Editor’s Notes This issue was very creative; we decided to go with hard core entertainment content. We really are trying to turn the city of Toronto onto the rest of the world and showcase the talent that we have. The cover was put together and designed towards, a group known as I.M.G (International Money Getters. They‘re a group that needs to be taken seriously, with 5 members that all deliver on point when it comes to lyrical content. This cover story is a must read. The model is a beautiful female that we thought would best fit this issue. She goes by the name of Sweetness, who is an up and coming model who has done photo shoots around Toronto for Caribana band mass. She is ready to take it to the next level so remember where you seen her first and don’t forget to check out her behind the scene photo shoot with us; on our YouTube channel www.youtube.com/frontpagelive . Sense aka NewKid Tell us a little about yourself and what you’re about and what you represent? Born in Edmonton came out to Toronto, lived pretty much everywhere from the west end to the east end. I do this Hip hop music thing I do my R&B also trying to get into my entrepreneurship; photography, videography, promotions. The game right now is” the more you can do is the better you are”. Where did you get the idea for the name “A Women’s Worth”? The name concept actually came from my mom.
people would stop and ask “hey what is that what’s going on” and that showed me that there is something in that. For the most part it was just me even that night I had to run the door, had to take photography, do video and had to host. I had to pretty much do everything but those are just the begin stages when you’re starting something, know body wants to invest into something they haven’t seen be successful. At the begin your just going to have to grind and prove that you can be successful and then people start investing their time and money.
It was a strong title. It had a lot of people buzzing in the city and a lot of females wanting to jump on and never got a chance to go on, how did you choose the competitors for the competition? That was basically a first come first serve basis, cause I was working for a while trying to get females together on twitter and Facebook going from here to there just trying to make everyone aware. I realized after this event people will know and people will pay attention. The next time I have an event I will be able to be more selective of who I choose. The title is important like you said; the title was really a major part of what made it so attractive to everybody. What type of people did So did you see any strong talent that night at you work with and who the showcase? did you work with when It was very entertaining, I can’t even think of you were coming up one person where I was like “can this person get with that concept? off the stage”. There was none of that, everyone Honestly, I was lucky to was entertaining in their own right, they had have my women whose their own style, their own swag. Of course my worth I recognize and girl Kizzy, I have to big that girl up because she appreciate a lot. She was doesn’t spit like a girl. She spit like she raw able to help me out with a “you know what I mean”, she goes hard and few things such as flyer spits real. She talking about a young man design and coming up coming up and getting his rep in the streets, with some new interesting marketing ways to going to jail and those are some real topics. To market the promotions for example we printed hear a female talking about it, to hear it come out cardboard posters and I would hook these posters to my neck and go outside with tickets and so people are seeing the poster. A lot of FRONTPAGEMANAGEMENT.COM | SEPTEMBER 2012 7
from a female’s perspective is something completely new and different. I think it’s something that our community needs in general, especially as black people. Not to isolate but she’s a black woman speaking about black issues and I thought that was very powerful. Just behind you is the Palisades building. There are paintings all over the walls that show female strength, female character, female power, which shows that they are the ones that could keep our community together. Vanessa Vane is “my home girl man” that girl is wild she showed up in a limo, with like 25 people. When people do that type of stuff you know you are guaranteed to come back to my shows cause you’re pulling people. She’s just an amazing person. Personality wise she just an amazingly humble person, on stage she’s mind blowing; like just natural. She got on stage and as soon as she got up there she controlled the crowd. Another person who was really impressive was LuLu Blanc, I was like “DAMN” I didn’t expect it, I was very impressed… very impressed, those would be my top three picks. As for how were choosing the winner, were working with the studio and their opinions and stuff like that. The studio is really feeling probably about the same ones. They might even bring in all three. It was just an opportunity to have the women and help them build from where ever there were at and that’s what I wanted to do and that’s what we got done. Is this something that you would want to do annually? It defiantly has the potential to become something gigantic and anybody who is interested in getting involved I’m interested in working with. I want to do it in a bigger venue; it just has to be in the right way “you know what I mean”. The planning has to be done right, the business has to be proper and everybody has to be satisfied with the set-up, before it goes forward. I mean it is something that I want to do
ENTERTAINMENT annually but, it’s almost something that I want to do quarterly. People are telling me that “you know it might be a little too much, it might get played out”. I don’t want to play it out but, I feel like the women need a lot more, so I am going to be doing a lot more shows for women. Definitely you need more sponsors or promoters. As an entertainment manger myself, I know that there is a lot of talent out there and this is a showcase that I’m interested in. “A lot of people even after the fact where shouting you out”. People are actually interested in attending something like that; it’s just that they were unaware of what exactly it was. Now that they have an idea of what it is, they will be more enthusiastic to come out and show their support for Toronto’s female artist. Sense: That’s blissful man I appreciate you showing me love. For example we could work together and we can get started on doing that, like I would want to get started on doing something like that a.s.a.p. “you know what I mean” just planning and stuff. So tell me about the mix tape for the “A Women’s Worth”? Oh yeah, the girls haven’t even been notified yet. I was actually… if you look at my phone, I was right in the middle of making a message for them. Letting them know that I am going to be putting together a mix tape for the women’s worth event. So I really want them to get on this and I want to have about 25 tracks, to get hard copied and printed out and distributed around the city. What are the names of the mix tapes you have on datpiff.com? “My Revelation”, I have a mix tape on their called “Before my Revelations” another called “The Lord of Kings” basically all you have to do is go on datpiff and type in Sense aka New Kid and you’ll find me and Sense as in common sense not change. Yeah, those mix tapes are there I am always promoting those I am on twitter. FPM

Funkmaster Flex Hip hop is made up of many different avenues and one of the main roads is the Dj’s. This Dj has the ability to bring a song to life with the order in which it’s played or playing, with the type of music that will turn up the energy in a club, during a radio show or just a regular work day. That is some power to be in control of somewhat like a super hero. This may be a little excessive but they truly have the ability to make or break a day. Right now we are going to pay homage to one of the most talented dj’s in the world and we solute FunkMaster Flex. Funkmaster Flex started at the young age of 19 when he got his first job as a record boy, for a local radio station dj from the Bronx by the name of Chuck Chill Out. One day Chuck was running late and behold a star was born when Funkmaster Flex filled in for him. Flex was well known around the area as the dj who was live in the club and this got him notarization. To the point where he began broadcast live from clubs on Saturdays for Hot 97 and this segment was called “Saturday Night House Party”. Being able to control a party landed him his own show on Hot 97 in 1992, which was the only radio show to show case only hip hop at the time. Recognition
followed him wherever he went and he caught the eye of Loud Records who signed him to create a series of mix tapes called “60 minutes of funk mix tapes”. Over the years he has been able to combine his love for cars with music by interlacing the two with various television shows such as “Ride with Flex” which was aired on Spike Cable Network. Ride with Flex was a show that was basically like MTV Cribs but with cars. It gave celebrities the chance to show case their vehicles to the public. He continues to be a main part of hip hop with his style of hosting and energy. When any one hears the name Funkmaster Flex they know that he is one of the greats... I have never heard anyone say “who is that’’. It would just be crazy talk if you are an artist in the music industry, do your research and obtain that knowledge. FPM -

my fam Deazel; it’s just like an on-going thing that we need to do. The process that we need to do, just the hungry for it” feel me”. How long have you been rapping? Like I said I been rapping since 07 or writing since 07 “you know what I mean” it’s been that long Have you done any performances ? Tell us a little about yourself? “Winky Write”, I’m from Jane and Weston Road, that is where we at right now. I’m an artist. I started recording in 07. 07 I started writing me and my fams Deazel. It started from there but the recording started a while later you know what I mean. We realized we had a raw talent so we started messing with it more so yeah basically that where it came from. How does being a part of IMG make you feel, especially when people are shouting you out or giving you shout outs? Makes me feel great, like I always wanted that glow that shine that, lime light “you know what I mean”. Since I was a kid, seeing that life on TV you know. Like I said me and
Few show’s, local events and showcases to get my talent out there. But other than that I haven’t really been on the big stage yet you know. It’s what we working on right now So how do you choose your songs when you be performing live? Basically just picking which ones that I think fit the crowd. So it’s my opinion. I ask people their opinion and that helps. Within the next 5 years with the IMG movement? Something like “No Limit” back in the day or “Cash Money” you know what I mean something big that what we working with.
FRONTPAGEMANAGEMENT.COM | SEPTEMBER 2012 18
What’s your favorite part of performing when you out there? Oh man having the crowd hype off your music and there singing your stuff “you know what I mean”. Either the hook or the verse that’s just a rush Anyone you want to do a track with or done any hit tracks with? Did a track the other day with CFlowz shout out to C-Flowz representing Eglinton West. But yeah that going to be a banger it’s coming out just now called “Overtime”, motivating these boys to get up off the coach and start working for theirs Which direction do you see the rap game heading into when it comes to Toronto Rappers? I should say it’s getting there, cause it’s like the doors are open already “ Drizzy Drake opened the doors for all of us, so the whole world is looking at Toronto at this point so I’m saying like everybody does needs to grind “you know what I mean” and we just need to put out good music so I think it’s a really good look for Toronto music right now.
When are you looking to drop next mix tape or is it in the works right now? It’s in the works right now I should say Fall or Ending of October but It’s in the works. I don’t have official dates right now. Anything else you want to add anything you want to let the public know what’s going on with you whatever? Just watch out man, like I’m just a hungry artist right now like I am new to this too but like trust me like this IMG thing you better recognize these three words from now cause you going to be hearing them a lot. For your closing thoughts is there anything you want to tell the public? Yeah, just hit up the YouTube page IMGworldTV and watch all our videos that’s basically it just watch out for IMG cause it’s going to be a big thing https://twitter.com/winkywrite http://www.youtube.com/IMGworldTV

Trap Yeah you know I did a couple of events back in the days “Go hard or Go home” you know traps you can look it up trap star performing at Knock Turner . We did a show couple months ago at Lambadina with IMG Ritchie Stacks, check that out that’s on YouTube IMGWorldTv. We keep it moving .
Tell us a little about the IMG movement? You already know its a takeover man” IMG” you know we keep it moving, we like 6 people deep we got Deazel upstairs in the booth making tracks got Wink about to release his track I’m about to release my mix tape “you know what I mean”. With that being said free Ritchie Stacks, free JDK other than that we just keep things moving making hits after hits, just trying to keep this movemen,t the mission going you know just staying on top. What direction are you trying to bring the whole IMG thing in? Well for me I mean like right now I am working on my third mix tape so like I’m trying to take a different approach I mean different approach especially with what’s been going on right now “you know what I mean” so I got like tracks that are positive tracks but at the same time I got those hustling tracks cause I know what it is to be on the grind and all that so that’s what it is right now. I’m on this third project, it’s more growth compared to “Something for the Street Volume 2” which is on datpiff you can check that out and when volume three comes out you can see the difference but other than that it’s just “real talk” you know that street life but at the same time it’s just a little deeper than what everyone else is giving out in my option, so that’s what it is So have you had any type of performances or shows you did in the past?
Who have you featured on any of your tracks? Yeah I got a couple of features I got one coming out on the upcoming mix tape with my boy who just came home from the penn did eight years so that’s one of my favorite features right now I also got a couple of features with Wink and Baad Ass Bukk “Don’t like “remix so yeah I got a couple features “ you know what it is” I got actually one with Ritchie Stack, that one is coming out on the upcoming mix tape the IMG mix tape “World Domination” so just look out for that So the name trap how did that come about? Well basically we came up off the grind my boy’s would call me up saying where you at Jigga let’s go partying “I’m like naw B” we going trap it out and the name just stuck. With the whole IMG movement where you all see yourself in the next five years? On top I mean at the same time we just said we got too much talent on the team we got Wink we got Deazel we got Bukk “you know I mean” we got Grove. I think the only thing that’s going to stop us from being on the top is just us so at the same time everyone just has to play their part and know their position and keep things moving cause at the same time I mean Ritchie Stacks already set the tempo and said yo this is what it is . So it’s like we all just on that

same mission everyone just has to do their part so that’s what it is So what do you think about hip hop as a whole coming out of Toronto? I think right now it’s a good look , I think like the talent that I’m seeing out there compared to where it was a couple of years ago has me every day looking at different websites just seeing who’s doing what . At the same time you know you get motivation off certain things that other rappers is doing but at the same time I try to keep original to what I’m doing . I like to see what other people are doing I’m a fan of the whole music thing that’s where it started off from the love so at the same time I don’t mind looking at other people’s things. You just mentioned that you be listening to other artist, trying to get a feel for the direction they heading in so you know how to come with your shit so like who you listening to right now? A lot of old school from like 1996 like Jay Z I’m throw out there Pimp C RIP Pimp C of UGK as a whole who else damn Cash Money back in the days we grew up on all that type of music PAC so all of that like even now and again I listen to that but Meek Mills right now is what most of us we bump, Jeezy for sure Jeezy always comes with that real talk and that hustler music so other than that there one two few hits here and there. Chief Keef “I don’t like” track you know if we are going to do a remix on that then obviously that’s a track that hits us up so I mean for a whole week Bbm’s where going off that with that “ I Don’t Like” so I mean all those tracks right there I like listening to different music to get motivation southern music east coast music whatever if you listen to my first mix tape or my second mix tape should I say a lot of people said I sound like a southern rapper but you got to switch it up now and then. You mentioned that you performed at a couple of shows you did one with the president of IMG Zeeks like how do you choose your songs you perform? It’s just a matter of what feels right, I remember one time I heard an artist say “yo you have to be able to envision it and see it”. So everything I do I try to
envision how people will react how I would react if I was in the crowd so that’s what it is for me. I just think about that mind state and say yo what’s going to get the people to move and each song that you make you try to get a reaction. You got a couple of mix tapes what the name of those mix tapes so if anyone wants to look those up they can get at them? I’m going to throw out volume 2 out there you know what I mean cause I think volume 2 plays a critical part in understanding volume 3 it’s on datpiff “Something for the Streetz”
How long does it take you to create an album? It depends I mean if stuff works out as planned it can work out anywhere from five months to even a year it depends on the project the quality of work you want to do “you know what I mean”. Cause certain things you don’t want to rush cause for instance my next mix tape it shows like different periods of time so that’s the quality I love about that mix tape, it didn’t come as a rush project. But if it’s just like little features those come like every month we can drop something. A project doesn’t take long to make it depends on the quality of a project. How do you feel about the quality of music you been putting out compared to what you been working on now? I think it’s hard to say cause volume 2 in its self it is what it is at that time you know I mean nothing has changed but at the time I felt no one was making hustler music so I felt that at that time that’s what I had to deliver. That’s what I appreciate about volume 2 but at the same time I felt like when you listen to the whole mix tape there was no real direction then grinding hustling ,nothing wrong with that but when you grow up listening to artist like PAC and different man that you know it n gives you a different understanding, makes you want to say let me try a different thing. So especially with what’s been going on right now with all the chaos and what not like everything happens for a reason but at the same time we have to look at the bigger picture see what I’m saying so that’s how I’m looking at it https://twitter.com/imgtrap http://www.youtube.com/IMGworldTV trapstar416@gmail.com

BAAD ASS BUKK Tell us a little about Badd Ass Bukk the person? I was raised in Jane and Finch all of my life, growing up I was used to a single parent house hold. My father raised me due to the fact that my mother was incarcerated and on drugs, which led me to the streets. I lost the majority of my friends to street violence and jail time. My best friend was killed when I was 18 and my exboyfriend is now doing life, because of these facts I’m really trying make use of my life. I’m a college girl now, I’m not used to it but I need to create a future for myself because I realize I deserve a better lifestyle… I’m a very intelligent woman who has a lot of knowledge from the streets to the books it’s all me, even up till this day my mother is still incarcerated but I love her to death and nothing can change that. The struggle is all the same but it never killed me it only built me and I’m strong so nothing can break me. How is being the first female in I.M.G? I feel honoured that I’m the only female in I.M.G and that they put the trust in me and believing in me to be hot enough to be on their level What do you bring to I.M.G? I feel that I bring that hard core rap to the group from a female prospective
getting shows with mainstream artists and dropping my mixtape Do you have a title for your mixtape that’s going to come out? For now the title remains anonymous (lol) How would you describe your rapping style? I would say that I’m street with that versatile / heart cry, overall I’m a hard body rapper that can switch it up momentarily Where do you see yourself and IMG in the next 5 years? I see us at the top son (lol). I see all of us making it; we came from the bottom so we can only go to the top plus the way how we are working now… it’s crazy that’s all you need to know. “We deserve it we took to many L’s now it’s time for that W Let’s back track for a minute < when did u star rapping? I started rapping when I was 13 years old and before that I was a poet and a writer. I remember when I use to hook a mic up to a computer and rap all day and night What does your name stand for? Badd Ass stands for “believing and achieving dreams” and “a struggler’s success” What’s your favourite part about performing? My favourite part is being in control and making everyone listen to what I have to say in other words “open your ears and listen to what I have to say”
https://twitter.com/BaadassBukk http://www.youtube.com/IMGworldTV/
Being a female rapper in a male group do you feel that u have to go to the extreme? I don’t feel that I have to go to the extreme because there is no competition out there for me but I go hard like I do for myself and my team. Which projects are you currently working on? I’m currently working on some new tracks that should be dropping this fall, umm working on FRONTPAGEMANAGEMENT.COM | SEPTEMBER 2012 23

The Annual African Heritage Pageant known as Miss AfriCanada Pageant was founded by Wofa Yaw Nyarko in 1999 through the African Heritage Organization called AFRIHILI. Every year, contestants from all corners of Africa compete, grow and become empowered on their journey towards earning the prestigious crown and title. Through the years Wofa Yaw has strived and succeeded in making sure that one young lady is crowned as the Miss AfriCanada Queen yearly, and is given the opportunity to travel to any country in Africa for philanthropist work. Many Queens have travelled and made a difference in countries like Zimbabwe, Kenya, Congo and Ghana. Recently in 2011, Maya Mboup (Miss AfriCanada 2010) travelled to Kenya where she launched a mentoring program associated with her non- profit organization Initiative A Plus at the Nyumbani Orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Miss AfriCanada team now consists of 5 inspiring and hardworking individuals who voluntarily donate their time to make sure that this pageant continues to grow and stay strong. Miss AfriCanada Pageant’s Excutive Directors are Ayesatta Conteh-King, Fidelia Famiyeh, Jamal Seaton and Zainab Godwin (also Miss AfriCanada 2007) and founder Wofa Yaw. Although a very humble team, they often refer to themselves as the dream team as they continue to push this pageant to a new level year after year. A future goal for this team is to one day see Miss AfriCanada Pageant as not only one of the top pageants in Canada, but one of the top pageants in the world.

Peer Pressure Peer pressure comes in many forms; either the intention behind it is to change your attitude, values or behavior in order for you to conform. No one should ever be pre pressured to do anything, and the individuals who are responsible for peer pressure should have insight into their actions, but we all know that is not the reality of it. The reality of Peer pressure is that it can lead to depression and anxiety attacks which could then have a teen’s life spiral out of control to the point of no return. We have all either peer pressured someone or we have been a victim of it at some time, at the time we may not of thought of it as peer pressure but take a look back and re-enact the scene in your head. This is going to always be a problem in school for teenagers cause everyone wants to fit in so the mind state behind this is to teach an individual how to react to the pressures of fitting with a crowd or doing something against their will. Individuals who prey on the weak in this case are sometimes going through their own problem which could be insecurity, family problems etc…parents need to ask their children about school and get involved into the lives and build a healthy relationship so that if this is happening to your child will be aware of it immediately. In most cases when it is brought to the attention of a teacher or a parent it already has been going on for a period of time. Teens that going through this react different but the outcome is always the same, low selfesteem, dropping out of school or in more severe cases death by suicide.
There are many ways to detect if a teen is being peered pressured and some of those signs may be a drastic change in character, behaviour, grades may drop and the teen may become distant. Often peer pressure can lead to a teen giving in just for the sake of thinking that if they don’t resist they will overcome the situation at hand. Even though this may work for the moment it only opens the door for the victim to be victimized repeatedly. A victim of peer pressure should not be afraid to stand up for themselves. You might lose friends or be neglected by peers but at least you will have your own mind and be a leader to yourself. You have to stand up for yourself and this is the only way to overcome a person with tendencies to break others down to their level. If you are a victim of peer pressure don’t be afraid to talk to a parent or a teacher because they might be able to help you either stand up for yourself or further assist you by any means necessary. As a tween your confidence should be built up not destroyed, so learn to live a pro social lifestyle from early on in life so that you can be a positive person that someone looks up to and that u can help. Never put yourself down always say to yourself that you are the best at whatever it is that you do. Sooner or later people will take notice to the type of person that you are and they will realize that you may be able to help them feel better about themselves. As a guardian or staff who notices such behaviour Never turn your back on some who needs help. If they seek they need it… you might be there only chance. FPM -

YOUTH DAY 2012 a place to shine and be themselves as they embarked on creating a future for their craft.
Youth Day is a non- profit operated free event, going on its 6th year taking place at Yonge- Dundas Sq with a closure from Queen St to Dundas St. Youth Day was an answer to the summer of the gun back in 2005. Founder Tylaine Duggan wanted to get the youth of today engaged to do other things; which is the corner stone of Youth Day’s message “Pick up a brush or pen instead of a gun when you’re mad” spoken by Tylaine. This year’s event is boosting over 100 performances stretching across all genres of music and art form, a fashion show, art gallery show case our youths work. This year marked the turning of the guards in a way from mother to daughter, as Tyaline stepped aside only assisting her daughter Penny Nicholls who is the event Executive Producer and former Youth Day board member. All in all Penny was quite happy with this year’s turn out, despite the rain spectators showed there support though out the ten hour day. It was an event that gave youth
At 6:00 p.m. a moment of silence for all the life’s that have been lost in the streets of Toronto the moment was led by Ms. Duggan. While on stage a group of volunteers along with a group of officers gave speeches followed by a touching poem, ending with a call to stop the violence in our streets. This year’s headliner was H20 artist JD ERA, who took the stage by storm with his high energy style of performing.

HEALTH
ypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure, sometimes called arterial hypertension, is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries becomes elevated; requiring the heart to work harder than normal to circulate blood through the blood vessels. Systolic blood pressure (the top number) is the pressure in the artery when the heart contracts and diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) is the pressure in the artery when the heart relaxes between beats. If one where to check their blood pressure throughout the day , they would get different readings as it is forever changing depending on situations that we are in. High blood pressure can be broken in to two main categories which account for over 90 percent of the diagnoses, primary hypertension (The main form of high blood pressure) or secondary hypertension (caused by another medical condition or treatment). There are several other types that can arise due to complications of primary high blood pressure, understanding the difference is a key
element to being able to monitor the condition. White coat Hypertension is a common form of high pressure only occurring during visit to the doctor. Those having white coat hypertension have normal blood pressure when they are home, but have regularly elevated readings at the doctor’s office. Although this can be the usual reaction to the stress of the visit, it can also be sign of an underlying problem. It is best to have this monitored by your doctor. Pseudohypertension although uncommon increases in risk as we get older, it is when a person with normal blood pressure appears to have high blood pressure. Meaning that the readings will be alarmingly high, any attempts to treat the “high” blood pressure will actually cause the blood pressure to drop too low; leading to dizziness, confusion, and fainting. Malignant Hypertension a rare but serious form of high blood pressure, defined as severe hypertension occurring with internal bleeding of the retinas in both eyes and swelling of optic nerves behind

the retinas. Unlike the other profile of high blood pressure this version puts younger patients at a higher risk than older patients. Pulmonary Hypertension its uniqueness lays in the fact that it affects only a specific part of the circulatory system. Making it extremely dangerous because the portion of the circulatory system it affects is connected to the heart and lungs – preventing the lungs from transferring oxygen and the hearts ability to pump blood. Resistant Hypertension is when after all three- drug combination therapy has failed and the blood pressure continues to be elevated (unresponsive to treatment). Renovascular Hypertension is when the arteries that bring blood to the kidneys become clogged; the constriction can increase blood pressure throughout the body. We have all gotten our reading done during a visit to the doctors, where we are told that everything looks good. We seldom stop and ask what those reading are? What do they mean for me? How many of us can truly say they understand what and how the readings work? Normal blood pressure is when the blood pressure is lower than 120/80 mm Hg
High Blood pressure is when the blood pressure is 140/90 mm Hg or above most of the time Pre-Hypertension is when the blood pressure is 120/80 or higher, but below 140/90 (having these reading you are at a higher risk in developing high blood pressure) It’s truly alarming to know that with the wealth of information our government has put into educating the public about the importance of a healthier life style, that over the course of the last 15 years we are just getting worse. Especially amongst Canadian youth and ethnic groups, we are on a break of a national crisis. High blood pressure is now found to affect the black community more than any other community, becoming one of the silent killers to our ethnic background due to the fact that many people are unaware that they have it. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada more than 250,000 young Canadians in their 20s and 30s have high blood pressure. Although not alarming for them in retrospect they had predicted this would happen 10 years before; “We predicted that obesity was going to have a profound physiological effect on the health of our children. Fast forward 10 years, and we're now seeing 20 and 30 year olds that have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, multiple risk factors for heart disease." – Marco Di Buono, director of research, Heart and Stoke Foundation of Canada. Many people are not aware of the symptoms coining hypertension, or maybe it’s not that we are unaware but that we

just do not think we can fall victims. Whatever the case to our logic is we’re by far wrong in the approach taken to ensure a longer life span. Causes of Hypertension can be stress related, sickness, constant headaches, blurry vision, dizziness or nausea even the foods we eat can also be symptom triggers. Not everyone shows these signs although they can lead to stoke or heart disease, which in turn causes severe damage to the organs and eyes. Prevention steps should be in the minds of many especially those in the African Canadian community, where many reports findings that we are generically prone to inherit this disease from our parents as they did from theirs. Alarming as the finding of these studies are it’s not all depended on or genes but on a variety of factors; from social and economic status, community, life style choices and regular checkups from our doctors. It’s always an added bonus when we can avoid stressors in our lives, we can choose to eat healthy foods that are rich in potassium and magnesium as they can lower blood pressure, eating garlic cloves daily is also effective in lowering blood pressure. Many use garlic as a remedy to lower blood pressure of those that are already diagnose and have a reading that is extremely elevated. While red meat such as beef, pork, and lamb can be a culprit in hypertension; eating foods that are high in fat and sodium and consuming more than a few alcoholic beverages daily can also raise blood pressure. Smokers can decrease their risk by quitting smoking, by doing so
blood vessels will not harden restricting the flow of blood through the arteries. A vegetarian diet can prove to be quite the opposite. Spices like turmeric, cayenne pepper and ginger can also work miracles, let’s not leave out herbal teas as must haves on your grocery bill. By eating a balanced diet low in saturated fat, regular exercise, reducing stress and lots of fruits and vegetables can help win the fight. Recapping everything high blood pressure is a major risk factor is it’s the leading cause of heart disease. At the same time it can lead to a stoke, from an artery blocking or rupturing within the brain. There is only so much pressure we can place on our hearts, the more fatty plaque build-up on our artery walls causing the heart to beat harder and increases the pressure of blood leaving the heart. All in all when everything is said and done, its each of us that need to make that subconscious choice in our own health. Educating one’s self with knowledge of the health issues affecting your family is key, while incorporating a health active life style are also ways to better plan for a future without hypertension. FPM COMMON SENSE Career Choices top for a moment and think.....where do u want to be within the next five years? This question is relevant whether you are a high school student or an owner of a fortune 500 company. The reason being is that routine and structure help mould us. Many don't realize that it all begins with a positive state of mind. Determination and motivation follow after you have made up your mind to follow through with your decision It’s easy for us to say what we want but how many of us actually strive for it? Talk is cheap and it also discredits you as a person when you go back on your word not only to others but also to yourself. If you are in school please consider talking to a guidance councillor or someone who has your best interest at hand for advice also look into more than one option for postsecondary schooling. When picking your classes, choose the ones that are going to benefit you and your career choice also factor in the time it will take to complete the classes for your desired profession. This procedure might discourage you, but you always need to know what you are getting yourself into beforehand. There are many options when figuring out payment for post-secondary schooling and being Canadian has its benefits with our O.S.A.P (Ontario Student Assistance Program). This is a program that allows you to pay for schooling through government assistance if you qualify. The repayment of your loan is based on your
grades and the completion of the course or courses. O.s.a.p is a good method of payment but some prefer not to be in debt to the government after they are finished school. School is costly but in the end it pays off for that career of your choice that will allow you to obtain that annual income and live comfortably working in the field of your choice. Many of you might already have that dream career and with that being said congratulations. But for those who are working to get by or who are just comfortable, think about venturing into a field that is more suitable for you. The average Canadian retires at age 65 and is being compensated half of what they would earn in a month. It’s sad to say but many Canadians can’t even afford to retire due to bills and have to keep on working pass the age of 65. If this is not the life for you then get focused and get into gear to find yourself in real world. There is no reason why someone who is good with computers should be working with their hands and vice versa. Find out what makes you happy and if you can make money doing it try your best to obtain more knowledge or achieve a certificate, degree or diploma. Many people get stuck in a job simply because they are afraid of change, when in fact the only way you’re going to know what you are good at is, is if you take that chance. People who are courageous and take that leap very rarely look back. FPM -

In The Beginning… Have you ever wondered why your relationship is not what you expect? There are various kinds of relationships; those formed with loved ones such as spouses, friends etc. The type of relationships this article will focus on is that of our spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend etc. The first relationship we form is with our parents. The standard of which a relationship entails is portrayed by our parents. Whether we come from a nuclear family (2 parent household) or a single-parent household the relationships we form with our “significant others” are a reflection of our parents’. With that being said, many of us may agree or disagree. Sometimes we may look at our parent’s relationship as an example of what NOT to get into and some may look at it as exactly what they want. We are able to distinguish right from wrong through our values and beliefs—as well as what’s considered respectful from disrespectful. Our parents are responsible for our upbringing and are the core teachers of our belief/value system. Therefore, it is also the parent’s responsibility to lead by example and instill a good understanding of what a healthy relationship is and should practice what they preach. It’s ideal to have a “perfect family” but there is no such thing. Some of us have healthy relationships and others may not be as fortunate but I guarantee that if we all put our problems in a pile, everyone would take theirs back! “The grass is always greener on the other side”. It is up to you as an individual to change your state of mind from victim to victor. Don’t be a victim of your own circumstances. Learn from each hardship and progress as a person towards prosperity. Every relationship you’ve ever been in has been influenced by your parents’—whether it is directly or indirectly. The father has always been the one to set the standard of how a daughter should be treated by a man by how he treats the mother and to a son how he should treat women. That being said, when a husband/ boyfriend disrespects his wife/girlfriend in front of their kids, they have already painted a picture of how women should be treated. The consequence; the child will later become immune to this kind of treatment and lose respect for their parents. “What we hate in others is what we hate in ourselves”

ELIJAH McCOY “THE REAL McCOY” lijah McCoy was born in Colchester, Ontario, Canada on May 2, 1844/ 1843. Elijah’s parents were escaped slaves, George and Mildred McCoy from Kentucky who escaped to Canada through the Underground Railroad. George McCoy was awarded 160 acres of land for his service in the British forces It was his fascination with machines and tools that lead his parents to send him to Edinburgh, Scotland at the age of 15, for an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering; he was certified a few years later achieving the title of “master mechanic and engineer”. After completing his apprenticeship he re-joined his family in Michigan, where they moved to in 1847. During the 1860s professional work for an African- American were not typically granted, not even to those that acquired the expertise. McCoy settled for a job as a locomotive fireman and oiler for the Michigan Central Railroad. His main responsibility as a fireman on the trains was to fuel the stream engine and the oiler lubricated the engine’s moving parts as well as the train’s axles and bearings. It was during this time he was able to use his training and talents to create a revelatory invention that would change the way trains ran for years to come. During this period, steam power was rapidly harnessed as a prime industrial power source; many of the problems involved moving parts requiring lubrication. Trains needed to periodically stop to be lubricated to prevent overheating during their trips. His invention of the “Improvement in Lubricators for steam- engines” allowed machines to be lubricated while they were still
in operation, by using steam pressure to pump oil wherever it was needed. Patent (U.S. Patent 129,843). July 23, 1872 He continued to make improvements to his design by inventing several more improvements (U.S. patent #130,305 - Improvement in lubricators for steam engines - issued on 8/6/1872.)
The Michigan Central Railroad promoted him the title of instructor in the use of his new inventions, later becoming an instructor to the railroad industry on patent matters. Railroad and shipping lines started using McCoys lubricators, often asking for it my name as anything else was deem inferior “Is this the real McCoy?” It was his invention that literally revolutionized the railroad industry and other continuously running machinery. For a man with over 57 patents to his name with a strong contribution to the railroad industry McCoy never got the recognition that he deserved. It was not until he opened up his own company in 1920, the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company where he started manufacturing his oil dip cup and other inventions. He also had contributions to the development of Ironing Tables. U.S. patent #150,876 - Improvement in ironing tables - issued on 5/12/1874. FPM -T.A.A
