An Introduction to Fly Fishing with Barry and Cathy Beck May 13 - 15, 2016 The Lodge at Raven Creek If you are interested in getting started in fly fishing or are looking to improve your skills in a relaxed and friendly environment, then this is the workshop for you. Join Barry and Cathy Beck in Benton, PA for a weekend of fly fishing instruction, new friends, superior accommodations and farm-to-table meals. Plus, you’ll have the chance to swap travel stories with fellow anglers from Frontiers. The weekend workshop will cover fly fishing fundamentals including fly and gear selection, casting, insect identification and on-water strategy. You will then apply your newly acquired skills at Barry and Cathy’s home waters, Fishing Creek. This lovely freestone stream offers some incredible fly fishing opportunities and boasts a healthy population of big fish. You will be surprised by the number, size and condition of the fish. Local guides will also be available to provide individualized instruction while you’re on the water.

Weekend Itinerary Friday, May 13 Arrive before 6 pm and check-in to The Lodge at Raven Creek in Benton, PA. Conveniently located only five miles from Ricketts Glen State Park and 20 miles from Bloomsburg, the lodge is situated on the rolling hills of Raven Creek. Guests will enjoy all the charms of a traditional bed and breakfast with the amenities of a well-appointed fishing lodge including free wireless internet. Rooms are newly furnished, can accommodate double occupancy and two rooms share a bathroom. The lodge also features spacious gathering spaces including a living room, dining area and extensive wrap-around porch. In the early evening, around 6 pm, you will join Barry and Cathy Beck and your Frontiers hosts on the porch for a weekend kick-off toast. Mingle and swap stories with your fellow classmates while enjoying wine, seasonal drafts and food. After the welcome reception, the evening will be spent at your leisure. Relax at the lodge and soak in the country surroundings or drive into the town of Benton.

Saturday, May 14 Enjoy a farm-inspired breakfast prepared at the lodge before you begin the morning instruction. Barry and Cathy Beck will demonstrate the theory and practice of fly casting, review equipment, knot tying, trout habitat, insect hatches and fly selection. Personalized pizzas prepared from the lodge’s outdoor oven will be served for lunch on the porch. After lunch, the class will head down to the pond where your newly acquired techniques will be put into action with the opportunity to catch some fish. Following the end of the first day’s instruction, attendees will enjoy a celebratory cocktail reception and multi-course farm-to-table dinner prepared by The Blind Pig.

Sunday, May 15 Following breakfast at the lodge, attendees will have the opportunity to put the fundamentals they learned in the classroom into practice at Barry and Cathy’s home waters, Fishing Creek. Barry and Cathy Beck, along with two additional guides, will provide streamside instruction and personalized guided fishing in the morning. Expect to take lots of pictures of the fish you will catch! A streamside lunch prepared by The Lodge at Raven Creek. After lunch, the fly fishing weekend will conclude. Departure times are contingent on attendee’s requested time. The guides will be available for anyone interested in additional personalized instruction and fishing.

Airline Information Scranton International Airport is the nearest airport to Benton, PA. It is recommended that attendees flying into Scranton plan to depart on Monday, May 16. Additional accommodations and transfers can be arranged by Frontiers.

Gear Gear needs will be discussed prior to departing. Attendees are welcome to bring their own rods and reels; however, loaner gear will be available if needed. You are highly encouraged to bring / wear waterproof shoes. Waders and wading boots are available in most sizes. Additional gear information will be included in your pre-trip packet.
