoes while also actively being a part of the area’s evolution and growth.”
During her time on the property, she’s held multiple positions including director of the catering department to a member of the business travel sales team, ultimately returning to where her heart is — catering.
However, what’s most rewarding to Mackesy is her ability to collaborate with the client and her team at Westin Kierland to deliver the perfect event.
“I have always enjoyed working in the food and beverage industry,” she said. “Fortunately, Scottsdale has a thriving tourism interest ripe with a multitude of culinary offerings, innovations, influences and more.” Mackesy attributes her growth from traditional food and beverage to a more expansive role in catering to

“It’s so imperative to build that trust with the client and to ensure they know you to intimately understand their vision and goals,” she said. “Like any relationship, we must give great care to our relationships with our clients as a means of supporting them so they — and as a result, their event — may thrive.”

SOCIETY OF CHAIRS · 2018 GALA
The Sauce Foundation When Andrea and Tom Evans acquired Frontdoors Media early in 2017, they started kicking around the general concept of having a signature event that would benefit a foundation they would establish as the charitable arm of Frontdoors. They really had no idea what that might look like, and what the foundation might benefit. It was just kind of hanging out there, a thing on their to-do lists, waiting for them to get to it eventually as they did everything else they do on a day-to-day basis. Then, tragedy struck. Their beloved friend Mike Saucier, the first editor of Frontdoors under their ownership, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Mike fought a brief battle against the disease, but he passed away on November 1, 2017. His family and friends were heartbroken — still are — and miss him every day. We cannot overstate what Mike meant to us personally, but also his incredible impact on what Frontdoors has become. Mike was instrumental in the new vision for the publication and dedicated to its theme of celebrating giving in all its forms. It is with a nod to Mike Saucier's memory that Frontdoors Media is bringing back the Society of Chairs Gala. Proceeds from tonight's event will benefit The Sauce Foundation. It will fund pancreatic cancer research as well as scholarships in Mike’s honor for students at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. Andrea and Tom have dedicated Frontdoors and all it does to Mike in perpetuity. Now, they hope to take it a step further, by both fighting the terrible disease that took his life and creating an entire generation of Mike Sauciers — kind, thoughtful storytellers with a love of community, friends and family. Mike may be gone, but through The Sauce Foundation and with the support of our community, we all have an opportunity to ensure his impact in the future will be extraordinary. And we’ll get to celebrate that impact and his memory at the Society of Chairs Gala, this year and every year moving forward. Thank you for your support of our efforts.
