VALLEY LEADERSHIP · MAN & WOMAN OF THE YEAR
WELCOME Congratulations, Neil Giuliano and Sharon Harper! I’m honored to host my first Valley Leadership Man & Woman of the Year luncheon with two shining examples of leadership and community impact. I know you will all leave today inspired by their commitment to improving our communities. Our theme for this storied event is simple, yet pivotal: transformation, together, starts today. Through Neil and Sharon’s leadership journeys we’ll learn about why we need to come together now to solve our state's most pressing issues and how we can accomplish more by working together. We are at an exciting time for the Valley and Arizona. Phoenix is now the 5th largest city in the country and Arizona continues to be a dynamic place economically, politically and culturally. As a native who grew up in Tempe, I’ve seen the many changes over the years: ASU, Tempe Beach Park (now Town Lake), downtown Phoenix’s growth, suburbs to exurbs, 202s, 303s and much more. The Valley continues to grow and with that growth comes challenges. What has inspired me so much over the last six months is that the Valley Leadership network is ready, willing and able to help solve these challenges. Our network is our greatest asset — we have such a diversity of skill sets, social and political capital, and the can-do attitude that lives on from our founders. We can accomplish much and impact many. But first, we need a plan. Our dedicated board and I have been working to develop a strategic plan that empowers, leverages and mobilizes our network and partnerships to have deep impact in our communities. We’ve refined the Valley Leadership mission (what we do), vision (what we want to see for Arizona) and values (who we are) statements. These statements are incredibly important as they form the basis for all we do (or don’t do). We’ll be strategic, collaborative and, most importantly, intentional about the ways we can make a difference. I hope you can commit today to being part of the transformation. This is just the beginning. Valley Leadership cannot do it alone — we’ll all need to work together to move forward, learn from history, stand up for what’s right, lead others to do the same, and prioritize and commit to what we want for the Valley, and for Arizona.
Thank you,
Dave Brown |5|

The spirit of Valley Leadership was and always will be about having impact on our community. As the Valley’s premier leadership organization, Valley Leadership mobilizes, leverages and empowers leaders to address the most pressing issues Arizona faces. The organization’s can-do attitude dates back 40 years, to when a group of Valley visionaries recognized the need to identify and cultivate the next generation of local leaders. They imagined an annual succession of changemakers dedicated to the best possible future for Arizona.
Nearly four decades later, that vision has produced some 3,000 alumni and an organization with a proven track record of success. Today, Valley Leadership continues to make deep impact by challenging conventional thinking, highlighting diverse perspectives, and fostering opportunities to improve our community’s future. Valley Leadership continually looks to its rich history, as well, to inspire and move the organization toward Arizona’s next big thing. That historical awareness compels reacting to the pivotal moment Arizona is in so that Valley Leadership maintains its momentum to remain

relevant and thrive. As the Valley has grown and demographics have changed, the needs of the area have evolved. Phoenix requires an elevated level of sophistication to address the broad set of challenges it now faces. So Valley Leadership is becoming more intentional about utilizing its impressive alumni network, as well as other stakeholders and partners, to grapple with issues shaping our community today, and in the future.
vision and innovation as well as the almost immeasurable impact exceptionally dedicated individuals are able to make. Neil Giuliano and Sharon Harper epitomize what Valley Leadership envisions for its alumni and for itself. Both have committed themselves to service in their community and to a better future for the people of this state.
To celebrate those who most embody the spirit of all that Valley Leadership wants to accomplish in service to the community, the group’s Man & Woman of the Year luncheon honors a pair of outstanding citizens for their long-term commitment and contribution to Arizona. One of the most prestigious awards given in the Valley, it speaks to the recipients’ vision and innovation as well as the almost immeasurable impact exceptionally dedicated individuals are able to make. Great change happens best when leaders have a deep understanding of their community — what drives, sustains and advances it. Where does it want to go, and what must be done to get there? That’s why Valley Leadership’s new CEO, Dave Brown, has spent the better part of a year listening to what the community needs and preparing Valley Leadership for its next evolution.
But what if we all pledge to share this commitment in the belief that transformation together starts today? Valley Leadership challenges every person attending this luncheon to step up and identify what needs solving and what they are able and willing to do. It will be hard — all leadership is — but by working collaboratively, we can improve Arizona.
Through this transformation, Valley Leadership remains committed to continuing its legacy by providing the skills and connections for civicminded citizens to advance their passions and pursuits while serving Arizona.
Valley Leadership is taking the lead in gathering thoughtful people to solve the most pressing issues in the state. Through its thought leadership, partnerships, alumni and people like Neil Giuliano and Sharon Harper, Valley Leadership is mobilizing a strong alliance of leaders working to build a stronger Arizona.
To celebrate those who most embody the spirit of all that Valley Leadership wants to accomplish in service to the community, the group’s Man & Woman of the Year luncheon honors a pair of outstanding citizens for their long-term commitment and contribution to Arizona. The future is bright, but we can’t get there alone. To make lasting, meaningful, positive change, we must work together. So Valley Leadership encourages you to join in the journey as we continue to cultivate and coordinate the agents of change who will continue to move our community forward.
